IM SO PISSED OFF!!! WHY did fox have to can this so soon?!?!? ONLY 6 episodes??!! i'd hardly call that complete but ugh...I have so many questions, so many things need to happen...why couldnt they just finish out the season and then cancel it. I hate fox

4 out of 5 stars Complete not really sorry Tru........2007-06-09

I personally would'nt call this set of tru calling a complete set . because at the end your going that's it ? they really could've use a couple more episodes to tie up some of the questions and loose ends. it was just a shame because it was just getting interesting . shame on fox for canning the show it was just about to hit it's stride only to be struck down a not so patient media company. anyway the episodes in the set are good but not as complete as season one.

Tru Calling's trump cards are its intriguing paranormal premise and the lead performance by the underrated Eliza Dushku (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), both of which have earned it a small but loyal audience; both of these virtues are preserved in this six-disc set that includes not only the entire 2003 debut season but a surprising amount of supplemental features. Dushku plays Tru Davies, a young morgue attendant who discovers, much to her dismay, that she can hear the voices of the dead, as well as reverse their fates; with the help of her brother (Shawn Reaves) and boss (Zack Galifianakis), Tru relives the last day of these people's lives in order to prevent their untimely deaths.

Episodic highlights include "Valentine," which pits Tru against a serial killer; "Closure," in which a young war hero attempts to reunite with his girlfriend after his death; "Murder in the Morgue," which revolves around the killing of a bride on her wedding day; and "Daddy's Girl," which reveals some disturbing news regarding Tru's past and introduces Jason Priestley as the sinister-seeming Jack Harper, a man with powers similar to hers, but with very different intentions regarding the recently deceased. The six-disc set includes all 20 episodes of the first season (including the two-part finale), several featuring commentary by Dushku, Reaves, and the producers; deleted scenes, audition reels for several cast members, and a music video for Full Blown Rose's theme song, "Can Somebody Help Me," round out the extras. --Paul Gaita

Description

What if you had the power to change the future, by reliving the past? Eliza Dushko and Jason Priestly star in Tru Calling, a sexy, fast-paced show with dramatic ticking clock suspense that puts a stylish new spin on crime thrillers.

4 out of 5 stars Have Fun With Tru........2007-05-31

What a wonderful series too bad fox decided to ax it , the trouble was is they kept on moving it around to different time slots so i did'nt know what time it was on, until i heard it was on hiatus for a bit and hoped it would'nt be off the air for long i was wrong and it was canned alittle after that , what a shame. but now we have these seasons on dvd. i love this season one of tru calling except for one episode which is Star Crossed i wish it had gone in another way than it did, they completely ruined that episode for me personally (Spoiler Ahead) who wants to see two chicks kiss each other anyway yuck, the episode was so good and than they throw that in there, just watch the first 20 to 30 minutes of it to get what is going on, i would've rather seen a guy and girl if you know what i mean. besides that i loved every episode in this set , i wish the show would've gone longer than it did there could've been more stories to tell with davis, tru , luke and harrison what a fun bunch to watch in a show.

3 out of 5 stars If you love FAITH..........2007-05-08

...then TRU CALLING is certainly entertaining and is definitely worth watching, even though it's probably not a show that you'll return to that often. If you're looking to buy the dvd, you're probably already a fan. But in case you haven't seen the show on tv and are wondering if you should give this show a chance because you loved Eliza Dushku (and writers) from BUFFY, then this review is for you.

Unfortunately, Eliza and the role of Tru are a bad fit. The Eliza/Faith combo was absolute dynamite, and I'm a huge fan of Eliza as an actress. The character of Faith was complicated - Faith was all tortured and dark and bold-as-brass - in a word, fascinating. Dushku fit this role superbly and shone. Tru, however, is a (smart) every-girl trying to lead the audience through a world-gone-mad. BUT, Eliza is too colorful for the every-girl: she's too scrappy, sexy, and, frankly, interesting to really be a convincing Tru, a character who seems bland and boring by comparison. Having seen Eliza's performance as Faith, I kept hoping the writers of TRU CALLING would give her more material to work with -even if it was just internal - SOME arc to Tru's character. But, I guess the show really needed an every-girl, and it felt like Eliza's talent was stifled.

Ultimately, the show just didn't have IT. While the premise had a lot of potential, it wasn't fully realized. We had seen QUANTUM LEAP. We'd seen BUFFY. TRU CALLING needed an angle - a corner on the market of this genre. It wasn't that funny (although the Davis character was well done). It wasn't that suspenseful. There were some twists and turns to the plots, but the pacing was too slow for the savvy and sophisticated tv audience. On the commentaries, a topic of discussion was concern for the clarity of the show - selling the audience on the "outlandish" premise. But all of the little flashbacks to remind everyone of key plot points felt kind of patronizing, especially now after years of ALIAS and 24. Overall, I think they were too conservative out of fear of alienating their audience, which is too bad, because I really, really wanted to love this one!

4 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-03-12

I really enjoy all the episodes of the first season.. . i already bought the second one. it's a huge success

5 out of 5 stars Tru Calling is a Great Show and Ended Way Too Soon.......2007-02-15

I loved the premise of the show. This woman has the ability to save lives and does everything she can to, to the detriment of her own personal life does so. Eliza Dushku is a great actor and highly underrated. I loved her on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and she continues to prove her talent in Tru Calling. Shawn Reaves is talented and adds not just drama but certain type of comic relief. Jason Priestly, what can I say that hasn't already been said. He's not only extremely talented, but incredibly charming. He's got what they call in Hollywood the "it" quality. Rob Duncan who scores the show does a wonderful job. He did the final episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and it what an amazing work of art. He is quite the musical artist. I bought this DVD set without ever having seen any of it on television, trusting that the casting and creative people behind the scene would be enough for me to be assured that I would like it. Not only do I like it, but I love it. My only regret is that they didn't give the show a fair chance. I think at the very least that they should have been permitted to finish out the season. Just when Tru is going to find out about her Dad they end it. I felt cheated. It still had a lot of room for more great story telling and character development. You won't be wasting your money on this set Seasons one and Two.

5 out of 5 stars Tru Dat.......2007-02-12

I really like ED and was sadly disappointed when Fox ripped it off the air. Jerks! Typical of Fox though. Many were very sad that the show was off the air, but it's good both seasons are out on DVD. The second one is good, but again it leaves the viewer hanging; wanting more! We will never know what happened to Tru, her dad, Jack and the good doctor.

5 out of 5 stars Thomas is the greatest.......2007-05-31

My grandchildren love the Thomas the Tank Engine videos. We purchased some for them for Christmas, but did not have any to keep at our house for their visits. My four year old grandson specifically requested "Calling All Engines" and the only place we could find it was on Amazon. It has become one of their favorite ones. This morning they came to visit and the first words from our two year old grand-daughter was "THOMAS!!!!" So we watched it again. They never get tired of it and neither do the grandparents (and that is saying a lot).

5 out of 5 stars Thomas is awesome.......2007-01-11

We love Thomas here. The feature the newer DVD's are coming out with are great, being able to set it up to play over and over is great for those busy toddlers who want the movie to play and watch.

2 out of 5 stars Oh, how the mighty have fallen.......2006-10-07

I love the old Thomas, back in the days of Ringo Starr and George Carlin, but ever since Alex Baldwin came on the scene, the Thomas shows seem to sink lower and lower. Gone are the days when I could let my kids watch the shows without my having to view them first. And in addition to having more questionable content (see below), the shows are much more twaddle than they used to be. Older Thomas shows don't beat the kids over the head with the moral like these new ones seem to. And the stories in the older Thomas shows just seemed better.

This particular escapade has dramatic tension, and a good message about working together to accomplish good things, but the engines now use expletives -- okay, not grown-up expletives, but things like "Cinders and Ashes!" which my children started using as expletives. (They hadn't used expletives before, other than "Bother!") The engines call each other names ("Stinky Steamies" for example), and, again, my children started calling each other "stinky" for awhile. We hadn't had name-calling problems before the movie. Now, I realize that most kids are exposed to much worse, but I draw attention to this because the older Thomas episodes didn't have any of this going on. Three-year olds could watch with impunity! ;-> But for those who care about this kind of thing, be warned.

The older Thomas episodes are so much more wholesome, just stick with them!

4 out of 5 stars Thomas and Friends: Calling All Engines.......2006-07-19

Child likes this very much. This DVD contains many trains.

2 out of 5 stars Did I miss something or what?.......2006-06-30

Everywhere I look, people are talking about how great of a movie Calling All Engines is and "Oh!, It's soooooo much better than Thomas And The Magic Railraoad!". In my opinion, this movie is just as much of a load of garbage that it's preceder was. It is POOOOORLY writen; I mean the dialogue is horrendous. But I think the straw the really broke the camel's back was when they cheekily added those stupid activities. WHY!!!! I'd be watching this movie and then out of no where, one of those activities would come on screen.

I'm giving this movie 2 stars because I really do love Thomas, even though this movie does only deserve one.

2 out of 5 stars The more you think the worse it looks .......2007-02-14

Immediately after watching this film I was inclined to give it 3 stars because it didn't seem that bad, but I thought about it over night and the more I thought about the plot, the more holes I came up with. The twist on the plot was pretty obvious. Even the twist on the twist was pretty obvious. As for the interactions with Rachel and the ghosts... Paleeezzzee. That was just silly. And the reporter from the local paper. He was obviously thrown in just to fill time and make the film approach 90 minutes. My biggest problem with many of these 'B' slasher/ghost stories or whatever they are classified as would be: "Would a person in real life really do the things these people do?" No, only in movie land would otherwise intelligent people do stupid things that just invite trouble. Kind of like wearing a T-shirt saying, 'Hey, victim here'. The bad guy was pretty lame as far as bad guys go and the police were so incompetent that they could not work for Roscoe P. Coltrane in Hazard County. Really, as I write this I am tempted to reduce my rating to 1 star, but you gotta love Sid Haig playing a loving father. It would have been nice had this movie actually ended with us knowing what hapened to Sid's wife and the aftermath of Sid's meeting with Frank. We know the results of the meeting, but Rachel just seems to have forgotten her family that loved her and that she loved to return to New York and move on without giving them another thought...Totally out of character. And then there was the schlep that ran the Fillmore TV station. I guess he was the hero, or the heroine's love interest who, and I may be wrong about this, left his job as station manager to go to New York to...I don't know what. Watch his honey do shallow news reports. I guess this film is okay to watch but rent it at best. Don't buy it. I doubt if you will ever watch it again. In conclusion. Alexandra Holden. Very cute, but she mailed this one in.

4 out of 5 stars A Psychological Slasher Ghost Story.......2007-02-03

It's always fun when directors and writers mix genres. Mixing several tried and true horror themes (Slasher/Thriller/Ghost), A Dead Calling slowly unveils a woman's twisted past, which is coming back to claim her present.

The movie doesn't start off slow, though. Within the first five minutes the first murder has occurred, and you rarely go through 15 minutes of film without another slaying. Needless to say, by the end there is quite a body count. In the background of all this gore there are victims not quite ready to die, a house riddled with secrets, and a town conspiring to keep it all hidden. Plowing through all this is the job of Rebecca, a young investigative reporter.

There are many positives about the movie, not the least of which is getting to watch Sid Haig play a supportive and loving father, a departure in many ways from the character he played in House of 1000 Corpses and Devil's Rejects (of course, he was a different kind of loving father in those movies, I suppose). My only complaint is in a few ways this movie feels a bit unfinished at the end. I guess I was exspecting a final monster to pop out of the closet, so to speak.

All and all, this is a wonderful DVD, with a Hitchcock feel to the storyline. It would be a pleasing addition to a horror film library.

Recommended.

2 out of 5 stars A DEAD MOVIE.......2007-01-23

A DEAD CALLING is another of those low budget throwaways that you'll feel compelled to finish watching just because of the time you invest in it. Alexandra Holden sheepishly portrays a young tv journalist who suffers a breakdown when a stalker kills her fiancee. She returns to her hometown and joins the local small tv station where she finds herself embroiled in the mass murder of a family by their physician father/husband. There's hints of more than just journalistic involvement, however, when Holden makes a shocking discovery.
The movie suffers from a predictable and implausible script, and mediocre acting...the father is particularly laughable. For true lovers of the genre only.

2 out of 5 stars Slow and Fragmented.......2007-01-18

This movie had a hard time keeping my attention. It's not so bad when it comes to low-budget horror but it had it's fair share of problems. It's paced too slow which makes it boring most of the way through. Too many of the story pieces felt like they were just thrown in "just because" to me as well. It's pretty anti-climactic too. The only thing that redeems this film in any respect is the 'classic' ghost story elements. Rent it and make up your own mind but I wouldn't suggest buying this one.

4 out of 5 stars well ok.......2007-01-13

it look like a tv movie but the scenario is very good so it is'nt the movie of the year but if you like ghost movies you can try this one
i didnT feel the time goes on and some scenes are a little bit scary but it is not the grudge

5 out of 5 stars Best Thomas Adventure EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-03-23

Man if youve watched Thomas and the magic railroad this is perfect! This one brings Diesel 10 back and at the end you'll see him smile honestly! GOod Idea!

5 out of 5 stars "Calling All Engines" - recommended by kids and mom alike!!.......2006-01-28

This is a wonderful video and we highly recommend it. Besides having tons of Engines (of both a coal and oil persuasion), Harold, and Sir Topham Hatt, there is a pretty good story about cooperation, and the fact that our differences are what make us special.

The story begins with an announcement that a new airport is going to be built. Orders are given to both the Diesels and the Steamies but trouble starts when Thomas decides to play tricks on `Arry and Bert, and Diesel. In one case, Thomas substitutes bananas for construction materials.

He and Percy have a good laugh, but soon find that everything has backfired. When they go home they find that one of the important jobs the diesels had was to rebuild their sheds. The old sheds were destroyed on time, but there was no supplies to build new ones. Consequently the gang are split up into shelters all over the island.

This bad situation is made worse when a hurricane rips through the island. What little work that was done on the airport is undone, and the beautiful new suspension bridge is mostly gone!

The Steamies decide that they need to work really hard now, but their plans fall in disarray as the Diesels retaliate to Thomas' pranks. [This is a good opportunity to point out to children that actions have consequences: good and bad.]

This long story, much like the television versions, are interrupted with breaks of music and games. In the case of this Video, the games involve practice logical reasoning skills. And unlike the TV show, most of the game-breaks have something to do with the story. For example, the first break comes after a mention of the age-old animosity that exists between the Steamies and Diesels. A discussion ensues about what the real differences between steam engines and diesels engines are. Steamies use coal and have whistles, for example, while diesel engines burn oil and have horns.

In any case, real trouble comes as biffing and bashing begin to go on all over the island. Things go so badly that the Steamies all begin to have nightmares as to what might happen to them if no tourists come. Everyone but Thomas. He dreams of Lady who he finds high in the mountains, shunting cars with Rusty. She tells him something to the effect that she and Rusty always get their work done with they cooperate.

This sets the wheels in motion and soon everyone is working together and everything is done... until an accident which, at the last moment, takes the runway out of commission. What can they do? Thomas (the principal good guy and Steamie) finds the solution in asking Diesel 10 (a former principal bad guy, now more realistically portrayed (lol) as a lead grumpy, strong, and scary diesel) for help. Yeah differences. Yeah cooperation. Just the stuff for small fry.

Five Stars. Good story. Good lessons. We also get to learn a lot more about Sodor on this video and we certainly get to see lots of trains. I don't know what parents of younger children find, but I know that my almost 4 year-old son loves this video. He has actually managed to sit for the whole 150 minute running time, and then wanted to watch it again!

3 out of 5 stars HIT Entertainment Falls Short Again.......2005-10-12

My two-and-a-half year old and I have watched Calling All Engines approximately a dozen times since we purchased it about a month ago. We are both huge Thomas fans and so I write this review with mixed emotions. I would like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this DVD, but alas, even my precocious wee one, likes this video less than its predecessor, Thomas and the Magic Railroad (2000)

The storyline of Calling All Engines is entertaining, the scenery, as in all episodes of Thomas and Friends, is outstanding, and the songs are entertaining. The DVD also contains bonus features including an interactive game, a read-along story, Diesel 10 Means Trouble, character gallery (the weakest of the bonus features), deleted scenes, and a music video. Although diehard Thomas and Friends fans will enjoy this video, there are problems with the film that make Calling All Engines substandard.

Although HIT Entertainment has great success with its television programming, they seem to fall short when it comes to producing feature length programs.

Michael Brandon fails miserably as the "storyteller." He seems unable to remain in character for more than a few seconds and oftentimes slips from a character's voice to the narrator's voice in mid dialogue. Furthermore, in several places he mispronounces words, for example, bananas is pronounced "bananers." He evens manages to mispronounce Sir Topham Hatt's name! These are problems that should have been corrected with ADR, but for some reason HIT entertainment choose not to do so.

The continuity and flow of the story are destroyed by the frequent interludes where Mr. Brandon asks the viewing audience to make choices for the characters, or to teach little lessons. For example, the story is interrupted, early on, for almost four minutes to ask the audience to identify characteristics that set steam and diesel engines apart. If this interruption in some way advanced the plot, or assisted in the development of the characters it might be acceptable, but it does neither. Finally, these interludes are often animated which is visually distracting given the care that was taken in creating and photographing the other scenes.

In addition, the film is advertised as being "closed captioned" which it is not.

For all its flaws, Thomas and the Magic Railroad which incorporated stop action photography and live action was a far more rewarding film. Perhaps in its next outing HIT entertainment will take what it has learned from these two efforts in full length Thomas features and produce the kind of film that Thomas and his friends deserve.

4 out of 5 stars Calling All Engines review.......2005-09-27

It makes you wonder why they would even bother making another Thomas movie after "Thomas and the Magic Railroad", but this time they got it right. No live cast, no Mr. Conductor, no Alec Baldwin, all Thomas. The only similarity this movie has to "Magic Railroad" is Diesel 10. But in "Calling All Engines" Diesel 10 isn't the creepy, evil character that he was before. His character change is for the better, a kid's movie doesn't need a homicidal talking engine in it.

I have to say that I did like it. It was much better than the recent episodes and it was just fun. A great movie for any Thomas fans. The movie was really entertaining (some parts were laugh out loud funny) and Gordon and Percy had some great lines. Michael Brandon did very well his voices (notably Diesel 10, Arry, Bert, Lady, and Henry). It was also nice to see some memorable old characters who made appearences. Small cast, which I liked, that had every main character.

Though the story was simple and predictable, the movie was still entertaining. Nowadays, Thomas isn't known for it's excelent storylines (which is a pity, but Calling All Engines is never boring, and fans of Thomas will like it.

I even liked the songs. Out of all of them, "The Dream Song" was my favorite (only on the DVD). Every one of the songs were catchy and upbeat, some of the best in the entire series.

The interactive bits were added into the middle of movie. It wasn't terrible, but it did interrupt the flow of the movie. You may want to see them once (they are, unfortunently, part of the movie's plot) and then fast-forward past them the next time you see it.

The only main flaws of this movie were the visuals. I liked Calling All Engines, the visuals and locations were as bland as ever. There were some familiar scenes from past seasons, but most of the movie had some very dull locations. In Magic Railroad there was Shinning Time, the Magic Railroad, Muffle Mountain, and the busy yards. In Calling All Engines, Sodor doesn't feel like the bustling railway that it used to. The locations seem the same all over the island and makes the railway seem much smaller than it really is. The endless, flat, countryside is as dull as ever and doesn't have anything in it (aside from the occasional signalhouse). Even the smelters is boring and doesn't have the life and energy that it did in "Stepany Gets Lost". I know that the locations have been this way for a while, but I was expecting more in a full-length movie.

Aside from the minor flaws of the locations and interactive segments, "Calling All Engines" is fun for any Thomas fan. Recommened.

5 out of 5 stars A GOOD EXPERIENCE.......2006-02-18

ITS RICHARD PRYOR THERES NO MORE TO SAY IT DIDNT HAVE TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE FILM BUT THE SKITS SHOWED A SIDE OF PRYOR THAT WAS REAL A PART OF HIS LIFE THAT HE REGRETS BUT KNOWS THAT IT MADE HIM SMARTER

5 out of 5 stars The Life and Times of Richard Pryor.......2005-12-14

Basically, my title sums it up. Richard Pryor plays pretty much himself here (why he chose the non de plume "Jo Jo Dancer" was probably to change the names of all characters in the film to protect the innocent). Aside from his army days and getting kicked out of school, as much of the major stuff that could be compressed in 2 hrs is here-growing up in the house of prostitution, the effect this had on his psyche, his troubled relationship with his father (it's really sad and embarrassing to watch a grown Pryor get cursed and slapped around by his Dad in front of his young wife), his early struggles in showbiz, drking and dope problems, etc. etc.

But Pryor's sermon near the end is a relavation and would have been a perfect coda to end his comedy career in films (this film was made at the time he began to get the symptoms of MS). Sadly, later abominations such as "Another You," "Moving," "Critical Condition," and "Harlem Nights" (REALLY tragic considering the talent involved) did not do well for his legacy. But if you stop here, this is a great way to remember the genius that was Richard Pryor (RIP).

4 out of 5 stars Richard Pryor, up close and personal.......2005-12-13

Watching "Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling" is a bit like being in a bar, sitting next to a total stranger who begins to tell you his life story. It's an uncomfortable situation and you find yourself alternately embarrased and appalled, but totally engrossed and ultimately sympathic to this man's plight. You begin to wonder how a man who has suffered so much can produce so many laughs.
The movie is autobiographical, with artistic license taken from time to time, but it really gets at the soul of the man who was Richard Pryor. Many Pryor fans may be shocked -- not at the language, but with the emotional frankness with which Richard reveals himself. And he admits that he has brought much sorrow on himself and the ones who have loved him.
Casual fans will probably be put off by the lack of laughs, but those willing to dig a little deeper will come away with an understanding of Pryor and the pain that he was able to forge into incredible comedy -- comedy that exposed more truth about society than many artists, philosophers, writers, or social reformers of the 20th century.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! For owners or trainers - teach your dog to come when it really counts.......2007-03-15

Great DVD for the average pet owner to start working with their dog on an emergency recall. There is also a section for those who own hounds, terriers or northern breeds that are less inclined to come when called. Learn how to use the name game, rules of a really reliable recall and the three reasons why it may be failing.

The goal is a reliable emergency recall but the added bonus is that you are building a better relationship with your dog as well as a regular recall.

There's also a section if you are in instructor on how and when to incorporate it in your classes.

This really should be a 'must have' for every dog owner.

Leslie will be a guest author at CSDogBookReview in August 2007, come check her out!

5 out of 5 stars Africa Calling! .......2006-06-12

This is the only Live 8 concert that featured predominantly African performers. I have come to know many African performers by contimplations by Putumayo Records and with working with African Refugees in America. It was fun to see these performers on DVD and appreciate their music even more. I really enjoyed the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Live 8 Eden - The Roots of Africa.......2005-10-13

I was lucky enough to attend the Cornwall event at the Eden Project. For those who are unfamiliar with the venue, it is an area in Cornwall, England that had huge biodomes. Guests can come to learn about all kinds of plant life and discover the green planet. This leg of the Live 8 concert was a bit different in that it included primarily performers from Africa. It was a heartfelt relaxed day mixed with music and dance. I imagine that the other Live 8 events were more commercial. (...) The day was absolutely memorable and I woudl strongly suggest picking up this DVD to learn more about the music and cultures of Africa.

4 out of 5 stars Evil has a name and its name is Dylan.......2007-05-12

Maybe Dylan isn't his name. Maybe its Bob. Whoever it is, he is still a whimp compared to damien. Have you seen this movie? I am watching it now so I don't really know what its about yet. I will now watch it instead of writing this stupid review. Was this review helpful to you? Probably not.

1 out of 5 stars Have you heard the one about the lady who had the Devil Baby?.......2006-03-16

Laura Harris (The Faculty, Mighty Wind) plats Kristie St. Clair marrys Marc St. Clair, played by Richard Lintern (Syriana, Starlings) and winds up having a son Dylan St. Clair, played by Alex Roe (The Fugitives the TV Series). The Son later soon possses greater powers beyond the eye can see and Harris is subjected to trying to find out what the hell is going on as things turn on her. Carmac, played by Francis Magee (The Bombmaker, Butterfly Man) tells Harris that there is something wrong with her son and so on and so forth. Not much here, lacks energy and interest with dull characters, bad acting and bad writing. By the end I knew that the Carmac character played her...you could see it coming a mile away. This also wasted Alice Krige (Star Trek: First Contact, upcoming Silent Hill) as well. Also starring John Standing (V For Vendetta, A Good Woman). Skip this and watch something else. Tries to hard to be other movies (Rosemary's Baby, Damien...so forth)

4 out of 5 stars DAMIEN WHERE ARE YOU?.......2004-01-15

THE CALLING is a movie that pleasantly surprised me. Obviously it is the Omen brought into the twenty-first century. The movie is dark and foreboding, but the cinematography is lush and gorgeous. Laura Harris as the doomed Mom is convincingly baffled, shocked and devastated. Richard Lintern as the surrogate father from hell is handsomely sadistic and suave; the gorgeous Alice Krige (from Ghost Story) is appropriately sardonic and bewitching; and the little boy who plays Dylan makes Damien look like a boy scout. Throw in the gentleman who plays the mysterious Cormac and you have a cast of mysterious proportions. The movie moves well and has quite a stunning finale. It's not as good as THE OMEN but it's better than its two sequels.
    A surprise winner.

    3 out of 5 stars I'm Calling It 'Decent'.......2003-11-15

This surprised me. I thought it was going to be garbage. Thankfully, it wasn't. As someone has said previously, it takes bits from The Omen, Rosemary's Baby, and I would add The Wicker Man. So, it isn't too original. The acting, though, is quite good, especially Laura Harris, who has an uncanny resemblance to Jennie Garth. To the person who said they couldn't believe they'd wasted two hours on this -- you overslept, 'cause the movie is only 89 minutes long.

4 out of 5 stars If you like "The Omen", give this DVD a try.......2002-07-06

First of all, Artisan released this title without any special features (just a theatrical trailer) and presented in Full screen and 2.0 Dolby Surround only. But the DVD surround sound is quite good and the full screen picture is fine.

The story about young woman who believe her son is the "antichrist" but no one else believe her. There is a nice plot twist at the end of the movie that I didn't see it coming. It really enhanced the level of enjoyment. This 2000 movie is far better that the 2 big budget movies with similar theme that came out in 2000 (Bless the child with Kim Basinger, and Lost souls with Winona ryder).

If you like OMen type of movie, this DVD will not disappoint you. Highly recommended.
