My husband LOVES this silly stuff. Whatever makes him happy, makes me happy!

5 out of 5 stars The wonder of "Lancelot Link-Secret Chimp".......2007-03-19

I'm giving this product the highest rating it can get, not because of the viewing quality of the DVD itself (which others have noted in their reviews), but because of the SHOW'S quality. This series is as fresh as when I last saw it, more than 35 years ago! I think I even appreciate it more now than I did then! This DVD is a treasure, in my estimation. To say "they don't make them like this anymore", is an understatement! This series was one-of-a-kind, and I'm just glad that a DVD-set was made that allows us to relive the side-splitting hilarity that is the hallmark of the show. To all "Lancelot Link" fans, happy viewing!

4 out of 5 stars The only way you'll get them on DVD.......2007-02-22

First off, I am tired of people who have no idea what they're talking about saying this is a "bootleg" or "pirated". It's not, as there is NO copyright owner of this material. Yes, I would have liked better source material, but this was kid stuff that was run over and over, and there's no pristine material out there. And no major studio, even if they held the copyright, would ever release this today...too many stereotypes like "Dragon Woman", Ali Assa-seen" and "Wang Fu". Heck, Disney won't even release the innocent "Song of the South". Just be happy this is available.

My daughter loved this series. So I bought it for her. She loves to see it over and over and I love watching it with her.

3 out of 5 stars The Missing Link In Your DVD Collection.......2007-07-06

Trog is one of those movies that has a reputation in the filmworld for being downright terrible. Right up my alley! Not as legendary as Plan 9 From Outer space, but it's a title that comes up once in a while when discussing bad films, especially bad films that feature an A-list star. The fact that such a highly recognizable and respected actress stars in this film is the only reason it has the reputation it does. Frankly, I was disapointed in Trog. I was disappointed coz it didn't live up to it's reputation. Sure, it is bad and rather silly, but not as much as you're led to believe. It's bad, but damn it, it's just not bad enough! That's unfortunate coz this film could have been very funny. Opportunities to see major actors in total schlock don't come along often. We get the occasional Hudson Hawk or Caligula, and that's good coz sometimes a major star's bad decision can be quite rewarding. Unfortunately, Trog just barely qualifies as a truly fun, campy experience. It was directed by Hammer regular, Freddie Francis, and that makes sense coz the film does look like a bottom of the barrel Hammer production. It even stars Hammer regular Michael Gough, and hardcore horror fans should be on the lookout for The Beyond's David Warbeck in a small role. Fairly simple plot: Crawford finds missing link-type apeman and wants to study it, but not everyone shares her enthusiasm. In Frankenstein tradition, he breaks free and runs amuck, and everyone gets the "Kill Trog" mentality....except Crawford of course. Not bad, a couple of laughs here and there, but not as awful as you'd expect. The acting isn't Shakespeare quality or anything, but it's not dreadful, especially on Crawford's and Gough's end. The dvd itself is pretty bare bones, but how much hidden vault material on Trog could there be? All in all, it's worth watching to say you've seen it. Trog!

4 out of 5 stars Ms. Crawford being the consummate professional that she (always) was took this movie very seriously.......2007-07-06

It was a rather low-budget movie, made overseas. But, Ms. Crawford being the consummate professional that she (always) was took this movie very seriously. To Joan, "Trog" was still a Hollywood masterpiece; and she gave just as much effort in "Trog" as she did in her Academy-Award winning defining film, "Mildred Pierce."

Joan plays Dr. Brockton, an anthropologist who is studying "Trog." As you already know, this is Joan's last picture. She is still stunning, looking and sounding amazing. The first time I watched this picture I was expecting it to be very poor (because of what I heard about it) but I was very surprised that it was not what I expected.

If you're interested in Joan's later movies, might I recommend: What Ever Happened To Baby Jane, I Saw What You Did, and The Best of Everything.

Joanie, your fans still love you after all these years!

1 out of 5 stars selfish warners pigs!.......2007-06-13

c'mon, this is insulting to joan, and insulting to her fans......and you boners at Warners always mess everything up.....

2 out of 5 stars Ugh!.......2007-06-08

Are you really going to buy the long lost "Trog" now that is is finally on DVD? Well permit me to let you know what you are in for.
Yes, folks it's Joan Crawford's last ever movie, and if it wasn't for that, I doubt that the film would ever have raised even a ripple of interest, let alone warrant a DVD issue. It probably wouldn't have even got past the financing stage to get made in the first place, it's that bad.

Anyway, Trog starts with three jolly cave explorers with very posh British accents going underground and...well, exploring a cave. They find a formerly hidden pathway to a new part of the cave, and before you know it they are being attacked by a long-hidden missing link who just happens to have been living there. When the survivors return, they meet up with Joan Crawford who plays the director of some research institute. She's fascinated by the story and demands to see the creature for herself. Next thing you know, Joan is in the middle of the cave peering into the darkness with her camera looking for Trog (never mind that the missing cave could only be accessed by wading through a cave that was neck-deep in water, Joan still looks dry and freshly pressed in a ludicrous "designer" caving outfit). And before you can say "but he's only wearing monster make-up from the neck up", poor Trog is captured and taken back to the institute for study, after which there is a predictable but very small scale outcry, followed by an even more predicable and even smaller "break-out and running riot" episode once Trog gets sprung from his cage.

You'll be able to make the tea and talk to your friends on the phone without missing anything of importance while "Trog" is playing in the background. You could probably read a good book too. All the acting is poor, and "Trog" himself is the most obvious man in a caveman outift grunting and swinging his arms about as there could ever possibly be. Poor Joan Crawford does actually bring some gravitas to her role, but her character is ruined by the script and the risible "experiments" she undertakes to try and learn about Trog. She rolls him a ball and asks him to roll it back Why? She winds up a toy doll and lets it walk towards him. Why? The whole science aspect of the plot is totally ludicrous. As is Trog's "trail of carnage", which forms the supposed highlight of the film when he escapes captivity. I was chuckling all the way through...See Trog steal some apples and oranges! See him menace the deserted streets! And especially see when he gently lifts the only occupied car in the town up onto it's side and it immediately bursts into a flaming inferno.

What a waste of celluloid this mess is. Every aspect of it is threadbare of good ideas or innovation. It does have some charm as a turkey of a period monster movie, but it's sheer badness is actually quite annoying after a while, especially the hopeless ending. Watch it if it rolls past you, but be very sure you actually need to own it before making a purchase.

Though it seems like a one-joke premise, this spinoff of Al Franken's Saturday Night Live character, self-help nerd Stuart Smalley, actually has some substance. And, in fact, it offers a message that wouldn't be out of place at an Al-Anon meeting (although with the laughs). Stuart, fired from his cable TV self-help show, goes home to resolve a family crisis. Dad (Harris Yulin) is an abusive drunk, Mom (Shirley Knight) is an enabler, Sis is an over-eater, and Brother has a problem with his temper. The film turns serious, but Franken actually makes the drama interesting, using humor to leaven it. And he brings a certain sympathy and resolve to the lisping, cross-eyed Stuart. To be sure, it's not your typical SNL movie. --Marshall Fine

3 out of 5 stars Funny- if you have nothing better to do.......2007-02-01

This was a funny movie. Probably not one of the funniest SNL movies, but better than SUPERSTAR. It would have been even better if Al Franken had not become AL FRANKEN since it came out. Even with his real life aside, it still made me laugh and I applaud his performance.

4 out of 5 stars Every bit as funny as I remembered!.......2007-01-06

This movie deserves to be a comedy cult classic. The Smalley family is as familiar as, well, your own, and the way the movie reveals their dysfunction is pitch perfect. Team up lively writing, a great cast, and the right balance of heartwarming and sarcastic humor, and you have Stuart Saves His Family.

1 out of 5 stars God Awful piece of junk. Avoid at all costs........2006-05-12

This was one of the worst bad crappy movies I've seen. Al Franken falls flat on his face in this one. I found none of the jokes funny and it was one of those squeeze a buck out of a character SNL movies. Franken is funny on SNL and Stuart actually made me laugh on the show but this movie was travesty of the first rate. Like I said there is good crappy movies which I watch like Plan 9 from Outer Space, Flash Gordon, the Monster Squad, and the like that are bad films but pieces of art that make you laugh and entertain you. This movie was not one of them. If you think I'm some right wing red neck out to get Franken your dead wrong I'm far from it although I do find this up tight new air america Franken annoying though. The point is not his politics but this stupid waste of Hollywood money on this garbage that isn't funny or entertaining at all. In fact half way through it my ex girl friend had to wake me up because my head was starting hurt her shoulder. Forget this movie if you want a good crappy movie watch "Killer Klowns from Outer Space." Trust me its the best thing to do.

5 out of 5 stars Stuart is the best!.......2006-03-17

This has to be one of the absolute best movies I have ever seen! Al Frankin is genious! I am so excited he is from Minnesota and I hope fulheartedly he intends on running for United States Senator from our state. He will not only have my vote but I will work on his campaign! Go, Al!

5 out of 5 stars I AM REBORN IN THIS FILM'S GENIUS. I SAW GOD AND HE SAID "YOU ARE A WONDROUS CREATION".......2006-01-10

As brilliant as they come. Step aside Charleton Heston. A new dramatic king is in town and his name is Stuart!!!!!!!

Both epic and heartbreakingly intimate, Nowhere in Africa begins with a Jewish woman named Jettel Redlich fleeing Nazi Germany with her daughter Regina, to join her husband, Walter, on a farm in Kenya. At first, Jettel refuses to adjust to her new circumstances (she brought with her a set of china dishes and an evening gown), while Regina adapts readily to this new world, forming a strong bond with her father's cook, an African named Owuor. But this is only the beginning of a series of uprootings, and as the surface of their lives is torn away, Walter and Jettel find they have little in common, and must--under tumultuous circumstances--build their marriage anew. With incredible skill and passion, Nowhere in Africa manages to bring you fully into every change in this family's life; it richly deserves the Academy Award® it received in 2002. A powerful, deeply moving film. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars Great Information on WW2.......2007-05-12

This movie was very moving. It tells the story alot more realist then most history books. It was long, but worth the 3 hours.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular film, beautiful cinematography.......2007-04-06

This film is AMAZING. Its now on my top ten list of the best films ever made.
Great character development, and full of irony.

It makes viewers realize how trivial and unimportant "things" are. It also makes me sick of American culture, because simplicity is not an acceptable part of life here. I gained a greater appreciation of what I have and that I don't need more. I love movies that make me think!

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2006-12-15

I very much enjoyed this movie. Unlike some others, I didn't think it was too long, or the English subtitles mysterious, or the Africans shallow. I particularly liked that for once an African character is central to the story, and more than just decoration. Sure, he was "just" the cook, but the extent to which the family came to respect, rely, and TRUST him made him part of them.

I won't describe the plot, as that has already been done by many reviewers.

Having lived in Kenya, I have to say that the European actors did a fine job with the Swahili, considering they were just memorized lines. Their delivery was natural, with the obvious caveat of the heavy accents. But even so, they all spoke like they understood what they were saying.

I also thought this was a most unusual Holocaust movie and, while ever present, the Holocaust is not bashed over the viewer's head. It was a good balance.

Furthermore, the characters were all pretty complex; the director could easily have fallen into superficial cliche, but did not. The love between husband and wife is frequently complex and conflicted, and this was illustrated artfully.

If you like films about Africa, or complex, real-life type of love stories, or are interested in a virtually unknown aspect of the Haolocaust and WWII, this is your film.

5 out of 5 stars An emotional powerhouse.......2006-12-12

This film is a truly epic experience, the type of film that one doesn't see too much of anymore these days. Based on an autobiographical novel by Stefanie Zweig, it concerns the Redlich family, one of the lucky few families to leave Nazi Germany before it was too late. Walter, the father, saw the writing on the wall and left for Kenya in 1937, sending for his wife Jettel and daughter Regina six months later, in 1938. Normally one doesn't think of refugees from the Nazis as escaping to anyplace in Africa, particularly not Kenya, although there was actually a fairly substantial Jewish community in Nairobi by the time WWII broke out, along with other refugees, such as the Redlichs, living in more isolated and less-developed areas of the nation. Jettel is a bit of a Jewish German Princess at the beginning of the film, and has a very hard time adjusting to life in Kenya. She believes living on the farm in Rongai will be temporary, and was so unaware of the reality waiting for her that she brought her fine china and bought an evening gown instead of something more practical like a refrigerator before she left home. Her character proves to be the most interesting, the one who goes through the most development, becoming a very different person by the end of the film. Walter, in contrast, has a sea change in attitude in the opposite direction, and wants to return to Germany after the war instead of staying in Kenya, which has become like a home to his family and saved their lives. They also have to deal with their troubled marriage; they'd apparently begun having some problems before they left Germany, but their marriage is really put to the test in Kenya, particularly while Walter is away in the British Army for four years and Jettel is left to tend the farm. Young Regina is also a fascinating character; being so young, she adjusts quickly to life in Kenya, although, like her parents, doesn't ever really fully come to think of it as home. She has a number of different cultures to deal with--the German culture she left behind and the one she has a connection to via her parents, the native Kenyan culture and the Swahili language, and the British culture at the colonial school she attends. (Though most of this film shows us Kenya through the eyes of people living far away from so-called civilisation, this was still a time when most of Africa was under colonial rule, a much different Africa than it is today.) Her relationship with Owuor, the native who acts as a servant to her family, is incredibly moving and touching, one of the finest aspects of this film. Unlike her mother, she never has any hesitation about or resistance to befriending the natives. She doesn't care that their skin is dark and hers is light; they're just other children she has fun with and who like being with her, the same way that she instantly takes to Owuor, seeing him as a kind man who warmly welcomes her to Kenya. On the surface this is a historical film, but the true themes are about the nature of home, alienation, self-discovery, finding oneself, loss, and how sometimes the least likely place can become a refuge and come to feel almost like home over time. What is the meaning of the word home, does a refugee or immigrant ever really completely feel at home in a foreign land, and will these people ever really feel at home anywhere again, whether they remain in Kenya, return to Germany, or start a new life in an entirely new place? It's also a nice change of pace to see a WWII-era film set in Africa, to see how the war affected the native peoples, the dominating British colonialists, and the refugees like the Redlichs. The soundtrack is also incredibly gorgeous, as is the natural scenery.

There are also a wealth of bonus features. The audio commentary is top-notch, revealing such interesting facts as how Walter's voice was actually done by the popular actor Herbert Knaup but for two undubbed scenes (one of which is conducted entirely in English), because it was felt that Merab Ninidze, the true actor, had too strong of a Georgian accent, and that Silas Kereti, who plays Regina's friend Jogona as a young adult, was initially very hesitant about performing in one of the tribal ceremonies in the film because it was being done by another tribe, and he thought that taking part would mean that he were becoming a member of this other tribe. Other extras are deleted scenes (with optional commentary); a making-of featurette; interviews with Merab Ninidze, Juliane Köhler (Jettel), Matthias Habich (Walter Süsskind, a character who immigrated to Kenya before the Redlichs), Sidide Onyulu (Owuor), and Caroline Link (the director), Peter Herrmann (the producer), and Stefanie Zweig; score selections; a storyboard comparison for the locust scene; trailers; and a photo montage with commentary.

At almost two and a half hours long (and three hours long originally), this is a truly epic picture, a real emotional powerhouse. All of the characters are developed so well and acted so masterfully that one grows to feel as though one actually knows them, has gone on this powerful life-changing journey along with them. It's also not "just another WWII movie," since the setting and themes are so very different from the usual ones. Far from just another movie, this one makes the viewer think and feel instead of just being entertaining or delivering a lot of high-tech special effects. It's a shame more films in Hollywood aren't as masterfully crafted as this wonderful highly-recommended German film.

5 out of 5 stars the choices we have to make will always haunt us.......2006-10-06

a brilliant character study of an upper middle class jewish german family who escape to kenya in the days before world war 2. having to adjust to a different world, having to learn to confront her own racism (irony of ironies), having to face up to a marriage where she is unable to love as much as she is herself loved, star juliane kohler manages to give a broad and poignant performace, as does the rest of the cast, highlighted by sidede onyulo as the african cook who becomes confessor and friend to the family. let us be thankful that others got ahold of the source material before the likes of meryl streep found it. a great film, in my top 100.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the silence you find yourself.......2007-06-08

Anyone who grows up as a "caretaker" for their parents generally matures very rapidly. The child enters adulthood very quickly and has a very overdeveloped sense of responsibility. The downside of caretaking at a young age is that the child has no time to discover who they are and what they want out of life. They are the parent who cares and nurtures instead of being the child who should be builded up, edified and protected.

Such is the charming but wrenchingly melancholy story of BEYOND THE SILENCE, Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film of 1997. Lara is a precocious "hearing" child born to two deaf parents. Lara has becomes the ears to the outside world for her parents who wish to keep her totally for themselves in their world of quiet. But Lara suffers in the world outside her home. She cannot be what she needs to be. Her reading suffers and she longs to find the expression that is beyond words and beyond the silence. The key to her breakout comes when her Aunt Clarissa gives Lara a clarinet. Lara's parents are threatened that they will lose Lara to a world that they have not been able (and perhaps willing!) to enter. Alot has to be said for the family dynamics presented in this film.

Anyone who has been misunderstood or held down by their parents whims or misunderstandings will benefit greatly from viewing this subtle and well-told story of a close-knit family that has to learn to understand each other's world. It is an amazing piece of drama sprinkled with bits of honesty and humor that propels this evenly paced film along the thin line of hope and frustration.

The film is in German with very readable subtitles.

An excellent companion film would be MR. HOLLAND'S OPUS (USA).

4 out of 5 stars Real-life portrayal of a hearing child with deaf parents........2006-04-24

Once again, we have what should have been a wonderful movie diminished by a totally unnecessary sex scene. Also, there was no point (related to the story) for Aunt Clarissa, after her husband moved out, to have a new man in her house in the next scene. Other than those incidents, it is a fine move. The 9-year-old Laura is a real sparkler.

We knew a couple of sisters who were friends of our daughters whose parents were deaf, and we found little Laura to be very much like those girls. It is a great movie to show children how the lives of some of their friends can be very much different from their own. Then, to teach them that, unlike some of the kids in the movie who were mean to Laura, if we understand the friend's life from his or her point of view we can and should be nice to them. This movie gives a real feel for the experiences and unique frustrations of a hearing child of deaf parents.

The movie is pretty much the usual child finally wins the approval of a disapproving parent story. Therefore, the main value of the film is that this child has very different obstacles to overcome that can help kids understand and accept "odd" classmates. I'd give it an 5-Stars on that basis if it wasn't for the unnecessarily thrown in scenes that go contrary to traditional values.

5 out of 5 stars This is one of the best movies I've seen in a while.......2006-01-04

Although this is a German film (the settings are Bavaria and Berlin, I believe) with subtitles, don't let the subtitles (if you don't like subtitled films) lead you to miss a really terrific film.

The story involves a hearing child (Lara) growing up with two deaf parents, who must be their translator to the hearing world. She probably matures faster, but it creates an odd relationship with her parents, since they are reliant on her.

Her father Martin doesn't get along with his sister Clarissa, so when Clarissa gives Lara her old clarinet, Martin is less than thrilled. Clarissa's clarinet playing was a problem when they were children, and he doesn't have happy memories of that clarinet. The world of music is something Martin and his wife Kai can only struggle to understand. Fortunately or unfortunately, Lara is very talented and loves playing the clarinet. The story follows Lara's life from when she is 9 or 10 to when she is 18 and going out on her own.

Ironically, there's some beautiful music in this film (I loved the piece that Lara plays on the clarinet at the end of the film). I could certainly appreciate the beauty of the sign language that Lara's parents use to communicate, but I also thought it was very sad that they couldn't hear her play, and that the loss of the ability to listen to music is a great loss indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Maturing Collision of Two Worlds.......2004-05-04

This is exquisite and delightful film of a hearing daughter of deaf parents whose father hasn't fully matured in his deafness nor reconciled with previous family issues, nor has daughter fully matured in understanding the deaf as well as family who hasn't fully matured in the integration of hearing world with the deaf world.

Catalyst of this daughter whose musical gift on clarinet causes reaction of brother-sister and daughter-father as she matures into a young adult musician.

Even with the English subcaptions this movie is a grabber and romancer. It is very well done from its cinematography to its soundtrack. The acting is excellent. I think the father resembles closely a Boris Becker add a few extra pounds.

This film dramatizes the Deaf and hearing worlds in an entertaining and provocative way that touches deep.

5 out of 5 stars Jenseits der Stille.......2003-05-30

This was an absolutely beautiful movie. It tells the story of Lara, a child with normal hearing who has two deaf parents. Although her parents can function without Lara, her parents have come to depend on her as a link to the 'hearing' world, even though she is very, very young.

Needless to say, the deafness of her parents has created interesting personality dynamics in Lara's world. One of the most strained relationships is between Lara's father and his sister Clarissa. When Clarissa introduces Lara to the clarinet, this is something that Lara latches on to, even though her parents can't comprehend the music she's playing. Because of this, and because it is Clarissa who wants her to keep at it, her parents are less than overjoyed. The film revolves around Lara growing up and excelling at playing the clarinet, and the decisions she has to make if she wants to pursue her music at a higher level. None of the characters are transparent or superficial; one gets the idea of their thoughts and their reasonings by the way they act and interact with one another.

The DVD is in German, with options for English subtitles or English for the hearing impared (It would be sad if they didn't; after all, this is a film about deaf people.) The only other "extra" is basically an advertisement for "other films you might like". However, this shouldn't deter one from enjoying this absolutely exquisite film.

4 out of 5 stars Chill Out, Man. It's A Teaser.......2006-10-13

People need to take a chill pill who keep giving this movie and others like it a bad rating. This movie and others like it are what they are and that's TEASERS. If you want hardcore you know where to go, stop giving softcore such bad ratings. If you love to watch sexy women doing anything from great to silly things, or you just love to watch women, these softcores are it. If you want hardcore go to the video store, sattlelite or cable providers. Teasers are great. So just sit back, relax, chill out and enjoy watching women doing... stuff... great or silly.

1 out of 5 stars It's amazingly silly!.......2006-01-15

Sometimes so called "video productions" of this type is so bad, that it's even interesting and funny. Not this one! The cheapest, silliest, stupidest thing I ever saw. Good packaging, though! I am sure it sales. Don't bother - just throw your money in the garbage - same effect.

2 out of 5 stars mildly funny, but not much erotic.......2005-07-11

This film is mildly enjoyable as a spoof of Lord of the Rings, but as an erotic film it's incredibly tame. I was surprised how little nudity is in it since it's played up as being such a sexy film. Since that's got to be the reason a lot of people watch it, why in the world did the producers not have some of the sexy babes who are in it romp around topless or totally in the buff through most of the film??? If you buy it to see such titillation, you'll find yourself mostly waiting for a few brief flashes every now and then. I think the overall low production values, such as the poor acting, also work against it being much erotic. So if you're getting this to watch in a mixed group or as a LOTR spoof it's OK, but forget about getting it for any kind of erotic turn-on.

4 out of 5 stars Hits the G-Spot!.......2005-04-15

Obviously, "Lord of the G-Strings" is an enjoyable spoof on "Lord of The Rings", and a pretty well-done one at that, considering the usual in this genre. The actresses are gorgeous, the film is essentially surrounded in beauty, though the dialogue is predictably weak, as is the acting, but it is all in good fun, after all. "Schmirnoff" The Wizard is a likable goofball, the Orcs here called "Dorcs" are a bumbling lot, "Dildo Saggins" takes the place of Bilbo Boggins as an enchanting girl who possesses the omnipotent G-String which must be destroyed lest it be captured by "Sourasse", who's primary weaponry consists of his deadly sulphurus emanations, battles Schmirnoff in the end. Accompanying Dildo throughout "Diddle Earth" are two lovely "Throbbit" companions who routinely pleasure each other in a lesbian lust-fest at every opportunity, although the most remarkable scenes have to be the orgy beside the camp-fire {which lasts a generous amount of time, accompanied with Middle-Eastern music which was a really great touch}, and in the pub with a very randy waitress redhead. The resident Dryad seems to be misplaced, and the two faeries are annoying until they join in the fun.

Towards the conclusion of the film, it unfortunately takes a steep direction with the inclusion of a cell-phone and a really lazy effort at the celebration by all present. The main thrust of this presentation is Lesbianism, with only one man/woman scene, although it is very entertaining nonetheless.

Eye candy all around.

5 out of 5 stars For those Who Thought Lord of The Rings was too Geeky.......2005-02-04

Come on. You got the "one g-string" Who doesn't like hot naked people in a very funny porn parody of LOTR. This is great. Plus you got hottie hot hottie Misty Mundae. She likes to do things. Can't let the erotic-y g-string fall onto the bodies of evildoers can you? This is on every time we get a free weekend of Cinemax of HBO on out sattellite. I think this is the movie that sells people to buy HBO. Fun and sexy.

This fascinating comedy questions what we mean when we use words like "nature" and "civilization." Lila (Patricia Arquette, Lost Highway, True Romance), a nature writer who grows hair all over her body, falls in love with Nathan (Tim Robbins, The Player, The Hudsucker Proxy), a scientist attempting to teach table manners to mice. While hiking in the woods, they discover Puff (Rhys Ifans, Notting Hill), a man raised in the wild since childhood, whom Nathan seizes as a test subject for his experiments--and soon these three, along with Nathan's French lab assistant (Miranda Otto) are embroiled in criss-crossed love affairs as they (and the audience) attempt to figure out what it means to be true to one's own nature. Though Human Nature isn't as surefooted as Being John Malkovich (which was also written by distinctive screenwriter Charlie Kaufman), it has moments of startling comic genius. --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars You Have Got To Be Kidding!.......2007-04-05

I like weird movies, I like bad movies. But I do not like TERRIBLE movies, and that is what you have here.
The plot if there is one sounds like it was made up while two guys were in a druken stuper. The acting is terrible, and there is NO entertainment value what so ever. Can we give it a minus 1?

5 out of 5 stars Are we moving forward or backward?.......2007-04-03

Males outwardly act to build a "civilization" based on repressing urges, secretly yearn to return to nature, yet ultimately do whatever it takes to bag some tail. Best line: "As you say in the vernacular, I want me some of that."

Females fight against nature tooth-and-nail (think cosmetics industry), and ultimately "sell their soul" to land a relationship (and the requisite baby).

Sounds pretty cynical, yet accurate, doesn't it? I don't think the human species, or any species at that, has ever made it far without a healthy prioritization of sex. What this movie does, however, is attempt to peel back the veneer we have painted upon ourselves.

I had this movie on my "to watch" list, but forgot why it was there. Shortly into it, I got weirded-out by the imagery and matter-of-fact treatment of some pretty ludicrous scenes. I thought, "Is this a joke?" I stuck with it and only during the end credits did I realize it was Michel Gondry and Spike Jonze flick, and a Charlie Kaufmann Freudian-tinged script.

I'm sure there's much to this movie that I am missing (What is the meaning of the scientist's new little brother? Where exactly is the white room?). I'm purposely writing this review before reading any other reviews or analysis at all, so I can't pretend that I figured out all the metaphor and simile on my own. Maybe the movie demands a second viewing? Or maybe, like good art, the movie is only a conduit by which we find the answers within ourselves. That sounded good, huh?

1 out of 5 stars Do I have to give it even 1 star? :-(.......2006-09-15

A truly awful, abysmal movie, its only redeeming quality is its ability to make me fall into deep slumber. Everyone is awful in it. One only wonders if actors really have no options in the jobs they take.

Stupid, tasteless, boring, asinine. Not worth any more thought.

3 out of 5 stars People are Strange.......2006-08-15

I have to admit, I had really high hopes for this movie. Made by Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry, the same writer/director team that worked together on one of my favorite movies ('Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'), and featuring Rhys Ifans and Miranda Otto, who were so good together in another favorite of mine ('Danny Deckchair'), I figured I had good reason to get excited about this. While I was not completely disappointed, it should be said that 'Human Nature' was something of a letdown for me.

At least it's original. 'Human Nature' is the story of four people who come together through some pretty unique circumstances. Tim Robbins is a scientist trying to teach table manners to mice, as the result of an interesting set of neuroses. Patricia Arquette, cursed since puberty with out-of-control body hair, plays Robbins' girlfriend and eventual assistant. Rhys Ifans is the scruffy man who was raised as an ape in the wild. And rounding out the list is Miranda Otto, the cute French lab assistant who has bigger dreams and naughtier intentions. Nobody in the film, of course, is quite what they seem or what they wish to be, and as the story progresses they all interact in different (often surprising!) ways. At the very least, the story will keep your attention to see what happens next.

Hilary Duff fans, take note...she appears for maybe 30 seconds in 'Human Nature' as a young (teenage) Patricia Arquette, when she first discovers her hair growth. It was a surprising appearance if you're not expecting it (I wasn't), but nothing to get excited about if you're a fan.

'Human Nature' has its funny moments, and its sad moments, and many that are an odd mixture of both. As Robbins and Arquette first find the man-ape Ifans, their ideas of his situation are completely opposite: Robbins wants to re-train the apeman to be a refined and dignified gentleman, while Arquette wants to let him explore his freedom. Otto's French lab assistant's motives aren't ever really clear, except for the idea that she's mostly looking out for herself. The thematic question becomes obvious: which is the 'true' nature of humanity? Is humanity defined by it's ability to rise above the base animal instinct and be civilized, or is it preferable to free the beast within us and live as we wish? The film provides no ready answer to this, but does give you the chance to explore the ideas of it.

There's nothing specific I found disappointing about the movie, just a general feeling that at some point it got so strange that it lost me. Was it Patricia Arquette's oddly-placed nude (well, sort of) singing scene? Was it Miranda Otto's questionable French heritage? Rhys Ifans getting shocked over and over for his natural reaction to seeing a naked woman? Probably, it was the overall effect of all of these things, and others like them. Taken all together, I never felt like the movie found its direction. It's not so much that it lost me...just that it never really found me in the first place.

I like some pretty oddball movies sometimes, but 'Human Nature' might be just a little over the line even for me. It's funny, it's got some good performances, and it's definitely an original. My overall impression in the end, though, is that it's just... strange.

Perhaps that's the point.

4 out of 5 stars Weird, Different, but Interesting!! VERY ORIGINAL MOVIE!!.......2006-01-29

Charlie Kaufman may be the most original writer for screenplays in HOLLYWOOD, having contributed to weird movies such as Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, Adaptation and Human Nature, HUMAN NATURE Plot: Take a beautiful girl (Patricia Arquette) with a condition of extreme hair growth that grows all over her body, decides she hates humanity because of all the abuse she gets from being different. SO she decides to live with nature, abandoning humanity. After a while she becomes increasingly lonely, so she decides to live back with humanity for the purpose to meet a guy and decides to get treated getting rid of her HaiR growth problem. In her search for a guy she meets a weird scientist(tim robbins) who is trying to teach mice table manners. They get married and go hiking one day to meet a man who lives by himself in the wilderness, who can't speak and is completely un aware of humanity. This becomes a great opportunity for the scientist to see if he can teach a primate to learn table manners. SOUND STRANGE? it get's weirder, you'll just have to see it for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Seduction Cinema!!!.......2006-08-07

I first saw this movie on Cinemax. Being that this is the first SC release (to my knowledge) to premiere on national TV, you know it has to be decent at best. But decent would be an understatement! Hands down, this is John Bacchus' greatest work to date. It is a no brainer that this is a spoof of Planet of the Apes. This parody is hilarious! John Bacchus shows his acting potential as General Laid with several humorous punchlines in much of his dialogue. As always, Misty Mundae and Darian Caine give outstanding performances. Mundae plays an Air Force pilot/ astronaut who along with her crew get captured by the Apes for trespassing so to speak. I think it would have been nice to see Ruby LaRocca or AJ Kahn but females casted were an excellent supporting cast. The female interactions were more erotic than I've ever seen in a Seduction Cinema film. There was plenty of hot, passionate kissing and the simulated sex was top value. I found the Polish sensation simply known as Anoushka to be rather sexy for some reason (perhaps because she is Polish). Overall, Playmate of the Apes is funny, sexy and entertaining and a great way to waste an hour and a half. IF John Bacchus would stick to the formula he used when working on this film, he would have a hit every time!

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst films I have ever, ever seen........2005-07-05

Words all but fail me when it comes to attempting to convey how bad this thing actually is. Although it may claim to be "satire," one requirement of satire is that... there actually be some humor present. That would be difficult to achieve, since as far as I can tell the script was written by a misogynistic nine-year-old boy weaned on a steady diet of "The Benny Hill Show." Satire takes some actual brain-wattage; none is present here.

The actresses portrayed on the box art are *nowhere near so alluring* in the actual film, although to be fair there are women present who look even worse than they do.

So, in short, if you enjoy seeing physically unpleasing women continually make out with each other, [and generating all the heat of the average mini Christmas tree light bulb in doing so... and I mean just ONE BULB, not an entire string of lights] you may like this. A love of silicone implants and bad poetry will also stand you in good stead. Everyone else with a working brain, steer clear. It is one of those things of which may honestly be said, "I am now stupider for even having SEEN that."

The only reason it gets one star is because 0 stars is not an option.

3 out of 5 stars The wrongest cinematic 'ape' ever!.......2004-08-05

I caught my first glimpse of this on some late-night premium cable channel over at the `rents' place some time back. It was just me & dad in the living room, and he was searchin' for something to watch. He eventually settled on this, and we laughed at the utter silliness of the weird-looking hominids before us. We were entertained by the pink-suited `poofter' ape, as well as the military leader ape who spouted off naughty British slang in a Cockney accent that gave me `Monty Python' flashbacks. Then came the big ape-vs-human fight/rap/dance scene in the middle of a forest that was so dumb that both me & pops couldn't help but laugh at its utter retardedness. But then came one of many nudie lesbo scenes between several of the silicone-enhanced human females, and the atmosphere in the living room got a bit, shall we say, uncomfortable. It's weird enough to be watching a mug-runching scene that borders on hardcore porn all by your lonesome; watching it with your father is just plain wrong. Fortunately, pops had the good sense to switch over to something a bit less provocative: `Real Sex XXXVIII' was playin' on the next channel up...

After this strange initial encounter I decided to hunt down a copy of `Play-Mate of the Apes' on DVD, and give the entire flick a look. What I ended up seeing was a few relatively brief so-dumb-it's-funny moments of `Planet of the Apes' satire with some of the hokiest-looking not-so-special visual effects couched between a half-dozen extensive scenes of lezzie lust. Oddly enough, I didn't find any of these naughty bits particularly, er, exciting, which is primarily due to the fact that the hardcore stuff I've been exposed to has pretty much spoiled me for any other similar form of, er, artistic expression. Ya know, I think I've told ya far more about me than you wanted to know, so I'll just cool down a bit, and devote the next paragraph to my thoughts on the disc's special features.

Needless to say, I was kinda shocked to discover this DVD actually had special features! These extras include a couple trailers for the movie-- both of which are chock-full of nudies-- a few behind-the-scenes looks at the making of the movie (including the filming of one of the naughty scenes), and interviews with the director (who plays the aforementioned Cockney ape) and principal... actresses (*Snicker*). As I expected, the cast members took way too seriously the whole experience making the movie, as if pretending to bump incompatible uglies is gonna cure cancer or something. And just what in the #ell did I mean by that last sentence, anyway? Sorry `bout that, folks-- this is the kinda weird shiznit I come up with when I'm writing an Amazon product review in the middle of the night while on two hours' sleep and buzzed on Jolt® cola. Sad thing is, I usually do my best work in this state...

4 out of 5 stars An experiment in terror........2007-02-15

This film was a decent horror film about a killer chimp who terrorizes a bunch of people in an old English mansion, it offers a great deal of suspense so if you like movies where animals attack people for no reason then your gonna love this. A young university student played by Elisabeth Shue goes to work for an eccentric profeser played by Terance Stamp who deals with monkeys and is soon held hostage by the main Orangatun buttler named Link who gets very aggressive cause of the way hes been mistreated by the profeser, the profeser soon disapears only to be found dead and it seems like the young student is left on her own to defend her self. A few people also arrive at this mansion only to be killed by Link, its not really explained how he becomes this way but I think its because of the fact that hes been disregarded by his owner who keeps underestimating his intelligence. This film also has some neat death scenes like when the guy gets his arm ripped out of its socket by Link but its not shown in graphic detail and the film wasn't that gory, the film has some nice scenery as the mansion is located near the ocean on top of a cliff so it doesn't seem like the victims could escape. The monkeys were very good infact they were better than the actors who were just O.K., the pace of the film was a bit slow during the beginning but then it got better as Link starts going crazy even though the film was quite silly it was still enjoyable like a guilty pleasure. Overall I would have to say that it was a very good thriller/horror film, Anchor Bay didn't provide any special features for this film except for two trailers and the transfer was very good enjoy.

Everyone's got goals in life, things they hope to achieve at some point or another, and one of mine was to someday have my very own monkey butler...alas, after watching the film Link (1986) I'm having second thoughts as I've learned you can take a hulking orangutan out of the jungle, dress him up in butler gear and teach him to serve, but at some point he'll probably go a bit nutty on you and rip your arm out of the socket just for kicks...directed by Richard Franklin (Roadgames, Psycho II, Cloak & Dagger), the film stars Elisabeth Shue (The Karate Kid, Leaving Las Vegas, Hollow Man) and Terence `General Zod' Stamp (Superman II, Alien Nation, The Limey). Also appearing is Steven Pinner, Richard Garnett (Doomsday Gun), and David O'Hara (Hotel Rwanda).

Shue plays Jane Chase, and American college student in England who lands a housekeeping/assistant gig with an eccentric professor named Dr. Steven Phillip (Stamp) in his isolated, coastal country estate, the majority of the residents being primates (seems the professor's experiments involve trying to find the common ground between human and primate intelligence or some such thing). As Jane arrives at Doctor Phillip's home, she meets the three beasts, the first being an orangutan butler named Link (whose actually dressed as a butler and likes to smoke cigars...a habit he picked up in the circus), a young chimpanzee named Imp, and an older female chimpanzee named Voodoo. Not long after Jane settles in the apes stage a sort of revolt (Link learns of his impending `early' retirement), the Professor goes missing, and Jane soon finds herself prisoner within the house, which is fortified with bars on the windows, cut off from the outside world as someone (or something) has trashed the phone line. Not only that but it seems Link has taken a real shine to Jane, illustrated earlier by his penchant for ogling her as she strips to take a bath (which also provides us with a brief side shot of a nekkid Shue), even to the point of being jealous of Jane's playful relationship with Imp, the small chimpanzee.
