This is avery good and typical job of all Tom Selick's movies. He is one of the best. Could have done without the sex scenes. Would have made it an even better movie.

I had seen this before. It wasn't as good the second time around. I do whoever like Tom Selleck. The second time around seemed to move slow.

I'm a big fan of Robert B. Parker's Jesse Stone series (5 novels so far) and was curious to see how Tom Selleck would fare in the lead role of Stone Cold. Going into this television movie, I had some doubts because Selleck didn't really mesh with the mental image I had of Jesse. To me, the great thing about Jesse Stone had always been the fact that he was this unassuming, average-looking guy with unsuspected balls of steel, and I thought Tom Selleck, with his commanding presence (and trademark mustache), would take that bit of magic away from Jesse. But I guess I worried for nothing. Tom Selleck turns out to be excellent as the savvy, complex, and stoic police chief of Paradise, Massachusetts. The author had always depicted Jesse as a flawed human being, still struggling with his inner demons, namely his obsession with his ex-wife (who keeps calling him), which then ties into his drinking problem. Yet, somehow, Jesse still finds the strength somewhere to do the right thing, even if it means circumventing certain rules and policies here and there. Tom Selleck brings all of Jesse's baggage to the screen with an effectively low-key but layered performance. Even though his character is a man of few words, Selleck still manages to convey the deep emotions being kept in check underneath the police chief's poker-faced demeanor. Jesse also ends up with the driest, funniest one-liners in the movie, most of 'em lifted straight off the pages of the book.

Stone Cold, if you follow the continuity of the book series, is actually the fourth installment. The plot of Stone Cold, really quickly, goes like this: The quiet, tiny town of Paradise, Massachusetts suddenly becomes the site of a slew of random killings, with all the victims executed in the same way. Ex-Los Angeles cop and now Paradise Chief of Police Jesse Stone and his tiny, inexperienced police force must ferret out the serial killer(s) and simultaneously deal with a high school rape case. The stakes are raised even more when the thrill-seeking killers begin to target people close to Jesse.

Those expecting a shoot-em-up police show will be disappointed. This is a contemplative film that takes its time and goes thru its paces to tell its story. And it's a good story. Its tone is somber and melancholy, influenced not a little by our lead character's world-weary disposition and aided by camera shots of chilly, gloomy New England scenery. This movie, though having its share of suspenseful moments, is most definitely character driven, and the cast does a good job of fleshing out their roles, which is a good thing, because there are more Jesse Stone tv movies planned. I'm eagerly anticipating the dvd releases of Night Passage and also of Death in Paradise. Stone Cold, by the way, offers an 11-minute-long "Beneath the Surface of Stone Cold" featurette. But that's it for special features.

I recommend this movie, which is a well-acted, quiet little thriller. Jesse Stone is a complicated person who has that feel of "realness" to him. Things aren't clear cut in his world; in fact, his personal life is pretty much in shambles - just witness his constant drinking, his unresolved issues with his cheating ex-wife Jenn, and his "we're-pals-who-have-sex" relationship with town lawyer Abby Taylor (Polly Shannon). But a sweet relationship to savor is Jesse's friendship with young Candace Pennington (Alexis Dziena), as well as his mentoring of eager, fresh-faced copper Suitcase Simpson (Kohl Sudduth). Tom Selleck shows his commitment to Jesse Stone by not only starring in the movie but also by executive producing Stone Cold, as well as the ensuing Jesse Stone movies. And, if you like the movie, but haven't yet read the Jesse Stone books, then you're missing out, especially with the excellent first novel Night Passage. That Robert B. Parker, he sure can write. So give him a try. And don't even get me started on his awesome Spenser books.

One of the Great Black Comedies.......2007-06-21

This work doesn't need much explaination. It is a true classic black comedy. It uses humaor to show how ludicrous and easily corrupted our governments truly are. It simultaneously shines a homorous and frightening light on nuclear war. In my opinion, this is well worth your time. And if you are interested in nuclear war, World War III or end times works, I highly recommend the book Mysteries of the Universe... it is shocking, controversial and frightening! This movie offers the best tongue and cheek commentary on the absurdities of war. I am sure this movie has been heavily "borrowed" from by Hollywood. The "Survival Kit Content Check" scene reminded me alot about the more recent "duct tape your windows" survival tactics. If you believe that the end of the world will come in a flash of light, this movie will validate you.

Then you my friend need to sit down and watch Dr. Strangelove or How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. This entertaining and educational(dare I say edutaining?) film shows you what would really happen if a United States Air Force Commander ignored the requirement for Presidential authorization and simply attacked the Soviet Union on his own initiative. All the safeguards that are put in place to prevent such an action come crashing down and conspire against those racing to prevent nuclear armageddon.

See fighting in the war room! Learn about the big board! Find out the truth about fluoride! See the dedication of US military servicemen in the face of illogical orders and impossible odds! Discover the secret of Dr. Strangelove!

Mostly Perfect Trade.......2007-05-18

Dr. Strangelove is a kick to watch if the style suits you. Littered with black humor and satire dated to the early cold war days, this movie will provide as much comedy as it will history.

Do not expect the flashy humor in todays comedies but a more subtle poke at the dark aspects of society and humanity.

The only problem I had with any aspect of the purchase was a small crack in the clear protective plastic which protects the cover.

A good buy for movie know-it-alls and aficionados.

Deceiving product info for a great action flick........2007-06-15

OK, this is a review of the DVD. I've already reviewed this fantastic biker flick elsewhere on this site and you fans deserve to know what you are paying for so read this before you rush out and buy this crappy DVD release.

First of all, the DVD clearly states that is presents a Widescreeen and Fullscreen version. But then if you look further into the specs listed, it also says the DVD is being presented in 1:33:1 which is a sneaky way of saying 4:3 or as we most understand that to be.....FULLSCREEN!

This DVD is a flipper, and on the unmarked side you get what appears to be a fullscreen presentation. Now, flip it over to the side that is actually marked "Widescreen" and you will get NOT a widescreen version, but a fullscreen version that has been cropped at the top and the bottom so as to give the false appearance of being widescreen. But as you watch, you will notice that key images in certain scenes are only 1/2 visible. It became obvious when I got the tape measure out to confirm what I already suspected....cropped top and bottom. Shame shame shame.

The sound gets no props either. Again the specs tell you that this is a Dolby Surround audio, but it doesn't sound like it. All the sound is to the front, and mostly directed to the center channel. My impression is that this is basically a "stereo" mixing that does nothing to enhance the action. The sound you hear in the surround speakers is just residual noise, not much else. You'll have to listen to this one at full volume for effect.

On the plus side, the DVD transfer is very crisp and clean. The images are sharp, and the colors are very deep. I'm shocked actually at the clarity of detail for such a lousy DVD treatment, but the video looks great. Nothing else in the package, no extras, no liner notes, no bios, nada. So there you go, buy this DVD because you love the movie, but don't buy it expecting to be blown away by it cause you likely wont be unless you're seeing it for the first time. 5 stars for the movie minus one pitiful star for this DVD.

Inane biker flick.......2007-06-15

Bad acting, overused storyline-Brian Bosworth plays a cop who infiltrates a sadistic biker gang to bring them to justice. Senseless to the point of annoying.

You've got a clean-up on Aisle Four.......2007-06-12

I'm like everyone else who is thrilled this B-movie masterpiece is finally getting the DVD treatment. Some of the acting is forgettable, some of the story lines are cliche - but the action is generally non-stop, everything explodes, and Henricksen and Forsythe are on top of their games. The State Capitol of Arkansas was "rented out" for the final scene, on Bill Clinton's watch! Fantastic! Thanks to the fansite (google stonecoldmovie) for letting me know this day is coming!

John Stone Bussiness of Joe Huff Bussiness?.......2007-06-06

This movie is one of my all time favorite movies. I am always showing my friends lesser know movies and this one along with Thursday featuring Thomas Jane and Mickey Rourke and Cold Blooded featuring Jason Priestly (yeah the 90210 guy) directed by Michael J. Fox are always my biggest hits. This is a must own for sure. "Crack the whip".

Before Harrison Ford assumed the mantle of playing Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan hero in Patriot Games, Alec Baldwin took a swing at the character in this John McTiernan film and hit one to the fence. If less instantly sympathetic than Ford, Baldwin is in some respects more interesting and nuanced as Ryan, and drawing comparisons between both actors' performances can make for some interesting postmovie discussion. The film (and costar-coproducer Kevin Costner) drew criticism for fictionally enhancing the White House role of presidential aide Kenneth O'Donnell, but while Costner's Boston accent may be grating, his fine performance as O'Donnell offers expert witness to the crisis, its nerve-wracking escalation, and the efforts of John F. Kennedy (Bruce Greenwood) and Robert F. Kennedy (Steven Culp) to negotiate a peaceful settlement with Russia. While Soviet missiles approach operational status in Cuba, director Roger Donaldson (who directed Costner in No Way Out) cuts to exciting U.S. Navy flights over the missile site, ramping up the tension that history itself provided. Donaldson's occasional use of black and white is self-consciously distracting, and he's further guilty of allowing a shrillness (along with repetitive, ominous shots of nuclear explosions) to invade the urgency of David Self's screenplay. Still, as Hollywood history lessons go, Thirteen Days is riveting stuff. In an epic (but dramatically tenuous) case of absence making hearts grow fonder, Inman endures a treacherous hike fraught with danger (and populated by supporting players including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman, and others) while the struggling, inexperienced Ada is aided by the high-spirited Ruby (Renée Zellweger), forming a powerful farming partnership that transforms Ada into a strong, lovelorn survivor. The film's episodic structure slightly weakens its emotional impact, and it's fairly obvious that director Anthony Minghella is striving to repeat the prestigious romanticism of his Oscar®-winning hit The English Patient. For the most part it works, especially in the dynamic performances of Zellweger and Kidman, and the explosive 1864 battle of Petersburg, Virginia, is recreated with violent, percussive intensity. Those who admired Frazier's novel may regret some of the changes made in Minghella's adaptation (the ending is particularly altered), but Cold Mountain remains a high-class example of grand, old-fashioned filmmaking, boosted by star power of the highest order. --Jeff Shannon

Two reliable genres--submarine adventure and the threat of World War III--come together in director (and co-writer) Samuel Fuller's Hell and High Water, a 1954 film that remains surprisingly relevant more than half a century later. When an enormous nuclear explosion is traced to somewhere between the tip of northern Japan and the Arctic Circle, followed by the disappearance of a prominent French atomic scientist (Victor Francen), it's clear that something's up. Did the prof defect to the dark (actually, the Red) side? Was he abducted? As it turns out, he's actually part of a group of scientists, businessmen, and other distinguished gentlemen planning to send a sub to check out the scene and determine the extent of the threat. Enter Capt. Adam Jones (the redoubtable Richard Widmark), who agrees to helm the private, very secret mission for a hefty cash reward; enter also the professor's "assistant" (Bella Darvi), herself a skilled scientist who goes along for the ride, thereby quickening the pulse of every able-bodied sailor on board the sub, especially the captain's.

Hell and High Water was filmed in Technicolor and CinemaScope, as studios tried to induce audiences to abandon their TVs in favor of movie theaters; it also earned an Oscar nomination for its special effects, and considering the relatively primitive state of that art at the time, they're not bad. Fuller does a nice job of depicting the cramped, funky confines of our heroes' craft, a vessel of dubious seaworthiness captured from the Japanese during World War II. The plot, involving the Chinese's dastardly plan to incite a nuclear conflagration and blame the U.S., is preposterous; yet if you substitute North Korea or Iran for China, the notion of a rogue nation with atomic capabilities is no less timely now than then. Fuller largely avoids political flag-waving; his main point lies in a speech delivered (more than once) by the French professor: "Each man has his own reason for living… and his own price for dying." Extras include an interesting biography of Widmark from the A&E show of that same name. --Sam Graham
