Description
A teacher with a paranormal gift and a dark past, is forced to her limits when she becomes the target of a gang of teenagers. After spying on the vulnerable woman as she showers they break into her home, humiliate and sexually assault her. Something inside this reclusive teacher snaps and the thirst for vengence takes over. Bloody and clad in lingerie, she mutilates her attackers using some rather interesting and gorey methods.

This strange, 1985 experiment by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner) starred the up-and-coming Tom Cruise in a fairy-tale world of dwarfs and unicorns and demons. After the horn of a unicorn is broken, darkness and winter descend upon the world. Cruise's character, helped along by a magic sprite played by David Bennent (The Tin Drum), descends into hell to save paradise. This movie is almost a classic case of art direction gone amok. The somewhat amorphous Cruise doesn't lend much dramatic focus or artistic definition, but the drama between Tim Curry's satanic majesty and Mia Sara's character, who becomes a sort of princess of the netherworld, is pretty captivating. A mixed experience all around that makes one wish it had been more successful. --Tom KeoghCustomer Reviews:

Robin Williams and Annabella Sciorra star in this visually stunning metaphysical tale of life after death. Neurologist Chris and artist Annie had the perfect life until they lost their children in an auto accident; they're just starting to recover when Chris meets an untimely death himself. He's met by a messenger named Albert (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and taken to his own personal afterlife--a freshly drawn world reminiscent of Annie's own artwork, still dripping and wet with paint. Meanwhile a depressed Annie takes her own life, compelling Chris to traverse heaven and hell to save Annie from an eternity of despair. The multitextured visuals seem to have been created from a lost fairy tale. Heaven recalls the landscape paintings of Thomas Cole and Renaissance architecture complete with floating cherubs, while hell is a massive shipwreck, an upside-down cathedral overgrown with thorns and a sea of groaning faces popping out of the ground (one of those faces is German director Werner Herzog). Williams is the perfect actor to play against the imaginative computer-generated imagery--he himself is a human special effect. But the lack of chemistry between Williams and Sciorra is painfully apparent, and the flashback plot structure flattens the story's impact despite its deeply felt examinations of the heart and the spirit. Still, there's no denying Eugenio Zanetti's triumphant production design and the Oscar-winning special effects, which create a fully formed universe that is at once beautiful, eerie, and a unique example of movie magic. --Shannon Gee

Two reliable genres--submarine adventure and the threat of World War III--come together in director (and co-writer) Samuel Fuller's Hell and High Water, a 1954 film that remains surprisingly relevant more than half a century later. When an enormous nuclear explosion is traced to somewhere between the tip of northern Japan and the Arctic Circle, followed by the disappearance of a prominent French atomic scientist (Victor Francen), it's clear that something's up. Did the prof defect to the dark (actually, the Red) side? Was he abducted? As it turns out, he's actually part of a group of scientists, businessmen, and other distinguished gentlemen planning to send a sub to check out the scene and determine the extent of the threat. Enter Capt. Adam Jones (the redoubtable Richard Widmark), who agrees to helm the private, very secret mission for a hefty cash reward; enter also the professor's "assistant" (Bella Darvi), herself a skilled scientist who goes along for the ride, thereby quickening the pulse of every able-bodied sailor on board the sub, especially the captain's.Hell and High Water was filmed in Technicolor and CinemaScope, as studios tried to induce audiences to abandon their TVs in favor of movie theaters; it also earned an Oscar nomination for its special effects, and considering the relatively primitive state of that art at the time, they're not bad. Fuller does a nice job of depicting the cramped, funky confines of our heroes' craft, a vessel of dubious seaworthiness captured from the Japanese during World War II. The plot, involving the Chinese's dastardly plan to incite a nuclear conflagration and blame the U.S., is preposterous; yet if you substitute North Korea or Iran for China, the notion of a rogue nation with atomic capabilities is no less timely now than then. Fuller largely avoids political flag-waving; his main point lies in a speech delivered (more than once) by the French professor: "Each man has his own reason for living and his own price for dying." Extras include an interesting biography of Widmark from the A&E show of that same name. --Sam Graham

Barney and his pals take a trip to Grandpa's farm and find that a magical egg--which is due to hatch any moment--is missing. As opposed to the studio-bound television show, this feature film has a lot more visual diversity and is a bright, good-looking production. Barney fans will appreciate the broader production scale--even if they don't realize it. --Tom KeoghCustomer Reviews:

"It works extremely well or it doesn't work at all," says Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice on this concert DVD, reflecting on DP's 25th anniversary reunion tour. This great-sounding disc (filmed in Birmingham, England, on November 9, 1993) finds the band working extremely well indeed. Legendary lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore left the band after the tour's European leg, so the Birmingham concert has, in retrospect, the sense of capturing lightning in a bottle, providing (in keyboardist Jon Lord's words) "a wonderful combination of improvisation and discipline." Blackmore is conspicuously absent in the interview clips, but the remaining "Mark II" lineup (vocalist Ian Gillan, bassist Roger Glover, Paice, and Lord) speaks eloquently on the band's behalf, never masking their resentment toward Blackmore's sullen decision to quit. It's no wonder, because this is no withering nostalgia act. With Blackmore in top form (eyes down, emotionless, fully involved), the band is tight and mighty, and despite a few faltering moments (particularly in Gillan's otherwise laudable vocals), this DVD never disappoints.Lord's blues-rock wizardry is consistently astounding, and with a set list that spans the band's illustrious history, everyone gets a chance to shine. Gillan can't reach the highest highs like he did in the early '70s, but he never hits a sour note, either. Paice cuts loose with a "Space Truckin'" solo (don't you dare call these guys dinosaurs), and, surprisingly, the show's highlight turns the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black" into a transcendent jam. So what of their post-Blackmore era with replacement axman Steve Morse? This DVD offers ample proof that DP would thrive, come hell or high water. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description
Shot in coffee shops, cafes, studios and streets of New Orleans four months after Hurricaine Katrina. The interviews empathetically conducted by Pam Bell skillfully reveal the frank feelings, hopes, fears and dreams of residents of New Orleans. A different view of the disaster is presented to contrast the sensationalism of news broadcasts. The voices of seven residents filmed four months after Huricaine Katrina, echo the familiar themes of loss and devastation but something beyond the expected is revealed. Serious questions about the sustainability of the entire nation are raised from a historical perspective. A new way of thinking has been spawned from the power of Katrina; the politician's words ring hollow to the people, the bumbling continues to inflict damage. The story of the storm is bigger than any one broadcast or movie, its power still resonates as it does in the words of seven residents of the Big Easy. The stories of these seven people are but a few in an ocean of suffering. We witness the humor, hope, faith and strength sustaining them.Customer Reviews:
