In the trinity of modern horror films, there's the father (Michael Myers of Halloween), the son (Jason of Friday the 13th fame, a knockoff), and the unholy spirit, Freddy Krueger of the Nightmare on Elm Street films. The spectral man who haunted the nightmares of unsuspecting teenagers with deadly consequences, Freddy (as played by Robert Englund) was a truly frightening bogeyman and icon for the '80s. Unlike the hockey-masked Jason, who dispatched horny teenagers with mechanical and monotonous ease (he never talked, never took off his mask), Freddy was a truly creative and diabolical villain, with a sadistic and blackly funny personality. The hallmarks of the Nightmare on Elm Street series were imaginatively gruesome suspense pieces, set in the overactive imaginations of the teen victims. The first film of the series, Wes Craven's truly intelligent and scary film, was so hugely successful it begat not one, not two, but six more sequels, each pretty much diluting the originality and horror of its predecesor. (Horror fans will fondly remember Drew Barrymore's assertion in Scream that the first Nightmare film was great but all the rest sucked.) Still, there's fun to be had in the remaining films in the series, seeing as a number of aspiring filmmakers cut their teeth on the continuing saga of Freddy. Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) and Chuck Russell (The Mask) worked on the third installment, Dream Warriors (starring a young Patricia Arquette), and Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2) came to prominence with the ingeniously macabre fourth film, The Dream Master, coscripted by Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential). Craven and original star Heather Langenkamp did return for the last film, New Nightmare, which presaged the tongue-in-cheek postmodernism of the Scream films and resharpened Freddy's ability to scare. --Mark Englehart

Simply Thrilling.......2007-05-13
Talk about good old fashion Horror Flicks. After so many years have passed, I still get chills up my spine seeing this classics.
the nightmare on elm street collection.......2007-05-13
this is a very cool dvd collection,it is not to scary and it has some funny parts and the best thing about it is that you can watch one part right after the other without having to go buy the next one.
A well deserved 5 stars with one exception..............2007-03-29
I'd like to start things off by saying that, in my opinion Freddy is the best slasher icon to appear in the '80s. In almost every film, the acting is superb, and the special f-x are exceptional for the time. There is not as much gore as the Friday the 13th series, but a little more than the Halloween series.
Nightmare on Elm Street: by far the best of the series in every way
10/10
Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge: by far the worst in the series 2/10
Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors: Not the best, but definitely not the worst 6/10
Nightmare on Elm Street 4: Dream Master: Better than the second and third 8/10
Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child: Not as good as the fourth: 7/10
Nightmare on Elm Street 6: Freddy's Dead: One of the better ones in the series besides the first and last one: 8/10
Wes Craven's New Nightmare: I'm so glad Wes Craven is back to give Freddy his frightening kick back: 9.5/10
This is my first review....

THE FIRST IS THE BEST THE BOX SET IS STILL A GOOD DEAL!.......2007-03-20
This is a good box set if your a fan of the series. I personally think that Jason is much scarier than Freddy. There are some creepy moments in the first nightmare, but after that they seem to get a little weird.

Better be a fan.......2007-06-25
Don't get me wrong I think it is great they are available on DVD, but there is some better stuff available and I would rather have two or three great instead of 50 okay. If you just want to see this then it may be worth the price and you can always donate it to the library or a vets organization. Personally I won't keep this set because my shelves are already full of DVDs I don't go back and watch regularly. What do you think will happen with 50 so-so movies? So unless you are a big fan of some of these movies, don't bother.
Peter Watkin's WAR GAME gem.......2007-06-05
The 1965 BBC nuclear war horror/docudrama THE WAR GAME is the gem buried in this Mill Creek comprise of 50 movies, entitled,NIGHTMARE WORLDS.Typical of other 12 double-sided DVD offerings in this series, the movies range from very good to bogus to the max(with most in range of what were once-called great Drive-in flicks).Peter Watkins'THE WAR GAME,however,is acknowledged masterpiece which so graphically presented aftermath of a "limited nuclear strike" against Great Britain(in mid-60's as consequence of escalation of crisis confrontation between formerly powerful NATO forces and now non-existent USSR)that was banned by BBC that initially oversaw its production. The film is on DISC 5/Side B. It's in very clear to very grainy BxW.It is 48 minutes long and is scary as hell.Scenes depicting MEDICAL TRIAGE of survivors;peremptory execution of violators of Martial Law(from food rioters to mob-killers of military & medical personnel);and the autistic state of thousands of children "hospitalized" in refugee camps, are staggering in impact."This is NUCLEAR WAR,"declares the narrator in classic,British understatement. It is Nightmare World,
indeed;well worth purchase of the other entertaining "thrillers" to view a TRUE and still possible cause in The ultimate in Global Warming...
Just My 2 cents worth.......2007-05-26
Pretty much what everyone else has said, it's a collection of wonderfully good & bad films, dating from the 1920s to the 1990s, some of the transers are fair to good, others are poor, but "worth every penny".
One complaint. Why do these comapnies insist on having their watermarks pop up ever 10-15 minutes for 20 seconds throughout the film? It's most annoying. And I buy DVDs to get away from that sort of thing. (And it's put me off buying any more from "Mill Creek"). And seriously apart from advertising it's pointless. My local community station shows films all the time where this happens. I'm assuming they just buy the boxed set and broadcast without clearance.
Only other disappointment with this set. One of the disc sleeves had the BBC documentary from the 1960's "War Games" listed. I got most excited. The film on the disc is "Flight 412". Sad.
Overall, worth getting.
50 Movies of Public Domain Goodness.......2007-04-18
Nightmare Worlds is a collection of 50 science fictionally oriented horror movies that have only one thing in common: they are all public domain and as such it is possible for them to be presented in highly affordable collections. I paid $21.99 for my set and that comes down to about 44 cents per movie. The way that movie tickets cost nowadays, you really cannot complain about this collection.

Amazon.com essential video
This simple but taut psychological thriller was the first full-length film from the great director Roman Polanski. A bickering couple pick up a hitchhiker, a good-looking young man whom they invite to go for a sail. But on the water the two men, separated by age, class, and experience, subtly and not-so-subtly jockey for status and fight for the attentions of the woman--a struggle that threatens to turn fatal. In Polanski's hands, this lean, spare movie, without any special effects or spectacular scenery, manages to lay bare the driving forces of machismo, envy, and marital spite. It's the beginning of a truly remarkable career that's ranged from the heights of Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown to the more dubious realms of Bitter Moon and The Ninth Gate. Knife in the Water is particularly significant to Polanski fans, but also a striking movie in its own right. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
a masterpiece of understated fear and suspense.......2007-04-16
Proof that the best of what movies can do to an audience depends not on beautiful faces in closeup, or lavish production, or even bright dialogue. You could watch "Knife in the Water" in Polish without any subtitles and still get chills. A young, privileged couple pick up a hitchhiker and take him out on their boat for the day. That's it. The rest is the suspense that builds between the three, especially between the two men, almost destined by biology and the nature of confined spaces to fight it out over the girl, at least symbolically, if not literally, to the death. Certainly the best Polanski film I've ever seen, one of my ten favorite movies of all time.
Roman's Spring.......2007-02-20
The first Polish film to be nominated for a Foreign Language Oscar, Roman Polanski's "Knife in the Water" is one of the most impressive director's debuts I've seen.
The story is simple. A wealthy couple on its way to spend a weekend on their yacht picks up a young and attractive hitchhiker. The middle-aged husband, a successful and cynical sportswriter invites the young man on board, perhaps to show off his nice yacht, his seamanship, and eventually, his superiority. His young and sexy wife does not say much but as the yacht moves along and tension between two men rises, she seems to enjoy the presence of a passenger and the obvious competition between them for her attention.
Made of the very simple material, the film is a brilliant psychological thriller that shows the young writer-director's extraordinary ability to create menace on the screen throughout the profound study of the characters' deep hidden emotions. Not as widely known as "Chinatown" and "Rosemary's Baby", "Knife in the Water" is the perfect introduction to the work of the director whose craft in creating disturbing studies of anger, humiliation, fear, and sexuality is truly remarkable.
A tension-filling war of wills .......2006-02-02
A married couple (played by Leon Niemczyk and Jolanta Umecka) on their way to the harbor and a yachting outing pick up a young hitchhiker (Zygmunt Malanowicz). From then on the two men engage each other in a childish but brutal war of wills, as each tries to outbully the other. Malanowicz joins the couple on their yacht and near the end falls overboard; when he doesn't surface Niemczyk dives in after him. A short while later Malanowicz re-emerges, hops back on board, and makes love with Umecka. Niemczyk and Umecka later confront each other with some upsetting truths about the incident.
This was Roman Polanski's first feature film, and it reveals what a master he was already; he knows exactly how to build the tension between Niemczyk and Malanowicz, heightening it ever more by having Umecka, who doesn't say or do much, always in the picture prancing around in her bikini or short sun dresses: the sexual tension is intense. Polanski's use of symbols - the knife, the pole, the wind directing the boat this way and that - is also masterful. Some think this is Polanski's best movie or that he never made better movies once he came to America, but they must be forgetting CHINATOWN. The second disc of short features is okay, but not up to the feature film.
The conflicted male ego.......2005-11-24
"Knife in the Water", an early Roman Polanski effort is a simple, unfettered yet analytical probe of the human condition. Filmed principally aboard a sailboat in the lake region of northern Poland the film examines the potentially explosive interactions between three people confined in this restricted setting.
A squabbling couple pick up a young hitchhiker on their way to the marina where they are about to embark on a weekend sailing trip. The husband an arrogant, bourgeoise writer Andrzej decides to invite the young man along for reasons that will soon become apparent. The hitchhiker, a landlubber is initially ill at ease on the water. The wife Krystyna is sympathetic to his plight. Andrzej however uses this as a wedge to commence berating the boy to help evoke within himself feelings of superiority.
The drama continues with the writer putting down the boy to bolster his own ego in front of his wife. A storm hits and the group in forced below decks where the confrontation continues and threatens to erupt in violence.
Ultimately the plot reaches a climax when the writer throws the boys treasured knife into the water causing the boy, who could not swim, to dive in after it and apparently drown.
Polanski using a cast of only three demonstrates his immense skill in fabricating a taut drama with a nicely conceived plot and very decent cinematography on a shoestring budget.
Polanski gets off to a slow start.......2005-11-13
A college professor and his young wife pick up a handsome hitchhiker and bring him along for a weekend of sailing. The couple is not a happy one, and the overbearing husband, irritated at his spouse's admiration of the young hitchhiker's beauty, apparently feels the need to dominate him as well. What follows is a subtle jockeying for position (not the "thriller" it is advertised to be) that was somewhat interesting but not terribly involving. If you love sailing, you may be the ideal audience for this film. The actors appear to be sailors and director Roman Polanski (in his first film) gives us lots of wide, unbroken takes of the characters controlling the boat.
Like many other reviewers, I was also annoyed by the disabling of several functions of the DVD player. Unless you are quite sure that you will love this film, I recommend that you avoid the annoyance of dealing with this disk.

Description
Justin Theroux is Daniel Beckett, the black sheep son of a wealthy New York art dealer. He and his girlfriend, Suzanne (Alyssa Milano), are meeting his family for Thanksgiving at their sprawling country estate. During dinner, Daniel's domineering father informs him he must join the family business or be cut off from their vast wealth. Daniel and Suzanne retreat downstairs to the basement when... ...screams and gunfire erupt from above! A band of murderous thieves, lead by Jim (Ice T), has entered the house and is killing off Daniel's family. Knowing that the only way to survive is to take the offensive and fight back, Daniel and Suzanne eliminate the killers one by one. With the body count rising, a shocking twist to this deadly game of cat and mouse proves that blood isn't always thicker than water.

Alyssa Milano is Hot!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-01-28
This movie was one of the best Alyssa Milano movies ever! It was brilliant. The acting was brilliant which I would expect from Alyssa but I was glad to see that the other actors didnt let her down. If you havnt bought this movie yet I strongly advise you do. And as the other reviews have said the twists that occur the whole way through will suprise you even the second or third time you watch it!
Justin Theroux is amazing.......2004-10-30
In Body Count, Alyssa Milano and Ice-T act well and blah blah blah, but Justin Theroux steals the show. When you watch the movie, you will be entranced and amazed by the twist ending. BUY THIS MOVIE!
NICE LITTLE ACTION FILM WITH A CLEVER ENDING.......2003-09-08
DANIEL [JUSTIN THEROUX], WITH HIS GIRLFRIEND [ALYSSA MILANO] VISITS HIS FAMILY FOR THANKSGIVING. BUT DURING DINNER, A VICIOUS GANG OF THIEVES [LED BY ICE-T] BREAK INTO THE HOUSE, KILL OFF DANIEL'S FAMILY, AND STEALS HIS FAMILY'S ART. BEING THAT DANIEL AND HIS GIRLFRIEND ARE TRAPPED IN THE BASEMENT, THEY MUST FIND A WAY TO ELIMINATE THE KILLERS. NOTHING SPECIAL, BUT IT'S AN OK LITTLE ACTIONER. WHAT HAPPENS IN THE END IS TRULY SHOCKING.
Body Count Is A Great Suspence and Action Film........2002-02-10
I rented this movie and I thought it was one of the best movies that I had ever seen. It's a great action film with an all-star cast that keeps wondering what's going to happen next. It is definitely one that I have to add to my movie collection.

Bloody Disgusting Web Site Review.......2004-09-15
After I reviewed 'Fangoria's Blood Drive' DVD short collection I got some crap from people saying I didn't know what I was talking about, well here's my freaking proof! Enigma Films and Creature-Corner got together to bring you GOOD horror shorts on a DVD collection called The Nightmare Collection that will actually make you feel proud that you spent your hard earned money on it.
In my review for 'Fangoria's Blood Drive' I pointed out that there were so many good horror shorts out there, that I didn't know why in gods name they chose what they chose. One example I gave was My Skin (review), which I said deserved to be on a DVD of that caliber. Well guess what? 'My Skin' is the first short on the 'Nightmare Collection'- what a great way to kick off five shorts! In the short film 'My skin,' which runs about 12 minutes, Death flies in to collect the soul of a murdered young woman, but first takes revenge on her killer. After replacing all of the incriminating evidence - the bullets, the smoking gun, even the murderer's fingerprints - Death takes a moment to place a very special phone call. Here the supernatural vengeance truly begins. You can read my review of the film at the link above, there's no point in typing it again.
The next three films were OK, but it's worth the wait because the fifth is mega-awesome! The second film was called Monster and it was a modern day retelling of the 'Frankenstein' legend. I wasn't a huge fan of the short as a whole, I was bored during most of it, but I enjoyed the jack-assy fun over-acting. I hope it was their intention, because it's great! The Frankenstein monsters FX were done really well, and there is a decent amount of blood for you gore hounds out there.
The third film was called Bad Company, which was about two psychopaths on the road killing people. They stop a guy in the road and highjack his car- and of course there's a twist, which if you can't figure out, then you don't watch enough horror movies. This was my least fav of the five movies because of its lack of creativity, but once again I enjoyed the acting performances. The movie is cut and dry and when it was over, it didn't do much of anything for me.
The Wretched was the fourth short, which went by incredibly fast. This short was more art than film, as a man awakens in a prison and tries to escape while flashbacks tell the story of how he got there. The FX was astounding for an independent film, but there was little to no dialogue and it's pretty boring. The twist at the end was cool, but not cool enough to make me want to ever watch it again.
Which brings me to Don't Worry, it's Only Your Imagination, which was by far the most damn cool horror short I've seen in a long time- even though it wasn't that short. 'Don't Worry' follows a repair man for a group of houses who is sent to one in order to clean up after a grizzly death. There's mold everywhere and the stench of dirt- and of course death. We find out that the same repairman found the dead body of the man who died there and he really doesn't want to stick around. Weird 'clues' start popping up about his death as he cleans and he gets stuck at the house while a storm strikes. As these clues build up, he starts hallucinating and getting really scared of the dark. The reasons he is so scared is apparent when you see the film. So when he freaks out and wants to leave the house he can't because it's pitch black outside and there's light in the house. The story evolves slowly, but perfectly, as it builds character and creates the perfect environment for some serious scares. The FX work on this movie kicks major ass as well and the fact that the short was shot in black and white just adds to the eeriness of it all (I'm a sucker for black and white films). The conclusion was a given once the structure was set, but when you've got such great build and environment, who gives a fu*&?
Between 'Don't Worry' and 'My Skin' there is no reason why you shouldn't pick this up, I can't wait to show my friends 'Don't Worry' because it was so rad. The DVD is loaded with extras, but nothing really worth watching and Necro Nancy's introductions were kind of ultra-cheesy, but so was the DVD. I would highly recommend picking this up if you've got some cash to spare, it beats wasting your money on some of those craptacular big budget Hollywood movies.
