Description
Meet Slash, a rock band on the edge of fame, fortune and now death itself. At the moment, they're on the road to nowhere playing dingy clubs and smelly venues. But when the lead singer is called home for a family funeral, the band begins a helter-skelter spiral into madness. It could have been done better........2007-01-03
The video is ok, the audio is not that good. If you want to crank some G N R play a cd.
The only official "original" gunners concert we'll get to see.......2006-06-08
My review is for the entire Use Your Illusion concert (both UYI I and II DVDs). I'm yet another massive Guns n' Roses fan. I have been for many years. I'm 24 now but back when the UYI tours were on, my parents wouldn't let a 9 year old go to their concert, especially given the lyrical content of many of their songs. Needless to say that when I saw this DVD of the concert featuring the "original" gunners, I had extremely high expectations. This was to be an up-close and personal view of the gunners doing what they do best (rock on!!) and we all know that we'll never see Axl teamed with Duff, Slash, Matt and Gilby again.
Before I bought this DVD I read almost all the other reviews of this concert on amazon. I instantly decided to take the plunge and buy both discs and see for myself what I thought. I agree with many comments made by fellow reviewers and disagree with many others, however I'd also like to add my own views.
Pros
* As stated earlier, this is my only chance to see a real gunners concert raw and uncut featuring the "original" lineup. (When I say "original" I'm refering to the lineup before Axl's new arrangement. Personally I prefer Izzy Stradlin as a rhythm guitarist to Gilby Clark.)
* The track selection is superp! While you can never please everyone I'd say that no critical songs were missed. Personal favourites of mine not performed include Don't Damn Me, Think About You and Coma.
* As expected, the band is amazing. Slash's solos are exceptional, both Gilby and Matt provide a great rhythm section and Duff provides the killer bass. I personally like the second half of Move to the City with the jazz section and the piano/Dizzy Reed's keyboards. I also love the raw rocking tunes. Double Talkin' Jive is amazing.
Cons
* No special features, ie bonus interviews (other than the footage at the start showing the band backstage).
* The sound quality could have been a bit better. I agree with other reviewers when they can't see why a concert from 1992 can't be remastered in Dolby 5.1.
* Axl's voice is so unpredictable (he was hit and miss with many of the notes, ie Sweet Child O' Mine, You Could Be Mine). Even back then Axl's voice appears to be severly strained (sometimes he sounds like he has razor blades stuck in his throat).
* Other reviewers complain that the band lacked energy and the crowd was rather flat. While I'd say that the band seemed pretty energised to me, I'd love to know why out of all the concerts they could have chosen to record, they picked Tokyo (where the locals are pretty passive by nature).
All in all I'd say that the concert is very, very good but the DVD production could have been better. I would gladly have paid top dollar to be at that concert.
Finally, to all the people complaining that the concert was sold on 2 seperate DVD's, think of it this way, I spent $60 ($30 each disc) for a concert I can enjoy over and over again. Sounds like pretty good value to me.
Strong Performance (4.5).......2006-03-31
Contrary to several of these reviews, I personally think this is a great Live DVD of Guns n' Roses, offering a very solid performance on their Illusion World Tour. Far superior to the Illusion 2 DVD, this shows GNR playing classic "Appetite" songs with great rock fierce, as well as doing several cuts from Illusion albums and rocking out in all of them.
The show kicks off with an electrifying performance of "Nightrain", and the band is on the mark, with good lyrical deliveries from Axl and a good solo. "Live And Let Die" is also an excellent performance with the band in good sound. "Mr. Brownstone" and "It's So Easy" are heavy Appetite tracks performed with great intensity, the latter being the better of the 2 performances. Axl gives an awesome delivery for "It's So Easy" at the end. I consider "Bad Obsession" to be the worst performance on here, but it is okay. Duff McKagan pioneers "Attitude" giving the vocals. "Pretty Tied Up" has some great moments with Slash shining on the guitar, and Dizzy Reed's background piano sounding perfect in this song. It drags on too long though. Gilby Clarke (Izzy Stradlin's replacement for the remaineder of the tour) and Slash perform "Wild Horses" by Rolling Stones. "Double Talkin' Jive" is pure fiery rock, with the whole band jamming for a good minute before gearing into the track. "Don't Cry" is a very nice performance, with the transition from Slash's guitar to Axl's voice sounding sensational. "Civil War" is one of the heaviest performances in the set and the guitar riffs are exceptional. "Patience" is definitely one of my favourite performances on here, and was probably Axl's best performance of the night. "November Rain" closes out very well, and Axl begins it with a 3 minute piano impromptu.
Overall, this is in my opinion a very solid performance from the band, however simply would not appeal to casual fans of GNR. This is specifically for diehards only. You really have to appreciate the pure raspiness of Axl's voice and the ugly playing of the group to enjoy this DVD. Recommended to big fans of the group.
Recorded in '92 using '29 technology.......2005-10-08
OK, I am definitely a GNR fan. But Geez, this is cheesy. I can look past the Nigel Tufnel Shorts with the "armadillos in our trousers" look. I'm totally impressed with the Richard Simmons-esque running about the stage that Axl Does - I'd be pretty damned out of breath too if I tried it. Too bad I'd be forgetting my primary job, which would be singing. I can look past all of that. It's a great set list, great setting. It's even filmed pretty decently, with camera men and an editor who don't need Ritalin. Overall, I think the band puts on a pretty damn good performance.
My biggest gripe is the sound. It sounds like an audience recording. Worse, it sounds like someone recorded it from a nearby high rise (Tokyo has a lot of those) on their chicklet-sized cell phone. After about eight transfers, it made it onto DVD. Come on, the only soundtrack is Dolby Stereo? From 1992? Gimme a break! I have The Who, Black Sabbath, and Marshall Tucker DVDs from a decade and a half before that are in 5.1. This DVD had me checking all my wiring and the power to my subwoofer to see if everything was OK. Wanna know what the sound on this DVD is like? Go wear a pair of earmuffs and sit in your car and listen to the audio CD.
I guess for 9 bucks I can't complain TOO much. It's just SO frustrating considering how good and enjoyable this could have been were it recorded properly.
Could have been a little better, but not bad.......2005-09-22
I was very glad to see a Guns N' Roses concert DVD come out. We all know how GN'R have been left in ruins, and it is always nice when an old band releases DVDS of them in concerts. This is a direct transfer from an original VHS tape that was released in 1992,and the producer of this DVD did a pretty good job at transferring the original VHS performance to DVD.
The DVD itself? Could have been a little better, but not bad. A little dull at times, but the good parts are really good. There are no bonus interviews on this DVD,but you do see an introduction that is behind the scenes before the actual concert starts and a couple behind the scenes looks after a performance. Good work there. The performances of "Nightrain","Mr. Brownstone",a cover of the Paul McCartney/Wings classic "Live and Let Die","Attitude"(a Misfits cover),and "Patience" are a little bit boring, but performances of songs like "It's So Easy","Welcome To The Jungle","Don't Cry","Double Talkin' Jive","Pretty Tied Up","November Rain",and "Civil War" are all really good good performances. Axl Rose shows off his talent as a showman during the performances of "It's So Easy" and "Civil War",and "Double Talkin' Jive" leading into "Civil War" sounds(as well as looks) just plain awesome. Don't expect the crowd in this DVD to keep up the excitement during performances of songs on here(some of which are on Guns N' Roses' "Live Era" record),and while this DVD would have been better if the crowd acted excited, the DVD itself is still alright. Don't expect to see "Sweet Child O' Mine","You Could Be Mine",etc. performed live, but a DVD that shows Guns N' Roses supporting UYI2 in Japan was also released,so buying that DVD along with this one would be a good supplement to this DVD(and both of them are sort of Guns N' Roses greatest hits--hits and fan favorites--live and in concert on a DVD). The best thing about this DVD is that even though the special feautures do pop up right after a performance of a song before you see the next song that is performed, you can go to the menu, click on the song selection, and then pick the performance of the song that comes up right after the performance of the last song you saw,and then you don't have all that much to complain about. An improvement from the original VHS release that came out in 1992.
Become a die hard Guns N' Roses fan before you purchase this DVD,but despite it's faults, this is a decent DVD. I recommend getting it cheap and used, but except for the weak parts of this DVD,this is a good purchase for die hard Guns N' Roses fans.

Product Description
At 6pm on April 20th, 1992, Roger Taylor, Brian May and John Deacon, the surviving members of Queen, took to the stage of London's legendary Wembley Stadium to announce the start of one of the biggest events in rock history, organised by Queen themselves to pay tribute to their former colleague - the incomparable Freddie Mercury. The atmosphere of emotion, mixed with joy and sadness, shared by stadium audience, worldwide television viewers, and performers alike, was an experience that will never be forgotten
Queen had invited some of the greatest musical talent in the world to join them in paying tribute to Freddie, who tragically died of AIDS on the 24th of November, 1991. The aim of the concert was to celebrate Freddie's life and work, but also to increasepublic awareness of the awful disease which prematurely ended his life. A bonus result was a huge and still growing sum of money raised by the event and its spin-offs which has provided funds to help fight AIDS worldwide ever since. All the guest artists offered their participation for free. The concert was broadcast live on television and radio to 76 countries, from the USA to Russia, and all proceeds, then and now, go to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, a charity formed at that time whose charter is the relief of suffering from AIDS throughout the world.
The 72,000 people who were fortunate enough to see the concert live did so in glorious Spring weather in front of a stage 370 ft wide by 90 feet deep. The Stage was flanked by scaffolding towers over 80 ft tall, and crowned at the centre of the proscenium arch by a giant Phoenix - a symbol from Queen's crest designed by Freddie in 1969, and now the emblem of the Mercury Phoenix Trust.
It is a lasting tribute to be shared by all. Profits from this DVD will be donated by the Mercury Phoenix Trust to AIDS charities; thank you for buying it.

COMPLETELY DISAPPOINTING!.......2007-05-27
If I could give it a "0" stars I would. They cut all the best performances out of this DVD from the original airing. ESPECIALLY the amazing Extreme Medley...as well as Def Leppard performing "Now I'm Here" with Brian May (which was ironic as they showed Joe Elliott and Brian May in the cover booklet.
I wish I could get my money back.
Freddie Mercury is alive.......2007-03-24
Great DVD. If you are a Queen's fan, must add this show to your collection.
A great tribute to a Great Man.......2007-03-09
Freddie, as I've mentioned in my "Queen+Paul Rodgers" review was/is absolutely irreplaceable. Although there are several members of bands that I've been in that I wouldn't have missed at ALL, should THEY have taken a dirt bath, Brian May, John Deacon, & Roger Taylor are to be commended for quelling their grief at Freddie's loss. And, believe me, the magnitude of Freddie's loss is sadly, brazenly displayed here, "other" performers "doing" Freddie's part. In the "oh, be serious" category, a couple of members of "Guns 'n Roses" display how poorly they play/sing, and...well, my Mama always told me, "if you can't say anything nice about somebody, don't say anything at all" - so I won't mention Elton John or George Michael. And although I have quibbled about David Bowie of late ("Americans Scare Me?"), he is definitely THE STAR here: on "Under Pressure," he duets with the great Annie Lenox, late of Eurhythmics (I don't know how to spell it and it's a stupid name!), and she is great, although that black makeup around her eyes is very distracting from her beauty. Then Bowie reminisces about the music scene, late sixties/early seventies, and brings out Ian Hunter & Mick Ronson of Mott The Hoople. They, with Queen, perform an effervescent "All The Young Dudes." Finally, Hunter leaves, and Bowie/Ronson/Queen perform an almost tender version of "Heroes," a song from Bowie's "lost in the wilderness days." But what happens next is so shocking that it - alone - justifies the price of the DVD: Bowie drops to one knee and prays The Lord's Prayer. And I'm grateful that we get to see Mick Ronson (who, by all rights, SHOULD have gotten R Wood's job when Mick Taylor left the Stones in 1974) perform his last concert. He's suffering from the cancer that would kill him just over a year later, but, by his performance here, you'd never know it. These are MY interpretations of the Tribute Concert Film. For more information about "whose performance was not included," refer to all the other reviewers - and remember that I DIDN'T say "justifiably," either.
Pure Entertainment and music superstars.......2007-03-08
It's an original aproach to Queen Music from the point of view of many top artists. I enjoyed the full concert and the A&E Music special with backstages and some cool stuff. If you are a Queen or Freddye's fan, this DVD must be in your hands.
Gotta love Queen.......2007-01-15
First purchased on Laser Disk. Had to modernize. Was very happy to see it available. If you love Queen, you'll love this. The numerous performers did an excellent job singing Mercury's songs. A very respectable tribute.

Great purchase along with the Use Your Illusion I DVD.......2007-06-21
This is a good DVD if you are into something beyond just performances of songs you're familiar with. Where UYI I DVD was mostly performances of some of the best songs of Appetite for Destruction and Use Your Illusion I, on this DVD you get a more personal look at each of the band members and they (everyone from Dizzy Reed and Gilby Clark to Slash and Duff)showcase their individual talents. Most DVDs tend to cut past these parts, which tend to be the most enjoyable part of such concerts.
While there weren't any songs I simply didn't like, I'll admit I fast forwarded through the drum solo until Duff and Slash came on stage. Matt Sorom is an OK drummer, but I've definitely seen and heard better solos than his, which went way too long. Highlights for me are Theme from The Godfather, which I actually wasn't familiar with but it was really well done, So Fine (it was great hearing Duff sing together with Axl on this slower song), Rocket Queen (interesting "rap" a la Axl in the middle), Knockin on Heaven's Door, and Estranged (really a beautiful performance of one of GNR's best songs).
Some people complain about the crowd, but for those familiar with concerts in Japan, this crowd is pretty typical. They're not rowdy like the crowds at American and European shows; the best way to describe them is "polite." It didn't really bother me and I thought the band did a great job keeping up the energy and show Tokyo a great time.
I won't complain about Axl's voice because what can you expect when he's screaming his heart out for nearly an hour and a half?? Of coarse he's going to sound a bit hoarse here and there. As for the rest of the band, I thought they sounded even better than on CD.
The only thing things missing from the DVD are bonus features such as more behind the scenes clips of the band, interviews, etc. Also, the sound quality is basically just like what you'd hear on a VHS.
Ritz in NY 1988 is the only thing worth having.......2006-06-15
why why WHY dont they release something from the 80's? totally bogus. I turned this thing off 1/3 thru it, Axl running all over the place in his little shorts, talking /shouting the words like Mick Jagger in concert, lame. is the last 2/3's worth it? like is said in here, I dont know, sold it the day after I watched it. how can it be? how can the show get better with Axl running all over in those shorts? no way.
WARNING - this is only half of the concert- but what a half it is.......2005-12-25
This is hard to belive, but this DVD is only for the second half of the concert - the first half is the Use Your Illusion 1 DVD.
That bizare fact aside, this is a beatiful concert.
The band are on form, and look like they're making an effort i.e. they're not completely wasted (probably because the concert was being recorded for 2 seperate videos).
The solos are great, especially Matt's, being accompanied by (an unusually sober) Duff Rose on timpani.
Slash delights with his legendary guitar skills - I especially liked the Sweet Child guitar solo, which was played to perfection, and had this massive superdome rocking in unison.
I also liked the performance of Move to the City, which includes great little funky instrumentals, including Ted on organ, Dizzy on piano, and the 3 piece horn section.
There is also, of course, a very rare performance of Estranged, which is a very special treat indeed.
At the interval before the encore, you can see the delight on peoples faces, and feel the electricity in the arena, which reminds you (not that you need reminding) that you are watching a band of mythic proportion, performing a stunning concert.
Even better than the UYI1 Concert DVD.......2005-10-12
The Guns N' Roses DVD that shows GN'R live in Tokyo in 1992,supporting their "Use Your Illusion II" record,is a great DVD,and it is even better than the UYI1 concert DVD. This is a transfer from an original VHS tape, the transfer doesn't look sloppy here, and the first time I saw this concert,it was even better than I thought it would be.
The DVD and the concert themselves? Both are not perfect, but both are very solid. After you get a behind the scenes look at Guns N' Roses backstage, the show opens with "You Could Be Mine",and this DVD shows GN'R performing songs off of AFD,Lies,UYI1,and UYI2,along with the theme from Francis Ford Coppala's hit film "The Godfather" and a drum solo from Matt Sorum,a guitar solo from Slash, and a timpani solo from Duff McKagan. Sorum's solo,Slash's solo, and McKagan's solo are all amazing,as well as GN'R's cover version of "The Godfather" theme. The audience in this DVD(same audience in the UYI1 concert DVD)actually act excited here and keep this concert/DVD exciting and entertaining, unlike the UYI1 concert DVD,which was good but didn't show a very enthusiastic audience.
The rest of this DVD(past "You Could Be Mine",the drum and guitar solo, and "The Godfather" theme)is pretty much a well planned supplemnet to the UYI1 concert DVD--this DVD/concert feautures live performances of songs that were NOT on the UYI1 concert DVD,and while you won't see "Welcome To The Jungle" or "November Rain" performed live here, you can get the UYI1 concert DVD for both of those things(you have to give the setlist on both the UYI1 concert DVD and the UYI2 concert DVD a lot of credit, since there is not overkill of live performances of AFD songs and since the DVDS have live performances of songs that one of the two DVDS didn't,as well as the fact that a DVD for a UYI1 concert and a UYI2 concert were both released). The jazzed up versions of Guns N' Roses' cover version of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" and the original GN'R tune "Move To The City" are both awesome and the highlights of this DVD,while Axl Rose and Duff McKagan do a nice duet of "So Fine",a jazz influenced song off of UYI2 that McKagan wrote as a tribute for Johnny Thunders. Even though drugs, alcohol, arrogance, and big egos had already been going on in Guns N' Roses for a while when the concert on this DVD was filmed, you can watch this concert and tell that everybody who was in GN'R(Axl,Slash,Duff,Matt,Dizzy Reed, and Gilby Clarke)when this concert was filmed were having a good time onstage.
As for the question of special feautures here, there are no bonus interviews,BUT,besides the one "bonus" thing I already mentioned at the top of this review,a Japanese TV interview with Slash that was conducted around the time this concert was shot do appear a couple of times,so you can't go wrong with either one of those things(if you don't want the
"bonus feautures" right before and/or during the concert on this DVD,you can go to the menu and select an actual song, unlike you could with the original VHS tape). An improvement from the original VHS tape of this concert.
If you are a die hard Guns N' Roses fan, this DVD is a must buy. If you are a new or casual GN'R fan, then you should become a die hard GN'R fan before you purchase this DVD,but what you have here is a great concert on a great DVD,and now hopefully a Guns N'Roses DVD from the AFD era and/or the Lies era will be released on DVD(although you can get GNR's Ritz Show for Appetite off of Ebay, well, the last time I checked at least).

I LOVE YOU MICHAEL, FOREVER..........2006-02-25
ANY REAL FAN OF MICHAEL'S SHOULD OWN THIS. YOU WON'T REGRET IT. I PROMISE.
Slightly Disappointed, but i still love Michael.......2005-08-03
i was so exited to get this DVD, but i guess i didn't read the Amazon reviews carefully enough, because i didn't know that there wasnt a real video for Dangerous, but it was only the song with clips behind it. this dvd would be better if it wasnt consisted of so much clips, and tearful speeches by michael. it should have been more videos. real videos, not clips. it was still good. i really enjoyed "In the Closet". thats basically the highlight of the dvd. i'm just glad i didnt have to spend more than 11.43$ for this half-ass tape! hope this helps.
Outstanding.......2005-07-08
This set of videos is a must for any MJ fan, and is not likely to fail to impress those less familiar with his work with "Dangerous". This set of films contains some of his most high-energy and star-studded videos. Eddie Murphy and Naiomi Campbell are among those featured. Michael continues to amaze with innovative dance moves and technologically advanced effects, even by today's standards. Most videos are a feast for the eye, and Michael uses these videos to test the bounds of physical expression. My personal favorites from this set are Black or White, Give In To Me, Remember the time, and In The Closet. Give In To Me is an all-out rocking ballad featuring Slash as lead guitarist. MJ shows his versatility of being able to go from pop and R&B to rock, as he did previously on "Bad" with "Dirty Diana". "In The Closet" is a sensuous song that departs from the typical MJ video which features extravagant sets and background dancers. The video is simple, the only other person in it being Naomi Campbell, and Michael sports a more puerile appearance than in his other works. The way Michael dances and moves to the beat of this song is astounding. This was a powerful video. Pretty much all of us have seen Black or White, famous for the morphing scene at the end. This dvd allows you to see the full version, complete with the then controversial "panther" scene at the end, where Michael does some spectacular dancing in the middle of the street. Remember The Time is set in Ancient Egypt. MJ is an entertainer for the Pharoah (Eddie Murphy), but he ends up sweeping the Queen (Iman) off her feet. There is a very good dance scene complete with background dancers, and Michael shows off his one of a kind voice when he goes a capella during this dance set. At the end, when the Pharoah's guards are closing in on him, he does one of his signature spins and is reduced to a pile of dust, which the wind wisps away. Though those are my favorites from this set, all of the films are very well done, and the music of course is excellent. More than just a singer or songwriter, Michael is above all else a performer. Having done some of the biggest tours of all time, he can electrify an audience like none other. The concert footage on this dvd shows why whether you love him or hate him, when he takes over a stage, one cannot help but watch.
A great Michael Jackson compilation.......2005-04-28
This is a great Michael Jackson compilation and if you have the CD, you should definately go out and buy this too! It includes 11 of the best videos of all time, some of which are either very rare or unreleased. Only 4 of the 11 videos here were singles (including 2 versions of Heal The World), and 7 of them were from the album Dangerous but not released as singles, which makes this a treat for any MJ fans. The picture and sound quality for this DVD are amazing and indeed, Michael is a great performer and dancer in these videos!
What's not to like?! 2 versions of Heal The World, The full video for Black Or White, the great video for Remember The Time (one of my favourite Michael Jackson videos!), the version of Dangerous from the world tour, In The Closet which features Naomi Campbell plus more great videos!! The DVD also includes Discography and Behind The Scenes Footage!!! This will definately keep you entertained, especially if you are a MJ fan!
Bloated, overstylized videos with more money than soul........2005-01-07
Dangerous was the project on which Michael Jackson began to lose sight of reality -- not just physical, but artistic grasp of reality.
"Smooth Criminal" is in my estimation the last great video he'd made, but even on that classic, you can see two incongruous personae emerging in Jackson's music-video approach. The celebrated nightclub dance sequence is understandably considered a landmark in the art of music video, but if we jog our memory, we'd also remember there's a long, boring, glitzed-up, and utterly foolish sci-fi plot built up around that sequence. (Joe Pesci as a drug villain and Michael Jackson the giant robot, anybody?)
Well, on the videos from Dangerous, Jackson let his love of Steven Spielberg and fantasy filmmaking take over, and lost sight of the musician and performer. There are some moments in these videos that are entertaining and remind us of vintage Michael Jackson videos, but these moments are never the centerpiece. Eddie Murphy and "Magic" Johnson hamming it up delightfully in "Remember the Time", Naomi Campbell's sensuous writhe in "In the Closet", and the ripping hard-rock performance by Slash, Gilby Clarke and Muzz Skillings in "Give In to Me" are great -- but they are also always pushed to the back by other far less interesting elements. The worst part is, there isn't a single video on here that uses Jackson's greatest visual gift, which is dance. Not a single precision-choreographed dance sequence (as seen in "Beat It", "Smooth Criminal", "Thriller", "Bad"...) among these videos, just utter chaos with fifty people each doing something different in the muddled, cacophonous dance "scenes" in "Black or White", "Remember the Time" and "Jam". Was there even a choreographer? And did s/he actually work with the director to figure out the moves and angles? These videos pale alongside Janet Jackson's videos from Rhythm Nation: 1814, just a couple of years prior.
Jackson also seems to acquire a kind of visual ADD in these videos, pulling together elements that don't mesh at all. The intro to "Black or White", while amusing in a juvenile way, has nothing to do with the song; the special effects in "Remember the Time" look cheesy, and "Jam" is nothing but a bunch of amusing cameos (Heavy D, Michael Jordan, Kris Kross) and mashed-together shots with no method to the madness. And let's not forget that utterly moronic "panther" ending to "Black or White"...if the sequence actually had something to do with Jackson's message and the song, I believe the controversy over that segment might have been less pronounced. Looking at it over a decade later, this sequence remains what it seemed, gratuitous destruction and lewd, aimless, undisciplined dance moves aimed to shock, and with no narrative, musical or thematic context whatsoever.
The only self-contained and coherent videos here are "Who Is It" and "Give In to Me". The former, though opaque in its imagery, at least achieves stylistic unity, while the latter is a straight-ahead rock performance video. Poor editing spoiled its rock-out impact, though -- it makes you yearn for "Dirty Diana". And in the end, the only lasting moment of transcendence here, and the only piece up to the par of Jackson's Thriller and Bad videos, is the famous "morphing" sequence in "Black or White". It's visually attractive, fun, and helps get across the message of the song. Something most of these videos fail to do; it's little wonder that Jackson's later DVD collections tend to include very few of the Dangerous videos. They really are the nadir of his music-video oeuvre.
And after having bought four Michael Jackson music-video DVDs (not even counting the concert DVD that came with the Ultimate Collection boxed set, and my old VHS copies of Moonwalker and The Legend Continues), I'm compelled to slam those fascistic "Brace Yourself" intros that Jackson always slaps at the beginning of his video collections. Wagner-sized vocal chants, marching death squads, and hysterical masses? Who does that remind us of? That same megalomania, which makes Jackson constantly bombard us with messages of how great he is, is what had eventually sunk his music and videos to such pathetic levels as we've seen in the last 10 years. He never rediscovered the joy of music as we'd heard on Off the Wall and Thriller, and with the way his career is going now, it's not likely we ever will again.

As Carole King herself puts it during this concert performance in Hartford, Connecticut, the tunes on this video will represent either a trip down memory lane for the viewer--or a music-history lesson. King includes a couple of unfamiliar songs (from her then-new 1993 album, Colour of Your Dreams), but devotes most of this 85-minute set to the hits and highlights of her career, with a large, energetic band and backup singers (including her daughter). Those include such early song-writing successes as "One Fine Day," "Up on the Roof," and "Natural Woman," as well as the still-classic tunes from her ground-breaking Tapestry album: "So Far Away," "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?", "It's Too Late," and "You've Got a Friend." King herself is frisky as a pony, working the stage with the flair of Tina Turner and even bringing out unlikely guest-star guitarist Slash to provide chunky, chugging guitar on "Locomotion." --Marshall Fine

Shes still got it.............2007-04-14
Just rented this movie, was curious to see her live, my sister is a huge fan. I liked this DVD, not only did she still look great back then, her voice hasnt changed that much from the 70s. I was surprised to see Slash in this show, (strange pairing) but he does rock the house with his blistering solos. Love the oldies more than the new stuff but thats me...great show even though its over 10 years old.
Carole King A National Treasure.......2006-08-13
There is something special about watching this concert and watching Carole King perform songs many of which are the soundtrack of my life. As I was growing up the songs she wrote with Gerry Goffin were all over the radio. She puts everything she has into the performance and there are no gimicks, it's all about the music. Incredible energy yet Carole never seems to break a sweat. I'm in awe of her songwriting ability, how she can create words and music that can lift you up or get right to your soul. She does it all so modestly and with such class. I would say this 1994 concert shows Carole at the top of her form but then I haven't seen her in concert lately! Just think of it 1994 was 23 years after her mega LP Tapestry and 34 years after she started writing songs. She nails every note in the music with ease!
I would have liked it better if she had talked a little more about the music or whatever but that's just me. It's a great concert and a welcome addition to my video library.
devine.......2005-09-13
This CD was great! It featured many of Carole King's greatest songs. My only negative comment would be that it didn't include ALL of Ms. King's hits from Tapestry. For example if you are a fan of "Way Over Yonder", you won't find it on this DVD. However, all fans of Carole King's should find that this DVD is very enjoyable.
Carole King At Her Best!!.......2005-03-20
I've been a Carole King fan since the 60's. Finally I bought this DVD and my only complaint is that it is not longer.
Carole is in fine form, singing most of her hits which form just a small part of her compositions. Her performance generates an enthusiasm that is contagious. The orchestra is in top form.
I can't wait for another performance by Carole to come out!
The Queen of Rock & Roll.......2004-10-20
Be ready for nearly two hours of fun that's full of energy. This event was a well produced PBS fund raiser. Fortunately on DVD and 5.1 surround sound (as opposed to the initial broadcast) the viewer becomes one of the audience for a true legend of the 1960's & 70's and is still pouring her heart into every lyric and note thus delivering it like a fine aged wine....

This 1991 documentary explores the ever-likable ghoul-rocker's history in the music biz, from the early days when Alice Cooper was, in fact, the name of a pretty good band (whose members are all unfortunately spoken of, even analyzed, here in past tense, as if they're all dead) to Cooper's elder- statesman status by the time this production was underway. Along the way, we see too-brief clips from more than 20 videos, all interrupted for reflections by manager Shep Gordon, producer Bob Ezrin, Slash, Ozzy, and the man-of-the-hour himself. The most welcome elements here are selections from the original band, including "I'm Eighteen," "Billion Dollar Babies," and "Black Ju Ju." Solo material--"Only Women Bleed," "How You Gonna See Me Now"--is an interesting reminder of Cooper's somewhat altered direction by the late 1970s. Rounding things out is the real story behind that infamous urban legend about Cooper and a chicken. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
excellent history and tidbits about Alice.......2007-06-14
This is a great DVD that shows a lot of footage never before seen, with excellent interviews as well. The original Cooper band was the best, and to find out more info than from any other source all for this price, you'll be in love!! Quality DVD and quick shipping!
A Good Product That Could Have Been Better.......2006-11-03
This 2 disc set includes some priceless interviews with Alice, all the original band members, his manager and producer, etc. It does in fact cover the history of Alice.
The disc game and jukebox are mostly a recycling of the videos and soundbytes from the documentary. Its good and has some vintage footage in it to be sure.
Prime Cuts & Extra Helpings.......2006-09-29
I finally recieved my copy of this today. First, the price from Amazon was right. I got my copy for $18(no pun intended)and yes, it is worth it. Most record stores will charge upward of $25.00 for this. The first disc is pretty much the same as the VHS version except with better picture quality and camera angles. There is a cool story about Bruce Springsteen and Alice drinking together, although brief is not on the VHS version.
The second disc is lot more in depth than the VHS featuring interviews with Dennis Dunaway, Mike Bruce, Neal Smith and Dick Wagner.
The comments made by other reviewers about the game are true but if you just keep rolling those dice you eventually get to see the whole thing. The second disc also does feature full-length performances of many Alice Classics most performed with Kane Roberts on guitar.Kane plays the Alice tunes with lots of Steve Vai/Joe Satriani style embellishments. Lots of tapping and dive bombs and even ocasional nods to Yngwie. It took a second to get used to but actually is pretty cool.
The best parts have to be Dennis, Mike and Neal talking about the early days. This is truly a must-have for anyone who has been along time devoted fan. The casual fan may be bored with it as most of the interviews are assuming you already know certain things about the band which the casual fan probably doesn't.
I was definitely pleased with this and pleasantly surprised at how good it is.
The original and best DVD version of this great documentary, with, believe it or not, good picture quality!.......2006-05-10
*** THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE SINGLE-DISC 1998 DVD VERSION (with Alice wrapped in foil with a flower in his hair on the cover), NOT THE 2-DISC "SPECIAL EDITION" 2001 VERSION ***
ALICE COOPER: PRIME CUTS, a comprehensive visual biography of the rock legend, would have to be the best introduction and summary on Alice Cooper that one can buy. And for fans, this version is the better one to buy over the "Special Edition" 2-DVD release's version as it has much better picture quality, being presented in its original 4:3 full-screen picture format! (but this one doesn't come with the Special Edition's extra DVD, which is suited for hard-core fans only)
THE DOCUMENTARY...
This informative and entertaining programme covers Alice Cooper's career from the early psychedelic days of the late 60's through the early-to-mid 70's heyday to his commercially successful comeback in 1989.
It has a strong varied selection of songs culled from live footage, rare TV show appearances, and recording studio footage, in between interviews of Alice (circa 1990/1991) as he talks through his amazing history, of what "the character" Alice Cooper is and how it came about, of his band mates, and of the songs presented, plus some great rock stories that you'd expect from a rock legend, including being a 'Hollywood Vampire' alongside John Lennon and Keith Moon. Also includes interviews with producer Bob Ezrin and long-time manager Shep Gordon, and kudos from Ozzy Osbourne and Slash.
My only criticisms are that the documentary ignores the majority of Alice in the 80's (of material he released during this commercially-lull period for him that many consider either bizarre, terrible or brilliant material, and of his 2nd more severe hospitalization in 1983 for alcoholism, he's been sober ever since), and that many of the songs featured are only excerpts, not full-length versions. However the excerpts are excusable as Prime Cuts touches on so much within the space of 87 minutes, I think they did a damn good job.
PICTURE QUALITY...
This 1998 US DVD release of Prime Cuts, the first DVD release of the video, is presented in its original 4:3 full-screen format, thus having superior picture quality over the flawed "Special Edition" 2-DVD re-release of 2001 which is presented in 'anamorphic-widescreen' (to make full-screen vision into a 'fake' widescreen they cut away the top and bottom of the 4:3 vision to make it 16:9, thereby making the vision look close-up and squashed, and in this case pixelated due to a bad digital transfer job. in my opinion, anamorphic-widescreen is an awful practice of the video industry, worse than 'pan-&-scan'). So if you already have the Special Edition version and you're let down by its bad picture quality then this is the DVD to get! Otherwise, some archive performance footage does look slightly degraded, given the age of most of it, but it's all watchable and very enjoyable.
DVD EXTRAS...
No extras with this release, just a simple stereo transfer plus song menu, which is a pity as it would've been a great opportunity to include full versions of songs which were just featured as excerpts in the programme.
BONUS...
This US version of the documentary does include an extra few minutes of footage, not included in any other country's version except Japan, of Alice talking about his heavy metal resurgence from the mid-80's with the help of Kane Roberts and Kip Winger with brief footage of the Freedom video clip!
THE VERDICT...
5 stars for an awesome documentary, with nice picture quality, but minus 1 star for being such a no-frills release with no extras. So 4 stars for Alice Cooper: Prime Cuts - a perfect place to start for any novice or curious bystander of Alice, and a must for all Cooper fans and any hard rock music fans!
I must have a bad copy of this DVD. No one else seems to mention the horrid video quality........2005-12-27
Is it possible that I have a crappy copy of this DVD of Alice Cooper's Prime Cuts, or is everyone just looking past this eyesore of video quality?
I could imagine maybe a few poor videos of the earlier songs, but even the later videos ("Poison", "Het Stupid", etc.) look just as crappy as the rest of the DVD. Even the dialogue of Alice and other people involved with Alice Cooper talking between the songs is of horrid video quality.
Yes, I'm convinced now. My DVD of this Alice Cooper collection just has to be horribly defective. Because, there is no way every else can seem to tolerate this collection so favorably and disconcerned, if they are watching what I am watching. This DVD has to go back.

Customer Reviews:
Great if you are stoned or drunk........2007-06-15
This comedy flick has a few moments of humor, but for the most part you have to be a fan raunch-humor in order to like it. There's a alot of dumb comedy skits, but for the most part if you don't like bum fights, nepolean dynamite, or jackass type humor. you are not going to like this. So buyer beware. See if someone you know is into this stuff and talk them into buying it, then you watch it with them and if you hate it, you are not out any money.
The Worst movie EVER........2006-09-28
This movie is so terrible. I like some movies that are extremely low-budget and that aren't considered by most to be funny or otherwise good, but I couldn't even get through a half hour of this garbage. Some people have said that they got ONE laugh out of it, but I couldn't find anything even remotely funny about this film, if you could even call it that. It claims to be "offensive", but the movie is so dumb that anyone who could see it as such would likely disregard any lack of tact as mere stupidity. Don't even rent this...take your 3 bucks and buy a couple of those $1 movies from Wal-Mart. I promise you they'll be better than this.
Don't Waste Your Time and Money on This.......2006-05-01
This movie is just not funny. It's not shocking, edgy, or offensive. It's just stupid. In the credits, it says something about the producers of "There's Something About Mary" ripping this movie off. Nothing in "There's Something About Mary" reminded me of this "movie" in the slightest. Maybe they stole the funny parts and didn't give them back, and that's why we're left with this unfunny non-movie. I'll admit that my sense of humor is very low-brow, immature, and childish, but I still didn't even laugh once. Not a chuckle. Not even a titter. There is no way that any human being could find this "movie" funny or entertaining in any way. Don't be deceived by the one star in my rating. It's not even worth one star, I just didn't have the option of picking anything lower. Don't make the same mistake I made. There's 1.5 hours of my life that I wasted and I'll never have back. Don't let it happen to you.
It's no KFM, but it's OK. .......2005-07-28
Completly forget what's on the cover of this film... the actress' it shows have about 2 minute's on screen time, Slash has a pethetic role for one scene, and Michael Clark Duncan's gay/virgin scenes are not funny. Plus, I was never offended at anything.
From my understanding after seeing this, it seems to be a reunion show of some cable access show that they did in 1988 or something.
It's kind of a sketch comedy movie along the lines of Kentucky Fried Movie, but it's not. This movie does have afew laughs and histerical moments, but a few scenes dont work. Like the guy who is tryin gto be Arnold Swartzenegger who sounds more like Jaun Claude Vanne Damm... his scenes should have been one scene, not showing a teaser bit for it in between other scenes before it was shown who he was talking to (if you've seen this film, you'll know what I mean)
A few things dont work at all, but yet, there are also things that didnt work in KFM but that didnt stop it from being a classic. I'm defintly not saying this movie is going to be a classic, far from it... but it it is good to see a new movie of this kind where it's just for fun and not for awards.
Where else this movie fails is repeating things. It shows the same situation repeated, but instead of being noticibly diffrent, it almost just seems like the had 40 minute's of footage when the cut the film, and to extend it they put in the alternate takes... even one of the Michael Clark Duncan scenes show them laughing at the end of it, and I think i think that was them really laughing doing an improve.
Mostly it's the lack of more scenes, and repeating or showing the alternate take that makes this movie suffer from being a great movie. But, it is only an independant one, it is funny enough for me to say rent it. But, I guess everyone's taste is diffrent, 'cause a lot of reviewrs say they hate it... however, they may just all be the same person standing around a subway sewer grinding into it.
It's OK, it's not perfect, it's not great, but hell, it's better then that pethetic Groove Tube.
Get some Troma instead.......2004-12-23
Oh, lordy.
I bought this movie after seeing it at Media Play and remembering the late-night commercial. After getting totally into recent Troma movies, I figured this would be a good addition to the "offensive, f'ed up" movie collection. I was wrong. Dead wrong. I'm not even half-way through this movie, just getting to the Dickman skit, and I'm writing this review. Please don't buy this movie.
First of all, I wasn't offended. Granted, it's hard to offend me. But I can't imagine very much in this movie that would offend anyone.
Second, the movie is just not funny. Nothing in this movie is funny. Really. Absolutely nothing. You'll see somewhat graphic violence. You'll see some gratuituous female nudity. You'll see celebrity cameos. You'll see a lot of things that the makers of this movie thought would be funny. But unfortunately, they forgot to write jokes around them. Was anything in this movie even trying to be funny? It's really hard to tell. Ultimately, all you'll really see in this movie is your hard-earned money being flushed down the drain.
Again, please don't make the same mistake I did. Please don't buy this movie. Don't even watch this movie. You might be tempted just because of all the bad reviews you'll read here saying how bad it is. But don't be fooled. This is not "so bad it's good". This is just bad.
In closing, if you're looking for a movie that IS funny AND offensive, I would point you to recent Troma releases such as "Terror Firmer" and "Toxic Avenger 4". Just please don't buy this movie.

Uh............so where's Melanie?.......2006-01-20
I inquired of Amazon if they had any (ahem) "product" of my favorite actress, Melanie Anton. They directed me to this movie. Is she in it? What does she do? She's not one of the "victims" is she?
DECENT ENOUGH.......2005-09-10
Ah, Blockbuster, the perfect place to find that perfect slasher flick for the whole family. Slash is one of those rare movies that is so bad, it's actually good! A blah rock band named...go ahead...guess...Slash, is performing at some rundown, no-name nightclubs. Suddenly, a relative of one of the members dies, so the whole band heads out to BFE/hometown of the band member, for the funeral. But little does the rest of the band know that one of them has a horrible secret. As a boy, one of them accidentally set his father on fire after discovering he's a cold-blooded killer, and he's been traumatized by it ever since. And to top it all off, someone in scarecrow drag and wearing a metal mask, is offing them (in particularly bloodless ways) one-by-one. Face it, people, this isn't Saw...heck, it's not even Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2, it's just a fun horror flick for you and your buddies to rent and watch late at night. reccomended.
Heavy riffs and Gravity defying solos can't make up for Slash"s uptight acting!.......2005-07-17
PLOT: Slash gets mad at axle and goes on a murderous killing spree. Then he does some pretty intense guitar solos. SOLOS:5 STAR ACTING:1 STAR
RECOMMENED: ANYTHING WITH BURT RENOLDS
Great Horror.......2005-06-17
A couple of weeks ago in a video store, My sister and I stumbled upon this movie. We are both fans of horror, so we figued, what the hey. We got it and watched it the second we got home. From the first frame to the last, we were almost in a trance. We laughed and laughed at the death scenes. The best aspect of this movie would have to be the music. I only wish direct to video horror movies have soundtracks. I give this an A+++ for originality and scariness.
A CUT JUST ABOVE.......2005-05-02
Mac, the lead singer of a rock group on the verge of making it big, goes back to his rural home when a member of his family dies. True to the form, the blood hits the fan once he and his band get there. Another Scream clone (cool music, cool kids, cool look...), South African SLASH has all the making of a great slasher flick, and succeeds... almost. What it lacks, besides a better-tooled script, are likeable characters. All are way due for anger management class. James O'Shea (Mac) has presence but as an actor he is mostly wooden. Steve Railsback (from Ed Gein) fares much better as Mac's dad. It's always fun to see him work his craft, however stereotypical a character is. The rest of the cast do what they can with what they've got. What's interesting, however, is their faith once the action starts. Not all meet their Maker, which is heavenly. What isn't is the film's too slow pace. Not much happens between the killings, which is a big bummer, for when something does, it is convincingly executed. As are the production values. Director Neal Sundstrom definitely has talent. It would be interesting to see him move on to bigger and better things. -----Martin Boucher
