Superbly adapted and directed by Tim Robbins from the nonfiction book of the same name by Sister Helen Prejean, this spiritually enlightened drama is too intelligent to traffic in polemics or self-righteous pontifications against the death penalty. But in examining the issue of capital punishment from a humanitarian perspective, the film urges thoughtful reflection on the justifications for legally ending a human life. Although it features a fine supporting cast, the film maintains its sharp focus through flawless lead performances by Oscar-winner Susan Sarandon as the Catholic nun Prejean, and Sean Penn as the death-row killer she struggles to save. Robbins avoids a biased message, letting the movie examine both sides of the issue instead (R. Lee Ermey gives a fine performance as the grief-stricken father of one of Penn's victims). As the drama unfolds and Penn's execution deadline grows near, Dead Man Walking is graced by compelling depths of theme and character, achieving an emotional impact that demands further reflection and removes the stigma of piousness from socially conscious filmmaking. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars "In Louisiana life means life!".......2007-05-14

Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon have distinguished themselves as two of the best actors of their generation. And in this movie, they both seemed to do it at the same time in the same scenes. This film had the courage to explore issues within issues with guts. For example: Who grieves for the victimizers family? After this triumph why Tim Robbins doesn't direct more often is a mystery. Without a doubt Dead Man Walking is absolutely one of the best cinematic collaborations ever made. BRAVO!

4 out of 5 stars Well done.......2007-04-14

"Dead Man Walking" deals with one nun's struggle to help a convicted death row inmate come to terms with his imminent execution. Writer-director Tim Robbins does something very difficult in this film, he makes us care about the unsympathetic character that Penn plays. Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn dominate the film in every aspect imaginable, they play a complicated chess match at times and eventually become close friends by the end of the picture. The fact that Sarandon and Robbins are openly against the death penalty in real life just adds to this film. Their strong opinion on the subject leads to an unforgettable motion picture that is made well and performed well by the two leads. Of course, no film is 100% unbiased, especially when it comes to such serious issues as these, but I liked it. Features one of the most chilling and realistic scenes of an execution ever to be captured on celluloid. Based on the book by Helen Prejean (the real-life nun, who appears briefly outside the prison during a candlelight vigil scene).

This film affirmed my postition on the death penalty. It is unequaly applied. People without money are often convicted wrongly. Read the book by Sr. Prejean. pax, robbie

Former WWE & WCW World Champion Bill Goldberg and hip-hop group Tha Dog Pound's Ricardo "Kurupt" Brown push life to the limit in this explosive sequel to the 2002 hit movie Half Past Dead.

Burk (Goldberg) and Twitch (Kurupt), are two inmates serving time at Craton Prison, a notoriously tough and violent penitentiary ruled by rival gangs. When a riot breaks out and the prison goes into lockdown, the two must form an unlikely alliance to stay alive. Together, they navigate the hostile gang territory under the watchful eye of unsympathetic prison guards, in order to learn the identity of the inmate responsible for the riot. Eventually Burk discovers that gang leader, Cortez, is behind the riot and find that he's taken two hostages: Cherise, Twitch's fiancee and Ellie, Burk's daughter. Twitch and Burk find they must work together in order to save their loved ones and bring Cortez down.

2 out of 5 stars Half Past Dead. Cup Half Empty........2007-05-30

There was a time when Hollywood only made sequel's to movies that were good in the first place and actually warranted a follow up. Now, with the ever increasing direct-to-video market near critical mass with once action giants Seagal / Van Damme / Lundgren lugging it out on a digital landscape - it seems that all bets are off and any movie can have its own spin off or franchise potential. Forget the original's quality - let's just do a follow up, film it quickly and get some studio to release it!

Which brings us to `Half Past Dead 2'. Where the original `Half Past Dead' had an amusingly awkward title that always raised a smile and filled its by-the-numbers running time with a sweaty lookin' Steven Seagal hooking up with a bevvy of rappers to protect Alcatraz from Morris Chestnut and his "Matrix-lite" team breaking in. It was hardly an oscar calibre production and easily ranked as a forerunner to where Seagal's mindset is regarding his recent video output. However, why let that little problem stop producer Andrew (yeah, he starred in Munchie!) Stevens from bankrolling a sequel and dumping it on an unsuspecting action video hungry public?

However, on this occasion - Stevens couldn't convince the Lord Seagal to return in orange jumpsuit/buddy rapper duties (he was obviously eyeing up another The Foreigner sequel) and had to find a replacement to fill the shoes of a non-acting hard man type. Well, there's plenty out there but lucky for him - step up Bill Goldberg. He, of WCW fame and Van Damme rival in dull sequel `Universal Soldier: The Return' turns up in the main lead role and although he looks the part in his wife beater and jeans, hardly injects his character with anything like, er . . . you know, character. Its like watching a piece of meat in a vest hitting people in the head with the odd expletive thrown in for good measure. You almost get the impression that the producers are dangling dollar bills infront of the camera prompting him to move from scene to scene. Granted, he looks the part - but, unfortunately the part is beyond him. Quite the opposite has to be said of Kurrupt - who delivers a bright and breezy performance and actually pushes the movie along. Without him, the movie would be devoid of any atmosphere whatsoever and thank goodness he returns from the original. Kudos too to Angell Conwell, who plays Kurrupts love interest - she brings a sassy attitude to the movies' more duller moments.

I won't bore you with the story (there isn't really one to speak of), except it features the usual assortment of prison fighting cliches, overlong riot sequences, dumb prison guards/wardens and the always classic canteen bust up! You can almost tick off the cliches rolled out, so keep a pen and paper handy.

Tony Plana also returns from the first movie in an extended cameo, and this kind of continuation is where this sequel succeeds to a certain point. Its good to have actual characters from a previous instalment turn up in this day and age and actually helps this movie. All-in-all, not the best movie around, but certainly not the worst. The cast are generally good (Goldberg needs a little more coaching in the acting department, but his physical presence is impressive and you believe he could seriously cause some damage) and Art Camacho directs what is obviously a low budget with a strong, assured hand. The picture quality isn't the best though, and most of the darker scenes lose some "dramatic" quality.

Its on par with most other direct-to-video releases of late, except it actually features a better cast and nicely handled fisticuffs. For a movie that doesn't need a sequel, this movie has turned out better than expected. However, that's hardly a recommendation... maybe worth renting before you buy.

3 out of 5 stars Plot.......2007-04-25

WWE and WCW star Bill Goldberg brings his brawn from the ring to the screen in this sequel to the 2002 film HALF PAST DEAD. Joined by rapper Kurupt of Tha Dog Pound, Goldberg plays Burk, an inmate at a prison that brings new meaning to the phrase "maximum security." A riot erupts among the violent offenders, and Burk is forced to unite with fellow prisoner Twitch (Kurupt) in order to survive. They learn that Twitch's fiancée and Burke's daughter have been taken hostage by the man to blame for the riot, cementing their alliance as they try to take him down.

Dead Leaves is the latest installment in the collaboration between Manga Entertainment and Production I.G. that brought viewers Blood: The Last Vampire (2001) and Kai Doh Maru (2003). But Dead Leaves, which suggests a mixture of Ninja Scroll and Inspector Zim designed by Peter Chung, lacks the sensual elegance of the earlier OVAs. Retro, who has a television set for a head, and Pandy awaken with their memories erased. Sent to the lunar prison of Dead Leaves, they contrive an escape with hordes of other inmates. A long, pointless slaughter ensues, with blood, bullets, and body parts flying across the screen. The frame is so cluttered with angular characters, bright colors, Japanese and English words, mechanical devices, and gore, it's difficult to follow the frenetic action, let alone the fragmentary story. (Unrated, suitable for ages 17 and older: brief nudity, extensive violence, profanity, sexual humor, toilet humor, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Greatest dialog ever. You know the actors were dying to read their lines.

5 out of 5 stars Tank Girl meets Fooly Cooly !!!.......2006-07-06

this anime blew me away! the main characters pandy and retro remind me of tank girl and booga. the pace and energy level of the story are reminisent of the anime Fooly Cooly, but much more anarchic and intense, plus the humorous parts are great! Dead Leaves is not like your standard anime but for people willing to expand their perceptions of what Anime can be,I would say give this anime a try and be prepared to hang on tight!!

3 out of 5 stars EVER WONDER WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF SAM PECKINPAH DIRECTED AN ANIMATED FEATURE?.......2006-07-04

Well, this is as close as you're going to get to it. DEAD LEAVES is truly the child of the Tarantino/Bruckheimer era, with Tarantino's violence and Bruckheimer's "Let's blow up something" attitude. At only an hour, there's no room for character development, which means no attempt at John Woo's action mixed with an understanding of the characters. They are what they are - characters who shoot, kill, blow stuff up, then move on to the next scene of carnage.
I gave it three stars for the style - thick black lines and a dynamic mix of colors. It's a good "park your brain at the door" film, but "Howl's Moving Castle" it ain't. Obviously, the director wants you watch it, then turn on Metallica, down a six pack of Budweiser, then crush the cans against your head. Don't see it with a girl unless you want HER movie pick next time be "The Devil Wears Prada".

2 out of 5 stars Migraine inducing gore fest........2006-01-31

I kept thinking the animation style of the credits and first few scenes was just some temporary effect that would fade to a more traditional style, but no - it stayed that way through the whole "ride." There are a few jokes, a few situations that induced a chuckle, but for the most part this is just an excuse to show dozens upon dozens of "characters" killed, maimed, mutilated, and pulverized in the most horrible of ways possible in the short hour or so that this lasts. Add in the toilet humor, the sodomy "gags" (one inmate has a powerful drill for his "equipment") and the shear volume of bloodletting and you have what amounts to a basically pointless romp. They try to insert a point and a story with a unique poem that the two heros can barely remember as they are suffering from amnesia, but in the end nothing is really resolved - and you are left wondering what the point was. Would have given it a one, but I have to admit, it made me laugh a couple of times.

4 out of 5 stars Visual Madness.......2006-01-18

Dead Leaves was one of those anime that I was iffy about from the moment I saw it on the movie shelf. Looking at the case, it doesn't exactly look like anime, the characters look strange, and the movie itself, as is the wont of Manga, was short. Luckily, it was inexpensive. The store I bought it from had a sale on Manga titles and I picked this up, along with R.O.D. and Kai Doh Maru. After watching all of them, I considered myself lucking, being two for three (see my review for Kai Doh Maru).

To explain, I watched Dead Leaves last and was already jaded because of Kai Doh Maru. I was prepared to be disappointed when I popped it in. And, after the initial confusing moments of this anime, I was expecting it. But then came the action, a fiesta of explosions and a**kicking. The two main characters, Pandy, named for the tattoo over her eye, and Retro, named for the TV he uses for a face, are masters of destruction, and prove that in the initial scene of action where they almost completely destroy a city all on their own. Eventually, though, they are captured and imprisoned, and the action moves aside for some pretty suggestive comedy. Strange sex and nudity fill the next twenty minutes or so, until Pandy and Retro finally decide to make their escape, and once again, in comes the action.

The story is confusing and hard to explain, so I'll paraphrase the back of the DVD: Character wake up with no memory and no clothes, characters go on crime spree, characters are captured, characters discover the secrets of the prison known as Dead Leaves, characters decide death and destruction is the best way to deal with the secrets. I've written it the way I did because, well, the story is unimportant. Top notch animation from Production I.G. is what drives this anime, from start to finish.

And I'm thankful to Dead Leaves for one reason: it took the taste out of my mouth left behind by Kai Doh Maru.

The one problem I had with this anime was the length. I'm getting tired of spending so much money on something that doesn't even go past an hour. I wish it was at least ten minutes longer, making it a full hour and therefore a movie.

That, however, is no reason not to own Dead Leaves, especially if you enjoy quality animation. In many ways, this anime is similar to FLCL and Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi in that both of these anime use a certain amount of chaos in their animation style. Dead Leaves, however, goes beyond that. It's visual madness, and one I'd recommend to hardcore fans of anime.

if you can get this movie for under $3.00 do it, otherwise leave it be. youd be better off to sit in front of your tv with it off for 80-something minutes.

not even really a zombie movie. there are i guess what you would call zombies, but they dont eat any one. everyone knows that zombies are hungry for flesh. it looks like the movie was made in about a week on one set. theres a tease of seeing some erotica, but then your let down hard.

unless your a stoner and can sit and watch bad movies, just for watching bad movies, steer clear of this one.

1 out of 5 stars DEATH ROW.......2004-04-02

Poorly done zombie flick that never scares up any scares, and has some preposterous gaps in credibility and editing. Where in the world did the blood come from that brought the executioners back? Why was the most despicable character in the movie the only one who survived? What was this thing about Bill being hired to beat up Christoph? Huh?....no one in the cast can be accused of acting; you may recognize Samuel Page from "The Brotherhood", but the rest of the cast is pretty unknown and will probably stay that way.
Directors should also realize by now that watching zombies move slow mo in their death walks is about as exciting as (one of the characters in this movie says: An episode of Baywatch Nights).
Ho hum.

5 out of 5 stars Death Penalty.......2007-04-11

This film affirmed my postition on the death penalty. It is unequaly applied. People without money are often convicted wrongly. Read the book by Sr. Prejean. pax, robbie

The movie was suspenseful. The reason I purchased the movie was for a project at school. I very much enjoyed the movie and would recommend it to others.

Very good movie. Great acting & plot. Very touching. I am very glad I own this movie. I will watch it very often.

2 out of 5 stars Pure Cheez Whiz.......2006-11-18

I really think that this was made INTENTIONALLY bad! It must fall under the category of "so bad its good." A title bestowed upon classic B movie cheesey ragu sauce like "Plan 9 From Outer Space." Ok so this is no Plan 9 but anything with zombies and Tony todd in the same sentence should be at least DECENT?? NOT SO! Despite having the usually good Tony Todd (Candyman, Night of the living dead remake ) and Tony Leung ( martial arts stunman to Bruce Lee and expert martial arts master hissdamnself ) this is pretty terrible. It is more of an exploitation horror flick, a very cheesy one at that, that has plenty of girl on girl sex and gore. The acting is terrible, and even the stunts are pretty low rate. This is surprising since Tony Leung is a master of the form. The budget they had making this must have been next to nothing. Besides some cool lesbian soft core and a few deent kicks and punches, this is the worst horror movie I've seen in awhile! It incorporates zombies into the already really corny mix of occult and soft core porn. I think this had zombies solely because of Tony Todd, a "zombie flick" alumnus. Better than "Day of the Dead 2" but will this go down in the annals of a "Candyman" or "Night of the Living Dead?" Uhhhh, no! the placement of zombies is just a ploy to get Romero fans and general fans of horror to watch this. It comes off more as reason to touch oneself with ya frat buddies! Really bad and only if you MUST go so low at least absorb the cheese factor for all its worth.

1 out of 5 stars Crappy horror film is also a crappy women-in-prison film!.......2006-06-02

How could director Derek Wan have possibly screwed this one up?

I mean, yes, it was almost certainly going to be campy, mixing in zombies with pretty girls behind bars, but campy is supposed to be fun, isn't it? This movie is NOT fun. It's stupid and uninteresting.

Margaret Baker was very well cast as a predatory lesbian guard who sets her sights on pretty female inmates like Misty Mundae and Ruby Larocca. But aside from some brief conversation, nothing ever happens! There's not one halfway decent girls-molesting-other-girls scene in this entire film! Obviously the decision was made to get right to the stupid zombies instead.

What a disappointing dud!

1 out of 5 stars Completely redundant........2006-05-06

One would think that Fangoria editor Michael Gingold would have seen enough crappy horror movies to know when he was contributing to the problem, but Shadow: Dead Riot stands as testament to the opposite. It's a good thing that a healthy fraction of the horror fan population seems to relish any movie with bare breasts, gore, and heavy metal tunes, because those are the only people who will give this picture's investors a return on their money.

Skip this flick and go with one of the half-dozen GOOD zombie movies released in the last ten years: 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead, something else besides this.

3 out of 5 stars Sciamachy.......2006-04-14

There are shelves full of horror films superior to this one. It is not even in the same category as 28 Days Later, for example, and barely allowable on a list including the low budget 2000 Maniacs. That said, Shadow: Dead Riot nevertheless is better than one might expect. It has a watchable mix of mayhem, sleaze, and dark humor. If much of the cast seems plucked off a Jerry Springer Show, this is appropriate for the inmates of the run-down women's prison in which nearly the entire action takes place. Carla Greene makes her rough-edged character Solitaire sympathetic enough to build suspense when she is put in danger. Most horror fans will find this movie sufficiently entertaining.

1 out of 5 stars Tony Todd, womens prison, zombies...what's not to like?.......2006-04-08

Well, you'd think this had the makings of a cult classic ala "Manos" or "Plan 9"...they've even advertised martial arts. How can you go wrong with all these elements? Oh yeah, don't write any type of script, get the worst actors you can possibly find (even Tony's horrible in this) and shoot the whole mess on video. This movie is so awful it can't even be enjoyed in that "Mystery Science Theater 3000" way.
"Shadow: Dead Riot" is, hand's down, the worst movie I've seen in a decade. Stay very far away from this. I'd give it a zero rating if allowed.
