3 out of 5 stars It didnt suprise me.......2007-06-19

I was afraid to watch this one for a long time considering what i heard of it. The plot is simple, some writer lady goes to the country and ends up being raped and assaulted by 4 ignorant backwoods types then one when one of them dosent go through with the job of 'taking care of her' she comes back for revenge. It was sick, yes, It was you can say brutal in a way, but i can see something like this happening. I mean it didnt shock me considering ive actually met people like this that were maybe a couple inches away from doin something like that. Theres 2 types of people, normal good people and people that are a couple inches away from doing something sick like this. A bunch of guys gettin together, real ignorant types and then pullin something like this, yea, i can see it. The stupidity of one of them made me sick. He was like just doing whatever he was told. Then came 'the revenge'. Plain and simple, not much else. I cant say i could see someone really 'enjoying' watching this but i cant say it was so bad i wouldnt tell you not to see it. I dont think a normal person would have much interest in this one. People who love horror? maybe. Its a hit or miss.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Nastie!.......2007-05-02

"Spit" is one of my all time favourite little "nasties".
It's sick alright and still very disturbing, even though it was made way back in 1978. Ok, it's low, low budget, but that's why it works.
The film's lack of music throughout makes it all the more off putting.
Camille Keaton, as the victim, is an absolute trouper.
Rodney, is Gold.

This Millennium Edition of "Spit" is something my brother and I used to joke about. Ever since we first caught "Spit" at the Drive In on it's original release, the idea of a special edition of "Spit" was something we only ever dreamt of one day owning.
To have it like this, THX Certified Transfer, Dolby Digital/DTS 5.1, looking and sounding like it was made yesterday, with extras laid on, you've got to be kidding.
And that cover ain't half bad either....hey?

Warning:Definately not for the kiddies.

4 out of 5 stars NOT AS BAD AS WHAT EVERYONE SAYS !!!!!.......2007-03-30

I bought this movie because I was intrigued by it. The cinematography is incredible. Visually, it is stunning. The rape scenes ARE savage, but I was touched by the emotional devastation the actress was able to convey. As a woman I was rooting for the heroine and I must admit I was a little disappointed in the ease with which she dispatched three of her assailants. Her revenge on Matthew was "OK" but I would have liked to have seen a little blood and gore. When I first saw the bathtub scene between the heroine and Johnny I was a little nauseated by all the blood but I couldn't help but laugh at the way she dispatched him. I watched the movie again and I thought it would have been even more visually effective if after the slice and dice she would have raised her hand from out of the bath water holding a semblance of bloody genitalia in her hand. But this movie was made in a decade that never would have allowed that. The heroine's numb composure throughout the revenge sequences is fully understandable (that is, if you're a woman). Kudos to Ms. Keaton for a very persuasive acting job.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2007-03-14

Maybe the WORST movie ever made, or at least the worst that I have seen. Don't waste you're money or time.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best.......2007-02-26

This movie is great. Artistic in a sick way. Sort of has a feminist flavor too it, but in a cool way. Definently a morality message underneath. also, Theres a classic scene that will traumatize any man who watches this film.

Description

Acclaimed director Larry Clark delivers his most powerful film since KIDS. Marty (Brad Renfro) is a tormented surfer who relies on his longtime pal Bobby (Nick Stahl) for rides to the beach and South Florida bars despite vicious abuse. But when Bobby turns his unwanted attention to Marty's new girlfriend Lisa (Rachel Miner) and her best friend Ally (Bijou Phillips), Lisa decides Bobby's reign of terror must end. Assembling a crew of alienated suburban teens, she forms a deadly plan to get Bobby out of the way once and for all, turning friends into enemies and casual acquaintances into co-defendants in a murder that rocked America to its core.

5 out of 5 stars ~Bully~.......2007-05-10

The first time i saw this was on HBO. I knew i had to show it some friends of mine. Its a true story about what some kids do to a Bully. This Dvd is very good.

5 out of 5 stars When you give up and murder your tormentor, how should you be punished?.......2007-04-24

Bully is based on a true high school crime which took place in Cooper City, Florida. Boyhood friends Marty Puccio (Brad Renfro) and Bobby Kent (Nick Stahl) traveled in the same circles of casual drug use and loose women with a group of friends who rarely attended high school classes. Bobby bullied Marty their entire lives, raped both Marty and their girl friends, and pulled aggressive stunts such as capturing a local drifter and forcing him to perform homosexual acts on camera. Director Larry Clark presents a gripping portrait of bullying and submission, and of how hard it is to stand up to the bully when he's been in power for a good sixteen or more years.

With the high school sexual acts and drug use, this film will inevitably be compared to Clark's earlier work, Kids. Bully, however, is based on a true crime with copious court records, confessions, witness statements, and a non-fiction book about the subjects. Any reviewer who attacks the plausibility of the film needs to look no further than Martin Puccio, vs. State of Florida, Appellee. No. 86,242; November 20, 1997. Clark takes the facts of the case and presents a movie which illustrates the fear and loathing of someone who submits to a bully, and makes the viewer understand how hard it is to stand up and change the status quo.

Bully is told from the point of view of the teens involved in the group murder of Marty's tormentor. The question of ultimate responsibility for the crime is answered only in the court sentences, not by the filmmaker. This is a great discussion piece--does bullying invite crimes of self-defense? Was Lisa Connelly the ringleader or did Marty grow a backbone? Was Marty manipulated by yet another bully, Lisa, when he went along with her plan? Did an atmosphere of money, drugs, and plenty of free time create the perfect storm for a mob-mentality murder? How much do absent parents play into a tragedy of this proportion?

Larry Clark has no simple Hollywood answer to any of these questions. Therein lies the beauty of this film.

4 out of 5 stars Frightening and Real.......2007-04-23

"Bully"

Frightening and Real

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

While not a horror film, "Bully" is one of the scariest movies I have seen and the reason that it evokes such fear is that it is a true story. Larry Clark directed this movie that is about teenagers that have absolutely nothing going for them. They have sex all of the time, they drink to excess, they smoke pot and drop acid and their lives are reckless and meaningless.
I am sure that many who see this movie are outraged and that seems to me to be warranted. To see kids behave like this is certainly not the norm. Marty (Brad Renfro) is the central character and he is involved in a sado-masochistic relationship with his "best friend", Bobby (Nick Stahl). Then there is Lisa (Rachel Miner), Marty's pregnant girlfriend. Marty is an average surfer bum and high school drop-out and Bobby constantly picks on him and rides him all the time. Lisa soon tires of Bobby's abuse to Marty and she tells Marty that he should kill Bobby. They go and see a hit man (Leo Fitzpatrick) and ask him to help put an end to Bobby and from that point on the kids start out upon a new path--one of lies, deceit, boasts, and guilt-ridden feelings about the deed they are about to perform. In the end, the teenagers get their just rewards but the cinematic buildup is highly intense.
The movie is accurate and true to life. Based on an incident that took place in Florida in 1993, it is an authentic retelling of what went on. The cast is sheer perfection. When the kids agree that Bobby has to die, the movie reaches its heights. Bobby was a bully and a rapist and an all around loathsome character. He seems to be somewhat of a closet homosexual as reflected by his obsession with gay porn. He drags Marty to a gay bar and forces him to dance onstage. His violent way of dealing with his own gayness is probably how he chose to deal with his repressed desires. He is a psychotic sociopath who has extended the limits of being tough. But his homosexuality is not the reason he is to be killed. There is no clear reason to why he must die. The actions against him are not motivated by revenge but by jealousy. He is due to go to college and to take over his father's business.
The movie utilizes a great deal of potent imagery as the film explores the youth of today during dark and troubling times. It hurts to watch kids behaving the way they do here and we hope they get what they deserve.
The movie will weigh on your mind mainly because it really happened. It is bleak and dark and extremely depressing. It is meant to shock and shock it does.

4 out of 5 stars Educational, but not entertaining........2007-04-17

I have heard about Bully for a long time, and finally decided to watch it. It's a well-acted, well-directed, and powerful movie.

Bobby Kent's behavior goes beyond that of a bully- he's a borderline sadist/sociopath. He constantly verbally and physically (and possibly sexually) abuses his best friend, Marty Puccio. In addition, he is beginning to develop a taste for rape, and calls whatever girls he's with demeaning names. When Bobby rapes Marty's new girlfriend Lisa and her best friend Ali, Marty and Lisa decide to kill him. They take Ali and four other friends and lure Bobby to the swamp, and stab him. They try to keep it a secret, but the psychological consequences of killing someone are more than they bargained for, and most of them tell someone. Eventually, someone makes an anonymous phone call, and all 7 of them are arrested and convicted.

Bully is educational, but hardly entertaining. To elaborate, it shows what happens when kids have no direction in their lives, and no sense of right and wrong. Neither Marty nor any of the other main characters appear to have any kind of goal and direction in life. Marty especially didn't seem to have any kind of standards about how to act towards others (he physically abuses Lisa at one point) or how he expected others to act towards him, which makes dealing with bullying more difficult. All he knew is that Bobby made his life miserable. They didn't even try to bring charges against Bobbby, or deal with him in any kind of legal way. Bobby is a vile individual, but he doesn't die because of his sins, but because his killers live in a moral vacuum. In addition, Bully shows the tragic results of apathetic parenting. For example, towards the beginning of the movie, Bobby punches Marty in the face several times after he runs his car on the curb. Marty then asks his parents if they can move, and his father tells him, "we can't all quit our jobs just because our son is having problems." His parents show no interest in calling Bobby's parents, the police, or helping Marty with the problems at all.

Be warned though, there's not one scene that is not disturbing in one way or another- be the scene about the bullying, nudity, rape, or psychological/emotional distress- this is a movie only for strong-stomached viewers, and hence is not entertaining. Watch at your own risk.

If you are a fan of Audition, then you must see this movie. Its brutal, but in a beautiful way!

5 out of 5 stars There's no love in your punches at all!.......2007-06-15

Koroshiya Ichi is probably the ne plus ultra of violent movies that makes A Clockwork Orange like The Sound of Music. The last time I saw something so gruesome was Ilsa-She Wolf of the SS.

A mob boss named Anjo disappears along with 3 million yen, and his devoted lackey Masa Kakihara, a scar-faced blond-haired yakuza with piercings sporting a flashy purple trenchcoat, with two slits on either side of his cheek, takes it upon himself to find out who kidnapped him.

Kakihara is quite the sadist, but just as equally a masochist, as he even cuts off his own tongue to apologize to a syndicate boss. Given a tip by Jijii, one of a group of Chinese immigrants eking out livings doing dirty jobs in Shinjuku, he kidnaps Suzuki, a yakuza boss, strips him naked, hangs him from the ceiling with hooks, and pours boiling hot oil over the guy's back! Yakuza tempura, hmmm....He also has his trademark long pins, which he uses to deadly affect, resulting in human pincushions.

The mastermind is Jijii. His killer is Ichi (Japanese for one), a mentally fragile guy who dresses up in a black rubber suit with a day-glo "1" on the back. His goal is to wipe out the yakuza in Shinjuku. And he persuades the easily swayed Ichi that they are like the people who bullied him in high school, and that it's his role to rid the world of bullies. "They beat upon the weak and pretend to own the world. Vengeance is yours. If you don't kill the bad guys, who will?" However, Jijii doesn't hesitate to use Ichi to get rid of his helpers, who are just tools for his crusade against the yakuza.

Ichi is so extreme in his killings that the people who witness what he has done see a mass of blood, entrails, splattered walls and ceilings, and at one point a human face that has been sliced off. "As gross as ever," says one of his cleaners, who has slipped on the scarlet mess on the floor. In fact in one scene, Ichi kicks down a door, jumps inside a room filled with yakuza. We then hear screams, then yakuza blood and guts flying out the door. A repeated motif is his slicing the carotid artery, and then fwoooshhhh, out comes, as Alex from A Clockwork Orange would say, the red red kroovy.

This movie is very very sadistic, meaning those with a weak stomach watching this during dinner will find themselves emptying breakfast stuff! Although given the comic-book like depictions of mutilation, it will also garner some laughs for the really twisted--the drug-addicted Kano in the TV set for example. But the scene of a pimp savagely beating one of his prostitutes and then violating her ranks high on the cruelty list. Don't worry-he gets his from Ichi and how! And a prostitute is not only beaten but has her nipples sliced off by Kakihara! Ouch!

After being expelled from the syndicate, Kakihara continues the search for Anjo. With him are tough guy Takayama and a disgraced ex-cop Kaneko, who looks a bit like Barack Obama. Kaneko's probably one of the more decent characters, he's just had rotten luck. In fact, he is one of the few genuinely nice to Ichi, as he's reminded how Anjo took him in after he was expelled from the police force for losing his gun, something that even Jijii recognizes. Then there's Karen, a Chinese call-girl who speaks heavily accented Japanese and English. Her anecdote of her wishing someone's dog dead is funny. Note: in that story, she mentions a nawatobi rope which is merely Japanese for a jumprope.

This is kind of a departure from Asano Tadanobu's usual roles. This actor, the Johnny Depp of Japan, normally has a soft-spoken undertone, but the blond hair, scarred face, wicked smile, and slits that cause his mouth to open extra wide, make this one of his more memorable roles.

With a soundtrack veers from weird gibberish techno to a slow synth score, and a kind of retro-70's style cinematography, liking Ichi the Killer depends upon your stomach, and an open mind to extreme violence.

"Listen, when you're hurting someone, don't think of the pain that he feels. Only concentrate on the pleasure of causing him pain. That's the only way to show compassion to your partner."---Kakihara to Karen.

1 out of 5 stars bunch of weenies acting tough.......2007-06-12

not a single frame of celluloid that is believable here. bunch of puny little wimps acting tough. oh yeah. so bad, so ridiculous...and, ultimately, so moronic.

the reason this "director" (I use the term loosely) tries to "shock" (and can't even do that very well, by the way) is because he lacks true talent required to tell a great crime story.

Let's hope he didn't give himself hernia while straining to disgust us with this pile of vomit.

3 out of 5 stars Ultra Violent Madness, For Better or Worse.......2007-05-11

Live Action Anime...yes it is an oxymoron, but it's one way to describe what Director Takashi Miike has done with Ichi the Killer. It's like a live action version of Akira or Ninja Scroll.

The film's plot is secondary so I won't dwell on it here, but if you have never seen Miike's films, get ready for a ride through the imagination of a complete mad man. The best part about the film is that Miike and his team are actually outstanding technically, and his sense of humor is both original and in my opinion hilarious.

Ichi the Killer is as glossed over and stylized as it is sadistic and violent, and believe me when I say that this film is violent. It's sexually violent content is out of whack as well and alone might earn Ichi an NC-17 stamp but it's violence is so fantastic it almost seems cartoon-like. If you didn't find humor in films like Dead Alive, Robocop, Evil Dead 2 or Kill Bill pass on Ichi, but if you like those films like I do, give Miike a chance, you won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars I like it................2007-04-03

Very humorous take on the trials of the yakuza. the only thing i didn't really care for was the way Kakihara died....it was sort of sad considering the whole movie was building up to his confrontation with Ichi. Kakihara had been waiting all this time for Ichi...getting all excited for a final bout. Waiting for Ichi to kill him. Then he ended up falling from a stairwell. Which is why it got the 4 star instead of 5 star rating.

The greatest women-in-prison film ever made, Caged Heat takes the traditional sex-and-violence formula of gorgeous babes behind bars, gratuitous nudity, and degradation at the hands of beastly guards and a corrupt system, and transforms it into rebel burst of grrrl power. Jonathan Demme's directorial debut, made for Roger Corman's New World Pictures in the glory days of 1970s drive-in moviemaking, wedges his message of empowerment in between the showers and the shock treatments. Russ Meyer alumnus Erica Gavin stars with tough cookie Juanita Brown as they lead the brassy set of cellblock babes through prison breaks and bank robberies, all pulled off with smarts and sass. These women are in control and manage to keep their dignity (if not their clothes) in this fast-paced, hard-edged picture, but it's Barbara Steele who practically steals the film as the repressed warden whose dreams look like a road show version of Cabaret. --Sean Axmaker

Description

"I first met Jonathan Demme when he was living in London. After serving as my unit publicist during my directing of VON RICHTHOFEN, Jonathan and his friend Joe Viola approached me with their script, which they described as a motorcycle RASHOMON. I eventually made it under the title ANGELS HARD AS THEY COME with Jonathan producing. After second unit directing the women in prison film THE HOT BOX for me (which he also co-wrote and produced), Jonathan asked if he could direct his own feature. I decided not to finance the project, but agreed to distribute it because I admired Jonathan's work. The result was CAGED HEAT." --Roger Corman~~Thrown into the penal hell of Connorville, petty criminal Jacqueline (Erica Gavin) must fight against the ruthless inmates, a cruel warden (Barbara Steele), and her depraved staff. Eventually, she forms an uneasy friendship with two hardened inmates. When these three unite, they find themselves on sexy and violent adventures seeking escape, money, and revenge!~

3 out of 5 stars you cant go wrong with guns, gams, & lotsa sweat.......2007-06-11

director jonathan demme began his career as did so many others: an apprentice of the great roger corman, learning his craft in a string of B (or less) movies. this "chicks in chains" flick was his first directorial effort, and it is loads of fun. filled with gratuitous violence and kinky sex, it is a masterpiece of its particular type of movie: an ideal way to waste 90 minutes of your life.

4 out of 5 stars The best WIP movie ever.......2007-06-06

This is the best women in prison movie ever, even without Pam Greer. All of the reviewers for this film need to spend some time studying the language, learning grammer and spelling in between their DVD watching.

2 out of 5 stars Lamont.......2007-04-11

It's been a while since I saw this movie upon receipt. The fact that I don't remember to much that was interesting is evidence that the plot was not very good and the acting left little to desire. I felt that this movie had the potential to be a four star attraction. I guest you can blame that on the writers. I have 100's of DVD's in my collection...and can detail all the good/great one's.

I was not particularly impressed with this movie. It did arrive on time though.

4 out of 5 stars Caged Heat (1974).......2005-11-26

I was really suprised when I watched it, but I found Caged Heat to be much better than I had expected. Caged Heat is a really good women's prison movie. Of course Caged Heat is loaded with the T&A that one would expect. Plenty of fine women in this one. Besides the eye candy, Caged Heat is very entertaining. There's the lady who got caught trying to escape from a robbery, and Belle the woman who likes to steal and crawls through the rafters to get food to her friend who is in solitary.

One afternoon while working outside, a couple of women come up with a plan to escape from the prison. Two getaway and meet up with a friend, then they decide to go back and bust they're friends out. Will the women be victorious. Watch Caged Heat and find out!

4 out of 5 stars Jonathan Demme's First Directing Job.......2005-04-30

This 1974 R-rated girls-in-prison movie is director Jonathan Demme's debut as a director and he is also credited as the writer. This is the same Demme that made many mainstream films, like 1991's Silence of the Lambs (for which he received the Best Director Oscar), and 1993's Philadelphia. The movie stars Erica Gavin (formerly an exotic dancer whose first film was the X-rated Vixen and whose last film she acted in was Caged Heat; she plays Jackie Wilson), Barbara Steele (Caged Heat marked the return of Steele after a five year absence; as Warden McQueen, though she is listed as Superintendent McQueen), Juanita Brown (as Maggie), Roberta Collins (as Belle), Ella Reid (as Pandora), Warren Miller (Doctor Randolph) and Rainbeaux Smith (as Lavelle). This movie is in the "Roger Corman Classics" product line. Corman's company distributed this film, though it did not finance it.

The DVD contains the movie, special features and preview attractions. The special features are an interview with Roger Corman, an "Original Trailer" of Caged Heat, and a "Cast and Crew" information section (three cast, the director, and Roger Corman). The "Preview Attractions" section contains trailers for "Candy Stripe Nurses," "Big Bad Mama II," "The Big Doll House," and "Crazy Mama."

The movie is about a prison in Conorville where a new-inmate (Erica Gavin as Jackie Wilson) joins an unruly prison population managed by wheel-chair bound Warden (or Superintendent) McQueen (Barbara Steele).

The movie opens with the main star of the show, Jackie Wilson, being arrested, tried and sentenced to prison (term of 10-40 years). Then the action moves to the prison just prior to Jackie's arrival. We see an attractive blonde inmate dreaming of her man coming by the prison and fondling her. Then its morning and we learn that strangely enough, the women in this prison do not wear prison uniforms, but whatever street clothes they want to wear (though they occasionally wear uniforms). As the opening montage of prison life scrolls across the screen, one of the scenes outdoors has a blonde woman leaning against a fence, and written on a wall behind her is a sign in big bold block letters that says "No Laughing." This certainly is a rather slow moving movie, at least at the beginning.

While these women in street clothes stand around prison, new arrivals arrive, including Jackie Wilson. The new arrivals are brought to an area that appears to be along a hallway where a doctor is sitting. Three of the new female prisoners are brought before a male doctor, who tells them to strip, right there in the hallway. The women strip and the doctor pulls on some gloves, one of the female guards begins to look very happy, and the scene ends before any actual "inspections."

Jackie then joins the prison population. The women stand around barely clothed (inside) playing games, reading, participating in plays, etc. Sometimes they get to see the outside world when they are sent off to work on farms (where two try to break out of prison). Not all is well in prison, as some of the harder inmates tend to pick on the others (including one scene where a woman searches for her cigarettes, goes into another cell and ribs the shirt off a blonde (a lot less of this type of activity than might expect). The Warden is no better, and might even be a little insane. If she doesn't like something an inmate is doing, she throws them naked into isolation cells (like when she didn't like one actor's performance in a play (or maybe that had something to do with the actress having a picture of her boyfriend with her)).

The woman are bored, somewhat terrorized by other inmates (including some inmate fights), occasionally have the Warden throw them naked into solitary confinement, and occasionally are attacked by the male doctor who shocks them, and sometimes likes using his drugs on the inmates (one shown), and then taking advantage of them. They also tend to have some very strange dreams. The normal prison shower scenes occur (interesting little scene where the women line up nude waiting for the shower, then the star is yelled at by another woman while in the shower, but no "fun" in the shower). There is also some corrective physical therapy that involves electric shock therapy and unnecessary surgery that I don't tend to see in these types of movies. There is also the normal attempted prison break (though these guards seem to be more competent than some I've seen), and there actually are more attempted prison breaks than I normally see (and the guards definitely remember what their guns are for). Two of the women escape and the fact that the inmates were wearing street clothes in prison certainly helped their escape. They wander around in the outside world, robbing a bank, etc. A lot of Jackie's trouble stems from her own stupid actions and her fellow inmates stupid actions (actually, there seems to be a lot of stupid people in this movie).

Overall, the movie is a strange little prison and prison escape film. The film's plot is full of holes, and a little odd. The acting is varied, at times not that bad, sometimes wooden, sometimes good, and some of the women can't act. The setting is a prison, a rather gritty pealing dirty little female prison, and the outside world (including a farm, and a strange little place where men and women wrestle in private rooms in their underwear). The prisoners tend to be attractive, though some are not. While the guards tend to be unattractive, though some are attractive. By comparison, this film is a better film than the Pam Grier "Woman in Cages" movie that is also in the Roger Corman Classics product line-up. As a mainstream film, this film has too much nudity and plot holes, as an "adult" film, this has too little "action." (~4.12)

Straight from the set-'em-up and knock-'em-down school of teen-horror filmmaking, Stay Alive gives literal meaning to the parental lament, "Those games will kill you someday." Not that you'll find any parents in this gimmicky thriller set in New Orleans; they're conspicuously absent when Hutch (Jon Foster) and his hardcore gamer pals discover "Stay Alive," a mysterious next-generation computer game that has a nasty way of precipitating mayhem, horror, and death. If your character dies in the game, you're doomed to die in identically grisly fashion in real life. So, just don't play the game, right? WRONG. This being a teen horror flick with a screenplay that makes no sense whatsoever, the gamer pals (including victim #2, Hutch's boss, played with game-addicted fervor by Adam Goldberg) obsessively investigate the game and its creepy Ring-like origins in the 17th century murder spree of a woman known as "The Blood Countess." Because movies like this are best viewed on a steady diet of Pop Tarts and Ritalin, Jimmi Simpson earns top honors as the gamer pal with the creepiest behavior, and Malcolm in the Middle fans will enjoy the presence of Frankie Muniz as a gamer geek whose primary fashion statement consists of grimy T-shirts and green plastic poker-visors. While not nearly as fun or clever as the Final Destination movies, Stay Alive delivers a few good deaths while blatantly stealing most of its horror highlights from Ju-On and other Japanese horror hits. It's junk from start to finish, but its target audience of mallrats and gamers (especially those with attention deficit disorder, which helps to ignore the plot holes) won't mind a bit.--Jeff Shannon

Description

The blood runs deep in this extended director's cut of STAY ALIVE, the mind-bending thriller about a killer video game. The real world and the game world gruesomely collide when a group of friends play STAY ALIVE, a mysterious underground videogame that kills the gamer whose character dies in play. In a death-defying race against time, the survivors must solve the mystery of the game while desperately trying to stay alive. More spine-chilling gore and action, plus all-new never-before-seen material -- including a new character and subplot -- push this version way over the edge of what could be seen in theaters.

4 out of 5 stars This was a good horror flick.......2007-06-30

I liked this horror flick because it was a different kind of story. It was a story of some people getting together and playing the same game of a "ghost that was called back from the dead" only to realize that the ghost was looking for revenge to anyone that encounters it within the game. If you would "die" in the game, you would die in real life of the same circumstances. It was a good horror flick and did keep me interested through out the movie. I do highly recommend this movie to anyone that is a horror fan and likes a "different" story.

1 out of 5 stars Why Not Just Destroy the Game.......2007-06-24

Stay Alive has an interesting premise and a good looking cast. The problem is that the execution (no real pun intended) is horrible. This was the last film made in New Orleans pre Katrina so I had some interest in seeing it. I must say that the City is quite possibly the best character in the film.

Hutch (Jon Foster) is an avid videogamer who inherits a prototype game from a recently deceased friend. After playing the game with a group of friends they begin to die in the way they were killed in the game. On a mission to find out how to stop the deaths the legend of the Blood Countess is revealed by an author who sounds amazingly like Elmer Fudd. What follows is standard slasher fare with the obigatory jerky girls of Asian horror thrown in for good measure.

The film looks terribly dark through most of the film and the sound design is not the best that I've heard on a new film. Add to this a weak storyline and too perfect characters and you get a film that it is better to stay away from.

Not recommended.

3 out of 5 stars An OK horror flick........2007-06-09

Major points to the creators of this film for creating a horror movie that is different from the rest of the movies in its' genre (in terms of the video game aspect). That being said, this movie could be much better as it pulls ideas from many other horror movies.

So what's to like about this movie? As I said above, it's different. A group of kids must stay alive by playing a video game that controls how they die. As far as keeping my interest, it did a fair job of doing so.

What's not to like? I would have liked for the creators to have more of the actual video game in the movie. If these kids are literally trying to stay alive by playing a video game, you would think that they would show more of the actual video game to let the audience see what is going on. Also, the characters are nothing to be excited about. In general, "scary" movies" contain likeable characters so that you feel some sort of emotion when something bad happens to them. This creates a more intense movie. Unfortunately, Stay Alive's characters are incredibly unlikeable. Furthermore, if you've seen any scary movie, you'll know what's going to happen in this movie. It's very predictable.

My verdict? 3/5 stars. It's an ok movie. Nothing special. The flaws I mentioned above ruined what could have possibly been a great movie. If you really want to see this movie, I suggest renting it rather than buying it.

4 out of 5 stars Some will watch it more than once.......2007-05-28

I don't know why all the negative reviews for this movie. I watched it a number of times and had fun with it. I enjoyed the characters and the way they were depicted. Rip Off of other films? Hey, in today's (especially horror)movies, what isn't? The idea is to make the next one better than the others or just as darn good. I thought Stay Alive did that.

I give it four stars for it's entertainment value, but that's just me.

3 out of 5 stars Not your average horror flick........2007-05-01

I'm sure most people interested in this movie have seen the trailer at the least, which tells you most of the story right there. Dude gets a killer video game, literally, and wants to share with friends. It's interesting, the graphics decent, the acting not bad. Through most of it, I'm thinking to myself, 'It's Doogie Howser turned techno geek'. As my daughter and I watched it, I kept waiting for Sophia Bush to get 'bumped off'. While some pople think it's cliche, I thought it was a bit more innovative than that. The whole set up, of it being a killer video game, while reaching into fantasy, was actually done quite well. There isn't an overabundance of 'hack and slash' like the Jason or Freddy movies, it is somewhat unique. It's not a movie for everyone, but it is worth seeing at least once if you are into special effects and graphics. It isn't nearly as cheesy as most of the garbage that's been getting onto the sci-fi channel. I don't know if I can take another really horrible sci-fi thriller starring Casper Van Dien...Someone save us from that crappolla!!

5 out of 5 stars great update from a classic prison flick.......2007-04-24

This film, was actually a remake of the film "Caged" starring Eleanor Parker and Agnes Moorehead, made in the 50's. This film was remade with a 80's rock and roll feel. The "lets play the name game" scene is an exact duplicate of "c'mon you tramps line up for count" where the girls get off their bunk beds, stand in line and recite their name. The women in the 50's version wore drab prison garb, the new version the women are wearing sexy undergarments! When you compare the two matrons of each movie, they could pass for sisters!!! Both films have a prison riot because of a cat that was smuggled into the prison. Wendy O. Williams was great, understand she was tragically killed in a bike accident just about 6 months after this film was made. Sybil Danning who played the warden, who is a several prison made movie woman herself, playing in great films like Caged Heat. This is a good DVD and a camp remake of a classic prison film.

4 out of 5 stars Should have been a midnight movie flick!.......2006-12-26

Granted, It's not Casablanca but I think this movie was quite good. Some people might dismiss this film as low-grade garbage, however, I think it is good for its type.

4 out of 5 stars I'LL SEE YOU IN HELL, EDNA!!!.......2006-12-23

Some friends and I rented this movie because it looked like trashy fun, and it is. If you like cheap movies that make fun of a genre as well as themselves, this is the flick for you. Acting? Variable. Plot? Predictable. Fun? Hell, yes! And C'mon -- it has WENDY O. WILLIAMS; how can you NOT love this movie?!?!? Get your chick friends together, bring out the junk food, and have fun watching and screaming at this highly entertaining fluff.

5 out of 5 stars KEEP YOUR HANDS ABOVE THE SHEETS LADIES!!!!.......2006-06-23

I had seen this film years ago when my older sister and her friend had hired it.

I hadn't seen this for years and only remembered a few scenes from the film, so I decided to buy it to see again.

I love it!

If you understand that it's a spuff of women in Prison movies and not to be taken too seriously, then I think you'll enjoy the film better. It's fun and funny in many places.

Lead Linda Carol is impressive. I like her alot, and really enjoyed her as the lead. Where is she today?

I wish she was working more. I miss her!

Wendy O' Williams is awesome in this film. She's tough and will take no crap from nobody.

This film has it's own special place in my heart.

Reform School Girls was a hilarious film about women behind bars.Pat Ast was hysterical as the head matron and the movie itself was very campy. The dialog and action scenes were very entertaining and some of the expressions on Pat Asts face were a riot.I highly recommend this film for campy entertainment and great laughs.

4 out of 5 stars blood and comedy.......2007-06-12

this film is cheesy, stupid, mostly bad acting and worth purchasing if your a true fan of the genre! I love the black actor in this film, he was also great in the original "dawn of the dead" of the late 70's. some of the best cheesy one liners in horror film history are in this flick. i give this one 4 stars. so if you love "the texas chainsaw massacre" and love horror films, i say spark up a bowl and enjoy the film!

2 out of 5 stars Not Bad, Not Good.......2007-01-14

First of all, you'd think a movie called Leatherface would tell us something about Leatherface, but it's just something used to sell the movie. Now that that's out of the way I'll say this: I don't think I've seen less happen in a 90 minutes movie. Honestly, the series of events that take place in this movie only goes by so fast because nothing much happens. That said, this is A VAST IMPROVEMENT OVER TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2. They didn't yank our chains trying to make this into some goofball comedy, and rightfully so, Tobe Hooper wasn't even realistically considered to direcy. Unfortunately, no one really was, not even the director, Jeff Bur, who's vision was stripped of all its gorey glory. Like he says in the short documentary on this disc, The movie is called Leatherface - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, so what are people surprised about? Particularly the MPAA, who seem to live for the ruin of directors making studio horror films. Well, fortunately this is New Line we're talking about here, and just like they did with their Jason Goes to Hell DVD, they give us the R-Rated version that saves us the trouble of looking away from the gorey parts, and the Unrated Version that actually does make us look away. Too bad the movie just isn't good. It's not bad either. I put it right in the middle because of the strong comeback it makes from TCM 2, but it really just doesn't grab the audience's attention. Not even Viggo Mortenson's unknown roll in the movie really does anything for the movie, but I do recommend this to horror fans, or TCM fans. The DVD is nice, with a 30+ minute documentary that's very honest about the making of the movie and the frustration faced by the director. There's a commentary as well, with deleted scenes, and alternate ending, and trailers.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-01-04

I saw This movie and is really good, is better that part 2, the part 2 really sucks, but this is awesome. check this....

4 out of 5 stars Differences between 'R' rated and 'rated' version.......2006-11-10

Regarding the above title, there was very little difference between the 2 versions on this edition of the Dvd. There seems little point in the censors deleting the scenes as they did in the USA and the UK as they do very little to the film's context. Still, it's a very good horror film anyways with plenty of gore (if that's what you're into) and I'd still give it a 9 1/2 out of 10.

1 out of 5 stars disjointed..........2006-11-01

Sadly, it could have and should have been something...instead it is nothing more than a mess.
Joe Unger and the actor who played the perverted gas station attendant with the white film over one eye
are very good. This, however, is hardly enough to recommend the flick.

Director Jack Hill, a protégé of the original schlockmeister, Roger Corman, knew his way around a low budget and a shocking subject. Women-in-prison films were nothing new in 1971, but The Big Doll House had it all--sex, violence, nudity, a sadistic guard, and a sexually frustrated warden--and served it up with an abundance of cheapjack energy and tongue-in-cheek humor. The beauty of Hill's movies lay in the way they could appeal not only to the hordes who would go see them at drive-ins but also to the true trash-cinema fans who could appreciate his offbeat sensibilities. The plot is rather hoary, with a new inmate discovering the corruption of the prison setup, complete with a drugged-out psycho, a cellmate informer, and a guard who delights in torturing the women with poisonous snakes. The girls put their heads together and begin to devise a way out of their tropical hellhole, but not before disrobing several times and having a knock-down, drag-out fight in the muddy rice paddy where they're forced to toil all day. The Big Doll House, like some of Hill's other movies, was shot in the Philippines, with the cast and crew making up plot elements and dialogue in near-guerrilla filmmaking. Though the islands were a cheap place to produce movies in the '70s, the working conditions were boot camp-like. Where The Big Doll House really succeeds is in its mix of titillation and action, a fast-paced combination that makes it one heck of a fun exploitation movie to watch. It's also worth noting that this movie gave the great Pam Grier her first real starring role; she would become a Jack Hill regular before moving on to more substantial roles. --Jerry Renshaw

Description

"BIG DOLL HOUSE was the second film for my new company New World Pictures and I wanted a sure hit. Hollywood had a long tradition of women-in-prison movies and no one had done one recently. While the script of BIG DOLL HOUSE was originally set in Los Angeles, I realized I could get a bigger-looking film for the same money in the Philippines. So I sent director Jack Hill there with a number of great-looking women, including Pam Grier, who left her job as a secretary. BIG DOLL HOUSE broke drive-in records and launched a new series of successful films for me." -- Roger Corman~~Pam Grier joins a group of sexy young female prisoners in their struggle against a sadistic warden. This shocking film is perhaps one of the most influential of all women-in-prison films!~

5 out of 5 stars Ladies in the big house............2006-11-04

Anyone who likes women in prison films will appreciate this classic.... a lot of death and gore plus eye candy from the various players.... keep in mind the age that the film was made in and you'll enjoy it....

3 out of 5 stars Bad acting, silly dialogue, cheap sets, brief but boring nudity = yawn........2006-04-07

I wasn't impressed. The action centers around some barely ok looking 70's female cellmates - six of `em - in a Filipino prison. At first everybody talks about how tough they are then finally some fighting breaks out and some prison guard torture, but it's all tame and slow moving.

The prisoners decide to escape so they talk about it loudly and openly so anybody can hear them, whether they want to or not. They kidnap the crooked warden and escape. People get shot and blown up. The End.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Dollhouse.......2006-03-17

This film is not one of the best Women in prsion movies I have seen but it is good. Pam Grier does bring a big bad quality to it and it gets really good with mud wrestling! I recommend this film if you are into the sleazy, campy, Women in prison movies like me!

5 out of 5 stars This set the WIP standard..........2006-03-08

OH YEAH! This is the film which set the standard for the women-in-prison genre. The Big Doll House has everything you could possibly need if you are WIP junkie: cat fights (one even takes place in the mud), group showers, sadistic guards, scantically clothed gun toting babes, lesbianism, torture, and Pam Grier. OH YEAH!

4 out of 5 stars "Search them...inside and out!".......2006-02-02

In the late 1960s actor/producer John Ashley, initially famous for appearing in a number of JD flicks, hooked up with writer/director/producer Eddie Romero in the Philippines to crank out a handful of inexpensive (i.e.cheapo), somewhat successful horror features. Always an eye towards the frugal, producer/director/writer Roger Corman jumped on the bandwagon in the early 1970s, teaming up with the pair to release his second feature under his newly formed `New World' (later to be known as Concorde) film group, a chicks in chains flick titled The Big Doll House (1971). Directed by Jack Hill (Spider Baby, The Big Bird Cage, Switchblade Sisters), the film features Judith M. Brown (Willie Dynamite), Roberta Collins (Women in Cages, Caged Heat), Brooke Mills (The Student Teachers), Pat Woodell (The Twilight People), and Pam Grier (Coffy, Foxy Brown), in her first major role. Also appearing is Christiane Schmidtmer (The Giant Spider Invasion), Kathryn Loder (Foxy Brown), Jerry Frank (Voodoo Island), and Sid `tall, bald and bearded' Haig (Spider Baby, Diamonds Are Forever).

The film starts out with the arrival of three new inmates at some podunk, backwater, women's prison located in the Philippines, I'm guessing, given the large number of Philippino extras running around. As the women are processed (full body cavity searches for everyone!) we meet Collier (Brown), one of the three prisoners, along with a butcher than butch head guard named Lucian (Loder). After this we get to meet Collier's new cellmates, and they're quite the assortment...there's Grear (Grier), who got tossed in the pokey for hustling and has a real hate/hate complex towards men, Bodine (Woodell), a political prisoner whose boyfriend is a rebel insurgent leader hiding out in the hills, Harrad (Mills), a weird junkie type with pyromaniac tendencies, incarcerated for killing her baby (that's lovely), a blondie named Alcott (Collins), and so on...life is difficult in the prison, as the days are filled with tedium labor either toiling in excessively muddy fields or weaving baskets, while the nights involve entertaining oneself with cockroach races, shankings, snitching on your cellmates, or spending time in Lucian's private chamber of sadomasochistic delights. As the film progresses we witness scenes of torture, a gratuitous and pointless shower sequence, more torture, talk of escape, a food fight, a mysterious figure in a hood overseeing the torture, a catfight that devolves into a fine display of mud wrestling, time outs in the hot box, electroshock therapy, snakes, and fun and games with Harry (Haig) and his new partner Fred (Frank), a pair of entrepreneurs who sell food, smokes, and what not to the prisoners (don't worry if you don't have the cash, as Harry will let you slide for a good groping), fantasizing about all the man hungry flesh locked behind the bars. Tired of being used and abused, a core group of girls plan an elaborate escape attempt, one that involves kidnapping the head mistress named Miss Dietrich (Schmidtmer).

What The Big Doll House lacks in aspects like cohesive story, good acting, and solid characters it more than makes up for in unmitigated sleazy fun. One thing that did surprise me a little was the fact there wasn't as much nekkidness in this movie as I would have expected. Oh, there was a decent amount, most all topless shots, a lot limited to flashes of flesh soon to be obscured by an arm, or someone turning their back towards the camera. This didn't bother me because what there was, was pretty nice (hello Ms. Grier...nice to see you and the twins). What was most notable was the complete absence of any Sapphic action. It was often alluded to in the story, but the film never delivered the goods (I wasn't looking for any hardcore dueling batwing action, but a little face suckage and copious fondling would have been nice). The plot is of the loosey goosey variety, meaning this is more or less an assemblage of sleaze soaked sequences eventually leading up to the big escape attempt. This was pretty much what I was expecting, as director Hill obviously knew enough to avoid attempting the premise of serious, social commentary in an effort to cover up the exploitive nature of the material, as was done in Corman's earlier film The Student Nurses (1970), which tried to conceal its lurid and skeezy nature by touching awkwardly upon a slew of feminine issues. While the characters themselves were of the garden-variety stock one would normally expect in a feature like this, some of the performances did stand out. Pam Grier makes one helluva butch prisoner, and I thought Haig's character just a whole lot of fun. Loder's character of Lucian, the sadistic, snake loving head guard was decent, but I only wish she would have turned it up a notch or two, as there was certainly room to do so...and check out the various native to the region extras in the prison...looks like they were recruited off the streets, having little idea what was actually going on...the last half of this film could have been titled `The Misadventures of Harry and Fred', as the pair play a more prominent role in the story, becoming entangled in the escape attempt as the women use the lure of hot prison lovin' to get the pair of knuckleheads to unwittingly help them in their plans, culminating in a sequence where the two end up in their underwear, forced at gunpoint to engage some naughty fun in the back of their truck in a twisted effort by the escapees to return some of the humiliation and degradation heaped upon them by their once captors. To say anymore would spoil things, so I'll leave it at that...overall, The Big Doll House was generally what I expected, an entertaining film packed with good, wholesome, scuzzy fun. This film was followed up a year later by one titled The Big Bird Cage (1972), which also featured Grier, and was written and directed by Jack Hill.

The fullscreen (1.33:1) picture quality on this DVD release is decent, and the Dolby Digital audio comes through well. As far as special features, there's cast and crew biographies, an original theatrical trailer, and a five minute interview piece between Leonard Maltin and Roger Corman where the two talk about this film like it was some form of high art. Corman also claims he decided to make this film in the Philippines because he thought he could get more for his money, but I think it was really just an effort to keep more dough in his pocket rather than spend what he saved on better production values. Also included are previews for the films Death Race 2000 (1975), Grand Theft Auto (1977), Eat My Dust (1976), Big Bad Mama (1974), and Humanoids from the Deep (1980), all recently re-issued onto DVD by Walt Disney Video, which, within the past year, acquired the release rights to Corman's extensive Concorde-New Horizons catalog of films.

Cookieman108

If I learned anything from this film, it's that if you ever find yourself in prison, avoid, if at all possible, sharing a cell with a junkie.

A harsh, cutting, and wickedly funny look into the darker side of show business, Swimming with Sharks tells the story of a naive and eager assistant (Frank Whaley) and his slide into the cutthroat world of Hollywood power struggles. Whaley goes to work for a top movie executive (Kevin Spacey) who almost immediately begins to wear down his new assistant's exuberance with his whining, egomaniacal tantrums and relentless verbal abuse, even as he promises his young charge a chance to move up the ladder. Culminating in a violent and ultimately ironic confrontation between mentor and protégé, this brutal 1994 black comedy benefits from some razor-sharp writing and terrific comic turns from both Whaley (Hoffa) as one whose idealism is irrevocably shattered, and Spacey (Seven, L.A. Confidential), deliciously funny as a caustic, belligerent, and ultimately sad figure. A savage indictment of both the movie business and the price of ambition, Swimming with Sharks is one of the best black comedies in recent years. --Robert Lane

    4 out of 5 stars Biting!.......2007-05-07

Brilliantly acted satire that was overlooked at the box office. The end is very disturbing and was the only part of the movie I didn't like and didn't feel it fit the story, otherwise I would have given it five stars. Five stars for the performances though, not one weak link in this film! Anyone interested in Hollywood and movies will want to see this.

    2 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTED.......2007-03-13

This is one of our favorite movies.....but, when we sat down to enjoy it, the last 2 scene segments would not play. Very unsettling!

    2 out of 5 stars I just didn't get it.......2006-05-13

This movie seemed to vacillate between funny ha ha office bullsh*t and then really freaky stuff that made me cringe and want to retch. I don't like that; going back and forth and not knowing what they "want" from me. And I REALLY didn't 'get' the ending. I didn't buy the romance. The only thing I enjoyed about this whole movie was Kevin Spacey; that's it. Just skip through the rest of the crap.

2 out of 5 stars Swimming With Sharks - Kevin Spacey.......2006-03-20

This film is beautifully acted by Kevin Spacey, but far too dark and gloomy for comfortable viewing.

It may indeed depict what the writer thought of the film world, but why inflict this depiction on the world I ask.

The story is cynical, cruel and I found the last half of the film very uncomfortable to watch. Not a favourite.

4 out of 5 stars Spacey at his best.......2005-11-03

Whether you like Kevin Spacey or not, the character he plays in Swimming With Sharks will inspire a lot of different reactions from you. You'll hate him, you'll laugh because of him, you'll feel sorry for him, and in the end, you won't really know how you feel about him. But along the way, you'll enjoy a dark but funny ride.

Frank Whaley's character, Guy, is a rookie in the entertainment business with a wet-behind-the-ears attitude. He eventually becomes a trusting, naive victim of the cutthroat world of Hollywood movie production. In trying to make it to the top, he gets chewed up by the system. When Guy finally snaps, its Spacey, playing Guy's overbearing, over-the-top boss, that he goes after.

The movie tells most of its story through flashbacks, which can be distracting and interrupt the flow of the story. I didn't really mind it, but some people might. The end is a bit of a letdown and certainly doesn't end the way you might expect it to. And what starts as a comedy, progressively gets darker and less comedic. Spacey's character even adds some wisdom and insights into showbiz that makes you question Guy's supposedly righteousness at getting back at his terror of a boss and sticking up for himself.

All in all, I enjoyed the movie. I think its one of those good stories that not many people appreciate. You might love it or hate it, but its worth giving it a try.

3 out of 5 stars Fernando Lamas a good bad guy.......2007-01-02

I admit - Raquel Welch, what a woman! I liked the acters in this flick. It wasn't bad. Burt Reynolds played a good wastrel. Fernando Lamas was the best though as the evil Mexican Commandant with his Colonel Klink sidekick/advisor (Victor Newman from the 'Young & the Restless'). Actually, Victor Newman, is an excellent cool actor. He should have been in more leading roles. I like his cool Prussian demeanor and would make a great stock bad guy. I was surprised that Jim Brown was able to pull it off not too bad.

One of those good 70s westerns, I recommend it.

This was a very good film, I had not seen this movie in years. Shipping was fast on this item so I was pleased with that. Overall I was very pleased with the movie and purchase. Oh!, the price was reasonable, for this was a big plus.

3 out of 5 stars OK movie, some good parts.......2006-07-08

Overall, the movie is an OK western. Very watchable, but not great by any definition of the word. But it has some memorable scenes, like the Raquel Welch scene at the water tower.

4 out of 5 stars Exciting western with Brown, Reynolds, and Welch.......2006-05-30

100 Rifles will never be considered a great western, but it is a fun watch with plenty of action and a good leading cast. A Phoenix sheriff, Lyedecker, is pursuing a bank robber, Yaqui Joe a half-breed bandit, and ends up finding him in Mexico amidst an uprising. Before Lyedecker can bring him in, he is captured alongside Joe who is wanted for giving rifles to the Yaqui Indians by the Mexican Army. After a narrow escape, Lyedecker forms an uneasy, very uneasy, alliance with Joe to help the Yaquis fight back against the Mexican Army. 100 Rifles is one of many westerns that was released in the late 1960s trying to take advantage of the success of the Italian spaghetti westerns. It has the feel of spaghettis and was filmed in Almeria, but was American financed. All that aside, its a very enjoyable western with plenty of action. Add a great score from Jerry Goldsmith and a great looking print on this new DVD, and you can't miss.

Jim Brown stars as Lyedecker, the Phoenix sheriff trying to bring in Yaqui Joe for robbing a bank of $6,000. Brown isn't considered a great actor, but he's very good here. The man simply has a great presence on screen. Burt Reynolds plays Yaqui Joe, a half-breed bandit trying to give rifles to the Yaqui Indians. His part gives him some very funny lines, and together with Brown, they make a great duo. Raquel Welch plays Sarita, the love interest who fights alongside the men. She has a love scene with Brown, that at the time seemed shocking, but its pretty tame. As expected, Ms. Welch looks amazing, and director Tom Gries gives the viewer plenty of chances to oggle her.
