Several years after the mysterious events that claimed the life of the U.S. Ambassador and his wife, the now teenaged and militarily enrolled Damien Thorne is slowly being made aware of his unholy heritage and horrific destiny. Woe is he (including anyone in Damien's adoptive family and his classmates) who suspects the truth or gets in his way. While not as unrelentingly frightening as its blockbuster predecessor, this more-than-competent sequel to The Omen raises some interesting questions about the nature of free will (can the antichrist deny his birthright?) before falling into a gory series of increasingly outlandish deaths, the best of which is a terrifyingly protracted scene beneath the ice of a frozen lake. Jerry Goldsmith (who won an Oscar for his work on the first film in the series) contributes another marvelously foreboding score. --Andrew Wright

I purchased this set of films for my husband's collection. He loves to watch the old movies over and over. Most of his were on VHS so he is replacing them with DVDs.

I am a classic omen fan. These movies are a must have for any true fan.

4 out of 5 stars A Must Have Collection for Horror Fans!.......2007-02-09

It's great when they package a series of films and this is no exception and that's why I gave it four stars even though each film itself is of different quality; therefore, I gave my ratings below for each individual film. These were all mostly chilling films and they do what sequels are supposed to do and that is continue a storyline and not keep repeating the original. Here is my take on each film:

Omen (1976) ***** - Still one of my all time favorite films horror or not. The Academy Award-winning score by Jerry Goldsmith is still very haunting as is the rest of this film. Time has not altered the effectiveness of this great chiller which is enhance by great acting, notably by Greg Peck and Lee Remick, direction and cinematography. Nothing shows age with this film.

Omen (2006) *** - An unnecessary remake, but a decent one all the same with a good cast. It does lack the haunting images and feel of the original and probably a good example of leave well enough alone.

Omen II (1978) ***1/2 - A well-crafted sequel that cleverly continues the story which is what a sequel should do. Damien is growing up and learning of his heritage, power, and potential future and unexpectedly struggles with this much like any teen-ager growing up. The storyline is very convincingly continued here. It's not nearly as haunting and chilling as the original, but it does stand well up against it. Superior acting and an intelligent script save this film from being a typical sequel. While it is predicatable most of the time, the director keeps things moving swiftly. Good popcorn fun, but with a little more substance than most of its genre.

Omen III (1981) **** - The world is introduced to Damien, now an adult and seeking world domination through his company and followers, and we as an audience are introduced to a great actor, Sam Neil (Jurassic Park), in his first starring role. I was greatly impressed with this sequel and Neil's powerful performance filled with chilling charm and menacing arrogance. This film got under my skin more the Omen II, but still less so than the original film. My major criticism with this film is the ending which has several VERY long passages to read at the end in a font and size that is difficult to read. Thank God for the freeze frame function. Live audiences must have went nuts trying to read this in the theater and if they missed it, they'd have to stay to see it again to read faster. Overall, it was a very effective conclusion to the Omen series.

Omen IV (1991) **1/2 - Hey, didn't I just say conclusion in the last review? Well, sort of. This "sequel" is entertaining to a degree, but it does what all too many sequels tend to do and that is rehash the original and contradict it as well (much like "The Grudge 2"). This film is one of those it's so bad it's kind of good (but not that good). This is an example of Hollywood trying to save a money-making franchise, but they are fresh out of good ideas to continue the storyline. Heck, after killing Satan's son in Omen III, that kind of closed the door on things --duh! It's an oddball film that is mildly entertaining, but very pale in comparison to the series' prior efforts.

This whole collection is well worth owning. I can't imagine any horror fans letting this series slip by them.

This was the best of all the Omen Movies. It really shows the battle between good and evil in all of us.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Flicks Go To Hell.......2006-12-21

Like the initial "Omen" entry, this sequel tries so hard to be "scary." It's this ham-fisted effort to induce Terror that gives the film its ridiculously amateurish feel; here is the cynosure of comic book Apocalypse, a flatland of imagination that makes "Jason Goes To Hell" look like "Macbeth" by comparison!
As with the first "Omen" the most significant part of Omen The Second seems to be the musical score; based on Gregorian chant the sound is often thrilling. It is not, however, the Bold & Original Stroke that provincial critics would have one believe. In fact, legendary director Amando de Ossorio used ecclesiastical chants a few years previously in his "Blind Dead" series (a quartet of truly unsettling films beside which the "Omen" trilogy appears laughable). But not to digress: as the most noteworthy aspect of "The Omen 2"--its music--amounts to plagiarism, that should indicate what a shoddy flick we are considering here.
Tailor-made for dullards, the "Omen" trilogy will always garner a large audience. Nowadays it appeals mainly to Nostalgia freaks obsessed with any/all products of cheesy old Hollywood. More sophisticated life-forms, however, would do well to avoid these dreary flicks.

4 out of 5 stars The Omen (the sequel).......2006-12-18

The Omen 2 (1978) is the sequel to the original 1976 film The Omen. The story continues after the first where Damien is now a teenage military academy student and is one step closer to realizing who he really is and his heritage. Damien now lives with his aunt and uncle since his father Robert was killed.

At first, Damien is unaware of the incidents that took place during the first film. This makes him innocent at first but whenever someone crosses his path it is very apparent that something evil is going to happen. The film, like the original, has many memorable scenes and was also creepy though not as creepy as the first. With another good script and continuing good suspense, this movie is also a classic though a notch down overall from the first. If you haven't seen it yet, you should.

3 out of 5 stars The Son of a Jackal.......2006-10-31

As a film in its own right, Damien: Omen II is a somewhat desultory and stagnant affair. A laconic pace isn't helped by fairly uninspired acting and direction, although Jerry Goldsmith once again produces a memorable score. As a sequel to a very successful horror film however this film isn't too bad at all. Every horror fan by now knows the curse of the sequel and although Damien: Omen II is nowhere near as good as its predecessor it still has a lot going for it. Where it really excels is in its particularly imaginative set pieces, which I won't spoil here. Also like most decent modern horror films it has more to say than simply revelling in cathartic acts of violence. In the first film Damien is linked to the political arena, now he makes the shift towards the very heart of capitalist America; big business. Considering this is a Hollywood production it's quite amusing to see Damien rise to power through capitalism and consumerism, the very tools by which Hollywood and America are founded on. The natural connotation of this is that capitalism is satanic, a great plague spreading it's way across the world.

There is definitely some value to this sequel, which is incredibly rare for the horror genre, however the film does suffer from a somewhat flat and colourless quality and has the overall appearance of a made for TV movie.

5 out of 5 stars I actually liked Damien in this film!.......2006-10-23

Damien is a worthy successor to the original Omen classic. The music is taken up a notch from the original by Jerry Goldsmith. I loved this film all the way. What I particularly liked was the chemistry between Jonathan Scott-Taylor and Lucas Donat. They actually seem like real brothers. That's why Mark's death was so sad and painful to see (I'm sure Damien must have felt the same way). Another standout was Lee Grant-her acting was so strong, really convincing. All in all, a great movie, really awesome!!

4 out of 5 stars CALLING ALL FANS OF "THE OMEN"..........2006-09-27

This collection is one that all those who love gothic style thrillers will enjoy. It features the nineteen seventy six blockbuster, "The Omen" and all its progeny.

THE OMEN - ***** STARS

This is the jewel in this collection. It is a first class, gothic thriller with an outstanding cast, a riveting story line, and a musical score that will make the viewer want to sleep with the lights on! A first rate film, it had audiences riveted to the screen when it was first released and has withstood the test of time, as it is as gripping today, as when it was first released.

David Seltzer wrote a terrific screenplay in which an older, affluent, and socially prominent couple, Kathy and Robert Thorn (Lee Remick and Gregory Peck), have a baby, whom they name Damien. The baby turns out to be the Anti-Christ, who ends up causing a lot of trouble. This first class production, which is deftly directed by Richard Donner, is played with straightforward sincerity by its outstanding cast. The casting of Gregory Peck and Lee Remick was pure genius, as their distinguished reputations infused the movie with a believability not thought possible, given the theme of the script. Playing it straight, as a couple caught in a vortex of events over which they have little control, they sweep the viewer along with them. Supported by a fine cast, there are notable performances given by Billie Whitelaw, as the nanny with a mission, David Warner, as the photographer who begins to notice that something odd seems to be going on, and Harvey Stephens, as Damien, whose angelic countenance belies his satanic nature.

This is a riveting, subtle film that, with a few well planned, shocking moments, and an effectively creepy musical score that builds suspense to a crescendo, manages to thoroughly engage the viewer. If one is looking for a blood and gore fest, there is really none of that here. Instead, look to be scared out of the seat of your pants by a superb script, wonderful acting, deft direction, and a musical score that will long linger in one's memory. It is little wonder that Jerry Goldsmith, the composer of the original score for The Omen, won an Academy Award for his efforts.

DAMIEN: OMEN II - **** STARS

This sequel, released two years after the blockbuster success of "The Omen", is itself a stylish thriller. Featuring an excellent cast, it attempts to continue the momentum of the original. While having some shortcomings, the film, nonetheless, manages to entertain and shock. This is due in large part to its excellent cast and another chilling musical score by Jerry Goldsmith that is used to great effect.

This film continues the story begun in "The Omen". The Antichrist, Damien (Jonathan Scott Taylor), is here on earth and is now twelve, a little older and a little wiser to his true nature. Damien is being raised by his uncle, Richard Thorn (William Holden) and his second wife, Ann (Lee Grant).

William Holden and Lee Grant are terrific. With straightforward, sincere portrayals, they are the linchpins of this movie. Jonathan Scott Taylor is good as Damien but not particularly charismatic. Well nuanced performances are given by Richard Foxworth and Lance Hendriksen, Damien's earthly sentinels. Old timer Lew Ayres is wonderful as the ethical business man, and Sylvia Sidney is terrific as the aunt who knows that there is something wrong with Damien. Lucas Donat is excellent as Damien's cousin Mark.

There is a surprising twist at the end of this film, that is sure to catch the viewer unawares. Still, that is not enough to make this sequel comparable to the original. It lacks the subtlety and deft direction of "The Omen". While the director, Don Taylor, does a competent job of directing this sequel, some of the scenes are heavy handed, giving in to special effects that detract from the film, rather than enhance it. The opening scene is a prime example of gratuitous excess. Less is sometimes more, something that the director, Don Taylor, should remember.

OMEN III: THE FINAL CONFLICT - *** STARS

This 1981 film is the second sequel to the oustanding, 1976 gothic thriller "The Omen". The Antichrist, Damien Thorn (Sam Neill), is now all grown up and, having inherited the entire Thorn family mega fortune, is now in the process of fulfilling both his destiny and a biblical prophecy of calamitous proportions. Unfortunately for him, however, his very existence is in jeopardy, as the second coming of Christ appears imminent.

Damien is kept busy in this film. As Ambassador to England, as well as spiritual leader to a denizen of devil worshippers, he is the target of an assassination plot by a group of priests led by Father DeCarlo (Rossano Brazzi). Damien keeps busy thwarting his would be assassins, usually by consigning them to a brutal demise. He also carries on a romance that ends badly. Damien is very much aware of who he is and where his destiny lies.

This is a relatively well acted film that suffers from a somewhat weak script. Sam Neill is well cast as the grownup Damien, giving a powerful performance. Rossano Brazzi is excellent as Father DeCarlo, the priest determined to end the stranglehold that the Antichrist has on the world. Composer Jerry Goldsmith contributes to the gothic atmosphere of the film with his chillingly creepy, musical score, just as he did in "The Omen" and in the first sequel. Due to its weak script, however, the film pales in comparison to its predecessors.

OMEN IV: THE AWAKENING - ** STARS

This 1991 made for television movie was certainly trying to capitalize on the popularity of the 1976 blockbuster film "The Omen" and the two sequels it spawned. It is not really a sequel. It tries to update the original story. This time the Anti-Christ a girl named Delia.

Unfortunately, the reality is that this film ends up being nothing like the original film upon which it is based. The plot becomes convoluted and ridiculous. In updating the story line, the writer brought in some new age gobbledegook that goes nowhere. The story, which starts out promisingly enough, degenerates into total absurdity and becomes unbelievable and downright laughable. Unlike the original, which was believable because of the subtlety that was employed through its straightforward presentation and deft direction, this film is anything but. Ham handedly directed and with a poor script with which to work, the actors cast never even had a chance. Consider this film just to be a bonus feature of this collection. I did not include it in the overall rating I awarded this set.

Only "The Omen" DVD iS the only DVD in the set that can be said to be a loaded DVD with a lot of interesting features. It provides a forty six minute documetary on the making of the film, which is quite interesting, as well as a director's commentary. There is a also an intriguing, six minute short on some of the pitfalls that beset the cast and crew during the filming of the movie. The composer also has a small segment of his own. The DVD for "Damien: Omen II" features a comentary by producer Harvey Bernhard, while the DVD for "Omen III: The Final Conflict" has a commentary by the director Graham Baker. All four DVDs provide clarity of picure and sound, theatrical trailers, and subtitles in English and Spanish.
