Okay, I'd like to clear up a few things about these dvd sets. "Are You Afraid of the Dark" was one of my favorite shows as a kid and I almost didn't buy this dvd set, I'm glad I did. Alot of peolpe are wondering if these are bootlegs. They are not. They are 100% authentic dvds. THe show was a canadian show that Nickelodeon co-produced and released in America. The dvds are from the canadian company. Don't expect a Nickelodeon rlease of the show. They seem quite content screwing over fans of early 90's Nick, by cnacleing the release the final season of Pete and Pete, and not putting any of Salute Your Shorts on dvd either. The biggest issue people were worried about with these dvds was The first seasons packaging. It is a tri fold out cardboard case, like a standard tv show dvd is. The problem is, it doesn't include an outer sleeve to put it into. It's supposed to be that way, so don't worry. Not the best packaging, but it works. The other 2 seasons that were released do include an outer sleeve, which I definitly prefer, but the first season is acceptable. The dvds are of great quality, the picture and sound qaulity is great too. Don't expect remastered in surround sound and high def, but they are better than your average tv broadcast quality. Another question people had was about the changed opening. The first season has a changed opening. They cut the regualr opening short and added a bunch of scenes from the show cut to the credits music. Season 2 and 3 have the original opening you all remember and love. And finally, the question of altered scenes in episodes. In the first season, The Tale of The Hungry Hounds, a scene in the begining is cut where the main characters friend jumps out and scares her in the attic. It cuts akwardly instead to her reacting and doesbn't make any sense in the context. I don't know why thet did it, but the episode is far from ruined with that 5 second scene excised. The only other part thet changed was the song at the end of the Prom Queen episode. They changed it because they lost the rights to the song. Again, not a big deal, but be forewarned. These dvds are definitly worth the price, and they will play in your dvd player. They are Region 1 which is North America and Canada so don't worry. They are not available in American stores as far as I know, so ebay and amazon are your best bet for getting them. Hope this helped to clear up a few things, and let's hope they put out the rest of the incredible show soon!

I'm so grateful that they finally released this show. I love the set and the quality is great. A must for any fan of the show. The only drawback is that they altered the intro and added all these clips from the series in. Its not the original intro, which brings back most of the memories from me. But hey, i can't complain. Its just great to own the episodes.

Just like many of you...I am now 22 years old and still look back on my tv shows I used to watch on Nickelodeon. Slaute Your Shorts, Hey Dude, and Are You Afraid of the Dark (to name a few) have all given me great memories. Thank GOD they put this out on DVD. I just got mine today and watched the first 2 episodes....I couldn't believe how much I remember! I thought that maybe (since I am alot old now) I wouldn't like it as much....but I was wrong...this is something to watch forever and one day show my kids what good "teen TV" used to be like. Get the DVD! NOW JUST BRING MORE OF THESE KINDS OF SHOWS ONTO DVD!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Submitted for the approval of the midnight society.......2006-12-26

Remember when you could watch great shows on Nick at Night?? Are you afraid of the dark centers on friends that gather around a campfire and tell scary tales. While the show certainly hasn't aged all that well with costumes and effects- the spook factor has. I am 24 and have been looking for this series since tv shows started appearing on dvd sets and finally they are here. I still love this show. The characters around the campfire are not the stars- the scary stories they tell take center stage. We're not talking blood and gore but stories where little girls are trapped on the other side of a mirror, or a teenage ghost is still waiting in a grave yard for her boyfriend to take her prom, or a pair of cheap glasses let you see an another dimension, or vampires move in next door and your mother invites them in. This is still spooky and the stories don't always end happily. The seasons episodes are as follows.
1.The Phantom Cab
2.The Lonely Ghost
3.Laughing in the Dark
4.The Twisted Claw
5.The Hungry Hounds
6.The Prom Queen
7.The Captured Souls
8.The Nightly Neighbors
9.The Dark Music
10.Jake and the Leprechaun
11.The Super Specs
12.The Sorcerer's Apprentice
13.The Pinball WIzard

If you are a fan of the show you must also pick up season 2. One sour note- this dvd set was not made with an outer cover. Oh well. I got over it!

5 out of 5 stars Can't wait!.......2006-06-25

Though there's no purchase link, at least there is some type of DVD set out there! I purchased mine off of Ebay (the "complete" series, although it's missing a few episodes) and I'll wait until Nickelodeon comes out with their own DVD set. Maybe this will light a fire under their butts to get an official set out there!!

I cannot remember where online I bought them from, but I have all the seasons- and it wasn't expensive at all and the DVD quality is great.

4 out of 5 stars A Little Disapointed.......2007-03-01

When I bought This I Was A Little Disapointed That It Was Not The Original Cast But Instead It Was ^ Selections From Season 6 Long After The Original Show Died But This Is Still Really Cool Because I Watched The Entire Show From Start To Finish And It Is A Great Trip Down Memory
So I Would Still Recomend This To Any Viewer That Watched Any Part Of The Show One Small Tip Though Go To Walmart And Buy This For $5.50 Instead Of Paying $9.99 On Here

2 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware........2007-02-12

I know for some of you the sheer excitement of getting 2 disks of an old favorite tv show at such an amazing price is just too good to be true, isn't it? Well apparently, it is. If the 2006 in parenthesis didn't clue you in these 'Freaky Favorites' are picked from AYAOTD's Season 6, which was was the new cast after it's initial run was cancelled.

So like the other reviewer has stated, if you want the original cast and tales, goto amazon.ca and order it from amazon's canadian retailer. And write to Nick and tell them to release these classics in America, otherwise we're just going to keep giving those canucks our American money.

5 out of 5 stars Buy This Set.......2006-10-11

This was my favorite show when I was a kid. I recently ordered the Season One set from Canada and found that I like the episodes as much today as I did long ago. Seasons One and Two of this series are undoubtedly the best; they have the most diverse array of unique, engaging stories with good dialog and acting. After Season Two, the series becomes derivative and disapointing. The show fell into a common trap: it began to immitate itself. The episodes in the Freaky Favorites collection are the first six episodes of Season Six. Keep in mind that Season Six is the first season of the revival series that aired about three years after the original. The quality of these episodes, as one might expect, is low; however, I recommend purchasing the Freaky Favorites set to show everyone that you are interested in the series. This could result in the U.S. release of the early seasons, the marvelous ones, which is what most of us truly desire.

All of you should make sure that you go to Amazon.ca and buy Season One! Pre-order Season Two as well! Canadian DVDs are Reagion 1, just like all DVDs in the U.S., so your player will definitely be able to read them. Also, shipping is faster than you might expect; I live in Chicago and it took Season One only a few days to arrive at my front door. Treat yourself to these amazing collections and spread the word!

4 out of 5 stars Sufficient Holdover.......2007-02-07

Despite this package being totally devoid of extras, the quality of the shows themeselves and the fact that this is the only non-bootleg collection of this show currently availabe, this is definitely a sufficient enough holdover until Nickelodeon gets their act together. Sadly, those jerks probably never will.

5 out of 5 stars Submitted for the approval of the midnight society I give you the tale of..........2006-12-26

The second season of the hit series Are you Afraid of the Dark got even better with scarier tales. The series centers around a group of friends that tell spooky tales around a campfire. This show was the leader of the Nick at Night fans. It resembles Eerie Indiana to a degree but is way spookier. This season we hear tales of a locker that is haunter by a hippie, kids getting tested by aliens, a boarding school with an evil plot, a boy following his bicycle to the grave and a boy that will do anything to gain affection by a snob, even if it means turning into a monster in the process. This will forever be my favorite tv show from when I was a kid. These season sets are only released in Canada so be sure to grab them while you still can. I can see the price increasing after they stop manufacturing them- which will happen. The episode list is below. My favorite episodes are 4,6,7,10,11 and 12. Enjoy!
1.The Final Wish
2.The Midnight Madness
3.The Locker 22
4.The Thirteenth Floor
5.The Dream Machine
6.The Dark Dragon
7.The Frozen Ghost
8.The Whispering Walls
9.The Full Moon
10.The Shiny Red Bicycle
11.The Magician's Assistant
12.The Hatching

4 out of 5 stars I'll never pick up my knitting needles again without remembering this movie.......2006-03-05

This movie was a surprise from start to finish. It definitely kept me off balance and was unpredictable, if not pretty disturbing. I will never pick up my knitting needles again without thinking of this movie. Strange how familiar objects and sounds take on an entirely different meaning in this boy's world.

3 out of 5 stars Three Blind Mice.......2005-11-19

This was a film with a great premise with a first half that showed amazing promise.
Immediately we're told a slasher is targeting the blind and introduced to a strange boy and his sightless mother and rigid policeman father. Though uncertain who the criminal is we get the impression a young repairman working at a blind institute whistling ironic songs can't have good intentions. The parallel between killer and young protagonist is made early on with the boy covering alot of stalker ground: following a target home, toying with them, peeping on them, then breaking & entering.
Right at about this point the movie begins to devolve. The rationality takes that of a nightmare and though mildly frightening it makes very little sense in the long run. Great lines about villians being "all the same" are lost in a plotless story. We're treated to truly great set-ups, the stand-out being a train station attack, and it's ultimately all in vain.
But really it's not surprising. This seems more akin to Italian giallo than any other kind of thriller and those films, despite their ingenuity and ambition, are always incomplete.

3 out of 5 stars Go away, son, you bother me!.......2004-11-11

Uneven British voyage into bizarre murders--and a
kid who makes viewer want to yank him from the screen and personally introduce him to Jeffrey Dahmer. Nice touch: beautiful blind woman has no clue how incredibly sexy she is.

3 out of 5 stars The one-eyed man is king in the land of the blind.......2003-05-30

I know that this is meant to be a drama of great power with startling insights into the human condition, man's inhumanity to man's, the lives of quiet despair we all face, or some other pretentious nonsense. I just found it confusing as well!

The basic plot centers on young Frank. Just starting his school holidays, Frank offers to help his blind mother down to walk to the local center for the blind. There he meets her blind friends, listens to the gossip about the local serial killer (who attacks blind people), and then goes about his merry day stalking some of the blind residents who live near the center. Unseen he pries into their lives and, is actually able save one the victims from the serial killer.

Reality check ! It was all in the kid's mind ..

Young Frank has imagined a world in which he is the hero and saves the day. In reality the little boy is the one going blind and his fear has caused an imaginary world in which he is the sighted hero.

The boy's behavior becomes increasingly erratic and dangerous as the movie progresses. Because the adults have so many other things going on it takes a long time before anyone realizes how dangerous Frank has become. By the time they do clue in, it might be too late.

This was confusing and often times dark movie. I like the first part in the boy's fantasy where he silently prowls the neighborhood. I even enjoyed the first part of the 'real' section where half the fun was spotting the people and places from the child's imagination. But every time you get used to something in the film they ratchet it up to a new level of cruelty. That was a little overdone.

5 out of 5 stars Mark Peploe's Afraid of the Dark.......2002-06-05

Mark Peploe, one of the Oscar winning screenwriters behind "The Last Emperor," comes up with his own tale of a little boy overwhelmed by his situation, and in the process scares the living daylights out of the viewer.

Ben Keyworth is young Lucas, a morose little boy whose blind mother Miriam (Fanny Ardant) dotes on him. His father, Frank (James Fox), is a cop and Lucas' hero. A madman is running around London slashing the faces of blind women, and the blind community is in a panic. Lucas is a little boy, hardly noticeable, and begins observing prime suspects. The ice cream man, the window washer, the photographer, even the overly helpful locksmith (played by a young David Thewlis), are all under the boy's suspicion. A neighborhood golden retriever is Lucas' only friend and confidant, and eventually Lucas has a showdown with the slasher, stabbing him in the eye with his trusty knitting needle...and then the film does a complete 180!

We find out Lucas was only imagining the first half of the film. The characters from the first half were not blind at all. Instead, it was Lucas who is slowly losing his sight. The day of his older half-sister's wedding, he is shunted aside. His mother goes into labor at the reception, and everyone forgets the poor little boy. Lucas still has the trusty dog Toby along, but his imagination gets the best of him. Toby is killed, and Lucas sets his next target as his new baby sister with the pretty blue eyes everyone comments on.

Ben Keyworth, as Lucas, is incredible. Some might see his delivery as flat and monotonal, but I thought his cold exterior was perfect. You will feel sorry for him, even in the throes of the madness that grips him in the latter part of the film. The beautiful French actress Fanny Ardant is great as his mother, and James Fox is always reliable as the dad.

Peploe's direction is so creepy it becomes uncomfortable often. The graveyard scenes are chilling, as is Lucas' hallucinations. Peploe also co-wrote the screenplay (with Frederick Seidel), so he knows these characters better than anyone. None of them are stupid, or do horror film-stupid things, and this adds to the squirm level. Plus, if you have any sort of phobia about things getting too close to your eyes (like I do), this may not be for you.

The pace is slow, as Peploe builds his characters, and this is actually a relief. The entire cast is good, and Peploe should direct more. All in all, "Afraid of the Dark" is one of those films that you will find bothering you days after you see it. I highly recommend it.

This is rated (R) for physical violence, gore, female nudity, some sexual references, and strong adult situations.

1 out of 5 stars This may help.......2006-03-06

First off, I have not seen this, so ignore the 1 star rating (a rating required for posting)

I believe the problem here may be that this is linked as a "Better Together" and is linked to a show from Nick, leading people who don't read the information regarding this title to think it must be the Nick show, and not what it really is.

Please take the time to read the product descriptions, but also, Amazon, perhaps you should check that sort of thing before you offer a "Better Together" option. This should be linked to some other horror movie, or not at all, but not with the Nick kid-friendly show "Clarrisa Explains It All Season One".

I hope this can help prevent problems like this from occurring...

1 out of 5 stars How Is this Misleading?.......2005-11-04

I'm sorry I don't want to sound or be mean but come on people! There is nothing on this page that gives us the idea that it is "Are you Afraid of the Dark?" I seen this pop up while I was looking for my childhood show and I said oh I wonder what this is. I knew instantly that it was not the TV Show. So if you bought this item that's too bad but it was your own fault not whoever put this page together.

      3 out of 5 stars Misleading???.......2005-11-03

To the person below who mentioned how this product is misleading...since when did the infamous show "Are You Afraid of the Dark" deserve a rating of R, when after all it was originally aired on the friendly, kid targeting network, Nickelodeon???

5 out of 5 stars Its Doug Funnie again!!!.......2005-10-07

[...] I have made a drastic mistake. For one, I have found that this is the wrong DVD. When my wife found out, she jumped off the Nick building in protest. God bless her heart. But though it a very sad time, and I have made a consideral amount of people angry, I find it quite funny. I have made atleat 1 person, Beverly Parapinsky to be exact, pay money and waste some time in trying to buy this. I admit, I laughed out loud for quite a but of time when I read the review. Please except my apologies.
