Amazon.com essential video
Cast Away is a good movie that wants to be much better. While director Robert Zemeckis's earlier film Contact achieved a kind of mainstream spiritual significance, Cast Away falls just short of that goal. That may explain why the film's most emotionally powerful scene involves the loss of an inanimate object, even as it presents a heart-rending dilemma in its very human final act.
It's three movies in one, beginning when punctuality-obsessed Federal Express systems engineer Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks) departs on Christmas Eve to escort an ill-fated flight of FedEx packages. Following a mid-Pacific plane crash, movie number two chronicles Chuck's four-year survival on a remote island, totally alone save for a Wilson volleyball (aptly named "Wilson") that becomes Chuck's closest "friend." Movie number three leads up to Chuck's rescue and an awkward encounter with his ex-girlfriend Kelly (Helen Hunt, in a thankless role), for whom Chuck has seemingly risen from the grave.
It's fascinating to witness Chuck's emerging survival skills, and Hanks's remarkable physical transformation is matched by his finely tuned performance. With slow, rhythmic camera moves and brilliant use of sound, Zemeckis wisely avoids the postcard prettiness of The Black Stallion and The Blue Lagoon to emphasize the harshness of Chuck's ascetic solitude, and this stylistic restraint allows Cast Away to resonate more than one might expect. Even the final scene--which feels like a crowd-pleasing compromise--offers hope without shoving it down our throats. You may not feel the emotional rush that you're meant to feel, but Cast Away remains a respectable effort. --Jeff Shannon

FASCINATING FILM! ASBORBING FROM BEGINNING TO END!.......2007-07-06
I had not watched this movie since it was released to DVD some years ago,so I decided to watch it again in my home theater. I must say I did not remember this film being this good! It is truely an amazing film that has the viewer running through a gambit of emotions. This movie runs close to 2 1/2 hours, but it moves along quicky. The DVD transfer and extras for the 2 disc set are excellent and worth owning.
16 year old Expert Review.......2007-07-01
This Reviewer found the movie to be One of the saddest movies he has ever watched. Tom Hanks one of the greats has Done his fair share saving private ryan, forest gump,... This one Has to be his best one yet. If you are a big fan of drama, and survival movies then I highly recommend it.
If you don't want girlfriend to see you crying at the ending don't watch it.
Take Nothing for Granted!.......2007-06-19
If you're a fan of Tom Hanks, than this movie is a must-see! A story of a man who loses everything important to him in his life, because on one fateful plane trip he is left stranded on a remote desert island...for FOUR YEARS!
Much of the movie early on provides foreshadowing for events to arise later. There is the love story intertwined within Hanks struggle to survive (albeit they are a married couple). However, like the rest of the film, even that doesn't turn out the way you'd expect!
My only gripe about the film is, I wish they would have shown a bit more of Hanks' on the island. He was there for FOUR years and the way it was filmed, it jumps from the beginning of his new life, to shortly before he is finally saved. I would have liked to have seen a bit more of the time in between. I can understand however because it was a lengthy movie as is and that would have only made it longer.
Check this out if you can. After seeing this movie, it'll definetly make you appreciate things a bit more and maybe help you not take so much of your life for granted.
At the edge of the world, his journey begins........2007-06-12
6 years after the masterpiece that was Forrest Gump, Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks reunite to bring another masterpiece to the big screen.
Hanks plays Chuck Noland, a FedEx deliverer who after a plane crash, fines himself both lost and alone on a tropical island. With either no or very little hope of getting home, Chunk must learn how to survive on his own, including doing his own dental work yuck and somewhat having someone to talk to in the form of Wilson, a vollyball.
The film is 143 minutes long and about 80 minutes of it are just spent with Hanks on the island. Helen Hunt was good as Hanks's girlfriend it's just too bad she wasn't on screen long enough but she gave a good performance none the less. But this film belongs to Hanks, who earned his fifth Oscar nomination with his very superb performance and I can't wait for what Hanks and Zemeckis come up with next.
An off-beat, thoughtful, and ultimately sad film.......2007-06-02
Tom Hanks has to carry this film pretty much on his own and he does an admirable job. A FedEx employee used to an insanely, fast-paced life, he has to adjust to the danger and abject isolation of life alone on a desert island when his plane goes down in bad weather (an excellent sequence). Meanwhile his family have given him up for dead and moved on with their lives.
"Cast Away" turns many of the romantic notions - of being stranded on a desert island and then being rescued and reunited with his family - on their head.
It is ultimately a sad film that offers no easy resolution.
The film-makers should be commended for making such an off-beat and thoughtful film.

These people wouldn't know a bad movie..........2007-06-19
I don't know if we're even talking about the same movie here -- this is definitely NOT the worst zombie movie ever made. A big problem on Amazon reviews is that reviewers just say a product is "good" or "bad," but give no actual description. So instead of doing that, I'll just describe a few things about it, then let you decide if it sounds good or not.
Is it boring? In order for something to be boring, I would say it needs to have pretty much nothing happen for a very, very long period of time. Thats not so in this film; there are several scenes of zombie attacks, a plethora of zombie shootings, and quite a few zombie bitings (all the makings of a good zombie movie). Also, there is some pointless (and culturally offensive) nudity. As far as the acting -- not great, but at least they show emotion (even if it is too much), which is better than a lot of the lifeless acting in most Euro-sleaze.
Is it a blatant rip-off of "Dawn of the Dead?" Yes and no; the costumes are clearly designed to look like the SWAT team blue uniforms in Dawn, and they even "borrowed" some of the Goblin soundtrack from Dawn (hey, at least they "borrowed good music). Other than that, its very different -- the group is constantly moving, not trapped in a single space, the cause of the zombies is explicitly stated to be intentional and man-made, and it is not a "zombie holocaust" like Dawn -- for almost the entirety of the movie, the zombies are confined to New Guinea, and several cut-away scenes reveal that the rest of the world is still operating normally (although panicy).
Is the story oscar-worthy? No, but then again, if you're considering buying a movie called "Hell of the Living Dead," you probably know what kind of story to expect. The plot is very simple -- nuclear plant-look-alikes are being used to create some sort of super secret project, which has accidentally (or was it?) been released into the Native population of New Guinea. A crack para-military unit is sent to the site of original infection for reasons explained in the film.
Are the special effects bad? For a 1980 Italian movie, no. In fact, there are several quite good head-shots. Of course, there are several scenes where the actors are clearly holding raw meat on the victim and chewing on that, and many of the zombies are simply painted blue -- then again, so are practically all the zombies in Dawn.
The worst part of the movie is the director's annoying habit of splicing in stock footage of wildlife, footage which is clearly of lower quality and not blended into the film well at all.
So, is this a terrible movie? No, certainly not. In my mind, terrible movies are movies that are technically inept or that have incomprehensible plots, like "Oasis of the Zombies" and "Children of the Living Dead." Other than that, its just a matter of opinion. If you like sleazy Italian horror, especially Italian zombie movies, you should find this entertaining. If you're looking for a well-crafted Romero-esque film with biting and deep social commentary, this isn't your film.
your all doomed to be eaten up!.......2006-11-20
perhaps one of cheesiest and most bizzare zombie films ever made, hell of the living dead is a very enjoyable undead gorefest. the story involves a team of swat commandos encountering zombies in the jungle of some foreign country. obviously inspired by dawn of the dead, hell of the living dead is a perfect example of the 70's and 80's cannibal and zombie craze. if it wasnt for the bloody gore effects and comical cheesiness of the film, it would be nearly unwatchable. the horrible overacting, riddiculouse dialouge and mind numbing use of stock footage are what keep this film from reaching 4 stars. overall hell of the living dead is an enjoyable, blood soaked zombie atrocity. only for hardcore zombie and euro sleaze fans, everyone else may want to avoid this one.
Love the movie, but...........2006-07-26
The big problem I have with this movie isn't the storyline. I love the storyline, it is a very Faustian, very grim, storyline about the desire to end world overpopulation by...well...as the chemicals show...creating zombies across the 1st and 2nd world countries. And things work out pretty darn well...no more overpopulation, everyone's a zombie, and everyone has a meal... the living... a great story, and while the actors and special effects aren't anything to write home about, I think the movie does a great job bringing the story from beginning to end. The big problem I have with the movie is the transfer of the movie onto DVD. Now, yes this is a fairly old movie, and it seems that the DVD company that's selling it isn't around (at least I couldn't find it on the net). Still, one would hope for this price we would see the transfer far clearer than when the movie was viewed on vhs. I really wish the film was cleaned up enough so that I can see what's going on. Still, if you like zombie movies, this is a great one, I give the movie itself thumbs up...you'll just be straining your eyes to see what's going on!
Three stars for the zombies and gore, and cheese........2006-07-06
This delivers on the zombies and gore despite the craptastic story. Still fun.
When the guy lifts the rat, and it crawls into his cheap mask, the blood begins to spurt and you know you've entered the 'cheese zone', thanks to some horrendously acting (funny in a bad way) and strange story of project HOPE, which is really a sick plan of genocide that goes 'zombie' wrong.
Hell of the Living Dead is a classic cheeseball zombie film, with plenty of zombies (over 100), zombie gore (cheap fx but bloody), worms (real maggots), atmosphere (jungle, town, abandoned mansion, factory all of which contain zombies). Worth at least one watch, this is one for the zombie classic record books; on the bottom of the pile of course.
i love this cheesey gore flick, but it is stupid!!.......2006-06-06
i love this movie ,so it pains me to give it two stars but really other than the gore and bad acting, this is one of the worst!!! only for gore fans(like me),other wise stay away!!!

The usual slasher-movie teens charter a boat to attend a rave in Washington's San Juan islands, find zombies there, and splatter their guts all over the place. House of the Dead shows early promise when the boat captain is the dude from Das Boot (Jürgen Prochnow) and the mate is the inimitably weird Clint Howard. Alas, things devolve from there. The movie includes frequent flashes from its video game inspiration, not that we need much reminding of the obvious source. Amongst the rotten dialogue, bad acting, and gratuitous topless scenes, there's one looooong shootout sequence in the middle of the picture that should be the main attraction for fans of this kind of thing. Otherwise, it's at the level of every other slasher movie, video game or no video game, in which stupid people do stupid things to keep themselves in harm's way. --Robert Horton

It's that bad.......2007-05-22
Can't anyone make a good zombie movie outside of the 'Dead' movies? Even some of them are pretty lame. Aside from over endulgence in gore let's talk acting here. Now I know that in these types of movie acting shouldn't matter, but here it is plain bad. Stilted actors and lame dialog.
I usually like a Dead movie, been a fan ever since as a boy it took me 7 tries before I finally made it all the way through the origianl 'Night of the LIving Dead' (which in my opinion is the best of any). But this one was bad.
No sense of logic, the heroes extracate themselves from a 'hopeless' situation near the end oh so easily, and don't get me started on the ending fight sequence. I did like the way she popped the leader's head like a pimple however. Thought that was fun.
Just another in a long line of poorly done movies that should be reserved for Sat afternoon on the SciFi Channel.
LOL.......2007-04-17
I think they should implement a new rating system on amazon for movies. In this system it would implement two scores. one score: viewing while sober, and the other viewing while drunk.
now the one star rating i gave this movie as you see above, is obviously the not drunk rating. what you get here is one of the most nonsensical shoddy sloppy ridiculous movies of all time. uwe boll sucks at directing, i dont care how mad he gets or how many people he challenges to a boxing match (notice he weeds out the challengers so he only faces unexperienced fighters). i cant stand these quick cut fast moving hey we are in a music video like sequences that holywood is putting in movies nowadays. and this movie is choke full of those. not to mention horrid acting, horrid dialogue, and a story line that just plain says suck!!!!
now, if you watch this movie drunk (i do not condone the abuse of alcohol in any way) (unfortunatly i think watching this movie sober might actually be more dangerous to your health that alcohol is) then i shall give this movie 5 stars. seriously. gather a bunch of your friends, grab a 6 pack of beer or what ever you drink, and watch away. seriously, i believe this movie would be the greatest episode of mystery science theater 3000 EVER... absolutly wild and zany fun is to be had of this...
ps: this trick only works with this movie. all other uwe boll movies have been made to suck in all ways, drunk or sober....alone in the dark....cries...
I'm the most generous..........2006-12-06
I'll start by saying that I do agree with most of the reviewers here, the movie was really bad. One of the stars I gave is for the good looking cast, unfortunately they can't act at all. Only at the beginning of the movie there are a few moments that makes you jump reason why I gave another star (2 in total), but after that, the movie gets ridiculous, no action, no good video effects (they ran out of $$ I bet) bad acting gets even more stupid, the fighting is horrendous, and the scenes of the game included in the movie don't help at all, instead they make it worst. At the end I was laughing so much, not because it's a good funny movie, but because I could not believe I was watching such an idiotic movie that I spent $8.00 to own. That been said, the only reason to watch it, is to laugh while you discover all the fails and lacks in directing, acting, editing, etc
Wow!.......2006-11-27
Zombie film - lots of slow-moving dead people. Annoying heroes. Only semi-annoying (because very good-looking and under-dressed) heroines.
Zombies, kill zombies! Wow!
somehow..........2006-11-25
you must understand, there is no good reason to like this film other than mindless entertainment value. There are so many plot holes and just all around weak points that it's not even worth mentioning.
Then, in the action scenes they insist on putting a "matrix spin" with the camera around anyone who fires a shot... after every shot! I'd say that if it wasn't for that it would have been helluva lot more entertaining, that just made it a lot worse and in my opinion, the images and action were the only reason anyone would ever watch this.
if you are looking for something to pass the time with some friends, somehting to make a fwe drinking games out of, then go for it. it's fun, nothing more.

Great film that has it all!!.......2007-05-13
This film has it all and i mean it all. Porn, gore, horror, what more do you want for entertainment. Great film.
sleazy zombie cheesefest.......2007-02-08
joe damatos erotic nights of the living dead is another one of those italian trashy exploitation zombie flicks that while quite enjoyable is still flawed. the film is about a hotel tycoon who wants to build a new hotel on a carribean island. the island just so happens to be filled with walking corpses who dont want their home to be used for the hotels. as you can probably guess by now, the hotel guy and his group soon fall prey to the zombies. erotic nights isnt all that bad if you enjoy cheesey italian films but everyone else should beware. the film is very cheesy and the acting, special effects, dubbing and overall look of the film is pretty low quality. also the film is pretty boring and dull until the final zombie attack at the end. leading up to that part we have an un-erotic hardcore sex scene and a few cheesy simulated scenes. if your patient through the tedious sex than you will enjoy the films zombie filled climax. a good film for fans of italian horror, just dont expect the best of the genre.
Laura Gemser fan.......2007-01-07
Would have given it a '5' except for the video quality. But Laura Gemser shows her assets and that is why I bought this!
Horror? More like "Horrible".......2006-09-01
Well I am a collector of zombie movies and I do own some real stinkers such as Zombie Lake, Revenge of the Dead, to name a few, but boy this one was a huge disappointement. All of the other reviews are true, it is so bad you will find yoursef hitting the chapter skip button. I knew not to expect much going into it, but I didn't think it would be this horrible. If you are looking for zombies, you will not find satisfactions here. There are a few scenes where you see these ultra lame zombie wannabes, very weak. If you get the unrated edition and want it for the porn you will find a lot, but you will find yourself getting tired of it quick. There are so many porn scenes that it seems they were just trying to add them in, made me lose interest in the movie immedeately as it got old. I would not recommend buying this. Buy something else and steer clear off of this one.
One of Joe D'Amato's best...........in the Zombie category........2006-08-20
First things first......this is a Joe D'Amato (Aristide Massaccesi) Zombie Classic. Any one who is a Joe D'Amato fan knows that in all of his films with an exception of a few the he mixes Sex and Horror together. So don't by his movies if you do not like movies like this.
A hotel developer purchases a cursed tropical island where he plans to build a luxury resort. Arriving on the god-forsaken island he finds opposition in the worm infested, flesh eating, walking corpses as they begin to rise from their graves.
Exotic Laura Gemser (BLACK EMANUELLE, EMANUELLE AND THE CANNIBALS, VIOLENCE IN A WOMAN'S PRISON) plays a sexy and mysterious apparition, who warns of grave danger! they dont make'm like this in the usa.......2007-01-06
and i like it that way. this film is absolute brilliance (though not a good place start on miike)
takashi miike is one of my all time favorite directors, his films almost never take themselves seriously, something some movie buffs might find irritating, but imo its just what makes miike, miike. his work may not be considered "brilliant" or "genius" (i sure as hell dont) but i doubt he does either. each of his films are like a passage into the director's own private world within. sometimes its scary, sometimes its funny, sometimes its sad, sometimes it can hardly be put into words, but all the time it is takashi miike. he is the true term, an artist.
now, praise aside, lets talk about the film. well there's the usual rounds of ultra-violence, quintessential dark, or "Selective" humor, one scene of necrophillia(dont over-hype yourselves), & what may be the strongest story of what is considered "the dead or alive trilogy".
the film tells the violent story of two orphan boys who part ways then meet years later as adult men, crossing paths through a path of ironic violence. the two learn that one & the other is a hit-man, not to mention both are fleeing after a "big hit" to the same island, its only normal to think that the island just so happens to be the same island they lived on as children.
i wont go to far into the story, many other people have done that already, i'll just say that what i got from the film was the story of two bitter halves of the same soul, who seek to find within themselves the happiness they lost long ago. although its story & character study is poignant, it still doesnt take itself seriously, miike always like to riddle his films with his own brand of dark humor. definately one of miike's best films, though not a good place to start (a better place to start would maybe be audition, the 1st dead or alive, or ichi the killer)
Huh?.......2006-06-02
I won't bore anyone with another summary of this film's plot. I'll just give my pure opinion. Quite simply, I just don't understand why anyone would take the time to make this film. The fact that I watched the entire film once is amazing. I understand the plot. I just don't understand why anyone would put so much effort in to something so unnecessary. At one point I thought to myself, "Perhaps I'm missing something. I need a second opinion." I showed Dead or Alive 2 to a friend of mine who used to write film reviews. She couldn't even get through the first 30 minutes of the film before cutting it off. There you have it folks---This film is a clear waste of time.
Best in the Dead Or Alive series........2004-12-19
This movie, IMO, is the best in the Dead Or Alive series. When I saw this movie I was amazed. I was initially expecting a typical Yakuza shoot em up film, yet this movie delivers a poignant story about lost childhood innocence, friendship, and life and death. It goes beyond expectations.
The movie starts off with an assassination that is supposed to ignite a war between the triads. But, before we know it, this movie takes a 180 degree turn as the two main characters of the film (Sho Aikawa and Riki Takeuchi) return to their boyhood, island home in search of their lost innocence. They were both raised on an orphanage before they became professional killers, so the idea of returning to the island is a return to their childhood when they were innocent. Once they arrive on the island, they meet up with their other boyhood friend, Kohei, who has become a modest fisherman as opposed to a hit man. For a while, Sho and Riki return to their childhood. They play like children, act like children, and live under an illusion of innocence and well-being while all hell breaks lose back in Tokyo because of their prior actions. The best example of this is the juxtaposition of the children's play scene and the ultra violent Yakuza shoot out scene. During this nostalgic visit it is fully realized that these two characters were meant to meet up again, that it was fate for them to join forces and work together as a team. They join forces and return to Tokyo. Once they are there, they start killing off gang members and donating the money to charities for children in third world countries. Therefore, they become angels of life and death by dictating who lives and who dies. They are saving children, yet killing off people in order to do it.
This is basically what Dead Or Alive 2 is all about. Its storyline is not a continuation of Dead Or Alive 1 in the traditional sense, which in many ways makes this film an entity of its own. With this movie, Takashi Miik proves that he is more than a traditional film maker. He keeps things interesting by not outdoing himself, but rather by doing things different; looking at things from different angles and throwing characters into alternate situations. There is no good guy vs. bad guy showdown here, it's just a good-old fashioned nostalgic story of life and death.
A DVD zone UNUSUAL SEQUELS.......2004-01-25
DEAD OR ALIVE 2: THE BIRDS is an unusual sequel to one of the most interesting cult movies of the last ten years : DEAD OR ALIVE. It's not properly a sequel because the two main actors don't play the same characters and the story isn't connected with DEAD OR ALIVE plot.
The atmosphere of the movie is also very different from the first DEAD OR ALIVE. A lot less hysterical editings and non-stop action sequences in this film clearly divided in three parts. Between the first and the last part where action movies fans will find back the Takashi Miike they know, the two heroes spend a few days in their native island, remembering their childhood in an orphanage. These sequences are masterfully directed by Miike who confirms here that he's a more than interesting director. Recommended.
Birds fly free.......2003-11-26
After the brilliant no holds barred Yakuza flick Dead or Alive, miike decided to continue, using Sho Aikawa and Riki Takeuchi (evil japanese elvis) with the same name for 2 more movies with different stories and characters.
Sho Aikawa is a hired sniper who is employed by a small mob to cause a war between 2 powerful yakuza groups.
When he positions for his prey, suddenly a member of the group(Riki Takeuchi) that protects his target kills every single gang member without a reason. Soon Aikawa is on the run with the money and he finds out that the yakuza who killed his group is a childhood friend with whom he grew up in the same orphanage. After ,they are teamed to kill bad guys for money which is sent to Africa for the injections needed for ill children.
Like the story points, movie is rather different from the first one. Characters are actually on the same side this time and althought there are loads of killing and violence, movie is more concerned with past and issues like friendship, childhood memories and little humanity which is still left in the hearts of Yakuza members. Also Movie has a very positive message, and unlike the first film, you will witness loads of nice landscapes.
When old friends visit their orphanage, they find their childhood innocence which is still hiding somewhere. But ofcourse that is a miike film and you will witness loads of violence especially in the scenes of dark metallic corridors where yakuza attack each other with pistols and katanas.
Dark irony, absurd moments, strange people (miikes trademarks) are of course all over the movie so have no fear.
Instead of repeating what he has done, miike chooses the hard way and makes a movie from the different point of view without loosing the plot or the control of the film. He also proves that he can shoot any type of movie he wants without falling flat on floor (proved in katakuris and bird people of china)
Although series of dead or alive will always be remembered for the first film (and especially the over the top cult ending), Dead or alive 2 is definitely a film not to be missed. One of miike's memorable films.

Creepy low-key horror film, crappy DVD, ripoff price........2005-12-31
ISLAND OF THE DEAD appears to be a made-for-cable or TV movie, shot in Canada. You can tell because the screen fades to black every 15 minutes or so for the commercial break.
This is a very low budget affair, making for a very low-key horror film. It's supposedly set on New York City's Hart's Island (where the city runs a potter's field for burying the impoverished or unidentified dead), but NYC can't be seen over the horizon as the ferry crosses the water. Just an insert shot of Manhattan at film's start to set the location.
Then there's the shot where Talisa Soto (who plays a cop) walks down Manhattan, glass skyscrapers behind her. She looks across at a ghetto-like street with boarded-up buildings. Obviously not shot on the same location. Editing those two shots together was truly unconvincing.
Story concerns evil rich man Malcolm McDowell (playing a casino owner/developer named "The Rupert" -- as in, "The Donald" Trump), who is building a low-income community on the island -- with sinister motives. He arrives on Hart's Island with an entourage and these evil flies attack. But they do so after most of the entourage has left, so there are very few actors on this island to attack. Just The Rupert and a handful of cops and prisoners burying the dead on potter's field.
Here's some sloppy story-telling: seems the flies only want to kill The Rupert, because when he dies, they stop. Talisa Soto marvels that the flies were after him. But then ... why did the flies kill several other people earlier in the film, and ignore The Rupert?
Anyway, the flies' bite is deadly, causing you to puff up in a disgusting manner before you die. Not a real gory film, but there is some creepy atmosphere. It actually helps that the low budget only allowed for a few actors. The location is nice -- a deserted island with abandoned buildings and grave markers. And the gray Canadian sky helps -- very much like in THE X-FILES. It's obviously not New York, but it makes for a decent horror film. Not great, but decent.
I disagree with the reviewer who said Talisa Soto looks old. She looks quite young, still. However, she looks awfully thin. Her face is so tight and thin, it's almost skull-like. I'd heard a story from a film industry friend that on the set of VAMPIRILLA, Soto was so thin, they had trouble keeping her costume from slipping off.
Somebody get this girl a milkshake and fries, fast!
The DVD is remarkably crappy, in that there is NO MENU. No special features, not even a scene selection. You pop in the DVD and go straight to the movie. Really, how hard is it to create a menu, with maybe some cast notes and scene selection?
Without even a menu, this DVD should be selling at the bargin bin price of $1.99 -- $3.99 max.
The DVD is full screen, but as this is likely a TV movie, that's likely the original screen format.
morally righteous and good characterization.......2005-12-04
it's hard to find movies like this anymore. 2001 release. It will be too hard for kids to understand and some wives might get bored because there's not a lot of action in the onset. No offense. It tells a story. The story is of an English billionaire who was trying to turn Hart's Island , which I've seen by the way, into a state backed housing and work unit for the un-adjusted in society, the same way that they used to bury them there , the no names, unidenifiable, etc.. there is no gore in this movie.. just maggots and insects. They wreak vengeance upon those that would intrude upon their resting place. I thought the cast was stellar but the production could have been better. Malcolm McDowell is a great actor that is spurned by modern Hollywood. Every single person was believable in the role, but I have to give it 4 stars because the message and the poignancy of it were a bit lost, and left for the viewer to understand, a bit more summary would have been apt. I blame the director for that .. the message is still there ( do not tread upon the dead ) but it could have been more forecefully done. Again, the cast was totally believable and congrats to those who starred here.
Absolutely ridiculous............2005-08-09
I just finished watching this movie about 12 minutes ago and I am still disappointed. The description of this movie is misleading, there are no zombies, no ravenous anythings, just stupidity laced with boredom. I waited for almost an hour for something to happen in this movie, and still nothing.
It starts out as if it is going to be a good movie but it's a lie. Im sure you've read the previous reviews you know the plot, or lack there of. There was one interesting part of the entire movie, and that was when the comic relief died. Now this means two things. For one, it took place in the middle of the movie so that meant the other half is a waste. Second, now there is no entertainment what so ever as far as dialog goes. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!!!
"Uhhh.......whens the good part coming".......2004-07-15
SUCKED!!!!! A guy buys an Island that is used to bury John Does, and other unknown people, to put up some place to help the homeless. Then, here comes the scariest part, a bunch of flies scare em away. I thought this was gonna be at least a semi-decent zombie film, but I was SOOOOOOOOOOO wrong. What happens? (counting), 5-6 people die by FLIES. Oooooh scary. This movie pisses me off. DONT BUY IT!!!!!! I waited an hour for something some what interesting to happen and the movies like an Hour and a half long. SUCKED!!!!! if I could have given it -1000000000000000000000001 stars I would. Oh yeah, if anyone wants to buy this from me for 6 bucks contact me through my e-mail.
BAD BAD BAD movie!.......2004-07-13
Watched this tripe last night. I heard supposed good things about it when they were making it. BAD BAD BAD movie! Children of the Dead level of bad.
First off, Talisa Soto is one fine looking specimen, but she's aged to a point where she can't pull off either Lara Croft or Vampirella, both of which were modeling gigs she had when she was younger. She even played Vampirella in the horrible movie version with Roger Daltrey as the heavy.
I don't know what they thought they were doing when they made this movie. The locale, Harts Island, is sufficiently creepy. A million bodies, mostly of the indigent have been buried there and should make for a good creepfest, except it isn't used much.
The bad guys are flies which are never seen clearly, although sometimes their perspective is employed by jerky camera moves that detract very strongly from the story. These jerk action moves are very obviously done on a tripod as all the jerks are across one direction or span. Whats more, the actual cinematography is poor. Sometimes, there would be a sweep across abandonned buildings (which we are told in an interesting story onc e housed the quarantined sick and then, later, the mad. This plotline is never brought up again) that goes right to left and then, inexplicably reversed halfway. Bad filming.
The flies themselves are laughable and there is no gore worth watching.
We should have a separate discussion about any movie starring Malcolm "If-Theres-A-Check-Involved-I-am-So-There" McDowell. He phones in his performance, pretty much like he's done in every movie since Tank Girl (last decent performance from him that I saw).
It has NOTHING to do with the Dead Universe, despite the title. Some people do die but their deaths are ridiculous.
The only person worth watching was the island manager, who actually was kind of interesting. I've never seen him before, have no idea what his name is, but he was pretty cool.
Mos Def is also in the movie, for the inane rap music connection.

No cap'n, we must not go there! It's eeeeeeevil!.......2007-02-06
Uwe Boll is a director who pushes the boundaries, and makes viewers ask themselves serious questions. Specifically, he pushes the boundaries of just how wretched a movie can be, and makes viewers ask, "Why is this guy allowed anywhere near a camera?"
"House of the Dead" is the perfect example of this, as the first of Boll's still-going stream of video-game adaptations. Put simply, this movie is a perfect example of everything that is wrong in video-game adaptations, zombie movies, and trashy action movies in general.
A gang of twentysomethings are planning the Rave of the Century, and for some inexplicable reason, they decide to have it on a remote island called the Island of the Dead (ooh, foreshadowing! Subtle!). The boatman warns a gathering of eight young people that they are all utterly doomed, but when they show him the money, he takes them anyway.
But when they get to the rave site, they find that someone has wrecked it and is presumably lurking nearby -- and they find a mysterious house in the woods. Of course, they go inside. And then they are attacked by hordes of zombies, who are at the beck and call of an evil creature living in the House of the Dead -- an immortal conquistador. (Oooookaaayyyy....)
No, it doesn't make sense, and it never STARTS making sense. You know a movie is doomed when it doesn't make sense from the get-go. Why would they host a rave at a campsite... on a remote island... with only a few people? That's pretty brainless, even for a low-rent game-adaptation/zombie flick. But sadly, the illogic isn't the worst thing about it. Boll is.
To be honest, Boll could not have made a worse movie if he had tried. He inserts bits of the video game, seemingly at random, and tries to make up for the limp plot with lots of Matrixy slow-motion and spinning camerawork. If that doesn't make you sick to your stomach, the dialogue will: "You did all this to become immortal. Why?" "To live forever!"
And the action scenes are the worst -- not a single fight looks real, and the zombies are distinctly unscary. At times it reminded me of King Arthur's fight with the dismembered, blood-spurty black knight... except Boll is utterly serious. He's also serious when he has our spoiled brats suddenly turn into hardened swordsmen, capable of defeating an ancient conquistador.
Want a decent zombie movie? Try the wittier cult movies by people like Peter Jackson and Edgar Wright. "House of the Dead" isn't witty -- it's witless, from start to finish.

Young Italian director Mariano Baino may hope to be the new Dario Argento, but he isn't there yet. In this cool box set that includes the cement medallion from Dark Waters, the feature, Dark Waters, is actually a weak link. Broaching the Italian Catholic subject of mysterious, demented nuns, Dark Waters tells the story of Elizabeth (Louise Salter), a sexy Londoner whose father has died and requested that she donate a portion of her inheritance to an isolated monastery in the Black Sea where her mother used to live, and where she was born. When Elizabeth visits, she becomes stranded, discovering that the nuns make blood sacrifices to appease a water demon, and her only confidant on the island, friend-turned-nun Sarah (Venera Simmons), turns out to be equally psycho. Candlelit sanctums, chanting, blind nuns, and bloody crosses liken this nunnery to a torture chamber, but the clichés ruin scary moments. Slow pacing in Dark Waters also lowers the scare factor. That said, the second disc featuring Baino's early shorts, is full of brief, eerie spectacles. "Never Ever After" is about a girl whose wish to rid herself of her body results in her beheading. "Caruncula" stars a grizzly serial killer, who is transformed into TV dinner upon encountering his match, a seemingly harmless young lady. In "Dream Car", a young man's demise is attributed to an evil red sports car. In these shorts, plots move along and gore happens faster, their ideas concise, original, and nightmarish, making the Dark Waters box set satisfying on the whole. --Trinie Dalton

Dark Waters of great horror........2007-05-05
I love finding these off-beat low budget horror films. The acting, script and direction for this film is supereb, considering the limited budget of the film. It is done in the old style od Argento and fulchi, with creepy, craggy, rainsoaked locations, evil nuns, and a very well written diolouge between the two main female charachters throughout the film. It is tense at times and really takes you into a sinister world of lies and satanic treachery.
True the ending is somewhat weak, but if you allow the director some room considering he had no money, it all works pretty good.
A four stars for this one. I'm going to order a copy now.
EXCELLENT HORROR .......2007-03-30
It's funny but two films came out in the same time period - "Dust Devil" and "Dark Waters". Most seem to consider Dust Devil the perfect horror film of that time and while I really enjoy that film also I find Dark Waters a much better film.
To give you an idea of the story and feel mix the amazing film "The Sentinel(1977)" With Stuart Gordon's masterpiece "Dagon" as if it was directed by Argento or Fulci and you get a sense of "Dark Waters".
It has a very strong Giallo feel and look to it, VERY italian horror with the music, atmosphere and shots. The film is shot very well and has that true sense of foreboding. It is a definite ode to H.P Lovecraft and the italian horror shockers of the 70s/80s. If you like any of this stuff then Dark Waters is for you!
There are three editions to choose from. (the single disc, double disc and special edition with the amulet replica). If you are a fan of italian horror and H.P Lovecraft then this is a must buy!
Brooding, "Lovecraftian" Nightmare.......2007-01-26
From the previous reviews, it seems that one either really likes this film or really detests it. After a bit of reflection, I'll have to count myself in the first camp.
"Dark Waters" is definitely not a usual off-the-shelf, paint-by-numbers horror film. Its appeal (from my viewpoint) is more subtle and mature by far than the hack-'til-you-drop gore-fare that some use to define "horror" today. For me, the dread and horror in "Dark Waters" developed gradually as the film slowly brought the viewer to the point of realizing that he (or she) is inexorably entangled in the tentacles of an inescapable living nightmare. I found myself thinking that if H.P. Lovecraft had nightmares, and if a film crew could enter into them and capture their essence visually and psychologically, the result would not be unlike "Dark Waters."
The film certainly isn't for every taste. If you like lots of violent action, tons of gore and quick gratification, "Dark Waters" will be unsatisfying. But if you enjoy being slowly drawn into a vortex of nightmarish hopelessness in a setting very reminiscent to haunted Innsmouth (with truly crazed nuns perhaps standing in for the depraved Cult of Dagon), then I think you might give "Dark Waters" a viewing.
what are your choices?.......2007-01-22
Keeping in mind that this obscurity was made on the cheap in Russia in the early 90s, there are a lot of positives here. The director tried to make a straightforward atmospheric ode to Lovecraft in a style influenced by the Italian greats, no ironic postmodern jokey humor here to dilute things. There are too few horror films of recent vintage with that kind of lofty ambition and so I give the movie an extra star for that. Some of the other reviewers have complained that the movie is way too derivative: there's really no question that Suspiria, Inferno, and Phenomena in particular influenced the makers of this movie and there are a few obvious/deliberate visual swipes/hommages here and there, but I don't see that as a problem myself. I'd rather see work by a filmmaker perhaps overly influenced by great work than one by someone who's imitating a bunch of crap.
Several of the sequences have nicely done and memorable imagery, are well lit and shot, and overall the movie looks pretty darn good for the low budget. The look of it (lots of rain in an old remote seacoastal town populated by sinister natives) sort of made me think of Stuart Gordon's later Dagon, though the two have a very different approach in tone. The acting is surprisingly not bad: the lead, Louise Salter is pretty and talented and it's a shame that this seems to be really her only movie (and the director's as well). The problems? Well, there are many awkward transitions and moments of poor plot/factual exposition which gives the film a somewhat random cobbled together feel (although the same charge can be said of Argento or Bava or other Italian greats to be fair); some scenes particularly in the middle drag quite a bit; the whole thing should probably have been quite a bit bloodier honestly; the low budget is a problem in a few key places; and unfortunately, the director cannot resist the temptation to include some creature effects toward the end that wind up bringing the whole thing down rather than doing anything positive (Didn't anyone learn from Curse of the Demon? Many other films of course make this same mistake: see Carpenter's Mouth of Madness for another Lovecraftian style narrative from this time period that also blows it badly by showing more than it should).
Bottom line, if you are a fan of serious 70s/80s euro-horror (particularly of a supernatural bent), you should probably give this a shot and watch it (perhaps rent first then decide on a purchase). After all, despite the shortcomings, there haven't been that many films made for those with these tastes in recent years, so it's not like there's a ton of other choices waiting.
Italian Euro-Horror film ripe for discovery.......2006-11-02
Superior 2 disc limited edition set (complete with resin amulet & 48 page booklet) from NoShame films - they have done this little seen, little known gem up right. Disregard that 1 star rating and review, and I couldn't disagree more with that statement that "Dark Waters" was trying to be the new "Suspiria"? I will say it is much more in the tradition of Bava-Fulci-Argento horror and Italian horror of the 60's & 70's then horror stylings of today.
An atmospheric, dreamlike, disjointed film (in the best tradition of Italian horror) with excellent photography, settings and sound that demands multiple viewings to fully appreciate it - one must remember this was filmed in the Ukraine just after the fall of the USSR on little to no budget so the results under such conditions were/are outstanding - the director is Italian, but based out of England so the dialogue was filmed/spoken in English - this is not a dubbed or subtitled movie. Highly recommended, esp. for those horror, euro-horror fans who have grown tired of the onslaught of joke horror, slasher horror, torture/gross-out horror and Japanese remakes of recent. Buy this set while you can - limited to just 3000 produced.
