The folks at Pixar can do no wrong with Monsters, Inc., the studio's fourth feature film, which stretches the computer animation format in terms of both technical complexity and emotional impact. The giant, blue-furred James P. "Sulley" Sullivan (wonderfully voiced by John Goodman) is a scare-monster extraordinaire in the hidden world of Monstropolis, where the scaring of kids is an imperative in order to keep the entire city running. Beyond the competition to be the best at the business, Sullivan and his assistant, the one-eyed Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), discover what happens when the real world interacts with theirs in the form of a 2-year-old baby girl dubbed "Boo," who accidentally sneaks into the monster world with Sulley one night. Director Pete Doctor and codirectors David Silverman and Lee Unkrich follow the Pixar (Toy Story) blueprint with an imaginative scenario, fun characters, and ace comic timing. By the last heart-tugging shot, kids may never look at monsters the same, nor artists at what computer animation can do in the hands of magicians. --Doug Thomas
Description
From the Academy Award(R)-winning creators of TOY STORY comes the computer-animated film that captured the hearts of fans and critics everywhere. MONSTERS, INC., is "visually dazzling, action-packed, and hilarious" (Boston Herald), featuring groundbreaking animation, imaginative storytelling, and unforgettable voice talent. John Goodman stars as the lovable James P. Sullivan (Sulley) and Billy Crystal as his wisecracking best friend, Mike Wazowski. Top scarer Sulley and his enthusiastic Scare Assistant Mike work at Monsters, Inc., the largest scream-processing factory in Monstropolis. The main power source of the monster world is the collected screams of human children. Monsters believe children are dangerous and toxic, however, and they are scared silly when a little girl wanders into their world. Sulley and Mike do their best to return the girl home, but they face monstrous intrigue and some hilarious misadventures along the way. MONSTERS, INC., is "supremely clever -- fun for kids and adults alike" (CBS-TV). Treat yourself to the most entertaining movie of the year with all-new exclusive bonus features and animation for monster laughs and monster fun.
Customer Reviews:
Wish there were a sequel!.......2007-06-28
It was that good! Unfortunately they didn't leave a door open for a sequel. Great story about the Monsters all little kids fear in their bed at night, and their interaction with those kids. It gives you the persepective from the other side of your closet door where the Monsters live. The characters are very lovable. Great, great comedy sequences, you will be laughing out loud! Unique story line. "Loving" out-come. Enjoy!
WOW!! What a great movie.. This movie should live on FOREVER!!!.......2007-06-22
This movie was great and it was really enjoyable and funny. I have had this movie since it came out as I went to see it in the movie theater. This would be my favorite movie of all time. Sulley(James P. Sullivan) and Mike Wazowski (the main characters of this movie) are my favorite characters in this movie and are my two favorite characters in any movie. Randall Boggs would be my third favorite character in the movie because he makes me LAUGH!! But he gets destroyed into a trailor during my favorite part of the movie which is when Mike and Sulley are hanging or flying on doors to try to get Boo home. Boo is my least favorite character in this movie because she CRIES a lot during the movie and just not my favorite. Celia, who Mike is in love with isn't all that great too. But I think Roz is great. She makes me laugh when she tells Mike that he didn't turn in his paperwork. and Mr. Waternoose would be my 5th and last most favorite character in this movie till he gets arrested by the CDA. Also, the part where Mike and Sulley go to Himalayas is great because they're in a BLIZZARD!! The worst part of the movie is when Sulley and Mike take Boo home that's when I feel to cry. But overall, this is a really great movie which I wish I could give this 10 stars. Please get this movie but Shrek s$cked!!!
Best film of the year.
Power-ful Kiddie Entertainment.......2007-06-21
Some of the best stories for children have presented their worst fears only to have the menace brought down to size. "Jack and the Beanstalk" works that way perfectly. 'Monsters, Inc.' helps to tuck the kiddies in and give them the giggles, too. Taking near day-glow colors, the Monsters in this fluid Pixar picture are hideously cute. They live in a "green" world where the renewable resource of children's fright powers the Monster community. Looking like the sorts in (Lucas Films, Ltd. is credited here) a 'Star Wars' bar scene, the film's focus is on the power company where the employees go through magic doors, their portals to children's bedrooms where the fright factor generates their power plant.
Heading the troops is big blue "Sully" (John Goodman) a good natured monster, proud of his ability to be the equivalent of "Employee of the Month". Keeping track of his generating power, he is out to set a plant record. His green, one-eyed sidekick, Mike Wazowski, (Billy Crystal) has a Martian appearance, but his voice couldn't scare a mouse. He is smitten by one-eyed purple princess, Shroopsy with hydra hair (snake braids). They all face their competition with rascally Randall, (perfectly villainous, Steve Buscemi) the salamander-like monster with invisible capabilities. Pivotal to the plot is Mr. Waternoose, (James Coburn) a tycoon who resembles a tarantula in a three-piece suit. In the causality is 'Silkwood'-like contamination if any child or remnant remains in the Monster world. (In other words: Just like parents often say about insects or some animals: "They're more afraid of [children], than [they] are of them.") Sully and James come across "Boo" whom they find in their best interests to return to the dark realm of her own bedroom.
Formidable to the fore, 'Monsters,..." takes a premise that could have been a dumb non-starter, and provides supporting plot structures with enough heft to turn the adventure on. With Pixar animation, the movement is flowing enough to take the technological edge off the look, and Andrew Stanton and Daniel Gerson's screenplay keep the dialogue fresh and funny. Director Pete Docter gives the movie proper assembly. 'Monsters, Inc.' is therapeutically good for children's dreamscapes as well as their funny bones. (Highly recommended to rent and to own.)
Pixar Created A Classic!.......2007-06-14
Monsters Inc is a great piece that your family will love! Loveable monsters are brought to life and make you laugh a lot! Laughter is more powerful than screams you know. A loveable classic for any collection!
Great movie.......2007-06-13
Hey it's Mike,
Wow!! What a great movie this is. This is by far my favorite movie due to the presence of Mike and Sulley. There is not a lot of great movies out there, but this one is one of the very best!! Sulley, Mike, Randall, Roz, and Waternoose are all great characters and 3 of them are really funny! Boo and Celia are my two least favorite characters in the film. The best part of this movie is the Flying on Doors part where Randall gets destroyed.
The end is the saddest part of the movie when Sulley and Mike take Boo home.
Well this movie is the best as I wish that I can give this much more than 5 stars like a million stars. Please buy.

Jody is the kind of guy that every 1970s teen looked up to. He's in his early 20s, has a cool car, splendid '70s hair, leather jacket, plays guitar and (naturally) snags all the girls. His little brother, Mike, in particular, admires him and emulates him at every turn. Things start to go astray, however, when the two brothers and their friend Reggie attend a funeral for a friend. Mike notices a tall man working at the funeral home; in the course of his snooping, he sees the tall man put a loaded coffin into the back of a hearse as easily as if it was a shoebox. Jody doesn't believe his little brother's stories, though, until he brings home the tall man's severed finger, still wriggling in what appears to be French's mustard. From there, the film picks up a terrific momentum that doesn't let up until the sequel-ripe twist ending.
Phantasm was one of the first horror movies to break the unspoken rule that victims were supposed to scream, fall down, and cower until they were killed. Instead, Mike and Jody are resourceful and smart, aggressively pursuing the evil inside the funeral home with a shotgun and Colt pistol. Furthermore, the script has a great deal of character development, especially in the relationship between the two brothers. The film even has a surprisingly glossy look, despite its low-budget origins, and little outright gore (except for the infamous steel spheres that drill into victims' heads). This drive-in favorite was a big success at the time of its release, and spawned three sequels. Little wonder; it includes an inventive story, likable characters, a runaway pace, and, of course, evil dwarves cloaked in Army blankets. The end result is one of the better horror films of the late 1970s. Hot-rod fans take note: Jody drives a Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda, the pinnacle of 1960s muscle cars, rounding out his status as a Cool Guy. --Jerry Renshaw

Phantasm is a classic !.......2007-07-04
Phantasm is a classic! I loved this film. I wish they could add the footage from Phantasm 4 with all those deleted/left out scenes and put it back in the first!! That would be awesome!
Interesting but not scary.......2007-06-19
Plot: A kid on a bike, his brother and a funeral home. Then a tall man whos turnin people into some kind of demons or slaves. It had somewhat of an atmosphere to it but this wasnt that great. I mean it was boring, long, and the ending made no sense at all. Low budget dosent have to mean bad but this one was close to it. It kept me watchin till the end hoping something good would happen but it ultimately disapointed. They 'overdid' the music. I was watchin the scenes and it was that continuous loud score playing over and over. I guess it was for the 70s but far from the best horror movie.
you play a good game, boy..........2007-06-01
Oh, the fond memories of watching an old, worn-out, crackling VHS tape of dubious origin, in a dark garage-turned-creepy-livingroom, on an aging TV. This remains one of the scariest and coolest horror films I've ever seen, despite some issues with effects.
One of my major horror movie gripes has to do with the color and consistency of blood--I know that's a relatively minor quibble to some, but to me it's an important aspect. The blood in this movie is too red and has the opaque appearance of latex paint. The yellow fluid that the Tall Man bleeds also has this quality. My circle has always referred to it as "banana pudding". But, this is one of the few films wherein the blood thing doesn't take me out of the moment at all.
The first sentinel sphere death scene is dramatic, and the Tall Man is nothing short of iconic. Sound and silence are used to great effect, and the score is awesome. The film also captures a unique period in history, the strange transition from the '70s to the '80s, which adds to the bizarre atmosphere. Goofy hairstyles, characteristic over-the-top slasher effects and a dash of self-effacing camp. Fun!
I'm glad to see this released on DVD, finally, and with lots of great extras. What a treat! It's a shame it took so long. The last time I saw this film, I was about 13, and was afraid that, like so many other half-forgotten old favorites, it wouldn't stand up to the test of time. Well, glad to say I was proven wrong. So horribly wrong.
Phantasm is just a cool, fun, undeniably creepy film that captures a unique snapshot of a particular era in the history of horror movies, and certainly deserves a place on anybody's shelf. Cock your quad-barrel shotgun and bust out the banana pudding, it's time to break some balls.
phantastic philm!.......2007-05-14
OK so now that I've annoyed you with really bad phonetic jokes....for the brave few willing to get past that obvious mark of bad taste....phantasm is a truly unique addition to any horror fans library. i remember first seeing the film many years ago and the starkness and eerie quite of the mausoleum is something that has always stayed with me. the flying orbs are a great vehicle for terror. If you are new to Don Coscarelli's movies I hope this will encourage you to check out the sequels to Phantasm and of course the mighty Bubba-Hotep! (Long live the king!) The movie has a great balance of drama and good old 70's cheese (not over the top in my opinion....just enough to make you sit back and smile). After all when was the last time an aging ice cream vendor with pattern baldness was a hero!!? All kidding aside though, as a pretty avid horror movie junkie, and a fan that looks for really good horror films that continue to stand the test of time....this is one of them!
David Lynch Forever.......2007-05-13
This book is a mixture of interviews and an overview of Mr. Lynch's career. I'll be the first to admit that he's not the best at interviews. He gives none of the magic of hios movies away. Which I for one think is a good thing.
Out of all the books on the subject, this is the best.

This cute movie by William Dear stars John Lithgow as a family man who befriends a Sasquatch (a.k.a. Bigfoot) and brings the friendly monster's oversized, hairy self into his Seattle home. Mayhem and comedy ensue, but things take a heavier turn when a hunter (David Suchet) gets on the creature's trail. Everything hinges on the relationship between Lithgow's character and Harry (the Sasquatch), and that relationship is really quite effective and touching. Don Ameche is a hoot as an old guy who has dreamed of meeting Bigfoot all his life and finally gets the glorious chance. --Tom Keogh
Description
John Lithgow takes adventure to new heights in this big-laughs, big-hearted, big-footed comedy for the whole family! A chance car accident introduces the Hendersons to the real-life Bigfoot, who is anything but a ferocious monster and quickly becomes a true friend to the family. They're soon in a race against the clock to return "Harry" to his natural environment before the authorities capture him. The fur will fly in this feel-good romp - an Oscar winner for Best Makeup - the whole family will enjoy again and again!
Customer Reviews:
Great Family Fun.......2007-06-27
I had seen this movie many times when I was a kid and always loved it. "Harry" is great family movie full of Hilarious scenes that will make you laugh out loud! It asks the question "What is Bigfoot really existed?". Would he be able to be seen as a gentle beast? Great for children as it shows that all "animals" aren't mean and nasty and don't deserve to be killed just because we can. If you are looking for a movie with great laughs for kids and adults alike then see "Harry and the Hendersons" I believe it is a movie everyone can enjoy!
Harry and the Hendersons .......2007-06-02
Nice liitle movie about a 'fictional' character set in the Seattle area .
Great fun for the whole family .... and you get to see John Lithgow with more hair (funny how we lose our cranial covering and then it migrates to other parts of the body ) and Melinda Dillon fresh from closeEncounters of the 3rd kind .
Don Ameche is wonderful.
Something to let all kids watch ...reminds me of the best 'Disney' stuff when I was a kid .
Don't Miss This Movie.......2007-05-31
It was great to revisit a movie I have always loved. Many people have been searching for a release of this movie and now it has finally come to DVD. The "extras" are mostly promotional material that supported the movies original release so don't expect much there, but the movie itself is awesome!
Once upon a time with Harry .......2007-05-30
Great for children and adults, this movie can be watched over and over again. Enjoy the comedy and the imaginative creation of Harry.
Bigfoot, Bigheart....and a BiggerMind than you might think.......2007-05-26
This is one of the best family movies ever made!! I don't know why it wasn't a big hit??!?!! If you haven't seen this movie yet, especially if you're into bigfoot but, even if your not....you must see it. I believe that having an open mind and an open heart is important and this movie helps people see how, why and what the results might be. Give yourself over to the big guy.....heck, I'd let him stay with me....well for a little while. Great family fun and adventure can't be found like this in modern movies; Harry and the Hendersons has real heart and one of my favorite performances by John Lithgow. The cast is a great combination of very gifted actors who gave great performances that should have been recognized as such and really haven't been. Buy it! Buy it! Buy it!

Wolfgang Petersen (In the Line of Fire) made his first English-language film with this 1984 fantasy about a boy (Barret Oliver) visualizing the stories of a book he's reading. The imagined tale involves another boy, a warrior (Noah Hathaway), and his efforts to save the empire of Fantasia from a nemesis called the Nothing. Whether or not the scenario sticks in the memory, what does linger are the unique effects, which are not quite like anything else. Plenty of good fairy-tale characters and memorable scenes, and the film even encourages kids to read. --Tom Keogh

A wonderful adventure re-visited.......2007-06-04
The wonderful adventure of Bastion on the never ending story was my favorite movie when it was released many years ago. I now have the opportunity to enjoy it all over again with my 5 year old. She is particularly intrigued by the Luck Dragon and wants one. Don't we all.
Enjoy this movie as a family.
Sound recording is a bit poor but I guess it was pre digital and has alot of back ground hiss.
Such a sweet movie.......2007-05-17
I bought this b/c I used to watch it all the time when I was a kid. I loved it, and would watch it over and over again. Thing is, I looked around on Amazon, and this movie comes in a set w/ Part 2 and 3. That is where the value is, so look around. You can get 2 movies for the price of one.
If you don't own this movie, ADD IT TO YOUR CART today :)

My Neighbor Totoro is that rare delight, a family film that appeals to children and adults alike. While their mother is in the hospital, 10-year-old Satsuki and 4-year-old Mei move into an old-fashioned house in the country with their professor father. At the foot of an enormous camphor tree, Mei discovers the nest of King Totoro, a giant forest spirit who resembles an enormous bunny rabbit. Mei and Satsuki learn that Totoro makes the trees grow, and when he flies over the countryside or roars in his thunderous voice, the winds blow. Totoro becomes the protector of the two sisters, watching over them when they wait for their father, and carrying them over the forests on an enchanted journey. When the children worry about their mother, Totoro sends them to visit her via a Catbus, a magical, multilegged creature with a grin the Cheshire Cat might envy.
Unlike many cartoon children, Satsuki and Mei are neither smart-alecky nor cloyingly saccharine. They are credible kids: bright, energetic, silly, helpful, and occasionally impatient. Filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki makes the viewer believe the two sisters love each other in a way no American feature has ever achieved. My Neighbor Totoro is enormously popular in Japan, and some of the character merchandise has begun to appear in America. The film has also inspired a Japanese environmental group to buy a Totoro Forest preserve in the Saitama Prefecture, where Miyazaki's film is set. --Charles Solomon

Customer Reviews:
Massively overrated.......2007-07-05
I heard such glowing things about this but when I finally rented and watched it, I was bored out of my mind. Perhaps it means something in the context of Japanese folklore that I missed, but for its own sake it's not particularly clever (reminds me of _Through the Looking Glass_ only far less complex). I don't care about the dubbing; it could be silent and the story would still be uninteresting.
I'm not a dedicated anime fan--I don't care who does the animation or in what style as long as the story is there--but I agree that the animation is really lovely.
Why would they do somethig like this?.......2007-07-02
A long time ago me and my family sat down and watched the original dub of My Neighbor Totoro. We were completly blown away. It became one of our all time favorite movies. It was so amazing, so different from anything we had ever seen. My little sister fell completely in love with it, and watched it whenever she had a chance.
When we saw this new special two-disk, digitally remastered set was relesed we didn't wait for a second to buy it. We popped it into the DVD player completely enthralled. We got about ten minutes into the movie before turning it off in complete disbelief and anger.
I can't understand why they would do something like this. Why would they take an amazing, wonderful piece of art and smash it into pieces? I have nothing against Dakota Fanning or her little sister, but their voice performances were NOTHING compared to the original. You get a COMPLETLY different experience watching this new version. I just couldn't understand why they would do something like this. The least they could have done was include the original dubbing, instead of leaving you to choose between a complete insult to Miyazaki or the japanese voices.
Why!?.......2007-06-28
Back last year (2006) I found the "Fox" release of this AMAZING movie in the $7.99 bin at a walmart. I grew up watching Totoro with my grandma and watching it in all its original glory was really touching. Then I loaned it to a friend who won't give it back. Needless to say, I bought the Disney "remastered" version 2 disc thing for a whopping $25 and I have to say... IM SO DISSAPOINTED! Why oh WHY did they think re-dubbing the voices was needed? I dispise the new dub. Its an abomination and insults the original. If you've seen the original, DO NOT BUY THIS. You will be devistated w/ Dakota & Elle Fannings voice acting. At times I even muted it because it was just so far from the original. If you can get your hands on the "Fox" release of the movie... DO. However, if you have never seen this movie or have young kids who havn't, I would say get it because even tho I know it super sucks, you won't cause you don't have anything to judge it against. As for me... Disney, you have truly left me heartbroken.
The Magic of Family.......2007-06-27
This heart warming Anime is full of the love of family and how understanding adults can bring out the best in their children. While magic and fantasy fill this movie, there is also a great role model for how a family should be.
Very good kid's movie.......2007-06-27
The movie captured kids behaviour very well. The characters are adorable. All our family loves it.

Creature Comforts is a brilliant and hilarious clay animation series about the lives of animals as told by the animals themselves. Interviews with these lovable claymation creatures leave no stone unturned, no tree unclimbed, no sea uncrossed in the quest to discover what our fine-finned, furred and feathered friends really think about the issues that are closest to their hearts. It's a "mockumentary" like none you've ever seen, and it could only come from Nick Park and the untamed minds at Aardman Animation.

Not as funny as the US show.......2007-07-05
If you have watched and enjoyed the US version of this show you are likely to not find the English show to be as funny as I think a lot of the humor in it is culturally related. Cute idea though and certainly entertaining.
FOR GROWN UPS.......2007-06-14
I've been a fan of these "Claymation" animated presentations since 1990 when the feature movie called "Creature Comfort" won the Academy Award' in it's category. The "brains' behind that feature have gone on to do a television series, by the same name (except now the title is plural), of which this two DVD presentation is seasons one and two that contains a host of "new" characters. The creators of "Creature Comforts" the series continue the most hilarious tradition that they started with the original feature movie. My god, these series are so darn funny. I feel that it is indeed "cartoons" for "Grown ups"as were many of the "Looney Tunes" cartoons. Kids, of course, can enjoy them too; however, to me, it takes some real "life experience" to fully appreciate the humor therein because it, for the most part, is rather subtle.
This series posses questions that most of us face every day to hilariously animated animals that are made of clay. These clay cartoon characters answer these questions (some rather serious ones) using (of course, supplied by wonderful actors) accents (British, American, Spanish, etc.) .that are hysterical. In addition, to these question and answer sketches there is usually something very funny going on in the background. Therefore, one gets more and more out of each sketch upon multiple viewings. Some of the questions posed and answered couldn't be with human subjects because some sketches do border on the "politically incorrect".
Above all these series are extremely funny. Therefore, if you want a really good laugh buy these DVDs.
creature comforts 1st & 2nd season.......2007-06-13

Jim Henson's fantasy epic The Dark Crystal doesn't take place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, but like Star Wars it takes the audience to a place that exists only in the imagination and, for an hour and a half, on the screen. Recalling the worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien, Henson tells the story of a race of grotesque birdlike lizards called the Skeksis, gnomish dragons who rule their fantastic planet with an iron claw. A prophecy tells of a Gelfling (a small elfin being) who will topple their empire, so in their reign of terror they have exterminated the race, or so they think. The orphan Jen, raised in solitude by a race of peace-loving wizards called the Mystics, embarks on a quest to find the missing shard of the Dark Crystal (which gives the Skeksis their power) and restore the balance of the universe. Henson and codirector Frank Oz have pushed puppetry into a new direction: traditional puppets, marionettes, giant bodysuits, and mechanical constructions are mixed seamlessly in a fantasy world of towering castles, simple huts, dank caves, a giant clockwork observatory, and a magnificent landscape that seem to have leaped off the pages of a storybook. Muppet fans will recognize many of the voice actors--a few characters sound awfully close to familiar comic creations--but otherwise it's a completely alien world made familiar by a mythic quest that resonates through stories over the ages. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Reviews:
Oldies.......2007-06-27
This movie I bought because I had never seen it. If you don't mind squaking bird sounds and nails on a chalkboard- than go for it. I had a headache half way through. This movie has more noise than dialogue.
The Dark Crystal.......2007-06-15
There are 10 Skekses left in the world. This cruel, violent species's emporer is dying. There are 10 Mystics left in the world. The wisest Mysitc is dying. When the Mystic leader (the dying one) was younger he rescued a Gelfling from a Skekses raid (there were more of each species back then) and dubbed him Jem. The Mystics taught him everything - except the prophecy (IF YOU TRY TO STOP A PROPHECY IN A MOVIE YOU WILL FAIL, PERIOD.) The prophecy said that if a Gelfling does not repair the Crystal, located in the Crystal Castle, before the 3 suns lined up the world will be plunged into a time of evil forever. Skekses send bug-monsters to catch and kill Jem. Jem goes to the ugly witch Olgra to get the shard which came off. As he turns to leave, the bug-monster things attack Olgra's dome-house. Then they carry off Olgra, but she turns out not to be a Gelfling, let alone Jem. Jem is running for dear life. Then this puffball dog thing growls at him. A girl Gelfling comes out and says something to the puffball, who shuts up. It turns out that the Pod People had saved HER from the SAME raid. Love love lovie dovie. Jem goes to the Pod People with Kira, but then the bugs attack again, and carry off the Pod People, who also turn out not to be Gelflings. Then the bugs actually almost get them, but Kira grabs Jem and flies down a handy cliff. Jem says that he doen't have wings, but Kira replies that, of course not, he's a BOY! Then a Skekse gets banished, and says NOT to repair the Crystal, because they didn't need to, no, they could just live out here forever. Jem thwacks him, and Skekse gets cut.
Although the characters are Muppets, there are no real jokes. Plenty of adventure. So good, my critical-of-every-detail dad watched it twice a day for who knows how long. Also, in 2008, a sequel called the Power of the Dark Crystal will come out, but with (ugh) ANAMATRONIC PUPPETS. I will watch both, personally.
Mom loves this movie!.......2007-05-18
This is a pretty good movie, it was better to me when I was little though :) Since technology has come so far along now. I couldn't get over the price though, it was $6.99 so I couldn't resist adding it to my collection.
An all time favorite!

Director John Carpenter and special makeup effects master Rob Bottin teamed up for this 1982 remake of the 1951 science fiction classic The Thing from Another World, and the result is a mixed blessing. It's got moments of highly effective terror and spine-tingling suspense, but it's mostly a showcase for some of the goriest and most horrifically grotesque makeup effects ever created for a movie. With such highlights as a dog that splits open and blossoms into something indescribably gruesome, this is the kind of movie for die-hard horror fans and anyone who slows down to stare at fatal traffic accidents. On those terms, however, it's hard not to be impressed by the movie's wild and wacky freak show. It all begins when scientists at an arctic research station discover an alien spacecraft under the thick ice, and thaw out the alien body found aboard. What they don't know is that the alien can assume any human form, and before long the scientists can't tell who's real and who's a deadly alien threat. Kurt Russell leads the battle against the terrifying intruder, and the supporting cast includes Richard Masur, Richard Dysart, Donald Moffat, and Wilford Brimley. They're all playing standard characters who are neglected by the mechanistic screenplay (based on the classic sci-fi story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell), but Carpenter's emphasis is clearly on the gross-out effects and escalating tension. If you've got the stomach for it (and let's face it, there's a big audience for eerie gore), this is a thrill ride you won't want to miss. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
I had to wait 24 years to see this movie.......2007-06-25
When I had 5 years old I saw some trailers in 1982 when some guy lose his head and the head run. I can't believe what hapenned and i had about 2 days that I can't sleep well.
I never knew the name of that movie, until talking with an older friend in 2005 he told the name... The Thing. Oh my god !!! I ran to buy this movie. I eliminated all the fears from all this years.
This is a great movie, a great history, Kurt Russel rocks.
Thanks Mr. Carpenter to accept this remake of "The thing from another world" and thanks to give the principal role to Kurt Russel.
U.S. Outpost #31, Antarctica, 1982--Twelve men are commissioned to gather physical and natural science data. It is the dead of winter. With six months of darkness ahead of them, they uncover the find of the century. Of a thousand centuries.
If only they could put it back.
Paranoia Given Flesh.......2007-06-07
It still shocks me that this movie bombed at the box office and very nearly ended John Carpenter's career. The top notch effects, excellent direction and acting, as well as a novel storyline make this a suspense film that eats into your very bones. Kurt Russell and the rest of the cast give soul to the characters who struggle to survive against a foe who threatens to divide and conquer them one by one. The thought behind the thing was mind blowing: an amorphous alien who camouflages itself in order to enter into a group and destroy them from within. If you haven't seen this then you must. You can't be a horror buff without it.
Where's Adrienne Barbeau.......2007-06-02
Where is Adrienne Barbeau in this movie starring Kurt Russell? I guess the review for this would be better if you could get the actors & actresses right
His best movie after Halloween.......2007-05-23
I hope to all that is great that they do NOT make a remake of this movie. You can argue that this was remake but if you read the original story, you will find that this is a closer adaptation of the book than the original movie.
Paranoid at the Pole.......2007-05-23
Making a tautly suspenseful film requires the ingredients of a superbly crafted work such as this science fiction classic. The Thing is not merely a sequence of gore-splashed killings that leaves one wondering who will be the last man standing. Suspense builds, and paranoia grows to fever pitch in this action packed thriller.
Atmospheric conditions of Anarctica and the creepy dark corners in this ice camp provide the canvas for a master to go to work on the nerves. But far worse is in store for the camp dwellers who find themselves out of radio contact with the rest of the world and wondering how they will warn of their horrible discovery. As the story unravels, everyone learns survival has become a game of every man for himself. No one can be trusted in this nightmare at the bottom of the world.
The film opens mysteriously enough. The quiet of the camp is shattered by gunfire from an approaching helicopter. Someone is shooting at what appears to be a fleeing dog. In an unforgiving part of the planet where the pressures are extreme, conclusions are quickly drawn that the helicopter occupants surely have lost their minds. But, the shooter is dropped and the pilot killed in a fiery explosion before questions can get under way. An investigation is promptly mounted and the camp dwellers soon learn from a visit to the neighboring camp that the men in the helicopter were overcome not by insanity but a creature found buried in the ice. But is it soon enough?
Kurt Russell plays the stereotype, no-nonse, machismo hero who ends up leading a struggle to stop "the thing." The cast is populated by a garden variety oddball or two, a few eggheads and the every-man faces that have become customary fare for an alien-eats menu. No character development here. No time for it in this well-paced flick.
The technology is impressive enough that the film's effects hold up even today. This film is gorey by anyone's measure. So, keep a good grip on your popcorn and soda - you're going for a ride.

Description
Radioactive waste dumped in the Atlantic Ocean awakens a prehistoric monster than can project electric shocks and radioactive beams. After the beast terrorizes the English coast, officials decide against attacking the creature with conventional weaponry because such a strategy would spread a dangerous amount radioactive contamination over the entire country. LOOKING FOR CLUES.......2007-07-04
It has to be said up front that THE GIANT BEHEMOTH is BO-RING! It's often more fondly remembered as a better picture than what it was. It's too long for the material, it takes too long to get to the BEHEMOTH, and once we finally get to it - it disappoints. It's too stiff, too flat and too little too late (with effects repeated again and again to pad out the time) for the film when it finally arrives.
Not to say it doesn't have its moments, but they are fleeting at best (and sloppy at worst - check out the bottom left hand corner of your screen when the BEHEMOTH tips the ferry over in the Thames, the neck of BEHEMOTH comes up too far, exposing the naked metal structure underneath). THE GIANT BEHEMOTH is simply a "CSI/MONSTER procedural" film that opens with a strange occurance and then spends the rest of the film searching for, and following the clues to something which is no mystery to anyone who saw the poster, and paid for a ticket. It's a GIANT BEHEMOTH!, we see it, why can't they, and when are they going to get to it? But, having said that, it is interesting to watch what amounts to a mystery of finding, in essence, an 800 pound gorilla in a locked room from a trail of bananas. But, it's not enough to save the picture.
Commentary is included with Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett (effects men both) and while they admire the effort given to creating THE GIANT BEHEMOTH, they are not afraid to slouch back into their seats and question every choice made in making this picture. From it's slow and plodding pace, to their novel take on this film being about the "chain of command" (pushing paperwork and theories upwards to those who have the power to issue orders and (finally) take action. They rightly joke that the only authority not represented in the film is the Queen herself, whose blessing it seems was not sought when it came to radioactive monsters). Being not only effects men, but writers and directors as well, it is funny to listen to them point out all the tricks the creators of THE GIANT BEHEMOTH used to pad the film to make its running time - great stuff, and a fun commentary.
Overall, should you own a copy of THE GIANT BEHEMOTH? If you're a fan (be it mild or die hard) then, yes, your collection would not be complete (and this is coming from someone who dares to own a copy of MONSTER FROM GREEN HELL which is BO-RING! times two). Despite its flaws and plodding pace, there is some love there, and worth the space on your shelf.
Also, for DOCTOR WHO fans... there is one TARDIS in THE GIANT BEHEMOTH, see if you can spot it.
MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER BIG BAD DINOSAUR YARN.......2005-09-03
Basically the story goes like this; a Cornish fisherman is found by his daughter covered with radiation burns. His last "word" to her on the surf is, "behemoth," a citation from the bible which we understand means some kind of monster did this to him. Eventually, England is besieged by this dinosaur which as the film unfolds is evidently the tragic by-product of careless atomic fallout in the Pacific. Ultimately, only a special torpedo fired from a two man sub in London harbor can save London and ultimately the world.
Yes, the story line is rather cliché, but there is more, much more.
Around 1960 I saw "THE GIANT BEHEMOTH" many times and each time I was genuinely enchanted and terrified by it. The premise of a dinosaur suddenly appearing and destroying a major city, London in this case, had been done before and perhaps somewhat better in "THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS. However, this was a new setting, England and ultimately London and this monster spewed radiation at anyone and anything within its sight, a take off on the germ carrying "Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" naturally, but still something new. Also, the Behemoth was invisible to radar so its movements were impossible to track as it traveled mostly underwater. This virtual invisibility caused more than a few fatalities including the venerable Doctor Sampson [Jack MacGowran] who was in a helicopter over the Thames trying to get a closer look at what no one who saw lived to tell about. Of course we had to wait an hour into this 79 minute flick to actually see the monster, but this type of invisible sneaky monster becomes visible in these old creature features incrementally which adds to both the campiness and suspense. Somehow after several failed attempts and desperate situations the monster is vanquished!
BUT .. BUT .. BUT .. As the film ends we hear on the car radio that dead fish are covering the shores of New England just as they had in England just prior to this whole thing beginning! The two scientists having just barely survived this ordeal looked at each other rather ominously, and without uttering a word we knew that they knew, that it was all about to happen again! Maybe we would not be so lucky again!?
For a long time I debated as to whether this film or the "BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS" was superior. I have recently concluded that the stories are about equal though very similar as is the acting, but the superior stop action animation by Ray Harryhausen in "The Beast" gives it a clear edge. Although Eugène Lourié Directed both films [plus Gorgo] and Willis O'Brien did some of the Special Effects for the "Giant Behemoth" there are some major visual weaknesses and much less visual air time in the "Giant Behemoth" for the featured monster. Also as I recall one pretty gritty scene where the Behemoth trashes a ferry and does leave some people dead in the water has not made it to video, having been edited out in the transfer probably because it was deleted from the TV version that played in the 1960's. Too much gore?
Well, whichever film is better is now for you to judge.
If this genre [50's style atomic creature/features] is appealing to you, this film is among the best of its kind. The film transfer is very good for a 46 year old film, and very well worth viewing. Nevertheless a DVD, preferably remastered with the lost ferry scene restored would be greatly appreciated and make a more equitable rival for "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms".
ANOTHER GIANT, RADIOACTIVE MONSTER.......2005-06-01
Giant Behemoth, and isn't that just a bit redundant, was directed by Eugene Lourie who was no stranger when it came to films in this genre having directed the 1953 classic Beast From 20,000 Fathoms and 1958's Colossus of New York and would go on to direct Gorgo in 1961. Clearly the man liked giant monsters. Behemoth is in the latter in terms of quality behind both Gorgo and Beast from 20,000 fathoms. This creature threatens the shores of England not only with his size but also being able to emit radiation to burn people. The stop-motion animation was done by Willis O' Brien who did King Kong and was Ray harryhausen's mentor. The animation itself looks very good as you might expect but the the monster up close looks a little cheap and cheesy. At any rate the best rampages through London, even destroying London Bridge. The movie was on a very low budget and it shows but it's more laughable rather than being a detriment to the film. The performances in the film are adequate, in fact better than you might expect for a movie with such a small budget, so kudos to the mostly British cast. Not as good as many other giant, radiation-created monsters of the 1950's but still worth a view.
Classic film, MISSING KEY SCENE THOUGH!.......2004-04-09
A Great film but shame on Warner Bros. for releasing an edited version! Film quality is good, but the FERRY SCENE where the creature attacks and sinks the ferry is MISSING! Great sequence involving people boarding a ferry for an afternoon ride, when suddenly the creature attacks. Old woman eating, little girl with doll, full ship of people become victims of the beast. Memorable last scene in this sequence showing bodies floating, burned from the creatures radioactive rays, gruesome, yet an important part of the movie, What Happened To This Scene? Too long to blame it on broken film, obviously they used an Edited print! Too bad, hopefully the eventual DVD release will be INTACT! And COMPLETE!
"And The Lord said, Behold now.....The Behemoth".......2004-03-11
One of the last in "the giant monster from sea" genre of the 50's
"Gorgo" officially being the last in 1961 before the japan imports
came in.
The story concerns that of a mysterious radioactive force that
not only seems to wash up mountains of dead fish on england shore
but infects one man's hand & kills another. An investigation by Marine biologist uncovers the radioactivity's source from that of
the titled creature, a huge brontasaur left over from "King Kong"
who proceeds to stomp London and burn all within it's radioactive
range.
Another of my favorites from the creature feature era This film
was probably Willis O'Brien's swan song as his creation stirs the
streets of Merry old in all it's glory one would tend to think on
life had come full circle from his brontosaur of the "Lost world"
made some 30 years earlier,Unlike "The beast from 20,000 fathoms"
This film takes on a darker tone focusing more on the science and
the aftermath of radiation (showing burn victims, fishing market
slumps etc)& in addition a memorable score. Gene Evans in one of
his few goodguy roles accompanies Andre Morell as Prof. Bigford
Special effect range from a wonderful entrance by the creature
on the docks to the quickie shot of the beast's wooden head on a
makeshift raft. You wouldn't see this sequence on warner bros.vhs
version of The giant behemoth though. I wouldn't believe that the
company responsible for so many classics like "The African Queen"
& "The Roaring 20's" would be too cheap to use a 90 min tape. The
picture quality is great but I hope the dvd will be more complete

3 for the price of 1.......2007-06-27
I bought this for The Creature from the Black Lagoon. The box set was pretty much the same price as the single video, so i got it. It's pretty-well put together and well, other people have written about the plots. If you want one of the movies, it's worth getting all three.
Creature From The Black Lagoon.......2007-06-09

Awesome but Shame on Universal............2007-06-08
Usually my intentions with my reviews is more toward the technical end and not the actual movie since most have seen the movies before, or there is usually more attention to critiqueing the movie than how well it was transferred to DVD. If you're like me and love quality over quantity then read on.
The packaging and art is simply spectacular on this collection. The bonus features are awesome!!! With careful attention given to lighting and sound. All of the "living" characters including the creature actors are interviewed. Great job Universal! The overall quality to the actual transfer for the first disc is superb. The print used was in good condition for a movie that old. The Creature walks among us was also tranferred with very good quality but the "Revenge of the Creature" sucks! The compression is very noticable. Shame on Universal for not placing this great movie on a third disc in this otherwise great collection. Instead they tried to fit both movies on the second disc. Naturally there are few bonus features which is understandable. But why sacrifice the quality??? Guys some of us don't want to be reminded about quality throughout the length of a movie. The culprit is the clown that walked into the executives offices and said hey I can fit 2 movies on one disc. Using what is referred to as "VBR" (variable bit rate) will only compress areas that are redundant in the picture and professes to be un-noticable to the viewer...BULL!!! judge for selves. View the first 2 and then watch the third. I do hate the "VBR" compression format.

Creature from the Black Lagoon.......2007-05-23
Still a great flic! I remember seeing this as a kid. Not just a guy in a rubber suit, they did a good job on this one. The Creature is very life-like even for todays standards of effects. This has a good believable story line as well. In this edition you get the 2 editional movies, to carry on the story. A real classic and a welcome edition to my film library.
A Great Set.......2007-05-20
I was a big fan of these movies growing up watching the friday night creature feature on tv. The first film is without a doubt the best. Some scientists hire a boat to take them down the Amazon River to follow up on native rumors that a prehistoric creature still lives. They find the "gill-man" and start fighting for their lives. The Creature has a simple plan. Kill the men and keep the woman. To their credit, when the crew figures this out, they try to get away as quickly as possible. In the second and third films, you start to wonder why people don't just leave this beast alone. The sequel, The Revenge of the Creature has a lot of action. This time some folks have a great idea to capture the Creature and put him on display in a Florida aquarium. He of course escapes, grabs a girl and terrorizes the eastern seaboard. The third movie is the most bizzare. In The Creature Walks Among Us, some folks have an even greater idea of capturing him, removing his gills, and making him into a land animal. Don't ask why they put him through all of this. Anyway, the DVD set is very high quality and well worth it.
