Euro-horror.......2004-03-05
I desperately wanted to try one of these euro-horror films that are so highly regarded by many, so I decided to splurge and buy this set rather than just one or two of them(which cost a lot more individually than in this 3-pack). Trying to find reviews for these films were very difficult so I thought I'd try to help those out that are curious about these films too. All films are english subtitled, supposedly uncut, and in their original theatrical aspect ratios. So here we go:
Living Dead Girl--i've read this is considered Jean Rollin's best film. I can't vouch for that, but it is pretty good. Some girl comes back to life after a chemical accident and needs blood to stay 'alive' which her best friend provides for her. It has decent performances and decent pacing(it was kinda slow, but i didn't get really bored at any point), but it wasn't very scary or erotic(no major sex/love scene, the lesbian relationship is only hinted at). It is rather bloody but not really too gory. (trailer, filmography, mini-gallery)
Reincarnation of Isabel--Poorly made film about some girl being killed because she was accused of being a witch. She comes back later to seek vengeance on those that killed her(i think, it's slightly confusing). Anyway, there is a decent sleaze factor in this one, but again, no major sex scene(more like a few major 'tease' scenes). Also has very little atmosphere, no real scares or blood, gore, etc. In fact, if it weren't for the sleaze factor, this would be kinda hard to sit through(would make for a good MST3K episode though). (no extras worth mentioning)
Night of the Hunted--atmospherically surreal Jean Rollin film. Plot has something to do with some 'patients' in a high rise losing their memory due to some 'illness' and two of the girls trying to escape. I've read reviews complaining it's too confusing and extremely cheap looking. The sets are sparse, but it adds to the surreal nature of the proceedings(besides, who's to say these rooms don't naturally look this way). As for the confusion, it's not really confusing at all mainly because one character in the film explans almost everything at the end of the movie(if it's still confusing...it's because of the holes in the script). The film is not really scary, bloody(ok,one scene), or gory; disturbing, intriguing, and weird are more appropriate. As for the sex, there's an extended love scene, a rape scene, and a brief sex-turns-deadly scene. The extras say there is a trailer(there is), and two "strong, previously unseen sex scenes". These two must've been incorporated into the film, cause i saw no option to view them separately on the menu screen.
Overall, Living Dead Girl is arguably the best made of the 3 and can be considered a horror movie. Reincarnation of Isabel is arguably the poorest made but yet has the highest sleaze factor and falls under the witchcraft genre. But my personal favorite would have to be the sci-fi-ish, surreal nightmare Night of the Hunted(though none of these 3 could actually be considered zombie films, at least, in the Romero-sense anyway). As a package, it costs a lot less to buy than buying them individually. However, I really can't strongly recommend a purchase of any one of these titles. But if you are a fan of these types of films, it's still worth a late night rental for some cheap thrills. To be honest, I'm glad i saw them, but i'm not exactly glad i paid for all three of them(perhaps more extras would have helped...that or better films!). Btw, I'm not completely ignorant of this genre as i've seen Vampyres(check that one out), Daughters of Darkness, The Beast, Immoral Tales, and a few too many Jess Franco films by way of comparison.

Get ready to experience notorious writer/director Jess Franco at his most wild, perverse and extreme! Four wanton waitresses - including Eva Leon of HOUSE OF PSYCHOTIC WOMEN, Mamie Kaplan of LILLIAN, THE PERVERTED VIRGIN and the legendary Lina Romay (billed here as `Candy Coster') of BARBED WIRE DOLLS - arrive for vacation in the Canary Islands where they soon indulge their hungers for masturbation, lesbian lust, bondage and beyond. But the ultimate depravities are still to come, as a nearby 17th Century monastery unleashes a horde of zombie Templars crazed for the taste of hot female flesh!
Robert Foster (MACUMBA SEXUAL) co-stars in this jaw-dropping saga of sex and sadism that Franco scholars have called an insane homage to the BLIND DEAD series. Severin Films is proud to present it now fully restored from original Spanish elements, featuring all-new Bonus Materials and presented totally uncut & uncensored for the first time ever in America!
Customer Reviews:
One sadistic nightmare that stands for what it is........2007-06-02
I'm going to keep this short. I have to give this a 3 star rating for responsibility reasons. This film is sadistic, haunting, low budget, and well...evil in an in your face way. But.. I have to be true, and say... it still makes me wince after seeing it 5 times.I like this film because it' at the least, is honest. It's pretty brutal in a non-Hollywood way. It's so low budget it becomes more real...which let's face it is even worse that way. It's very repulsive and down right sadistic at times. It's dialog is really straight forward and yes cruel. But in the nature of the story..it's supposed to be. I would say that this film achieved what it set out to be. A film about priests convicted and cursed to stay frozen in time, demean, rape and murder people(in this case bi-curious whores), for Satan..to be released from their curse to be redeemed in god's eyes and go into the abyss. It is not for the weak stomach. It is not for the weak hearted. It is not for a weak mind either.I only showed this to one other person, who I knew could handle it. Yes..no don't even for the majority.
Jess Franco....I will give you credit for making this a horrific, nasty, violent...but not actually bloody film. A real sick vision of horror that respects the boundaries of the actual frame you see, and throws it at you in the subject matter instead. Smart and psychologically dangerous for the status quo, so it is effective. It is a nightmare in the true human sense of the word.3@1/2 stars with a warning label..and a paper bag for the innocents who might accidentally come across it.
You were warned. Don't come crying to me later. I've washed my hands of any responsibility.
No don't...not even out of curiosity........2007-04-12
WHY OH WHY! as a fan of the 'proper' Blind Dead films and having the occasional dabble with that nutter Jess Franco i thought 'why not,how bad could this be?...' very in actual fact.
Gone are the skeletal Templers, gone are the spectral horses they ride on,gone is the ethereal doom laden bell and chant sountrack that accompanies them, gone are the sexy dolly birds...gone are...you get the idea.
In comes bored blokes in white dressing gowns with flour on their faces,no horses,no atmospheric music..oh and not very dolly dolly birds.
Its a shambles, sorry but just for completists...and fans of flourey faces.
there nothing much to say about it.......2006-12-29
If you're a afficionado of Jess franco's work , I' m sure this DVD is already on your shelf, along with many others, ...and if you're not , please stay away from this "oeuvre"
Disappointing... No Hotties... Not scary... But Gorgeous DVD transfer from Severin.......2006-11-18
This was disappointing. It is Jess Franco's sexploitation take on George Romero's "Living Dead" films. For me, a sexploitation film needs one thing above all else: Beautiful women! Sadly, the women here are a far cry from the "Hotties" advertised on the back cover. They look more like 4 middle-aged, plumpish looking housewives on vacation (Lina Romay had put on quite a bit of weight at this time). To be fair, this boils down to personal taste - if you like older, Rubenesque women, then these'll appeal to you. Sadly the film doesn't work on the horror front either. The undead Monks of Cathar are not in the least bit scary. Seeing them in their Halloween masks is in fact quite funny. Amazon's description "jaw-dropping saga of sex and sadism" is a laugh. Nowhere close. "Lesbian lust?" Hmm... I couldn't wait for it to be over. I'm not sure where they got their idea of "extreme sadism" from. About the closest thing to kinky S&M was Eva Leon in a dog collar and chain. Don't get your hopes up. She's not exactly young or pretty and she doesn't suffer very much except for being put on a forced diet by her husband who thinks she's getting too plump. The photography however is lovely, aided by the scenic locale - Gran Canaria in the Spanish Canary Islands.
Severin deserves praise for taking the trouble to fully restore and remaster this pretty obscure film to pristine glory. It is presented in its original 2.35:1 OAR (Anamorphic). It looks absolutely gorgeous. The print is clean and near flawless. The image is sharp. Colors are rich, vibrant and always natural. It makes it a pleasure to watch. Sound is in the original Spanish 2.0 Mono with optional English subtitles. Still, a rental at most. Buy only if you're a Jess Franco fan and need to complete your collection. Personally I prefer his classic sexploitation films from the 1970s.

Customer Reviews:
Gross and reprehensible.......2004-04-22
Jean Rollin is a name instantly recognizable to hardcore horror fans, but meaningless to nearly everyone else. This ignorance is quite unfortunate because this French director concocted some of the sleaziest, most unusual films ever made during the 1970s and 1980s, films usually imbued with a disturbing mix of hypereroticism and bloody violence. I have often tossed Rollin's name around in impolite company with seeming aplomb even though I had never seen even one of the man's films. You read enough plot synopses about someone and you start to feel as though you know every intimate detail about their work. What I did hear from others about this director oftentimes did not bode well. He is apparently well versed in schlock filmmaking--which in and of itself is not a problem with me, a true lover of bad cinema--but several of his films continue to draw raves from a selected minority of genre fans. Well, I finally sat down with a Jean Rollin film, his 1979 effort "Fascination," and was pleasantly surprised with the results. As I viewed the film with a growing sense of intrigue, I began mentally composing a list of other films from this director that I should watch in the near future. First up is Rollin's 1982 gore opus "Living Dead Girl."
"La Morte Vivante," or "The Living Dead Girl," is a shocking tale of a girl raised from the dead against her will, her ravenous hunger for human blood, and the childhood friend who acts as her enabler. Catherine Valmont (Françoise Blanchard) unfortunately passed away at a young age and was buried in a crypt with her deceased mother. And there she lies still in the sleep that knows no time or space until two dolts looking for a convenient place to stash some leaky barrels of toxic waste discover the crypt and start robbing graves. Some element of the glowing green fluid has an unwholesome effect on Catherine's corpse, causing her to suddenly awake and attack the two ghouls. Valmont, barely capable of speech and deeply confused in the world of the living, begins rambling around the French countryside in an effort to relocate her old house. Initially, she only has two memories-of her house and of her childhood friend Helene (Marina Pierro). As she wanders through wide-open fields, a nosy American photographer notices her and takes a picture of the dead girl. The photographer and her goofy husband will soon play a big role in the horrific events to follow.
Catherine eventually stumbles over her house, which is obviously no longer the Valmont residence. The living dead girl starts killing off people who come to the house-a real estate agent, a couple of young kids fooling around on a couch, Jimmy Hoffa-you get the idea. It turns out Catherine must drink the blood of the living in order to remain animate. If she goes too long without quaffing the red stuff, she suffers excruciating aches and pains. Moreover, the more blood Valmont drinks, the more she remembers about her former life. She soon recalls more details about Helene and a strange blood pact the two made as children. By the time Helene appears, and after living dead girl's bestest friend expresses astonishment that her late pal is alive, the two team up to help Catherine cope with her newfound existence. Helene lures a series of people out to the house so Valmont can carve them up like a Thanksgiving turkey. Each encounter between Catherine and a hapless individual is truly gross, a bone crunching, sauce spraying adventure in graphic Technicolor. Then, tragedy strikes. Remember the photographer and her husband? They both arrive on the scene when they learn about Catherine Valmont's death and mysterious resurrection. At the same time, living dead girl begins to express a sense of remorse about the people she kills for food. The movie ends on an especially gory note.
"Living Dead Girl" is a great horror film. I liked nearly everything about Rollin's nasty little gorefest: the French scenery, the actors, and especially the squishy special effects. The director lets the camera linger over the carnage in super close-up, just so you don't miss out on any of the unpleasantness. And it is unpleasant, extremely so. The sound effects alone turned my stomach. Just in case you weary of living dead girl munching on yet another victim, Rollin throws in a hatchet in a head and a person on fire to liven things up. Even the plot going on between the gory horrors is interesting for a low budget Eurotrash horror flick. The acting isn't all that bad, although I can't completely confirm that for sure since most of the dialogue is in French. Sure, the whole thing's a bit contrived, but what horror film isn't? If you like bloody shriek cinema, you should pick this one up right away.
The DVD version of the film is an entry in Redemption's Jean Rollin Collection, which means you get to see a rather racy intro involving two female vampires before the gorefest starts in earnest. Extras on the DVD include a widescreen picture transfer, stills, and a French language trailer with the dialogue replaced by screams. I've only seen two Rollin films up to this point, but "The Living Dead Girl" is the better of the two. Apparently, this one is the best Rollin film, period. I hope not; I like to think more treasures from this director await me in the future. If not, I'll simply watch this one and "Fascination" again. "La Morte Vivante" is a must see for gorehounds specifically and horror fans in general.
too slow.......2003-07-13
I was expecting more nudity being a jean rollin film. I was disappointed by the fact that it was slow paced and lacked any thrill to the horror. I suggest you not to buy this DVD and try Zombie lake!
You didn't tell me you were dead.......2002-04-26
This is the first French horror movie I have seen and I must say ..wow. Director Jean Rollin really captures you with this film It begins with some guys going down a shaft to drop off some chemical waste (ilegally) when we see 2 coffins. Well these are mother and daughter, these guys then proceed to rob the corpses of their jewelry. All at once this poor shcmuk gets his eyes gouged out while the other one nearly **** his pants. Katherine (living dead girl) is supposed to have been dead 2 yrs
she looked quite beautiful to be dead that long. She then wanders around, thru this field where this busybody photographer starts snapping pix of her. (Wait till you see what happens to her!) Katherine's childhood friend Helene discovers her to be alive what happens next in the movie is bloodcurdling definitely a must see for all us horror fans topnotch enjoy! oh yeah The movie is French speaking but with English subtitles
Gory but Goody!.......2002-03-08
I can honestly say that this is one of the most... er... unusual films I have ever seen! When a chemical spill inadvertently resurrects a young woman who died two years before, she does not appear to be very happy to have been brought back as a "living dead girl". I suppose this would account for her disturbingly anti-social behavior (i.e. gouging out people's eyes, eating people, drinking their blood, et cetera)....P>This is a thoroughly enjoyable film, although I would strongly advise watching it on either an empty stomach or a full stomach. Unless you own stock in a barf bag company, I really do not think that you would enjoy washing down your Coke and Pizza with images of blood and guts emanating from your television screen.
Anyway, this is an A +++++ film! Enjoy, everybody!
i love the movie but hate the english subtitles.......2001-09-26
ok,i bought the movie thinking it would be english dubbed and it turned out to only be english subtitles.i like the movie but i hate reading subtitles .i even tried to sell it to a french guy at a yad sale and he wouldent take it.so if u hate movies that are not in english dont buy it.

Product Description
Fangs of the Living Dead (94 min) This is a wild & wacky vampire flick from the same director who brought you the "Blind Dead" series, mixing busty go-go style ladies & campy vampirism chills. Anita Ekberg plays Sylvia, who is surprised to learn that she has inherited a castle, from relatives that she didn't even know she had. She travels to the remote village to claim the castle, but when she gets there she can't understand why everyone panics when they find out who she is & where she is going. Sylvia also discovers her curious "Uncle", who doesn't look a day older than she does, and some vampirish babes. Sylvia is told of her family's undead history, her grandmother Malenka, and her new role as the matriarch of the vampire clan. Sylvia's fiance doesn't take too kindly to her announcement that their engagement is off, & he travels with his best friend to the castle to straighten it out. The expected vampirism and paranoia occurs, until the conclusion reveals that the whole thing has been a hoax to drive Sylvia insane and cheat her out of her inheritance. That is, until someone touches a torch to her uncle and he immediately disintegrates. This movie's complete with a spook-a-rama harpsichord & organ soundtrack, and kooky dialogue. If you can find a copy of this, you'd be wise in grabbing it up! Night of The Living Dead (98 m) Classic flick filmed on location in Pennsylvania in which chaos descends upon the world as the recently deceased become reanimated by a radiation-covered NASA satellite; to rise and feed on human flesh. As the catastrophe unfolds, a young woman visiting her father's grave takes refuge in a nearby farmhouse, where she is met by a man who protects her and barricades them inside. They both later discover people hiding in the basement, and they each attempt to cope with the situation. Panic and personal tensions only add to the terror as they try to survive.
