3 out of 5 stars Angel's Halloween bash.......2007-03-28

OK, so the plot isn't the most original in the world, a kind of "The Amityville Horror" by way of Freddy Krueger-ish wise cracking demon monsters. "Night of the Demons" is about a bunch of likeable (but to the slasher standard unremarkable) stereotypical kids who decide to have a party in an old funeral home. After dancing and drinking for awhile they think it would be fun to have a séance and accidentally unleash the spirits that have lain dormant in the house for so long.

I will be the first to admit there a few logic problems with this movie, the biggest question was how did the monsters become bound to that house in the first place? They aren't ghosts, which would sort of make sense because it's a funeral home, but demons. How did the kids find out about the place? And dose anyone notice that nymphomaniac Suzanne (Linnea Quigley) is quiet a bit older than the other kids (though she's pretty hot in her costume). The acting is pretty atrocious, but what do you expect? The only stand out is Quigley, who was the 1980s reigning scream queen, and shows us things she can do with a tube of lipstick that are pretty wild. Even she is not very convincing.

OK, so far I have been pretty hard on the movie, but there is plenty good about it too. As I said before the kids, while not original, are pretty likable, especially Angela; well, at first anyway. It's the film's sense of humor that's it's redeeming quality. At that time horror movies were taking themselves pretty seriously (despite what you may think), and the script felt pretty light on it's feet. I first saw this movie when I was pretty young, and it scared me to death back then. It is much cornier now, but some of the disturbing images stayed with me for a long time. The gore was pretty impressive too, and that was the selling point to me for this movie. The editing was lean and sharp, and the set design was impressive considering how little money they had to work with.

Pretty good for a Halloween party movie, just don't invite the girl with the lipstick.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie.......2007-03-26

I remember watching this film in the late 80's for the first time on VHS and now again on DVD. I've always been a fan of horror films and say
this is a good 80's horror film watch it.

4 out of 5 stars Linnea Quigley, Demonized!..........2007-03-07

Ah, the 80s! Funny clothes and even funnier haircuts. Still, there is a certain charm about it now. Take NIGHT OF THE DEMONS for instance. It starts out slow and fairly lame, then BOOM! Linnea Quigley (Return Of The Living Dead, Graduation Day) gets possessed and it's party time! Yes, I'm a Linnea loon! She has a way of turning just about any movie into a must see classic! You've all seen or heard about the infamous "Lipstick Disappear-o" scene and Ms. Q's tendency to shed her clothes like nobody's business (praise the Lord). However, she is also great in her demonic persona. She is pretty creepy and menacing for a SoCal gal! Check out her face when she says, "Stop looking at me!" Yikes! I highly recommend NOTD to all LQ fanatics...

5 out of 5 stars Essential for the Horror Fanatic.......2007-02-19

As a child this movie scared that crap out of me. As an adult I found the story and the horrible acting very entertaining. The special effects are great for their time and there are some genuine "boo!" moments that make you jump. Definitely a fun movie to watch and an essential part of a decent horror movie collection.

4 out of 5 stars Horror Review.......2007-02-08

Overall, this is one of those late 80s horror films with cheap actors and low-budget settings. But, the script did not need high-paying actresses like Julia Roberts or Susan Sarandon in order to be successful. The film is trictly about the average horny teenagers who are looking for a cheap scare for the Halloween night at an abandoned parlor home. It was the sight of a gruesome massacre, according to the story. Apparently, the house is POSSESSED and the spirits living inside of it are considered demons. So, here comes the spirited crowd of partiers with a willingness to raise some hell. And, of course, you can predict the storyline as of what happens. The only thing that I can say is useful out of these B-horror films, just as I commented on "Puppet Master" and "Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives", is that these movies provided some hintful ideas for women who might be having some sexual difficulties regarding getting their mates "in the mood" as frequently as they are. If you women are experiencing that problem or would like to spice it up, then pull out your debit card and order some horror flicks mentioned. Some of the best ideas have been pulled out from these films, not Playboy pornography. One peculiar scene is where two lovers are getting it on in a coffin. Out of all the women I have personally dated, maybe only one or two would be possibly open-minded enough to elaborate in some different settings for sexuality. Key word: POSSIBLY!
So, take a glance at some of these horror films. You might catch an idea. But, in reality with all due respect to the fellas, I don't think the majority of us will get very lucky. As my father always said, "Only in the movies!"

After establishing his signature style with such moody classics as Cat People and I Walked with a Zombie, Jacques Tourneur returned to peak form with the first-rate supernatural thriller Curse of the Demon. It's a horror-noir set in England, adapted from the M.R. James story "Casting the Runes" and built around the ominous notion that black arts--particularly the use of ancient runic symbols--can summon a deadly beast from hell. Dana Andrews is the stubborn American skeptic, determined to debunk a genteel occultist (Niall MacGinnis) whose evil powers are ultimately incontestable. The briefly seen demon may be cheesy by latter-day standards, but its nightmarish appearance--and Tourneur's masterful use of subtle suggestion, threatening atmosphere, and eerie special effects--make Curse of the Demon one of the best horror films of the 1950s. This splendid DVD offers the longer British version Night of the Demon for film-buff comparison; it's essentially the same film with a few extended scenes. Both are highly recommended. --Jeff Shannon

What a great evening of chills! It was just as scary & creepy as I remember from watching this movie with my family during my childhood. Holds up well even after all these years. I highly recommend to anyone who loves scary movies.

4 out of 5 stars It's In The Trees! It's Coming!.......2007-01-21

Filmed in England, this 1958 film was originally released with a running time of 95 minutes under the title NIGHT OF THE DEMON; when it reached the United States it had a running time of 83 minutes and the title CURSE OF THE DEMON. Both versions are contained on this DVD, with the English version the better for those twelve minutes, but in truth there is little significant difference between the two, and if you are a conniseur of 1950s horror films you will find both equally fascinating.

Based on the short story "Casting the Runes" by M.R. James, DEMON offers the tale of American psychologist John Holden (Dana Andrews) who travels to a conference in England, planning to debunk a devil worshipping cult led by Karswell (Niall MacGinnis.) Unfortunately for the professionally skeptical Holden, Karswell's powers are genuine: he has successfully translated an ancient text and, through runes written on parchment, casts a curse first against Holden's collegue and then against Holden himself.

DEMON was directed by Jacques Tourneur, who worked with producer Val Lewton to create a series of memorable and distinctly noir-ish horror films at RKO in the 1940s: CAT PEOPLE, I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE, and THE LEOPARD MAN. All three films created a sense of unease and scream-aloud fear by implication and suggestion, and although DEMON is much more explicit in its effects, Tourneur brings the same sensibility to bear on DEMON, endowing it with remarkable authority and power in spite of several distinct flaws.

Chief among these flaws is the script, which can best be described as somewhat abrupt in terms of dialogue, and leading man Dana Andrews, whose performance is remarkably unsubtle even in a decade noted for a lack of cinematic restraint. Film lore also has it that Tourneur lobbied against showing the demon on screen, and given the fact that the visual is hardly inspired this clearly would have been the better choice. None the less, DEMON has jolts and jars aplenty, not the least of which is Karswell: Niall MacGinnis' performance, with its mixture of the commonplace and the flatly evil, is remarkably fine. The film also sports a host of memorable set pieces: the storm, the flying parchment, Dr. Holden's exploration of Karswell's mansion, Dr. Holden's run through the night forrest, and the final train sequence, to name but a few.

Although it is not well known today, like Tourneur's films with Lewton, DEMON has cast a very long shadow in terms of influence, and it is very difficult to imagine such films as ROSEMARY'S BABY and THE CHANGELING without both this film and those that proceeded it. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Gave me nightmares for years..........2007-01-05

I saw the American version on late night TV when I was about 7 or 8-late 1960's and the cheezy monster is still in my subconscious! I love the cast and for the genre, this is is easily one of the top 5 or 10 films of that era. Any student of horror films will have to include this in their library.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Horror Tale Still Chills.......2007-01-05

This atypical fifties horror film is more concerned with suspense and character development than the eponymous creature; but when the hoary beast does appear you'll agree it's one of the better screen monsters. Jacques Tourneur was already the recognized master of restraint in the horror genre by the time he directed this British production in 1957. His earlier collaborations with producer Val Lewton generated a series of minor masterpieces, including "Cat People" and "I Walked With A Zombie." Not content to direct a standard episodic thriller, Tourneur's films are imbued with a certain intelligence and respect for the audience. "Night of the Demon" is no exception. Charles Bennett's and Hal E. Chester's thoughtprovoking and thoroughly frightening screenplay forms the framework on which Tourneur hangs several remarkably well directed sequences. And, his work with actors Dana Andrews and Peggy Cummins yields fine, workmanlike performances; however, he gleans brilliant work from Niall MacGinnis and Athene Seyler in supporting roles that are richly drawn and invested with real humor. This is not to say they are comic relief, these characters are indeed tragic and evil. Nearly everything about "Night of the Demon" is perfect. The production is first rate and its artistic merits are undeniable; from Ted Sciafe's black and white cinematography to Ken Adams production design, the care with which this tale is wrought is evident. Based on M.R. James' story "Casting the Runes," the film deals with an investigation into the witchcraft related death of a colleague by an American psychologist (Andrews). Aided by the dead man's niece (Cummins), the doctor must determine whether the power of a local magician (MacGinnis) to conjure up "demons" is truth or fiction; and if that power was used for murder. "Night of the Demon" has all the elements of a great mystery, with just the right mix of the supernatural. It is among the best horror films, and remains a literate and scary film. ***** (5 out of 5 stars)

5 out of 5 stars This house isn't haunted . . . IT's POSSESSED ! ! ! ! .......2006-05-22

Okay, we all know the first movie is perfect in every detail. This one seems obsessed with redeeming the failures of the second film. (The nun lives?!!! Aaargh!!!!!) My only complaint about this little "romp" is that they couldn't use the original Hull House location. But as usual, Amelia Kincade is the sexiest creature alive. The story is really pretty cool and since this came out in the dark abyss of the age of crappy horror movies, Scream- era garbage, I want to puke every time I hear anyone complain about this installment. The demons are just different enough to breathe 'fresh?' air into an old favorite without losing the intent of the original film. The characters once again are all hateable, which of course makes you anticipate them dying and converting to likable non-human entities!!!! Hee- hee. This is why I don't understand the amount of survivors in part 2. The original is so dark and evil, nothing can recapture it, but this is very good at reminding you of the ancient one and also making fun of the trends of today. I won't give away any surprises but I'll say the Angela's character takes on a deeper role as "Satans Favorite Sex Toy" she uses her ability to appear human to manipulate these idiots into selling their souls and let's just say that everyone gets whatever it is that they dare wish for ! ! ! There is a great scene where Angela uses her "gifts" to disarm a frustrated gun-toting teen that is absolutly NOT TO BE MISSED ! ! ! Maybe I like these movies way too much but who cares, I just wish that these things happened to obnoxious people in real life so I wouldn't have to live vicariously through repeated viewings of Night of the Demons Parts 1 and 3. ( A couple of scenes from part 2.) Sorry no pathetic attempts at a "who's the killer" suspense crap-o-rama with way too much dialogue just the good ol' 3 staples of horror Blood, nudity and best of all Violence ! ! ! Though I do miss the great score of the 1st, this movie proves that as long you have Amelia Kincade and the 3 above mentioned elements the rest will work itself out ! BUY THIS MOVIE ! ! ! !! ! ! !
BUY IT ! BUY IT! BUY IT! BUY IT ! BUY IT ! BUY IT ! BUY IT ! !! !! ! !! THE FINAL SCORE - DEMONS 3 & HUMANS 0 ! DON'T FORGET ! ! ! !

3 out of 5 stars Third Time Around Not As Charming..........2005-11-14

NIGHT OF THE DEMONS was a very entertaining little shocker. The sequel to it lacked some punch, and seemed more geared towards sex than anything to do with demons. The third film, NIGHT OF THE DEMONS 3, lacks the power of the first film and the slight mix of humor, sex, and scares of the second film. While by no means a failure, NIGHT OF THE DEMONS 3 isn't as strong a flick, so you're going to be left disappointed but at the same time entertained. The same theme occurs here as a group of teens ends up in a house they should have never gone to in the first place, and after a shoot out at a convenience store, they hide out in this house and they're not only being pursued by law enforcement, but they're also being pursued by demons. The hijinks in this movie aren't as scary, and you're more apt to laugh than shriek. This movie definitely has some good moments in it, and Amelia Kinkade is still charming as Angela (she was better in the first and second). The ending was cheesy too, so you're more likely to shrug your shoulders after watching this very cheesy but still mildly entertaining movie.

3 out of 5 stars The info on this release.......2005-08-30

Some of you may wonder what's up with this release of Night of The Demons 3. Well this release is the Canadian release of the film. Since this is a Canadian made film and would be more popular there it was released in Canada but, was never released in the United States. Don't get me wrong this is by no means a bootleg. It is an official release of the film. It is unfortunatly bare bones. The film normally goes anywhere from 10-15 dollars. Other movies that were released in canada but not in the U.S. are: Prom Night 2 & the collector's Edition of Ginger Snaps.

3 out of 5 stars a mysterious release of Night of the Demons 3.......2005-07-19

so, where exactly did this release come from and go to since the release of Night of the Demons 1? Well, I risked it and ordered a copy from amazon marketplace since it's no longer available from Amazon, fearing I'd be getting some sort of bootleg or the PAL version. But it is indeed an NTSC version put out by a company called Seville. Of course you're getting the barebones here. It's full screen. It's mono. But it does have a standard plastic CD case and very clean artwork, a menu, and English or French language options. The film itself doesn't look so bad. It doesn't look as if it were transfered from a video cassette, it's actually slightly cleaner than that. It does have a sort of "digital" feel to it, as if it were perhaps cleaned up with a computer program so it wouldn't look like a bad transfer. But overall, if all you've got is an original VHS tape, you're taking a slight step up with this release. Let's hope 2&3 come out in tighter versions somewhere down the road.

i was very disapointed in this set,i know that at cheep price you are going to lose quality, i have bought and reviewed a number of these multi-pack movies ,but these transfers were just the worst i have ever seen. 8 of the movies were unwatchable and when returned they gave me new set and same problem with same movie. even store couldn't get them to play sowatch and look else were for these films.

5 out of 5 stars The listed price is wrong........2006-03-31

I bought this DVD for eight dollars at a Best Buy in Chicago. That's the set retail price as far as I'm concerned. Forty dollars is definitely worth it for all the good movies on here, but any DVD retailer would likely sell it for under ten.
