Wes Craven's horror pictures always have a few wild ideas knocking around inside them, and this 1989 slashfest is no exception. The electrocution of a mass murderer turns into a kind of cosmic jump-start: evil Horace Pinker is reborn as an elusive electronic phantom, capable of leaping from one body to another. (This trick is also used to good effect in The Hidden and Fallen.) Pinker's a stinker, and Craven was clearly trying to set up another franchise villain in the vein of his Nightmare on Elm Street champ, Freddy Krueger--perhaps a bit too baldly. However, amidst the mayhem, the film's real subject is the poisonous presence of mass media, as Pinker (played by The X-Files' Mitch Pileggi) insinuates himself as a free-floating spirit run amok in television itself. In its own pulp way, Shocker gets at the heart of media-culture inanity quicker than a ten-week college class on the subject, and although Craven occasionally lapses into generic bloodletting, he always snaps right back with some crazy angle on the TV nation. The hero is played by a young Peter Berg, the Chicago Hope star who would go on to direct his own shocker, Very Bad Things. Shocker failed to catch on with audiences (somewhere there's a warehouse full of unsold Horace Pinker action figures), but it's definitely worth a look for horror fans. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars better than I thought.......2007-01-10

This dvd comes with two episodes. A shocker on shock street and click. A shocker on shock street was pretty good. It was one of the most interesting goosebumps episodes I've seen. Click wasn't as good, but still good enough to watch.I found click to be more humurous than scary. While I was watching it I kept thinking, this is a goosebumps episode? This episode did kind of have a scary twisted ending though as most of the episodes do. If you like goosebumps, you should watch this one.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Episode...Not great........2006-08-11

Even though this DVD hasen't been released yet, I remember this episode constintly being re-run on FOX KIDS. It was an alright episode from what I can remember. I don't want to give away the ending or anything but I think the kids end up being robots.

Rocky gets a prison-block makeover in Undisputed, and the generic combination packs a vicious one-two punch. Owing much to the macho, gut-busting B movies of Hollywood's golden age, this no-nonsense drama gets right down to business, beginning when heavyweight champ "Iceman" Chambers (Ving Rhames) enters Sweetwater prison on a rape charge. The prison has a boxing program, and convicted killer Monroe Hutchen (Wesley Snipes) is the 10-year undefeated champion. A challenge bout is coordinated by an aging mobster prisoner (Peter Falk) and the head guard (Michael Rooker), and Undisputed pummels its way to its brutal and unpredictable conclusion. Colorful characters abound (foul-mouthed Falk is the hilarious standout), and seasoned director Walter Hill (coscripting with his Alien partner David Giler) brings them together with invigorating focus. There's not an ounce of fat on this tough-minded movie, and even its inevitable outcome seems freshly unexpected. Obviously inspired by Mike Tyson's ill-fated escapades, Undisputed turns fact into potent cellblock fiction. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Two of Hollywood's hottest stars -- Wesley Snipes (BLADE 1&2, PASSENGER 57) and Ving Rhames (PULP FICTION, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 1&2) -- go head-to-head in this explosive crime thriller! When the world's heavyweight champion (Rhames) is sent to prison, everything points to an inevitable showdown with the penitentiary's undefeated champ (Snipes). But to make sure the meeting will happen, a former mob boss (Peter Falk -- TV's COLUMBO, CORKY ROMANO) must call in favors from the outside world. Then the battle is on ... and the action, adrenaline, and intensity switch into high gear! Also featuring Master P (RHYME & REASON, I GOT THE HOOK-UP) and Ed Lover (RIDE) -- this powerfully entertaining motion picture is another crowd-pleaser from the hit-making director of 48 HRS., ANOTHER 48 HRS., and LAST MAN STANDING!

3 out of 5 stars If You Need This DVD, Buy It For Less Than $5.00!.......2007-02-04

Like I said, if you need this DVD, make sure you get a cheap used copy. The story & theme is a rehash of other movies, but if you take this movie with a grain of salt (In other words...don't have HIGH expectations!!), you might enjoy it. Welsey Snipes & Ving Rhames together in a boxing / prison movie with a touch of Mafia...the mere thought is laughable (so is the fairy tale "he lived happily ever after" ending!! LOL), but I found the movie mildly entertaining, and shoot the price was right. On a scale of 1-5, I give the movie 2.5 stars, but it's not bad for the price. Let's hope 'Undisputed 2' is much better...that shouldn't be too hard!
Peace, SD

4 out of 5 stars I really like this movie...........2004-08-25

Okay, i first saw this movie on cable and since they keep showing it every couple of months, i've probably seen it a total of 4 times. And i have to say...I really like this movie. I'm not a boxing fan, nor am i a fan of prison movies, but there's something about watching Wesley Snipes' understated performance as Huchens that captures my attention. I also enjoyed the side characters (Falk as Mendy is hilarious) and it's their interaction with one another (Snipes and his sidekick Ratbag...lol...Rhames and his cellmate...what's his name?... bad guy from Last Mohicans...oh yeah...Studi) that really make the movie. Needless to say, i don't want to wait for cable to show it again, i'm gonna buy the *^%$! DVD.

4 out of 5 stars starightforward and entertaining.......2004-08-24

A straightforward movie of the usual Hillbent-men who are men, but not undercomplicated, in situations that test them. Although it might be argued that the Snipes character is the "good guy", there really is no full on bad guy. Rather, you have a wonderful muddle of ambiguous characters. The sidekicks are interesting in that each seems better suited not for who he is paired up with, but for that opponent of that pairing. Though I recommend the film, I am reminded in watching it that Rhames is no actor; he offers the same flat I-must-be-cool approach to his roll in this film as he did in Pulp Fiction or Mission Impossible or Dark Blue.

4 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining........2004-05-03

Looking over several of the poor reviews is rather surprising, unless you hate the violence promoted by boxing. This is a really good boxing movie. You have a Mike Tyson-like character who winds up in prison duking it out with a modest hard lifer in a real prison with hundreds of real convicts for extras. It's interesting to watch from 2 perspectives, boxing itself and prison. However, it's definitely a movie for the guys.

4 out of 5 stars Fast paced action drama, no it's best presentation.......2004-04-22

This has got to be the most obvious movie you will ever watch as the fights and outcomes, court hearing, prison moves from Rhames and Snipes, not their best movie though, they've did some great ones like Ving in 'Pulp Fiction' and Snipes in 'The Fan'.
Although the realistic fight at the end between reigning prision champ, Snipes and Challenger and former Heavyweight Champion of the world accused of rape, was worth the 1 1/2 hour watch. Some of the storylines in this movie is a bit zany and unauthorised charecters that make apearences in this movie enter then suddenly vanish from the script. If this movie took long enough to make with the fluential budget ammount and great cast of charecters, it would've made a name.

5 out of 5 stars This is a Shocker - Get Ready and Order It.......2007-03-09

I love this trashy, but scary film. It's a guilty pleasure, one not to share with minor children or females of the species.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Wes Craven movie.......2007-01-12

I liked this movie from when it started to when it ended. I didn't have any complaints about this movie at all. It had all of the "scares" of any horror film out there. It did take a small twist of how the killer comes back which I thought was ingenious. I won't give it away because it would spoil the movie to anyone that wants to watch it. I recommend this movie to anyone that likes the 80s horror flicks.

3 out of 5 stars THE SOLO JOURNEY OF HORACE PINKER.......2006-11-18

It's obvious that Wes Craven had high hopes for Horace Pinker to be another Freddy Krueger, but alas and alack, it didn't happen. Perhaps it's best. Although SHOCKER is a competent little thriller with some neat ideas, Pinker just isn't the kind of villain that could sustain as many films as the incomparable Freddy did. Mitch Pileggi does a great job as the bald-headed bad guy, but his shtick of being "electrified" would have been limited and eventually redundant. Taken on its own merits, though Craven delivers a well-done if not memorable 'shocker' in its own right. Peter Berg does a good job as the hero, and Michael Murphy is dependable as Berg's adopted father. Although the script is at times a little confusing and improbable, the entire effect is good for a few shocks and laughs.

1 out of 5 stars not realy very good.......2006-06-27

wes craven must have been tring to do the elm street thing again with this low brow non horror movie. a waste of film and time and the killer in this movie doesn't have 1/10 the scare factor of freddy!!!! skip it!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars A Great Start To What SHOULD Have Been A Long-Running Series.......2005-08-28

With Horace Pinker, "Shocker" aims to create a new horror icon on par with Freddy Krueger or Jason Voorhees. It doesn't succeed the first time around, but with time it could have come close. Pinker is a menacing and original villain, visually distinctive as is necessary when you're going for the icon-level, and one of the most purely nasty villains in his vein. So when I say Shocker's lead didn't reach the level of a Freddy or a Jason that's not a put-down. It's a high mountain to climb to attain that kind of tremendous status, and this movie was off to a good start but sadly never got the chance to follow up on its potential with sequels that might have been even better. Maybe it's not too late. Apparantly "Sleepaway Camp", "Happy Birthday To Me" and a couple of other horror movies from a long way back are slated to be continued with new sequels (not remakes) after all this time, so who knows? Not every horror movie needs a sequel (a few, like "Dagon", "In The Mouth Of Madness" and "Mute Witness" come to mind that I think are best served Without one) and some that do call for a sequel only need one or two, but I think the field is best served when it has a few ongoing series where you can count on a new installment at least every two or three years on average. They don't have to run forever (except F13; that can go to Chapter Twenty and beyond as far as I'm concerned), but phase new ones in as others wrap out. In the 80s/early 90s, F13, Nightmare On Elm Street, Hellraiser, Halloween and a few others all came at a good clip, Most of the time delivering a chapter that was very good if not ouright outstanding. I would have liked for Shocker to have had a few more turns.

As for the single entry we got, the early minutes show the apprehension of the brutal, very sadistic Pinker while still in his human, non-supernatural form, and follows through with the trial and execution, at which point the character returns from the dead, having utilized some kind of dark magic that's transmuted him into some kind of cross between a ghost and an electrical entity travelling through the wires. And thus his rampage is continued and upped considerably. There's nothing likable about Horace, but he is a fearsome onscreen prescence and a good villain; well-played by Mitch Pileggi. The incredibly cute Cami Cooper, as the main female in the movie and the girlfriend of the character who becomes Pinker's primary adversary, is also very memorable, and without question hits the nail right on the head in the 'Visually Impressive' department. Very good but not really close to the best of its kind (hence part of the reason there should have been sequels - they could have picked up some of the potential that slipped through the cracks), I'm unsure whether to give this a strong three stars or a tentative four. I realize a lot of reviewers seem to think a three is a low rating, but I consider it pretty high; I prefer to leave the four-stars and five-stars for the really excellent/outstanding and for those that are among the best ever (now director Wes Craven's previous creation of a horror icon, the first Elm Street, got five stars and it would have been unthinkable to give it anything else). I guess I'll go with a really strong three and hope that doesn't make people think I'm cutting it short; on my scale a low three is still usually pretty good and "Shocker"'s a high 3-Star, about a seven, maybe 7.5, out of ten. Recommended.

    Description

Wes Craven, the director of The Serpent and the Rainbow and Shocker, locks you inside the most terrifying house on the street. Trapped inside a fortified home owned by a mysterious couple, a young boy is suddenly thrust into a nightmare. The boy quickly learns the true nature of the house's homicidal inhabitants and the secret creatures hidden deep within the house. Stunning visuals highlight this inventive film that the San Francisco Chronicle calls, "Wes Craven's most satisfying movie."

Master of horror Wes Craven directs this exciting visual treat which introduces a diabolical mass murderer who harnesses electricity for unimaginable killing powers. About to be electrocuted for a catalog of heinous crimes, the unrepentant Horace Pinker (Mitch Pileggi) transforms into a terrifying energy source. Only young athlete Jonathan Parker (Peter Berg), with an uncanny connection to Pinker through bizarre dreams, can fight the powerful demon. The two dive in and out of television programs, chasing each other from channel to channel through stunning scenes of disaster, game shows and old reruns. A blend of dazzling special effects, jolting humor and an electrifying soundtrack, Shocker is an ironic tale of terror and madness in the video age.

    5 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD.......2006-10-14

Good story - good acting - master p has released some pretty good films and some pretty bad ones.

This is one of the better dvds from p.

the music video at the end of the film ( we soldiers) is not on any album.

worth watching even if you are not a fan of master p.

1 out of 5 stars You've got to be kidding!!!.......2005-05-26

The first Bout It, for a low budget movie was outstanding and innovative. It was gritty and poignantly real. In the Still Bout It, I don't know what the H@*L they were doing. The movie was simply atrocious! I was so disappointed in the movie that I wanted to throw it out of a window. I am a big supporter of Master P and the No Limit family however, he needs to stick to music or come real next time on the movie tip. Don't waste your money!

5 out of 5 stars Bout' it Bout' it.......2005-05-03

The least that can be said for Master P's "Still Bout It" is that this production is an overwhelming visual experience, supplemented by an imaginative use of all the divergent elements which go into filmmaking. The most that can be said for this MGM roadshow presentation in Cinerama, filmed in Super Panavision and Metrocolor, is that once again, as so rarely happens in film history, an individual talent -- Master P -- has widened and exalted the art of the film by his vision, dedication and uncompromising creative approach to the medium so often called the "synthesis of all art forms."
"Still Bout It" is indeed beyond description by conventional plot terms and descriptive tradepaper summaries. As the past 10 or 12 years have shown, the old narratives which dominated the film world have given way to themes, techniques and concepts, once the private property of the avant-garde, the experimental films, etc. Whether "Last Year at Marienbad" or "Trans-Europe-Express" from France, or Roger Corman's "The Trip" or Kubrick's "2001," from the U.S., the straightforward story has had it. And the audiences of today, primarily the under-30 group down to the early teens, have shown a great, almost revitalized, interest in movies as they are now being made.
With Arthur C. Clarke's assistance, plus the cooperation of NASA and leading American and British experts in the field of space, science, research and the Academy, Master P was able to create a real science-fiction film, one in which every element will quite possibly be known to man in less than 30 years.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Time..........2004-12-03

I like Master P and all, but, dude can't act! Silk The Shocker can't act! The only reason i gave it 1 star, is because the story was iight, and saying iight, is a stretch, but it was ok for a Master P movie. At times, it seemed they made this movie with a camcorder, i mean the acting was just horrible, i recommend you borrow this movie from someone who already has it, its not worth a dime, and i wouldnt pay a penny for it.

    2 out of 5 stars A Hot Mess!!.......2004-06-29

Laaawwwwdd, what was that I just watched. All that money Master P has and he has to release this low budget movie. The acting was atrocious to no end. Why don't Silkk the Shocker just give up on acting all together as long with his rap game.

The two stars were given because the story was good, but the acting just didn't do its justice.

I think Master P should know better!!!

    Later!!!!

5 out of 5 stars great box set.......2005-02-26

    a great box set
great premise to a great terrifing creator of amazing books ever read or made

People under the stairs: sick, funny, amusing, twisted, moving

the Serpent and the rainbow: sick twisted, funny, amazing, powerful, learn new insights

Shocker: funny at times, twisted, sick, powerful, moving, strange

all 3 movies have been seen at least 4 times each in my player and will be seen more

one offers psycho neighbors who butcher to feast with their crazy cruel dog

one offers complete lunacy into the world of voodoo and how far you really go into it when you want to get out

and the last offers trying to escape a supposedly dead convict who wants revenge for being fried but won't exactly get his way always

    all 3 are shocking
and all 3 are deserving to be seen

3 out of 5 stars Decent set, but devoid of extras.......2004-02-07

Collecting three films from horror maestro Wes Craven's Universal deal, this Wes Craven collection features Shocker, The People Under the Stairs, and The Serpent & The Rainbow. Shocker is a fun and over the top romp featuring The X-Files' Mitch Pileggi as a death row inmate whom acquires the ability to jump from person to person inhabiting their body. The People Under the Stairs finds Craven trying to rekindle a bit of the rawness of his earlier more barbaric films Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes with a story involving two kids trapped in a house with a cannibalistic couple and an even creepier secret. The Serpent & The Rainbow finds Craven adapting the best selling book and tells the story of a researcher (Bill Pullman) looking to find the secrets of voodoo and ending up way, way over his head. The only extras to be found are for Shocker which features a trailer and a few production notes, other than that there is nothing. You'd figure for a box set there would be some exclusive extras thrown in or maybe even a commentary or two, but alas, there is nothing. All in all, The Wes Craven Collection is worth buying if your a hardcore Craven fan and don't already own all three films, but otherwise this is rental material.

2 out of 5 stars switch on the ice T commentary.......2005-04-12

I am a BIG Ice-T fan, but even I have to admit, the only way to watch this movie is to watch the Ice-T commentary version. It's an absolute scream! He obviously knows how poorly the film came out, and is not above telling us about it. Ice-T is, well... Ice-T in his comments. Be prepared.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't belong on DVD. More like....a garbage can........2004-05-07

This film looked like it was shot on a handheld videocam, and it had the storyline of a television drama. Had about as much acting talent and creativity as one any way.

This made WB dramas look like Laurence Olivier films.

4 out of 5 stars a BRILLIANT commentary saves this from godawful wackness.......2004-01-23

this film is simply woeful.theres no other way to describe it.utterly devoid of acting, basic character development, and utterly no plot.i may slag certain films for poor dialogue or acting, but this doesnt contain ANY!!!!! the thing is,theres a certain enjoyment in watching something so pathetic that they seem ignorant to the fact its rubbish.it jerks and jumps and goes absolutely no where.there is no plot.no plot whatsoever.however, switch on the ice T commentary, and hey!!! its great!!!! this is possibly one of the best commentarys ever!!!! almost everything he says is hilarious!!! he basically admits the film is terrible and he was just having a laugh.he asks why silkk the shocker appeared in it."he's rich i dunno why he agreed to it".yeah,so do we. he goes on at length about how they didnt bother to film in new york, instead filming in a cheepo dump somewhere in eastern europe.theres so many quotes that ice T said that stick in my mind.for example, theres shots of new york when it switches from scene to scene."look at this, this is what new york is...tenements,hills....." wow thanks for that one."if you hear any noises,i had taco bells before i came here"."i dont know what the hell thats supposed to mean"."that B**** keeps looking at the clock,i dunno what message that means though".are brilliant!!!!!!! ice t is hillarious in this!!!!!! the guy has a great sense of humour, and i get the feeling what he does is meant to be taken slightly ironically.so,to summarise it; if you're looking for a film with action and thrills, look elsewhere.however,if you're looking for a rubbish film, and have someone make great comments about it,then look no further!!!!! id DEFINATELY recommend you buy this!!!!!!! i laughed pretty much the whole way through it. 4 outta 5

1 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE SHORTEST MOVIES I'VE SEEN IN MY LIFE.......2003-11-25

THIS IS ONE POOR EXCUSE FOR A GANGSTA MOVIE. A YOUNG THUG [SILKK THE SHOCKER] TRYS TO ESCAPE THE WRATH OF AN O.G. [ICE-T]. THIS HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF THE SHORTEST MOVIES I'VE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. COME ON, THIS MOVIE DIDN'T EVEN LAST AN HOUR! FILLED WITH ICE-T MUSIC FROM BEGINNING TO END. THIS MOVIE IS SERIOUSLY FLAWED. AS ALWAYS, IT'S FILMED ON A CHEAP BUDGET AND IT'S FILLED WITH BAD ACTING. THIS HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF THE MOST EMBARRASING MOVIES THAT ICE-T HAS EVER APPEARED IN. DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID. STAY AWAY FROM THIS TRASH AT ALL COSTS.

1 out of 5 stars Awful, but hilarious........2003-08-05

Corrupt *is* terrible from an aesthetic perspective, but Ice-T's hilarious commentary is worth the price of admission alone. If you're an MST3K fan, or just a fan of hilarious terrible films in general, you might enjoy Corrupt.

DVD.
