Rumpelstiltskin is a classic Brothers Grimm tale about greed, magic, and the power of belief. In this 1987 musical version by Cannon Films, the boastful miller declares that his beautiful daughter Katie (Amy Miller) has the power to spin gold out of straw. The gold-loving King (Clive Revill) hears of her talent and demands that she spin gold for him. Katie looks to a magical and greedy elf (Billy Barty) for help, but is forced to pay him with her precious jewelry and the promise of her first-born child. Eventually, Katie's efforts for the King are rewarded with the dream-fulfilling privilege of marrying the Prince, but when their son is born, she must guess the elf's secret name or lose her precious son to the greedy elf. This production features several lovely songs and is wholesome family fun appropriate for children ages 3 and older. --Tami Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars the very first of the Cannon MovieTales.......2007-06-16

RUMPELSTILTSKIN was the very first installment of the Cannon MovieTales series in 1987. These great, family-friendly musicals have become quite popular and beloved over the years, and have now found their way to DVD.

"A promise made is a promise kept": that's the moral of this delightful fairytale which tells the story of Katie (Amy Irving), the beautiful miller's daughter who, according to her tale-telling father, can spin straw into gold. Of course, she cannot perform this task, but the greedy King Mezzer (Clive Revill), so taken with the concept of more wealth, demands that Katie spins the straw into strands of gold...or she will die. In the attic of the castle, Katie is visited by a strange little man, who offers to spin the gold...but for a price.

Amy Irving shines with a delicate performance; and reveals a lilting singing voice with such musical numbers as "Queen of the Castle", "I Need a Miracle", and "One Little Name". This film was very much a family affair for the Irving clan, because Amy's brother David Irving was the director, with their mother Priscilla Pointer as Queen Grizelda.

Clive Revill also turns in a suitably-hammy performance as the King; and Billy Barty commands with his wonderful turn in the title role. Yael Uziely is also very effective as the mute ladies' maid. John Moulder-Brown plays Prince Henry.

This was the premiere installment of the Cannon MovieTales series (which were filmed, very economically, back-to-back on location in Israel); however the subsequent titles all went straight to video.

A fantastic family musical at a price that's bound to please--and be sure to seek out the other Cannon MovieTales titles!

(Single-sided, single-layer disc)

5 out of 5 stars beast version of the classic story to date.......2007-02-10

i really enjoyed this cannon movie tale. Like all the cannon movie tales exept red riding hood sticks to the origional story. Amy irving has such a pretty voice. You may recognise her from carrie and the sequel. This was the first of the 9 movies in the series. It was in theatres and it flopped even though i can't see why it did. After that the movies went str8 to vhs. I love the songs. My favorite is the one amy irving sings while she's trying to think of the name of the elf. I highly reccomend this whole series to anyone of any age who like me loves fairy tales. I'm so happy that i now own all the movies in the series

3 out of 5 stars A Fairy Tale with a Good Song........2007-02-05

Worth watching if only for the one song "One Little Name" sung by Amy Irving. All the songs are pleasant within this musical. Enjoyable.

A bragging miller gets his daughter in a jam. She must spin straw into gold for a greedy king. She makes a bargain with a "bad" elf. When she becomes princess, she must guess the elf's name or give him her baby.

Production analysis:

Beginning from the inside, out: Roy Disney Jr. was a little boy, when Walt Disney began production on "Snow White". Roy Jr. was sick one day, and Walt came and spent an hour telling him the story of "Snow White". Later when Roy Jr. saw the movie in the theater, he was disappointed, Walt had told it better. "Snow White" was a great film. What an amazing statement, to say that Walt had told it better. Walt was a great storyteller. Walt told his animators the story of "Snow White". Walt had the best animators in the world, yet their early drawings of the dwarves were without personality compared with the final film. The animators kept coming back to Walt. Walt would say, "no, Dopey is playful but thoughtful, creative, trusting, and a little taller and thinner than the other dwarves". Walt was a great storyteller who began from the inside, out, with character.

If you begin from the outside, in, casting talent, or who you know, rather than casting to fit the personality of the character in the mind of the storyteller, you have to re-write for who you've got. The "Andy Griffith Show" began intending for the Barney Fife character to have only a couple lines, in an occasional episode. Once the writers saw who they had in Don Knotts, they re-wrote the entire show to make him the star.

Starting from the inside, with character, gives the right words, right costume, right set, all fitting. Here, the costumes do not always show the right personality, but they are pretty costumes. When they saw that Billy Barty was charming as the rhyming "bad" elf, they should have re-written the story to make him a good elf throughout. It does not work with him being good and bad both. They should have given him a bad brother. Likewise, the prince contradicts himself standing up for the princess one moment, then giving into the king's harm against her in the next. The audience does not miss this, and it hurts the prince when he sings. The prince is a good singer, and without the contradiction his singing would have been accepted as sincere. Amy Irving's personality comes out best in the song "One Little Name".

"Hansel and Gretel" by the same studio is good too, with a witch with a lot of personality, probably doing a lot of ad-libbing.

5 out of 5 stars A Really Good Classic.......2007-01-11

My daughter was very happy to open up her present and see that it was a DVD for Rumpelstiltskin. We had taped it once a long time ago and most of it had gotten taped over. She is 13 but I, her mother, enjoyed this movie, as well as my 19 yr. and 22 yr. old sons, and my 25 yr. old married daughter. I am not exactly sure what it is about this movie that we all like, but we just find it very, very watchable.

5 out of 5 stars Rumpelstiltskin.......2005-10-03

This fairy tale has beautiful sets and scenery, vivid costumes, great music, a charming story, good acting, the incomparable Amy Irving both acting and singing, and nice special effects.
I watched it with my great nieces, who are products of the robot/cartoon age, and they sat enraptured, except when they weren't laughing at the dwarf or asking me what a tax collector is. The King and Queen are hilarious. This is one for your collection; you have to see it.

3 out of 5 stars fairy tale turned horror tale!.......2006-11-03

the movie rumplestiltskin was, to me, more of a comedy than a horror film! kim johnston ulrich took a classic childrens fable and made it into a decent horror film :) the effects in this movie aren't that great.. and the quality of the film is low but overall it's a good watch for those interested in childrens fables turned horror. if you are interested in such.. maybe you'd like pinnochio's revenge along with this one.

2 out of 5 stars Not so Scary for a Horror Movie.......2006-09-08

Rumpelstiltskin is a movie I recorded off of a paid channel years ago. I only recently sat down and rewatched it. This movie is from the same people that did Leprechaun, (no surprise there), since this movie is about a little deformed creature man.

The movie is about pregnant woman whose husband dies in the line of duty. Sometime has passed since his death and she's had the baby. Now she visits a pawn shop where she finds this unique looking jade and gold statue. She takes the statue home, and finds herself wishing her husband could see his baby. Well, Rumpelstiltskin "grants" her wish, and in return she must now give him her first child. He terrorizes her through the whole movie, and kills the people that gets in his way.

Watching the movie, I noticed there wasn't really any blood in it, and it wasn't all that scary. I found myself getting bored halfway through the movie. I must say that the make up effects on Rumpelstiltskin was pretty realistic looking and creepy. The movie seemed like more of an action movie with a deformed little man as the bad guy, instead of a horror movie.

It wasn't very original either, it reminded me too much of Leprechaun, with a little man terrorizing the characters of the movie untill he gets what he's after, and killing everyone that gets in his way. Same basic plot of Leprechaun, only worse with no blood. It wasn't the worse movie I've seen, but it wasn't all that great, and it didn't creep me out one bit for a horror movie.

3 out of 5 stars Not Scary But Funny!!.......2005-07-23

Rumpelstiltskin is not really a horror movie..its more of a comedy.LOL its a little hunchback riding a harley..yea see wat I mean ...not scary!!So if you like weird and interesting movies...see this!!

NOT SCARY BUT FUNNY!!!

2 out of 5 stars More like "Rumpled-Crap-Film.......2005-05-13

Ha ha ha. Okay, okay, I never even watched the movie. i just wanted to type that, but if it is anything like Leprechaun, then it sucks and I was right.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Horror-Comedy from the director of Leprechaun.......2005-03-20

Mark Jones who directed the 1993 classic "Leprechaun" directed this similar horror-comedy with the title character Rumpelstiltskin who rips a man's eye out and then is turned into a green rock by a witch and then dumped into a river and then the movie starts in L.A. with a cop being shot by a criminal and then his wife and her friend visit an antique shop and then the mom sees the green rock of Rumpelstiltskin and then buys it but then the creature comes alive and then wants her baby and then she runs off with her baby and then the creature follows her and then the fun starts. The movie is basically a rip-off of Leprechaun but instead of a creature wanting a pot of gold the the creature wants a baby. The low-budget is lower than Leprechaun and the special effects by Kevin Yagher(Child's Play 2,Phantom of the Opera(1989),976-EVIL)are decent for a low-budget,the acting was mediocre and the only good acting was by Max Grodenchik who played Rumpelstiltskin. The movie is out-of-print but if you do find it rent it.

Pros:
Good Special Effects/Makeup
Some funny scenes

Cons:
Some bad acting
plot is sometimes poorly written

2 out of 5 stars Faerie Tale Theater rocks but I hate this story...........2006-01-30

I have been a fan of the Faerie Tale Theater series since I was a little kid, and I just recently was given the DVD box set of all the movies for Christmas. I love these movies, but this specific story upsets me every time I see it! I have never understood how anyone could actually enjoy this tale. Shelley Duvall plays the millers daughter, who is handed over to the greedy, annoying, money hungry King played by Ed Begley Jr, after the King is told she can spin straw into gold. Well, Shelley Duvall CAN'T spin straw into gold and she is honest with the king, but he warns her that he will kill her if she doesn't spin it into gold. Anyways, to make a long story short-she hires a little elvish creature-who she makes a fairly valid deal with-to save her life-and ends up cheating him in the long run. The two things that upset me about this story are the fact that the King is sooooooooooooooooooooooo incredibly evil and greedy, yet he gets everything in the end and is made out to be some sort of hero, and also the fact that poor Rumplestiltskin made a deal with a girl who decides to go back on it at the last minute. It wasn't his fault-he wanted a baby and she promised him one-so, what gives her the right to be some martyr in the end? I hate this story! My favorite Faerie Tale Theater creations are Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, The Three Little Pigs, Thumbelina and Pinnochio.

3 out of 5 stars Shelley Duvall and Herve Villechaize are superb.......2004-10-28

RUMPELSTILTSKIN is an average entry in the FAERIE TALE THEATRE series. Shelley Duvall, host and creator of the series, takes center stage as the winsome Miller's Daughter.

The Miller (Paul Dooley) is constantly telling tall tales, but his latest lie just might result in the death of his daughter (Shelley Duvall). When the Miller tells the King (Ned Beatty) that his daughter can spin straw into gold, the King orders she be brought to the palace to work her miracle.

Imprisoned in the palace, the Miller's Daughter is visited upon by a strange little man (Herve Villechaize) who helps her out of her dilemma. But will the price be more than the Miller's Daughter can pay?...

This is only the second episode in the series, and features fine acting from Duvall and Villechaize. A real charmer.

5 out of 5 stars Faerie Tale Theatre on DVD!.......2004-09-17

After years of waiting, Faerie Tale Theatre fans can finally own the series on DVD. Shelley Duvall's series originally appeared on Showtime 20 years ago and featured well-known and rising stars of the time. The series' campy enthusiasm for fairy tales has made it a cult classic. Better yet, the DVD prices are affordable, especially after the high prices the used VHS copies have been earning in recent years.

About this episode:

A miller's daughter receives help from a quaint little man when she needs it most, but not without agreeing to pay a dear price later. Finally she must guess her helper's name to keep her most precious treasure, her child.

Cast:
Herve Villechaize ... Rumplestiltskin
Ned Beatty ... The King
Shelley Duvall ... Miller's Daughter

5 out of 5 stars Herve Villechaize plays "Rumpelstiltskin"........2003-09-06

The lead role is played by Herve Villechaize(The Man With The Golden Gun, Fantasy Island [1977-tv], Return To Fantasy Island [1978-tv], Fantasy island tv series [1978-1984]).
