From the innovative "James Bond Western" style of A Fistful of Dollars (1964) to the complete restoration of Duck You Sucker (1971), The Sergio Leone Anthology pays lavish tribute to one of the greatest of all Italian directors. A lifelong film buff deeply influenced by the movies he enjoyed as an uneducated youth in southern Italy, Leone (1929-1989) had officially directed only one previous film (1961's The Colossus of Rhodes) when he recruited a relatively unknown American TV star named Clint Eastwood (on a modest salary of $15,000) and made cinema history with A Fistful of Dollars, not the first Western made by an Italian but certainly the first truly Italian entry in the "Spaghetti Western" genre that Leone virtually invented. Each of the four films included in this eight-disc set are influential milestones in that once-maligned, now-celebrated genre, and while Leone's classic Westerns were largely dismissed by critics throughout the 1960s and '70s, they now stand as the masterworks of a visionary artist who was posthumously elevated into the pantheon of world-class filmmakers. To acknowledge Leone's historic impact on the genre, the Leone Anthology includes MGM's previous two-disc extended-cut collector's edition of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966), and applies the same deluxe treatment to A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More (1965), and, for the first time on DVD, the fully restored English-language version of the original 157-minute Italian cut of Duck You Sucker (previously known by its alternate U.S. title A Fistful of Dynamite), which was never shown in American theaters.

A Fistful of Dollars is best known in America for spawning the "Man With No Name" marketing campaign that made Eastwood a star, although Eastwood's character is clearly named "Joe" in this cleverly adapted low-budget remake of Akira Kurosawa's samurai classic Yojimbo, in which Eastwood's lone drifter vies for strategic advantage in a corrupt Mexican town divided by a bitter family feud. The operatic qualities that grew increasingly lavish in Leone's later films are evident here on a smaller scale, along with the modern, innovative score of Ennio Morricone, whose legendary collaborations with Leone (on all four of these films) were vital to the director's deliberate defiance of Hollywood's Western traditions. Fistful was an instant success in Italy and its immediate sequel, For a Few Dollars More, is often cited as the definitive Spaghetti Western, with a bigger budget ($600,000) and a charismatic costar with Eastwood (Lee Van Cleef) in an uneasy alliance between gunslingers that introduced a hint of humanity to Leone's increasingly de-mythologized vision of the West. While teaming Eastwood, Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach in a ruthless Civil War-era quest for buried Confederate gold, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly completed Leone's "Dollars" trilogy (filmed primarily on locations in Spain) on a truly epic scale, introducing the darker cynicism, grander ambition, and artistic maturity that defined Leone's later films.

Leone vowed to quit making Westerns after his 1968 masterpiece Once Upon a Time in the West (a Paramount release not included in this set), but circumstances led him to seize the directorial reins of Duck You Sucker, a dynamic yet deeply disillusioned study of revolution that can now take its rightful place among Leone's greatest films. Like several of Leone's films, Duck You Sucker suffered a long history of cuts, re-cuts, and censorship, and the fully restored 157-minute version (unseen since the film's 1971 Italian premiere) more effectively explores the complex friendship between an Irish rebel explosives expert (James Coburn) and a brutish Mexican bandit (Rod Steiger) who becomes a reluctant revolutionary in 1913 Mexico. With explosive action sequences that remain among the most impressive ever filmed, Duck You Sucker now gives richer meaning to the film's original Italian title Giù la testa ("Keep Your Head Down"), asserting Leone's theme that family is far more important than the devastating violence of revolution. In the Leone Anthology (a variation on previous DVD sets released in England, Germany, and Japan), Duck You Sucker is the long-awaited crown jewel in a box-set of cinematic treasures. And while Leone purists will endlessly debate over the image quality (generally quite impressive) and 5.1-channel soundtrack mixes included here, there's no denying that The Sergio Leone Anthology is the definitive Leone tribute for a technically demanding 21st-century audience, and that's cause for enthusiastic celebration. --Jeff Shannon

On the DVDs
Listed in the glossy 32-page booklet that accompanies this eight-disc set (also including cast lists, scene selections, brief synopses, and behind-the-scenes details), the bonus features found in The Sergio Leone Anthology provide a comprehensive study of Leone's career, themes that dominated his work, and the historical contexts that inform Leone's classic "Spaghetti Westerns." With an even balance of lively authority and erudite scholarship, acclaimed Leone biographer and British film historian Sir Christopher Frayling provides informative commentary on A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and Duck You Sucker, while Time magazine critic Richard Schickel's equally astute commentary remains on MGM's previous two-disc release of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. (Many of these features were prepared for the U.K. version of The Leone Anthology, including interviews conducted in 2003 and 2005.) In addition to a wide variety of vintage American radio promotional spots for these films, the meticulously researched and delightfully fascinating "location comparisons" show "then and now" scenes from all four films, with original film clips perfectly matched to location photos taken in 2004 by devoted Leone fans Donald S. Bruce and Marla J. Johnson.

Extras on A Fistful of Dollars begin with "A New Kind of Hero" (22:53), Frayling's behind-the-scenes analysis of the film's innovative anti-hero played by Clint Eastwood, whom Leone hired (when first choices Henry Fonda, James Coburn, Lee Marvin, and Charles Bronson proved too expensive) after seeing Eastwood in a 1961 episode of Rawhide. In the interview featurette "A Few Weeks in Spain" (8:33), Eastwood recalls the experience of making the film on location, and "Tre Voci" (or "Three Voices") is an 11-minute combination of retrospective interviews with producer Alberto Grimaldi, screenwriter Sergio Donati, and Mickey Knox, an American actor living in Rome who provided many of the post-synchronized voices for the English-language versions of Leone's films. In "Not Ready for Prime Time" (6:20), maverick American director Monte Hellman describes the circumstances that led to his direction of an explanatory Fistful of Dollars prologue for the film's American network TV premiere on August 29, 1977. Featuring Harry Dean Stanton, and filmed as an attempt to "legitimize" the Man With No Name's seemingly immoral behavior, the rarely-seen prologue (7:44) is introduced by obsessive Leone fan Howard Fridkin, who saved his Betamax recording from the one-time-only 1977 broadcast.

Frayling examines For a Few Dollars More in "A New Standard" (20:15), a "making of" featurette with emphasis on the film's male/male dynamic (described by Frayling as Leone's "invention of the brother he never had"). In "Back for More" (7:08), Eastwood recalls how he'd begun to watch Leone to inform his own directorial ambitions. "Tre Voci" (11:05) continues the retrospective interviews with Grimaldi, Donati, and Knox, and "The Original American Release Version" (5:19) examines three edits (including removal of the name "Manco" so Eastwood's character could remain "nameless" in the film's American marketing) that were made for the film's U.S. release.

Extras on The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly are highlighted by "Leone's West" (19:53) and "The Leone Style" (23:47), a pair of excellent documentaries exploring the film itself and the evolution of Leone's visual style as his budgets and production values grew to epic proportions. Featuring interviews with Clint Eastwood, critic and Eastwood biographer Richard Schickel, and others, these are must-see features packed with entertaining observations and anecdotes. Lending historical context to Leone's film, "The Man Who Lost the Civil War" is a 14-minute excerpt from a documentary about ill-fated Confederate general Henry Hopkins Sibley's botched campaign to expand Confederate dominance in the West. The "Reconstruction" featurette (11:07) is a detailed study of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly's painstaking restoration to Leone's intended 179-minute extended cut, featuring an interview John Kirk, the MGM director of technical operations who supervised the film's meticulous reconstruction. The essential contribution of composer Ennio Morricone is celebrated in the "Il Maestro" featurette (7:47) and film music historian Jon Burlingame provides an excellent audio-only survey (12:29) of Morricone's most popular soundtrack. Deleted scenes include the extended "Tuco torture" sequence (in which the brutal beating of Eli Wallach's character is masterfully cross-cut with the melancholy performance of a prison-camp orchestra); the brilliant "Socorro sequence" that was drastically edited in previous cuts; and a French trailer revealing shots and alternate angles not seen in the film's various theatrical releases. The poster gallery includes eight posters from the film's international marketing campaigns.

For Duck You Sucker, Frayling's film-by-film analysis continues in "The Myth of Revolution" (22:10), a behind-the-scenes study of Leone's deepening artistic maturity, as manifested in the film's cynical view of political revolution. "Donati Remembers" (7:20) is a continuation of the retrospective interview with screenwriter Sergio Donati (who by the early '70s was urging Leone to return to smaller-scale filmmaking), and "Once Upon a Time in Italy" (6:00) explores the ambitious effort that went into creating the definitive traveling exhibit of material (props, posters, costumes, etc.) from Leone's archives and beyond, first shown at the Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage, in Los Angeles, California, in July 2005. In "Sorting Out the Versions" (11:37), film historian Glenn Erickson narrates a visual survey of the various cuts and changes made to Duck You Sucker during its tortured history of global distribution, and in "Restoration Italian Style" (6:07), MGM director of technical operations John Kirk outlines the painstaking effort to restore Duck You Sucker to its original Italian premiere length of 157 minutes, resulting in the first-ever English language version based on the film's Italian-language restoration of 1996. The disc concludes with the enjoyable "Location Comparisons" (9:32), six rare radio spots from the film's original U.S. release in 1972, and (as with all other films in this set) the original theatrical trailer. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A couple of these are among the best westerns ever!.......2007-06-25

The Good The Bad and The Ugly is certainly in the top ten best westerns ever and For a few Dollars More in the top ten or at least top twenty. See my amapedia review below for more details.

5 out of 5 stars Four classic Leone movies given the deluxe treatment and FINALLY released in the U.S. on DVD.......2007-06-10

Prepared for release in 2005 we've only had to wait two years for this deluxe reissue of three of the four Leone films included here. For those that want to know this box set has a 32 page booklet with credits and essays on the films but no postcards like the original release of "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly". If you want the collectable version, I suppose you'll have to buy these individually. This set is definitely worth picking up as it is a HUGE improvement over all the previously released home video versions of the film. All the films look terrific, have commentary tracks (although "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" is the exact same release as before)and great featurettes/extras that were released overseas two years ago.

"Fistful of Dollars" looks very good in its new DVD transfer lovingly restored although there is an odd strobe like effect in one sequence. We get a terrific commentary track from Leone scholar Sir Christopher Frayling discussing the making of the film, the delayed release in the United States (part of which was related to Akira Kurosawa's lawsuit. It was legit though since "Fistful" is an unauthorized remake of Kurosawa's classic "Yojimbo" although Leone's version of the same story is equally compelling), how Henry Fonda and Charles Bronson (who called it one of the worst scripts he had ever read...interesting considering he later appeared in "Once Upon a Time in the West")both turned down the lead role.

Eastwood reveals in a featurette that he wrote much of his own dialogue for the film, made his own script notes all of which contributed to truly making the role his own.

"For a Few Dollars More" looks exceptional. Like all the films here, it is released in an anamorphic widscreen transfer that does justice to the deep, rich colors of the films. There is one scene where there appears to be some sort of scratch on the film that wasn't corrected but otherwise the film looks beautiful. We also get Eastwood again discussing the making of the film, Sir Christopher Frayling with another very good commentary track as well as a section that compares three variations in the film (the sequence where Manco and Mortimer are beaten up has a slightly longer more brutal variation and we also see the way UA released the film with a brief trim that eliminated Manco's name to tie the film into the promo campagin that UA had for "The Man with No Name").

"The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" is exactly the same as the 2005 release on DVD right down to the graphics on the disc. Sir Christopher Frayling did record a commentary track for this after it was released hoping that it could be added to later editions (he wasn't available for the original remaster. Time critic Richard Schickel does the honors here). The extras are exactly the same. For those that are interested this includes the 5.1 mix that had new sound effects for that mix but does not include the original mono soundtrack in English.

"Duck You Sucker" comes in the most complete version released so far. At 157 minutes it is closest to Leone's original cut of the film. The film looks exceptionally good. It's clear that John Kirk went the extra mile to get this right. Also, kudos to Glenn Erickson (aka DVD Savant at DVD Talk)who worked on the featurettes and started the campaign to get these films restored and released on home video ages ago.

Again, Sir Christopher Frayling does a very good commentary track discussing the various versions of the film released. The soundtraack has been reprocessed for 5.1. Sergio Donati a collaborator of Leone's discusses working on the film in a featurette and how Eli Wallach was replaced by Rod Steiger at United Artist's insistance but that Leone never shared the information with Wallach. "Restoration Italian Style" features John Kirk who worked on this special project discusses how he went about reassembling the film for this edition. We also get location comparisons (this is also on the other discs as well)showing scenes from the film and how the locations look now. "The Autry Exhibit" is a featurette on a show assembled by Frayling and Estela Chung for a Leone exhibit. Unfortunately, that happened in 2005 when this was ORIGINALLY was supposed to be released before MGM was bought by Sony throwing this and other releases into limbo. "Sorting out the Versions" uses stills, footage used to show us scenes that weren't included in the movie.

The whole set is assembled in a cardboard foldout box with the discs resting on top of each other. There's a little holder built into the set for the booklet.

Overall this is a terrific set and an essential addition to fans of Leone's westerns. Although it took two years to get this released in the United States (that's nothing compared to the delay for the second season of "Twin Peaks" for even the release of the pilot for that show in the U.S.), it was worth the wait. I'm not sure what the Blu-Ray plans are for this release yet so I went ahead and plunked down the money for the whole set. Fans who already have "TGTBATU" may want to buy these individually although it would be more expensive than this set. MGM (and Fox which distributes all MGM titles now even though MGM is held by Sony)have done a terrific job with this set. My only complaint is that it would have been nice to have the collectable postcards that reproduced the lobby cards/posters. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Where's the postcards!.......2007-06-07

I'm glad I didn't dump my copy of the previous "collectors edition" of G/B/U when I first pre-ordered this set, because the cool set of postcards reproducing international posters is NOT included in this set.

Does anyone know if the individual "collectors edition" releases of the other films, FOD/FFDM & Duck You Sucker come with any such goodies?

So five stars for the discs, but four for leaving out the postcards...

3 out of 5 stars Unsure.......2007-06-06

I already own The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - Extended Cut (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

I've waited 3 years for the other Leone movies to come out on the Collector's Editions...Now I have to decide what to do.

Should I buy the three movies separately or buy the entire box set? Buying them individually would be cheaper...but will I lose out on anything by doing this and not buying the entire edition?

I don't know what to do...can anyone comment?

5 out of 5 stars At long last..........2007-06-05

Like others in this thread, I too wondered why it took MGM soooo long to put this out. After seeing the fantastic work with TGBU remastering, I am excited to see what's in store for the rest of these masterpieces. BTW, in the Editorial Review, Jeff Shannon, as seems to be the case with numerous film critics, incorrectly states about Fistfull of Dollars "...although Eastwood's character is clearly named "Joe"...". Sure,he is called that but only by one person, the undertaker, in the entire film. His name was never revealed by his character nor was he referred to by any other name. I guess one could debate whether or not the undertaker even said "Joe" considering that his english dialogue was obviously dubbed. Oh, well. Enjoy the new releases!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best shows on TV.......2007-06-15

I can honestly say I haven't enjoyed a TV show this much since Friends.

America Ferrara, quite possibly one of the most beautiful people I have ever seen, stars as Betty, a young aspiring journalist/writer who is employed at "Mode"-a high fashion magazine-by the owner of the massive enterprise to help control his notoriously promiscuos party-boy son Daniel. Betty herself IS rather unfortunate looking, with little sense of style, apparent dental problems, and the lack of a waxer. However, despite the rather misleading title, the story is not at all about emphasizing her unattractiveness or a sort of a "makeover". Betty is a nice girl, with morals and a heart-a very genuine person...a stark contrast to all of the beautiful but unimpressive models and other personalities of Mode.

The series follows Betty's friends and family members, all well-drawn and complex, with numerous faults but ultimately you feel for them. Her family consists of her illegal immigrant but good-hearted father Ignacio, obnoxious and slightly high strung yet lovable sister Hilda, and her rather swooshy nephew, Justin. The family goes through a plethera of very realistic problems throughout the whole. Justin's father is-at the beggining- a shady figure, scantly in his life and then only to criticize. As the series progresses, however, he grows as a person and by the end you really want him to succeed(he doesn't, no other spoilers). Her father has a rather shady but understandable past, and is eventually shipped back to Mexico-his fate is questionable at the end of the series, however you know some pretty bad things are bound to happen.

Her other friends are equally colorful. The series begins with Betty in a serious relationship with Walter, a rather bland(read: GEEKY) man, who cheats on her, dumps her, and then wants her back again. However, he is ever-so-slightly redeemed with his grovelling and begging, along with his obvious remorse for what he has done, but nonetheless you know he is NOT good enough for her. Henry, a dorky-but-cute accountant at Mode, is. However, Betty is unsure of her feelings for him, and then she is dating Walter, and then she is not, and then he has a girlfriend, and many other mishaps come up. Henry is a charming, likeable guy who is undoubdtedly genuine in his feelings for Betty, their relationship is complex, interesting, and real.

The show is at its strongest, however, when dealing with the characters at Mode. While they may be darker shades of gray than Betty's friends and family, they are also more complex, more well-drawn, and more interesting. Daniel is a ladies man as established from day uno. However, there is another quality about him, that somewhere inside of him he is a good guy. He is troubled by losing his older brother, Alex, and has used women to get over it since it happened. Likewise, he becomes friends with Betty-perhaps the most stable relationship he's got. He becomes dependant upon his girlfriend-a captivating Selma Hayak-only to have his heart broken in a very public way. He then suffers a relapse and returns to his old ways, to only get worse as the season progresses. You really feel for Daniel, even if you frown upon his skirt-chasing ways.

Daniel's family is even more complex and interesting. His brother Alex turns out to be not so dead after all, in fact he is alive and well-except that he is now a she. The gorgeous Rebecca Romijn stars as her, and gives a highly sympathetic performance despite the fact that her concealing her survival from her family is a rather unlikable action. Her mother is similarly sympathetic, but you get mixed feelings towards her. She seems like a kind woman-she is-but she also is an alcoholic. Oh yeah, and she killed her husband's mistress. She was very mistreated by said mistress, and her husband, but that hardly makes it understandable. However, you don't hate Mrs. Meade and can actually feel for her. Mr Meade is easily the most unlikable character in the show, but you still find yourself feeling for him from time to time.

There is a Henry VIII-esq love triangle between Mr. Meade, Mrs. Meade, and Whilimena Slater. Whilimena is a very ambitious, intelligent, and somewhat likable "other woman" who seduces Mr. Meade so as to someday be the owner of Mode. For a while you think Whilly is a completely unsympathetic character until you examine her rocky relationship with her ungreatful daughter and the general emptiness of her life. Her two spastic assistants are the best-written characters. The "gay man" required in any and all comedies is both stereotypical and complex-he is on the surface rather flamboyant and harsh, but underneath it is a layer of sweetness and compassion, evident in his defending of Justin, eventual friendship of sorts with the formerly harrased Betty, and defending of Amanda. Amanda, the other assistant, is blonde and beautiful with the obvious bitchy exterior. Inwardly, however, is a broken heart and lonely woman, who it turns out, never knew her mother and is in love with Daniel.

The beauty of Ugly Betty is that, despite the obvious temptation, they have not once "made over" Betty. If they did, I would probably stop watching. The moral center of this show(that what is on the inside is all that really counts) seems obvious and cliche, is helpful in this Laguna Beach and Paris Hilton culture. As the main character is not a whiny brat with superficial problems and equally glossy friends, we can like Betty, sympathize with her and her problems, and revel in her happiness.

Two things that made the show even better than the five stars I've given it-the appearance of Kristin Chenowith in the finale(I am a broadway lover and Wicked addict) and the "B" necklace Betty wears. If you all didn't know, the necklace existed long before "Ugly Betty" and was, in fact, worn by Anne Boleyn, a Queen of England and personal hero of mine. It was just a lovely addition to a perfect show.

Highly, fully reccomended.

5 out of 5 stars One most the most pleasant and fun shows on television.......2007-05-18

In retrospect, the 2006-2007 television season debuted an unusually large number of first rate new series: HEROES, MEN IN TREES, 30 ROCK, BROTHERS AND SISTERS, DEXTER, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, and UGLY BETTY. That is a remarkably strong group of new shows. UGLY BETTY occupied a unique niche among them. The new show it most resembled was MEN IN TREES. Both were light fare, intended to entertain and charm rather than challenge and rattle. It was unorthodox, but in comforting ways. It was, basically, a very nice show. One never came away from any episode shocked or dismayed as with the best episodes of DEXTER or FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, but to tell the truth, after a week of watching my favorite shows on TV--BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, LOST, DEXTER, and others that were sometimes exceedingly emotional affairs to watch, I found it a refreshing change of pace, never shocking, never emotionally taxing, never intellectually demanding. It managed always to be smart while also very easy to absorb. Most of all, it was great fun.

The plot was simple. Betty Suarez desires a job in publishing. After she applies at MODE magazine, where she has a disastrous interview, she finds herself mysterious hired as assistant to editor Daniel Meade, playboy son of Meade Publishing owner Bradford Meade. It turns out that Bradford had seen her leaving the building and ordered her hired for his son simply because she is as far from a fashion model in appearance as can be imagined. She has terrible hair, dresses horridly, has garish braces, thick glasses (and eyebrows), and carries more weight than your standard attractive woman. Father makes her employment mandatory for his rare-do-well son. Very quickly, however, she proves herself not merely necessary for Daniel's professional life, but a good friend as well. One of the most attractive aspects of the show is, in fact, their genuinely caring, completely platonic, friendship. Working at MODE pulls Betty into a world of interoffice intrigue and political infighting. To be honest, I could have lived without any of the stories. The appeal was just about 100% based on a large number of likable and adorable characters popping up each week.

America Ferrera, who had previously been amazingly effective in the cult-hit film REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES and the teen chick flick THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS (a sequel to the latter is due in 2008), simply steals this show as Betty. Though not a slender actress, America in fact has a beautiful face. They do a great make up job on her, however, putting a terrible wig on her each week (with very stressed looking hair), gluing thick, fake eyebrows on her, giving her thick-framed, brightly colored glasses, fake braces, make up to give her an unpleasant complexion, and an incredibly unflattering set of clothes. Despite this dramatic transformation each week, Betty manages to be utterly charming and adorable. A couple of people I've talked to feel it is a bit of a cheat to have an attractive woman play someone who is supposed to be "ugly," but I think it would be a bit cruel to take an unattractive person and have them play such a role. I would be surprised if she does not get an Emmy nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy. Lauren Graham deserves to win in this category (as she does every year) for her genius work in THE GILMORE GIRLS, but since the Emmys year after year have ignored Graham (her show is on the wrong network), I will probably be pulling for America to win.

Ferrera is supported by an amazingly strong cast. Eric Mabius is wonderful as Daniel, consistently showing himself to be a decent guy despite his efforts to transform himself into a waste of humanity. I think there is a secret contract someone dictating that Alan Dale appear in every other show on TV in some capacity or other. He is his usual stern self as Bradford Meade (he also has a very occasional but ongoing role in LOST, the only show I've seen him on where he gets to use something like is native Kiwi accent). Vanessa Williams is a lot of fun as the scheming and unscrupulous Wilhelmina Slater, the fashion editor at MODE who would love to be the editor in chief. Ashley Jensen, who really is Scottish, plays the head of wardrobe at MODE and one of Betty's few friends at the magazine. But the people at MODE who make the show worth watching are Michael Urie and Becki Newton, who play Marc and Amanda, Wilhelmina's gay assistant and the mildly sluttish receptionist, both of them for most of the season Betty's mortal enemies (though by end of season she was making headway with both of them as friends, in particular Marc, inspiring him to come out to his mother). There is also Henry, winningly played by Christopher Gorham. He had previously played the title role in JAKE 2.0, on which UGLY BETTY executive producer Silvio Horta also worked. I suspect his appearing on UGLY BETTY has something to do with that connection. Gorham is a very good-looking guy who is somehow able to pull off completely nerdy guys, in this show an accountant.

But there is more than just the office. There is Betty's home life. Veteran character actor Tony Plana plays Betty's illegal immigrant father (one of the subplots deals with his attempt to get a green card). He is one of these actors who has appeared in literally hundreds of TV shows and movies, but has rarely had an especially prominent role. You love to see fine actors who have paid their dues get a great role like this one. Ana Ortiz is hysterical as Betty's garish sister Hilda, but the person who steals nearly every scene in the Suarez household is twelve-year old Mark Indelicato, who plays Betty's nephew Justin. We don't know that Justin is gay, but his effeminate swagger, his deep love of stage musicals, and his encyclopedic knowledge of fashion marks him with all of the stereotypes.

This show is too smart to be a guilty pleasure, but it is just as much fun as one. It doesn't go on my list of my absolute favorite shows. It isn't as sophisticated or as intelligent as FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, as engrossing as LOST, a fist-in-the-gut like DEXTER or THE WIRE, or as original or jaw-droppingly brilliant as BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, but sometimes you just aren't in the mood for something as heavy as these shows. Sometimes you just want to have a good time and relax. I promise there are few shows on television more perfect for that than this.

4 out of 5 stars NOT too ugly.......2007-05-10

America Ferrera (who made people's 100 most beautiful list) is fantastic as Betty. It's a cheesy and fun show. It is just as good as the original novella version my grandma watches. It's not the West Wing or anything, but it's a cute quirky show.

Sergio Leone's trilogy of operatic spaghetti Westerns with Clint Eastwood made the former TV star into an international sensation as the scraggly, silent Man with No Name, a wandering rogue with a scheming mind and a sense of humor drier than the dusty, wind-scoured desert. With A Fistful of Dollars, a blatant rip-off of Kurosawa's cynical samurai hit Yojimbo, Leone transforms the Western hero into a crafty mercenary. The follow-up, For a Few Dollars More, teams Eastwood up in an uneasy alliance with Lee Van Cleef in a tale of revenge, but the masterpiece of the set is The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, an epic scramble for buried gold set against the violence of the Civil War. In this film good is a relative term as three criminals make a series of tenuous partnerships broken in double-crosses and betrayals in Leone's epic vision of the American southwest as endless deserts and clapboard towns infested with gunmen. This was a new kind of Western: cynical, violent, stylish, and austere. Eastwood's rough face and squinting eyes fill the widescreen frame in massive close-ups while Leone stages action in bold compositions on empty streets and stark landscapes. The guns ring out in cartoonish exaggeration, and the music, an eclectic, electric mix of buzzing guitar, human voice, and harmonica by Ennio Morricone, sets the whole thing in a world pitched between myth and modernity. Leone's shot-in-Spain trilogy ushered in a flood of Italian spaghetti Westerns, but none hold a candle to Leone's stylish classics. --Sean Axmaker

2 out of 5 stars The Greatest Westerns Ever Made, But These DVDs have Shortcomings.......2007-05-05

My low rating does not apply to the movies themselves. In a period when most Hollywood westerns were becoming predictable and formulaic, Italian director Sergio Leone broke the mold! This trilogy, along with his last western, "Once Upon A Time In The West" (not included in this set), are the four greatest westerns ever made, and yet were not produced by Hollywood. The greatest of the Hollywood westerns, such as "The Big Country", "The Alamo", "The Three Godfathers", and south-of-the-border westerns like "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" and "Guns For San Sabastian" (to name but a few of the greats) all fall in behind the Leone westerns. If you are a fan of westerns and have not seen the movies in this trilogy, watch them as soon as possible, but be prepared for something different than you are used to. They are not slick, but instead portray an accurate grittiness of the old west. They are not gimmicky like the Hollywood westerns of more recent vintage (say from about the mid 1970's to present). The greatest western ever made has to be "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly". This is the mother of all westerns! The acting in all three movies is superb, but the performance of Eli Wallach as Tuco in "The Good..." is extraordinary, and ranks as one of the greatest performances by any actor on film. Clint Eastwood also gives the greatest performance of his career in "The Good...". It is interesting that Clint tried to recapture the magic of the Leone films in his own productions such as "Pale Rider", Hang 'Em Hign", etc., but never even came close.

Now on to the problems with these discs. The transfers are not particularly hign quality, and appear not to be remastered. The first two trilogy movies are merely letterboxed rather than enhanced widescreen. But the biggest bummer of all is the sound quality. The sound quality on "The Good..." is about as good as any of the versions I have heard. The sound quality of "Fistful..." is rather poor. But it is the obnoxious sound of "for A Few Dollars More" that is really a crime. The dialog is too far in the background, and the overall sound on this disc is so harsh that if you turn the volume up to a level where you can hear the dialog clearly, the hard, treble-heavy, distorted sound will bore a hole in your head! I'm not kidding. I love these movies so much that I will have to find an alternative version of "For a Few Dollars More" to replace the one that came with this trilogy. If I had it to do over again, I would purchase the best individual versions I could find, rather than waste money of this set. It's too bad that MGM didn't put just a little bit more TLC into these masterpieces!

5 out of 5 stars Clint Eastwood - the Man with No Name Trilogy DVD collection.......2007-04-12

A Must have for all Clint Eastwood's classic spaghetti western fans.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-03-29

have you ever seen those movies, no ?? you have to do it

4 out of 5 stars Good old westerns.......2007-02-23

This trilogy is a necessity for all Clint Eastwood fans. These are the good westerns. I bought them for my husband, and he watched all of them, forgetting to do his chores. His only complaint was that he missed seeing them in the low-quality, scratchy, uncolorful versions he used to see when the movies were on TV!

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-01-30

Great movies. If you don't own them, you should. Fistful of Dollars is my favorite out of the three but Good Bad and the Ugly is still amazing. If you are a real Clint fan or Spaggette Western fan you should add this to your collection.

When a Great Dane puppy is raised with a litter of Dachshunds, it naturally thinks it's a Dachshund too--even when it grows to 10 times the size. Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette star as the hapless couple who took in the galumphing dog, which wreaks havoc on their house and home. The Ugly Dachshund is mostly a series of spectacular disasters (the doggy demolition of Jones's art studio will delight kids and reduce adults to nervous wrecks), but it's held together by the convincing domestic banter of Jones and Pleshette (who was quite a dish in 1965); the pair went on to star in a couple of other Disney live-action flicks, Bluebeard's Ghost and The Shaggy D.A.. Despite some racial and gender stereotypes, it's a good-natured and amusing movie in the Disney mold. Also featuring classic character actor Charlie Ruggles (Bringing Up Baby, The Parent Trap). --Bret Fetzer

Description

There's magic in the memories as great Disney moments are captured right here for you and your family to enjoy. You don't have to own a pet to enjoy this story of a happy suburban household gone to the dogs! The Garrisons (Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette) are the "proud parents" of three adorable dachshund pups -- and one overgrown Great Dane named Brutus, who nevertheless thinks of himself as a dainty dachsie. His identity crisis results in an uproarious series of household crises that reduce the Garrisons' house to shambles -- and viewers to howls of laughter!

5 out of 5 stars Such a cute movie!.......2007-07-05

Dean Jones makes the best Disney movies. His character always ends up in some kind of competition with a female. He always loses! ;P His wife has these annoying puppies so Jones gets himself a great dane in which all heck breaks lose and brings the comedy full of laughter. You will have to watch to see how it ends!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Movie!.......2007-05-28

A friend of mine from the office told me about this movie knowing I have a Great Dane of my own. I purchased it and watched it the day it came in the mail! It's such a great movie and truly reflects the life of a Great Dane owner! I give it five stars. :)

Clint Eastwood (the Man with No Name) is good, Lee Van Cleef (Angel Eyes Sentenza) is bad, and Eli Wallach (Tuco Benedito Pacifico Juan Maria Ramirez) is ugly in the final chapter of Sergio Leone's trilogy of spaghetti westerns (the first two were A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More). In this sweeping film, the characters form treacherous alliances in a ruthless quest for Confederate gold. Leone is sometimes underrated as a director, but the excellent resolution on this digital video disc should enhance appreciation of his considerable photographic talent and gorgeous widescreen compositions. Ennio Morricone's jokey score is justifiably famous.

Description

By far the most ambitious, unflinchingly graphic and stylistically influential western ever mounted, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is an engrossing actioner shot through with a volatile mix of myth and realism. Clint Eastwood returns as the "Man With No Name," this time teaming with two gunslingers (Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef) to pursue a cache of $200,000and letting no one, not even warring factions in a civil war, stand in their way. From sun-drenched panoramas to bold, hard close-ups, exceptional camera work captures the beauty and cruelty of the barren landscape andthe hardened characters who stride unwaveringly through it. Forging a vibrant and yet detached style of action that had not been seen before, and has never been matched since, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly shatters the western mold in true Clint Eastwood style.

5 out of 5 stars TODO UN WESTERN!!.......2007-07-06

5 out of 5 stars Second best Sergio Leone western???.......2007-05-20

After watching the G,B and U, I knew I had seen the best western ever. Which is saying a lot since I was a western flick junkie and saw all the westerns ever shown on tv and in the theaters.

Then came Once Upon A Time in the West.
Sergio Leone's directing and photography and Ennio Morricone's music had gone from wonderful to magnificent. The storyline was mysterious with the Man with the Harmonica's (Charles Bronson) denouement into a stunning climax with a flashback to him as a boy holding his brother with a noose around his neck,on his shoulders, and the totally evil Henry Fonda sticking a harmonica in his mouth just before Bronson collapses, hanging his brother. Then Fonda's final realization who Bronson is, but to late to avoid his own death.

This flick had a great opening scene with 3 of Fonda's henchmen waiting for Bronson at the train station. Bronson asks where is his horse, and Jack Elam replies: "Guess we are shy one horse". Bronson's reply: "No you brought two too many!" Then the rapid shooting leaving the 3 bad guys dead.

There are many scenes and characters like the opening which transcend the previous HOllywoodized westerns. You feel the dirt and dusty west and you hear it, even the smallest sounds punctuate the scene. The heroes are a bandit (Jason Robard), a previous prostitute (Claudia Cardinale), and the mysterious man with a harmonica and of few words who kills people trying to kill Fonda, saving him for the climax (Charles Bronson). And the most evil Henry Fonda, slaughtering an entire family including the small boy because his cohort says his name.

I truly believe Leone and Morricone designed and created their final western masterpiece with ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST and my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars The Spaghetti Western at it's very best.......2007-05-13

Sergio Leone concludes his "Man With No Name" trilogy with this classic spaghetti western that is a very important mile stone in the evolution of the western movie. By far the most ambitious of the three movies, "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" has Blondie (Clint Eastwood, the good), Angel Eyes (Lee Van Cleef, the bad) and Tuco (Eli Wallach, the ugly) all competing for a fortune in American Confederate gold during the American Civil War.

The film is a masterpiece in film making. It has an European art house style that most then contemporary western fans probably were not used to, so that accounted for it's wild visual style. For example there is crazy camera angles and spinning around at lightning speed making audiences sick from vertigo, which matches the characters frenzied state of mind at the moment.

Clint Eastwood returns as the man with no name, but it would seem to be out of order from the first two films, as he gets his distinctive costume in this film; but that is neither here nor there. Here is he is just as greedy as the others, and his 'good' honor is relative to the other two characters. Tuco is by far the most fun character of the film. While he is the comic relief he is also a lot smarter and tougher, and more complex than most people assume at first; most of his enemies underestimate him, and he is able to take advantage of that. Though both characters are played by Cleef, Angel Eyes is not Colonel Mortimer of "For a Few Dollars More"; here he is ice cold and totally ruthless with no conscience or remorse.

I liked this film for several reasons, mostly all the characters are bad guys, and you have to judge them by the degree they are evil. If there is one flaw it is it's over kill of dragging out the shoot outs, especially the Mexican standoff at the end, also several of the key scenes (i.e. the trip through the desert, the stay at the Union Army prison camp, and the final shoot out) were so long and seriously needed some editing. But all in all, a classic well deserving of it's reputation. I wish there was a 4 1/2 star setting, that is what I think it really deserves, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt for it's cultural impact.

5 out of 5 stars A classic, and a great one.......2007-05-07

You cannot watch westerns without watching The good the bad and the ugly
Simple as that, this movie rocks :-)

5 out of 5 stars this gunman with no name trilogy is immortal.......2007-04-06

what a treat in lifetime that you could see these great westerns like these trilogy? do i still have to write a long review?

As a producer, Jerry Bruckheimer makes movies for guys, mostly action films like Top Gun and Gone in 60 Seconds. The ones he makes that feature women, such as Flashdance and now Coyote Ugly, broaden their appeal with a fondness for "strong women." For Bruckheimer, that means self-determined, attractive women who don't need men to get what they want. Is there anything sexier than that? In Coyote Ugly, the charming young waif Piper Perabo stars as Violet, a New Jersey waitress who moves to New York to make it big as a songwriter. She has absolutely no idea how the music business works, relying instead on her faith in her own abilities. In order to make ends meet, she gets a job in a bar called Coyote Ugly, where the bartenders are scantily clad women who dance on the bar and order around their mostly male clientele. Really, they are strippers who don't have to take off their clothes. In fact, the owner (Maria Bello) orders them to enact the first rule of strip clubs: "Appear available but never be available." Bruckheimer is smart enough to focus on the naive girl instead of the seamier side of the story, following her as she realizes her dream and picks up a disposable but nice man along the way. Further "empowering" the female figures in the film, Zoe (Tyra Banks), the bartender whom Violet is replacing, leaves in order to go to law school. See? They're as smart as they are sexy! Then there's John Goodman, who turns in an absolutely charming performance as Violet's concerned father. This is a sweet and inoffensive film as long as you don't think too much about it. --Andy Spletzer

5 out of 5 stars The top bar in New York.......2007-06-22

Five girls work it, Vi sings there every night. Almost everything happens.
Guys are autioned off. Funny movie!

4 out of 5 stars love it or hate it.......2007-02-06

This film is a must-see. With gorgeous women for the lads, and an upbeat girl-power can-do message for the girls, you cannot fail to enjoy this movie.

A pumping soundtrack and brilliant choreography make you want to start dancing on the Coyote Ugly bar with the stars. Unknown Piper Perabo is obviously destined for great things (think younger Sarah Jessica Parker) and Adam Garcia is well sexy as the prime australian rib she auctions off. Tyra Banks makes an appearance and Maria Bello gets her arguably most important role to date.

The message behind this movie goes something like: "life may suck at times, but it can be fun if it sucks with the right people". This is the film for all the underpaid, under-appreciated gophers of society. We do what we have to to get by and Coyote Ugly shows that all of us can make it.

4 out of 5 stars Coyote Ugly (Unrated Special Edition).......2007-01-21

Just a warning that the unrated version includes nudity and a sex scene not shown on the rated release. So don't buy it for a kid who loves the music and dancing. The adults, on the other hand, will be happy.

1 out of 5 stars Fluffy, contrived crud........2006-11-20

I'm not sure which is worse- the concept of the bar "Coyote Ugly." or the movie about it. I suppose both. A lot is made about Piper Parabo's performance, as it were. But I just don't see it. I mean, you'd have to be able to act to receive such an accolade. And in this movie, Parabo is a strident, sell a little T and A as far as one can w/o becoming a stripper, with as much a grasp on the real world as 3rd grader. The movie is a toy for high school/college age mopes who find places where the worst kept secret in the bar business- hiring hotties to sucker young, naiive men into spending money they can't afford- interesting places to hang out at. This is "Cocktail" in reverse, to an extent. This is one of those movies that creates a non-existing, pure utopia of a bar. The place where everyone basically laughs, cheers and sings in unison at a contrived, silly atmosphere that only exists in the minds of Hollywood execs, and college campuses to a much lesser extent. The dialogue to is equal to that of "Coctail"- pointless, been there before, dense dialogue. If you're young and have yet to be in touch with real life, see this. It's a fantasy flick for escapism. If you're a quality film lover, run the other way!

3 out of 5 stars Something for the girls, something for the guys.......2006-07-25

You don't often get movies with typical "chick flick" plots that also pander to guys with hot girls strutting around showing off their body. Coyote Ugly does it, and does a decent job of pulling it off. It's not a great film, but it's worth a viewing with your boy/girlfriend, whatever the case may be. The unrated version unfortunately spoils the balance a bit by throwing in bits of nudity. Do you really want that in a sugary date flick? Probably not. Stick to the theatrical cut, and you might find yourself humming "Can't Fight the Moonlight" as well.

***** Five Stars for the cartoons themselves! I give the low *** three start rating because WE ALREADY HAVE THEM ON DVD!

This collection is a cheaply put-together, un restored, re-release of cartoons from the DISNEY TREASURES TINS! THESE ARE NOT FROM THE SAME MASTERS! So why buy something you already have?

    1) THE UGLY DUCKLING (1939) also on the "Disney Treasures: Silly Symphonies" DVD release.

    2) COUNTRY COUSIN (1936) also on the "Disney Treasures: Silly Symphonies" DVD release.

    3) FERDINAND THE BULL (1938) also on the "Disney Treasures: Rarities" DVD release.

    4) WIND IN THE WILLOWS (1949) segement from the feature Icabod & Mr. Toad. Amazon sells the entire feature for just $15.99

With the Disney Treasures DVD releases on limited availability, I guess Disney hopes those who missed out will buy these 4-cartoon discs. The low price is misleading, when you break it down to individual cartoon cost this release is EXPENSIVE!

    And no extras!

5 out of 5 stars Cartoons on Disney's Timeless Tales, Volume Two.......2005-07-31

This DVD includes The Country Cousin (1936), Ferdinand the Bull (1938), The Ugly Duckling (1939) and The Wind in The Willows (1949). The Wind in The Willows was the first of the two animated sequences that are formed together to make The Adventures Of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949).

If you think of A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More as the tasty appetizers in Sergio Leone's celebrated "Dollars" trilogy of Italian "Spaghetti" Westerns, then The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is a lavish full-course feast. Readily identified by the popular themes of its innovative score by Ennio Morricone (one of the bestselling soundtracks of all time), this cinematic milestone eclipsed its influential predecessors with a $1.2 million budget (considered extravagant in the mid-1960s), greater production values to accommodate Leone's epic vision of greed and betrayal, and a three-hour running time for its wide-ranging plot about the titular trio of mercenaries ("Good" Blondie played by rising star Clint Eastwood, "Bad" Angel Eyes played by Lee Van Cleef, and "Ugly" Tuco played by Eli Wallach) in a ruthless Civil War-era quest for $200,000 worth of buried Confederate gold. Virtually all of Leone's stylistic attributes can be found here in full fruition, from the constant inclusion of Roman Catholic iconography to a climactic circular shoot-out, along with Leone's trademark use of surreal landscapes, brilliant widescreen compositions and extreme close-ups of actors so intimate that they burn into the viewer's memory. And while some Leone fans may favor the more scaled-down action of For a Few Dollars More or the masterful grandiosity of Once Upon a Time in the West, it was The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly that cemented Leone's reputation as a world-class director with a singular vision. --Jeff Shannon

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.......2007-06-28

Widely considered the best of Leone's western trilogy, "Good" has also been re-mastered to pristine glory, some footage re-inserted, and lines re-dubbed by Eastwood and Wallach. Yes, the film is long, but the three stars, Leone's magic camera, and that Morricone score will hold you hostage throughout. Wallach steals it as Tuco. A spaghetti western worth its weight in gold.
