Clint Eastwood may be a little too old (plus he kind of already did his own version of this movie in 1993's In the Line of Fire), but Harrison Ford could have been The Sentinel's lead and lent the same kind of top-flight Hollywood superstar craft that Michael Douglas brings as a superstar secret service agent fighting a frame-up in a panicky countdown to peril. That the marquee name could have belonged to anyone with the same chops as Douglas is no slam to him, Ford, Eastwood, or anyone else of their ilk. The Sentinel is a crackling good thriller because everyone involved is working at the top of their game. Pete Garrison (Douglas) is on the presidential protection detail when another agent is murdered. A creepy informer tells Garrison about an elaborate assassination conspiracy that's related and well underway. Garrison also happens to be having an affair with the First Lady (Kim Basinger), the stress of which causes him to flunk a lie detector test when word of the plot to kill the president becomes more than just paranoia. Garrison is soon on the run, being hunted by his protege David Breckinridge (Kiefer Sutherland, whose 24 experience gives his performance an extra edge). But Garrison is the best, using all his secret service wiles (and there are plenty, the details of which give added tension and authenticity to the taut script) to evade his former comrades as the clock ticks. You can often see the plot thickening a mile away, and as much as the movie wants to keep us guessing, the real bad guy is an easy mark for the audience. But the energy and kinetic skill which propel the action are always spot on and enough to keep us from caring about the giveaways. Co-star Eva Longoria is miles away from her Desperate Housewives role and miles away from any real import of character in the movie. But the rest of the cast and the whooshing forward momentum of style and anxiety are plenty to keep The Sentinel in full-tilt suspense mode from beginning to end.--Ted Fry

5 out of 5 stars COME ON - ENJOY IT FOR WHAT IT IS - ENTERTAINMENT.......2007-06-29

Why pick it apart unless it is really bad -------------
The Sentinal was great for what it was dealing with --- the Secret Service men and putting their lives on the line for the President - whether he is worth it or not.

Stories can be revamped over the years but the actors playing the parts lend much to the enjoyment -- "the affair" I could have done without - just makes one believe all the dirty laundry that is run through in Washington.

And we do need men of principle who will be willing to actually shot a friend if he is a threat. Way to go, Jack.
And there are too many innocent people being set up by the corrupt men and women floating around D.C.

I enjoyed the chase - the pace - the characters - most Secret Service guys are great --

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this movie for the story and the execution - the enjoyment of good entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-06-22

I watched this DVD twice in one week. It's fast moving and will really keep your attention.

3 out of 5 stars So-so.......2007-06-14

With all the talent involved -Michael Douglas, Kiefer Sutherland, Kim Basinger and Eva Longoria-- The Sentinel should have been a better movie. The idea is not a bad one: for the first time in history, there's a traitor inside the Secret Service, who's planning to kill the President of the United States. But screenplay has a lot of holes and flaws that not even this talented cast can overcome.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Suspense Story.......2007-05-29

I had a good time with this one. There were no real surprises, but everyone connected with the movie delivered great performances that allowed the story to progress at a rapid, suspenseful pace that never broke.

Michael Douglas stars as Pete Garrison, a seasoned Secret Service agent who took a bullet meant for Ronald Reagan. He's ageing comfortably well and spending his life in service to the office of the President as a personal protector to the First Lady. Unfortunately, Garrison has also fallen in love with Sarah Ballentine and he's been compromised for some time.

In short order, a plot to kill the president is discovered. All indications are that the plot is coming from within the Secret Service. They go on a mole hunt at the same time one of Garrison's confidential informers tells him about the mole. Someone also knows about Garrison's affair with the first lady.

After a few tense cat-and-mouse moments, Garrison is placed in the cross-hairs of the Secret Service investigation. His one-time best friend David Breckinridge (Keifer Sutherland) comes after him with a vengeance because he believes Garrison had an affair with his wife. Eva Longoria stars as new Secret Service recruit Jill Marin.

The movie evolves into a series of chases and mystery-solving that runs tight and neat to the end, although it doesn't really break any new ground. The movie is a great rental for movie night for both sexes that enjoy suspense stories with well-choreographed action sequences.

I watched the Blu-ray version. The audio and video formatting are excellent and are both uncompressed, giving the viewer the best experience possible if they have an HD monitor and surround sound system.

4 out of 5 stars Secret Service agent framed.......2007-05-14

Michael Douglas plays a long-time Secret Service agent who took a bullet in place of Ronald Reagan during his [...] attempt. Word has it that there is a plot to kill the current President and Douglas is supposed to be the man working on the inside to see that the [...] is successful. Investigators don't have to look far to uncover a motive, as Douglas has been carrying on an affair with the First Lady. Douglas has a tough job in eluding the investigators who are after him and trying to find the real Secret Service mole. This is a slick, fast-paced movie with plenty of star power in Douglas and Eva Longoria. It will provide you a good evening's entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad at all for 30 years ago..........2007-06-09

Considering it's from 1976...it's pretty good! Wouldn't take much to modernize it into a remake. Better than many of the "horror" movies that come out today.

4 out of 5 stars Scariest Movie I have ever seen........2007-05-29

Watch this movie in the morning or afternoon - way too scary for nighttime viewing - it will keep you up.

4 out of 5 stars Not Great, But very Unsettling.......2007-04-13

This another of the movies that scared me as a child that I have bought and watched in an effort to relive my childhood. While this movie isn't the best of the bunch it sure stays with you long after it ends.
Cristina Raines is a model who moves into a killer(in more ways than one) apartment only to be subjected to all manner of creepy and strange visions. The neighbors are also an assortment of weirdoes and slowly her life begins to unravel. To say much more would do you an injustice, you must watch this one and pay attention to follow the story. There are a few good gore scenes but for the most part this relies on the Gothic terror of the building and on long hidden secrets to make your skin get goosebumps. I like it at 12 and now at 40 I still like it.

4 out of 5 stars A very frightening flick that sort of falls apart at the end.......2007-02-22

"The Sentinel"is based upon the novel of the same name, written a generation ago by author Jeffrey Konvitz(who also wrote a sequel,"The Gaurdian")...The book is frightening, but ,like the film, sort of falls apart at the end...The plotline is as follows;A model with a checkered past, who has tried to commit suicide over family problems and who has lost touch with her catholic faith is now an up and coming fashion model..She has a trendy young lawyer for a boyfriend, and has just moved into a very nice apartment in a converted old mansion..What could go wrong?Well, for starters, the model(played by Christina Raines)is more or less being stalked by both demons from hell and the catholic church..It seems that her nice apartment is in a building owned by the catholic church and also happens to be the gateway to hell..To make matters worse, her boyfriend the lawyer(played by Chris Sarandon)may have had his first wife killed...
"The Sentinel"was written and filmed in the aftermath of the success of both"Rosemary's Baby" and "The Exsorcist"..while very frightening it nonetheless suffers by comparison, especially in the portrayal of the catholic church ..It will not be giving everything away here by noting that "The Sentinel"portrays the church as not only unforgiving and unnecessarily cruel(portrayals that,as history clearly shows,is not wide of the mark),but willing to punish a confused and mentally unstable young woman because of a suicide attempt...It seems that the building in which the young woman has moved has a blind old cleric living on the top floor,a mysterious figure,a"gaurdian"if you will, whose tenure has just about come to an end,and the church, without any regard for anyone or anything but its own neadrathal teachings, wants to replace the old cleric-cum-sentinel with the young model...
Now I know,of course, that this is a work of fiction, but, likewise,I also know that way back when the church had a ratherlow tolerance for those who,for whatever reason, attempted to self-destruct..Add to this the fact that the model was sleeping with the lawyer before his first wife died-or was murdered-and adultery is also added into the mix..At the conclusion of the film a second cleric, sent to guide the transitional from the old cleric to the model, tells the poor confused thing that,as far as the church is concerned, her attempt at self-destruction earned her an eternal place in "Hell" and that giving up everyday living in order to become a blind sentinel for the church was the only way she could avoid that fate...
Pardon me,but with that as a choice,I think that I would prefer Hell..History shows that the church was unforgiving towards suicides, refusing them burial in"consecrated"ground, and telling thier relatives that the victims were doomed to eternal hell...Nice,especially for a church that ALLEDGEDLY represents not only"The prince of peace"but the"God of love"...Konvitz took this sort of intolerant and ignorant thinking, added in a little from Milton's"Paradise lost"and lots of scares to come up with a dandy thriller, which Michael Winner transformed into an equally frightening film...Alas,because of this antiquated religious dogma about suicides, deservedly discredited today by most intelligent people, the ending flounders..For,afterall,grief,mental derangement, and countless other reasons might lead a person towards suicide and a church that claims to represent a"loving"God can hardly do so when it claims that same God would damn a person if he/she self-destructed under pressure or due to illness...much less so if the ONLY alternative would be to give up one's life,go blind, and sit forever at a window looking out at nothing in an otherwise empty house,an indefinite"sentinel" against a "Hell"that is more or less a figment of catholic imagination and, worse,a tool the church has used successfully for centuries in order to frightened people into obeying them without question...

4 out of 5 stars Great movie gets so-so treatment from Universal video..........2006-12-29

Young model in N.Y.C. wants some space from her boyfriend and ends up in a Brooklyn Heights brownstone crawling with demons! Released to DVD twice: the low-priced GoodTimes copy of "The Sentinel" obviously came from a print, with some muddy-dark action looking even worse in the full-screen format, however the sound quality is excellent. The Universal widescreen distressingly has a much deeper tone in the sound mixing--not affecting the music score, just the octave of the speaking actors--giving the viewer the incorrect impression that star Cristina Raines has a deep, flat voice. Other actors in the cast, particularly Chris Sarandon and Sylvia Miles, also sound as though they have nose colds. A quick comparison between the Universal DVD and the GoodTimes version shows that some vocal distortion is apparent on Universal's end, despite a cleaner letterboxed appearance.

A cool premise is the foundation for The Sentinel, a TV cop series presented here on three discs containing all ten shows from 1996. The pilot episode provides the backstory: Former Army Special Operations Captain Jim Ellison (Richard Burgi), sole survivor of a helicopter crash in the wilds of Peru, returns to the States, where, five years later, he's a detective on the Cascade, Washington police force. Seems his time in the jungle has had some unforeseen consequences, as Ellison's five senses have become, well, sensationally developed: he can hear things from so far away that Superman would be envious, smell things a bloodhound couldn't distinguish, see through pitch darkness, and so on. All of this is a mixed blessing; Ellison's sleuthing skills are clearly on a higher level than anyone else's, but his hyperactive senses are a little scary, not easy to control, and accompanied by some very weird side effects. Enter Blair Sandburg (Garett Maggart), a dorky-but-cute anthropologist who helps Jim sort out what's happening to him, in the process becoming his sidekick and the show's comic relief (it's a role somewhat like that of Dean Stockwell, Scott Bakula's holographic mentor in Quantum Leap). The Sentinel's stories are all over the place, involving warped serial killers, paramilitary goons, gangs and drugs, crooked cops, mob hits, and more. Fairly ordinary cop stuff, basically, except when co-creators Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo go the extra mile to exploit their premise, as in "Night Train," when a dose of cough syrup sends Ellison on a trip of psychedelic proportions. Overall, the show is slickly realized, with snappy dialogue, appealing characters (Bruce A. Young is a standout as Ellison's boss, Capt. Simon Banks), and some pretty decent special effects and action sequences. At the very least, it's enough to make one hope that The Sentinel's three subsequent seasons will be released on home video as well--maybe with some bonus features, of which there are none in this set. --Sam Graham

Description

This 3-disc set includes all 10 action-packed first season episodes, each of which features our hero, Jim Ellison (Richard Burgi), learning to control the extraordinary -- but unpredictable - hyper-vigilant senses of perception he developed while fighting for survival in the Peruvian jungle. The series follows him as he adjusts to his new role as a police detective and sentinel of justice, using his powerful senses to be an ever-vigilant watchman in the war against crime.

I worked nights when this series aired in our area and missed it completely. Thank heavens for the release of the season one dvd set, but when are the next three seasons coming out? It isn't what I expected, it was so much more. There seemed to be an honest liking and respect between the three main actors that made their parts shine. More please!

5 out of 5 stars Great show!.......2007-03-22

This was a great show, right from the beginning. It didn't have the rocky start in the first season that so many shows seem to have. I'm still waiting anxiously for the second season!

Thanks.

4 out of 5 stars Good Show.......2006-11-04

I totally enjoyed watching The Sentinel, The Complete First Season. I had seen a few of the episodes when it was on TV, but missed most of them. It was fun to be able to enjoy the show again and see how the Sentinel and his Guide first got together. I hope that there will be a release of all of the other episodes one day soon. I am sharing my DVD's with friends who are enjoying the show too.

3 out of 5 stars Don't be so hard on it!.......2005-03-31

Ok, the style of the first two films in the trilogy was really cool. Very dark and moody. The style of this one doesn't remain consistent with the frist 2, but it's just as good I think. There are alot of close ups, it's hard to describe. Don't compare this to big budget films. All horror fans will be pleased to see that Lance Henriksen who happens to be a B-Movie actor now, makes an appearence as a sort of bad guy? I guess. I think that watching some of the special features will help you to respect a movie better, and I'm not sure if there's a commentary or anything, but I've talked to the director alot over e-mail and he's a really nice guy. He has written the stories for the Splinter Cell games and is currently writing the movie, so if you don't like him for this, than like him for that.

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad At All.......2005-01-08

Despite all the bad reviews of this movie I have read, I actually found it to be a pretty good film. I mean, in some parts it may have been slightly lethargic, but over all, I found it to be a good film. The actors all did a very good job--they all have a lot of talent. I actually bought the film before I had even seen it, because my favourite actress played Carmen. I had heard bad reviews of the film, but I have never been one to rely on other people's judgement of films, because I usually enjoy films that get bad reviews. I guess you just have to be the right kind of person, because a great deal of the film does revolve around Marvin looking through his camera and taking pictures. If you haven't seen it, you should probably not buy it until you have, because like I said, you may have to be the type of person who enjoys most films as a whole. I guess it takes a real appreciation of the art.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst horror films I have ever seen!!!.......2005-01-02

Speechlessly disappointed!!! Why made a film so messy like this!!!

3 out of 5 stars Do what I tell you.......2004-11-10

Remember when you found that porno mag in the abandoned shack out in the woods behind yer house, remember that dirty feeling and how you scrubbed yer hands for hours. That's kinda how I felt when I saw the first Mimic in the theater. It was so bad it was criminal. Poor Roc and Mighty Aphrodite, how would you like to come off of a career making Woody Allen film and be known for Mimic.
That aside, Mimic 2 was one of those TBS flicks that you pass by on a sickly sunday morning nursing a headache and a gin. You are not sure if you are going to be sick and if you are then you have better things to watch out for then this blasted flickering on the TV.
Mimic Sentinels is as close to a real movie as I never thought you could get with 8 ft. cockroaches. Now don't get me wrong, there is no hybrid romantic comedic interlude with the line, "Now that bugs me" though there shoulda been. It's a straight forward, well shot, and paced little homage to two of our favorite things, Hitchcock and B-creature flicks. The actors were great, the characters were off the wall and inventive that gave the movie a strange feeling of completeness, you could have shot the movie without "The Garbageman" but then...what would be the point. I think this movie will be greatly appreciated by two types of people. Those that thought the first MIMICS were trash, and those that don't know there were a first two. I fer one just have to feign ignorance.
If you are in the mood, for a decent, (weak word), good (sounds better) direct to video release this is it. Shotguns, blood and enough content to keep yer significant other amused and maybe he/she won't think yer so dumb. Like the time you took him/her to see Demolition Man in the theatre....How did it last so long?
Buy it.

2 out of 5 stars Demise of the Series: No Scare, No Logics, and Fewer Bugs.......2004-10-20

'Mimic Sentimel' is the result of mixing two kind of films -- look how Marvin, a patient confined in a room, watching through a camera the people living in the opposite apartment, AND how he gets invloved with a series of death by the killing human-bugs.

While spending time taking photos of the outside, Marvin and his sister Rosie come to think they have witnessed a murder, and call the police. The standard plot device means that the cop would not believe in the story, or at least remain sceptical, and the thrill continues. In this movie, inspted of that, the cop starts to have a date with Marvin's mom (Amanda Plummer). Do you think we need this kind of plot development?

Anyway, after while the story strays into the alley, another girl comes into the room, named Carmen, and the two become Nancy Drew-like amateur detectives, and there is a strange man nicknamed 'The Garbageman' (Lance Henriksen, 'AVP' and many others).

But you don't see Grace Kelly here, nor Hitchcock's assured hand as director. The film suffers from a very disjointed script, which doesn't know how to scare, or even amuse us. The bad construction of the filmed shots only lead to the confused impression on our side -- actually, we don't know exactly whether some of the characters are killed or not, or how got killed. The bad acting from the leads only lessen the scare, and first of all, you don't see the lethal bug itself very much.

The only good thing is the photography that captured the creepy mood of the backyard of a decayed apartment. But the film is another disappointment from Dimention Films that once gave us 'Scream.' And someone please send e-mail address of Tarantino to Amanda Plummer, who was in the epoch-making 'Pulp Fiction.' (You remember that terrific diner scene, don't you?)
