George Romero's 1978 follow-up to his classic Night of the Living Dead is quite terrifying and gory (those zombies do like the taste of living flesh). But in its own way, it is just as comically satiric as the first film in its take on contemporary values. This time, we follow the fortunes of four people who lock themselves inside a shopping mall to get away from the marauding dead and who then immerse themselves in unabashed consumerism, taking what they want from an array of clothing and jewelry shops, making gourmet meals, etc. It is Romero's take on Louis XVI in the modern world: keep the starving masses at bay and crank up the insulated indulgence. Still, this is a horror film when all is said and done, and even some of Romero's best visual jokes (a Hare Krishna turned blue-skinned zombie) can make you sweat. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars George A. Romero's original Dawn of the Dead.......2007-07-03

Romero's ghastly sequel to his legendary "Night of the Living Dead" is equally brilliant and perhaps even more unsettling than the first installment. It is also spine-chillingly funny, making blunt comparisons between the dead-eyed, gore-loving zombies and vapid American consumers. (Next time you're at a mall, the impression will be hard to shake.) But for all its satirical wit, "Dead" also features riveting action sequences, culminating in the final showdown involving soldiers, bikers, and endless waves of the undead. Tom Savani's ghoulish effects are not for the faint of heart, so be sure you're in the mood for explicit slaughter.

4 out of 5 stars The best, deepest, richest horror movie ever.......2007-06-23

I wasn't going to write about this movie, because I'm not sure that I really have anything to say about it that hasn't been said by 40 million other people. But as I was creating this site I noticed that nearly every horror review I wrote mentioned it in some way, and I thought I should make some comment on it. I also realized that I would then have to update the links on all those horror reviews. Drat!

The movie opens with chaos at a television station. A talk show is being interrupted as the cameramen and studio people shout at the man being interviewed. This scene, while cleverly delivering crucial exposition, also effectively conveys the panic and disorder overtaking society. There is just something that says "society is falling apart" about a television show, normally so scripted and controlled, devolving into chaos, and behind-the-camera people, whose entire profession depends on being quiet and staying off camera, shouting and disrupting a broadcast.

Even this scene abounds in small details that seem disturbingly true-to-life and while also helping to fill in the backdrop of the world this film is positing. The station manager is broadcasting the locations of rescue stations that he knows have closed, likely sending people to their deaths, because he wants to be seen as purveying hope. One of the cameramen says to Francine [Gaylen Ross] that she should go ahead and leave. He just stands there calmly, and one wonders: why has he given up on himself so easily?

The movie then switches to a housing project overrun with zombies. It begins to focus on a prejudiced cop who is beginning to lose his grip in the face of the rising zombie threat. This sequence is poignant in showing a man who is trying use his own prejudices about another racial group as a way of holding on to reality! Strange, unsettling, but also uncomfortably true-to-life.

You'll just have to get used to the fact that this is all happening accompanied by significant gore.

The four main characters soon assemble in their helicopter and take off. Their aerial perspective allows the film to serve up a lot of exposition about the general state of the country as the zombies take over. In this case we have a bunch of rural folk who seem to be treating the entire thing as some sort of hunting party, having a picnic, kids running around, passing around drinks, and occasionally stopping to shoot a zombie. They are soon joined by a bunch of jovial National Guard folks who essentially do the same. These scenes, including the ones in the television station and housing project, go very far to establish the different ways that the country is responding to the crisis. Compare this to Zack Snyder's 2004 remake, which stayed in the perspective of the main characters from the start and never wavered, thus losing the wider context of the world the main characters are struggling to survive in.

After a brief interlude at a fueling station, our quartet arrive at the shopping mall. Quickly realizing that they could hole up here for a nearly indefinite amount of time in relative safety, they decide to stay. There are a number of survival tableaus and schemes in which the characters essentially "shop," but what interests me most here is the character development.

As they fight zombies to furnish their home in the upper floors of the mall, certain tensions between the characters develop. Stephen [David Enmgee], the helicopter pilot, seems to be jealous that he isn't as cool as the other two guys, and wants to be able to use guns and be cool like them. Scotty [Scott Reiniger] eventually becomes a bit of a daredevil, wanting to show off his skills, which leads him to make some rash decisions that put himself and others in danger. Near the end he becomes more and more mentally unstable and unable to recognize how hyped-up and volatile he is. Meanwhile, Peter [Ken Foree] stays collected, while Francine [Gaylen Ross] slowly becomes more focused and able to handle and protect herself. Romero's zombie movies have always had the distinction of really taking the situation seriously, and providing a lot of attention to the psychological effects the zombie takeover would have on his characters, which make his films richer in both depth and emotional heft, as these characters all have flaws and weaknesses. Some of them overcome them, while some do not. To me, these characters and the way they develop are what set this film apart, and make it truly fascinating. Compare this with the characters in the 2004 remake and how it is shown that they deal with the reality of the collapse of society; they make a game of shooting the zombies that look like celebrities. Whereas the characters in Romero's original bring their neuroses with them into the mall, and he gets a lot of tension and resonance out of how these petty tendencies endure even in the face of the end of the world. The characters in the remake simply get used to their situation and try to pass time. The remake is a great thriller, but just doesn't have the resonance of the original.

A lot of people hate what they consider to be the slapstick comedy that occurs when the bikers invade the mall at the end-particularly the pie-in-the-face scene. It doesn't bother me. In fact, I thought it was a successful continuation of the theme, as it follows the line of degrees of obliviousness to the real threat. We, the audience, by that time, have learned not to underestimate the zombies, and I found it affecting to watch the foolish bikers do silly things like the pie in the face and the blood pressure machine, as it shows the downside to their casual and mocking attitude toward life, and how people with that attitude can really screw things up for others. It also provides a good contrast with the main characters, who may engage in small and petty interests, but in general work together and for a longer-term goal, as opposed to the bikers, who seem to unknowingly risk everything just for an immediate thrill. I find this moving and vital to the film, but I guess to many people a pie in the face can never be anything but slapstick.

The movie ends without much of a resolution-only that the characters must keep moving, trying to survive-but what has come before is so involving, moving, and true-to-life that what sticks in the mind afterward are the characters, their struggles, and the hopelessness that they have fought against, rather than the gore or exploding heads, and that goes a long way toward explaining why this movie is as enduring and resonant as it is.

Are you ready to get down with the sickness? Movie logic dictates that you shouldn't remake a classic, but Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead defies that logic and comes up a winner. You could argue that George A. Romero's 1978 original was sacred ground for horror buffs, but it was a low-budget classic, and Snyder's action-packed upgrade benefits from the same manic pacing that energized Romero's continuing zombie saga. Romero's indictment of mega-mall commercialism is lost (it's arguably outmoded anyway), so Snyder and screenwriter James Gunn compensate with the same setting--in this case, a Milwaukee shopping mall under siege by cannibalistic zombies in the wake of a devastating viral outbreak--a well-chosen cast (led by Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, and Mekhi Phifer), some outrageously morbid humor, and a no-frills plot that keeps tension high and blood splattering by the bucketful. Horror buffs will catch plenty of tributes to Romero's film (including cameos by three of its cast members, including gore-makeup wizard Tom Savini), and shocking images are abundant enough to qualify this Dawn as an excellent zombie-flick double-feature with 28 Days Later, its de facto British counterpart. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Not Your Typical Dull Horror Remake.......2007-06-26

When the opening credits are played over a backdrop of apocalyptic zombie carnage and set to Johnny Cash's "When the Man Comes Around," you know you're not dealing with another dull horror remake. This version actually matches (if not surpasses) the original. True, it drops the satirical angle of the original, using the mall as a set-piece instead of an indictment of consumer culture--blasphemy for Romero fans, but not entirely missed by anyone else.

If you enjoyed Zack Snyder's more recent work (the movie "300"), "Dawn of the Dead" will certainly provide you with some additional visceral thrills.

4 out of 5 stars Decent update on the old zombie film.......2007-06-14

Based in Millwaukee, this film is a non stop thrill ride. Zombies popping out of all places. This movie starts right out from start to finish with non stop thrills, and pretty good special effets. I was not expecting much when I cought this flipping through the movie channels, but I found myself watching it all the way through. Simple to follow, suspenseful enough, worth a rental, or even a purchase.

3 out of 5 stars Dawn of the Dead 1978 vs. Dawn of the Dead 2004:.......2007-05-20

Dawn of the Dead 1978:

* The blood and gore are MORE SICKLY AND BETTER on this one.
* The zombies are more creepy by walking slow and NOT running.
* There is MORE action and gore on this one.
* The movie here is longer.
* The videogames scene was very cool.
* The ending is more suspensful here.

Dawn of the Dead 2004:

* The budget is better.
* The acting is better.
* The made up baby zombie scene is CREEPY.
* The are a little more celebrities on this one.
* The zombie make up is MUCH BETTER!
* The blood and gore are more graphic here but less cool.
* The concept here is a little bit better.

To my conclution, the 1978 version is the CLASSIC and MUCH BETTER version of the two. This one is entertaining but not so cool, you can watch it but please don't buy it!

Adios.

5 out of 5 stars Are you kidding?.......2007-04-11

If you're reading this, buy the damn thing. This movie will make sweet, sweet love to you with its gigantic, throbbing coolness.

4 out of 5 stars READ MY REVIEW!! (If you haven't seen it yet).......2007-03-25

You've all heard about Dawn Of The Dead (1979), and you also heard that in this version "the first 15-20 minutes were good....". I'm here to protest on that quote. Yes, it's true that the first 15-20 minutes was good and creepy. And it's true that most of the movie were about people camping out in the mall. But most zombie killing were about the last 40 minutes. But the movie never explained about the disease and how it all started. "28 Days Later" wasn't really a zombie movie, but it explained about the disease. I gave this 4 out of 5 for 3 reasons....... one is when the part the father of the red-head chick was shot, everyone started having thrills and playing around, and that stupid song played. Second reason is that there weren't enough killing parts. Third reason is, there were 16 people in the movie but only 1 person got killed in a small crowd of undead. All the rest of the people started turning into zombies, and some people started killing each other for stupid reasons. And 2 guys were being eatened but died before getting killed by the zombies. The tough security guy that was part bald and sweared a lot was my favorite character. I have one last question, what happened to the blonde girl's husband after he turned into a zombie? He was the husband of the main character, we could've at least seen him getting killed. Another question is why did the military pass the survivors? Were they blind?

Things that could improve this movie:
1. Show military fighting against the zombies.
2. Show more characters being eatened by the huge crowd of zombies.
3. More sex.

Look at the bright side, they have really good graphics! They should try to make a second one!

    * The budget is better.
    * The acting is better.

4 out of 5 stars An early Buscemi movie. And one of his best........2006-08-20

I saw Steve Buscemi at a party last year, and told him that "Ed and His Dead Mother" was one of my all-time favorite comedies. I said I was surprised that it didn't take off. He said, "Some films just don't make it." Attribute that more to the marketing than the nature of the film or its provacative title. Watch it a couple of times. A little dark comedy is good for the soul.

Ed and His Dead Mother (Jonathan Wacks, 1993)

Jonathan Wacks knows funny. Any guy whose name is listed as a producer for Repo Man, one can safely assume, knows funny. And while you have to have a particular sense of humor to really find this film amusing, you had to for Repo Man as well.

Ed Chilton (Reservoir Dogs' Steve Buscemi in an early role) is the owner of a hardware store left him by his mother, Mabel (Miriam Margolyes), who died a year before. He now lives with her brother, Benny (Ned Beatty), and his social interaction is restricted to Benny, who prefers spending his time watching Storm Reynolds, the curvaceous new neighbor (Hercules: The Legendary Journeys' Sam Jenkins, who went on to marry Kevin Sorbo), through a telescope, and Big Lar (Dead Man's Gary Farmer), seemingly the hardware store's only regular employee. Until, that is, Mr. Abner (Blood Work's Roberty Harvey), a salesman from the Happy People Corporation, shows up and proposes to Ed that perhaps he'd be happier were his mother home from the grave.

As with Repo Man, Ed and His Dead Mother is not knock-down drag-out comedy-- it's mostly ninety minutes of "WTF?" with a couple of really, really funny lines thrown in for good measure. In the hands of most folks, this would not work. Wacks, however, plays it for all it's worth, aided by a stellar cast (Beatty, especially, is in career form) and a cracking script. The only thing one can put in the minus column for this one is that it was Wacks' first feature as a director, and there are some first-time director mistakes (pacing, mostly). However, it wouldn't be too hard to see this becoming as a big a cult film as Repo Man now that it's gotten a decent DVD release. *** ½

3 out of 5 stars Night of the Living Dead Overly Protective Mother.......2005-08-18

Not a bad flick, Ed and His Dead Mother is a bit too fey to be great, but it's fun to watch anyway. Steve Buscemi is the title character (Ed, not his mother), someone whose emotions are very clearly mixed up as he struggles to reach maturity. He's the manager of a hardware store whose mother and father have both passed on. And he's definitely attached to his mother.

Steve is very good but not great in this role. The casting is a smidgen off. The script is, as well, good but not great. Some of the scenes are right on the money; some are weaker than they should be. Ed's approached by John Glover--the best cast role in the film; Glover is perfect here--who's a salesman for Happy People, a firm that brings dead people back to life. He promises Ed to bring his mother back for only a thousand bucks and Ed agrees.

One of the best scenes occurs soon after she returns from the grave when Uncle Benny--Ned Beatty in a role that, again, is just a bit off in its casting (he's good but not great)--points out to Ed that his mother is inside an appliance. (don't worry; not giving anything away here). There are a number of black comedy moments like this which work, but there are a number that don't work either. Or at least, not quite.

Miriam Margolyes is, as well, good but not great in the role of Mother. If there is any problem, it's the script which is not consistently strong. The ideas are there and sometimes well executed, but almost as often, don't quite make it. Leaving the fantasy element aside, can we actually believe that a really hot babe would fall for Ed? I don't think so.

This is really not a bad flick at all. It's just not as good as it could and should have been.

3 out of 5 stars Buscemi is great in the lead role.......2004-07-13

I rented this movie thinking it would be a bad movie, but because of the great Steve Buscemi i went for it, and it wasnt that bad at all. The premise is silly and some comedy aspects of the film dont necessarily work, but Buscemi and Ned beatty are really good in their respective roles. If your a steve buscemi fan, dont miss this one.

    5 out of 5 stars Forgotten Gem.......2003-12-14

After recently viewing the stellar "Trees Lounge," a film written, directed, and starring veteran character actor Steve Buscemi, my mind conjured forth dim recollections of the classic 1993 film "Ed and His Dead Mother." I say classic here because this movie, starring Steve Buscemi, should easily fall into that category. That people do not consider this film a must see production is a shame of epic proportions. Its obscurity is sort of a mystery to me, since I first saw the film when it received a wide showing on cable television back in the early to mid 1990s. I know if I saw it and remembered it, masses of other people must have had a similar experience, but apparently not if the dearth of reviews here is any indication. Viewers who adore the blackest of comedies really ought to give this one a shot because few films attain this level of laugh out loud hilarity while making you feel terrible for finding such material amusing. Even if you aren't a fan of black comedy, you should still watch "Ed and His Dead Mother" for the stand out performances from Buscemi, Ned Beatty, John Glover, and Miriam Margolyes.

Ed Chilton (Steve Buscemi) has a bit of a problem. He's a huge momma's boy whose mother recently passed on. Since Ed's father died years ago, this calamity means Ed got his mother's house, the family hardware store, and a huge check from the insurance company. The only real family Chilton has left is his Uncle Benny (Ned Beatty), an aging miscreant who likes to scan neighborhood windows with a telescope. The days pass slowly without his mother around, but Ed copes as best he can down at the hardware store where he occasionally encounters the local preacher looking for a bear trap big enough so he can catch his wife cheating on him (!). A weird town filled with strange people gets stranger still when A.J. Pattle (John Glover), crack salesman for Happy People, Ltd, arrives in town with an offer Ed Chilton would be hard pressed to pass up. For a measly one thousand dollars, Pattle promises to raise Ed's mother from her resting place. Moreover, the verbose salesman assures Ed that anyone who contracts with Happy People is sure to find full satisfaction with this seemingly shocking procedure. Heck, Pattle's company has resurrected some important people over the years, as evidenced by the pictures of such well known customers as Nancy Reagan seen hanging on the walls at the company headquarters. Ed quickly folds under the relentless assault of Pattle's pitch and coughs up a check. After the two haggle over a few pesky problems (Ed's mother did not receive the best attention from the undertaker), it isn't any time before mom shows up at the house just like she's never been away.

Sounds great, doesn't it? Well, Ed soon faces a whole host of unforeseen problems. A sexy number, named Storm of all things, moves in across the street and soon fixes her eyes on our hapless hero. Uncle Benny is less than happy about the reemergence of mom, too, since he can no longer live the type of life he finally achieved with the death of his overbearing sister. Moreover, a former store employee sent away for stealing by Chilton's mum just got out of prison and decides to seek revenge against the family. To top it all off, the reanimation procedure requires Mother Chilton to eat a daily allotment of huge roaches to stay alive. When she doesn't follow her dietary regimen to a T, weird things start to happen in the Chilton household. Mom might bake hundreds of pies in a few hours, or chase pets with power tools through the neighborhood streets, or dress in provocative clothing and prance about on her bed. She might even go after human beings with riding lawn mowers. Recently reanimated mothers with access to a hardware store spell trouble. Ed ultimately must make difficult decisions about his mom, but they are choices that hold the key to letting go and moving on with life. Maybe.

It is the performances that really make "Ed and His Dead Mother" such a hilarious romp through the realms of black comedy. Ned Beatty deserves some sort of award for his turn as the side splittingly funny Uncle Benny. The star of "Deliverance" plays his role here with stone faced deliberateness, with most of the funniest lines in the entire movie coming right from his character's mouth. I will never forget his response to Ed's inquiry as to the whereabouts of mother one morning after her return to the house: "Your mother is in the refrigerator," delivered with perfect comic timing. Buscemi and Margolyes are always good no matter what the role and both do an excellent job here. John Glover is perfectly cast as the slick A.J. Pattle, a man willing to seal the deal no matter what it takes. You almost need to rewatch the film in order to catch everything his character says because he says it so fast and so smoothly, just as a door-to-door salesman should.

"Ed and His Dead Mother," despite its black humor, is really a film about dealing with loss, and how a person must learn to cope with that loss and live their own lives to the fullest. It is great to see this get a DVD release, with a great picture transfer and plenty of extras. A commentary from director Jonathan Wacks graces this disc, along with a trailer and alternate beginning and ending sequences. A cult classic that never became cult or classic, "Ed and His Dead Mother" is required viewing for fans of twisted black comedy.

With music by The Charlatans, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Lynne Hughes, Mark Unobsky, Dan Hicks, Alice Stuart, Ph Phactor Jug Band, Final Solution, Wildflower, Boston Wranglers, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service

    Directed By: Mary Works

Their names and music became legendary: Big Brother & the Holding Company, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and the house band - The Charlatans. If the psychedelic sixties were born in the dancehalls of San Francisco, then they were conceived in a saloon in Virginia City, Nevada where the musicians carried Winchesters & the kitchen served French gourmet meals.

The psychedelic era fostered cultural growth and artistic expression. The Red Dog Saloon was the incubator for the lightshow and psychedelic poster art, an entire lifestyle that truly defined a remarkable era and defied classification as it weaved it's tapestry of free love and music, which the Grateful Dead would spread around the world.

Filmmaker Mary Works (assistant editor "Titanic", "Saving Private Ryan") was entrusted with access to the lives, antics and attics of this unique extended rock and roll family that grew out of these wild times.

DVD Features - A conversation with the filmmakers, Where are they now?, Jim Marshall Photo Gallery and Interview

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and Historical.......2007-02-05

This DVD says it all--the history, the music of the era, the culture of the 60s San Franciso-Virginia City, NV scene that helped to create it..amazing Charlatans.

    5 out of 5 stars Straight From the Horse's -- er -- Dog's Mouth.......2007-01-30

I gave this DVD every star available. It is solidly produced and presents a robust explication of a Movement which is taken for granted now, but was, lest we forget, ephemeral and wildly improbable in the extreme. Yet it happened. Chaos theory spins a tale of the "butterfly effect" which can eventually power a hurricane on the other side of the Earth. How did the long hair of the Hippie's actually come about? Were Hippies "slobs", "bums", "idiots"? No, they were perfectionists, actually, as any Grateful Dead roadie could endlessly testify. The accessability of the story is perhaps too clear and immediate for viewers to credit on first viewing. This film will get under your skin. It is neglected, discounted anthropology. It is important.

5 out of 5 stars The only footage of the Charlatans are on this DVD.......2007-01-21

I have to agree with some aspects of the negative reviews found here: Yes, if you're looking for stories revolving around the popular bands of the area, don't buy it. Actually, only buy this, if you heard or read of the Red Dog Saloon before. Because then it's safe to assume that you are really familiar with the development of the music scene in San Francisco in the 60s. Because then you don't have to rely on this DVD to learn who the Grateful Dead or Jefferson Airplane were.

If the Red Dog Saloon does ring a bell, buy this DVD. Buy it, because it contains the only known footage of the Charlatans, the real pioneers. True: If you listen to their sound you would never guess that they were the spearhead of the music scene back in 64 and 65. But that's not the point. This DVD basically explains why the Charlatans worked as a band, as an image and as a visual focus point that drew people because it was way cool.

Also to be seen on DVD: Excerpts of the Red Dog Reunion concert back in the early 90s with the Charlatans and Big Brother And The Holding Company. Lynne Hughes is there, too. The background of the Light Machine is explained. Interviews with people from the scene less famous than the typical names associated with it. Oh yes, and music. Music that is virtually forgotten by most of us today but still belongs and is easily identified as part of the dawn of psychedelic rock.

The bottom line: Great if not fantastic DVD for people interested in the background of the music scene. It concentrates on the Red Dog and leaves therefore little room for the more famous bands of the area. But that was not the intention. The DVD is a joy to watch. It is great to listen to the interviews. I will treasure this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Psychedelic Music Backstory .......2006-04-16

I consider this an essential documentary of the sixties music scene. It's a story that might well be lost without this film.

If you're expecting a Grateful Dead video, like all the other videos from this company, then don't bother buying this one.

I'm really quite shocked by the one star reviews of this fascinating video. I guess either you get it or you don't.

Rockin' at the Red Dog isn't boring - it's hip, man, you dig?

3 out of 5 stars What happened to the Thirteenth.......2006-03-16

Floor Elevators? I know it is always debateable as to who coined the term psychedelic and who was the first "psychedelic" band. I don't know for sure. History is fickle at best in this area, but I do think that in any psychedelic movie the Elevators should certainly at least be mentioned, as well as some other bands of the era...but it is always the Grateful Dead, Big Brother, Quicksilver, and the San Francisco bands that are mentioned. Don't get me wrong. They belong there and I still enjoy their music--especially Quicksilver's--but where are Roky Erikson and the Thirteenth Floor Elevators?

5 out of 5 stars A New Look At An Old Classic.......2006-10-23

I remember sneaking into the theater for a midnight screening of Dawn of the Dead .For years the American Theatrical release was all there was to view .But I had heard that one of my favorite directors ,Dario Argento , had a different edit and soundtrack but the same basic movie for Europe .I can't decide on which version I like the best .I like that Zombi fleshes out the characters a little more and that the humor is toned down .The tension between the news and police characters is palpable at times .There are some extended scenes ,additional ones and even some shortened ones .They work .I didn't find myself saying the original was way better ,or how dare he re-edit this movie .Zombi has a more fatalistic feel to it than Dawn does .Even the soundtrack by Goblin gives off a more headlong down the hill feel to it .I have recommended this to people I know .

5 out of 5 stars The Best Zombie movie ever made!.......2006-09-24

Directed by George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead) and presented by Dario Argento (Suspiria). This the European version by Argento called Zombi. Picking up where NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD left off, and still offering no explanation of why the dead are walking the earth, DAWN OF THE DEAD plunges headlong into one of the most violent and original horror films ever made. After securing an apartment building overcome with flesh-eating zombies, two Philadelphia area SWAT team members, Peter (Ken Foree) and Roger (Scott Reiniger), flee to a television station, where they escape in the station's helicopter with Francine (Gaylen Ross) and Stephen (David Emge), two station employees. Seeking refuge from the zombies and the ensuing hysteria, they land on top of a Pittsburgh area shopping mall, despite the fact that the undead seem to be flocking there. What begins as a stop for supplies becomes a longer stay as the four become embroiled in a futile war within the mall to keep their flesh to themselves and remain alive. The film's relentlessly disturbing and innovative gore effects are one reason to see DAWN OF THE DEAD, but those who can stomach the endless barrage of blood and gnarled zombie faces will be rewarded--and possibly surprised--by what the film says about human nature and life within a consumer-based culture. Any aficionado of horror is likely to place the film high on their list of revered cinema.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as Romero's.......2006-03-24

A great many people say that Argento's European version of Dawn of the Dead, titled "Zombi," is neither better nor worse than Romero's masterpiece; it's just another director's take. Some have even said, as Argento's version cuts out most of the dark humor and is shorter, that it's better. I could not disagree more. Before I begin let me make it abundantly clear that I think Argento is the best horror director out there, with Deep Red, Suspiria, and Tenebre easily ranking among the absolute greatest horror films ever made. So what's wrong with Argento's version of Dawn of the Dead? Glad you asked, dear reader. Argento, notoriously, does not like to work with actors. He also does not seem to care much about character development. This really shows in his version of Dawn of the Dead. Many of the scenes pertaining to character development are lacking in Argento's version. He takes many of the scenes pertaining to the taking of the mall, the clean up, and settling in - the shopping, dining, and attempting to live normally, etc., and only shows brief clips of them. Compared to Romero's version these clips seem highly random. As a result the story does not flow nearly as well as it does in Romero's version fo the film. There is little-to-no build up, and absolutely no character development. Roger isn't shown starting to loose it; he's just all-of-a-sudden crazy. The drama between flyboy and his girl isn't shown developing; he's just all-of-a-sudden emotionally destroyed. It's all pretty random and ludicrous. Many of the best scenes in Romero's version are here altogether missing: the crack about hicks loving it the way it is; the zombie getting the top of its head knocked off by the chopper blades; the much loved Muzak that pipes through the mall. In fact, a couple of times, the order Argento shows the scenes in is literally so random that it actually results in a few mistakes in the film. The soundtrack by The Goblins, which Argento uses more than Romero, does not always fit the film. Argento, for instance, spends way more time with the looters at the end of the film (almost a half hour out of two hours for the whole movie!), and he plays annoying heavy metal music almost throughout the entire scene. Here the scene of the bikers that attack the mall is long, drawn out, and anticlimatic. Aside from the fact that Argento's version simply does not flow well or build (I felt like I was watching a long trailer for Romero's director's cut), it also lacks much of the social commentary Romero's film has regarding consumerism. Further, Argento's version also utterly lacks the feeling of excitement that Romero's film creates. In Romero's version the four characters escape crisis, take the mall, go "hunting," clean up the mess, and then start settling down into the caricature of a normal existence when tragedy again strikes. The scenes of these characters rebuilding their lives in the mall are some of the best parts of the film, and are all but missing in Argento's choppy film. To conclude, in my book, Romero's version wins hands down. Argento's, surprisingly, is a mess compared to it. By the way, Lucio Fulci named his zombie masterpiece "Zombi 2" so that Europeans might think it was a sequel to Argento's release. Incidentally, Fulci's Zombi is also a much better film than Argento's Zombi. I am not saying, however, that Argento's version isn't worth watching. In fact, it's very instructional to watch both versions. It's amazing how many variables must come together to produce a good film; it goes far beyond merely having a good script, director, and actors. Watching these two versions makes it clear that one must also have good editors, and a good soundtrack as well, as the same footage, shown with a different soundtrack, can have a dramatically different feel. This is evidenced by comparing the American, dubbed versions of films with alternate soundtracks to the original foreign film (such as The Prodigal Son, for instance.) So watch them both, by all means. To me they are very different, as different as Schrader and Harlin's versions of the Exorcist prequel.

      4 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC IS A CLASSIC !.......2006-01-30

Dario Argento's european version of 'DAWN OF THE DEAD' released in Italy under the title 'ZOMBIE' is neither better or worse than George A. Romero's version. Dario's version is a bit darker & ofcourse the music by the legendary Goblin is excellent & is the biggest difference between the two versions but a classic is a classic so wich ever one you own really doesn't matter because at the end of the day you still own a classic zombie film. I still recommend the ultimate box set, then you have both versions & lots of other gitts & shiggles!

      * The budget is better.
      * The acting is better.
