Description
Cult director Jean Rollin's first feature mixes existentialism and vampirism with the added ingredient of chaos. Originally made as a short, it was expanded to feature length with the dead cast inexplicably returning to life half-way through (having been killed off at the end of the original). That said, "Le Viol du Vampire" is a masterpiece of the bizarre, mixing blood, a naked woman in a convertible, coffins and some fencing, semi-naked nymphs in a fragmented melee.

Description
It's terror times three with these bloodsucking classics from Jean Rollin, France's maestro of the macabre. Enter a world filled with gothic castles, nubile beauties in various stages of undress, and predatory vampires, with haunting music and images bound to linger in your nightmares. Bet you can't take just one bite! These adult fairy tales of the monstrous and mysterious represent three of Rollin's finest achievements. Includes his controversial first "banned" film, "Rape of the Vampire," the outrageously colorful "Shiver of the Vampires," and his biggest box office hit, "Requiem for a Vampire," also known as "Caged Virgins" and "Virgins and Vampires."

French Vamp Collection.......2007-05-25
Very Arty , & very French , leaves you to fill in the spaces alot .
astoundingly beautiful.......2004-09-18
Picked up this set expecting some typical vampire films and was blown away by the photography and ambiance. This set introduced me to the beauty and strangeness of Rollin's work. It was his later films that really captivated me: Fascination, Two Vampire Orphans, and Fiancee of Dracula. These are hard films to describe but there's something very beautiful about them. You'll either get it or you wont. The films in this set aren't as captivating to me as the three films I mentioned above but they have some amazing moments and I'm very pleased that I discovered this set of films since they introduced me to the work of this visionary director and led me to experience the glory of his later films.
Disappointed.......2004-05-25
I decided to get this collection as it sounded interesting enough. I was hoping for at least something exciting.
Sadly, I found these movies boring for the most part.
The first half hour of the rape of the vampires was perhaps the best for myself/ downhill from there. Redemptions Logo at the start of the dvd's is better then the movies !@#
Anyone know of some good vampire movies !@#
introduction to rollin: lesson 1.......2003-09-16
OH YEAH! it's great & redemption has made this collection available with an amazingly low cost. yes, that's 3 great films of rollin at a small price. for those of us who've wanted to study the maestro's classics or just indulge in some fantastic eurotrash, this is an absolute dream come true. infact, this was my introduction or 1st lesson in my education of jean rollin. of all three films, i'd have to say i love rape of the vampire best. as strange as this might sound, i was initially very confused when i saw this film & wouldn't have rated it so highly had i not given it a second viewing. having said that, i loved the images which are macabre & beautiful almost all at once. needless to say, that 2nd viewing really stole my attention & gave me a deeper appreciation of the film altogether. i was able to piece together the events & characters the 2nd time around & i realized what a genius jean rollin truly is. rape of the vmapire is to jean rollin as eraserhead is to david lynch. a rare landmark film that should be talked about for years & could be deemed an instant cult classic. the next film was equally enjoyable but not as confusing. shiver of the vampire is campy, macabre, and ironically funny. you'll find yourself shivering with delight at the hilarious but philosophical dialogue & shuddering with some of the images of erotic & vampiric activity. i could see this film would probably be more embraced by the mainstream than perhaps some of his earlier. not exceptionally graphic but there is a great deal of implied homoeroticism here. the next film was perhaps one of his most mainstream films (or should i say popular) of all time. released under various names through the years, requiem for a vampire is presented here in all of it's uncut glory. not my favorite of the three but it does have a surreal, child-like fairytale quality to it as many have mentioned. strangely enough, this film is by far the most sexually explicit or graphic film out of the three by far. the dungeon scene alone merits an NC-17 rating easily. had the film's dialogue been 30 lines shorter, this could have been a silent film. if you enjoy these films, thne you might go on to try living dead girl or night of the hunted which are also terrific films. although they are far more depressing than either requiem or shiver, they are indeed undisputed rollin classics. in fact, amazon.com has listed a a zombie collection which should have those titles included & will be released early october. this should save you some money & still provide the same entertaining quality you've come(or will come to expect) with redemption's wonderful catalog.

Sex-hungry teens are kidnapped and taken to a rural hospital, run by aliens who need their blood as the key to their own longevity.
Customer Reviews:
F@#*!N movie.......2006-12-17
this movie has a good title, but it could of been better directed. There were no monsters in this film like showne in the front cover. it has unnecesary sex seens. I give it credit for for having the dumb blonde actresses.
Something's missing.......2006-07-29
This film had so many internal plot faults as to make it very annoying. Why do aliens needing to harvest blood, who carry little rings on their fingers that give off little green rays still need to resort to having two inbred mechanics sneak up behind victims with a choloroform covered cloth?
John Carradine is the cheif alien. Julie Newmar looks bored in her role.
"Last night I had this eerie feeling something was watching us.".......2006-05-30
Probably the best thing about this DVD release of Evils of the Night (1985) is the wonderfully sleazy and ridiculously lurid cover art which, by the way, was also used to promote the film during its original, theatrical release. It's also interesting to note the artwork, at least on some of the posters, was slightly different than what you're seeing on the DVD case, specifically in terms of the woman portrayed and her overdeveloped flesh globes, the element missing here being a pair of oversized nubbins proudly pointing upward, straining to break free of the woman's flimsy top. Produced, directed and co-written by Mardi Rustam (Psychic Killer, The Bad Bunch, Eaten Alive), the movie features, in no particular order, Aldo Ray (The Violent Ones, The Green Berets), Julie Newmar ("Batman"), John Carradine (Hillbillys in a Haunted House, The Astro-Zombies), Tina Louise ("Gilligan's Island"), and Neville Brand (Stalag 17, Eaten Alive) in his very last role. Also appearing is Karrie Emerson (Chopping Mall), Bridget Holloman (Stoogemania), Tony O'Dell (The Karate Kid, "Head of the Class"), and adult film star Amber Lynn (Hot Tails, Poonies, In and Out in Beverly Hills).
The movie opens with a spaceship arriving on Earth, followed by some soft core action as various individuals get it on during the night in some woods by a river...some stuff happens, at least one person gets murdered (I think), and now we're in a hospital as two women dressed in truly ridiculous space outfits are wheeling a gurney with one of the kids from the woods. As the two alien orderlies start fondling each other (seriously), the kid decides this a good a time as any to escape. Passing an open doorway he sees three individuals, whom we later learn are named Dr. Kozmar (Carradine), Dr. Zarma (Newmar), and Cora (Louise), babbling on about something. The kid makes his way outside, but not much further than that as he finds himself on the wrong end of an alien power ring. Now it's daytime and we're back on the beach by the river. There are a whole lot of idiot teens running around engaging in all sorts of shenanigans (check out the topless girl rubbing lotion on the other topless girl...they sure seem to be enjoying themselves). Night comes and our focus shifts towards five teens...we're now twenty-five minutes into the movie and I still have no idea in hell what's going on...since I ended up sitting through the entire film, I'll just save us both a lot of time and cut to the chase...some vampire-type aliens have come to Earth in need of the blood from youthful individuals, and have enlisted the aid of a couple of trashy, sleazy, moronic mechanics played by Aldo Ray and Neville Brand. Now here's the funny part...the alien research indicated the spot they're at as ideal for their needs (a small college town) given the large amount of young people present, but said research neglected to relate the fact that it was summer break, and most of the students were gone, leaving behind relatively slim pickings.
First I'll tell you some of the things this movie has...there's nekkid female flesh, fondling, kidnappings, moronic teens, frisky codgers, John Carradine looking pathetic as can be in an incredibly lame silver space suit, Julie Newmar showing off her legs (even at fifty plus years of age Ms. Newmar still had it going on), a haunted house, and deaths by garrote, power drill, chopping axe, laser blast, and brake pad. Now for the things the movie doesn't have...a discernable plot, decent acting, a cohesive script, a sense of direction, a worthwhile budget, and a reason for being...the movie is broken up into three, basic parts...the first part of the film is all the teenage skin crapola, the second part Carradine, Newmar, and Tina Louise acting like aliens, relating their schemes, and then the third part has Aldo Ray and Neville Brand tormenting the kids along with the bits of gore. I don't know why the filmmakers didn't just eliminate all the useless alien garbage from the story and create regular characters for Carradine, Newmar, and Louise in a straight up horror tale about two, crazed, murderous auto mechanics terrorizing a bunch of teenagers in a small town. That would have gone down a lot better than this psuedo sci-fi horror nonsense, but whatever...I'm unsure who edited this thing, but whomever did sure managed to kill any sense of positive flow within the film, the overall effect being that similar to watching a television show and having someone changing the channel every ten minutes or so...looking back on the movie I can't help but wonder if perhaps a good deal of it was made bad on purpose in an attempt at humor, but given some of director Rustam's other projects I think I'd be giving out too much credit if I pushed that idea. I suppose one could have fun with this film, given two things...they know what they're getting themselves into and second, their expectations are extremely low. You know, I do appreciate companies (like Shriek Show) out there focusing their attention on independent features like Evils of the Night and making concerted efforts to bring them to DVD, but how about dredging up some decent and worthy ones, along with the slop? How about working on releases for Night of the Comet (1984), The Bermuda Depths (1978), From Beyond (1986), Crack in the World (1965), or Damnation Alley (1977), or Night of the Creeps (1986) to name a meager few? Certainly many of these have large enough and dedicated followings to warrant the attention.
This Media Blasters/Shriek Show DVD release features a fullscreen picture format (1.33:1) of the film. The picture quality is decent, but know there is some grain and a good deal of the film takes place at night and the lighting was less than spectacular during shooting. The audio, presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo, comes across okay, but again, it's nothing spectacular. Extras are limited to a small promotional photo gallery (four, count `em four shots), a short, original trailer, and previews for other Shriek Show DVD releases like Shadow: Dead Riot (2006), Death Trance (2005), The Being (1983), and Neighbour No. 13 (2005).

A long forgotten, underrated gem that highly deserves the DVD treatment.......2005-11-03
This deeply touching story unfolds with young campers in the woods, in tender moments discovering the mysteries of love while suitably sappy music plays in the background. The relaxing, quiet, dark, romantic atmosphere is suddenly shattered when they mysteriously disappear one at a time. No one hears their bloodcurdling screams of fright! Something is out there!
Well, it's nothing to worry about, really..it semms two elderly mechanics (Aldo Ray, Neville Brand) abduct them and take them to a nearby hospital where space vampires have taken over and need fresh blood for rejuvenation experiments so they can live 200 years or so.
The plot/storyline is quite basic but the cinematography is top notch for a film with a low budget. It also features John Carradine, Julie Newmar, and Tina Louise (Ginger from Gilligan's Island), as well as a small part by Tony O'Dell (from the 80s sitcom Head of the Class). Fresh performances by an ensemble cast for sure.
I would have rewritten the script - the first ten minutes basically explain the whole film - why not show the hospital/mechanics near the end of the film, and just have some clues so the viewer can try and piece together the puzzle as to why the campers are disappearing? Most of the film concerns the young people trying to escape the clutches of the mechanics. Even so, there is a decent amount of gore and shocks to recommend it for horror fans.
The film definitely succeeds in its tone - everything is played straight and serious - creating a highly campy atmosphere as the characters try to get out of their disastrous, ludicrious predicament.
Since this has long been out of print by Lightning Video, I would like to contact Media Blasters so they can release this on DVD (hey, it's better than some of the crap they are passing off as entertainment), but their website appears to be down indefinitely..
A DVD/actor commentary would be a dream come true..I would love to hear how the story evolved, when and where it was filmed, behind the scenes information, etc.
I would even buy this on LASERDISC if available, yes, I'm serious! Anyone involved with this masterpiece, post a message please!!

Customer Reviews:
come on!.......2007-03-23
Man, get a clue you people! This so-called "anti-catholic" film was released in the 1970s (during a period of intense social repression in Czechoslovakia) not because it was too "weird" for the censors, but because the original writer of the novel, Vitezslav Nezval, was one of the most celebrated communist poets of the 20th century. He was an upper ranking bureaucrat in the Ministry of Information during the Communist seizure of power in 1948, and in the 1950s became the personal secretary of Vaclav Kopecky, the most powerful (and feared) communist in Stalinist Czechoslovakia. Why do you assume that a good piece of artwork from a communist country must necessarily be anti-communist, or that artwork made by communists must necessarily be garbage propaganda? Get a history book. At any rate this has nothing to do with the film itself, which was released under a brutal political regime in the 1970s, and just happens to be excellent.
Good surrealistic film, with some reservations.......2007-01-30
This 1970 film from Czechoslovakia is a surrealistic movie that deals with a teenage girl bizarre dreams after reaching puberty. The film is certainly imaginative, has very strong visuals, is submerged in lovely central European folklore and is shot in luscious color. But what bothered me a little was something else: the constant mockery of the Catholic Church. Here one must say that the Catholic Church was not the most oppressive institution in Czechoslovakia in 1970. Rather, this was the time of the communist repression after the breakup of the Prague Spring. So, in light of this, these shots against a potential enemy of the communist regime seem a bit politically opportunistic, and gives a somewhat bad taste to an otherwise fine film.
Eccentric Cult Classic.......2006-06-14
I suppose "Valerie" (1970) was a belated product of the Czech New Wave but it comes after the Prague Spring / Russian invasion. It was probably too surreal for the commissars & censors to bother with. In the West it became a cult favourite in the days when people smoked illicit substances at late night screenings in indie cinemas.
Valerie is the young heroine, she has her first period but fortunately she's got these magic ear-rings, however everyone in her rustic village seems to be lusting with nature or turning into vampires. Well, I hope that makes the plot clear. It must be something to do with that favourite 60s theme: "a young girl's sexual awakening." It's quite effective in conjuring a sense of anxious adolescent reverie in which everything familiar becomes erotic or strange.
The film is structured by extreme montage, which is all over the place & makes Nic Roeg look moderate. It's beautifully shot and extremely picturesque. The movie is being marketed as a cult item once more. I can't imagine fans of Eurotica or horror finding much of interest in "Valerie". However the excellent British pop band Broadcast did base their "Ha Ha Sound" album around this film, so it clearly does appeal to some contemporary cult music/film fans.
Surreal adult fairy-tale from the czech republic.......2005-07-02
Closely inspired in the nightmarish novel of czech poet and writer Vitezlav Nezval, which in its turn is inspired in Gothic imaginary and fairy tales, this surreal symbolic vampire fable directed with fine irony by Jaromil Jires ( " The joke ", adaptation to the big screen of Kundera's novel ) narrates the bizarre adventures of a innocent bourgeois teenage girl during the week she begins to puberty, surrounded in a succesion of sexual fantasies ruled by a vampire named Tchor from whom obscure influence gets to flee with the help of her magic earrings in an oniric journey in which Lewis Carroll and the Marquis de Sade could perfectly be her travelling partners. The movie is filmed in a subtle narrative way that reminds Fellini's films from the 60's ( for instance: " Giulietta degli spiriti ", " Fellini- Satyricon " ) where the frontier between dreams and " reality " vanishes. The way that the director chooses to conduct the film and its context allows to read the bizarre world and erotic symbolism that surrounds to the protagonist as a subjectivetion of a familiar and represive setting that suddenly becomes strange to her innocent and anxious eyes by the effect of her sexual awakening. Shot after the russian invasion to Prague the film contains also a melancholy political allegory about the unfair situation in which lived most of the czech citizens during the years of the dictatorship.
culture wars of third kind.......2005-04-12
I enjoy this type of stuff; Senor Nietsche says - I lived in Czech Republic for most of the Nineties - but why did he ?? He is definitely a Norteamericano - a self appointed anti-didact, he knows what he likes.... There are certainly some mediocre or even bad Czech films, but "VALERIE" is not one of them. The tradition of European film-making leaves the creative gate open much wider than Hollywood could ever allow - for a good reason, mind you. Look at the majority of the "target" audience, they would really rather see "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" than "The Candidate". We saw the "Mr. Smith" at the FAMU (Czech film school) in 1956-57, and we all laughed at the Frank Capra's silliness and naivete. It only gave me an idea to eventually come to the U.S. and "make it" there, because the fiber of the society seemed too melodramatic to withstand the cynicism of the sneaky white European newcomers.
I could respect a devastating review of "VALERIE" by someone who could list some other un-american cinematic styles that he/she finds highly irritating, also listing the reasons "WHY"... To help such persons, I could mention Godard, DeSicca, Antonioni, Bergman and yes, Tarkovsky, among other major cinematic irritants.
But nothing but "holier than thou" diatribes can be expected right now, perhaps when the authors of such will relax a bit and take a deep look at other peoples' imagination an actually see certain poetry going on there (without guns and special effects), then we will have arrived.
I realize that this is not a review of this film - this would take some multiple pages - it is merely a counterpoint to those previous writers. "Asinine" is spelled with a double "S", and I spent my first 27 years of my life in Czechoslovakia. So there, if you can learn your native language, Mr.Nietsche, you can even pose as an intellectual.

I LOVE THIS MOVE. AND I BELIEVE YOU WILL ALSO, JUST FORGET THE QUALITY AND YOU WILL IN JOY THIS MOVIE, ITS FUN. BUT A GOOD DAMN PLOT!!!
Scarey?.......2006-02-15
I happened to see this flick while in Detroit when it came out. Being the only White Guy in the theatre was actually scarier than the movie, but, still, it's a cool thrill. You aren't a Vampire Afficionado if you don't have this in your collection.
Cheaply made but entertaining in a three star way.......2006-02-13
The mother isn't given any dialogue? What movie was this guy watching? She has dialogue prior to the rape, while at the hospital arguing with the doctor who is trying to talk her into getting rid of the baby, after giving birth, and while trying to nurse the child.
I've always been a fan of William Smith. The ending was kind of off beat and corny, but all in all it's fairly entertaining.
Don't bother.......2004-03-11
While it does manage a couple of creepy scenes, this film is basically a low budget, drive-in movie that doesn't deliver much.

Customer Reviews:
A romantic experimental film.......2004-09-15
An original, subversive and boldness film that talks better than any other of Rollin's movies about his peculiar conception of cinema:a mixture of gothic horror imaginary, politic surrealism, dark romanticism and pulp sexy comic book aesthetic, and supported in camera experimentation and improvised performances . The film is conceived as a collage of images, following the estructure of his favourite painter, Clovis Trouille, solution that allows him to blends much of the referents that conform his ambiguous imagination joining with talent Gothic and romantic tradition with avant-garde concepts and experimentation . This is :the oniric poetry of Tristan Corbiere, the sexy shocker surrealism of Georges Bataille, the provocative and anticlerical cinema of Luis Bunuel, the bizarro and pulp melodrama style of Gaston Leroux and the poetic realism of Jacques Prevert. The picture is shown as a film in two parts, working the closing credits of the first one as an inflexion or keyhole to a surreal vampire tale . An amoral, ludic and non-narrative vampire's picture, half romantic, half conceptual and totally experimental.
Um.....What?.......2004-05-25
I decided to give Rape of the Vampire a spin, because I love the old B&W horror movies: Dracula, Frankenstein, Christopher Lee, Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney, etc.
I also love cheesy horror flicks, both old and new.
But Rape of the Vampire falls into neither classic, nor artistic, nor cheesy-good. It is simply horrible.
In high school, we made a film called Captain Ecology, which could possibly rival this film on editing and plot and acting. Just count your lucky stars that it will never show up for sale anywhere. Feel disappointed? Then go ahead and pick up this piece of ripened cheese.
Filmed originally in 1968 as a short, this French film was literally booed at its opening. Quite risqué for its time, there was plenty of blood and nudity, and perhaps fans of the genre weren't ready for such bold entertainment; or perhaps they knew a bad movie when they saw it. Today, it will seem tame, but it still has the capacity to bore you to tears.
Filmed entirely in B&W and subtitled in English, the story is irritatingly (I'm sure it was meant to be artistic) interspersed with random flashes of inconsequential scenes, and the editing is jerky and poorly done even by high school standards.
The Plot? Well, if you can call it a plot, a group of four women wander about in diaphanous, sheer dresses, believing that they are vampires. After they all die in the first half, they are miraculously brought back to life for the second half, in which another vampire lady joins them and they finally grow teeth. That's about it. Oh, and there is some naked frolicking in the surf.
Rape of the Vampire isn't even Campy, it's just plain bad. If you want blood, buy a bloody movie. If you want nudity, buy a Playboy DVD. If you want artisitic, buy an art film that won an award somewhere. But stay away from this flick at all costs, unless you are truly a drooling Rollin fanatic.
it's great, it's boring, it's sorta [racy].......2003-10-10
not too rapey, pretty vampirey, pretty boring in a good way. this had great music, and some really beautiful shots, i have to say i do prefer color, and i wish there were trailers for similar films on these releases, but it's a five star for any 60-70s foreign vampire...lovers.
Confusing.......2003-01-08
Nobody buys a Jean Rollin film for the plot. Sit back and be boggled by visual delights, or disturbed by them.
This film is set in two parts and begins with four sisters who believe themselves to be vampires, and some ends up being one.
I can't explain much because, I have to admit, I didn't understand much of this film. But it looks good.
Great film!.......2002-03-01
One of Rollin's earliest, and best. Very sureal. A must for all Rollin fan's.
