In 1930 Grant Wood won a painting competition with his masterpiece, American Gothic. Although it's considered to be a visual satire on rural American Life, perhaps the story goes deeper than canvas. In this provocative horror tale by accliamed photographer, Carlos Batts, we see a different interpretation of a rural American Family on the 75th Anniversary of Wood's painting, American Gothic. Batts paints his own story and invites us into a world where the old farmer struggles with his crime of passion, the consequences and his iconic fate. A pcture may be worth a 1,000 words, but this painting's story will leave you speechless.
Running Time 322 Mins.

Ultra Dark.......2007-06-23
This was a brilliant, dark, and disturbing series. While as a fan I was very disappointed this show only lasted one season. From an objective perspective I'm surprised it actually ever saw the light of day at all, on CBS no less. That to me shows just good this controversial show was. Gary Cole as always was fantastic as the malevolent Sheriff Lucas Buck. I expect no less from him. The surprise to me was the acting of a young Lucas Black. He brought a depth and range to character Caleb Temple. He could ably portray Caleb as just a normal kid, enjoying the activities any 10 year old would enjoy. Also the intense melancholy to a boy that has so much inner pain and turmoil for the loss of sister Merlyn. When young Lucas Black has to act dark, he becomes one scary young lad. I wonder why he hasn't had more prominent acting roles nowadays. It is not often I am impressed with child actors, but his performance really left a mark on me, even a decade later. This was one of my all time favorite TV shows.
So why only three stars for a five star series? Well as others have stated DVD compilation was horribly mishandled. What with the episodes out of order. The source material wasn't remastered in anyway. That is unforgivable in this high def world we now live in. Also double-sided discs are the worst. I had no problems with any kind of skipping or freezing, as is commonplace with some double-sided DVDs. But it shows to me how Universal cut costs any way they could in bringing this series to DVD.
Do not let those drawbacks dissuade you from checking out a groundbreaking, excellent series. If you, the potential customer, can look past these flaws, I guarantee you this will be a show that will stick in your mind long after you are done viewing.
How could they get these episodes out of order?.......2007-05-27
American Gothic is a fantastic timeless mysterious series. I am very happy to find it available on DVD. However, how on earth could these disks have been put together is such a sloppy manner? The episodes are out of order. I surely recommended boxed set this because it is the only way you will get the series, but do not watch the progams in the order on the three disks. If you read a few of the other reviews you will find the correct order. Love Gary Cole in this role!
AMERICAN GOTHIC ROCKED !!!.......2007-05-14
Fantastic cast... from Gary Cole to Lucas Black & everyone in between. Too bad Shawn Cassidy didn't pitch this series to HBO instead of the networks... it might have actually gotten its run for the money. The series was moved around... episodes shown out of order.... sometimes pre-empted for weeks at a time... even the loyalist of fans had trouble finding it from week to week (especially since it aired back in those pre-Tivo days). It's also sad that when it finally made it to DVD they did the same hatchet job on the episode order as the network did when it first ran the series. Thanks to everyone out there who gave us lists showing the correct order to view the episodes even if it does mean going from disk to disk/side to side just to see them in the correct sequence. As for quality... the picture is sometimes grainy & the scene endings where commercial breaks were to be inserted are painfully obvious... but having said all that... and even though you can catch it right now on the Chiller network if you have DirecTV like we do... it was fun to do a weekend marathon of the entire series in the correct episode order & without commercial interuptions.
For me it was well worth the buy... but of course the series ended too soon and you're left wanting more... after all... the battle for Caleb's soul was just getting interesting....
American Gothic = a fun creative series.......2007-05-09
Blink and you could have missed it as a series from network television but fortunately for those who love story telling with a supernatural bend American Gothic is back as a ongoing series on Chiller as well as this DVD series. Complete and fun the DVD set doesn't disappoint. And now the cult following for Sheriff Lucas Buck can always be assured that this Andy of Mayberry from another dimension and his little town and inhabitants are as close as your DVD player.
Good vs Evil.......2007-04-01
American Gothic, was one of televisions most interesting and original broadcasts in many, many years. The show takes place in South Carolina, in a town called Trinity. The name Trinity says it all. it is a constant struggle between good and evil. Lucas Black, who plays that character of a little boy is so adorable. His southern accent is to die for. What a remarkable cast as well. This horror/drama/thriller is an excellent way to take a look at the real world and see what is really going on under the facaud of our perception of what is good and what is evil and what is real and what is imagined. Amercian Gothic takes you on a trip of self exploration and soul searching. This show really makes you question yourself and your values.

Excellent chiller.......2007-06-21
I don't understand the poor reviews of this great chiller from the 70's.
This is one of the premier macabre/occult movies to come out of this era.
Lots of original plots and ideas not found in any other movies. Who could
have expected the swimming pool death or the thing in the room on life
support? This movie lacks nothing. It is well written with great
actors. This is back in the days when the story and the music and your
own imagination were at their maximum use and the carefully aimed special
effects were so much more believable as a result.
Unless you've been desensitized by too many of the newer slash &
blood/underlying porn movies for the prozac nation with the 5 minute
attention span you will really like this movie.
Not really a horror movie, just a chiller.......2007-04-13
And yet one more movie from my childhood has found it's way into my collection. To be fair I knew this one wasn't a great movie even then, but it did have the "creepy" factor that works well even today. A few deaths and a lot of "strange things" happen and that's it. But the thought that at any moment something might happen keeps you guessing.
After a very strange wreck Ms. Ross and Mr. Elliott(A real life couple) are taken to a Estate run by some very strange people. The owner is about to die and they along with the other visitors are in line for the title prize.
The rest is for you to find out on your own. This is a slow moving movie and it has very little if any gore. This is one that sets out to make you feel creepy and to that end I felt it did the job nicely.
House Party..........2006-10-31
In THE LEGACY, real life spouses Katharine Ross (The Stepford Wives) and Sam Elliot (Frogs) are a young couple lured to England by an employment opportunity. Upon arrival, they get into a motorcycle accident and are taken to a huge mansion while their bike is supposedly being fixed. Strange things start happening almost immediately! Sam's character is almost boiled alive in the shower! If that's not bad enough, a group of mysterious visitors show up and begin to die off in ghastly ways! Roger Daltry (The Who's lead singer), plays Clive. He's on screen for about 3 minutes before going croakers. The rest is Ross and Elliot trying to figure out what's really going on. I've always liked the ending to this one. It's in the same vein as ROSEMARY'S BABY, THE SENTINEL, BURNT OFFERINGS, and THE STEPFORD WIVES (the original version, NOT that abysmal remake). Enjoy...
More of a Who Dunnit than a Horror Film........2006-01-09
I remember when this film came out in the theater when I was a kid. I never saw it in the theater but I watched it several times on VHS. I enjoyed this film greatly. It is one of my favorites. Elliot and Ross have great chemistry. The ending was solid, and left room for a sequel but I have not heard of one, unless it was released on Beta Max like the fabled Sentinel Sequel. I am a big fan of horror movies from this error where story was more important than gore and dazzle. I give this movie a solid 4 stars it is one of my favorites. Almost forgot about this one. But it may be too slow for everyone.
Boring.......2005-12-31
I bought this movie after reading the rave reviews on this site. I have to say I was highly disappointed. Although the 2 main characters are very likeable and their acting is good, the disco-type music in this so-called scary movie was just annoying. I also found the 'love-scene type' music very inappropriate. The type of music they used just made me hate the movie even more. I was hoping for a 'haunted house' theme in this movie and it just didn't deliver. I will give this movie 2 stars because I liked the 2 main characters. There are no gruesome murders or anything like that in this film.

Description
A group of yuppies charter a plane for a camping getaway, only to find themselves making an emergency landing on an isolated island. They are taken in for the night by the only inhabitants, the rapidly-religious "Ma & Pa", who seem trapped in a Rockwellian time-warp. This proves to be every bit as unpleasant as it seems.

That Old Time Religion..........2006-12-10
I watched this one expecting a goofy movie about inbreds or hellish hillbillies on the loose. I figured it would stink, but was hoping for laughs. Well, AMERICAN GOTHIC surprised me! The group of young people, while fairly dumb, were not as annoying as most such human prey. Yvonne De Carlo (yep, Lilly Munster) and Rod Steiger (Ammityville Horror) were great as Ma and Pa, the strange pair of hyper-religious 1920s throw-backs who terrorize the young'uns. We are also introduced to the pair's twisted brood of homicidal offspring! There's a nice ending too, w/ a scorched-earth approach! Watch Sarah Torgov emerge as the evil family's worst nightmare! She's a blast! Highly recommended...
Not Bad..........2006-09-17
"American Gothic" is one of those horror films that is smart (but could've been better) and runs head on into horror film cliches, while making them original. The movie is about a few couples; One who has recently lost their baby. They decide to get in a small, one engine plane and fly to an island. After suffering some problems, they make an emergency landing on a different island that appears to be deserted. We, the audience, know of course that it's not. We know that something is there waiting for them. After discovering a house with an odd 1920's look to it...They notice, but aren't really suspicious. We are already thinking "You people better get out of there." After the people own the house come home, they get in way over their heads. The people are Ma and Pa (Rod Steiger & Yvonne De Carlo), two religious freaks with slight tempers. They invite the couples to stay for a while and introduce their kids. They have three children that all appear to be between 30 and 50; The kicker is, they dress and talk like children...Oh, and they have a habit of killing off their houseguests. All the death scenes you see coming and you just to think to yourself "My God, that character is stupid."
But the atmosphere and mood to the film is what's creepy; The gore is actually pretty toned down. The movie has a twist towards the end involving one of the women who crash landed; It's pretty unexpected and is a well played scenario. Horror buffs, I think, will appreciate the way the film's done. Overall, it has a cheap look to it and was probably released direct-to-video (but I'm not sure if it was); But the atmosphere and everything is enough to satisfy. Steiger and De Carlo are perfect as the sadistic Ma and Pa. If you want Texas Chainsaw Massacre, go rent that. If you want creepy, check this out.
GRADE: B
A CLASSIC THRILLER/HORROR FILM!!.......2006-07-18
American Gothic features camp performances by both Rod Steiger and Yvonne Decarlo.
This movie is like an older version of House of 1000 Corpses.
Long before Rob Zombie made House of 1000 Corpses...this obscure classic was around!!
If you like the old Addams Family series...you should love this movie!!
Not exactly the "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"........2006-07-03
After seeing the overhyped "American Gothic", I must say that I came away disappointed. What you have here is a movie that was constructed in the mold of the original "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" where you have some unsuspecting people coming up on a crazed homicidal family. Unfortunately, the family really comes off looking goofy and silly more than dangerous and deadly. I would certainly rather come upon Ma and Pa's family than Leatherface and his family if you know what I mean. "American Gothic" does a decent job of painting a crazy family portrait for sure, but Ma, Pa and company just do not exactly strike fear in the viewer's heart...they just are not that formidable as far as their prowess as horror movie villains. The kills are not too bad, but certainly are not anything to write home about. The acting is okay and production values are not too bad for a movie of this nature. I just did not like the way that Ma and Pa's family came across to the viewer...they come across more weird than horrifying, more eccentric than anything else and not exactly dangerous. Don't get me wrong...obviously, they killed some people, but I was not convinced in the manner in which this was done or in the family's disposition as brutal killers. Also, I felt that the ending was rather weak and very predictable. I guess they just do not make them like they used to anymore. In short, the way I look at "American Gothic" is that if the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is a FIVE STARS horror movie, then this movie, comparatively speaking, is certainly worth no more than ONE STAR...it is what it is folks!
UNDERRATED LATE 80'S GEM ! Ya look'n fa goosebumps?Watch this flick!.......2006-02-11
John Hough's 'AMERICAN GOTHIC' is a brilliant little creep-fest & one of my childhood favorites. To me this is truly one of the most underrated horror films of all time. Between the excellent camera work/directing,a thick storyline & some above average to excellent acting(for the genre)to a couple of goulish kills & most importantly the incredibly creepy atmosphere! as a horror fan there isn't much not to like about this classic. Horror fans i found this dvd version for chump change & although it doesn't have anything more than a menu the actual picture quality & sound was pretty damn good. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves a good disturbing scare!

ADDICTED TO BLOOD.......2006-01-16
One has to give credit for this movie's plot: vampirism is a viral infection, and once infected, one becomes bloodthirsty. However, the execution of the film doesn't really do anything with its plot. Andrew Stevens (THE FURY) stars as Owen Urban, a brilliant young maverick scientist who is working on creating powerful enzymes. Christopher Plummer is an infected scientific genius who runs a powerful company and he wants Stevens to help him find an antidote for the vampiric virus. Kim Coates is swarthy as always as a particularly gruesome vampire, who can't quite satiate his thirst. And then comes Heather Thomas (remember her from THE FALL GUY?), a sexy volunteer at the lab who finds herself infected when an inmate bites her leg. Thomas' performance as the infected titular character turns into a slutty bloodthirsty vixen and her performance is sooo bad, it's hilarious. Plummer should be ashamed of himself for doing this role. The movie also suffers from a very weak ending with no real resolution. Filmed in 1990, this loser spawned a 1997 sequel, but don't let that convince you this one's a winner.

Description
American Gothic.
Customer Reviews:
ABSTRACT FILM BASED ON REALISTIC PAINTING.......2005-11-14
I think Grant Wood's painting "American Gothic" created in 1930 is a great piece of art (not only American but in a world's scale). Having read the synopsis for this movie I thought it'd be something really interesting. I guess I was wrong. First you got to understand it's not quite a movie. It's more like a collage of photos and images put on industrial and death metal music. The movie is surreal and abstract unlike the painting itself. I doubt it's possible to understand anything watching it. Maybe some will be exclaiming "Ingenious! Brilliant!" after the film but then they have to be big connoisseurs of post-modernistic art. Carlos Batts is an acclaimed photographer, photography is his first speciality and I somehow missed it before buying this DVD. I think this film would be a nice part of some contemporary art exhibition, among some weird statues and installations. But to pay $23 for watching it at home - no, that's too much, and I'm talking not just about the money.
Don't say you haven't been warned :)
