4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly fun, campy flick!.......2007-06-24

I bought this movie on DVD for a "corney horror movie marathon" that my wife and I have every summer. We watched old late 60's to 70's horror flicks and laugh at the camp and corn. This movie was cheesy but it did have some scary moments as far as my wife was concerned!? She jumped and screamed three or four times and even I was in suspense a couple of times. Shatner is his usual self....over-the-top and grandiose, what can we say...Shatner being Shatner! Tiffany Bolling is really a cornball! She takes herself too seriously in this. It was interesting to see Marcy Rafferty, Shatner's wife at the time, in this movie, playing his sister-in-law. The end of the movie, phhhewww! Shocking! LOL...

Honestly, my wife and I had FUN watching this movie. It wasn't AS corney as I thought it would be. It was entertaining and definitely worth the cheap price of the DVD. But it for Halloween! Classic...

4 out of 5 stars CULT CLASSIC.......2006-11-07

"Kingdom of the Spiders" is a great 70's cult classic starring William Shatner!!! While not a perfect print of the film,it's fine just the same, actually very good for a Goodtimes Entertainment release!!! I was very happy finally to find it on DVD!!! Two thumbs up!!! Five stars!!! A+

5 out of 5 stars Fogotten Little AWESOME HORROR FLICK.......2006-08-15

Kingdom of the Spiders out does Arachnaphobia in every way possible. Its Creepier, meaner, and its down right more horrifying. While Watching it in the back of my head I was thinking in this "Nature vs Mankind" flick where Nature Rebels and fights back against the human race, This is at all very possible to happen...Enjoy! Not reccomended for anyone with Extreme cases of Arachnaphobia...

3 out of 5 stars "This whole country's swarming with those damn things.".......2006-07-18

Note to self: if I'm ever trapped in a house covered by millions of tarantulas and I hear a strange sound coming from an overhead air vent DO NOT stand directly beneath the vent and open it.

Local vet William Shatner is dumbfounded when he finds his small sleepy desert town under attack by a tidal wave of icky spiders. The invasion starts out slow enough but instead of doing anything productive ol' Shat prefers to mack on the females and drink a little cold beer. The reality of the eight legged onslaught comes soon enough but by that time it's too late and everybody just runs around screaming a lot.

Fritz Lang's first major success as a director was with this exotic, globetrotting adventure. It's actually made up of two short silent features that were the first of a proposed quartet of movies about the adventures of high-society adventurer Kay Hoog (Carl de Vogt, whose gaunt, expressionless face resembles a younger William S. Hart) and his arch nemesis, a secret criminal organization known as the Spiders. Part 1 ("The Golden Lake") is a treasure hunt that takes both Kay and Spiders mastermind Lio Sha (Ressel Orla) to Peru, where they battle primitive Incas (who capture Lio for a human sacrifice) and each other for a fortune in hidden gold. Part 2 ("The Diamond Ship") is a longer and far more intricate conspiracy involving a hidden criminal underground beneath the streets of Chinatown, a legendary lost jewel known as the Buddha Head Diamond, and an ambitious plot to rule all of Asia. Full of secret passages, coded messages, treasure maps, double-crosses, and death-defying escapes, Lang's pulpy action-fantasy borrows from the wacky serials of Louis Feuillaude (notably the deliriously entertaining Les Vampires). But behind the wild plots, gorgeous sets, and driving, breakneck-paced direction lies a dark undercurrent of death and doom that transforms his gallant hero into a brooding, vengeful spirit. The prints are seriously scratched and worn in places but always watchable. They have been appropriately tinted, and Gaylord Carter's organ score is upbeat and exciting. --Sean Axmaker

Description

The Spiders by Fritz Lang is considered by many to be the real beginning of the golden age of the German silent film. An adventure story about an organized band of criminals who scheme to dominate the world, "The Spiders" was long considered a lost film until its three year reconstruction by film historians David and Kimberly Shepard using original German censorship records and Lang's own instructions for color tinting.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Adventure, Poor DVD Package.......2007-03-07

Apparently there's no decent surviving prints of The Spiders so it would be difficult to determine just how successful the restoration was back in the 70s. I would dare say though, that a more modern digital restoration could be done today and think personally that this is a significant enough film to deserve the full digital restoration treatment. Be that as it may, the restoration is very watchable and the fact that the film had been found at all and fixed up by David and Kim Shepard is impressive.

I'm a fan of the early adventure pulps and of cliffhanger serials. So it was great to actually see Fritz Lang's early contribution towards these ends. The story has been gone over by several reviews and easily found online. I just want to urge viewers to not be put off on the fact that it is silent (with an original organ score that sometimes verges on cheesy Casio sounds, but tends to hold on to its dignity) because the great visuals Lang is famous for, and fun action adventure should be able to keep most audiences captivated.

If you are a fan of Gunga Din, Indiana Jones and the more exotic pulp adventures of Edgar Rice Burroughs or Talbot Mundy, I can't imagine you will not find this to be a great treasure chest of iconic pulp and cliffhanger-type imagery.

The reason I don't give this five stars is solely based on the Image Entertainment release, because I think the price of this single DVD with no extras is exorbitant to say the least. Outside of the fact that this was a rare film to find and restore (which has nothing to do with Image themselves), the Criterion-esque price tag does not reflect any value-added properties as you would find on a Criterion release, and in fact is closer to something you'd find from Alpha Video, meaning extremely bare bones. At the very least, a commentary track by the Shepards or a film historian would have been interesting and added some extra value to justify $30 for a single disc.

It might be wishful thinking to get a better release anytime in the near future, so either do like me and take the hit to the wallet for the Image release from amazon or patiently search a less expensive means of finding it, like amazon's merchant-shops or other online auction sites, etc. Or if you don't mind VHS, that is easily found for under $5.

4 out of 5 stars More sophisticated that you would think.......2006-07-10

This is part one and two of the earliest surviving film directed by Frits Lang, part one "The Golden Lake" (1919) his third feature film, and part two "The Diamond Ship". Part three "The Secret of the Sphinx" and part four "For Asia's imperial Crown" were never made.

Exotic sets and designs from the Ethnological Museum of Hamburg, in cooperation with Heinrich Umlauff.

A man looking under the weather looks like he is escaping on an island. If his desperate attempt for help he sends a message written in blood, in a bottle in to the sea. As he tosses it he is dispatched by an Inca arrow.

The message comes into the possession of Kay Hoog (Carl de Vogt) rich sportsman and adventurer. The message tells of Inca gold in a remote location. Overhearing this is Lio Sha (Ressel Orla). That night the note is pilfered by a mysterious organization "The Spiders". Now the race is on to see whom gets the gold.

The journey will take us over many exotic lands and introduce us to sun loving, blood thirsty Incas. There may even be a chance for romance.

As with many serials the end may just be the beginning. See part two "The Diamond Ship".

In part two Kay Hoog who previously captured the secret of the Diamond Ship from the mysterious cabal "The spiders" has sworn revenge on Lio Sha for transgressions made in part one.

While the Spiders seek a diamond shaped while the head of Buddha for their own nefarious purposes. Kay seeks to spoil their plot. Again we get to go to exotic places leading to the Falkland Islands. Fortunately this time enough loose ends are sufficiently wrapped up so we do not have to wait for part three (which will never come.)

4 out of 5 stars A silent adventure.......2003-08-04

Kay Hoog finds a message in a bottle floating near San Francisco. The message tells about a hidden Incan city filled with gold and gives the location for finding it. Intrigued, Kay tells his yacht club that he's going to find it. Later, Lia Sha, also a member of the club and the mysterious Spiders, steals the map and sets off for Peru, with Kay not far behind.

Thus, begins the Indiana Jones-like adventure which leads from Peru to a hidden city beneath San Francisco to a deadly cave in the Falkland Islands. "Spiders" from German director Fritz Lang, contains the first two parts of what was to be a 4-part serial. It's not the greatest of all adventure stories and has quite a few plot holes, but it's easy to see the influence it has on many of the adventure films of today. And, the acting is not bad, either.

The DVD transfers are scratchy but still very viewable. Not many extras, though.

3 out of 5 stars An ancient treasure?.......2000-06-15

The film: This Indiana Jones-type of movie put Fritz Lang on the map. It features the same mix of exotic locations and rollercoaster-action scenes like the Paramount-franchise from the 80ies. Alas, the film also shows that Fritz Lang had not yet reached the level of maturity and precision that is so prominetly featured in his later silent masterworks. Ok, the sets look great but the story is even more hokey than your usual adventure yarn. Even worse, the film features far too many of those scenes which are often done but work the least in a silent movie: shoot-outs. So I'm afraid I can recommend this film mostly to film-history-buffs (like me) or people that need all of Lang's films on their DVD-shelf. If you want to see why Lang is regarded as such a genius, you better check out "Die Nibelungen" or "Dr. Mabuse, The Gambler". The DVD: The film is very rare, and it shows: The people who restored it couldn't work with the best film-material but had to use what they got and so the print is quite scratchy and generally worn-out. But this is your only chance to see it, so let that not hinder you. Otherwise, besides some notes on the film-makers, there's not very much regarding extras on this DVD. One final, international note: It's a shame that this German film is not available at all in Germany, so congratulations to David and Kimberly Shepard who uncovered this long-believed lost film!

Like "Animals in the Wild" this DVD is very good. The only better works are those BBC "The life of Mammals" and "The life of Birds" but if your a wildlife lover than these DVDs belong in your collection.

The Wildlife Stories series consist of three DVDs - each DVD dedicated to two animals each. In this case spiders and beetles. Great closeup footages, lots of indepth info make this DVD very interesing. Compared to the only other DVD about insects "Insectia" this is ten times a better purchase.

1 out of 5 stars It doesn't even seem to be rewatchable........2006-08-03

I guess I really can't give htis more than one star. Although "Jaws" was beyond garbage, I'm still rewatched it a few times, whereas this I haven't rewatched at all. It's been years since I've seen it, but, there isn't anything I can think of as being really memorable.

2 out of 5 stars Why Spiders 2 Sucked ass.......2006-02-23

The first Spiders was great it really kept me on the edge of my seat and I have to say that the monster was well created. But this movie was horrible you never hear any thing about the spiders until the middle of the film and when you do actually see the spiders it is on a huge boat. OK huge spiders on a huge boat, that's about as bad as you can get it's so fake. They should have gone back to the jungle like they did in the first spiders

1 out of 5 stars What drove me the craziest about this movie?.......2005-10-24

Do you know that generic door sound? That creaky, quick sound like a vault door opening up? This movie uses it. Ever time a door opens. For every door. Normal door, elevator door, oven door. Through out the whole movie.

They would have had more dignity using the AIM sound file.

Oh yeah, there's also bad writing, bad acting, and a generic evil scientist plot. Not worth your time. Not that a movie called "Spiders 2" would enthrall any one.

3 out of 5 stars It's really not that terrible.......2004-08-06

This movie doesn't have anything to do with the first Spiders, but that's okay with me. It's about a couple that are shipwrecked, and picked up by another ship. The husband is ill, and the ship's doctor is giving him drugs to, supposedly, cure him. He starts to suspect something odd is going on aboard the ship, but his wife won't believe him (because maybe he's hallucinating from the drugs you know). Basically, the captain of the ship is trying to woo her away from her husband. There is some good chemistry between the wife and the ship's captain, and I found that part of the movie to be pretty good. As far as the spiders, that whole plot line is almost an afterthought. About two thirds of the movie goes by without them even being involved. And the special effects aren't very special at all. They're pretty bad.

But, all in all, the plot kept me at least vaguely interested and the characters were really quite good. I'd watch it again if I was bored and there wasn't anything else on.

    1 out of 5 stars Really lousy.......2004-02-14

I haven't seen Spiders 1, so I can't compare it to its sequel, but for its sake I hope that the old saw about a sequel being worse than the original is true. Spiders 2 was awful. Terrible. Stupid. Poorly acted. Badly written. Unimaginative. Even badly lit.

Now, granted, a B (or C or D) movie like this isn't going to have a plot out of Shakespeare, but why not have a story that makes a modicum of sense? There are so many flaws I can't possibly enumerate them all, but here are a few: Spiders 2 takes place on a cargo ship containing a secret lab in which spider and human DNA has been combined--what better place than a ship rolling on the high seas to have a lab full of glassware for experimentation? Human DNA does nothing but make the spiders supersized, like a McDonald's Value Meal--there are no hideous human/spider creatures (think The Fly or Alien Resurrection), just big bugs. At the end of the movie a truly gigantic spider as wide as the entire ship and ten times larger than the human sized spiders we'd seen before emerges--where this beast could have been throughout the rest of the film we have no idea, and it does nothing more than go down with the ship. In the final scene, guys in the rescue helicopter drop a hand grenade down to the heroine, who's holding on to her husband with one hand, being pulled down by a giant spider on one leg, with the wash of the helicopter rotor affecting her from above and the motion of the sea on the crate the spider is in from below--and she catches it one handed. Sign the girl up as an outfielder in the big leagues! Even the shoes the heroine wears are stupid--she was rescued from a sailboat where she'd undoubtedly be wearing deck shoes, and we're told that she's the only woman on board so the clothes they give her will probably be too big for her (fortunately, they aren't, and the tank top she wears is quite fetching)--where did the pumps with two inch heels come from? Is the ship not only infested with giant spiders, but also drag queens? Hmm, come to think of it, that would have made a better movie. There are a few decent special effects, but some really awful ones. Frankly, much of the film looks like what my son did when he was about five years old, playing with his rubber toys.

The only two reasons to see this are if you think it's campy enough to be funny (maybe, especially if you're influenced by hallucinogenic substances, but remember, the drag queens were my idea) or if you've got the hots for Stephanie Niznik. She's a fox, but can't save the film for me. Better spend your money on Deep Rising, a terrific, scary, funny film with another gorgeous heroine.

I'm not saying you should BUY this, but it's good for a few laughs if you Netflix or Tivo it. The story draws you in just enough to stick around for the laughs. no real babes in this one if that's what you're after.

I didn't like this as much as the Shark Attack/Crocodile/Octopus movies, but I've rewatched it before. The only problem is that everything or almost everything in the trail is taken from the last 10-15 minutes of this movie.

3 out of 5 stars Bug Formula but Fun to Watch.......2005-01-29

This heart pounding movie has all the earmarks of 50's bug and monster movies with a few
modern conspiracy theories thrown in. The formula consisted of spiders, aliens whom the
government is hiding and denying their existence, good guy bad guy government agents, a
woman who takes foolish risks to save everyone she knows, and who violates every common
sense axiom with her actions. I knew the two nerds would get it. I knew the soldiers would get
it. I knew the woman (Lana Parilla) would survive along with the good guy agent (Josh Green).
I was hoping the head grunt would say to the bad guy agent, "not if I shoot you first." He ended
up in the spider pantry. What really got me was Parilla shooting down the giant spider with a
bazooka while swinging on a rope from the helicopter. I'm a crack shot and I doubt if I could
have done it. In spite of the hokeyness, I enjoyed the movie. It kept me on the edge of my seat
until the credits. What, no kiss for the hero? Well, the 50's are long gone.

5 out of 5 stars Nero Wolfe at his best.......2005-10-01

When I ordered this, I had no idea what to expect. An ample description was lacking, and the two reviews said little. The DVD turns out to be a movie-length Nero Wolfe starring the same wonderful cast that is featured on the Year One and Year Two DVDs: Maury Chaykin and Timothy Hutton, above all. This must have been an early program leading later to the series.

The story, script, acting, photography, and direction are splendid in every way. This easily equals the best of the episodes in the two series. Don't miss it.

4 out of 5 stars First in a Great Series.......2005-09-08

A&E picked this story first - perhaps because there is a little more action here than in many Nero Wolfe stories, and it better can be told visually.

In every Nero Wolfe book you get some exposition to Nero's moral code. Here, since a young boy ate at his table, Nero feels compelled to investigate his death.

It leads to a great story. On the morality point, though, Inspector Cramer gets something of a last word in: Of all the homicides Cramer has to investigate, the victim's class, status or dining at Wolfe's table plays no role. In so many stories, Cramer is intently curious about who Wolfe's client is; when he hears these circumstances, he gets even more angry than usual.

Which seems backwards, in a way: Wolfe appears to be acting altruistically, and Cramer gets mad at him for it. But, actually, Cramer's right: his job involves seeing a constant parade of injustice and depravity, and he does not have the luxury of picking his cases.

You gotta love Inspector Cramer for that...

Also, here we get Saul Rubinek playing Saul Panzer - and hamming it up a bit too much. He does a better Lon Cohen later in the series...
