Devoted Star Trek fans will surely cite the "even number" rule in evaluating the Original Crew Movie Collection, but all six of these films qualify as rousing entertainment. Undeniably, the even-numbered films in Paramount's lucrative Trek franchise tended to be the best, as demonstrated by the superiority of The Wrath of Khan, The Voyage Home, and The Undiscovered Country. And yet each film has something to offer die-hard Trekkers, beginning with the epic-scale wonders of the first Motion Picture (presented here as a two-disc special edition). Evolving from Gene Roddenberry's aborted attempt at a second Star Trek TV series, the effects-laden Motion Picture divided fans while proving that Star Trek had a promising big-screen future. Nicholas Meyer's The Wrath of Khan made good on that promise, reviving the Star Trek spirit and proving, in the case of Mr. Spock, that beloved characters "never really die." It's widely regarded as the best of these half-dozen features.

With its deadly Klingon confrontation, the Leonard Nimoy-directed Search for Spock was a thrilling (albeit contrived) excuse for Spock's inevitable resurrection, and its somber tone was readily countered by the Earth-based humor of Nimoy's The Voyage Home, combining a planetary crisis with a lively--and phenomenally popular--time-travel plot line. Unfortunately, William Shatner then lobbied for the director's chair, and The Final Frontier--an uneasy mixture of cheesy humor and grandiose themes--was the regrettable outcome. Paramount rallied by inviting Nicholas Meyer to repeat his Khan success, and Meyer rose to the occasion with the sharply scripted thrills of The Undiscovered Country. By ending the film with an official signature send-off from the "classic Trek" cast, the original crew brought their big-screen legacy to a graceful and upbeat conclusion, setting the stage for a transitional adventure in Star Trek: Generations. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Turn Off Your Mind, Relax...And Go Where No Man, etc........2007-06-16

This was an inpulse purchase. Short version of a long story, while wiki-ing the night away, one link led to another which led to Ebert's review of "The Voyage Home" (you know, the one with the whales). He liked it. Since it was 3:00 AM, logic was not a factor so I found this box-set on Amazon, and one-click later...

I have to say that although I was never much of a Star Trek fan, I ended up watching all 3 of the "arc" movies: Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, and Free Willy, I mean, Voyage Home. I enjoyed them all. They had the same old corny, humanistic, vaguely-mystical, always-swashbuckling appeal that made the original "Star Trek" series pleasant, albeit mindless, TV-viewing. And it is fun to see Montalban's plastic pecs (I don't buy his coy demurral that "everyone was in great shape".)

Unlike other space movies, like Stars Wars, let's say, these movies do not take themselves at all seriously, and therein lies their charm.

Caveat emptor: If you have seen these movies before, they do NOT improve with age. They are timeless...sort of like memories of childhood. The science is questionable...like "slinging" around the Sun to time-travel. Just don't think about it.

4 out of 5 stars Even numbered Star Trek movies don't suck.......2007-05-20

A lot of Star Trek was about dealing with Aliens;
communicating with people who are different in fundamental ways.
Today we get the feeling that the human race can't even communicate
with itself when it comes to science.
Science has clearly warned about extreme climate change
dangers ( very like those of the genesis planet in StartTrek III),
yet politicians, leaders of industry and those who are generally
getting rich from the rape of the planet Earth refuse
to substantially change their damaging behavior.
We keep contributing to the future's "plastic Layer"!
I think in Star Trek II with the genetically engineered
ego maniac shows us that humanity has a lot to learn
about itself!Star Trek IV is one of my all time favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Star Trek.......2007-02-02

The Star Trek movies are really great movies. I am very glad that I bought them.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for every fan of Star Trek.......2007-02-02

All 6 of the Original Crew movies all in one package. And the conversion to DVD...it's like watching completely new and better movies. Even Star Trek V is a better movie, and that's saying something. I especially liked the recut of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. All the added and improved scenes makes it an entirely new movie. Now it's more about the story, than showing off the new cool special effects of that time. Every fan of Trek needs to check these movies out and experience them all over again!

5 out of 5 stars Can't beat the Originals.......2007-01-27

The Original Crew Movie Collection is for all of you who grew up watching Star Trek: The Original Series. You know who your favorite characters are, and you don't need 4 extra movies from Rick Berman who has run the series into the ground. Don't believe me, believe the box office, Starting with 7, the Next Gen movies have steadily decreased in overall box office sales. Culminating with Nemesis that completely bombed at the theaters.

You know who the best crew is, and you don't mess with the best.

The Stephen King Collection, a box set of four films, Graveyard Shift, The Dead Zone, Silver Bullet, and Pet Sematary, is great in that it provides viewers with a full range of King movies, from the truly eerie to the terrible. The set's two finest movies, The Dead Zone, directed by David Cronenberg and starring Christopher Walken, and Pet Sematary--arguably King's finest story adapted to film--both come as Special Collector's Editions, with excellent bonus material, including lengthy interviews with both Stephen King and the directors. Pet Sematary, shot in King's home territory, Maine, tells the story of city slickers Rachel and Louis Creed (Denise Crosby, Dale Midkiff), who move to the country to raise their daughter, Ellen, in peace. They learn that they've relocated onto a trucking thoroughfare, and Ellen consequently loses her pet cat. The plot quickly riffs out into mystical, traumatic territory. Louis's neighbor Jud Crandall takes Louis to ancient Indian burial grounds, where the dead are reanimated. The Creeds's zombie cat sparks this Frankenstein-ian adventure, pitting urban settings against rural, and the horrific against the pastoral. Pet Sematary looks more and more like Hitchcock, thanks to director Mary Lambert's careful attention to detail. The low point in the set is Graveyard Shift, a washed-up story about a cotton factory that's not only infested by carnivorous rats, but also hosts a dragon/pterodactyl. As night-shift employees get continuously munched, Bachman Mills' owner Mr. Warwick is forced to clean up squalid conditions, for which he hires a basement clean-up crew. Crew members are slaughtered as they try to combat their discovered behemoth, and grizzly scenes showing rats, humans, and the beast's head being chewed up in the cotton gin reduce Graveyard Shift to schlock gore. One is reminded of the intricacies involved in adapting books to film. As King has managed to be an integral part of his film projects, there are still successes and failures. All the movies in this set, though, still bear King's trademark, a love for "supernatural deadfall." --Trinie Dalton

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good Collection of King Movies.......2007-03-19

Certainly, my opinion is subjective because I like this sort of fare, silly and all. "Graveyard Shift" is indeed the weakest one, made entertaining by the bad acting of all involved. "Pet Sematary" is also badly acted, though Fred Gwynne is on hand to save much of it. It's one of King's more mean-spirited plots, and if there was humor involved (as the extras purport), I missed most of it. "Silver Bullet" is an odd film, a rather sweet coming-of-age film with a twist. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. (Even Corey Haim was almost tolerable.) And, of course, the special edition of "The Dead Zone" stands way above the rest. Fine acting and direction help secure its place among the best King films. Save it for last...OK, some are silly and mindless, but I like most horror films for that very reason. This collection has the added benefit of a couple of winners. The widescreen transfer is excellent. The price is good. I recommend it...all 4 are true to King, inasmuch as they all take place in Maine.

4 out of 5 stars Two five star movies, one four star movie, and one stinker........2006-10-10

I give five stars for The Dead Zone and Silver Bullet. I give four stars to Pet Semetary. Zero stars go to Graveyard Shift. All in all, it is a good set that is worth the price for three of the films. Just buy it for The Dead Zone, Silver Bullet, and Pet Semetary.

5 out of 5 stars 3 Essential Dvd's for any 'True' Horror Fan............2003-08-11

These three films are definitive in the genre of horror, and have been borrowed from, and copied, inferiorly I might add, but as they say,you can't replace an original. All three of these films truly create the necessary 'mood' for horror, no lame jokes, no moments of levity, just that creepy feeling in the pit of your stomach. Watch these late at night, lights off, with your favorite girl or guy, and get ready to have the blood squeezed out of your arm, when they're terrified to death. 'The Howling' is probably the best werewolf film I've ever seen, next to 'American Werewolf in London'...unfortunately the Howling sequels are laughable, inferior trash. 'The Fog' directed by renound horror film meister, John Carpenter, follows a band of ghost pirates, who appear on the hundredth aniversary of their deaths to exact a little revenge on a small, sleepy town by the ocean. Right before they appear, the intended victim is surrounded by a dense fog, it's usually the last thing they see before the creatures make quick work of them. 'Carrie,' well if you haven't seen 'Carrie' then you're not from this planet. The re-make was okay, but nowhere near the original with John Travolta and Sissy Spacek. This film holds up well to moden times, although you may get a laugh from the horrendous clothing and dialogue of the times. What's unusual about this set, is that all there films are landmark horror films. Usually two are good, and one's lousy in these box sets, but not here.

5 out of 5 stars 5 STARS FOR ORIGINAL KONG.......2006-09-20

Finally available in a beautiful restored and remastered transfer from the best available elements, KING KONG, the single most requested title for DVD, is part of three title THE KING KONG COLLECTION). Besides the two-disc King Kong, there's Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young.

Kong co-writer/producer/director Merian C. Cooper's real life was a blue print for fictional big ape filmmaker Carl Denham. One of the features on the superb two-disc King Kong is a new TCM documentary on the legendary Kong creator Cooper. Adventurer, war hero, explorer, pilot, filmmaker and cinema-innovator, the daring and honorable Cooper survived multiple wartime plane crashes, was declared dead on two occasions and even pulled off a daring escape after being held prisoner for ten months in a Russian POW camp.

The other great extra is a new, extraordinary seven-part, two hour and 40 minute documentary on the making of Kong.

However you look at it, King Kong must be included among the most influential of American films.

This beautifully executed original tale is a monster movie, a fantasy, an adventure, a love story, a tragedy and an unparalleled thriller. Loaded with striking imagery, the innovative 1933 effects still have power to suspend disbelief. The film, packed with meaning, is religious, mythological, Jungian and insanely Freudian.

The restored print has the look of a fine Doré engraving. King Kong is a must have and perfect appetizer for Peter Jackson's overwrought, but stunning remake.

5 out of 5 stars Great price for a great product!.......2006-04-03

How can you go wrong buying all 3 great ape classics in one set? Anyone buying this set pretty much knows or has seen the movies but is looking for a nice nostalgia trip. This is it! The special features are great. Alot of info on how everything was animated and good shots of the actual models as well. This set also includes a great documentary of Merian C. Cooper and his visions. Highly recommended for a fan of the classics.

5 out of 5 stars King Kong collection.......2006-03-15

This collection is a must have. It was great to enjoy the classics again and to share them with my children.

5 out of 5 stars Kong alive and well.......2006-02-22

It's amazing how well this film has held up for over 70 years. The special effects although not as flashy as todays were very good. Just the right mix of horror and humor. Film makers today should watch and learn. Same kudos for Mr. Joseph Young.
