Description

In the backwoods of Tennessee, an age-old curse resurfaces and takes revenge on a group of young kids on a weekend getaway at the family cabin. In 1921, the wicked James brothers plotted the murder of an old witch who lived up in the hollows in order to steal her land. As the hour came, she realized what was going to happen and on her terrifying deathbed, made an effigy of a scarecrow and cursed their family forever. Now, 60 years later, grandson Brett James decides to take a group of friends up to the hollows on a vacation, he has no idea that the deadly curse is still alive - and has been waiting to exact revenge...

As you can plainly see from the other reviewers they all think this is a terrible movie. They were being kind.

1 out of 5 stars FIELD OF SCREAMS.......2007-03-04

This third entry in the DARK HARVEST series is absolutely one of the worst movies to come around since PLAN NINE FROM OUTER SPACE. This one's not even campy though. The scarecrow changes its hood numerous times throughout the movie, and the threadbare plot has so many holes, it's like swiss cheese. A total waste of time...don't bother.

1 out of 5 stars horrible movie.......2007-01-10

this movie is so bad you would have to watch Plane 9 from Outer space to see one that is worse. Acting is horrible, writing is horrible, camera work is horrible....the entire movie is horrible. Best use for this DVD is as a coaster.

1 out of 5 stars aka Pure Crapfest 3.......2006-11-26

This season he takes his final bounty...

...And pray to God that neither he nor this series ever comes back!

In 1921, a voodoo-practicing witch stuffs a scarecrow with a brain, heart, and possibly other organs. The James brothers and their gang of moonlighters decide to take over the witch's territory and kill her in front of the scarecrow. As we may be able to assume from the back cover and un-dramatic flashbacks throughout the film, the scarecrow then goes on a brutal rampage and butchers the entire gang. The farm then peacefully gets passed down generation to generation within the James clan.

Fast-forward to 1981. A group of friends (who don't at all act like friends) is getting together for their yearly "hangout", a tradition they've maintained since high school (I'm going to assume these people didn't go to college) in order to keep in touch. This year, the "protagonist" Brett James (Clay Brocker) has decided that the group will spend the weekend at the aforementioned farm. And thus the dubiously similar setup to Dark Harvest (I) leads to the action...

Admittedly, the third installment boasts a few improvements over the first two films. Though the shoddy camerawork ranks somewhere between the absolute nadir seen in "The Maize" and that of the original, the "special effects" are grossly improved over the first two. The scarecrow killer is convincing enough as a horror-movie monster, and though certain scenes (such as one in which a victim is being "disemboweled" and she is clearly wearing a cardboard box full of organs that only vaguely look like human viscera under her shirt) are laughably bad, the effects are on the whole believable.

The direction is also superior to the crapfest work we saw in the first two films; the atmosphere is much more suspenseful (keep in mind, though, that on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the most suspenseful, this still ranks in at a solid 1).

Unfortunately, the "few" improvements mentioned above end here. Only one of the actors are competent (the blind preacher) - one even smiles while she is supposedly having a seizure/blackout! The dialogue, and indeed the whole plot, is woefully full of holes. For example, a man barges into the cabin to tell the others that his (Wife? Girlfriend?) has been taken by the scarecrow; a minute later, at the scene of the crime, he says "Where did the body go!? It was just here!!!" In another instance, a man declares that he and another person go look for a missing woman. Two seconds later, he and the person begin discussing escaping the farm. A detective that falls prey to the James brothers at the outset of the film earns the award of being the worst actor of all time, managing to not show emotion as he is ambushed and taken hostage by the group of thugs.

The final conclusion? This movie is the best of the trilogy, which makes it only the third worst movie of all time. If you've watched the first two and are interested in this, you obviously either have a flair for the morbid (in this sense, for morbidly bad movies, not for horror) or actually enjoyed them. In either case, this turd installment will definitely sate your palate. If you haven't dabbled in the steaming pile of feces that is the "Dark Harvest" series, don't start. Turn, walk away, and never look back.

Dark Harvest (Paul Moore, 2004)

Ho hum. Another group of young-and-beautifuls, another secluded house, another evil supernatural entity. Well, at least the young-and-beautifuls are young and, well, beautiful. Still, there's not a shred of originality to be found here. More likely to inspire yawns than screams, except in those places where the Y-and-Bs go swimming (sans bathing suits, naturally). At least that stirs some, erm, emotion. * ½

1 out of 5 stars aka Pure Crapfest.......2006-11-26

It will scare the crop out of you...

...And unless you ate this particular DVD, putting whatever comes out into your player will be more entertaining than this film.

To give credit where credit is due, the plot of this movie isn't too shabby. In the Great Depression, a hard-pressed farmer named Elijah Baker made a pact with the Devil: he would sacrifice the migrant farmhands that drifted from ranch to ranch in exchange for a bountiful harvest, stringing their corpses up on crosses and dressing them up as scarecrows. As depicted by a series of D-grade TV actors in the opening sequence, local law enforcement in "West Virgina" confront Baker when they suspect something, and in the ensuing shootout the farmer is eliminated.

Now, in the present day, Sean (Don Digiulio), a direct descendant of Baker, inherits the farm when his biological father--who has never met--dies. He doesn't want to even bother taking a look at the property, but his fiancé convinces him to make it a trip along with several friends. The young kids head out to the isolated farm and prepare to spend a week. Little do they know that on the coming "blood moon", the farmhands killed by Baker will take revenge on any of Baker's blood-relatives.

If this movie had a decent budget, a decent production crew, and a decent cast, this plot could have given way to a C-horror movie. Instead, what we are left with is hollow, poorly directed, terribly acted piece of trash so vile that it's offensive.

The acting is hands-down terrible. While the supporting cast is OK (how can you mess up saying typical "teen" one-liners?), the brunt of the script necessarily falls upon the shoulders of Don, whose only positive attribute is an ability to put emotion into saying the F word. Unfortunately, his borderline-mentally challenged mannerisms while swearing tend to ruin their effect. But, the best part of all...Don gets a haircut in the middle of the film. No joke. One minute, he's running from the scarecrows, bangs swinging in his face; the next, he's running from the same scarecrow sporting a more aerodynamic hairdo. Ah, but maybe the shooting last a year or so, and Don was left with no choice but to trim his hair? Maybe, except that it was filmed within three weeks. Never has the film world seen an actor so devoted to his craft.

The piss-poor acting could have been tolerable if, by some strange circumstance, the scarecrow monsters had been believable (i.e., they looked anything like they do on the cover). Instead, they are hopelessly crappy looking morons that stumble around and grunt and roar in rage as if they've seen this film. But wait, their eyes...they flash! Please. These are without a doubt the worst monsters to ever grace the silver screen; being direct-to-video, at least it wasn't a theater one (note: after seeing Dark Harvest 2, these creatures become only the second worst monsters of all time).

So, what will it be? Buy? Rent? Urinate on? I'd recommend the third, but that usually would necessitate either of the first two options, so I'm just going to go with AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

3 out of 5 stars You Reap What You Sow.............2006-03-03

For a low budget movie, I did not find this movie as awful as others have. If you have had the misfortune as I have of seeing Dark Harvest 2, you will Really appreciate this movie!! Dark Harvest 2, which I also reviewed is one of the sorriest movies I've ever seen and has nothing to do with this movie. OK horror flick, especially if you like scarecrow movies. To sum it up, a young man inherits a old farm and brings along some friends with him to see if the farmhouse is in good enough condition to be sold. What they do not know is that years ago, a farmer killed his wife and hung her as a scarecrow. Naturally, we see the scarecrow come to life. Taking place deep in the isolated mountains, Dark Harvest has some good/cool scenes. I myself think the scarecrow is rather cool! I'd recommend renting this movie. I think anyone would say.... I've seen much worse!!

2 out of 5 stars Come on, Give the guy some credit.......2007-04-06

I have to say the DVD cover lured me in. The design is great, although there are no killer scarecrows in the film, pity. I am giving the maker of this film some credit because he managed to capture autumn so well on film. The shots of the corn fields, the autumn trees, the fall wind, and the dreary skies are great. Plus, Halloween is my favorite time of the year, and he captured the mood perfectly. I would tell people who are big fans of this time of the year to at least look at it for the scenery. The 2 girls lost in the field were just terrible actors, and I agree with one reviewer who said the 'screaming into the camera' part was so annoying. Yet any film taking place during fall and Halloween in a cornfield has my attention.

You can read the other reviews of this film. I have nothing to add, but wanted to cast my vote for terrible. Wish I had read them before renting.

1 out of 5 stars Awful...........2006-02-24

As a owner of the first Dark Harvest film which I thought was merely a OK film, I was anxious to see Dark Harvest 2 thinking maybe it would be a better movie than the first. Wrong!!!!!!! This movie was terrible from beginning to end! A cheap attempt to make a horror movie. This movie gives you the effect that an amateur with a hand held cheap video camera walked around filming this movie. The acting was horrible and so was the plot. It made no sense at all and after 15 minutes, I was tempted to stop watching but out of curiousity, I suffered through the whole movie. You get sick of seeing this man searching for 2 girls lost in a corn maze. I'm very glad that I only rented this movie and didn't buy it. It would have been a terrible waste of money!! If you are curious about this movie, please rent it first even though the $4 to rent it is too much!!

1 out of 5 stars DON'T EVER BUY THIS MOVIE This Movie Blows I'M SERIOUS .......2006-02-09

This is the worst movie I've ever seen. It's waste of money. Trust me I have over 100 movies and this its by far the worst. I really wouldn't even give 1 star for it. Movie just doen't make sense.

1 out of 5 stars This movie made me hate corn........2006-01-14

Dear God, when will I ever learn? I love no-budget horror movies but you have to draw the line somewhere. Dark Harvest 2 is somewhere behind that line, hidden by other gems like, well, every movie ever released by The Asylum. As far as a review I can't say much that hasn't already been said. The director's attempts at "establishing" a scene are enough to make Gandhi come back to life and immediately kill himself. Here's a hint to the director -- the sound of a little girl screaming is in the Top 5 of Most Annoying Things Ever so to stick a camera on a 9-year old girl and tell her to scream for 5 minutes is a crime against nature, no matter how many camera angles you use. And how can a psychic look at a footprint in the mud and have a psychic premonition OF A FOOTPRINT IN THE MUD??!?!?! What the hell does that even mean? For the love of God, just stop it. I hope you don't get any ideas about making another movie like "Wheat: Legend of the Cereal Killer." I know that was corny but what do you expect, the ENTIRE movie takes place in a freakin' cornfield.
