4 out of 5 stars Highly underrated.......2007-02-23

I remember seeing Trancers on cable back in the mid-eighties. This film, although a very cheap B-movie, has got so much style that you can't help but love it. Obviously, the movie "borrows" much of its style and visuals from Blade Runner as well as the characterization of the protagonist, Jack Deth, but even so, Tim Thomerson's performance, a brilliant soundtrack, and a VERY original plot and story line combine to make Trancers a cult classic. The sequels never quite measured up to the original (which is usually the case), so the first film alone is worthy of any DVD collection. Aside from occasional foul language and "suggestive" sex scenes (no nudity), the older kids might be able to enjoy this one with mom or dad who probably remember seeing this one back when they were teenagers.
Bottom line: if you like action films, you gotta see this one. If you like sci-fi films: you gotta see this one. If you like Tim Thomerson, you gotta see this film.
What are you waiting for?

3 out of 5 stars Trancers: great story, poor dvd.......2007-01-03

I love this story. I mean, after all, with a protagonist named Jack Death, what's not to love?

But the quality bites! The video is fuzzy and glary. What a disappointment.

3 out of 5 stars Guilty Pleasure.......2006-07-09

Well, maybe not too guilty about it, I do like Trancers. Tim Thomerson does a good job of playing the hard boiled, wise cracking detective. Trancers, like the many of the movies from New Moon were low budget, cheesy but very enjoyable to watch. Mr Thomerson did a good job in all of them.

4 out of 5 stars One of those movies..........2006-07-03

...that once you see it you can't seem to get it out of your head, even years later. Finally decided to get my own copy and it was just as much fun as when I saw it years ago. Notable for an early preformance of Helen Hunt.

5 out of 5 stars Trancer I review.......2006-03-24

If you like typical 80's schlock sci-fi, this movie is for you! I loved it when I saw it originally, and still do today! Who doesn't think Tim Thomerson is handsome with his greased-look 80's hair? Helen Hunt always has been one of my favorites also! I only wish the entire series was on DVD, but alas...it's not! Unless you liked it originally when it came out in the 80's you probably won't get it, but my gang liked all of Jack Deth's movies!

5 out of 5 stars You better hide because the big bad wolf is on the prowl.......2007-05-29

I adore werewolf books and movies gobbling up anything with the monstrum theme in it and I must say that this movie was excellent! I had the pleasure of watching it today for the second time and hours later it's still running though my mind so I had to put my two cents in and write about it. I would also like to mention that my favorite werewolf movie is Dog Soldiers, a movie that works because a main stream production company was not involved in the making of it, sparing it as a flick for kids and those who really only want eye candy.

Bad Moon is a sweet movie because it's quite short and the werewolf looks wicked! There is also a transformation scene, quite unusual but it really shows the whole deal, so that was nice to see for once. Short and to the point, the movie starts with an expedition gone wrong in Nepal. A whole scientific team gets shredded to pieces by a very vicious wolf like creature that gives Ted a big scratch before he defends himself with a gun, changing him forever. Back at the Pacific Northwest Ted reluctantly visits his sister Janet played by Mariel Hemingway and her ten year old son Brett. From the beginning the viewer can sense that she is on her own with the child, no man is taking care of them and their only furry companion and protects is Thor, an adorable yet stern German shepherd. The viewer gets an unsettling feeling that Ted is her brother but the experience in Nepal has left him with a changed heart. His keen senses and cold staring eyes betray hints of an animal kept deep inside as everyone is glad to see him except for the family dog. Now the dog is always present in this movie making it quite obvious that he is playing a big part. I was even joking to my boyfriend when we watched it that Thor was the main hero of the movie and we both ended up rooting for him not only because we love animals but because the werewolf and the dog were enemies form the start and the movie depicted the play on that perfectly.

As Thor follows Ted's every step he encounters a scary experience in the woods one night, witnessing his master's brother in his full fangs and claws get up and runs back home to warn the family. I wouldn't dare spoil the movie and what happens next but thrills and chills are on all the time. Plenty of hikers and people who wandered around for various reasons found themselves as a monster snack and it made Janet and Brett weary but they felt safe since her bother was there, well little did they know.... The werewolf made plenty of appearances and I must say, it was one of the best looking wolves I have ever seen. It made me think that if I lived in a house like Janet, two or three dogs would have to be a must, especially with a beast like this crawling around. I would probably rent a tank to kill it because I wouldn't want my dogs hurt but Thor was a great addition to the film and we were always worried about him as he couldn't resist following Ted and his secrets.

For the fans of the genre this is a sweet treat, and I know that a five star rating for this kind of a movie is hard to explain but I really get a good kick out of it when I see it and it's nearly flawless. This is not a multi million budgeted movie with latest CGI effects and that's why I like it. There is more madness than talking and hiding so I give it two thumbs up.

3 out of 5 stars Nice wolf, BAD end........2006-08-14

I have to admit the werewolf looked capital, and got some good screen time but... aparently cool looks aside being a werewolf grants a person LESS in the department of physical abilities than a normal muscular human.

I don't want to give away the ending but I have to include it in my werewolf hall of shame. It made me shake my head in sadness for all werewolves everywhere.

Overall though an ok werewolf movie. Three stars for the wolf alone.

4 out of 5 stars Bad Moon.......2006-07-31

If you're expecting to grab onto the edge of your seat, this won't be it for the jaded horror enthusiasts, but for the upper-tier novices, it's worth buying. The script and filming are good and start out with a fun legal "left-hook" to a door-to-door guy out to make a buck by suing someone if he has to, and it plays as a mini-drama-side-car to the main theme for a bit. The setting is out in the wilderness where a small family consisting of a woman, her son and the family dog (105 lb. German Shepard named Thor) resides. Thor plays a lead role moments later in the film as the caretaker to the family when he notices something is not quite right after he meets the woman's brother, who contacted them from a campsite not far from where they live after law enforcement came into his area in response to some campers found murdered. He moves near them, and an inner dialog begins to grow between the woman's brother and Thor, for the dog knows he recognizes his kin, and the struggle between family safety and kinship between all unfolds.

4 out of 5 stars A good werewolf movie........2006-07-14

If you're looking for a good werewolf movie, I recommend BAD MOON. This movie has a story different from most. If you want alot of killing, this movie is not for you. I give it 4 stars because of the unnecessary sex scene at the beginning to gain a R rating. Otherwise it would of been good date movie for teens.

2 out of 5 stars This movie ruined my life.......2006-07-07

Bad Moon begins in some South American country where Michael Pare and his girlfriend are attacked by a werewolf. The movie stumbles quickly into the perspective of Thor, a wonderfully loyal german shepherd owned by Mariel Hemingway (Whom I tend to think is kind of scary looking with her weird cheekbones and her sunken eyes) and her son (the little boy who played Dennis the Menace). Michael Pare, who is Mariel's brother, soon comes into the picture, struggling to come to grips with the attack and his living a life as a werewolf. At first, you feel pity for his character...I mean, the guy witnessed his lover attacked and eaten by a monster and is now himself living the life of the beast...but, you soon feel nothing but disgust and hatred towards the man when he decides to have a mental battle with Thor. The movie was scary and tense in parts and the gore factor was high , but I had such a hard time with some scenes in the film. I was VERY disturbed by the scene where Michael Pare's character entices Thor to bite him, therefore getting Thor hauled off by Animal control people in a truly heartwrenching scene that still to this day makes me sick. The movie is good in some aspects, The directing is good and you truly fear for the people in the situations they are in. The Creature effects are excellent and I much rather prefer costume/physical makeup werewolves over the newer, Van Helsing type Werewolf that CGI designs have come up with. There is NOTHING worse than a computer animated werewolf, just watch the movie CURSED to see what I mean. This movie, to me, is all about watching a poor territorial dog who wants to protect his owners, get pushed around. The CGI in this movie was awful just because it was 1996 and CGI was pretty much new to movies at that time, so the transformation scene in the end was a crapfest. The hero of the movie, Thor, is what I am giving this movie 2 stars for, because the dog really does pull through for the viewer and make them care. You kind of watch the movie only for the dog. You want the dog to live and get through it-and almost could care less about the family by the end of the film. Overall, the movie was scary and the werewolf was pretty good compared to some of the crap that has been out there in the past, but the dog getting knocked around and tortured throughout the movie was enough to ruin my life forever. At least the ending was somewhat happy....I was somewhat confused by the dream she had-but it seems to end with everything alright. Oh well, the movie was decent but could have been longer and could have had less traumatic incidents involving the dog.

1 out of 5 stars where's the SEX !?!.......2006-09-22

They cut the sex scenes out and used (repetitively) the same scenes of the girls dancing , clothed, to fill the spots where the sex scenes would be. What the hell? Why can they show movies like this on cable unedited but when they re-release it... they screw it up with cheesy editing. THAT IS THE ONLY REASON FOR BUYING THIS MOVIE AND IT'S NOT THERE IN THIS VERSION... DO NOT BUY.

It's ok because finally they release the dvd after all these years...............but it's the unrated version! Many of the best scenes were cut so you miss a lot.........(Ex: Banana scene, you know what i'm talking about). I'm dissapointed for this

2 out of 5 stars Moon Convicts Are Totally Rude.......2007-07-06

What were they thinking? I like Michael Pare, but I haven't seen him in awhile. Is this movie the reason? Okay I'm a big fan of SciFi, but something is missing here. The effects are pretty good in parts, and pretty bad in others. Some of the stuff looks like it could have been used in "Alien", and others look like plastic diorama models hung in a kids bedroom on a string. The acting is a bit disappointing but passable, but the dialogue is what hurts this movie the most. I think with a decent screenwriter this movie would have made a good showing despite the special effects and any other flaws in my humble opinion.

When Pare is sent to Moon 44 as an undercover agent, he is unaware the corporation he is working for doesn't care about the humans dying on the other moons that have been attacked and destroyed. They only care about their shuttles used for mining. They are so hard up for pilots they use convicts to pilot helicopter fighters to protect the moon. They are teamed with kids at the base in order to be guided through foggy ravines with rock columns. Kids are brutalized by convicts, shuttles are stolen by internal management, robot fighters kill all moons in their path, but Pare is there to save the day. Can he save this movie? No, but it isn't his fault.

4 out of 5 stars Great back-story. So-so main story. .......2006-03-10

We have a very mixed bag here. On the one end you have a poorly executed plot rife with clichés and stereotypes. On the other hand you get an excellent back-story that far outshines the main one. Moon 44 is not your average B-movie fare. You get an interesting mix of good and bad that ultimately makes the movie worth watching… if you keep in mind certain things.

The first thing you need to keep in mind is the main plot can almost be completely discarded. It’s way too stereotypical and ultimately does nothing but give the good guys a reason to chase the bad guys and the bad guys a reason to be bad. This, more than anything else, makes Moon 44 no better than any other B-movie. Now that you have this in mind you can pave the way to see the excellent background story developing here. There are a couple of little sub-plots that really make the script shine. For instance there is a conflict between the pilot/convicts and their youthful navigators. This kind of storytelling makes for great drama and this is what’s pulled off perfectly. Other little things are going on in the back-story as well like the rivalry that turns into respect between Stone (Michael Pare) and one of the pilots Jake O’Neal (Brian Thompson) as well as several other tidbits. The great background characters and storylines are what save this movie from being just another clichéd B-Film.

The acting is also a mixed bag. Michael Pare doesn’t bring anything different to the table here with his tough-guy special operative role and Malcolm McDowell’s performance didn’t really give anything fresh to the movie either. I can’t really blame Pare and McDowell too much as their roles are a victim of a canned script. Dean Devlin however gives a brilliant performance as Tyler, the good-natured navigator who comes to terms with hard realities. I always enjoy seeing Brian Thompson in a film and I believe he is often an underrated talent. Other notable performances come from Leon Rippy and a quirky yet heartfelt performance by Stephen Geoffreys. As far as the rest of the supporting cast you do get some great performances. Overall the acting is quite good, save for a few standard performances

The sets look like this movie comes out of the Alien universe, which means they look cool and functional. You don’t get many dark and eerie Sci-Fi sets like that those anymore. The design for the gun ships is pretty cool even though they are still just helicopters. The robot attackers look cool, but you would think they would have had robot ships and not robots flying ships. I guess you can explain that away for various reasons, but it still sits odd with me. The special effects are serviceable considering this is a low budget movie. Probably the model work will be the thing that is most evident of a limited budget. Still I prefer to take all things into account and can easily forgive the limitations as the model work still looks reasonably realistic, and compared to other B-movies it’s downright excellent.

Moon 44 is a B-Movie. No doubt about it. However it’s one of the better B-Movies out there. If it wasn’t for the weak main plot and script that followed it you would have a truly great movie. As it stands the film is saved by very strong character development, great acting, well executed sub-plots, and better than average special effects. You will get a good movie if you can get past the main storyline, which isn’t too hard, as it seems to only be there to move events forward. If you’re just out for flashy effects and lots of action then I suppose you won’t find this movie as interesting as I did. For those of you driven by story and character development I say with Moon 44 you will find a diamond in the rough.

3 out of 5 stars I'll Take This "B" Movie Over A Coma Anyday.......2005-09-19

I've seen hundreds of Sci Fi movies over the years. This is one of those you'll wonder whether you've watched it or not a few years down the road. You just can't remember.

All in all, I figure it's still better to watch a so-so Sci Fi movie than "Dances With Wolves" or "Evita". This movie will end up being non-memorable, but it's preferable to being in a coma.

5 out of 5 stars moon 44 "EXCELLENT"!!!!!!!!!.......2005-08-31

THIS IS MOVIE IS A MUST SEE FOR ANY SCI-FICTION FAN,THE STORY IS GOOD,THE SPECIAL EFFECTS ARE GREAT,THEY DID IT THE OLD FASHIONED WAY, WITH MODELS, REAL EXPLOSIONS,HAND BLUIT MINIATURE LANDSCAPES,AND IT ALL LOOKS GREAT!. THE CAST IS ALSO PRETTY GOOD, YOU HAVE MALCOLM MCDOWELL AND MICHAEL PARE, THEY BOTH GIVE A DECENT PREFORMANCE IN THIS MOVIE,BUT?, ANYONE WHO WENT TOO THIS MOVIE WAS THERE TO SEE THE VERY NEET ATTACK HELICOPTERS. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT LITTLE MOVIE,WHICH DID SHOW IN A LOT OF MAJOR THEATRES IN (1989),AT THE VERY LEAST, THIS MOVIE IS WAY,WAY BETTER THAN ROLAND EMMERICH'S "GODAWFUL GODZILLA " MOVIE ,WHICH WAS A VERY, VERY ,BAD MOVIE!,INDEED.

3 out of 5 stars Early effort from director of ID4, Stargate, and others..........2004-02-13

I first saw this film in 1991, after exhausting the sci-fi section at my local Blockbuster. A straight-to-video release (as I recall) I thought it a decent outer-space adventure. Grim, gritty, raw, it tries to be a combination of several genres: space opera, hardboiled detective novel, war movie. It succeeds at none of these, but taken as a whole is enjoyable weekend popcorn fare. Pare does a good job as our disaffected intellectual tough-guy hero, while other B and C list names show up for decent turns. Leon Rippy especially is fun as the failed, proud, bull-dogged Sergeant Sykes, while Malcom McDowell appears as the military commander whom you just know in your heart is up to no good, right from the start. Because, hey, it's Malcolm McDowell! Roscoe Lee Browne is also worth mentioning as the slick, coniving corporate boss. The special effects are of the limited-budget variety, and it's a shame Emmerich didn't have access to either CGI, or more money, as he has in later, better-known movies. But I think this movie is worth watching, and even owning, if you want to see solid early work from a director who has since tackled some of the highest-profile and biggest profit-reaping films in the industry.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific And Very Funny Chinese Horror-Comedy!.......2007-04-23

I wish there were more films like this one. It's great to see parody in any genre. Moreover, it is necessary at times. Which leads us to this unique film "Mr. Vampire." Having first seen the film many years ago [release date around 1986], I originally owned an import VHS copy which was pretty choppy and bad to say the least. I was happy when the DVD was released and grabbed it up right away. That's how much I like this film. The film has action, horror and comedy. Those who are into Martial Arts films, however, may not find the film as much action-based as you might like. But it does deliver as a fun parody of Martial Arts action. Nevertheless, I did like the fight sequences and acting, and the film succeeds exceptionally well as a very funny film. Which is one of the reasons I bought the film initially anyway. This is a funny delight of cinema from Hong Kong, and I would recommend to viewers to check it out.

I don't wish to give away too much of the film, therefore, I will leave out some of the funnier sequences from this review. However, I will write that the film centers on one Master Gau (Ching-Ying Lam) and his two assistants Chou (Siu-hou Chin) and Man Choi (Ricky Hui). Master Gau is in the business of controlling vampires. Both he and his assistants [bumbling ones at that] are in for one funny romp. They are trying to cope with the rewawakened corpse of a man. However, things backfire, and the viewer is in for one exceptionally funny horror-comedy. In trying to deal with the very strong 'hopping vampires' the film progresses through a maze of slapstick comedy [But in a very good way] as it spoofs Kung Fu and gives a delightfully comedic twist to the horror genre. Also, Chinese bureaucracy and the police are dealt with in a funny and lampooning way.

Yes, there are silly parts in the film, but it's done in a hysterically funny way, and that's what makes this film so funny. Also, while garlic is the recipe in the West for combating Vampires: English and American films in particular, in China--it's sticky rice. I really like this film. It delivers in every way that one will find entertaining. With Master Gau up to his elbows in trying to help his two assistant's Man Choi and Chou from falling prey to the vampire curse they now battle, he also finds himself up against one tough super powerful vampire. Not at all like what we see in the vampires flicks here in the West. This is a great and entertaining film. I recommend the film highly. I enjoyed the film immensely, and still do. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Temporarily Hold Your Breath.......2007-03-16

Don't let the title mislead you. The film title should have been translated as Mr. Zoombie instead of Mr. Vampire as these hopping ghosts are what we called zoombie. When the film was first released in the 80's, it was titled as Temporarily Stop Your Breathing. It was an enormous hit throughout Asia. 2 or 3 sequels were made afterwards. It also created a zoombie sensation in Japan. Among the Chinese zoombie movie, this one stood out the most as it succeeded in all three genres that it tried to achieve: action, comedy and horror.

Mr. Vampire, along with Chinese Ghost Story 1, is among my favorite films from the 80's.

Hop, hop and hop.

4 out of 5 stars Sticky rice!.......2006-07-19

"Mr. Vampire" is a movie for people tired of angsty, gorgeous vampires with thick Transylvanian accents.

Instead, this hilarious supernatural comedy has a different kind of vampire -- the superstrong, zombielike "hopping vampire." And dealing with the hopping vampires are a long-suffering Taoist priest and his bumbling assistants, who add all sorts of wacky twists.

Master Gau (Ching-Ying Lam) agrees to help the wealthy Yam family move their patriarch's body -- until he sees the undecayed body. Turns out Grandpa is a vampire. And after his bumbling assistants fail to properly restrain the vampire, it gets loose, kills its son, and now the vampire hunters are facing TWO vampires instead of one.

To make matters worse, Man Choi (Ricky Hui) has been infected with vampire toxin, which will turn him into a vampire if they can't cure him with sticky rice, and Chou (Siu-hou Chin) is being seduced at night by a ghost. Master Gau must cure one, save the other, and somehow destroy a superpowerful vampire that invades the Yam household.

"Mr. Vampire" was such a success in China that it started a whole trend of "hopping vampire" movies. But as with most trends, the original is still the best and more entertaining example. And it incorporates traditional vampires and succubi from China, as well as little-known mythical trivia (such as sticky rice being the "garlic" for a Chinese vampire).

Expect lots of Peter Jacksonish twisted humor (Man Choi having his fangs filed down) alongside the more typical kind (Chou and Man Choi cast a spell to make their romantic rival strip in public). But when the vampires show up, there are plenty of wild, undignified action scenes. And lots of property damage -- they break every piece of furniture they come across.

The late Ching-Ying Lam became a star thanks to this movie, and his staid, unibrowed priest is a likable guy when you consider everything he has to deal with. Hui and Chin are hysterical as a pair of earnest but hormonal guys. They're kind of an annoyance when Gau isn't actually fighting vampires, but perhaps they're good for doing errands.

(Fortunately they also cleaned up the subtitling on this movie. The original subtitling was comically bad, but the new ones are are very well done)

"Mr Vampire" is one of China's better supernatural comedies, with weird vampires and lots of sticky rice. Hysterical and warped.

5 out of 5 stars A classic film of undead martial arts tomfoolery.......2006-02-27

Very good.

The performances are excellent, and the broad humor is genuinely amusing. There's also a heck of a weird story with hopping vampires and a ghost lover. The Asian sensibility of these elements is what pushes this into the forefront. These are not Bram Stoker's undead, and even the ghost is much more physical than you'd ever see in an American film. And she can even shoot off her head, which is pretty damn neat.

This is an excellent movie for anyone looking for monsters, martial arts, and a healthy dose of humor. Can't recommend it enough. So see it already.

Where do I begin. Let's start with the sound quality. If your listening through headphones, don't bother using the left earcup, there's nothing there. The right cup is filled with overpowering analog hiss. I could barely hear the dialog. It's not letterboxed or widescreened, it's full screened, or rather left hand justified. If there is any action where the camera has to move quickly to follow it (and there is), the pixils rudely take over. What a mess. If you're a hardcore Caan fan, perhaps you'll suffer through this. The majority of the movie is narrated by some 35 year old woman attempting an 89 yr. old voice. How does it end? I don't know. At around 23 minutes, my DVD crapped out and my player was audibly struggling to find a track. The only difference between this DVD and my DVD of "Boy in the plastic bubble" is "Bubble" at least played till the end. I just started a new catagory on my DVD shelf. The trash can right next to it.

5 out of 5 stars Chinese ghost tale keeps things hopping.......2005-09-23

Sifu, the One Eyebrow Priest, needs all his skill to vanquish a powerful "hopping ghost"(like Hsien-Ko in "Darkstalkers," but more vicious) without much help from his two likeable, less-than-bright pupils. A bite from this creature will turn the bitten one into another vampire-zombie-ghost. Quick, get the sticky rice!

1 out of 5 stars I almost feel like giving this 2 stars for how amazingly bad it was.......2006-07-04

Lo Lieh apparently directed this adn I really can't believe that. Teh guy just has to much respect for himself to do that. He is certainly in it, but NO WAY he was behind the helm of this. It is a movie about a guy who isn't supposed to use his deadly fists any more. so then he pulls out the hands in front of the face ala Five Fingers of Death but then a couple seconds later, you are watching some movie that takes place in mexico and the fighting is only gonna get worse as teh movie goes on:(

So I watched the final fight and it is so weird and stupid, and yet almost good, it has to be seen to be believed.

I have this in the bretwood 10-pack, "Tough Guys of Kung Fu".
Picture quality is just fine, wish the movie was.
