Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful movie.......2006-12-28

Although this movie departs greatly from the original fairy tale, it is still worth purchasing. It is well made, the acting is superb, with Isabella Rosselini reminiscent of her wonderful mother Ingrid Bergman. I taped this for my daughter on VHS many years ago and she watched it so much! It is very well done and no one who buys it will be disappointed. It would be intense for very young children, however.

5 out of 5 stars To be perfectly honest..........2005-10-04

I am 15 years old and I've only seen this movie 2...3...4...times? Something like that. We have a crumby tape recording of 4 songs of the movie. It doesn't matter to me how crumby the recording is; I've listened to it religiously for years. That's how good the songs are.
It has been noted here that "Never Talk to Strangers" is a favorite song of many. It's my favortie as well. It's absolutely incredible how the werewolf is developing his own personality. He is warning the girl, quite literally, of himself. He seems exasperated when she doesn't listen - of course the carefree Red Riding Hood doesn't take anything anyone says seriously. I have wondered whether he is honestly hoping in a hidden heart (unlike his truly heartless master) that the girl will be able to stay away from him, or only slyly winning her trust. That's only a tiny, twisted piece of how great the plot is.
All in all, it's very true what the other reviewers have said - this is nothing like the original story we all know. It's better. It's been expanded into a world of lifelike characters, the simple life of the harvest (Green in the Blue), Corrupt politics (Red's uncle, naturally), war (her father was fighting)... and everything else you could hope for in a fairy story. A wonderful tale to grow up on. I know that from experience.
One last thing I note, is that it does not portray the wild wolf, a natural animal quite as badly as the old tales because it is a summoned werewolf, not a natural wolf, who does the evil. This is a winning point in my book since I'm a majorly pro-wolf person. :)

1 out of 5 stars Surprisingly bad.......2004-12-31

I bought this because it is made by Cannon Movie Tales and I love "Puss in Boots", which they also made. Because "Puss in Boots" was so good, I thought this would be, too. Alas, I was disappointed. "Red Riding Hood" has almost no relation to the story we are all familiar with. The plot in the actual fairytale is more of a parenthetical remark than the main story line in this movie. Add to this that the acting was rather painful and the special effects were anything but special and you are left with 1 star. The one thing it had going for it was that it was perfectly clean and not very scary for youngsters. Since small children are easier to please in the cinematic area than adults, perhaps they would still enjoy this adaptation to "Little Red Riding Hood".

5 out of 5 stars GREAT .......2004-12-30

THIS IS A GREAT MOVIE AND ITS AWSOME THAT IT IS FINALLY ON DVD BUT WHEN ARE THE REST OF THE CANNON MOVIE TALES GONNA BE OUT ON DVD?

5 out of 5 stars A Captivating Addition to your Fairy Tale Film Collection!.......2004-05-28

We all know the story of Red Riding Hood. The girl who takes goodies to her grandmother and forgets she's not suppossed to speak to strangers ,right? Well, I am pleased to say that this film is the best adaptation of Red Riding Hood on film but it also delivers lots of wonderful surprises. The last film in the wonderful Cannon Movie Tale series is really one of the best in the collection. Amelia Shankley, Isabella Rosselini and Craig T. Nelson give captivating performances and the film is also very well directed. This film is not boring, it is actually very powerful. However, this is not a film for the very young ones as I found myself flinching at parts and somewhat taken aback by some events that happen in the film. The songs and dance sequences are wonderful. It's great that the original trailer is included with the DVD. The picture is crystal clear and the sound is also on-par. I highly recommend this film, as it delivers lots of surprises and although it is the story of Red Riding Hood that we all know and love, there is alot of original ideas that everyone will be delighted to see!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Don't be hoodwinked.......2007-02-07

I was amazed at how many big name movie stars are in this made for DVD musical. The only decent song in the whole show is one borrowed from the 60's/70s rock group Sam the Sham and the Pharohs. If you wish your children watching other children spitting on adults as sport then this is the movie for you. There are other instances that I found disgusting. While this is an updated version of LIttle Red Riding Hood, I would not recommend this for 12 and under. Young teens will find the spitting and other vulgarities humerous, I'm sure.

5 out of 5 stars Delightfully funny and charming and not too scary!.......2007-01-30

My almost four year old granddaughter picked this film as she already knew the story of Little Red Riding Hood from her mom and dad. I was a little concerned it might be too scary as it is PG but I should have realized that she was able to handle it very well.

The wolf is a werewolf. Lainie Kazan is the grandmother and is reading the story to her grandchildren. Lainie is wonderful in this!! If you are over 50 you may remember her singing on the Mike Douglas Show or on Ed Sullivan.

While the wolf swallows people whole, it is done by special effects that make it look cartoonish thus not scaring even my granddaughter! She really loved the whole film and was very enthusiastically telling her aunt, one of my other daughters, how good it was!!

If you have a mature preschooler who understands pretend and cartoon violence, they will enjoy this as the singing and fun stuff are hilarious. There is a precarious situation for the two kids in the film but even that is broken by humor and turning out not to be as dangerous as it looks. Otherwise I would recommend the viewing be by at least 5 or 6 year olds.

This movie is so entertaining I watch it with my children every time they put it on. We quote it, and sing along all the time. I rented it and my 4, and 2 year old girls watched it so much i had to buy it.

I bought the DVD for my daughter's 7th birthday. Both she and my 5yr old love the movie. They sing the songs from it all day long.

I have this collection and collection 1 and both are invaluable at home with my son who is 10 and likes to "play" in the DVD and for school in my Kindergarten class. Read the books to your children first and see how excited they get when they can watch the book. The addition of great readers and music really brings the stories alive. But remember, they don't take the place of you reading to your child every night!

Three enchanting fairy tales, adapted to video, are a fitting tribute to the late James Marshall (1942-1992), whose whimsical illustrations are as celebrated as his playful prose. Film takes up where the storybook pages end, bringing Marshall's creations to life, such as the naive Red Riding Hood, the presumptuous Goldilocks, and the oddly endearing Three Little Pigs. Scholastic honors Marshall's fresh humor and poetic irony, while enhancing the imaginative storytelling with musical compositions by Ernest V. Troost and Jaroslav Celba. Older viewers will enjoy the added feature "Getting to Know James Marshall," a memoriam of excerpted interviews in which he candidly shares his life and craft. Also noteworthy are the DVD's two additional stories, Rapunzel by Paul O. Zelinsky, and Chicken Little, by Steven Kellogg. Suitably paced with bright colors, each story stays true to its original tale--without sugarcoating the details--yet parents can rest assured of age-appropriate renderings and happy endings throughout. (Ages 4 and older) --Lynn Gibson

4 out of 5 stars Authentic retelling of tales.......2005-10-13

This DVD provides an authentic retelling of classic folk tales for young children. One reviewer was amazed to find out that these stories include unpleasantness. Nursery tales like "The Three Little Pigs", "The Three Bears", and "Red Riding Hood" have value for young children, even though things get broken and people get gobbled up! If stories do not have a real problem and a real solution, stories are not authentic or interesting.

I wonder if the reviewer who was shocked to find these elements in a video of fairy tales could possibly have been serious. Maybe, as that reviewer suggested, these are not a good choice for a 2 year old. There's no real reason for babies to watch TV at all; it's a much better idea to read to them. I recommend this DVD for children aged 4 to 8 who have already been read the real stories.

1 out of 5 stars Scary Video!.......2005-07-26

I was shocked when I turned on this DVD in for my 19-month-old. Granted, he is 5 months younger than the recommended age. But in Red Riding Hood, the Wolf "gobbles up" Grandma! I stopped this video immediately. Even though Liam couldn't grasp the concept, even I was taken aback at the brutality (yes, brutality, and I'm not a prude) of this story.

In the Three Little Pigs, the Wolf again eats two of the Little Pigs. In fact, when the Pigs are whirling about in the air with their straw or wood houses, the Wolf is waiting on the ground with an open mouth. I don't recall all of this killing and eating in these stories when I was growing up.

In Goldilocks, Goldilocks tips over Big Bear's porridge, breaks Baby Bear's chair, and makes an overall mess of things. We stopped this one, too. I also bought the Llama and Cow DVDs, hopefully those will be better for toddlers.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Favorite!.......2005-06-09

This is the most beloved collection of animated tales in our household. I have come back to Amazon to buy my second copy because the first one was overhandled by my toddler, who is absolutely enchanted with all the stories; he has even warmed up to the segment with James Marshall, enjoying the active sketching and drawing.

The quality of animation of each story is superb, with spirited narration and music with each - something the adults can appreciate as they are watching it...again. Although the collection is recommended for children 4 years and older, my 2 year old loves these animated stories. His favorites alternate, but he usually wants to view them all atleast once before going back for a second peek at another.

Other popular animated stories in our household include Strega Nona (pasta pot!) and Chrysanthemum (mouse!). I have tried others by Maurice Sendak, William Steig, and even Dr. Seuss, but have not had winning results.

5 out of 5 stars James Marshall's witty fairy tales on DVD.......2004-02-03

James Marshall wrote and illustrated many picture book adaptations of popular fairy tales for children. Scholastic and Weston Woods have converted the picture books into animation shorts that are available on DVD for the first time. This disk includes Marshall's renditions of "Red Riding Hood", "The Three Little Pigs", and "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" (a Caldecott Honor Book). Two bonus shorts are included of Stephen Kellogg's "Chicken Little" and Paul Zelinsky's "Rapunzel." James Marshall's adaptations are humorous, colorful, and far from sappy. His unique wit doesn't change the tales too much, but still makes them his own.

The tales are recommended for preschool ages and up, but they are some of my favorite versions as an adult. This DVD is guaranteed to become a favorite in any household. Don't miss Marshall's original picture books either!

5 out of 5 stars A HILARIOUS GEM FROM "FAERIE TALE THEATRE".......2007-06-29

Mary Steenburgen and Malcolm McDowall (who were married at the time) have a wonderful time playing Little Red Riding Hood (Mary) and Narrator and the Big Bad Wolf in this hilarious gem from Shelley Duvall's outstanding "Faerie Tale Theatre" series.
The teleplay, by J. David Wyles, Mark Curtiss, Rod Ash, and directed by Graeme Clifford, expands the familiar story to become a coming-of-age tale. Mary is rather overprotected by her parents, so it's little wonder that although she's been told not to talk to strangers she dearly wants to. Dad has some rather old-fashioned ideas about gender roles; what jobs are "appropriate" for "men and women", and Mom (Diane Ladd) comes across as a bit of a domestic airhead. Pretty Steenburgen is easily connvincing as a young teen-ager, so the slight suggestion of a budding romance between Mary and Christopher, her dad's woodchopping assistant, is added.
Frances Bay is a hoot as beloved Granny, who likes to drink wine. On her way to Mary's birthday party with a little red riding hood as a gift, she encounters McDowall as Reginald Lupine, the Big Bad Wolf, and really lets him have it. McDowall, wearing superb make-up and utilizing a hilarious Cockney accent, calls Granny an old "scag-bag." He does get some revenge on both Granny and Mary. But Christopher comes by and cuts the sleeping wolf's expanding stomach open with scissors. Mary and Granny are both safe and sound inside, but I laughed when Granny actually yelled, "I damn-near suffocated." Mary devises a plan to make the wolf pay for his wicked ways. So, in the end, Mary is as wise as she is pretty. A delightful treat for all ages.
RUNNING TIME: 57 Minutes.

This is a fun movie to watch,it is entertaining from start to end.I Love everything about it.

4 out of 5 stars Little Red Riding Hood Review.......2005-01-20

This version of Little Red Riding Hood is one of the better ones you will see, it is comical but sticks to the traditional story of this fairy tale. Though it isn't the best Faerie Tale Theatre production it still is fun and appropriate for people of all ages. The crew does a good job of acting and giving the characters personality. The costumes are wonderful and you will love the Big Bad Wolf in fact you might EAT HIM UP.

4 out of 5 stars an enchanting FAERIE TALE.......2004-10-28

Straying from the path and talking to a stranger can be a dangerous thing, so learns the heroine of FAERIE TALE THEATRE's retelling of LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD.

Mary (Mary Steenburgen) lives with her parents (John Vernon and Diane Ladd) in the middle of the forest where her father works as a woodcutter. Her only friend is her absent-minded Grandmother (Frances Bay) and she yearns for the adventure and exitement she has only ever read in fairytales.

When she strays from the path to Granny's house, she happens across a Cockney Wolf (Malcolm McDowell). Should she trust this magical new 'friend' or run while she still can?...

A charming entry in the series. Steenburgen and McDowell (married in real life at the time) have a marvelous time with the script. Frances Bay is delightful as Grandmother and the episode also features Darrell Larsen.

5 out of 5 stars Faerie Tale Theatre on DVD.......2004-09-18

After years of waiting, Faerie Tale Theatre fans can finally own the series on DVD. Shelley Duvall's series originally appeared on Showtime 20 years ago and featured well-known and rising stars of the time. The series' enthusiastic interpretations of beloved fairy tales has made it a cult classic. Better yet, the DVD prices are affordable, especially after the high prices the used VHS copies have been earning in recent years.

About this episode:

Here's the classic story of a young girl who meets a big, bad wolf on her way to Grandmother's house. Should she stop and visit or hurry away from this intriguing stranger?

5 out of 5 stars wonderful fairytales.......2006-12-17

My 6 year old son loves eveything fairytale, and these movies are his favorite. These particular fairytales are not dark and scary like Disney can sometimes be. We have all of these fairytales and will continue to buy them as new ones come out.

1 out of 5 stars Possibly the worst movie I've ever seen........2007-03-01

When I say this is possibly the worst movie I've ever seen, I mean MOVIE, not just horror flick. I rented it with a friend of mine based on the cover, and we regretted it completely. I actually had Blockbuster refund me my money for it.

Anyway, the story is about a girl named Jenny, who is twelve years old, has thick, ugly eyebrows, and thinks she is the judge and executor of mankind. Rich and abandoned by her mother in Rome, she has unlimited money, and wants to keep it this way. Deranged and confused, she has a twisted sense of morality in which she hunts and kills those who perform things she deems unjust, with the help of her silent and presumably imaginary friend, George.

For example, she witnesses a woman steal a bottle of wine -- she inconspicuously approaches the woman and asks for her name and other information, under the guise of "I'm an American student doing a report." Then, later she and her friend George find the woman in a subway station and kill her, chopping off her hands, and exuding justice on her.

This sounds like it might be a good way to present a film, but it fails horribly. The acting by the girl Jenny is terrible. Not only is it bad acting, but she throws in a cheesy "evil grin," every time she gets a new idea on how to murder someone. The grin alone was enough to make me want to slaughter the director for making this film, in my own sense of justice.

Anyway, things get a little crazy when Jenny falls for her tutor and tries to seduce him (remember, she's only 12), and her grandmother arrives to take custody of her and take her back to America.

The bottom line - Jenny finds people she doesn't like, then kills them. There's not much depth, the acting is subpar (except for the grandmother, who is decent), and by the thirty minute mark you'll be ready to trade it in for something with Bruce Campbell.

My suggestion -- toss this one aside. This one is so bad, you can't even laugh at it's silliness. A total waste of time. Pass.

1 out of 5 stars SHUT UP.......2007-02-13

And that's what you'll wish this girl would do. She constantly chatters and chatters and chatters.....

Terrible movie, terrible acting, terrible story. You'll have more fun watching paint dry.

1 out of 5 stars Spoiled brats win again........2006-09-18

The story in a nutshell;

A spoiled brat genius rich girl gets her kicks by stalking the streets of Rome 'punishing sinners'.

This is the worst kind of horror flick - a spoiled brat who kills just for fun. What's worse, she never pays for what she's done.

Watch this one only if you like seeing bratty children get their way.

1 out of 5 stars promised so much, delivered nothing.......2006-05-08

well, i suppose i can't justly declare that, seeing as how i didn't make it past the first, say, 20 minutes.

the girl, even as far as B horror is concerned, was terrible.

and if you can't pronounce Quixote right, you shouldn't be in films.

1 out of 5 stars I honestly puked!.......2006-05-06

not cause it's gory or anything but for some reaosn this movie made me VOMIT.. the music was obnoxious and nauseating and the movie just kinda made my head hurt..

of course I was severely ill before I watched it but ten minutes into it I was praying to old flushable!

Might have been good but I couldnt' make it far!

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!.......2007-01-19

We love the Scholastic Video Collections!! Our first collection included the story "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom". My two year old son doesn't ask to watch a movie or television. He asks for "Boom Boom"! He especially loves the stories that are put to music or song.

The Scholastic Video Collection is a series that every household with babies, toddlers and preschool age children should have. They are good, clean, educational fun.
