5 out of 5 stars what a really good re-make..........2007-04-22

this was actually a really good re-make of the original. i'm pretty sure you will recognize the black guy from the original movie. they stay pretty much to the same script as the original but you'll want to see it anyway just to see what else happens.
if you are a "BABYLON 5" fan like i am you might recognize on of the cast members in the movie. i haven't seen it in quite sometime and i just recently ordered it from amazon. i'm looking forward to seeing it again.
"They are coming to get you, BARBARA!!"... the movie that started all the zombie movies ever to come. if you want to see also another good one, the idea for this movie came from another movie with Vincent Price called "THE LAST MAN ON EARTH".
it also deserves a viewing if you are a ZOMBIE fan like me! for anyone who hasn't seen even the original movie of "NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD" where have you been?? rotting in a coffin or something??
enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars A worthy remake that entertained me from start to finish. A solid popcorn movie........2007-04-21

I loved the original movie and this version isn't half-bad. I don't think it's worth commenting on what actually happens in the movie. If you have seen or read about the original Night of the Living Dead you know, more or less, what happens.

It cleans up the visual and audio problems of the original. There is less wooden acting. Let's not forget that the 1969 version was, afterall, made by amateurs. Also, this version has some nice twists to it and there is some subtle humor. What happens to the snaky "Cooper" at the end of the movie will have you roaring with laughter.

What prevents this from being a "great" film is that it follows the original too closely and there are a few moments where the story doesn't seem to unfold naturally because it's trying to hard to be consistent with the 1969 one. But, like I say, some things happen slightly differently. Perhaps the biggest change from the original is that "Barbara" is no longer a helpless female in need of protection from the men. By the film's end, she reminded me of the heroine Sigorney Weaver from the Alien series. She's a natural zombie killer!

I'm giving it 4 and 1/2 stars only because there's no way it deserves to be on par with the original which gets 5 stars. Still, it's a very entertaining movie and I highly recommend that horror fans get it.

5 out of 5 stars Same Idea, Different "Night" ..........2007-04-09

Romero fans, be prepared for a few radical changes ... hopefully you can view them as reflective of a new era and not as an assault on the 1968 original (that Romero was an executive producer and had a hand in revising the script should help)!!

No longer is Barbara the catatonic, ineffectual "zombie" that she was in the 1968 version: now she has a riffle and a meat tenderizer ... and she knows how to use them BOTH!! Other alterations abound! (I am omitting the juicy stuff so as not to spoil your discovery!!) For instance, as Johnnie (as spelled at IMDB) and Barbara approach the cemetery, it is revealed that the siblings' mother is dead ... not the father. Why is this interesting? As explained in Tony Williams text The Cinema of George A. Romero: Knight of the Living Dead, "[the original deals with] domination and possession on many levels. An unseen mother manipulates Johnny and Barbara into performing a ritual neither of them shows any real feeling for" (22). A curious alteration since it is the focus of much speculation! What does this reveal about the current roles of mothers and fathers?

As a zombie fan, you probably enjoy all the minutia as much as I ... especially when it involves social commentary. Therefore, you will enjoy the commentary on modern "craftsmanship" in this version. When Ben realizes that the old farmhouse is being remodeled, he despairs. Tommy is perplexed until Ben easily puts his fist through the new door ... so poorly made. Only by retrieving the old "ugly" doors can the enclave proper steel themselves against the "zed word." Very clever!! It's a small but fun detail:D And, seriously, hearing the line "Yeah, they're dead, they're all messed up" once again ... well, that's just priceless!!

While all the acting is excellent, Tony Todd is a shining star ... not too many actors could succeed in bringing the original role "new life," but Todd does so with zest. He has easily earned his status as a horror-film icon!! (The "Final Destination," trilogy, the "Candyman" trilogy, "Wishmaster," "X-Files," etc... EPIC ACTOR!!)

A note on a minor coincidence that only a horror-enthusiast can appreciate: at 11:44 minutes watch for Tony Todd (Ben) to emerge from the car with a crow-bar. An extreme close-up of the crow-bar in his hand looks like a giant hook ... a la Tony Todd's role in "Candyman." Yes, I know Rose's "Candyman" was released in 1992 and this was released in 1990 ... like I said, it's just a neat coincidence;)

Watch this film if you love zombies, want to be a zombie, have a friend who is a zombie, or are interested in zombie-rights.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable - Just don't take too seriously.......2007-04-04

I suppose it's all been said, but I'll give it a shot. :)

First, the (decidedly amateur) comments:

Having seen all the Romero flicks and enjoyed the Dawn of the Dead remake, I would have to place this movie somewhere beneath these previous flicks. The makeup effects I can't fault; much better than the original. But, of course, effects do not a great movie make. The acting was all right for the most part, but a bit stilted at times; I think the leading lady was trying too hard to be rough and tough. I much prefer the efforts of someone like Sigourney Weaver, who managed to maintain her character's humanity realistically through the "crisis moments."

Okay, enough bellyaching. All in all, I'm still glad I bought this movie; I freely admit to being a zombie fan, so I guess you should take that into account. I see it as a fond "tip of the hat" to the master. It follows, for the most part, the tried and true formula of the original script; a true remake, I think, rather than a "reimagining," which puts it in a different class than the new "Dawn." I guess this is mostly what I'd expect Romero to try out if he had it in mind to "do it over again." I just think he'd do it better, that's all.

If you like the "Dead" films, do try it out. At the very least, it will inspire you to revisit the classic and see it in a new way. Just try not to over-analyze it; not much social commentary here beyond the most basic.

Thanks for reading my ramblings. ;)

Curious kids open a barrel of green gas linked to a mysterious military experiment, and soon a tenebrous green cloud of fog is making its way through the creepy town cemetery. Knowing exactly where this is headed is, of course, part of the fun in this tongue-in-cheek zombie sequel. Maybe it's not as fresh as its successful predecessor, but all of the key zombie ingredients are still well preserved in this second installment: ravenous "undead" in search of human brains, severed limbs with a life of their own, and lots and lots of shrieking! Taking a hackneyed premise that is a close retelling of part I, director Ken Wiederhorn (Freddy's Nightmares, Shock Waves) rejuvenates the genre with sporadic genuine scares, lots of plain old silliness, and some literally eye-popping special effects. Followed up a few years later with the equally enjoyable Return of the Living Dead Part III, this is a fun franchise that reminds you of what '80s horror was all about: bad synth music, and perms. --Matt Wold

5 out of 5 stars A great, silly zombie journey..........2007-05-25

I actually like "Return of the Living Dead: Part II" better than the first. Though that could be considered blasphemous, this movie appealed more to me in my youth over the first, which I have finally come to accept as an outstanding zombie movie...

This edition features two of the same actors from the first in very similar buddy roles. The cast is pretty good, and the young boy lead is a strong performer for his age.

The movie is filled with zombie style laughs, including a cemetary rising scene that is super cool, but filled with cheesy laughs...

A must see in my opinion...

5 out of 5 stars Kick & Awesome.......2007-05-12

The dvd came quickly...and came in better condition than i thought it would...would definitly do business again!!

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2007-01-19

I'm a big fan of zombie movies, and the first return of the living dead was a very good zombie movie. This one, however, fails to scare nor hold your attention, and tries harder in my opinion to be funny instead of scary. The black humor is pathetic, espechialy compared to the first one. Had its interesting moments, but the movie as a whole was definitly below average.

1 out of 5 stars I Want Your Brain!.......2006-10-13

This is not a George A. Romero project.
Directed and written by Ken Wiederman. Film contains profane language, gross bloody effects.
Thom Matthews returns as a different character, "Joey", James Karen returns as a different character, "Ed", Jonathan Terry returns as "Glover", Allan Trautman returns as "Tarman". Brian Peck returns as 5 different zombies, "Pussface", "Thriller", "Jaw", "Eye-Pop" and the zombie on the car roof.
A truck that is traveling across a bridge is carrying pressurized cases that contain cadavers. One case falls off the truck and ends up in the water. A group of kids find the case and triggers the gas inside that spreads across the cemetary. The living dead return.
Also in the cast: Thor van Lingen, Dana Ashbrook, Mitch Pileggi.
DVD only contains audio commentary and theatrical trailer.

3 out of 5 stars A good follow follow-up to the original ROTLD, but doesn't bring anything new.......2006-08-16

1988 saw the release of Return of the Living Dead Part II. This film is a sort of sequel/reboot of the first film in that the story and even some of the characters bare too much of a similarity to the original film. Ken Weiderhorn both writes and directs this "sequel" and it shows. The film reuses alot of what made the first film a cult-classic amongst horror fans. Weiderhorn seems to be of the philosophy that if something ain't broke them don't fix it. What this does is make the film feel like a deja vu, and maybe that was his intent since two of the main characters in the film say pretty much the same thing. Despite all this the film itself is pretty good and stays true to the original, albeit with abit more humor and better effects work.

Reprising similar roles they had in the first film are James Karen as Ed and Thom Mathews as Joey. Both work as in the post-burial industry and moonlight stealing valuables from the privates crypts and mausoleum in the cemetary they're working in. Their characters act and almost have similar lines from Karen and Mathews' characters of Frank and Freddy in the first film. Karen as Ed goes over-the-top once the 2-4-5 Trioxin gas is let loose and the dead bodies in the cemetary begin to come back to life seeking live brains. It's these two characters who really keep the film from spiralling down to awful status. Even though their characters are similar to the original film, Karen and Mathews still bring a dose of great comedic timing and horror to the situation.

This time around the town has been safely evacuated by the military except for a few people who lived on the newly-built suburban housing area in the outskirts. It's these survivors who must try and find a way to defeat the zombies and at the same time convince the military blockading the town that they're not infected. There's more action and comedy in this sequel. I think the comedy part of the film got way too much attention, but as I said earlier, Weiderhorn seems to think that if it worked in the original then it should work with more in this film. The effects work looks abit better and probably due to an increase in the budget.

In the end, Return of the Living Dead Part II never bring anything new to the original its following-up and pretty much reuses the same characters and situations. Weiderhorn does this to good effect and the finished product is an entertaining enough horror-comedy. Who knows how this sequel would've turned out if Russo had written it and O'Bannon back directing.

3 out of 5 stars These people wouldn't know a bad movie..........2007-06-19

I don't know if we're even talking about the same movie here -- this is definitely NOT the worst zombie movie ever made. A big problem on Amazon reviews is that reviewers just say a product is "good" or "bad," but give no actual description. So instead of doing that, I'll just describe a few things about it, then let you decide if it sounds good or not.

Is it boring? In order for something to be boring, I would say it needs to have pretty much nothing happen for a very, very long period of time. Thats not so in this film; there are several scenes of zombie attacks, a plethora of zombie shootings, and quite a few zombie bitings (all the makings of a good zombie movie). Also, there is some pointless (and culturally offensive) nudity. As far as the acting -- not great, but at least they show emotion (even if it is too much), which is better than a lot of the lifeless acting in most Euro-sleaze.

Is it a blatant rip-off of "Dawn of the Dead?" Yes and no; the costumes are clearly designed to look like the SWAT team blue uniforms in Dawn, and they even "borrowed" some of the Goblin soundtrack from Dawn (hey, at least they "borrowed good music). Other than that, its very different -- the group is constantly moving, not trapped in a single space, the cause of the zombies is explicitly stated to be intentional and man-made, and it is not a "zombie holocaust" like Dawn -- for almost the entirety of the movie, the zombies are confined to New Guinea, and several cut-away scenes reveal that the rest of the world is still operating normally (although panicy).

Is the story oscar-worthy? No, but then again, if you're considering buying a movie called "Hell of the Living Dead," you probably know what kind of story to expect. The plot is very simple -- nuclear plant-look-alikes are being used to create some sort of super secret project, which has accidentally (or was it?) been released into the Native population of New Guinea. A crack para-military unit is sent to the site of original infection for reasons explained in the film.

Are the special effects bad? For a 1980 Italian movie, no. In fact, there are several quite good head-shots. Of course, there are several scenes where the actors are clearly holding raw meat on the victim and chewing on that, and many of the zombies are simply painted blue -- then again, so are practically all the zombies in Dawn.

The worst part of the movie is the director's annoying habit of splicing in stock footage of wildlife, footage which is clearly of lower quality and not blended into the film well at all.

So, is this a terrible movie? No, certainly not. In my mind, terrible movies are movies that are technically inept or that have incomprehensible plots, like "Oasis of the Zombies" and "Children of the Living Dead." Other than that, its just a matter of opinion. If you like sleazy Italian horror, especially Italian zombie movies, you should find this entertaining. If you're looking for a well-crafted Romero-esque film with biting and deep social commentary, this isn't your film.

3 out of 5 stars your all doomed to be eaten up!.......2006-11-20

perhaps one of cheesiest and most bizzare zombie films ever made, hell of the living dead is a very enjoyable undead gorefest. the story involves a team of swat commandos encountering zombies in the jungle of some foreign country. obviously inspired by dawn of the dead, hell of the living dead is a perfect example of the 70's and 80's cannibal and zombie craze. if it wasnt for the bloody gore effects and comical cheesiness of the film, it would be nearly unwatchable. the horrible overacting, riddiculouse dialouge and mind numbing use of stock footage are what keep this film from reaching 4 stars. overall hell of the living dead is an enjoyable, blood soaked zombie atrocity. only for hardcore zombie and euro sleaze fans, everyone else may want to avoid this one.

3 out of 5 stars Love the movie, but...........2006-07-26

The big problem I have with this movie isn't the storyline. I love the storyline, it is a very Faustian, very grim, storyline about the desire to end world overpopulation by...well...as the chemicals show...creating zombies across the 1st and 2nd world countries. And things work out pretty darn well...no more overpopulation, everyone's a zombie, and everyone has a meal... the living... a great story, and while the actors and special effects aren't anything to write home about, I think the movie does a great job bringing the story from beginning to end. The big problem I have with the movie is the transfer of the movie onto DVD. Now, yes this is a fairly old movie, and it seems that the DVD company that's selling it isn't around (at least I couldn't find it on the net). Still, one would hope for this price we would see the transfer far clearer than when the movie was viewed on vhs. I really wish the film was cleaned up enough so that I can see what's going on. Still, if you like zombie movies, this is a great one, I give the movie itself thumbs up...you'll just be straining your eyes to see what's going on!

3 out of 5 stars Three stars for the zombies and gore, and cheese........2006-07-06

This delivers on the zombies and gore despite the craptastic story. Still fun.

When the guy lifts the rat, and it crawls into his cheap mask, the blood begins to spurt and you know you've entered the 'cheese zone', thanks to some horrendously acting (funny in a bad way) and strange story of project HOPE, which is really a sick plan of genocide that goes 'zombie' wrong.

Hell of the Living Dead is a classic cheeseball zombie film, with plenty of zombies (over 100), zombie gore (cheap fx but bloody), worms (real maggots), atmosphere (jungle, town, abandoned mansion, factory all of which contain zombies). Worth at least one watch, this is one for the zombie classic record books; on the bottom of the pile of course.

2 out of 5 stars i love this cheesey gore flick, but it is stupid!!.......2006-06-06

i love this movie ,so it pains me to give it two stars but really other than the gore and bad acting, this is one of the worst!!! only for gore fans(like me),other wise stay away!!!

Description

"WOE BE UNTO HIM WHO OPENS ONE OF THE SEVEN GATEWAYS TO HELL, BECAUSE THROUGH THAT GATEWAY, EVIL WILL INVADE THE WORLD."

The Seven Gates Of Hell have been torn open, and in three days the dead shall rise and walk the earth. As a reporter ( Christopher George of PIECES) and a psychic ( Catriona MacColl of THE BEYOND) race to close the portals of the damned, they encounter a seething nightmare of unspeakable evil. The city is alive - with the horrors of the living dead!

Directed and co-written by the legendary Lucio Fulci (ZOMBIE, THE BEYOND), CITY OF THE LIVIND DEAD features some of the maestro's most shocking and controversial sequences of all time. This is the definitive version of Fulci's hallucinogenic masterpiece of horror: uncut, uncensored and presented in all its brain-ripping, gut-spewing, head-drilling glory!

4 out of 5 stars ACK! RATS ARE EATING MY FACE!..........2007-06-06

CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD stars Christopher George (Pieces, Grizzly, Day Of The Animals, Graduation Day) and Catriona MacColl (The Beyond) as a reporter and a psychic on their way to the town of Dunwich. They must get there in order to stop the evil that is manifesting itself. You see, animated corpses are walking around and squeezing people's brains out! The townfolk are also being killed off by a demonic priest from beyond the grave, who can make blood run from his victim's eyes just by looking at them! He can also cause his prey to vomit up their own entrails! Can his reign of terror be thwarted? Lucio Fulci continues his wonderfully wicked zombie-cycle without remorse! COTLD fits in perfectly w/ ZOMBIE, THE BEYOND, and HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY. Watch out for the head-drilling, cranium-crushing, and intestine-ejection scenes! Yeech! The building dread is heavy and nasty. Another Fulci classic...

5 out of 5 stars If you like gore............2007-04-30

Fulci was brilliant. If you like real gore movies you will love this. if you don't, go watch scream or some other pg-13 teen "horror" flick.

The scene where the chick vomits up her intestines is awesome!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Warning: Avoid at all costs........2007-04-11

This movie is horrible. There is not a saving grace about it. Lucio Fulci is the worst of the Italian sub-genre directors and that is not saying much seeing as how the vast majority of Italian horror filmmakers seem to know only one language, violence... extreme violence.

The film opens up with a priest hanging himself in a town that I presume is in New England, and I live in New England, and trust me we do not all act the idiots in this film. Apparently the Italian image of New England is a bunch of inbred hicks. Not back to the topic at hand. Apparently a hanged New England priest lets loose the last gate of Hell, how he does this is beyond me, but I am assured by the fifteen times that they say it.

A couple, which consist a reporter and a police officer, go up to investigate the occurance after a young women is buried alive (dead, but the undead... get it?) and talks about the strange inbred New England town. What happens next is all a blur to me. Something about zombies followed by insipid dialouge and then some more talk about zombies, followed by even more stupid dialouge, then a guy gets a drill in the head. Curtains.

While I am in the midst of trashing this movie I might as well bring up the zombies. These aren't your ordinary zombies, oh no, these are zombies that have the capabilites to transport from one place to another in a split second, whether or not this is intentional is beyond me. Another odd thing is, for some reason, they aren't interested in eating their victims. Rather, they enjoy pulling the backs of their heads off... you read that right, pulling the backs of their heads off. It is as weird as it sounds.

I don't remember how it ends (and I watched it only a half hour ago) and nor do I care. You will not care either. Not even a graduated gorehound like myself can enjoy this garbage. Do NOT watch this film. Ever. Sticking your money in your fireplace is better use of it then giving Lucio Fulci's estate anymore money.

4 out of 5 stars The dark mood of this film is unsurpassed.......2007-04-08

This film sets a creepy mood. The director, Lucio Fulci, also achieved this mood in "The Beyond". When I was a kid this film was forbidden to be seen. In America it was called "The Gates Of Hell". I was raised around hard core bible thumpers and they all declared this film to be banned. So ofcourse I had to get my hands on it. The film didn't need the gore. It could have been great on the mood alone. It stands as my fave zombie film. Some people just won't get it. P.S. I love the urban monkey screams in the film lol.

5 out of 5 stars Fulci Lives.......2007-03-21

Quick saying....this is opne of the best fulci movies ever, the gore is great and horror stay's grounded. Buy this dvd! now!

3 out of 5 stars Not As Bad As I Thought It Would Be.......2007-03-27

I expected a movie of abominable quality when sitting down to watch it, but was a bit surprised at some of it's good points. I won't go into too many specifics here, but some thought was put into character interaction in this film and plot resolution. Some of the acting wasn't that good and there were some holes in the story, but this certainly wasn't as bad as a ROTLD sequel could have been -- it makes for a good Sci-Fi channel movie.

5 out of 5 stars Loved It.......2007-01-29

It was hard for me to find this film, so when I ordered it on Amazon I wasn't disappointed. The product came exactly as described, the film was excellent for being a third chapter in the series. I recommend this film to every horror fan out there.

2 out of 5 stars part 1 and 2 way better !!.......2007-01-17

1st, acting is not that good and affex arent that good either.Buy part
one and two but dont bother bying part 3.

4 out of 5 stars Among the Best of the Best!!.......2007-01-17

Return of the Liveing Dead 3 I must say is among the best of zombie movies. It takes a total different direction then the first 2 Return movies but pretty much same story line. It not az ombie movie with comedy. It actually take a serious approach to it. The just of the movie is, at this point the military is useing the zombies to make some sort of super soldier for warfare. There trying to make it were the can some how control the zombies as much as they can. The director of the products son steals his keycard to get into the military base. The son and his hot girlfriend goes onto the base and catches a glimpse of the experiment. They leave though before they can see the experiment go terribly wrong. Okay then the son and his girlfriend get in a wreck were this red headed beauty is killed by a broken neck when she is thrown from the bike into a pole. The son brings her back to the miltary base were he brings her back to life. This starts the whole mess, and probably the birth of the best zombie I have ever seen. She is hott, dead and she pierce's her self and cuts her self to take the pain of the hunger away. Anyway my skills of telling ya the just of this movie sucks. All I can say is I came out knowing I watched a good horror flick, and I was sporting a giant rod. I give this move two rods up for its good direction that kept me watching and the hott dead chick. Go head give a try you won't be dissapointed.

3 out of 5 stars The army shouldn't play with dead things...but plucky teens should!.......2007-01-02

If gore and comedy are your preferred combo, this seemed a passable treat. I caught it on cable, so I'm sure I missed plenty of the former. The first attack in the army base was actually pretty nasty and tense, well-filmed with the contrast between the stark white and the hideous blue/grey of the zombie. But once they're running around and the kid tries to keep his undead girlfriend under control, it was pretty laugh out loud funny.

    1 out of 5 stars Deserves MST3K treatment!.......2007-05-22

Let me start out by saying that I am a huge fan of ROTLD and ROTLD 3 (Mindy Clark is AWESOME!!!!) So I had somewhat high expectations of this movie. Now I realize that I was not going to be blown over with awesome production values or ILM special effects, I did however expect for a plausible storyline. I'm afraid to inform you that the writers of this movie didn't comply. Ridiculous! Avoid this movie like the plague!

1 out of 5 stars Bad Bad Bad.......2007-03-27

I'm not sure if the crew intentionally wanted to produce a bad horror flick, but whether or not they did, this movie was just awful. Poor acting, bad story, you get the point. Of course I know you shouldn't expect too much more from a ROTLD sequel, so I'll just leave it at that.

    1 out of 5 stars Disgrace.......2007-03-15

The Return of the Living Dead series is one of the staple series of the zombie genre. You have Romero's films, and you have the Return films. Unlike Romero's films, the Return films have now gone down the path of utter disgrace.

Everything in Necropolis destroys everything that parts 1-3 of the series grounded. The zombies can be killed with a shot to the head now, yet a severed limb can exist without a brain? Some zombies have no control over any bodily function, yet another zombie can talk, recall memories, and have the urge to fight a victim for pure spite and never act upon taking a bite out of him? And what the heck was with the "oh, let's think we're funny and spoof the first one" with the whole "Send more security" bit?

If anything could have saved that mess, it should have been the characters. No, not at all. There may have been one character I cared about, but in the end, she didn't even matter. And the one character they tried to play as sweet and innocent and then turn her into a "foul-mouthed tough chick", that was a big joke. And one thing about the plot - in a way - is how can a guy see his thought-to-be-dead parents as now biological weapons be blowns to pieces and his little brother with his head ripped open and act like he doesn't give two cents about it, yet when the girl he supposedly likes is gunned down, he acts like it's the end of the world?

No ma'ams and sirs. Everything about Necropolis is a disgrace, and it should be disregarded from the series. Nothing here has to deal with the original 1-3 except for the name and some useless little nods to those previous installments.

This film truly angered me. Bad film.

2 out of 5 stars Not as bad as it could have been.......2007-02-11

The movie has an adequate storyline and the screenwriter does a good job of setting up the characters so you actually care (or root) for them when they die. Most of the acting is beyond horrible though, along with the dialogue. The movie is more in the vein of the "Resident Evil" franchise, rather than "Return of the Living Dead". The zombies are no longer extremely agile or fast-moving, but slow and dim-witted.

The characters often make dumb moves like upon learning that the zombies ONLY die when shot in the head they STILL waste countless bullets on shooting them in the torso or chest. Morons!

The movie has the annoying obligatory "annoying brat brother" in the cast but I was surprised and happy with what happened with that character.

1 out of 5 stars Really bad adolscent attempt.......2007-01-17

This movie was really bad. It was a mixture of Scooby Do with Thelma and Nancy Drew. It was a very adolscent attempt at making a horror flick. The story was bad along with the acting and make-up of the zombies. I am one that likes B horror flicks and I give this an absolute Z. This movie was filmed like a bunch of high school students got together and made this flick. Stay away from this movie!!!!!!!!!!

"The Gates of Hell."

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 Classic Gore, Stupefying Story and Acting.......2007-05-28

So much of this movie is literally amazing in its slipshod attempt at structure. And I mean that in the "bad" way. Whole elements of the plot are seemingly Frankenstein-ed together, the acting is the worse of Fulci's films (which is saying alot, see "The Beyond"), and there's not a single chatacter worth caring about, let alone "liking" or sympathizing with.

However, the classic gore effects are worth it by far. Anyone "into" gore effects which offended the hell out of late-seventies/early eighties moms NEEDS this film. Anyone expecting something along the lines of Romero (or even Fulci's "Zombie" or "Beyond") will be disappointed. You were warned.

However, this is mandatory for gore completists as a RULE.

4 out of 5 stars The gates of hell........2007-03-31

This is a brilliant film from Lucio Fulci that has a ton of gore and violence, if your looking for a proper storyline with some good acting and some nicely shot sequences then forget it. The makeup on the zombies was slightly dissapointing and it looks like a bunch of dirt and slime was rubbed on their faces which looks disgusting and the editing was bad otherwise this film was very cool and had some of the best gore scenes I have seen so far. If you like cheesy Italian gore flicks then your going to love this, the atmosphere was very dark and worked very well with the rest of the film along with the music which was very creepy I also felt like the characters were going to be doomed and it didn't seem like they could escape since the zombies could appear at any time out of thin air which was great and unintentionally hilarious, only Lucio Fulci could make a film like this. The film was about a young female psychic (Catriona Macol) who goes into a trance in New York on the day a priest commits suicide by hanging himself in the town of Dunwich, she has a vision of his death thus reviving an ancient story of the satanic powers of evil which involves the dead coming back to life. As the story continues the plot gets thinner but thats not important since the death scenes were terrific like the scene where the kid gets his head drilled into and the girl who vomits out her guts and bleeds from her eyes, make sure that you don't eat while watching this and that you have a strong stomach. Even though it wasn't as good as Zombie 2 or The beyond its still considered a cult classic gore flick from Italy and was great, if your a true horror fan then you should obviously add this to your collection. I highly recommend this enjoyable film and two thumbs up!.

    4 out of 5 stars Lucio Fulci.......2007-03-09

for all you Lucio Fulci haters this guy was a director way back in the 1950's. So don't compare Lucio Fulci to the director George Romero. Lucio was most popular for his horror grindhouse movies like The Beyond, House By the Cementary, A Cat in the Brain, A Lizard in a Women's Skin, House of Clocks, the New York Ripper, Don't Torture a Duckling, The Psychic, City of the Living Dead, and Zombie, etc. What people don't know is that he directed well over 50 movies. He directed comedy, Italian westerns, dramas, trillers, giallos, and of course horror movies. So don't even compare Lucio Fulci to George Romero because George is nothing compared to Lucio. George always directs some type of zombie horror movie and hardly anything else. Also, Italian movies back in the day don't rely on plot when directing a movie. Asian movies are like that too. Americans need to go educate themselves before dissing foreign films as this or that. Please know something before you criticize something. It will make the world a much better place.

3 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the gore, 3 for the plot and 1.5 for the zombies!.......2007-01-17

This is more of a comment than a review, something I never do but I honestly don't feel like typing too much as this film can defined in a very simple manner. Gore, there's tons of it, great work by the godfather of gore Lucio Fulci. The atmosphere was perfect for the film's setting, but it fails by a canyon of an ammount when compared to The Beyond & Zombie. The problem was there weren't enough zombies in this movie to satisfy me as a huge zombie fan. When I watched it I expected alot more from Fulci, but I guess you can't get it right all the time. It's overated as far as so many people wearing t-shirts of the film, when Zombie & The Beyond are much better, but it's a classic when it comes to gore & scenery. If you're a big fan of gore this is a must watch. if you're a zombie fan, you can either pass it, or watch it and be mildly entertained.

4 out of 5 stars Not a classic... but not to be forgotten.......2006-12-25

I have read numerous horrible reviews for this film. I agree with a lot of the points people make (not an amazing and/or original plot, Fulci uses gore to fill plot gaps, ending sucks, etc.) This film however... does have some... what I regard as classic horror scenes... the "evil eye" scene is amazing along with the drill press... both classic scenes in horror movie make up.

On the whole.. it is not his best... but certainly not his worst film... definitely worth viewing more than once!

4 out of 5 stars In the Spirit of Peter Jackson.......2007-01-20

When I saw Peter Jackson's Dead Alive, I considered it the goriest movie I'd ever seen--and that was saying a lot. Now that Jackson's gone mainstream, Olaf Ittenbach has stepped up to the plate with this gore extravaganza.

Similar to Dead Alive, but with a different twist. This one involves a fallen angel, who rebelled against God even before Lucifer did. Throughout history, he has intervened in human events. Now, he visits a small German town and wreaks horror on its inhabitants. The body count is close to that of Dead Alive, but don't expect it to end the same way.

3 out of 5 stars Oh boy this is fun........2006-04-18

I can not believe I like this junk, it's shoddy stuff from start to end, but I love it.
From the son who is 40 but acts like he's 10 to the ol mans buddy who throws up on every one.
I don't want to give away to much since I want you to set threw it like I did, so find the cheapest used copy you can dig up and check it out.

    4 out of 5 stars A lot better than I expected!!!.......2006-03-02

I went in watching this expecting something as horrendous as Zombie Doom but i was pleasantly surprised. The beginning was incredible and I thought to myself "Man, if the rest of this movie is as good as the beginning this will be one of the greatest horror movies ever! But the rest of the movie wasn't so good. It didn't even come close to following the three act structure so you begin to space out and get bored. Although some parts were hilarious like when they changed the dialogue of the two guys in the bar near the end to make it seem like they were gay. The dubbing is horrendous but for a movie like this it only works in its favor. The climactic anding wasn't so climactic. It went on for far to long. If the used some variation in the kills then it might have been better. Also there is no way that this movie is gorier than Dead Alive. I have no idea what those other people are talking about. If you're a zombie fan then you should definitly buy this.

    3 out of 5 stars Zombies and a tank.......2005-09-30

Imagine a zombie movie with a tank at the end. A tank doing bad things. This is premutos. You have to love it!

Bad script, bad acting, lousy dubbing (dubbed by one person, by the sound of it, but strangely funny for this reason), but a compelling gore-fest, with more outrageous violence than you can poke a stick at, including some sickening testicle squashing action for our hero and a soccer ball.

Premutos. You won't regret it if you love gore. And if you don't love gore, why are you looking at a movie called Premutos?

3 out of 5 stars If you are a fan of Zombie movies, see this.......2005-08-12

This movie has a lot of bad qualities, but it has a lot of good also. It has horrible dubbing, a horrible story line and horrible acting. HOWEVER, if you are a fan of zombie movies, then you have to see this one. It has all the blood and gore for three movies. More exploding heads, amputations and decapitations than i have ever seen. I do believe that this is the goriest movie i have ever seen. It beats DEAD ALIVE by a stretch. rent it. You won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Queen Of The Darned..........2005-10-18

Chris (Andrew Prine) arrives on a bleak, strange little island in order to bury his dead father. Dad died from extremely un-natural causes. A 3-ton stone coffin was dropped on him! Chris must enlist the help of the local fishermen to move the huge thing. His friend Peter (Mark Damon) seems helpful, but is actually the one who killed Chris' father! He's a deciple of the crypt's occupant, a 700 year old vampire named Hannah (queen of the vampires). Meanwhile, Chris has fallen in love w/ Mary (Patty "Stop calling me Barbara Steele" Sheppard), Peter's sister. Oh no! Hannah has awakened from her slumber, and she's awful thirsty! She turns into a wolf and kills a dog to slake her thirst. Hannah spends 99% of the film on her back in the coffin. She never speaks a word of dialogue either! Beautiful but dull, Hannah does finally sink her canines into Peter's throat. The end battle is fairly interesting, consisting of listening to Hannah do a demonic yodeling demonstration after being set on fire. The evil queen then falls off a cliff, winding up surrounded by fishermen. Her final incarnation is hideous and comical at the same time! The "shock" ending is a pretty low-voltage affair. There's also a one-eyed "wild man" (Ihsan Genik) who causes extra mayhem. Watch this with FANGS OF THE LIVING DEAD for added bloodsucking cheese...

3 out of 5 stars I Thought The Phrase 'Living Dead' Applied To Zombies.......2003-09-17

Unless you happen to be under the age of ten, this movie is not creepy, scary or any other adjective to describe a movie that is classified as horror. As a movie under the classic genre--by classic I mean the ones that came out before Hollywood decided that horror movies needed blood, guts and gore for a horror movie to be successful. You know the kind that came out in the 1920's to 1930's, were black and white, possibly silent, that kind of thing.
'Crypt Of The Living Dead' was released at the end of this ungorified era. Expecting a movie that was black and white, according to the online synopsis, I was somewhat surprised to find that I was watching a colour movie. The surprise was short lived when I figured out that the "old vampire movie" I was watching came out in the early 1970's.

Anyway, this explorer/scientist is looking around on the island when he happens upon the tomb of Hannah, the bride of King Louis the VII, a king during the time of the Crusades. According to local legend, Louis VII fell in love with Hannah. Not realising that his beloved fiance was a vampire, he (Louis) arranged for a ship to carry her and several of his knights to the Holy Land for the wedding.
The explorer is reading this information on a plaque when a 'priest' comes up behind him and strangles him. He then gestures to a wild-looking man and together they shove the dead guy under the tomb, up to his chin. The priest and the wild man then destroy the legs that are holding up the tomb, which happens to be solid marble. This all happens in the span of the first 10-15 minutes of the movie.

Ok, fast forward probably about a month. The dead guy's son comes to the island to say good bye to his father. He meets this guy Peter and his sister Mary.
A romance between Mary and the son of the dead guy, his name happens to be Chris, soon develops. No surprises there. Any way Chris decides to unseal the tomb so he can move it to retrieve his father's body. Remember, the tomb is solid marble. Hannah comes back to life, kills a couple of people and a blind guy's dog. She kills the dog while in the form of a wolf so she can regain her strength, we find out that Peter was the 'Priest' who killed Chris's father, Chris winds up staking Hannah, after she is reduced to a skeleton by a torch, Peter winds up being staked by one of the islanders, and Hannah winds up not being dead after all, she had put a little girl into a trance earlier in the movie and she apparently turned vampire, only she wasn't a young vampire, she was the 700 year old Hannah in the form of a little girl.

3 out of 5 stars Not Great, But Not Bad Either..........2002-01-10

I must confess that I enjoyed many of these films as guilty pleasures in the 60's, 70's and 80's when going to the movies was a much different experiance than it is today. I saw this as HANNAH, QUEEN OF THE VAMPIRES on a double bill with SIMON, KING OF THE WITCHES, both starring Andrew Prine and I believe both filmed back to back and in some of the same locations. Neither film is a classic, but neither film is all bad either. There is a nice use of location photography here and some fairly good suspense. The story is good, if the performances leave something to be desired. For fans of 70's schlock who have only been able to see this film in badly worn prints on video, the DVD will be a revelation. A good pick for Halloween party viewing or for curling up on a dark stormy night.

2 out of 5 stars Hannah - Woman of Few Words.......2001-07-30

Hannah does not move more than her eyelids for the first hour. After an hour, she gets out of her coffin and walks around a bit - at times opening her mouth slightly, but never speaking (not one word in the whole movie).

The last 10 minutes were okay, but that is only relative to everything up to that point.

If this is a movie you saw/liked as a kid, it might be worth a view (thus, 2 stars). Otherwise, best to avoid this as it is boring and doesn't have even any b-movie draw.
