5 out of 5 stars Very Good Show.......2007-07-06

In a time of really bad TV (reality shows), this is a breathe of fresh
air from a swamp in crappy tv land.

If your going to waste your time watching tv, this is the show to waste it
on. Enjoy!

If you enjoy other good tv shows then I suggest the following:

Airwolf, MacGyver, Dallas, Walker: Texas Ranger, 7th Heaven, Miami Vice,
the Waltons, Magnum P.I, Knight Rider, Stargate: SG-1, Babylon 5, and
many others.

1 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2007-07-05

I just can't believe this show gets 4 stars and a half.
I would give 2, but to lower the average, i'm giving it the worst possible.
There are so many scenes that just don't make sense.
Example is, in the finale, Sylar even stops bullets, but easily gets stabbed by Hiro who just runs into him with a sword without using his power.
Those scenes just let me down so badly.
Also, People who read subs may not feel the same way, but those who play Japanese people are the worst actors I have ever seen. Hiro may be Japanese but pretty much speaks in monotone. Ando is definitely Korean and he speaks Japanese fine, but not good enough to play the role. Hiro's sister is Japanese, but his father is not. They couldn't even hire two Japanese guys or what? Since I speak Japanese fluently, all of them are terrible actors to me. Just terrible.

5 out of 5 stars Are you on the list?.......2007-07-05

What happens when oridinary people begin to discover that they may not be so ordinary afer all? You get Heroes, a fantastic show that doesn't just stop and focus on the surface of its premise of people with extraordinary powers. The creators of the show take you deeper than that, bringing the audience on a journey into the lives of its characters, as they grow and evolve while coming to grips with their newfound abilities. From the first episode of the season to the last, the story builds, never revealing too much before it should, nor leaving the audience with too little at any time. With great writing and a great cast of talented actors, this is a show that keeps you wanting more.

2 out of 5 stars I was not a fan.......2007-07-03

I'm sure I'll get lots of comments about how I'm completely wrong about the series, I don't know anything, and I'm sure other things will be said. Simply enough I just didn't like the show.

Its really suprising to me because every single one of my friends love the show. I tried really hard to watch the whole first season and I've ground to a halt at episode 16.

Things I Like:
-- The voiceovers by the indian professor - not the old one, the young one. They are generally well written and give a decent vibe to each show. He basically introduces and closes each show with a voice over.
-- The acting is fairly good for a run of the mill TV show
-- In particular - the acting of Claire and Hiro. They are very likeable characters and it makes thier storylines very likeable.
-- the cheerleader and hero portions of the story. They do the best job of stressing individuals discovering thier power and how they deal with it in the context of understanding thier life.

I disliked

-- the sheer number of different storylines they tried to meld together. I felt that there were too many characters and in effect they tried to do entirely too much at once. It caused what I think to be a major weakness which is the short choppy scenes. As another reviewer mentioned you get about 1 to 2 minutes per scene before it jumps to someone else. I think at least a couple characters could have been cut from the storyline and it would have made the show feel less frenetic.

--Predictability - in general you can see almost any turn of events coming way in advance either because of deliberate writing or the way the director films give you a bit of a hint of whats coming. Mainly it seems to be the way the show is written.

-- I desperately didn't feel the need to include Ali Larter's family and Peter's brother. It almost seemed like they were added to give more drama to the show, but really I just kept wanting to fast forward through thier parts because I found thier characters grating and dull. While I see how they enter into the story, I also can see Heroes without them in it.

-- The are at times, and I know this is a generalization, where it felt like they forced Lost to have sex with X-Men and this show was the result. It was almost like Lost with people with special abilities. I admit I like Lost, and I like X-Men, and I even liked parts of Heroes....

End result..I didn't like Heroes and thought it could have been a lot better. I figured I would share my opinion so others could see a review that didn't just state "I hate it" without reasons.

5 out of 5 stars Hiro is number one!.......2007-06-28

What got me hooked on this show was the character Hiro. He is probably one of the most powerful but he hasn't quite figured out everything he can do. The place they leave us off with makes ya think hes gonna get even cooler :) travel through space and time or just stop time. lol. And his acting is awesome.

Peter has nothing in the beginning he just wants to help people. He eventually starts figuring out what he can do. I don't wanna say much more though or it'll spoil it.

I guess this show has something for everyone. Those are my two favorite characters and They keep me interested in the show. I epically wanna see Hiro and Peter kick some more butt.

When I can afford it I'll be buying this. I pretty much still have every episode on my computer.

The sixth installment of the Rocky series picks up the story of the Italian Stallion 16 years after the morose Rocky V. And sure, at his advanced age, Sylvester Stallone now looks like one of those sides of beef his character used to pound on. No matter. Somehow you buy the premise after all these years, even if it takes forever for Rocky Balboa to stop wallowing in self-pity (Adrian is dead, his old haunts are demolished) and get down to the business of drinking raw eggs and running up staircases. The business at hand is an unlikely exhibition fight with champion Mason Dixon (Antonio Tarver), which the near-sexagenarian Mr. Balboa has no business accepting. Of course, just as sure as the horns of Bill Conti's theme music are even now trumpeting through your head, the ol' Rock might have a punch or two left in him. Stallone wrote and directed, and there isn't much to say except that the movie steps in its pre-determined paces with a canny sense of what has come before (it's practically an homage to all the previous Rocky pictures, complete with fleeting flashbacks). Burt Young is around again, and Geraldine Hughes makes an appealing, rather chaste female companion for Rocky. Stallone's Rocky has gotten suspiciously articulate over the years, but he still knows how to slouch. If Stallone never forgets that, he can probably keep the franchise rolling. --Robert Horton

Forget about Australia fining Stallone for steroids! If he can make Rambo 4 as good as Rocky Balboa than I'm sold!

This movie really took me by surprise. I heard the premise and laughed my butt of! It sounds so stupid that I was suprised they made this movie, but I'm really glad they did :)

Stallone really makes you feel for and root for Rocky the whole way through. To see all the crap he's been through physically, emotionally, etc... really gets you feeling for the Rock.

And by the end you get this feeling that both you and Rocky and going through the same emotions. That connection that Stallone makes with the audience is rare in this day of film, and he does it so well that this may be his crowing achievement.

I really hope Rambo 4 is as good as this :)

4 out of 5 stars 'Rocky Balboa' puts the soul back into the franchise.......2007-06-24

Thankfully, they didn't decide to name this movie Rocky VI, so we can forget that the fifth one ever happened. This unexpectedly good followup (but hopefully finale) to the Rocky saga is a real treat.

In the first two Rocky movies we had the real story. A rags to riches fighter dealing with family and money and fame. Sure it's simple and plays like a soap opera, but it's the simplicity of it all that's great. The fighting was about dignity and pride.

Rocky three, while perhaps the most fun of the franchise, can't be taken as seriously. Pitting Hulk Hogan and Mr T. against Rocky was entertaining, but pretty much just fluff. And Rocky IV was way too cheesy for me.

With Rocky Balboa, you can forget all the pro wrestlers and the Russian steroid driven He-Men. The soul is back. Here we have Rocky dealing with his dead wife, his relationship with his son and making corny but heartful motivational speeches to his loved ones around him. Surprisingly, it all works really well. Even before the actual fight takes place, or is even proposed, it's hard not to be sucked up into Rocky's story of hardship in Philidelphia.

The fight that takes place is between the old retired champ and a cocky young fighter, Dixon, who wants to use the match to gain popularity. Dixon encourages Rocky to keep the fight simple so he can lose with dignity, but of course Rocky has none of it. Here he is out to shed the demons of his past and prove to himself one last time that it was all worthwhile.

Overall, this movie was really good; a great last harrah for the frachnise. Did this movie need to be made? Probably not, but with a bitter taste left in our mouths from V, it's good to have a real finale to this saga. The fight itself was good, but a little by the numbers and not as gritty or edge of your seat as we've seen from previous outtings, which really is the only reason for the missing star. But I recommend this to fans of the franchise and welcome it in my collection.

4 out of 5 stars Rocky Wins.......2007-06-23

A fitting finale to the Rocky (aka Rocko) saga. It was almost real-life iin the way it mirrored modern boxing's penchant for the ridiculous, aka wrestlemania. Decent enough script with interesting flash-flashbacks. A surprisingly good film.

5 out of 5 stars Best since #1.......2007-06-20

This is the best Rocky since the first one. Has all the heart and emotion of the first 2 and none of the fluff. In fact, if there wasn't a fight at the end, I would have been just as happy. (although the fight was great!) Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars I agree--the Best Rocky Movie Since the First.......2007-06-16

I never saw Rocky VI in the theaters late last year, but learned about it through DVD. I have watched it over 8 times and I am just amazed by it and cannot believe it did not get the attention it deserved. I guess the only saving grace is that for the most part, critics understood the movie, and had a soft spot in their heart for it. Movies are to entertain but to some directors/actors, the goal is to make a difference, to make a point. The way Rocky handled himself through the movie, through the depths of despair, while also facing the reality of his own aging, Rocky shows us how to rise above it all "The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows" he says, "It's a very mean and nasty place... and I don't care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently, if you let it. Not you, me or nobody, is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit... It's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward... it's about how much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. Now, if you know what you're worth, go out and get what your worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hits. And not pointing fingers saying: "You ain't what you wanna be because of him or her or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain't you! You're better than that!"

It is that single seen that allowed me to begin to deal with my own father's death and realize, "life sucks in so many ways, but fight it, don't let it knock you down, if you don't get up, life will keep you on the ground, permanently!

Bravo Rocky! Bravo Stallone! Thank you so much.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre, aged poorly.......2007-07-04

The plans to take over the world are no longer Rube Goldberg-esque concoctions pursued with zeal. In several classic episodes, these plans were brilliant parodies of the concoctions in movies. In this collection, the "best" are but pale, dumbed down imitations of their inspirations. Then there are a few that are minor retreads.

But most episodes use the P&B "plan" simply as a skeleton on which to hang a collection of immediate cultural and celebrity references. I found these episodes to be flat and joyless. Many of the references were short-lived and, although I recognized them, my reaction these many years later is "So what." The references that could have had some legs didn't have a hook to keep them fresh - they came across as old standard jokes.

Nothing illustrates this better than the contrast provided by the standout episode "Just say Narf". It took classic material (Donald O'Connor's "Make 'Em Laugh" from "Singing in the Rain") and put a decided P&B spin on it.

The most telling aspect of this volume is that several of the episodes have P&B as Hollywood actors, mirroring the large shift in perspective of the creative team. In early P&B, the perspective was of rebels and outsiders delighting in ridiculing the ridiculous in Hollywood. In this volume, they have devolved into Hollywood insiders who can only muster smirks.

If you are already a P&B fan, the memories and residual good will will probably make this volume moderately entertaining. But if you are new to P&B, you will likely be perplexed about what all the buzz was about.

5 out of 5 stars NARF!!!!!!.......2007-06-11

pinky and the brain has to be my favorite cartoon of all time. from bizzare plans to take over the world to even more bizarre plans to make those bizzare plans work, pinky and the brains shenanigans never get old. i grew up watching pinky and the brain, and they never get old. Strange and interesting characters, ranging from brains nemesis snowball, to pinky's horse/girlfriend, as well as the occasional anamaniac apperances, round out the outrageous cast of the show. The joy that they seem to take in slamming bill clinton and other famous figure (although mostly clinton), is just so infectious that you cant help but laugh. And even better are the deep themes that appear if you watch closely enough, but dont affect the hilarity of the show if you dont notice them, makes the show fun to watch for everyone. i even wrote a paper on one of the episodes for my compostion class. there will never be another cartoon of pinky and the brains caliber. this show is the perfect thing to enjoy with your children and friends. it may take some convincing to get them to watch, but once they do they will be hooked.
A Pinky and the Brain fan For life!

5 out of 5 stars World Domination -Round 3.......2007-05-31

By the time this show reached its third season, the joke was getting a little thinly spread. The plots became further away from the initial concept of two lab mice wanting to take over the world and more a showcase for the two lead characters' interaction. This however is not a criticism.
In TV the word 'formula' is dreaded. However, here the characters remain so endearing that the blueprint of every plot being vitually the same did not matter.
Most episodes followed this arc: -
1. Brain has a bizarre idea as to how to take over the world
2. To carry out this plan some equipment/money is needed
3. Brain comes up with an even more bizarre way to get said equipment/money
4. The plan fails due to Pinky's stupidity
5. The initial plan to take over the world is abandoned
6. Start over tomorrow night
Although there are exceptions, that basically sums up this and the previous two seasons but as the saying goes - If ain't broke don't fix it - and this formula was one that bore a lot of comedy fruit.
This show certainly beats some of the dross that graces our screens these days and had the nerve to demand that its audience had some intelligence.
Not laugh-a-minute but still a classic.
Ps .
I still can't believe that no-one has decided to revive these characters to star in a live-action movie (with CGI P&B of course).

Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet was unique in its day for casting kids in the play's pivotal roles of, well, kids. Seventeen-year-old Leonard Whiting and 15-year-old Olivia Hussey play the titular pair, the Bard's star-crossed lovers who defy a running feud between their families in order to be together in love. Typically played on stage and in previous film productions by adult actors, the innocent look and rawness of Whiting and Hussey resonated at the time with a burgeoning youth movement from San Francisco to Prague. The tragic romance at the center of the story also clicked with anti-authority sentiments, but even without that, Zeffirelli scores points by validating the ideals and passions of strong-willed adolescents. Less successful are scenes requiring the actors to have a fuller grasp of the text, though the best thing going remains the unambiguous duel between Romeo and Tybalt (Michael York). Lavishly photographed by Pasquale de Santis on location in Italy, this Romeo and Juliet brought a different tone and dimension to a story that had become tiresome in reverential presentations. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Romeo and Juliet.......2007-06-28

My favorite version of this oft-filmed classic is Zeffirelli's Oscar-nominated version. Starring two unknowns in the title roles (17-year-old Whiting and 15-year-old Hussey), the movie remains true to Shakespeare, while making the language more accessible to modern audiences. Both Michael York (as Romeo's nemesis, Tybalt) and Milo O'Shea (as Mercutio) lend strong support, while Zeffirelli's unabashed romanticism is enhanced by magnificent period detail and a sweeping score from Nino Rota. The story of youthful rebellion also spoke to basic issues arising in the restive sixties. A top-notch rendering of an eternal classic.

5 out of 5 stars Impression of Romeo & Juliet years after first seeing it........2007-06-16

I first saw the 1968 version of Romeo & Juliet the year it was released.
In our small town, we had only one theatre, and it showed the same movie
for about 5 days. I was studying Shakespeare in college and decided it
might be a good idea to see the film. The first viewing made such an
impression on me that I was left wanting more. I know I went the first
night it opened and then went every night again till it left the theatre.

In the period between 1968 & 2007, I didn't see the movie...even though
VHS & DVD releases made it possible. I'm not sure why I decided to see
it again...by accident, I guess. After so many years, I was surprised
to have the same emotions as I'd felt so long ago. Leonard Whiting &
Olivia Hussey are perfection in their title roles...both in appearance and delivery of the famous lines. If nither of them had never done anything else in their careers, they've left a lasting impression (as teenage actors) which will be ageless. Others may try to better this production of Shakespeare's famous play, but none will ever come even close to equalizing the 1968 production by Franco Zeffirelli. Do yourself a favor and buy the movie in DVD or VHS. You'll want to watch it again and again to see scenery you've missed and understand lines you've heard.

I've read some reviews indicating [...] aspects of the 1968 production.
These people need psychiatric help. Their repulsive suggestions toward
the acting/actors in this production couldn't be more off the mark.
There is nothing [...] or degrading about this movie.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Love Story.......2007-06-08

I saw this movie when I was in High School. I have LOVEd it ever since. The Nurse charater just cracks me up. Olivia Hussy was really beautiful. For you kids out there that think nothing existed before 1980, this version is just as good as the Leonardo DiCaprio version.

5 out of 5 stars The power of love. .......2007-05-25

I only have one thing to say. This movie shows what true love really is.

5 out of 5 stars "For never was a story of more woe Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.".......2007-04-28

I've loved it since I saw it first time - I was 16 and for me, Romeo and Juliet were not the Shakespeare's characters, they were just a girl and a boy who loved each other and died together because they could not live without each other. I did not know the names behind the production but I remember that the costumes were gorgeous (I still remember the red and gold dress Juliet wore in her first scene), the score and song were sweet and tender, and the cinematography brought to life a very real Verona, colorful and violent. Only much later I learned that Nino Rota was the composer, Danilo Donati a costume designer, and Pasqualino De Santis a cinematographer. Both Donati and De Santis won very well deserved Oscars.)

I was absolutely charmed by Olivia Hussey - she could be the most beautiful (and sensual and youngest) Juliet ever on screen. The only other film I've seen her was "Death on the Nile" - and she was not lost among very famous costars (Peter Ustinov, Bette Davis, and Angela Lansbury among others). I also remember that even though I was in love with Leonard Whiting's Romeo, I realized that as an actor he was much less interesting than John McEnry (whimsical Mercucio), Milo O'Shea (Friar Laurence) and Pat Heywood (the Nurse). Zeffirelli came from a successful career as an international opera designer and director in London, New York, and Milan with a reputation for opulent spectacle. It may explain his ability to handle crowds on the screen so effortlessly and skillfully. He also at one point of his career worked as Luchino Visconti's assistant - perhaps he learned a lot from him. In "Romeo and Juliet" he was able to make a very dynamic film that did not feel at all as an adapted play and also was a great romance which made me feel incredibly close to its characters. Four hundreds years seemed to disappear and Shakespeare became my contemporary. I've seen "Romeo and Juliet" many times and I believe Zeffirelli's is the best adaptation of the play. Well, there is of course, the ballet with the Sergey Prokofiev's music - but it is a different story altogether.

Although it wasn't a box-office success when originally released in 1958, Vertigo has since taken its deserved place as Alfred Hitchcock's greatest, most spellbinding, most deeply personal achievement. In fact, it consistently ranks among the top 10 movies ever made in the once-a-decade Sight & Sound international critics poll, placing at number 4 in the most recent survey. (Universal Pictures' spectacularly gorgeous 1996 restoration and rerelease of this 1958 Paramount production was a tremendous success with the public, too.) James Stewart plays a retired police detective who is hired by an old friend to follow his wife (a superb Kim Novak, in what becomes a double role), whom he suspects of being possessed by the spirit of a dead madwoman. The detective and the disturbed woman fall ("fall" is indeed the operative word) in love and...well, to give away any more of the story would be criminal. Shot around San Francisco (the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of the Legion of Honor are significant locations) and elsewhere in Northern California (the redwoods, Mission San Juan Batista) in rapturous Technicolor, Vertigo is as lovely as it is haunting. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Vertigo.......2007-06-27

Hitchcock's psychological tingler was not a huge success on release, but understandably has achieved cult status over time. Ambitious, dense and more than slightly twisted, "Vertigo" is both an elaborate puzzler and a meditation on man's basest fears and desires. Though perhaps a trifle old for the part, Stewart brings a barely suppressed desperation to Scotty that resonates, while Novak is ideal in a dual identity role, playing Madonna-like Madeleine, and the garish, earthy Judy, whom Scottie meets later in the saga. Glorious San Francisco locales, and a peerless Bernard Herrmann score complete this winning package from the master of suspense.

5 out of 5 stars Hitchcock at his trippiest..............2007-06-01

VERTIGO remains one of the most thought-provoking films I have ever seen. I still remember my first taste of this film (at least thirteen years ago!). It's safe to say (without exaggeration) that it changed my life and how I view cinematography. Yes, I know that is a tall statement to make about this movie, but it's well-merited. Why? For starters, Alfred Hitchcock's depiction of the medical condition of vertigo (extreme dizziness onset by perceived or actual drops in height--example: standing at the top of a tall staircase and glancing down at the ground floor from where you stand) feels like, both, a deep acid trip (complete with spinning imagery and disorientation), as well as a really extreme look at the effect of this condition on Scotty (James Stewart), a retired policeman, hired by an old friend to follow his beautiful wife (Kim Novak) who believes is possessed by the dead soul of a mad woman. Of course, this woman also has a penchant for ascending to great heights and attempting to jump off of them. This only adds another twist to Scotty's pursuit of the woman.

Alfred Hitchcock always had a flair for bringing the ironic, gothic and darkly comedic all to the foreground, in his films. Cinematography was one way he achieved (and manipulated) these emotions in the stories he wove so eloquently, on screeen. VERTIGO is no exception. What's more, Kim Novak is a very compelling and beautiful actress who stepped out of her more "cheesecake" roles to play the role of Madeleine, a very deeply disturbed (and perhaps, psychologically pursued?) woman with a secret. What's more, I love James Stewart, here. His relationship with Madeleine is conflicted and borders on pseudo-erotic. Of course, I won't divulge more plot details here. I just figured dropping that clue would tease and tantalize you enough to want to see this great film for yourself. I am so glad that it was given the kudos it deserved, with a re-released DVD addition. Great news!!!

4 out of 5 stars Criterion Collection would have done a superior job!.......2007-05-28

This mesmerizing film has been part of our culture for over a half-century. While it has its flaws -- especially in a script that reaches it's climax too early, and tacks on a final twist that is so unsatisfying-- it's a legacy film worth all the praise it has received.

James Stewart and Kim Novak are each remarkable, and the cinematography is perhaps the best of any Hitchcock film. Indeed, so many compelling moments in the film have no dialogue, the camera work is amazing. Bernard Hermann's score is consistently fine, though at times overbearing. The complexities of plot and use of symbols and colors throughout the movie are dazzing.

So why not five stars? Because Universal Home Video screwed up this particular remaster so badly, it interfered with my enjoyment in a BIG way. While the visual transfer is acceptable, the sound remastering is gruesome, with the score blasting several decibels above the voices, with reengineered sound effects produced on a Foley stage, and some critical dialogue marred by rolloff distortion. (Some viewers care about this stuff; others don't.)

Here's the beef. No corporation has the right to re-engineer a film -- especially one of this caliber -- in a way that alters the intent of the fimmaker. If one adds to that the weird balance of score and voice on the DVD, the occasional man-made distorion and trumped-up sound effects -- it's just not right. As for anamorphic widescreen, forget about it. It's not here.

I buy Criterion Collection remasters more than any because they are faithful to the originals, because their extras are meaningful, and because the company simply respects great movies. Their DVDs may cost a little more, but the payoff is worth it. Hopefully, Criterion will secure the rights to this beautiful chiller some day so the next generation can see it the way filmgoers did in the 1950's.

A wonderful psychological thriller poorly transferred and remastered by a company that should have known better.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling!.......2007-04-23

This timeless thriller is one I love to watch often on a Sunday afternoon. One of Alfred Hitchcock's greats! James Stewart plays the police detective Scottie Ferguson who suffers from vertigo when in high places after the accidental death of a police friend during a roof chase. The accidental death is partly Scottie's fault and he bears the mental scars. Before he can recover from one blow, he's given another when duped by a beautiful woman and an old friend who have a sinister plot and a part for Scottie to unwittingly play.

5 out of 5 stars One of Hitchock's best!.......2007-04-05

This haunting, mysterious, romantic movie about obsession is amazing every time I watch it. Although Hitchcock didn't originally cast Kim Novak as the source of Jimmy Stewart's affections, he later admitted that she made this movie what it is. The beautiful San Francisco Bay Area is truly a memorable "character" in this fabulous classic.

In this 1982 courtroom drama written by David Mamet and directed by Sidney Lumet, Paul Newman found the perfect role for a transitional period of his stellar career. As alcoholic Boston lawyer Frank Galvin, Newman shook off his screen persona as a handsome, blue-eyed hunk to portray an aging, weary man whose best years are behind him, with a shot-glass future that looks very bleak indeed. But when Galvin is given a chance to redeem himself--by proving medical negligence in the case of a comatose woman--he makes one final effort to regain his self-respect and tarnished reputation. He's an underdog against formidable odds, facing a powerful, politically connected lawyer (James Mason, slick as ever) who will do anything to win his case, regardless of professional ethics. Further complicating matters is a woman (Charlotte Rampling) who only appears to be worthy of Galvin's trust and love, until Galvin's best friend and colleague (Jack Warden) proves otherwise. Excellent as both courtroom drama and riveting character study, the film crackles with Mamet's sharp dialogue; and Lumet's direction is a brilliant example of forceful restraint. The film gave Newman one of the best roles of his career; many felt he deserved the Oscar (he lost to Ben Kingsley in Gandhi) that would belatedly be given to Newman for The Color of Money. Along with Hud, Cool Hand Luke, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Verdict ranks highly as a signature performance by one of America's all-time greatest actors. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Sidney Lumet's riveting courtroom drama earned five Oscar(r) nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor for Paul Newman's towering performance as a down-and-out alcoholic attorney who stumbles onto one last chance to redeem himself. When attorney Frank Calvin (Newman) is given an open-and-shut medical malpractice case that no one thinks he can win, he courageously decides to refuse a settlement from the hospital. Instead he takes the case, and the entire legal system, to court.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Newman's Finest Performance, in Tale of Redemption..........2007-06-22

In a career of unforgettable portrayals, "The Verdict" stands as Paul Newman's pinnacle; as a shattered idealistic lawyer, on an alcoholic road to self-destruction, finding a chance at redemption, he is absolutely perfect. With respect to Ben Kingsley, Newman SHOULD have won the 'Best Actor' Oscar in 1982!

Directed by Sidney Lumet, from a remarkably candid screenplay by David Mamet, this is a film that never makes a wrong step. Newman's 'Frank Galvin' is not heroic, or even likable, in the film's opening scenes, but he finds, in a simple malpractice suit, an injustice so blatant that he sees an opportunity to redeem himself...but he'll have to defeat a rich, duplicitous law firm (headed by legendary James Mason), argue before an indifferent judge (Milo O'Shea), and, worst of all, face betrayal from within his tiny circle of friends, if he has any hope of rising out of his personal 'hell'.

With a superb cast, including the remarkable Jack Warden as his ex-mentor/best friend, and Charlotte Rampling, as the woman he trusts far too much, "The Verdict" is raw, powerful, and occasionally disturbing, but never dull!

This new two-disc edition is certainly THE version to own, with commentary by Newman and Lumet, and an entire disc of extras, including Lumet and Newman's personal recollections, and several 'Making of' documentaries, from 1982, and today. You'll never find a more complete presentation of a truly extraordinary film!

There are few films that I can watch, again and again, and never grow tired of..."The Verdict" is one. Bravo to Newman, Lumet, Mamet, and everyone involved in creating this classic!

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing. .......2007-01-01

The Verdict is one of the most powerful films I've ever seen in my life. Frankly, I'm not sure what to rave over more--Newman's acting ability or the script itself. Imagining a physically gifted and charismatic man like Newman as an alcoholic loser on his last legs is not an easy thing to do, but his performance accomplishes this seamlessly. As for Mason, what a loss his death was because even nearing the end of his life he could do absolutely everything. His portrayal of Concannon is quite amazing. In O'Shea, Warden, and Rampling the lesser characters become quite major, and the courtroom finale is so good that I watched it several times over again. This should be on everyone's Top 50 list, in my humble opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Great film and an unforgettable acting performance.......2006-11-10

Frank Galvin (Paul Newman) is on a downward slide as an ambulence-chasing alcoholic lawyer when his associate (Jack Warden) tries to slap him out of his stupor in order to remind him that he is throwing away an opportunity to get back on his feet. Galvin starts going through the motions of collecting information about a case that involves a young child-bearing woman who suffered brain damage as a result of being given the wrong anaesthesia. Some of his old fight comes back to him when he starts to realize the negligence involved, and before he has thought much about it, he starts on the path of what he takes to be doing the right thing. But doing the right thing can be a formidible undertaking. He had once lost a prestigious job and his wife had divorced him after he tried to do right thing. Now, as he struggles to clear out the cobwebs, before he realizes it, he has managed to alienate almost everyone, including his previously very trusting clients, and faces almost all by himself a power structure that is aware of and capable of subverting his every move.

The judge (Milo O'Shea) is always eating in his chambers, the defense attorney (James Mason) and his legions of lawyers are constantly winking and nodding at each other: they are like caricatures used as devices to condense the viciousness of self-interest. The greatness of this film especially concerns the script and the acting force of Paul Newman. The contrast is striking between the muddled, uncertain man on the verge of being a complete failure and the flashes of brilliance that he shows as he fights with his back against the wall. Some of the oratory has a Shakespearian quality to it.

5 out of 5 stars There are no other cases. This is the case!.......2006-06-30

That was Paul Newman's response to Jack Warden, as Warden massages Mr. Newman's back and tries to assuage him by telling him there will be other cases. ( Pardon me, I always wanted to use the word ASSUAGE in a review ).
I live in Connecticut, and my wife and I drive thru Westport regularly, on our way to Trader Joe's. I know exactly where Mr. Newman lives,( I'll never tell ) and I always kid to my wife,
" I wonder what Paul is doing today? " Then I jokingly say that maybe we'll see him at Trader Joe's ( grocery store ) or at Mario's ( great place for lunch or dinner). Of course if I ever did actually meet him, I'd be stammering and babbling just like Jackie Gleason used to do in his old Honeymooner's television show. But enough of my dreaming. So, how was the movie? Sometimes there are events or moments in a movie that stay with you for a long time. In this movie, those times were: " There are no other cases..This is the case! " and the confrontation Mr. Newman had with the judge, when he proclaims, " I know about you! " as he taps his fingers on the judge's desk. Classic moments.
If I ever had a chance to become an actor, and had my pick of
acting coaches, one of them would be Paul Newman. I'm not sure how he does it, but somehow, after watching him on screen for a few moments, I forget he is Paul Newman, and believe he is the character he is portraying.I guess that's the " magic " of great acting. They make it look so effortless. And now onto Jack Warden. He is perhaps one of the most under-rated actors in history. A great performance from a great actor.
Back to Paul Newman. The next time you watch one of his movies, watch the pauses...the times when he's not speaking. It's the entire package that makes an actor great. It's the phrasing, the reaction, the eye movements, the pauses and how long he holds them. ( Sure the director has a lot of input too)- but just watch him. What you are witnessing is a STAR in action. As I write this ( June 29, 2006 ) Paul Newman is 81 years old. He may be a little slower, a little more wrinkled, but his acting just gets better with age. ( Watch Empire Falls ). I truly hope he makes more movies. And who knows, perhaps one day I WILL run into him at Trader Joe's or Mario's place. And in true Jackie Gleason form, say to him, " Hubba, Hubba, Hubba. "
And that, my friends, will be no act.

5 out of 5 stars The last gem of Sidney Lumet.......2006-04-18

This outstanding and bold director has always paid special attention respect the dark side of the state of things; like in this case where a lawyer practically out of the game due the drink, decides to assume a delicate case of unorthodox medical praxis. Please notice how Lumet works with grayish tunes in the lawyer ' s office to accent his personal drama.

Go for this emblematic film, where Paul Newman makes a delirious performance.

Jane Fonda's memorable, zero-gravity striptease during the opening credits of this 1968 Roger Vadim movie is the closest the film comes to a liberated marriage of wit and sex. Based on a French comic strip, the story concerns the adventures of a 41st-century woman, who pretty much gets it on with whomever asks. The sci-fi sets were pretty interesting at the time, though they look rather anachronistic now. Appreciated today mostly as a camp classic, the movie is actually more trying than anything else. --Tom Keogh

Worth it!

3 out of 5 stars Expired Cheese.......2007-05-25

I think "Barbarella" is best appreciated at a midnight showing with people shouting rude things at the screen. The flick is undermined by the lunkheaded direction of Roger Vadim. Did anybody explain to this guy that he was making camp? Also on display is some of the most garish art direction ever. Austin Powers would vomit. I did dig the shag carpeting in Barb's spaceship, though. What redeems this enterprise is the acting, not least Jane Fonda in the title role. Jane, consummate actress that she is, did understand the tongue-in-cheek aspects of the film. Jane's striptease over the opening credits is something to write home about. Good contributions are also given by David Hemings, Milo O'Shea, Anita Pallenberg, and Ugo Tognazzi. Venture into this flick for it's curiousity value and nothing else.

4 out of 5 stars "Your mission Barbarella: find Durand-Durand.".......2007-04-09

Jane Fonda stars in a title role of this famous cult sci-fi sex comedy as a space beauty in the variety of skimpy outfits. She looks great - all male (and female) creatures on a strange planet SoGo (Sodom and Gomorra?) drooled over her.

"Barbarella" (1968) directed by then Fonda's husband, Roger Vadim may be the silliest, the cheesiest, the campiest movie ever made but it is certainly one of the most entertaining comedies I've seen and is Fun with the capital "F". It is also very "pretty - pretty".

So, what do we have here? In the year 40.000, Barbarella "the Queen of the Galaxy" is sent by the President of Earth in search of the disappeared scientist named Durand Durand (finally I learned how the band got its name.) While looking for him, her space ship crashes on the planet Sogo where she encounters Pygar the Blind Angel (yes the man with the wings), Professor Ping - kind scientist (the celebrated and the finest mime artist Marcel Marceau in the rare speaking role), Dildano (David Hemmings of "Blowup") - the revolutionary who plots to overthrow the evil empire, Marcan - the barbarian who introduces Barbarella to an old fashioned love making (the advanced one is achieved by taking a pill and holding hands - welcome to the brave new world!) and The Great Tyrant - dangerous and very attractive ruler of Sogo (Anita Pallenberg, the object of Mick's, Brian's and Keith's desire and Mrs. Keith Richard at the time) who calls Barbarella "pretty-pretty" and invites her to come and play.

Fonda is quite good as a naive Barbarella and sometimes there is such an ironic and intelligent smile on her face that it should not surprise you what a fine actress she would eventually become.

5 out of 5 stars Barbarella is the unchallenged Queen of the Galaxy.......2007-03-18

After watching Jane Fonda as "Barbarella" I have nothing negative to say about her.

5 out of 5 stars Candy Floss.......2007-01-22

With a script by Terry Southern, author of Candy, this is the ultimate floss on the icing, and a totally memorable movie masterpiece. A brilliant plot, unforgettable dialogue ("de-crucify the angel, or I'll melt your face"), incredible special effects, stunning performances by all concerned. Subtle, deep and multi-layered. Maverick mad scientist invents a WMD and plans to rule the galaxy! Defeated by innocence, incompetence, sweetness and excessive sex! Not forgetting a flashy fashion quick-change every few minutes. What outfits! Very influential, and one of the milestone highlights of movie history, the full recognition of its unique merits lies in the distant future; but some of us, with remarkable prescience, can actually see that far ahead. All those sad, dull dumbos, who think it is just silly and camp, bad and boring, will be positronically erased and forgotten as the years, the centuries, the millennia and the stars roll by. Japanese filmmaker Masanori Hata made this above-average family film about a dog and a cat--friends with a tendency to make mischief--who go on an unanticipated adventure when one is rushed downriver and the other follows. Hata, who took four years to complete the work, relies on purely cinematic storytelling techniques (these animals don't have human voices on the soundtrack), making the film an international favorite. Dudley Moore narrates, but the film works because Hata's filmmaking fundamentals are so good. Kids love this, but adults can easily appreciate and enjoy it, too. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars just what I expected.......2007-06-26

This was one of my favorite movies growing up and now Im so happy I have it on DVD. Its just as I remember it.

4 out of 5 stars The Adventures of Milo and Otis.......2007-06-09

My son "lost" the DVD that we borrowed from the library, so this was a
replacement for that lost item. Thankfully you had it, otherwise, instead of 10.00, it would have cost us 20.00!

5 out of 5 stars A hit for kids as well as adults.......2007-05-20

This was the first movie my two-year-old son ever watched. He had a double ear infection and was whining and crying all day. Nothing would calm him down and make him feel better. So I popped in the DVD and he went from crying hysterically to laughing hysterically in, literally, five minutes. I sat down and watched the entire movie with him and loved it. My husband did too. We've watched it many times together since then. A year later and it's still his favorite movie. Sweet, funny, overall enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Great film.......2007-05-12

This is a timeless, very cute film. It is great for children (and adults) of all ages. I watched it when I was a kid and have passed it on to my kids to watch. They loved it!

3 out of 5 stars It's cute.......2007-05-10

It's a cute movie....I remember it being a lot better when I was younger. Nevertheless, it's enjoyable and a good movie.

Are you pondering what I'm pondering, animation fans? Yes! Pinky and the Brain have finally arrived on DVD, and they're going to take over the world! Well, at the very least, these genetically engineered lab mice are going to prove, once and for all, that they're the best comedy duo ever created for an animated series aimed at children.... but, why limit their appeal to kids? As executive producer Steven Spielberg said to the show's creators, he wanted this brilliant, Emmy®-winning half-hour cartoon series to lure adults into watching it with their kids, and like the classic Warner Brothers cartoons of the past, it's likely the grown-ups will enjoy it even more! This is largely due to the fact that Pinky and the Brain was produced under the radar, almost as if nobody was watching, so while this delightfully inventive spin-off from Animaniacs is purely entertaining for kids, it also includes a wide variety of in-jokes, movie spoofs, and outrageous dialogue that only older viewers can truly appreciate. It's all innocent fun, but if you watch and listen closely, you'll quickly realize that the writers and first-rate voice cast were having the time of their lives, inventing absurd plots and one-liners purely for their own creative pleasure. How else can you explain Pinky's bizarrely suggestive responses when The Brain asks "Are you pondering what I'm pondering?" or the hilarious send-ups of classic movies like The Third Man (spoofed here as "The Third Mouse"), The Manchurian Candidate ("The Pink Candidate"), and the tearjerking TV classic Brian's Song (satirized, of course, as "Brain's Song")?

Better yet, these 22 episodes culled from P&TB's four-season run (1995-98) demonstrate how the show's basic concept--two talking lab mice ("one is a genius, the other's insane") and their nightly attempts at global domination--lent itself to a broad spectrum of hilariously ingenious plots, with no restrictions of timeframe. So you've got episodes in ancient Egypt, Napoleonic France, and 1940s Vienna, along with contemporary schemes and shorter, time-filler episodes (like "Cheese Roll Call") that qualify as mini-masterpieces of educational comedy. "A Pinky and the Brain Christmas" is a bona-fide sentimental classic (offering proof that the Brain's got a soft heart, after all), and the polar-opposite pairing of Pinky and the Brain is just about perfect, largely due to the voice talents of Maurice LaMarche (expertly channeling Orson Welles as the Brain) and Emmy-winner Rob Paulsen as Pinky (both seen, to splendid effect, in disc 2's behind-the-scenes featurette). Additional voice talents include Roddy MacDowall (as the Brain's nemesis, Snowball) and Ernest Borgnine, but the show's primary strength is its go-for-broke writing, brilliant animation (a flawless homage to Warner Bros. tradition, yet uniquely styled to match the material), and music scores (mostly by Richard Stone) that pay tribute to the late, great WB cartoon composer Carl Stalling while incorporating frequent passages from the classical repertoire. All in all, Pinky and the Brain is perfect entertainment for the young and young-at-heart, destined for cult-favorite status as one of the best overlooked TV series of the 1990s. As Pinky might say, "Poit! Narf! Oh, this is SO much fun!" --Jeff Shannon

Description

Two lab mice, ("One is a genius, the other insane") living in the Acme labs seek to formulate a plan for the duo, led by Brain, to take over the world. Watch each episode as Pinky and the Brain take on each attempt with a dry wit and humor and likely a parody of other media. 22 Episodes from the Emmy Nominated Series for the first time on DVD

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Small rodents, huge mission........2007-06-30

"One is a genius, the other's insane."

The Emmy-nominated "Animaniacs" spin-off is now available on DVD with 22 great episodes on four discs.

Deep inside the Acme Laboratories live two small lab mice with one big and difficult goal: world domination. With the elaborate and ingenious plans of The Brain and the comic relief of Pinky, these little guys go the extra mile at their vicious attempts at ruling the world at any and every means possible. No matter how dangerous the operations may be, it always ends up in hilarious failure. Still, they always keep trying nonetheless.

Episodes like "Das Mouse", "Brainania", "Napoleon Brainaparte", "The Mouse of La Mancha", "Plan Brain From Outer Space", and "Brain's Song", these episodes will have you laughing and thinking how and why the world would be dominated by two little mice.

Also, check out the special feature, "Are You Pondering What I'm Pondering?" with voice director Andrea Romano and the voices of Pinky and Brain, Rob Paulsen and Maurice LaMarche as they discuss some of the great times working on the show with the great Steven Speilberg.

If YOU plan on global domination yourself, you'd better leave that to those tiny professionals. And for more plans and flubs by these guys, get the the show that gave them their big break, "Animaniacs", also available on DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Pinky and the Brain, Vol. 1.......2007-05-16

If you were ever a fan of this show, then this four disk set is for you. I own both Vols. 1 & 2, and I like Vol.1 much better. The extra features on it you can miss, but the content of the disks are well worth the money.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2007-05-09

I remember liking the series, which is why I picked it up. However, it was too long and not as good as Animaniacs.

5 out of 5 stars Proves Its Mousey Worth.......2007-03-10

Pinky and the Brain are two of the cleverest animated characters ever developed and the series is just perfect from the theme song to the many clever pop culture/political references. As others have said can be enjoyed at different levels by all age groups. A worthy heir to the dry humor crown of Rocky and Bullwinkle!

4 out of 5 stars Who doesn't love Pinky & the Brain?.......2007-03-10

The producers of Pinky and the Brain faced a challenge when they produced this series: How do you make the gimmick of taking over the world every week and failing entertaining? Poit!

Back in the 70s, DC Comics tried to publish a comic featuring The Joker. At the end of every issue the hero who guest starred was dragging the Joker off to jail, and made him a bigger joke than in the 60s TV series. Troz!

I have to admit that I didn't know I had to own this DVD collection until I watched it. Narf! It is maybe the funniest tv show, besides Animaniacs, produced in the 90s. Every movie and TV genre is parodied with charm. And the hallmark of a great show is that both kids and adults can enjoy it.

Are you pondering what I'm pondering?

Maybe it's time for a new Pinky and the Brain series! YES!

I LOVE this movie! Great performances all around. This remains one of my favorite comedies.

5 out of 5 stars The Dream Team review.......2007-02-15

This movie is hysterical. I've seen is several times but just showed it to friends. They laughed the entire time. The casting is superb and they are all excellent. Great story line. Probably not what most would expect from the title.

    5 out of 5 stars A Very Funny Movie.......2007-01-06

This is a very funny movie and very enjoyable. This will make you laugh and do we all ever need to.

3 out of 5 stars Univeral Studios DVD's do not have closed captions.......2006-12-08

I was very unhappy to discover that all Universal Studios DVDs do not have real closed captions for the deaf and hard of hearing, even though they say they have it in their product description and on the DVD box. What they really have is english subtitles with a few sounds identified. The subtitles are large, block the screen and jump all over the place. Worst of all, they do not identify who is speaking, making me have to guess who is saying what.

I am a big fan of Micheal Keaton, but Universal's deceptive marketing destroyed this film for me.

5 out of 5 stars Insanely funny movie, a true classic.......2006-08-14

One of the movies I remember seing in the theater back in 1989, just a great comedy then, and even better now that I have it on DVD. This is a movie about a Group of 4 men that are inpatients at a state hospital that are in the same therapy group. Their young doctor has been trying to blaze a new trail in their treatment, stopping all of their drugs and doing strickly therapy. Unfortunatly, its been going slow. As a booster, he has plans to take the group to a Yankees Game on a supervised pass. And yes, they get aproval. Unfortunately, the plan didn't go as expected. The Doctor disappears while taking his patient to find a restroom. Unfortunatley, the patient is a semi-cataonic schizophrenic that only speaks as
