The exceptionally fine cast--Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones, J.T. Walsh, Mary-Louise Parker, Anthony Edwards, William H. Macy, Anthony LaPaglia, Ossie Davis, and Brad Renfro--goes a long way toward making The Client one of the more solidly enjoyable screen adaptations of a John Grisham southern gothic legal thriller. Teen-hearthrob Renfro is a natural, playing a kid whose life is in jeopardy after he witnesses the death of a Mob lawyer. Susan Sarandon is the attorney who decides to look after the boy; nobody can match her when it comes to playing strong and protective maternal figures (Thelma and Louise, Lorenzo's Oil, Dead Man Walking). Sarandon won her fourth Oscar nomination as best actress for this role, before finally winning the following year for Dead Man Walking. Author Grisham was so impressed with former window dresser/fashion designer/screenwriter-turned-director Joel Schumacher's work on this movie that he later asked him to direct A Time to Kill. --Jim Emerson
Description
Settle in. Take a deep breath. Hold tight. The best screen version yet of a novel by John Grisham (The Firm, The Pelican Brief) delivers all-out, moment-by-moment suspense! Headliners Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones join newcomer Brad Renfro in The Client, a whirlwind thriller that "starts like a house afire and keeps on blazing" (Chicago Tribune). Renfro plays Mark Sway, an 11-year-old torn between what he knows and what he can never tell. A hitman will snuff him in half a heartbeat if Mark reveals what he learned about a Mob murder. An ambitious federal prosecutor (Jones) will keep the pressure on until Mark tells all. Suddenly, Mark isn't a boy playing air guitar anymore. He's a pawn in a deadly game. And his only ally is a courageous but unseasoned attorney (Sarandon) who risks her career for him...but never imagines she'll also risk her life.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best movies I have ever seen!.......2007-07-05
This DVD arrived in excellent shape and in a timely manner. I can honestly say that it has to rate as one of the best movies I've ever seen. I don't think I got up once during the whole movie - it was like holding you on pins and needles.
Not wonderful.......2007-06-14
The Client was a disappointment.
I thought the book was very good and some of the characters in the book were outstanding. The movie was not coherent and certainly not at the level of the book.
The Client.......2007-01-29
Sarandon is always good but if you like Tommy Lee Jones you will love it.
Good movie, however, we have the positives and the negatives........2006-10-07
Plot: A mafia lawyer commits suicide. But before he does, he forces 11-year old Mark Sway (Who lives with his brother and mother in a trailer park) into the car. And so he tells Mark secrets about where Loisianna Senator Boyd Boyette was buried. Since Mark's little brother has a stress syndrome (he can't see anything scary), Randy Sway had to go to the hospital. Ever since his father was divorced, he tends to believe that lawyers are morons (at times, they can get in the way) and gets his info about courts and judges on T.V. Mark meets Reggie Love, a woman lawyer who used to have a drinking problem; at first, he doesn't trust her. After many pelts by F.B.I, mafia, and annoying reporters (already sick of Elvis sightings), Mark has to trust her.
Positives: Mark is told by Reggie that he can't lie, or he'll be just like them (mafia). As such, the mafia in this movie are seen as a bunch of criminals. Even though Mark was threatened by a very nasty mafia "dude", he tries to tell the truth, he didn't tell about where Boyd was buried. Many scriptures from the bible are written in cells and there is a picture of Jesus in the hospital. Though Mark can be a pest at times, Reggie tries to help him because she cares about him.
Negatives: For those people who don't like cursing, there is a moderate amount of cussing in the film. 1/3 of them comes from Mark Sway's mouth, which disturbed me a bit. Mark also gives a mafia guy the middle finger secretly. Mark disobeys his mother by going in the woods and therefore, getting mixed up with all this. Mark got his info about an affair like this on T.V, and he claims that he saw a guy having his legs blown off because of the witness protection program (on T.V, though this isn't shown). Due to medication, Mark's mother fights the F.B.I at one point, though you have to watch to find out.
Funnies: In the hospital, "Elvis" complains about his guitar. The way Reggie deals with Mark at times can be humorous.
Conclusion: If you can take the negatives, then I highly recommend this movie. Though, I'd like to say that you shouldn't buy "The Client" To anybody younger than thirteen because even though violence is rarely seen.
mostly good, some flubs.......2006-06-02
The movie started out nice and exciting, then, unfortunately, every few scenes would have a slip in reality that makes you say "oops".
Here are just a few:
1. Boy does not actually see a man die, but is traumatized nevertheless (for the balance of the movie).
2. Person shoots a lock open with gun (just like in the movies), though it never happens in real life.
3. In a closed dark boathouse, there are the convenient reflections of light on the water to illuminate everything we need to see.
4. At least one, if not two, people should have fired or not fired their gun (I don't want to spoil it). Instead, we get the usual Hollywood "talk-down"... (oops, I spoiled it).
5. In one scene, the police supposedly have cordoned off a parking lot to try to locate someone, yet there are many pedestrians, and in fact it is the important escape scene in a car that just drives through among the cop cars.
Apart from those and other similar gaffes, it was a well-made movie with a long list of notable actors. I enjoyed some supporting characters (Anthony LaPaglia, JT Walsh) more than the top 3 leads, however.
The DVD has some skimpy text-based extras about cast/crew, a few boring paragraphs of "behind the scenes", a bit of text about casting Brad Refro, and some "reel recommendations" that show the cover of some related DVDs.
If you are not picky about "reality points" you can easily add another star.

John Badham's family-oriented adventure comedy, though obviously hatched in the wake of E.T. and Star Wars, manages to create its own identity through a sweet tone and an affectionate sense of fun. Military robot Number 5, a well-armed killing machine, is zapped by lightning during a test and emerges with a consciousness, curiosity, a wacky sense of humor, and a new peace-loving philosophy. Ally Sheedy (who debuted in Badham's hit WarGames) is the animal lover whose home is sanctuary for a zoo-full of strays and who adopts the adolescent robot. Steve Guttenberg is the goofy but reclusive robotics designer who goes off in search of his creation to save him from the gun-happy army. The mix of gentle slapstick and innocent romance makes for a harmless family comedy. It veers toward the terminally cute, what with 5's hyperactive antics and E.T.-ish voice, and the mangled grammar of Guttenberg's East Indian sidekick (Fisher Stevens) threatens to become offensive, but Badham's breezy direction keeps the film on track. Sheedy and Guttenberg deliver spirited and engaging performances, but most importantly the robot emerges as a real person. Give credit to designer Syd Mead, an army of puppeteers and robotics operators, and the cartoony voice of Tim Blaney: Number 5 is alive. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Something wonderful has happened--Number Five is alive! Steve Guttenberg and Ally Sheedy co-star in this high tech comedy adventure about Number Five, a robot who escapes into the real world after he short circuits in an electrical storm and decides that he's human. Because he's carrying destructive weapons, the Defense Department and his designer (Guttenberg) are desperate to find him. But Number Five is being protected by a young woman (Sheedy) who is teaching him a gentler way of life.
Customer Reviews:
Too much profanity for a comedy!.......2007-05-27
While the basic plot is fine and the robot is charming, the acting is weak and the addition of sexual jokes and swear words does nothing to enhance the movie. Skip this one and jump to Short Circuit 2, which is a much more entertaining movie, and the acting is better too.
Great Robot Movie All of Times.......2007-05-22
I love the movie when I watched that with closed-captioning on HBO 10+ years ago. Unfortunately, this DVD doesn't contains Closed-Captioning. I love the extra features and the quality of DVD is great! I was disappointed IMAGINE company didn't add one very important feature for Deaf - a closed captioning. Amazon did put down Closed-Captioning and I bought it, and found it doesn't contains with Closed-Captioning. Of course, I was disappointed and knowing I couldn't do much. (Short Circuit 2 has Closed-Captioning and English Subtitle with Tri-Star Columbia Company.). Hope Fox company will release this title and add this very important feature a Closed-Captioning.
preview film before showing to children.......2007-05-14
I had seen this film many years ago.
I had forgotten how much "questionable" language and the one incidence
of inappropriate "finger" humor that there was.
I would not show this film to children.
What an enjoyable movie to be ruined by gratuitous PG13 language.
WOW DANG ONE OF THE BEST TV DVD-MOVE FOR SHORE EVER DONE.......2007-05-08
NOW I COULD EASYLY SAY THIS WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE GRATEST MOVE EVER MADE IN THE WORLD THAT IS SO FOR SHORE & THAT IS PUTTING IT LIGHTLY
"No Disassemble".......2007-03-29
Nova are a research facility that have just constructed five robots designed for war. After a lightning storm, their Number 5 leaves the group and heads into town, realizing he's alive. Is he alive? That's up to Stephanie Smith (Ally Sheedy) and Number 5's creator (Steve Gutenberg) to find out.
I found it a bit hard to sit through when I was a kid, but "Short Circuit" isn't too bad. The robot is cute and the plot is fairly engaging. Worth a look for fans of robots.

Take two male figure skaters, throw in a preposterous storyline, and you've got Blades of Glory, a surprisingly funny film that almost makes you forgive Will Ferrell for his back-to-back 2005 clunkers Kicking & Screaming and Bewitched. This time around, Ferrell eats the scenery in his role as a sex-addicted, cocky skating champ named Chazz Michael Michaels. When he gets into an on-podium fight with his nemesis and co-gold medallist Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder, Napoleon Dynamite), both skaters are banned from competing in men's figure-skating events. Forever. Their fall from grace is brutal. Chazz is forced to work for a D-list skating show, while pampered Jimmy is disowned by his wealthy and cold-hearted adoptive father (excellently played by William Fichtner), who only wants to be around winners. When Jimmy points out that he tied for gold, his dad cruelly says, "If I wanted to share, I would've bought you a brother." Flash forward 3-1/2 years and Jimmy's No. 1 stalker Hector (Nick Swardson) says he's found a loophole. Jimmy's been banned from men's singles events, but there's nothing that says he can't compete in pairs skating. After a chance meeting with Chazz, mayhem ensues as the two rivals team up to go against the brother-and-sister team of Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg (played by Will Arnett and his real-life wife, Amy Poehler of Saturday Night Live and Mean Girls fame). The Van Waldenbergs will stop at nothing to beat the competition, even if that means literally beating up the competition. They have no qualms manipulating their sweet little sister (Jenna Fischer, The Office) to seduce both men to try to break up the team.
The finale will be no surprise to moviegoers who know that comedies like this aren't set up to make its leading men losers. But there is one brief skating sequence set in North Korea that will surprise (and shock) many viewers because of its brutality. Ferrell and Heder make a great comedy team. Though he has been accused of playing the same role since his breakthrough performance in Napoleon Dynamite and, to a certain extent, plays a similar type of role here, Heder is spot-on as Jimmy. He manages to convey innocence, bitterness, and longing--all within the span of a few seconds and while wearing a peacock unitard (You can understand why Hector is so enthralled with him). Look for guest appearances by real-life skating champs Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano, Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Nancy Kerrigan, and Sasha Cohen, who gets to sniff Chazz's jockstrap. --Jae-Ha Kim

American Flyers could roughly be referred to as a cross between Breaking Away (also written by Steve Tesich) and Brian's Song. Sports physician Marcus (Kevin Costner, sporting a ludicrously big mustache) coaxes his flaky brother David (David Marshall Grant) into doing something with his life and training for a grueling bike race in the Colorado Rockies. The scenario is complicated, though, by family frictions and the fact that the brothers' dad died of a cerebral aneurysm that has been handed down to one of the brothers. The two train rigorously for the big event (part of their routine involves outrunning an angry pit bull every day), then pack the van and head West. Marcus's girlfriend is also the ex-wife of his main rival in the race circuit, providing a bit more intrigue. Veteran action director John Badham (Saturday Night Fever, War Games) excels during the bike-race segments, capturing the breathtaking scenery and the demanding nature of the event nicely. The film is somewhat hobbled, though, by the screenplay and character development; the film plays a bit too much to the sports-movie cliché and the dysfunctional-family story seems like a lengthy prologue to the race. Also, try not to be too bothered by the annoyingly dated soundtrack, and this should be a fairly entertaining, unpretentious little film. --Jerry Renshaw
Customer Reviews:
Do you know the two actual bike racers in this movie?.......2006-12-10
Eddy "the cannibal" Mercxx was the person who started the race. They used his nickname for the principle bad guy in the movie when they called him the "cannibal".
The other real bike racer is the hitch hiker, girl friend of David. Alexandra Paul. She is an ironman triathlete in real life, although that came later in her life than when the movie was made.
A cycling classic.......2006-11-10
If you love cycling this is a must have classic american cylcing film. This past summer riding up millcreek canyon in the greater salt lake area, one of my cycling buddies starts to slap his thigh and said "let's get them to run". I'm like what? So he recommeded the movie and I bought it. I'm glad I added it to my collection. If your willing to work hard at anything you will suceed. This film is a great example of this life lesson.
Solid.......2006-08-26
I thought this was a very solid movie and always have. A young Kevin Costner as Marcus Sommers, a doctor, has-been cyclist, senior member of the Shaversport team and soon to be vegetable. Not to mention, Costner sports one of the best mustaches of all-time in the movie. I give the first half of the movie about two stars, but everything starting with the Hell of the West race is a 5 star film. I personally think Muzzin (played by Luca Bercovici) should have gotten a best supporting actor nod in this one and not sure why his career didn't pan out better. I'm surprised they couldn't get a better actor to play the co-lead, David Sommers was a pretty weak choice for this role. Another plus to this movie is the comedian Robert Townsend was a rider on the 7/11 team. I think Townsend realized after his performance in this movie that he should stick with stand-up. If you can pick this movie up on the cheap, I buy.
loved this movie.......2005-05-29
I saw this movie on TV years ago and loved it. I thought the storyline was terrific. There's plenty of action, family situations, love interest, but, mostly, this movie engages you -- it forces you to care about the characters. It's a great movie. Three words: keep tissues handy!
Brings back the memories.......2005-04-19
This was one of those movies that I never intended to see as a kid. I was 13 at the time, and had seen the preview at the theater before watching Pee Wee's Big Adventure. I thought, "what a cheesy looking flick" and went about watching Pee Wee (ha ha, that's painting the kettle purple, or whatever they say). But what 80's flick was 'top of the line' besides Fast Times at Ridgmont High or Ghandi? Maybe ET, or Empire Strikes Back. OK, sorry about that, back to AF.
Anyways, being an HBO family, I got the opportunity to watch this movie, a several hundred times. What can I say. It's still cheesy, but brings about a family bonding. And honestly, there are families out there like this dysfunctional one. In fact, some are worse than the Sommers.
The movie brought into play the Soviet Boycott, a vegan follower resorting back to McD's, things going on with our nation. David and Marcus Sommers, racing for the last time against each other.....well, for the first also. And I'll never view the National Anthem the same after seeing Alexandra Paul getting naked for the romp with David. Totally unacceptable, yet so taboo and intriguing.
The soundtrack, unfortunately, is next to impossible to find. I have been looking for years, to no avail. So, I have to keep watching (which I will) the movie over and over.

Description
Jake (Dolly Parton) is a down-home Country singer with enormous talents. Nick Martinelli (Sylvester Stallone) is a New York City cabbie with an even bigger attitude. But when Jake bets her sleazy manager everything - and she means everything - that she can turn anybody into an overnight sensation, that somebody turns out to be Nick. Now Jake must haul Nick back to the hills of Tennessee for a two-week crash course in how to walk, talk and sing like a genuine Country star. Can a tough talkin' hillbilly gal with everything to lose and a slick city guy who hits all the wrong notes finally find a way to make beautiful music together? Ron Leibman (NORMA RAE) and Richard Farnsworth (THE STRAIGHT STORY) co-star in this wild comedy from the director of PORKY'S and A CHRISTMAS STORY, co-written by Sylvester Stallone and featuring a hot soundtrack of songs written and performed by Dolly Parton.

Outragiously Funny!.......2007-05-13
This movie is exceptional.Humorous, and well done. All done in good taste! Sylvestor Stallone at their best!
Rhinestone.......2007-03-31
The movie arrived in exellent condition. With Stallone being more commonly known for his action movies, he gives it a reasonable shot at this genre. Dolly gave a good performance too. It's not a movie I could sit down and watch a lot but I don't mind watching it now and then. It's good to be able to sit back and relax watching an off-beat movie.
Loads of Fun.......2007-03-20
I really enjoy watching this movie. I love to hear Dolly Parton sing and Sly is always good to laugh at and with. My whole family aged 7 - 41, enjoy this film; anytime. I live in Australia and have been looking in stores for over two years for Rhinestone to appear on DVD I should have gone to Amazon a long time ago and saved the hassle.
Two stars one for each of Dolly's doll parts.......2006-07-26
This is one of those "it's so bad it's not good but passes as funny". The one note jokes about Dolly's you know whats promote groans, but the guys will like them. But, I discovered Richard Farnsworth! What a handsome older man with piercing blue eyes! Sadly, he's passed away since, but I've really enjoyed his performance in other movies like "Misery". Enjoy!
My favorite movie as a kid AND still is as an adult.......2006-06-20
I loved, loved, loved this movie as a kid. I bet you I've watched this movie hundreds of times since 1984. I'm 31 now and still love this movie. On my first date in 1992 with my now husband, I brought this movie to his house to watch. It was our first movie together. I LOVE this movie and I know every word by heart. I am now going to buy the DVD because I've been looking for it for a long time! I'm so glad I found it!!!! It's hilarious!

Description
Acclaimed director John Badham delivers a winning combination of action, suspense, comedy, and romance! Convinced that a dangerous escaped convict (Aidan Quinn) is headed for his ex-girlfriend's (Madeleine Stowe), a pair of Seattle detectives (Richard Dreyfuss, Emilio Estevez) stakeout her apartment. The watch remains routine until one of the detectives begins a high-risk romance with the woman under surveillance -- jeopardizing not only the partners' careers ... But also their lives!
Customer Reviews:
Stakeout is classic Dreyfuss!.......2007-05-13
What a great, well written faced paced film. Classic style elements create moments of humor which lead into some very tense, heart-hammering thrills. This is a must see film for those who enjoy the work of Richard Dreyfuss and follow this genre of "cop-film". Well done and worth owning.
Better than most cop thriller.......2005-12-31
Richard Dreyfuss is excellent as a cop on a stakeout (along with partner Emilio Estevez) of pretty Madeleine Stowe (they have to watch her house through the night), and he falls in love with her. Before the movie is over there's a big car chase and an exciting climax in a lumber mill with a killer (Aidan Quinn). It's pretty standard fare for this kind of cop movie, but the script is above average - especially the dialogue - and Dreyfuss's performance is right on target. A very entertaining movie; definitely worth a watch.
Not bad at all.......2005-05-06
Although the film lasted a bit longer than it should have been, I thought it was OK. I do think however the film would have been a lot more watchable if it hadn't been for Emilio Estevez's god awful weedy little mustache. How long did that take him to grow? A few months? Take it from me sweetie, it doesn't make you less baby-faced, it makes you stupid. And how about Madeleine Stowe? She was certainly the best bit about the movie, and for trivia fans, she also appeared in Little House On The Prairie. Good grief, now how do I know that? :)
I think the poster for this movie, is really fabulous, but corny as hell! I wasn't sure about Richard Dreyfuss, he was OK, but why did they have to make him fall in love with the pretty young lady? Hasn't that been done enough now? And it's predictable as hell. The practical jokes were hilarious though. Richard and Emilio were having a movie trivia contest on the set one day. Emilio asked Richard to identify the movie that the line "This is no boating accident" was from. He didn't recognize the quote, despite the fact that he was the actor who said it in Jaws. Deciding that this was too good to pass up, this incident was re-enacted for the film. Emilio & Richard actually work really well with each other, and are actually a lot of other "buddy cop" movies. At least they didn't do the old cop-near-retiring-taking-on-a-young-upstart. And is it just me, or does Emilio conveniently disappear for most of the second half?
I'm not keen on Aidan Quinn as the bad guy. It's just not him. And how BAD was his hair? At one point, he put on these shades, and I swear he changed into Rocky. Did anyone else notice this? The shades, the big hair.
OK, I know this review has turned out into more of a rant about the characters/actors, but it's still an alright movie.
One of the best action/comedies of the 80s.......2005-03-28
Though the sequel was lame, this first 'Stakeout' has a nice blend of action and humor, along with the lovely city of Seattle as the backdrop, to withstand repeated viewings. The key to the movie is the interplay between Dreyfuss and Estevez. They really give you the feeling that they've been partners/buddies for a while. Their exchanges feel natural and flow easily. The plot is decent and the action comes in healthy doses. And, as one reviewer noted, what's not to like about Madeleine Stowe(?), although she looks lost during all of the action scenes. Redeeming that is the on screen chemistry she has with Dreyfuss. The 'love interest angle' works because these two actors work well together. I highly recommend this movie-
Great Movie but the DVD offers nothing!.......2002-08-15
I awaited this DVD release along with the sequel and Down and Out in Beverly Hills. All three (3) of these movies offer nothing, not even the trailers were on these DVD's. Very dissapointing. Instead they put 2 trailers of other releases they have coming out.
Anyhow, even though the DVD's have no special features what so ever, they do however have pretty good picture and sound. Stakeout has always been one of my favorite movies for it's campy-ness and I'm glad Touchstone finally dedicated to release it.

Mean Spirited.......2007-06-20
There are some laughs in this one (I must have seen it dozens of times when it seemed like it was on cable infinite repeat in the 80s) but it does seem unnecessarily mean-spirited in restrospect.
so bad it's.... well, it's pretty bad........2007-06-04
I have a sort of fondness for this ultra weird flick. I haven't seen it in ages, but I still recall Nell Carter as the voodoo priestess, and Chevy Chase doing the lines of cocaine floating in mid-air... It's just ODD! Chevy Chase is manic, and somewhat funny in this, and there are alot of talented actors slumming it here.
I don't recall the visible booms and camera equipment (maybe because I saw it formated to pan-and-scan for cable, whereas the dvd is wide-screen), but, the film is definitely not being shown as an example in film schools. It does fit in the 'so bad it's entertaining' category, though. It's like watching a drug-fueled train wreck.
If you like bad, oddball time-capsule films, or if you just happen to be very high in the middle of the night, and catch this film, it is pretty entertaining... but I can't really recommend it for the casual viewer or 'Chevy Chase fans' (do they exist?).
For the record, this film was made by the same creator of 'The Groove Tube,'a 'cult' sketch comedy movie from the 70's also starring Chase, which is actually worth a look. I suggest renting that if you want to see a dated, druggy comedy, over this one.
Need to See.......2007-03-08
Chevy Chase is great. This movie is a wonderful movie and full of fun and laughter.
Love me or hate me - a rare '80's classic - I love it!.......2006-05-14
This is an awesomely funny movie, with a twist. It is one of the few rare movies I consider a personal favourite. Warning, though, it is clever adult entertainment, and some of you will simply not get it. It is spew-your-popcorn-over-the-chump-in-front-of-you funny, but also subtly deep, real, dark and very, very clever. I tip my hat to Mr. Sinister's concise summary, "A little slice of Regan-era fatalism". If you crave funny, clever and repeatable viewing that genuinely thoughful, this is a rare gem. A comedy onion!
Hilarious.......2005-11-18
Well Chevy Chase has made some horrendous movies over the years....this is not one of them. He plays an air traffic controller who is splashed with toxic waste and gains powers which enable him to move objects.
The scenes in which he uses his powers are outrageous....the restaurant, the opera house, etc.
So for a really good comedy, one of Chevys best, this is it. Its hilarious!!

Description
A comic battle of wills and an outrageous test of endurance ensues when this trio is grudgingly assigned to keep vigil -- as unobtrusively as possible -- in a small, upscale resort community. Pretending to be an average American family on vacation, it's an unlikely domestic arrangement at best. But, like a typical family, they're stuck with one another. Trying to convincingly play house while keeping an eye on the home of their unsuspecting neighbors, this dysfunctional clan of incompatible companions is at one another's throats as they await the appearance of a missing witness for the state's case against a Las Vegas mob boss. And if they'd call a truce for a minute, and get off one another's case, they just might solve this one.
Customer Reviews:
Lacks the integrity of the original..........2005-08-13
...but still good to watch. It's consistently funny and has a reasonable plot but you get the feeling it should have been better. Maybe it's too late to save the series with another movie but it would be great to see Richard Dreyfuss on the big screen again, he really is an under-appreciated and underrated actor.
The main problem with Another Stakeout is that it just isn't as strong as the first film. Sure it was funny and had childish humor but Stakeout had a hard edge that this sequel just doesn't equal. The dropping of the R-rating for a PG-13 might have made economic sense but it betrays fans of the original.
Second is all Another Stakeout has going for it is the endless arguing and fast-talking banter between the 3 characters. There's no perfect mix of smart-mouthing and action. In fact, the action is far too toned down and only really occurs at the very beginning and very end of the film.
And for all the work John Badham has done in the past, the direction is lacklustre and uninventive. With the sole exception of the cat's bum POV shot of course. And he does do a great job with the Pacific Northwest scenery. But enough with the in-jokes. Yes, they are fun but there's too many for a film like this.
If you're a fan of the first you might be disappointed at how diluted Another Stakeout is but you'll still laugh enough for it to be worthwhile and anything with Dennis Farina is always good.
The DVD is in 2.10 anamorphic widescreen (the incorrect aspect ratio) with Dolby 5.1 sound and no extras.
Another Tired Retread.......2004-01-30
"That's it, nobody calls me Ed McMahon!"
- Emilio Estevez saying the funniest line from a rather dry sequel
"Another Stakeout" was six years in the waiting. After the first film, "Stakeout," made a huge splash at the box office in 1987 (the same year another cop-buddy film came out--can you guess which one?), everyone anticipated an unnecessary--but perhaps funny--sequel that would inevitably result after box office earnings were tallied up by film executives in an office somewhere.
Alas, the six years passed, and we got...this mess?
Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez reprise their roles as stakeout cops who get paired with a new partner in this watered-down sequel. The new partner is played by Rosie O'Donnell, who is so startlingly unfunny in this it almost makes you involuntarily switch off the television as soon as you see her chubby face smiling at you.
The story starts with a bang--literally--as a trial witness being protected by the CIA is unsuccessfully assassinated--and by that I mean: They die, she lives. What a surprise. (This is the type of scene where the villain is able to blow up a house but the witness just happens to be taking a stroll outside as it happens--or something like that--preventing her from dying along with the other agents who were previously protecting her. This type of thing was spoofed greatly in the truly underrated "Last Action Hero." It's not a joke in "Another Stakeout.")
Unfortunately for the United States, the trial witness never returns--she runs away and doesn't let anyone know where she is. Afraid she may be in danger, afraid to lose a star witness, and believing that she might try to contact old friends, the gruff chief of police assigns the unlucky trio of Dreyfuss, Estevez and Donnell to watch the her old pals to see if she turns up.
She eventually does, of course, but first we get some painfully unfunny buddy-buddy moments between Dreyfuss and Estevez and O'Donnell. She brings a bunch of clothing and a dog with her. They don't like it. Har-har. This was used a bit better in "Spaceballs," in which Princess Vespa brought along that entire luggage through the desert (remember?). This is just a copy of that scene, minus the punch line.
Estevez also shaves his mustache, which is supposed to be a type of sacred moment and is referenced at least ten times throughout the film (he goes to stroke his mustache, he complains about chopping it off, Dreyfuss complains about it, etc.). But for heaven's sake, he's only been in one film so far--we've only seen the mustache once--so a better thing to do would have been this: make a few more sequels and, when the last entry comes, have him shave it off. By then the audience realizes that his mustache is part of him, and that losing it is like losing part of his soul.
But I'm glad they didn't make any more than one sequel.
One of the things that kept the "Lethal Weapon" franchise going was the fresh ideas, fresh buddies, and fresh scripts. (Great actors never hurt an action comedy, either.) The "Stakeout" franchise--which didn't even last long enough to spawn more than one sequel--tries to copy this formula but isn't sure how. The introduction of Joe Pesci in "Lethal Weapon 2" was great because he thereby became the Third Stooge, whereas O'Donnell's entry into the series is nothing but a humiliating reminder that talk show hosts can't always act in front of a camera and maintain the same type of humor they may (or may not) exhibit on their (awful) TV "talk show." (Which is, by the way, consumed of entirely staged so-called "interviews.")
And whereas Pesci, as Leo Getz, added a type of silly vibe to the "LW" series, O'Donnell just seems like a carbon copy clone of Estevez from the first "Stakeout." Dreyfuss didn't like him at first, and--guess what--they suddenly became best buds. The same thing happens in the sequel, much to the audience's chagrin.
Of course, "Lethal Weapon" and its sequels were never more than a few years apart (the first coming out in 1989, two years after the original). But "Stakeout" had six years to make a respectable sequel, and it fails. It fails the same way that many prolonged sequels do. But, for once, it's not because the audience has forgotten the original film--it's because the audience is fed up with the same routine.
The film was directed by John Badham, which is surprising, since he's a talented director ("Saturday Night Fever," "The Hard Way," "Stakeout"). Here he jumps through all the hoops, turning his own series into a pale retread of the original--only watered down: minus the violence, language, nudity, and humor. I'm not saying a movie has to be R to be funny. But if you've got a sequel to an R-rated movie like "Stakeout" and you decide to turn its sequel into a cutesy-tutesy children's entertainment program, you'd better advise the audience before they sit down expecting something funny and fresh.
What a disappointment.
Bothell ROCKS!.......2003-11-24
I can't believe someone feels just like me about Richard, and the ambiance and relaxation value of "Another Stakeout". It all works from Las Vegas to the end, even the Stickley furniture. The comedic relationship between the three actors and the script is perfection!
Great Laughs.......2003-03-02
One of my all time favorite comedies. I agree that it is much more enjoyable than the first STAKEOUT and I recommend this movie to anyone who needs a good laugh.
Richard Dreyfuss...THE BEST!.......2003-01-06
The first reviewer obviously has a problem relaxing with a good humored, fun, well-acted movie with lines well written. It's a kick to just kick back and relax as the movie unfolds. It's the chemistry baby, of the three actors, scenery, set design, writer's workmanship and a plot thick enough to tie it all together. There's too little to relax and chuckle with these days...enjoy and relax. Cheryl, I agree, it totally beats "Stakeout".

The tale of a crafty, mischievous little rabbit who outsmarts even the fiercest animals, Brer Rabbit is a computer-animated rendering of Uncle Remus's "The Adventures of Brer Rabbit". Brer Turtle (voiced by Danny Glover) introduces Janey (Rhyon Nicole Brown) to Brer Rabbit (Nick Cannon) by describing how Brer Rabbit's miscommunications with man and the Moon (Wanda Sykes), combined with his insatiable appetite for vegetables, initially caused the descent of animals from space to earth. As Janey and Brer Turtle follow Brer Rabbit through his encounters with Brer Bear (Gary Anthony Williams), Brer Wolf (Wayne Brady), and Brer Fox (D.L. Hughley), his cleverness and cunning are evident as he continually outsmarts the other animals to benefit his own situation. Brer Rabbit's exploits lead to his exclusion from friendship with the other animals and, while he does eventually exhibit some compassion toward Brer Turtle, he remains a trickster to the end who's professed secret is to "give the other animals what they think they want." Several catchy songs add to the appeal of these classic Southern African-American stories. DVD bonus features include "Outfox the Fox for Fish," a very challenging series of math and logic problems and "The Great Brer Chase," a set of trivia questions based on the movie. (Ages 3 to 12) --Tami Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:
This is a rip off don't buy it!.......2007-04-26
I was introduced to Brer Rabbit via Uncle Remus' stories in Song of the South. This DVD does not remotely come close to the stories told by the lovable Uncle Remus. They are watered down political correct inaccurate bla bla mindless pap. Uncle Remus' original stories had substance and wisdom I didn't find in this DVD.
Delightfully unique!.......2006-09-03
I loved the story of Brer Rabbit and the Briar Patch when I was a kid. (I had the...(gulp)...album of the story...boy am I old!!) It's great to be able to share these stories with my kids. It's not perfect, but it is enjoyable. Upon repeated viewing, a few things started irritating me, especially considering that my very young children are watching: the party episode, where the song playing in the background says over and over (and over) "Work that body, work, work that body..." The siblings in the skit at the beginning are also pretty rude to each other. This is a movie that doesn't feature cute and cuddly wilderness critters hopping along in friendship...these guys are constantly trying to eat each other. I'm glad we rented it, and we all definitely enjoyed it, but we won't be buying it.
but not for little ones.......2006-05-05
I haven't seen the whole movie yet because my 3 1/2 year old asked me to stop it. He squirmed through Brer Fox trying to eat Brer Rabbit, and the Buzzard trying to eat him, and the alligator, but when the bear had him, it was too scarey. He has seen Curious George, Toy Story 2, and the Little Bear Movie, and enjoyed them. You can guage from that wheher this is appropriae for your preschooler. I couldn't help but laugh myself.
Great!!!.......2006-04-28
My son loves this movie. He watches it everyday-sometimes twice a day. He is only four years old. Also, I decided to show it to my sixth grade class before first period. We did not finish watching it, but they have been asking for it ever since.
Excellent Family Movie.......2006-03-28
While this movie may not be the same as Disney's classic "Song Of The
South", this direct-to-video film is a beautifully animated, clean,
wholesome, entertaining family film. This movie is filled with very
memorable characters, plenty of adventure, a lot of captivating
stories, great moral lessons, and superb animation. This film also has
a lot of clean humor without any of the sexual innuendo, lame puns, or
gross-out humor that's found in many animated T.V. shows and films
nowadays. Even though this film is aimed at small children, you can
enjoy this movie whether you're 4 or 40, and it's great for the whole
family to watch together (or by yourself). On a scale of 1 to 10, I
give this film a 10 all the way! You will not be disappointed.

Description
On July 14, 1966, Richard Speck took 9 student nurses hostage. He held the girls, methodically beating, raping and stabbing them to death in one of the bloodiest mass murders in American history. Witness the terrifying story every fan of true crime must see.
Customer Reviews:
A less than satisfying telling of the story of mass murderer Richard Speck.......2007-06-19
With a true crime story you would think the goal is to show what happened and to try and explain why it happened. The standard for such endeavors would be films like "In Cold Blood" and mini-series such as "Helter Skelter." There will be inevitable questions about how much you actually show and whether the explanations will prove at all satisfactory. "Chicago Massacre: Richard Speck" is about the murder of the eight student nurses in Chicago in 1966, which happens to be the first headline crime that I remember after the assassination of JFK. Way back then I was unaware of the story of Ed Gein or the way everything would seem to change after the Manson murders, and long before Michael Meyers) upped the ante in teh cinematic world of splatter flicks. After watching this direct-to-video 2007 film I know a bit more about the murders and the murderer, but not enough in either regard to have a better understanding, assuming, of course, such a thing is possible in such a case.
This film tries to weave together three time lines with the murders, the aftermath involving the investigation and Speck's conviction, and Speck's early life. Just playing with the chronology takes away from the sense of "Chicago Massacre" documenting a true crime story, but what we see does not really follow the murders laid out by the prosecution at the trial. Speck stabbed and strangled his victims to death, with seven of the women found dead in their beds, but the movie shows him using a gun to shoot one woman in a bathtub (Speck did have a gun, but used it to control the women). Writer-director Michael Feifer ("Ed Gein: The Butcher of Plainfield") focuses much more on the eyes of the victims than the blood, so you get more of an impression of the murders than any graphic details. How Speck (Corin Nemec) is eventually captured and convicted is the most historically accurate parts of the film, but seems secondary to the depiction of the killings and it is their muddled depiction that stands out in your mind.
Even less successful is the effort to try and explain why Speck became a killer. The scenes from his past do not come together to create anything close to a psychological profile that would constitute such an explanation. Speck had been arrested previously for burglary and stabbing, as well as having been a suspect in a rape, a beating death, the disappearance of three women, and the murders of four other women. I do not know the specifics, so it could be just a case of Speck become a suspect for every unsolved crime with any similarity to what happened in Chicago after he was caught. Still, the question of whether the murder of the student nurses was the culmination of his career as a serial killer or more of a massive one-time explosion would strike me as being pertinent. However, that is not part of Feifer's agenda and is probably too lofty a goal for a low-budget movie filmed in just 10 days.
Connecting the dots to form a coherent picture becomes infinitely more difficult when you take into account the bizarre video of Speck in prison, recreated in the film, sporting female-like breasts grown from smuggled hormones and boasting, "If they only knew how much fun I was having, they'd turn me loose." The quote appears at the start of the film, out of context, and then again at the end, I think the line is privileged as explaining Speck, when it does no such thing. The incongruity of seeing Speck on that video, snorting cocaine and parading around in women's panties, as the man who raped and slaughtered these young women as depicted in this film, is simply too great despite a valiant effort by Nemec. When this film ends all you can do is dismiss Speck as a freak and flush him from your mind, wishing that this film had made his victims more memorable (and not so nameless). It may just be that no matter how great of a number you multiply by zero, in the end all you get is zero.
