The viewer is spared nothing in a slew of grisly hi-jinks and wacky murders, courtesy of the producing duo of Nick Marino (Godfather III) and Nancy Paloian (Dude, Where's My Car?). In the abandoned Hollywood mansion of late matinee idol Lance Hayward (Spartacus' John Ireland), each new intruder meets a hideous demise perpetrated by a mysterious killer disguised as the actor's greatest cinematic characters. One by one, Hollywood's greatest B-players get hacked to bits as the Hollywood Hills come alive with the sound of screaming! Featuring Alan Hale, Jr. (Gilligan's Island), Aldo Ray (The Green Berets), Dan Haggerty (Grizzly Adams), Cameron Mitchell (The Toolbox Murders), and scream queen Michelle Bauer (Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers)!

With breathtaking verisimilitude, Bloody Sunday posits an immediate, you-are-there re-creation of Ireland's most controversial contemporary tragedy. From dusk to dawn, the events of January 30, 1972, are presented in convincing verité fashion; by employing rapid fade-to-black transitions, director Paul Greengrass approaches two perspectives with equal anticipation of potential disaster, based on facts as reported in Don Mullan's politically influential book Eyewitness Bloody Sunday. Ivan Cooper (James Nesbitt) is, ironically, a Protestant Member of Parliament, leading a peaceful but tensely expectant civil rights march through the Catholic "bogside" of the city of Derry, in protest of the British practice of internment without trial. He watches in horror as his throng of unarmed protesters splinters against British paramilitaries who impulsively open fire. No question where Greengrass's sympathies lie (heard but not seen, the first shots are British), but despite charges of inaccuracy and bias, Bloody Sunday will likely stand as the definitive cinematic representation of that horrible day when deadly confusion reigned supreme. (U2's "Sunday Bloody Sunday" plays over the closing credits; any other choice would have been blasphemous.) --Jeff Shannon

This bizarre little horror movie is set in the mining town of Valentine Bluffs, which may be in Canada, though the odd, indeterminate accents of the cast are perhaps meant to suggest that it is truly a regionless everyland. In a cruel twist of fate, the Bluffers have not celebrated Valentine's Day in 20 years due to a terrible mining accident. This year is to be the first return of the Valentine's Dance--repeatedly described by adults as the biggest event of the year--but someone (or something?) is trying to put a stop to the fun by delivering heart-shaped candy boxes with real hearts in them. The dance is called off in the name of public safety, the young (well, youngish) people decide to hold a party inside the mine instead, and if you think we're getting out of this one without someone getting a pickax through the chest, you have no business watching slasher movies. --Ali Davis

From director Mary Lambert (Pet Sematary, The In Crowd), the terrifying Urban Legend trilogy comes full circle with URBAN LEGENDS: BLOODY MARY, delivering enough hair-raising scares to rival The Grudge and The Ring. On a prom-night dare, a trio of high-school friends chant an incantation, unleashing an evil spirit from the past with deadly consequences. That same night, the girls are abducted by a gang of high-school jocks. Once rescued, their tormentors receive their just desserts, dying one by one in a chain reaction of gruesome murders, each with a bizarre "Urban Legend" twist. Is it all just a high-school prank taken to grisly extremes - or has "Bloody Mary" returned from the grave to wreak her own vengeance?

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Just an Ordinary Horror Film.......2007-05-21

The "Urban Legends" franchise still goes on, with the latest entry featuring the "legend" of "Bloody Mary." According to this film directed by Mary Lambert (known for her two "Pet Semetary" films), the titular Mary really existed in 1969, who is supposedly killed late at night ... well, sort of. Cue to a bunch of high school students, some of whom chants her name three times in the dark room unwittingly to awaken the vengeful dead girl. And they start to be killed in a weird fashion one after another.

As you know, this urban legend was a famous one, previously used in such films as the 1992 horror film "Candyman" (to which Lambert's film refers briefly). Unfortunately, "Urban Legends: Bloody Mary" does not know what it really wants to do. Except for some scenes involving spiders, the film is not creepy enough. It also awkwardly attempts to inject some dark humor into the story, but the film is not just funny, especially after watching more gruesome "Final Destinations" series.

The mysteries of Bloody Mary and her death are not interesting, and the truths about it are predictable for most horror film fans. Not that "Urban Legends: Bloody Mary" is a terrible film, but after all, except for the "Mary" part, this film has little to do with urban legends, and is just an ordinary horror film.

        1 out of 5 stars Dissapointing .......2007-02-11

The "Urban Legend" franchise has been pretty steady for the past couple of years. I just don't understand why this movie was made. It shifts from the slasher feel of the previous two movies and delves into a more supernatural focus. The film is pretty bad. I'm definitely a huge fan of horror movies and it doesn't take a lot to impress me but this was just mediocre.

The acting is extremely sub-par and this is especially disappointing because Kate Mara is in the cast. She delivered some pretty good roles in "Nip/Tuck" and "Jack & Bobby" but she goes through this movie, along with the rest of the actors in an incoherent storyline that shifts from scene to scene with no depth. It's hard to care about the characters at all. They just float around with seemingly no purpose. I even almost quit watching the movie halfway but being the avid horror fan I am, I had to continue.

There is only one really cool death scene that gave this movie 1 star. It involves a pretty girl and a spider. Most of the rest of the death scenes are just retreads of urban legends the characters talked about in the past two movies. The film even has a cameo scene from "Final Cut" in which a character is watching a porn on the TV.

Overall, not even worth a rental. Luckily for me, I didn't have to waste 3 bucks because it was available for free on my Comcast ON Demand.

        4 out of 5 stars Well Done.......2006-06-07

Being a teenager I have grown up watching the Urban Legend movies. I saw the first one and thought it was alright. The second wasn't very good. Bloody Mary for me was very enjoyable. The movie brought something knew to the table. The title "Urban Legend: Bloody Mary" is a mystery to me of why it was chosen. This movie is very much unlike the others and the creators probaly just put Urban Legend in the title to bring more attention towards it. The deaths in the movie are very cool and the acting is not too bad either. The story was somewhat predictable but kept me watching. Overall a good straight to video movie and for how cheap it is, I'd reccomend you buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Bloody Mary out for revenge.......2006-05-27

Being blacklisted by the jocks on their homecoming nights, the 3 girls; Samantha, Gina and Mindy; stayed at home for the night entertaining themself with Urban legends and most of all "Bloody Mary", which followed with laughter when each of them cited it, 3 times, only to disappeared the next day, drugged and kidnapped by the jocks themselves. Samantha began having hallucinations and haunting dreams of some girl getting murdered and her body put away.

Freakish incidents such as death by tanning bed, spiders coming out from a wound, crushed by a vending machine; started happening to some of her friends and the authorities were baffled by these cases. In her school and the rest of the public however, people kept on starring at Sam like she has something to do with it after what she had published in their school newspaper. the only person who believed her was her twin brother, who kept by her even though what she's experiencing was pretty outrageous to believe. While they are sleuthing for answers, they found out all of these accidents happened before, when their parents were still at school.

This is one heck of a horror movie but isn't up to my standards of excellent horror movie cause it's more of a scary by music score instead of the actual movie being scary. But the storyline kept you watching till the end cause it's a race. I love Mary Banner's ghostly makeups and gimmicks. Reminds me of watching my favorite Asian horror movies.

3 out of 5 stars Better than I was expecting.......2006-05-06

It seems like every time I buy a movie I haven't seen, I end up being very disappointed. This is one of those rare exceptions - it was actually about what I expected, which is to say average. It starts back in 1969, as some jocks give some Spanish Fly or something to 3 girls. Two of them get really sick, the third runs away. Her "boyfriend" chases after her and she ends up falling, hitting her head, and dying. Her name was Mary. Flash forward to the present. Three hot babes are having a slumber party. One of them has written an article for the high school newspaper that makes the football players look like idiots. They discuss the Bloody Mary legend: Chant her name three times, etc. So they chant her name. Later that night the football players pull a prank on the girls, locking them in some building. They're missing for a day or two. Once they get back, scary things start happening to the football players.

The first part of the movie was pretty good, but around two-thirds of the way through it started to drag. It turned into more of a murder mystery than a horror movie (Wouldn't you know it, some of the people involved in the 1969 murder are still living in the town). Yes, there's not a cliche left unused by the time this one is over, but that's okay because they're woven together into a fairly good story. Overall, a weak three star movie, but this one girl is so incredibly hot in her underwear scene than it almost - almost - bumps it up into a four star movie. If it only had held the excitement and intrigue through to the end. If you liked movie such as Cherry Falls (which has an almost identical plot as this), and Decoys, which has a similar atmosphere, you'll probably be moderately entertained by this. It doesn't have any completely unlikable characters like the first Urban Legends movie, which is very unusual for a modern day slasher. Video quality is the best I've ever seen on a DVD - you can use the 4X zoom and the picture is just as clear as if you weren't using the zoom at all. Too bad there wasn't a bit more to zoom in on.

Sunday Bloody Sunday is a masterpiece from the days when movies, in general, were much more mature. As written by renowned film critic Penelope Gilliatt and directed by John Schlesinger, this complicated love triangle among three upscale Londoners was a milestone for its time, not simply for its nonchalant treatment of a homosexual relationship, but for illustrating the way sensible adults will negotiate for love, even if it's inconvenient or destined to fail. A doctor in his forties, Daniel (Peter Finch, proving his greatness seven years before Network) loves the much younger artist Bob (Murray Head), who also loves employment counselor Alex (Glenda Jackson at her finest). There's no deception between them--just the troubling dilemma of three lovers with differing degrees of certainty and commitment. Bob's relative blandness is the film's only weakness, but it's tolerable in a drama so deeply understanding of complex human behavior. Deliberately paced but immensely rewarding to the attentive viewer, this was Schlesinger's follow-up to Midnight Cowboy--two great films by a director in his prime. --Jeff Shannon

          Description

OscarÂ(r) winners* Glenda Jackson, Peter Finch and John Schlesinger pool their talents for this 'remarkable, exquisitely photographed [and] almost perfectly directed film (The Hollywood Reporter) about two Londoners coping with the noncommittal affections of the lover they have in common. Alex Greville (Jackson) and Daniel Hirsch (Finch) are deeply in love...with a young artist named Bob (Murray Head). And though Bob professes to love each of them, he moves freely between them, unencumbered by any sense of guilt. Realizing that their situation is a temporary comfort in an uncomfortable world, Alex and Daniel each grapple with their predicaments, she to face her fear of being alone, and he to come to terms with his homosexuality. *Jackson: Actress, A Touch of Class(1973), Women in Love (1970); Finch: Actor, Network (1976); Schlesinger: Director, Midnight Cowboy (1969)

4 out of 5 stars Hidden Piece of 80's Horror Hoopla.......2007-06-15

OK, I was suspicious of this title initially, thinking how could any other horror movie capitalize on birthdays better than Happy Birthday to Me? Anyway, this gem for the diehard horror fan sells! It keeps you entertained! The film is obviously a "Halloween" knock-off, but many horror films from around this time were. I would characterize it as "Halloween" meets Village of the Damned. The camp value includes actress Susan Strasberg performing rather poorly as a school marm, and Julie Brown, who is better known for her song parodies ('Cause I'm A Blonde) than her acting. Yet, she does a great job portraying the requisite "hot gal" character in this type of movie. Also, note that one of the evil kids is portrayed by an actor who would later have a long career in television.

Check it out if you are hungering for horror from this era that hasn't really seen the light of day. If anything, it is a blast seeing the dreadful carpeting, wallpaper, etc. adorning the characters' homes in this flick!

          Awesome!!!

If you like old movies from the early 1980s then you will like this one.
          Hint Evil children
I liked this movie the first time that I saw it back in 1981 or 1982.
I was a young girl when I first saw this movie. At times, I thought that I dreamt of this movie that I imagined it. I was happy to see that amazon.com had a few copies for purchase. When I first got the DVD, I viewed this movie by myself. Later on that week, I watched this movie with my mother. She said it was ok. A few days afterward I watched this movie with my boyfriend. He had the same reaction that I did. If you want to know what reation that was then you must buy this DVD.

3 out of 5 stars Kid killers, relentless and p-oed.......2006-01-03

          [good things]
I really liked the little kids in this movie, they were relentless, evil and just down right hateful. The movie was very suspenseful, even though we knew who all of the killers were from the start. The acing was good, and even though the kills weren't bloody or entirely unique, they were great. The directing and photography were also good for this genre. There is also a scene where the killer is wearing a sack over his head, it gave me alot of great visions of Friday The 13th: Part 2, The Town That Dreaded Sundown, etc.
All in all, I like that this movie featured young kids as the killers, something that is not done very often.

          [the bad]
With movies like this you have to take the good with the bad, and the lack of blood took alot away from this movie. Since it featured kids as the killer, the movie was lacking alot, such as worthwhile dialogue. Other than that I reall don't have much complaints.

          [final thoughts]
What a nice find this movie was. I had never heard about it until recently, I bought it and it became an instant favorite of mine. Billy (Jane) Jacoby plays the lead adolescent killer, and does a great job. Definitely the highlight character of the movie. The girl who played his companion (who's name escapes me at this second) was definitely a great supporting role. Between the two they made this movie work.
At any rate, this is an old and forgotten gem of the genre, if you liked The Good Son, I can almost guarantee you'll like this.

3 out of 5 stars "Just because you all have the same birthday doesn't mean you're special.".......2005-09-30

Are children inherently evil? After watching such films as The Bad Seed (1956), The Brood (1979), Children of the Corn (1984), Devil Times Five (1974), Village of the Damned (1960), Children of the Damned (1963), Mikey (1992), The Godsend (1980), The Paper Boy (1994), The Good Son (1993), The Omen (1976), It's Alive (1974), and this film, Bloody Birthday (1981), I have to say yes, children are inherently evil little no-goodniks who spend most of their time thinking of ways to harm us adults...hell, look at the film Logan's Run (1976)...once you reached the age of 30, that was all she wrote...co-written and directed by Ed Hunt (Starship Invasions, Plague, The Brain), the film features Elizabeth Hoy (The Blues Brothers), Billy Jayne (Cujo, "Parker Lewis Can't Lose"), Andy Freeman (The Corpse Grinders 2), Lori Lethin (Return to Horror High), K.C. Martel (The Amityville Horror), Melinda Cordell ("The Young and the Restless"), and former MTV VJ West Coast Julie Brown (Earth Girls Are Easy, Medusa: Dare to Be Truthful), who's been a veritable on the Dr. Demento radio program with her song "The Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun". Also appearing (in bit parts) are José Ferrer (Dracula's Dog, The Swarm), Susan Strasberg (Taste of Fear, The Manitou), Joe Penny ("Riptide", "Jake and the Fatman"), Cyril O'Reilly (Porky's, Navy Seals), and Michael Dudikoff (Bachelor Party, American Ninja), in a `don't blink or you'll miss him' role.

As the title credits appear, I find myself watching something called `oody Birthda'...what the hell? I'll talk more about this later...once past the opening credits, we're told it's the year 1970, and José Ferrer is rushing into a hospital to deliver three babies from three, separate mothers...turns out all three babies are born about the same time, and during a solar eclipse (that smacks of bad mojo if you ask me). Fast-forward about ten years, and we see a young couple making out in the graveyard at night (nothing gets a girl hotter than tombstones and dead bodies). The pair is getting hot and heavy, but due to fear of being caught, they retire to a freshly dug, yet empty plot (now I'm really turned on). The noises persist, the man sticks his head up to check things out, and has a face to face meeting with the business end of a shovel...followed by the woman getting herself strangulated by a jump rope, and then the pair buried in the dirt...as the film progresses, we learn the three children born at the beginning of the movie are tight friends, and nearing their tenth birthday, for which a huge party is planned...there's Curtis (Jayne), Debbie (Hoy), and Steven (Freeman). They seem normal enough children...except for the fact all three are unconscionable, manipulative, killing machines, doling out death at any given opportunity...especially so if you cross them...which is what happens to high school student Joyce (Lethin) and her younger brother Timmy (Martel), whose parents happen to be out of town. Seems Timmy witnessed one of their crimes (although I don't think he fully understood what he was seeing), and now the terrible trio have decided he's got to go, along with his sister once she gets involved. And then let's not forget Miss Davis (Strasberg), the oh so strict elementary school teacher, who probably wouldn't be so bad if she ever had that steel rod surgically removed from her behind. Yes, this birthday is shaping up to be a real doozy, that is if there's anyone left to enjoy it...

I did like this movie. It may not have much of an actual story, but there is plenty of creepy thrills, quite a few chills, and even some laughs, if you have a gruesome sense of humor like me. One strength the film has is in the creation of suspense, which I wasn't expecting, as the three, little, seemingly innocent children lure various victims to their eventual doom. The death scenes may not be spectacular, but I don't think they were meant to be, as more focus was put towards the uneasy build up prior to these scenes. None of the performers stood out, but, then again, no one was raucously bad. José Ferrer and Susan Strasberg are prominently promoted as being in the film, but that's really just the filmmakers capitalizing on their fame, as Ferrer appeared for about a total of one minute, his time divided into two scenes, while Ms. Strasberg had a little larger role, but not much (she probably had all of about 5 minutes of screen time). One thing I did appreciate was the dialog wasn't awful, and director Hunt did manage to work the cast, which included a number of children (who can be notoriously difficult to work with), very well. I suppose the most memorable scene involved the character of Joyce, played by Julie Brown, who was the older sister to Debbie, one of the three, evil wee ones. Seems Debbie charges the neighborhood boys to peep on sis as she changes clothes, and business is good (one sequence has Brown, who has excellent mellonage, stripping down and dancing around to some lame rock music). Later on, after Joyce and Debbie have a falling out, Debbie puts her bow an arrow set to good use, luring Joyce to look through the hole by making noises on the other side of the wall...you can probably imagine what follows...besides Ms. Brown baring her assets (and her chest set), there are a couple other scenes, featuring other women, with some nice, all natural nekkidness, if you're into that kind of thing (I know I am). All in all a sinister, ghoulish thriller worth seeing if you're expectations aren't to high. Also, I think it's important to mention that while this movie did come out at the height of the popularity of the slasher genre in the early 80's, it's not of that ilk.

This VCI Entertainment release claims a widescreen (1.78:1) anamorphic print on the DVD case, but all I got was a full screen, extremely cropped picture, one noticeable from the beginning as the title is cut off. The picture quality on the DVD was decent, as was the Dolby Digital 2.0 audio, which wasn't always clear, but very loud. There are some extras available, like a bio on the director Ed Hunt, an interview with the producer Max Rosenberg (17:22), who looked about as old as dirt, riddled with liver spots, sporting a pair of binocular eyeglasses, and trailers for various VCI DVD releases like Kiss of the Tarantula (1976), Don't Open the Door (1975), and Homework (1982). Besides the false advertising, I didn't care for the cover art on the DVD case, which I think was originally used on a German promotional poster. The artwork has three children standing in front of a house, the whole affair making the film appear to be one about the supernatural, which wasn't the case. The original U.S. poster artwork was is much better, showing three or four children standing around the corpse of a woman, birthday candles planted on her chest, and one of the children holding a large knife, like he's getting ready to cut into a birthday cake.

          Cookieman108

If I learned anything from this movie it's never to stare into holes in closet walls, junked refrigerators make poor hiding places, and beware of malicious looking children in groups of three.

3 out of 5 stars Just an average slasher film........2005-02-12

Although the story might have been interesting I thought the film was just average, there were some scenes that were so boring or stupid. The 10 year old kids were realy good actors even better than the adults who are just awful, there is also some humor although it is unintentional like the scene where one of the kids lets the other two spy on her sister through a peep hole while her older sister starts dancing and taking her clothes off. I don't think that there was an explanation to why the three 10 year old kids are starting to kill these people except for when they were born all in the same date and that there was an eclipse during that day. The best death scene has to be when the little girl pulls a bow and arrow and launches it straight through her sisters eye, it was about time that bitch died. I only recomend this film to hardcore slasher fans or if you have seen every single good horror film and theres nothing left.

THE BLOODY FISTS-This is a classic basher movie with Chen Sing and Chen Kuan Tai, and also features San Kwai and Fong Yeh in great villian roles. San Kwai is awesome in this but Chen Sing is just flat out the man. From 1973 so don't expect great fights, but expect plenty of them. One of the best bashers ever. 3.5/5

Picture quality is fine but WB added in a ton of bad music that almost ruins the movie. This is not a bad thing for WB to do since the music in the movie was originally stolen 34 years ago. But, since they are such a huge company, they would be easy to sue and they can't really risk something like that. Crash Cinema version is definitely the one to get if you are a fan of this classic.

MOONLIGHT SWORD AND JADE LION-Angela Mao Ying in a mindless movie with Don Wong Tao. Made in the Shaw Brothers tradition with great sets and costumes, but without the excitement. The fights are boring and short and the director is completely clueless on how to make a movie. 1.5/5

Picture quality is great and it is widescreened in a letterboxed format. Sound in fine.

          4 out of 5 stars Paul Naschy's monster mash..........2006-05-10

Originally released as La Marca del Hombre-lobo (1968), aka The Mark of the Wolfman, this Spanish horror production found great popularity on the American drive-in circuit under the title Frankenstein's Bloody Terror (1972), distributed by producer Sam Sherman through his company Independent International Pictures, which was the company primarily responsible for inflicting Al Adamson's brand of cinematic pain on unsuspecting movie patrons with such features like Satan's Sadists (1969) and Dracula Vs. Frankenstein (1971). Directed by Enrique L?pez Eguiluz, the movie was written (and starred in) by Jacinto Molina, better known to his many fans as Paul Naschy (The Werewolf Versus Vampire Women, Doctor Jekyll and the Werewolf, Curse of the Devil), a prolific actor/writer/director/producer sometimes referred to as `the Spanish Lon Chaney' due to his penchant for playing the monster in a great many European horror films (this was the first in a lengthy series of wolf man films featuring Naschy). Also appearing is Manuel Manzaneque (Hotel T?voli), Dyanik Zurakowska (Terror of the Living Dead), Juli?n Ugarte (All the Colors of the Dark), and Aurora de Alba (Vengeance of the Zombies).

Naschy plays Count Waldemar Daninsky, a man who becomes enthralled with a local woman named Countess Janice von Aarenberg (Zurakowska) who has recently returned home from school. Seems the Countess already has a suitor named Rudolph Weissmann (Manzaneque), but Waldemar's manly charms prove too strong so Rudi gets the boot. Meanwhile, a couple gypsies (one overly laden with bosom...homina homina) seek refuge in a nearby abandoned monastery to wait out a storm and discover an underground crypt. Being the opportunistic sort, the gypsies decide to relieve the occupants of the crypt of their valuables, but in the process one of them makes the unwitting mistake of pulling a silver cross/dagger from the chest of a well-preserved corpse, thereby unleashing the curse of the werewolf upon the land once again...smooth move, Ex-Lax. The subsequent maulings lead the villagers to believe wolves have come down from the mountains, so they form a hunting party, including Waldemar and Rudi, the latter soon suffering an attack from the hairy, toothy, slavering beast recently brought back from the dead. Waldemar saves the day (and Rudi), his reward a good-sized bite to the chest prior to putting the creature down. Both Rudi and Janice vow to help the now cursed Waldemar, scouring the monastery for any information, eventually coming across a correspondence from a Dr. Janos Mikhelov to the original wolf man. Apparently the good doctor has since passed, but his son, who shares the same name, has taken up his father's work and agrees to help the despondent Waldemar, arriving in short order with his really hot wife (who, like the gypsy woman, is loaded with bosom), both of whom prefer to work only at night...and here's where things get weird...turns out the doctor and his wife are a pair of swinging vampires, and while I'm unsure what their plans for Waldemar involve, there's no mistaking their interest or intent for both Rudi or Janice...

The one thing many people will notice while watching this film is while it has both wolf men and vampires, there's no Frankenstein monster anywhere to be found, which is curious given fact the name Frankenstein is so predominant in the title. Apparently distributor Sherman had promised a Frankenstein film, and when he couldn't come up with one, he did the next best thing by tacking on a Frankenstein angle to this import, adding a bit of narration up front trying to marry both the Frankenstein and wolf man mythos together, the result being a plot point that makes no sense. Actually, there were a few areas in the plot that were a bit fuzzy, but I attributed much of this to the actual Spanish to English transition. The trick here is to not get so hung up on various story details, otherwise you'll end up missing out on the aspects that made this feature as much fun as it was, specifically the natural atmosphere, the location shots, the vibrant visuals, and the monsters. The inclusion of the vampires seemed odd, but not unwelcome. The movie has a really strong gothic vibe throughout, primarily due to the extensive location shots populated with appropriate set pieces. The performances were better than I expected, and I especially liked how Naschy took it to the hilt during his transformation sequences (check out the muscular physique on Naschy during his shirtless scenes...someone had been pumping the iron). The actual transformation sequences themselves were strictly low budget, as they basically involved someone moving a smudged filter in front of the camera's lens, but it came off pretty effective. I particularly liked the fangs on Naschy's wolf man, as they were quite the honking set of choppers. The actual eviscerations aren't shown, but these sequences are handled in such a way as you get a pretty good idea what's going on, even if you don't see the rendering of flesh. As far as action goes, there's a few lusty maulings, some monster on monster stuff (ever wonder who'd win in a fight between an werewolf and a vampire?), neck biting, impalements, and so on...there was one sequence I found pretty funny, and that was when the wolf man broke into a meager dwelling and attacked the two residents. He went after the man first, and then pounced on the woman (given the attractiveness of the woman, she would have probably been the one I would have went after first). After beating on the man for a bit, the beast picked him up and chucked him on an open fire, to which the poor fellow landed seat first, did a little bouncing around, and then spewed blood from his mouth. It sounds gruesome, but I couldn't help laughing just because it looked so odd. The liner notes indicate that at some point this film was released in 3-D, and some parts of the movie seem to confirm this as there appears to be an inherent blurriness normally associated with the process, but I guess it didn't go over so well at the time, so that aspect of the release was canned (much of the American promotional materials indicate the movie was shot in Chill-O-Rama, but I'm unsure if that was relating to the 3-D process of something else).

This DVD release from Shriek Show/Media Blasters includes a decent looking, anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1) picture. There are flaws present (lines, specks, etc.) and the picture, at times, looks a little washed out, but for the most part, it came across well enough. The Dolby Digital audio track also wasn't spectacular, as the audio level seemed to fade in and out at times, but was serviceable for the most part. There are a good deal of extras including a commentary track with Sam Sherman, who was the U.S. distributor, TV and radio spots, deleted and extended scenes, an original trailer, a photo gallery, and interview with Paul Naschy, liner notes by George Reis of the DVD Drive-in website, and trailers for other films including The Being (1983), Just Before Dawn (1981), Anthropophagus (1981), and Golden Temple Amazons (1973). My only beef with this release is it would have been nice if the original version of this film had been included, but perhaps that wasn't available.

3 out of 5 stars WHOSE Bloody Terror?.......2006-05-05

Not Frankenstein's, that's for sure. Actually the producers (or distributors or somebody) justified the title with a bit of pre-credits explanation, and it's a charming example of the kind of low-rent showmanship that typifies the old drive-in movie culture.

As for the movie itself, it isn't as bad as its reputation portends. Actually it was a pretty big hit, big enough to usher in the whole Naschy/Daninsky cycle of werewolf/vampire flicks in the 70's.

If one has a taste for this kind of fare at all, one can't help but be charmed by the garish colors, bad dubbing, and histrionic acting that were the mainstays of so many European horror flicks of the era.

And I love the additional trailers with their bombastic announcers. Gosh, the days of such innocent trash are missed.

P.S. The most terrifying thing about this movie is how the beautiful leading lady can fall so easily in love with Naschy, a homely middle-aged dude with a bad wig. Yikes!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars A pure classic trash film finally out on DVD .......2006-04-03

This movie does not meet my satisfaction as a horror film. It is pure garbage and silly I cannot understand why other people gave this trash a 5 star. For fans of horror movies please check out these original classics: Boris Karloff's 1931 Frankenstein, Bella Lugusi's 1931 Dracula, Lon Chaney Jr.'s 1943 The Wolfman and fianlly if you are into European horror films check out Hammer's Horror Classics which includes Dracula, Wolfman and etc. If you must purchase this film I recommend that you rent it first otherwise it is waste of your hard earned money.

5 out of 5 stars AT LAST, AT LAST...WE HAVE IT ON DVD AT LAST!!! .......2006-02-12

After many long years of searching in frustration and dissapointment, fans of LA MARCA DEL HOMBRE LOBO have this classic of euro-horror on an excellent quality DVD.

I've previously purchased copies of this film on VHS and on DVD, and found both the picture quality and sound to be terrible. Media Blasters however, has done great justice to this long lost treasure. The video transfer is great, and the sound is much better than other versions I've purchased. If you have any of those other copies of this film, throw them in the trash, and get this Media Blasters version.

This was not the most well written or acted horror film of all time, but it has some of the most atmospheric sets, color, cinematography and sound. A few scenes were stunningly well staged. It's not Lord of the Rings or Hamlet, but it's just very good escapism for fans of 1960s-70s European Horror.

Many people wonder, and rightly so, about the fact that neither Dr. Frankenstein nor his creation appear in this movie. As the insert in the DVD case and other sources document, the American distributor of this film was committed to releasing a Frankenstein movie. He had bought ads and made commitments to theaters, then found that the studio sent him a werewolf film. In a rather silly effort to "explain" this oddity, he had an animation short tagged on the opening credits showing the Frankenstein monster changing into a werewolf, while a voice over told the audience that the Frankenstein family had fallen victim to lycanthropy and were now known as "Wolfstein". None of that has anything to do with what actually happens in the film what-so-ever, but it was cause for amusement, which only added to the popularity of the cult classic. This is one of those films that you either say "I don't get it" and hate it, or you fall in love with it for reasons that might be hard to explain.

This DVD version has good quality picture and sound. It also is loaded with entertaining extras. Well worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Long awaited DVD version of horror classic.......2005-11-17

The first in a long running series of werewolf films is presented here in widescreen format, which is a big plus and a revelation to those of us who have only seen the awful cropped prints.

The extras are fantastic, especially the commentary by Sam Sherman and the easter egg featuring the recording session of the advertising campaign (easily found).

The only downside is that while the film was shot in 3-D and the elements still exist, this presentation is strictly flat only, but as Sherman says in the commentary he'd love to re-release the 3-D version to midnight shows!

To the person who complained the Paul Naschy interview is only in Spanish.... Sir, turn on the English subtitles!!! The interview is subtitled. LOL.
