Art-movie goddess Delphine Seyrig (Last Year at Marienbad) slinks through the plush Eurotrash settings as the deathless Elizabeth Bathory, Vampire Countess, in Harry Kümel's minor Dutch classic of lesbian erotic-gothic. Blood mingles with water during the languorous shower scenes. Set at an upper-crust seaside resort, the 1971 film recounts Bathory's plot to replace her current consort (Andrea Rau) with a fresher specimen, an abused newlywed whose brutal young husband is an inconvenience waiting to be eliminated. Although both the bi-sex and the neck-biting violence are tame by today's standards, the film has a graceful, gliding sense of pace that gets under your skin; something unspeakably kinky always seems to be just about to happen. It never quite does, but the mood lingers. See it with someone you love--or would like to. --David Chute

Description
International screen icon Delphine Seyrig (of LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD fame) stars as Elizabeth Bathory, an ageless Countess with a beautiful young 'companion' (Goth goddess Andrea Rau) and a legendary legacy of perversion. But when the two women seduce a troubled newlywed couple (French beauty Danielle Ouimet and John Karlen of DARK SHADOWS and CAGNEY & LACEY), they unleash a frenzy of sudden violence and depraved desire that shocked both art house audiences and grindhouse crowds worldwide.
Co-written and directed by Harry Kumel, DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS remains one of the most exquisitely mesmerizing adult horror films ever made. Blue Underground is proud to present the Director's Cut of this classic psychosexual shocker newly remastered in High Definition and packed with Extras, including brand new interviews with Harry Kumel, Danielle Ouimet, and Co-Writer/Co-Producer Pierre Drouot. Also included is a Bonus Disc featuring THE BLOOD SPATTERED BRIDE, a haunting shocker of reincarnation, lesbianism and violent murder from Writer/Director Vicente Aranda (LOVERS).

Gotta Love It.......2007-06-26
Okay, I am going to make this review short and sweet.
I never thought I would be a fan of movies like this
but after my curiosity drove me to watch Daughters of Darkness
I would not have it any other way. Delphine Seyrig is perfect
for the part of the Countess Elizabeth Bathory.
Her attitude is excellent and you feel yourself almost being
drawn to her. This is a must-see movie that will leave you
wanting more!
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......2007-06-13
this film is really really slow and boring. i cant tell you what happened becasue i kept falling asleep. i wasnt feeling much horror or eroticism or anything just weird borish people and slow boring dialogue. the only darkness i was feeling was the back of my eyelids.
Big Hype.......2007-05-16
I really wanted to like this film. I'm a big fan of Euro-trash, exploitation, low-budget horror, and "psychotronic" video in general, and all sources agreed that this was a "must see." So, I was understandably excited when this arrived -- I immediately popped it in the player, and sat wide-eyed, prepped for maximum enjoyment. Slowly (but not as slow as the plot of this film) it dawned on me: this movie is horrible. I don't want to just trash talk -- the technical aspects were good, the cinematography was nice, etc. But there is absolutely no action whatsoever. Everyone wants to talk about the great story, and true, the story is interesting in theory. But its portrayed in such a sluggish and boring style. The movie could have been about half as long and still developed the story fully. Also, I personally didn't find this film erotic at all. I understand there is a shorter version of this film -- that may help with the boredom, but it still isn't anywhere near as good as the hype. Obviously, a lot of people like this movie, but to be fair, its not really a horror movie, its not particularly erotic, and both the lesbianism and vampirism are almost completely implied; all of this is ok, except that the way most describe it, you would expect all of these things to be present. If you want an icredibly slow-paced, "moody" art film, this might be your thing; if you want an erotic horror movie, or a "lesbian vampire" movie, this probably isn't what you're looking for.
Stylish and Artistic.......2006-12-27
"Daughters of Darkness" crackles with repressed sexual energy and barely suppressed libidinous desire in a way uncommon for an early 1970's horror film. Eschewing the somewhat vulgar and obvious treatment of the same story by Hammer, made as "Countess Dracula", Belgian director Harry Kumel opts for an overly symbolic aesthetic that self consciously emulates European art cinema. The similarities to Alain Resnais' "Last Years in Marienbad" are notable in relation to casting, but also in the strangely isolated and ethereal hotel setting. Kumel also experiments with time and space in a non linear way. This is not to say that his film makes no narrative sense, in fact it easy to follow, but symbolic representations of time signified by the countess herself makes one question not only the films reality but also its temporality. Kumel also makes use of an intriguing colour scheme which privileges reds and greens as symbols of death, decay, but also regeneration. Perhaps the films most impressive aspect though is its almost total rejection of the iconography of the horror genre. For example we see no fangs, we so no drinking of blood, no familiars, in fact by the films conclusion we are not even 100% sure there has been any vampirism. This is a great film because Kumel takes exploitation material (lesbianism and vampirism) and places them in the background, preferring to privilege mood, ambience and an artistic formal strategy.
Blue Underground's DVD presents the film fully restored and uncut and in a sumptuous transfer. Also included in this edition is another treatment of the Countess Bathory story, the rather more exploitative "Blood Spattered Bride", this is a perfectly acceptable effort, but with a stronger emphasis on nudity and violence...But there is nothing wrong with that.
Four Stars for the Movie..........2006-11-01
Two stars for the version. I was heartened to see that this was a two-disc edition, as I figured it meant both the original version and the less-effective director's cut would be available. Alas, there is just a completely different movie on the second disc, and the headlining film is the lesser version. If you want to see this movie properly, with Delphine Seyrig's sung theme song, and tighter, more effective editing (why do we always suppose that meddling is an improvement?), you're going to have to get on EBay and find the original VHS, with the big, oversized box (not to be confused with the VHS of the original release of the director's cut). [NOTE: according to the comment below, the longer version came first, not second, as I had thought, so make of that what you will, although that hardly changes my opinion of the two versions.] It won't be DVD, and it won't be widescreen, but it will be worth it. When I first saw the director's cut, I was surprised by how saggy it made the film (and the dropping of that theme song is criminal). What a disappointment that the second DVD release of this film has not remedied the error, or at least given us both versions.
By the way--what is with giving an "unhelpful" review to reviews that don't recommend something, regardless of whether they have been helpful or not? It's kind of weird. I don't care if my review is tagged as unhelpful, esp if you actually think it is, but if you read a review and it doesn't say what you wanted it to say, that is not "unhelpful," it is "something you disagree with," and there is no rating system for that.

The film opens on a peaceful summer afternoon at the Masaki home in Okayama--where it's never peaceful for very long. A mysterious girl appears and begins calling Tenchi "Daddy." Predictably, she causes uproar among the women of the Masaki household. Ryoko takes an immediate dislike to her; Sasami quickly befriends her.
Mayuka was created by the demon Yuzuha, the embodiment of the Tree of Darkness. She fell in love with Yosho, Tenchi's grandfather, when he was a child on Jurai, but was driven away by his guards. After centuries of nursing her hatred, she plans to strike at Yosho through Tenchi. Ryoko and Tenchi battle Yuzuha in a weird netherworld filled with vicious but saccharine-looking toys. They finally defeat her with the help of Ayeka, who enables Tenchi to use his Jurai powers: he cleaves the demon in two with the Lighthawk sword. The second Tenchi feature is the oddest of the three, with the strongest conflicts among characters: Tenchi even loses his temper and slaps Ryoko. It's less playful than the other entries in the series, but still entertaining.
The one-hour feature comes with a Tenchi encyclopedia--different from the one included with the Tenchi Muyô! DVDs--that offers useful information about the characters, although its links are a bit temperamental.
Unrated; recommended for ages 12 and older for brief nudity and cartoon violence. --Charles Solomon
Description
On a hot summer day, a fetching young girl named Mayuka appears to Tenchi, calling him Daddy! Jealousy and envy follow as Ryoko and Ayeka battle for Tenchi's attention with an apparently new rival. Who could the mother be?! Hiding in the background, Yuzuha, the Demoness of Darkness, is about to get her revenge against Yosho for a grudge held for over 700 years! She begins her plan by using Mayuka to steal Tenchi away to the Dimension of Darkness. So it begins again, Tenchi must fight to save his friends and Mayuka, daughter or not!
Customer Reviews:
The Best Tenchi Movie I seen, well the only one but still............2006-03-29
I love this movie so much that i watched it a couple of times this past week. I felt sorry for Mayuka when that demon Yuzuha had control over a sweet girl like her. I recommend this movie to anyone exacctly or over 13 year of age.
it'll make you laugh.......2006-03-10
in this film tenchi finds out that he's a father and the news has some interesting results on the rest of the masaki household, but it is mainly ryoko who is more annoyed with tenchi's daughter mayuka. this film has some interesting moments and is a film definetly for fans of the tenchi series
Good except.......2005-09-17
Another Tenchi movie, it is wonderful. Thea animation is good and so are the voices. Well, at the same time, it is another one not based on the OVA version, (I wonder why they haven't thought of making one based on the OVA series? Why)? and the other movies act like this never happened! Buy yet it still continues to bring the feel of the TV series, and the comedy as well, and this is also gives some background to Yosho's childhood, and it would make think, he seems to be like Tenchi, before he was born and when he was young that is! Anyway, this is a wonderful work, gotta love that Mayuka, and the way she refers to her daddy.
12 and older: brief nudity and cartoon violence
A Hilarious Truth Of Life.......2005-03-27
I really did enjoy this one! Out of the three Tenchi Movies, its my second favorite. I would DEFINATELY NOT recomend this movie for children!!! It is somewhat comfuseing and has brief shots of nudity in it. Though I though the way Meyuka acted towards Tenshi was hillarious (it reminded me of the way I act to my dad, very slightly, but Meyuke seems less mature...)! It is a very sweet movie and I would recommend it for when you have a gathering of friends.
Awesome. It's been 3 years and I still love it..........2005-01-10
I watched this with my big sister about three years ago. I loved it then and still love it now. It was definitely my favorite of all the Tenchi movies.
If you haven't already read the summary... A young girl named Mayuka appears insisting on calling Tenchi, "Daddy". She appears to have no memory of anything except her daddy for some reason.
As Washu tries to decode the girls genetics, Ryoko and Ayeka, instead of directing their jealousy towards each other, they aim it towards Mayuka (physically most of the jealousy comes from Ryoko).
I would recommend this DVD for Ryoko and Tenchi fans, since the other couplings don't appear often, if at all.
Warning! There is some nudity, but very brief.
Lastly, I will conclude with saying that this is definite must-see for Tenchi fans. Tenchi must fight to save the ones he cares for as the ultimate battle between Light and Darkness occurs.

Great idea, but weak writing and production ruins it!.......2005-06-29
This one started out quite good! Two very attractive & kinky lesbian vampires (Darian Caine and A.J. Khan) kidnap a sexy Goth girl (Katie Jordan) to play with and then devour. Katie is incredibly cute as the victim, and she's got a gorgeous hot body, but she wasn't provided with much of a script and it showed. Both A.J. Khan and Darian Caine looked good as the female vamps, but they also appeared to run out of material and were seemingly forced to wing it with repetitive dialogue. A.J. Khan is well-cast in a dominant role, but they've got to provide her with a script of sorts. That clearly wasn't done here. Also, I thought the attention paid to Katie's luscious body too often ignored her gorgeous rear end. My opinion only.
The end result is a potentially erotic video idea that in reality is poorly executed. Nobody really knows what they're doing until the end when the two vampire women both simultaneously put the bite on pretty Katie. It's an amateurish effort and it shows in the final production.

"Naked girls and lots of blood, that's what Vampyres is about," says Joseph Larraz in the notes to the film. He rewrites the vampire myth to make his bloodsucking lovelies the restless ghosts of lesbian lovers murdered while making love in their shadowy castle. Reappearing nightly in the twilight forest, they lure men to their castle for blood feasts until the brunette vampire, Fran (Marianne Morris), falls for her latest victim (Murray Brown) and decides to keep him alive, a sex slave she slowly drains dry. "You're playing a dangerous game," warns blonde Miriam (Anulka), perhaps just a tad jealous. As the local cops watch a veritable wrecking yard of car crashes fill up the sleepy back roads (all with naked dead men behind the wheels), you have to wonder if anyone finds this a bit suspicious. It's a slim story filled with misty forests, candlelit castle interiors, and the above-mentioned blood and naked flesh. Larraz adds a few poetic flourishes--blood dripping down pale faces, clouds crawling past a castle--but, more important, gives the living dead girls a genuinely passionate relationship and a zest for nightlife. The DVD features commentary by Larraz and producer Brian Smedley-Ashton. --Sean Axmaker

I really liked the opening scene. but then i fell asleep.
im sure i missed all the good parts but its sooooo freakin slow. this film is the cure for insomnia.
"By This Sign I'll Recognize You".......2007-01-07
In the dark Romantic universe called "gothic" there are only a few things that matter: Love & Death, Sex & Death, Beauty & Death.
Fran (Marianne Morris) and Miriam (Anulka), the vamp protagonists of Larraz's "Vampyres," embody these essential qualities: they are dead, in love with each other, sexually active (and how!), and endowed with the sublime beauty characteristic of supernatural raptors. Of course their sanguinary habits provide an added enticement--a kind of icing on the macabre cake! Indeed nothing says Gothic Elegance like knife-wielding revenants ensconced in an English manor...
These unusual Heroines ask for more than acceptance: they require a viewer's admiration, adoration. Unimaginative twerps who can resist the girls' magic should certainly stick to the latest Hollywood extravaganzas, leaving "Vampyres" to the accursed Visionary Few (to whom the film rightly belongs).
Sexiest Vampires Ever!.......2006-08-22
One thing this & many other vampire films are faulted for is having vampires that move in the daylight. However, it should be noted that all the 19th century literature allowed for this as well, including Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. I believe it was not until the 1920's that this restriction was imposed on vampires, & it was an instrument of film, rather than literature.
That said, here's what i think works about it. #1, two very sexy women playing the vampires! No brainer on the lure here, but what is interesting is that they don't "look" like movie stars! They just look like 2 very attractive women you may, & have met in real life. This adds immensely to the largercredibility of the film IMO.
#2, Fearless portyayal of the vampiric union with blood, sex, & death. Call it exploitation, sexploitation, slasher, gore, pornography, trash... whatever you like. Ever since the early 19th century blood, sex, & death, have formed an inseperable, unholy trinity in vampirism. The candidness of this in "Vampyres" may appear over the top at a glance, but look again. This aspect of the vampire has been consistent through 200 years of literature. Lets take a deep breath, & try to be honest about what we have really been reading!
#3, a spectacularly thematic setting! It was a great rural spot, old run-down manor/castle in the early fall. Few vampire movies, or any other horror movies have matched the mood setting location this one enjoys.
#4 an unusual ending for vampire films. While certain sequences were removed inexplicably, it still provides a refreshingly different conclusions than the huge majority of vampire films.
What didn't work? I wish we would have had a chance to hear the actors real voices. Voice dubbs are almost always the most irritating part of any foreign film. There are certain holes in the story. Pieces in the script & shooting did not recieve a proper introduction from viewer perspective, while others did not recieve a proper resolution. Though these were small pieces, i believe they could have added a lot for suspense in the movie, which was somewhat lacking i felt. This problem is rampant in horror movies from this period. Why the brevity, i don't understand? The finished movie is 89 minutes. Just another 10 minutes could have changed the story from skeletal into truly memorable. Thus 4 stars & not 5. Still, a great movie though, and imo, one of the very best vampire flicks.
This film could of been better if the Director took his time...........2006-03-26
I had read some the reviews before I seen this film regardless of some of the bad reviews. I eventually wanted to see it for myself and you know what some of these reviews stands correct.
While, there might not be much in the way of plot and some scenes don't entirely tie together, but gladly clichés or predictably don't have a big say in where this film heads. Yep that's right, it steers clear away from traditional vampire customs you see in other horror tales. Vampires are seen as sexual predators with the seductive suggestiveness and allegories usually associated with these mythological creatures, but here that's replaced with a relentlessly raw pleasure within the girls' raunchy acts of desire, flesh and lust. Where the ghastly violence and steamy sex become one ultimate fulfillment. When they dine on their victims it isn't graceful, but rather messy and immensely rough in nature. Those moments really take you by force on how unsparingly, intense these blood feasts really are. When they're in that mindset their sexual intentions becomes unstably feral and film's climax provides that terrifyingly unpleasant manner superbly. Larraz's isn't particularly trying to scare you or clutter the film with action, but to sprinkle an unnerving anxiety that's sustained by its underlying eeriness and sexually charged tension of the situation these innocent victims have got themselves into. Since the dialogue was rather sparse too there were many silent moments that helped create such increasing alienation with its sweepingly, strained sound effects.
The production might've been cheap, but the well-mounted cinematography was professionally crafted in capturing the booming surroundings with such memorable images and the tantalizing (if sometimes funky) score builds an alarming cloud of mystery where you can sense something is not right. The film's pacing is laid-back with many slow stretches and repetitive occurrences breaking through, but I never found it a dull viewing because of it. The performances were good all round, though nothing hugely spectacular because the characters aren't reasonably well defined and therefore there's a lack of emotional involvement towards them. Marianne Morris and Anulka Dziubinska play the two bombshell vampires Fran and Miriam who are voluptuously and mysterious in this story. Then you got the victims, which were played by Murray Brown, Brian Deacon and Sally Faulkner. The latter two play the young couple that sometimes feel like after-thought within the story.
Maybe the plot ponders about and the cheap foundation shows, but they worked around it neatly enough to create a compellingly, sort of stunning erotica that will probably feed your hunger. If your wondering if I had purchase this DVD not a chance........Netflix...
Fun & Sexy Romp.......2005-09-28
I rate vampire/horror movies as great, bad and terrible. "Bad" horror films can be a lot of fun with their unintentional goofs and silly occurrences. Great movies are rarely the low budget Hammer-type films, and terrible is simply that...terrible.
Vampyres falls somewhere in between great and bad to my surprise. The chemistry of the actors was superb, the vampyres always seemed to have a good time and there were some great sex scenes. The violence was pitched just right, and there was some creativity such as eschewing the traditional neck-biting for sliced bloodletting, the vampyres enjoying sex, wine and even a cigarette.
Unfortunately, the "moldering" castle looked like new to me, and the camping couple nearby was a bit annoying. Who would go camping in a tiny trailer near the castle, then sit and polish the silver?
However, another refreshing detail of this film was the lovely nude actresses had genuine breasts! Not something you see much of anymore. Get it guys? [...]
I very much enjoyed this film, it is now one of my favorites. I'm not sure if I'll let my husband see it though, he might really like it!
