When it was announced that Tom Cruise would play the vampire Lestat in this adaptation of Anne Rice's bestselling novel, even Rice chimed in with a highly publicized objection. The author wisely and justifiably recanted her negative opinion when she saw Cruise's excellent performance, which perceptively addresses the pain and chronic melancholy that plagues anyone cursed with immortal bloodlust. Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst are equally good at maintaining the dark and brooding tone of Rice's novel. And in this rare mainstream project for a major studio, director Neil Jordan compensates for a lumbering plot by honoring the literate, Romantic qualities of Rice's screenplay. Considered a disappointment while being embraced by Rice's loyal followers, the movie is too slow to be a satisfying thriller, but it is definitely one of the most lavish, intelligent horror films ever made. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A true classic!!!.......2007-06-04

I just want to go on record and say, this is my favorite movie of all time! (Based on movies I have seen.) I saw this movie when it was first released back in 1994, and being as young as I was, I didn't understand it.

Flash foward to now. After buying and reading all of the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice, I was instantly heel-bent on getting my hands on a copy of this movie! I was able to watch it again, and I must say I believe this movie is a true work of art, and an instant classic.

The adaptation from the novel to the on-screen story is changed ever so slightly (omitting some parts as most book-to-movies often do) but keeps the whole thing flowing seemlessly together, while also maintaining the substance the viewer needs to fully appreciate the film.

The acting is beyond amazing. Many people called into question Tom Cruise playing the character of Lestat (I am not a huge Tom Cruise fan either) but I can honestly say he did an amazing job with such an important role. Having Brad Pitt play alongside Cruise as the character of Louie only caused Cruise to step his game up as well. Pitt was still fairly young in this movie and he shows a dark energy about him that gelled naturally with the movie.

Who can forget the young Kirsten Dunst, as the loveable and innocent Claudia! A break-out role for the (at the time) young star that propelled her to future A-list status. (What if Leelee Sobieski had gotten the part?) Dunst plays her role so well, you do actually forget that she is just a child in the movie! Add the incredible acting by Antonio Banderas, and you do have a young all-star cast!

The story itself remains true to the novel. A tale of lonliness, friendship, immortality, loss, grief, and acceptance. This movie never over-does the story to make it more "Hollywood," they just seem to let the movie take a course of its own and let the characters do the story-telling. This movie will leave you with many questions, as well as a feeling that everything is settled and the end course has been set.

This movie is well worth every penny you spend to rent or buy it. I whole-heartedly recommend this movie for any and all movie fans! A true 5-star classic.

5 out of 5 stars I <3 Lestat! I <3 this movie!.......2007-06-01

Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt dont suck in this movie so dont let them scre you off. Stays true to the book and characters. I really love Lestat but Rice is a ***** that sues her fans.

5 out of 5 stars The Movie That Introduced The World to the Modern Vampire.......2007-05-20

Anne Rice created the modern vampire with her novel, and the movie did it justice. Brad Pitt is definitely what makes the movie, he plays the role of the depressed vampire Louis perfectly. This the movie also has the very young Kirsten Dunst playing the role of Claudia, and she is an amazing actress for one her age at the time. The overall film is just perfect, from location to wardrobe, it feels like a trip through time. It's just a shame that the second movie wasn't as good as this movie. The movie "Interview With the Vampire" will go down in movie history as a classic and won't be forgotten any time soon if ever.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2007-04-10

"Interview with the Vampire" is bar none, one of the best vampire films ever made. Based on the first novel in The Vampire Chronicles, by Anne Rice...Interview is directed by Oscar winner Neil Jordan ('The Crying Game') and scripted by Rice herself. I remember the first time I saw this movie, 6 years ago, and immediately reading the first book. Not only is it a great vampire film, but it's also a terrific literary adaptation. Rice only removed things from the novel that weren't completely necessary and, in doing so, created a brilliant, passionate script. The film stars Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Kirsten Dunst, Antonio Banderas, and Christian Slater. Seeing these names doesn't really shout "masterpiece." Incredibly, every actor is suited very well for their role.
The film opens in modern day New Orleans, where a vampire named Louis (Pitt) has agreed to give a reporter (Slater) an interview. The story then jumps back to the late 1700's, where Louis was a 24-year-old, suicidal plantation owner who had recently lost his wife and child in childbirth. His invitation to death is open to anyone, but it is Lestat (Cruise) who accepts his offer. Lestat kills Louis and, before he dies, offers him the chance to live forever. Louis accepts. This offer means that Louis will live forever and stay eternally youthful, but must stay away from sunlight and must feast on the blood of others. Unable to take the lives of humans (something Lestat does with ease), Louis begins feasting on rats and other animals; When Louis ends up taking the life of a young girl, Lestat turns her into a vampire and she becomes Claudia (Dunst), the daughter/lover of Louis and Lestat. Louis and Claudia become a kind of Romeo & Juliet type, but they remain complete opposites. Claudia is more like Lestat, deadly and cruel...Odd, since she hates Lestat. Jumping ahead a bit, Louis and Claudia eventually end up in Europe where they meet Armand (Banderas), the self-proclaimed "oldest living vampire" and head of a theatre troupe called The Theatre de Vampyre. I don't want to say much more about the plot to avoid spoilers. When Cruise was cast as Lestat, Rice publicly critisized the decision but later recanted her comments when she saw the film. On the DVD, in the bonus features, she rants about how good Cruise was. And he is incredible, this is one of his best performances. I've only read the first book (I'm currently reading "The Vampire Lestat"), but Cruise captures this character so well. He's charismatic, good-looking, but capable of being cruel and evil as well. Pitt delivers one of his best performances too as Louis. Louis is a complex character, who needs to a complex performance to really capture him. Pitt handled that completely; Watch his eyes throughout the film and watch how they go from young and youthful to world weary and sad. Dunst, who was thirteen when she made the film (I think), also delivers a spectacular performance. Since the character begins as a child and, by the end of the film, is still a child but with an adult mind; Dunst showed incredibly maturity in the role. Few child actors could have captured the emotion she did. I can not rave enough about this movie. Vampire/Dracula movies are the most cliched and overly used stories out there, but "Interview with the Vampire" is bursting with originality. It's not a horror film, despite it's subject matter. It's really a drama and much of Louis's story is heartbreaking. The gothic look that Jordan gave the film works very well to set the tone and atmosphere of the film. Even if you're a person who despises horror films or movies about vampires, I highly recommend this movie.

GRADE: A

5 out of 5 stars An erotic vampire tale!.......2007-04-07

This is one of my all-time favorite vampire movies. The cast led by Tom Cruise as the vampire Lestat, and Brad Pitt as the vampire Louis does an excellent job of bringing to life Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire. The costumes and sets are evocative of the respective eras the vampires live through, and the cinematography is lush and sensual, evoking the decadent lifestyle that Lestat leads...even Kirsten Dunst has a role here as a child vampire, and her famous line "I want some more" has been rendered immortal in movie history. The chemistry between Lestat [Cruise] & Louis [Pitt] is believable and in fact, they give one of their best dramatic performances in this movie. All in all, a cinematic treat.

Fran Rubel Kuzui's 1992 tongue-in-cheek vampire comedy is sugarcoated horror, an unusual mix of the cute and scary, with a splash of postmodern pop nonsense to give culture critics something to think about. Kristy Swanson plays a Valley Girl who learns she belongs to a line of ancient vampire killers. After training under the watchful eye of a mentor (Donald Sutherland), she becomes a spandex-wearing, kung-fu kicking, stake-stabbing babe and the mortal enemy of a narcissistic master vampire (Rutger Hauer). The accent is all on cheery attitude, though the action can be as authentically unnerving as any other halfway decent monster movie. Paul Reubens, formerly Pee-wee Herman, has a small role as Hauer's fanged familiar. --Tom Keogh

Description

Blonde, bouncy Buffy (Kristy Swanson) is your typical high school cheerleader-- her goal is to "marry Christian Slater and die" and nothing gets in her way when it's time to shop. But all that changes when a strange man (Donald Sutherland) informs her she's been chosen by fate to kill vampires. With the help of a romantic rebel (Luke Perry), Buffy is soon spending school nights protecting L.A. from Lothos, the Vampire King (Rutger Hauer), his sidekick. Lefty (Paul Ruebens) and their determined gang of bloodsuckers. It's everything you'd expect from a teen queen in the Valley.

2 out of 5 stars Weak.......2007-03-19

I first saw this movie when I was 10 or so at a birthday party and loved it! Now 5 years later I went out and bought it, since it was on sale (I would find out why later) and sat down with a couple of friends and got ready for some fun. Well the first thing we both saw was how horrible the dialouge was, the teenage 'slang' is exaggerated as our their actions. Even worse were the jokes, due in part to Kristy Swansons acting. The filming didn't do much justice to it either and the vampires were the most humorous villans I've ever seen.
It only gets 2 stars because of the awesome show that would be made out of it later.

2 out of 5 stars A Disappointment. . . ........2007-02-28

Man, oh man, is this movie ever a disappointment! I started watching Buffy the Series towards the middle of its 7-year run, completely drawn-in by the show's charming mix of drama, horror, and comedy. Unfortunately, this movie has little to offer a fan of the series. The acting is TOTALLY HORRENDOUS (read: VERY CHEESY)--a complete waste of talented actors like Donald Sutherland and Rutger Hauer, as well as many other big names, like Ben Afleck and Hillary Swank. So many scenes are simpy overdone, and for being a "Romantic Comedy," it's not very funny, and it's hardly romantic (ok, so that's good, right guys?). Paul Reubens and David Arquette are simply idiotic in this movie--the worst of the bunch! I can't say that it doesn't have its merits, though. It was nice to get a little glimpse into the calling of Buffy, as well as her life beforehand. However, many of the ideas placed forth about the Slayer are contradictory to the Series. For those who aren't a fan of the show, steer clear of this steaming pile of crap and check out the third season of the TV series. . . .

4 out of 5 stars Funny movie that takes a beating because of the series.......2007-01-21

This movie is funny. Unfortunately, it is dissected by the hardcore Buffy fans that were lured in by their love of the television series, and subsequently bashed.

I liked this movie back in the day, and I still enjoy it. I never watched Buffy the Vampire slayer on TV, so I don't hold a grudge against this movie as its predecessor.

If you watch this movie expecting what you saw on TV, you will be disappointed, but it's unfair to drag this movie into the mud just because it's not the same thing as the TV show.

Overall, it's a funny movie that will give you a few laughs and that you'll enjoy, as long as you don't watch it expecting Buffy from the WB series.

4 out of 5 stars I liked it, what's all the fuss.......2006-10-18

This was supposed to be a comedy. Many who know the series were disappointed when they rented or bought the movie. We saw the movie first and were skepical about the series. Well, we enjoy both. If you have trouble with the continuity, or lack there of, between the movie and the series, don't watch Star Trek.

As noted critic Pauline Kael observed, "... this first important film of the vampire genre has more spectral atmosphere, more ingenuity, and more imaginative ghoulish ghastliness than any of its successors." Some really good vampire movies have been made since Kael wrote those words, but German director F.W. Murnau's 1922 version remains a definitive adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Created when German silent films were at the forefront of visual technique and experimentation, Murnau's classic is remarkable for its creation of mood and setting, and for the unforgettably creepy performance of Max Schreck as Count Orlok, a.k.a. the blood-sucking predator Nosferatu. With his rodent-like features and long, bony-fingered hands, Schreck's vampire is an icon of screen horror, bringing pestilence and death to the town of Bremen in 1838. (These changes of story detail were made necessary when Murnau could not secure a copyright agreement with Stoker's estate.) Using negative film, double-exposures, and a variety of other in-camera special effects, Murnau created a vampire classic that still holds a powerful influence on the horror genre. (Werner Herzog's 1978 film Nosferatu the Vampyre is both a remake and a tribute, and Francis Coppola adopted many of Murnau's visual techniques for Bram Stoker's Dracula.) Seen today, Murnau's film is more of a fascinating curiosity, but its frightening images remain effectively eerie. --Jeff Shannon

Description

The greatest horror film of all! A long time ago in middle Europe, a decrepit, forbidding castle stood. Casting an ominous shadow over the townspeople who dare not look upon it, the unholy dwelling is home to one Count Orlok (Max Schreck), an undead night creature with a taste for human blood. Showcasing the extremely eerie Schreck, "Nosferatu" is the first screen adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic novel "Dracula," stylistically directed by the legendary F.W. Murnau. Now available in this gorgeous newly remastered and rescored by The Silent Orchestra in 5.1 audio.

5 out of 5 stars Vampire mold.......2007-06-27

For anyone interested in horror films, this is a must to add to your collection. The style has become the mold for countless generations of vampire movies, up to and including Bela Lugosi's version (His is the definitive modern version). The dark cinematography is enhanced by the otherworldly makeup. It's only after a few minutes that you realize that it is a silent movie, and you really don't care. A later remake with Klaus Kinski was made, but it hardly comes close, although it gets kudos for its homage to the original by keeping it as close to the original plot, with filler scenes added to make up for the short movie length. I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Nosferatu.......2007-06-18

Still the eeriest and most atmospheric of all the Dracula films, Murnau's "Nosferatu" gave the German director an opportunity to explore experimental visual techniques--like stop-motion and negative exposures--in bringing Bram Stoker's version of the legend to the big screen. But his biggest coup was in casting the mysterious Max Schreck (rumored to be another actor's alias) in the title role. With his rat-like features, ghastly pointed ears, and long, talon-like fingers, Schreck doesn't seem at all like a creature from our planet. Murnau completed the effect by filming on location in Eastern Europe. The result is a Gothic chiller you simply can't miss.

4 out of 5 stars creepy and creepy.......2007-06-08

4 out of 5 stars Different soundtracks make big diffeence........2007-06-08

"Disgruntled" refers to a previous review and not Nosferatu.

There are a number of different "versions" of this movie distributed by different companies. I bought the Keno version, and the transfer and tint quality are excellent. However, I had previously seen the movie with a pipe organ arrangement and was dissapointed with the orchestral arrangements on the Keno DVD. Not that there is anything bad with the music, it's just that the pipe organ creates a creepier mood for me. I then bought the Image companies offering and am very pleased with the pipe organ soundtrack, though the DVD transfer is not quite as good as the Keno. I would have given 5 stars if the Keno video and the Image audio were on the same DVD. Oh, and the audio commentary is admirable in ponting out the symbolism and stlye of the film. great movie.

4 out of 5 stars Quite good overall. .......2007-05-12

For a film released in 1922, the archivists in Italy did a very good job in their judicious splicing together of the few existing prints of this film (which are of varying quality) to produce the best possible transfer that we shall probably ever see. However, both musical accompaniments have their weak points. Still, I would recommend this film to any silent film fan or discerning fans of films based (or in this case "inspired") by DRACULA.

In this chilling, atmospheric German film from 1932, director Carl Theodor Dreyer favors style over story, offering a minimal plot that draws only partially from established vampire folklore. Instead, Dreyer emphasizes an utterly dreamlike visual approach, using trick photography (double exposures, etc.) and a fog-like effect created by allowing additional light to leak onto the exposed film. The result is an unsettling film that seems to spring literally from the subconscious, freely adapted from the Victorian short story Carmilla by noted horror author Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, about a young man who discovers the presence of a female vampire in a mysterious European castle. There's more to the story, of course, but it's the ghostly, otherworldly tone of the film that lingers powerfully in the memory. Dreyer maintains this eerie mood by suggesting horror and impending doom as opposed to any overt displays of terrifying imagery. Watching Vampyr is like being placed under a hypnotic trance, where the rules of everyday reality no longer apply. As a splendid bonus, the DVD includes The Mascot, a delightful 26-minute animated film from 1934. Created by pioneering animator Wladyslaw Starewicz, this clever film--in which a menagerie of toys and dolls springs to life--serves as an impressive precursor to the popular Wallace & Gromit films of the 1990s. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Carl Theodor Dreyer's eerie horror classic stars Julian West as a visitor to a remote inn under the spell of an aged, bloodthristy female vampire. Extremely atmospheric, this rare gem delivers a decided chill.

4 out of 5 stars A story with flour power........2007-07-01

Allan Grey (Julian West) has a fertile imagination and we get to fertile along with him. He is on vacation. He chooses a strange building to vacate in. Its his first night and he hears spooky sounds (mostly in German) which forces him to lock his door. A mysterious man comes into his room any way and delivers a package. It is only to be opened on the stranger's death. Things only get weirder and as with any mystery it is always the last person you suspect. Eventually the story comes to a "Grinding halt."

Well designed "they may be vampires" story. All the elements are there. If you miss the introduction you will be lost in the montage. Actually considering that this film is over 75 years old and has had a rough shelf life, we are lucky to see what there is. Now the question is if this is re-mastered will it lose its patina as rare coins do after a good dose of Bon Ami.

4 out of 5 stars To watch late and alone, preferably on Halloween.......2007-02-07

A must-see, unforgettable German film from 1932, this one is mostly a silent film, with a minimum of audio effects when needed. Loosely derived from Sheridan Lefanu's Carmilla (the original "Lesbian vampire" story), Vampyr is like a surrealist nightmare. Spooky.

3 out of 5 stars Transfer very good --- but it's not authentic!.......2006-08-09

This is my technical review of this version. I HATE IT.
Ok, first of all it's visually superior to other versions I've seen, which have been "over exposed". The audio seems compressed somehow. It's necessary to turn the volume WAY UP to hear it! Another reviewer was dead-on with the subtitles. When they DO use them... they're awful!! Other versions I've seen, use a small, Arial-type font, with NO background. MUCH easier to read. Then there are the opening credits. THESE ARE NOT AUTHENTIC. Again, in other versions, the opening credits are in German, and not produced with computer graphics!! Then there are the scenes in which the actor is reading from a book. The cut-aways on this version to a "bright" screen with that awful computer written text are ridiculous and distracting. Those are the issues I have with this version. I cannot say where you might find a more original copy... my guess would be from "Sinister Cinema". A version I rented some 20 years ago was a public domain release, from some no-name company, which again did not display the contrast that you'll enjoy on this version, but at least had some authenticity to it, and doesn't appear it was doctored by a geek with a mouse!

5 out of 5 stars An amateur takes the winess stand.......2006-07-13

The Gothic Fonts ARE hard to read. The scratchy soundtrack and dark fading-in-and-out pictures with funny squiggles are different from watching MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 3 on DVD -- if I ever do so.
But the fonts are why God made 'pause' buttons. And the human brain is the best filter ever created for squiggles & Rice Crispies soundtracks.
The movie is wonderful.

Amazon.com essential video

4 out of 5 stars creepy and creepy.......2007-06-08

a little long for me but good to have for nostalga's sake. very creepy at times. a classic.

With the dribble we get on TV on both sides of the pond this show is a gem amongst the tripe. It is always the best ones that get axed. After one season of Vampire High three DVD's with the first 10 episodes on. DVD 1- First four episodes edited into a movie format, DVD 2- Three mpre eps and the same for DVD 3.

This show has style, charm and above all good acting, a rare treat on the box today. The show runs smoothly from beginning to end, usually having an episode about one particular subject that is resolved by the end but also the longer running storylines of romance, deception and evil.

Vampire High was indeed a ground breaking show, not only for the style which shone but for the character break down and involvment with the audience.

4 out of 5 stars Vampire High review.......2006-03-01

I thoroughly enjoyed this series on TV and would very much like to own it all on DVD (unfortunately this disk is all that's available at the moment).

The basic premise is appealing: a small group of young vampires are given sanctuary at an exclusive boarding school to both protect them from the war between the two opposing vampire 'clans', the Fury and the Elders, and to 'humanise' them in preparation for living safely amongst humans. The series explores how the vampires and the school's principal (who is an unusual man himself) try to accomplish this. At the same time a larger group of young human students, all with problems of their own, lives and learns in the above-ground part of the school, and are unaware of the vampires living below them - until one of the vampires falls in love with one of the humans. And to complicate matters further, one of his fellow vampires is in love with him...

The series has its flaws - there are a number of inconsistencies and some considerable plot-holes, and the acting is occasionally uneven - but on the whole it's a wonderful watch, oddly gentle, perceptive and thought-provoking. This DVD contains the first four (of 26) episodes excellently combined into a full-length film, without losing any of the details of the series. I really hope the rest are also released on DVD.

    5 out of 5 stars Great short-lived series.......2005-03-26

I absolutely adore this show! I ordered this DVD blind because I'd heard of the show before and was very interested in it. Amazon is the only place that sells it and it's dirt cheap so I figured, why not? I am so glad I did. The plot is nothing that special, but I really enjoyed some of the mythology they made up for the show and other well known ideas that they also incorporated into it. I'm also a sucker for Romeo and Juliet type romances that involve vampires, so it's kind of natural that this show would be right up my alley. Although it was obviously made for an early to mid teen audience, I'm in my early 20s and still liked it. The DVD presentation is nothing special, just the first four episodes edited into a 90 minute movie. Six more episodes are scheduled for release in May on two seperate discs.

1 out of 5 stars Teen Angst as Vampires.......2005-03-26

This was a well produced yawn. The budget's all there, but the plot is really dull - a group of teen vampires is sent to an exclusive school so that they can learn how to 'blend-in' with human society - to stop feeding frenzies so that they don't get caught - so because of this there's very little vampire action - aside from a couple of times they face off against each other baring their fangs.

If you're after a film about vampires being vampires - this is not it. If you're after a film about teens being teens - then maybe this is for you - teens who just happen to have fangs.
