Description
After a daring escape from a psychiatric hospital, the Stepfather (Terry O'Quinn, TV's JAG), assumes a new identity and sets out in search of another family to marry into -- and kill! He finds the perfect victims: attractive, recently divorced Carol Grayland (Meg Foster -- THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK) and her teenage son, Todd (Jonathan Brandis -- HART'S WAR). Posing as a warm and caring family therapist named Gene, he appears to be the ideal second husband and father for these two lonely people. But Carol's best friend Matty (Caroline Williams -- HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS) suspects that Gene is too good to be true. And when Carol's first husband returns to attempt reconciliation, he triggers Gene's fear of discovery, sending him off on a psychotic killing spree. Gene secretly eliminates everyone who stands in his way, until the day arrives to marry Carol, one of the most unforgettable -- and horrifying -- wedding days ever filmed.

    5 out of 5 stars A House Doesn't Make A Home.......2007-04-01

In Ken Loach's stark but richly rewarding "Sweet Sixteen", we follow events leading up to the sixteenth birthday of the resilient but reckless Liam as he tries to prepare a life and a home in anticipation of his incarcerated but soon-to-be-released mother's return.

Liam is portrayed by the perfectly cast Martin Compston, whose emotive face can seem so youthfully vibrant yet at the same time so weathered and world-weary. And apt visage aside, this first-time actor here proves himself to be one of the great young performers emerging in the cinematic world of late - his pitch-perfect portrayal of Liam is right up there with recent starmaking roles turned in by the likes of Ryan Gosling and Joseph Gordon-Leavitt.

Liam is joined in this film by his best friend and literal partner-in-crime Pinball (who's certainly no wizard, although is perhaps so named because of the way he careeningly drives the "borrowed" vehicles in which he joyrides). Pinball is ably portrayed by William Ruane, another previously unknown local who is also quite a find. Together the two boys try to find ways to survive and thrive amidst an environment in which the odds are greatly stacked against them.

The film is actually shot in Greenock, just down the Clyde river from Glasgow, a town where almost all the jobs have moved elsewhere, leading to few "legitimate" ways to earn money. A place where once-lovely but now dilapidated tower blocks are inhabited in equal measure by junkies and families. As Loach himself states in the appropriately spare commentary track (where long silences abound), it's a location where the visually spectacular scenery "contrasts rather sadly with the quality of life of many of the people who live there."

In "Sweet Sixteen", we find the legendary director's usually strident political overtones to be toned down a tad, his muted message blending in nicely with the drab browns, greys and greens of the bleak and beautiful Glaswegian cityscape. The film shows us, subtly yet firmly, how the most promising and gifted attributes in souls young and old alike can sometimes be squelched and squandered by systemic and structural societal inequities. And though it can be depressing to take in at times, this film is ultimately breathtaking to behold, and the most remarkable thing about Compston's performance is that he portrays Liam so winningly that you actually root for him to be successful in even the most questionable of deeds. All of which makes for a highly recommended viewing experience.

5 out of 5 stars Reality check for society.......2007-01-25

Think about this movie and how it applies to real life situations? An abusive family, mother in jail, the kids being in foster homes. All "Liam" wanted was a fresh start for his family once his mother got out of jail without her abusive boyfriend "stan". He had to do law breaking things to get the money to provide his mother with a place to live and as you can tell once she gets out she doesn't appreciate it. This movie is a wake up call to a lot of people out there that think these types of situations only happen in movies. At the end of the movie we see what lengths he goes to to try his best to get his mother back. I will just say the ending is very emotional and is very real for a lot of kids out there with a family like that.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet But Very Bleak.......2006-09-11

Ken Loach's film ends on Liam's sixteenth birthday, and it is probably not much of a spoiler to say that aside from being around to make sixteen, Liam's life -- both ahead and behind -- is nowhere near "sweet." But he is, for almost every minute of the film as he tries to build a life for himself and his mother once she is released from prison. Problem is that every choice he makes toward reaching that simple but quixotic goal is bad, spiraling him deeper into crime and danger even as the trappings of the dream are attained. Young Faust in Scotland is what we have here and a Faust further shackled by an inability to recognize who's loyal to him.

Well-acted by a cast of mostly non-actors and thoroughly gritty, Sweet Sixteen captures a part of the world with little hope and few ways of escape. The moments of peace and happiness along the way, while real and not infrequent, are all trapped in that bleak reality. Sweet Sixteen gets that world unforgettably right. BTW, the DVD offers the option to watch with subtitles. Unless you are familiar with working class Scottish accents, you probably should do so.

    4 out of 5 stars Effective & Moving.......2006-05-14

This movie was spartan and bleak. It revolved around the life of a boy who loved his mother immensely and who would do anything just to bring the family back together once again. The mother was in jail for a crime that she didn't commit. The father was a small-time drug-dealer and she took the fall for him. The son hated the father for what he did to his mother. As he was brought up in a social estate housing, he was forced to grow up very quickly and street-smart too. He had a best friend that was also his partner in crime selling cheap cigarettes. Suddenly, he had a bright idea of getting his mother an after-prison gift and he concocted a business strategy of selling drugs, drugs he actually stole from his estranged father. As his ambition got wider, he started to tread on the toes of established drug-dealer. Subsequently, it spiralled out of control. In the end, we would come to understand the poignant meaning of sweet sixteen. The movie touched on the inability of running away from the vicious cycle, family violence and early parenting. There was a strong dynamics between the boy and his sister, Chantelle who willed herself to get an education for the sake of her young boy. A very strong movie that's handled brilliantly by Loach. No extras in the DVD but recommended viewing.

5 out of 5 stars Ken Loach Does it Again!.......2005-07-07

This is a must see film. There is so much truth and honesty to the way Mr Loach presents his projects that you really FEEL so much while you are watching these people on the screen. The fact that he uses unknown and untested actors and provides the veiwer with such a rich and true experience is just mind boggeling. Martin Compston is amazing, I hope to see more of him in the future.

4 out of 5 stars Maybe they disappointed him?!.......2007-04-11

    The Stepfather returns!

This was a pretty good sequel, I thought.
There are not many times when a sequel is nearly as good as the original, but I think that Jeff Burr pulled it off nicely!

What I like about this one is that the films picks up where the first finished. Jerry (well, no-one really knows his real identity), is locked away. He soon escapes and resumes back to his old ways of finding another family.

It's kind of a love-hate relationship with this character, because as intense and as much of a psychopath as he can become, Terry O'Quinn, makes the character really likeable in a twisted way.
At heart, he has family values, and he wants to live the american dream of the perfect, loving family, but each time, his new potenial family goes wrong and things end badly.

That said, it's a fun and entertaining movie.

Terry turns in another wonderful, yet psychotic performance (I say that with a smile on my face!), and another excellent performance by Meg Foster and Johnathan Brandis (R.I.P).

A must see- because you wouldn't want to disappoint him, would you?

3 out of 5 stars First movie was a hard act to follow.......2006-09-05

...but at least Terry O'Quinn stuck around for this one. Jerry Blake's latest fiancee in this film is played by Meg Foster, an actress who has always given me the creeps for some reason. I was actually rooting for Jerry Blake to kill her.

FOR SOME STRANGE REASON this sequel is on DVD and the original is not. Go figure. Are the ownership or distribution rights to the first one in dispute or something?

The first one RULES! Great psychological horror and a career-defining performance by O'Quinn. And director Joseph Ruben would go on to make some other great films, including "Return To Paradise" with Anne Heche and Vince Vaughn.

As for "Stepfather 3"... ignore it except for the fact that O'Quinn's replacement is Robert Wightman who actually does a very very good job replicating O'Quinn's mannerisms, body language, facial expressions, speech patterns, voice, etc. It is more imitation than acting, maybe, but he's very good at it.

    4 out of 5 stars A Surprising Good Sequel...Terry O'Quinn Owns Role..........2005-11-01

THE STEPFATHER was one of the most minor but great horror films to come out in 1987. Terry O'Quinn fit the role perfectly, and the rest of the cast, while not all filling their roles to a tee, nonetheless supported him well, making his character all the more believable in his psychotic rage. Now, I saw STEPFATHER 3 before this one, and I wasn't impressed with the third one and don't plan on owning it anytime soon. But there was one reason I bought this DVD and decided to give STEPFATHER 2 a chance: Terry O'Quinn.

You might all remember the end of the first film, as Jerry Blake (O'Quinn's character in part 1) brutally attacked his wife and daughter, having been disappointed that they are not "perfect". He was starting to make another life for himself, but he failed and ended up being stabbed at the end by Stephanie. Did the Stepfather survive the chaos? You better believe he did, thanks to some surgery and healing of medicine. I was hoping for good things with STEPFATHER 2.

We pick up with the Stepfather (in the first frame still Jerry Blake) in a psychiatric institution, a little hair loss and a dream of the events from the prior film. We find that the Stepfather still likes to build houses out of wood, but not so much birdhouses anymore. He's seeing a psychiatrist and at first you feel bad for him because he looks like a poor schmuck the first time he sits in for a session. Ah, but you know by now this guy means business, and he makes a plan to escape, and he does...killing the psychiatrist and bludgeoning the security guard in his wake. He walks off the ground while in the background the alarm at the facility sounds off, marking an escape and panic ensues...all while our Stepfather calmly strolls off the grounds a free man. Now Jerry decides its time for a change, so he checks into a hotel, gets his hair back and changes look again, and starts to plan his next move (I was laughing because the bellboy never saw the picture on the paper...is it that obvious you're serving a killer?). He sees a dream house show on tv, and Palm Meadows seems like a good place to land his next life. He also picks his next identity in the form of family therapist Gene Clifford.

We pick up sometime later down in California near L.A., and Gene is looking at a house with beautiful real estate agent, Carol Grayland. After mentioning that she is divorced, and with son, well, our Stepfather is up to his old tricks again. He starts a session with divorced/troubled women and things seem to start off right for Gene. He has a new home; he meets a new woman; he even gets admiration from her son, Todd. Things seem to be going good, and even Carol's best friend, Matty (the sexy Caroline Williams), likes Gene. However, things suddenly change when Carol's ex-husband shows up to reconcile...and that just isn't sitting well with Gene, and instantly it triggers a reaction. He goes to the garage and starts cutting and throwing wood on his trusty saw-board device, and we see echoes of the first film in his presence of anger. But when snoopy Matty shows up looking around, she begins to suspect Gene isn't really who he claims to be. She starts to snoop through his mail, eventually finding a "letter" that triggers her suspicion confirmation. All the while, Gene kills off Phil after meeting with him to talk about his reconciliation with Carol. He checks Phil out of his hotel, puts his things in the trunk with his body, and then drives his car to a junkyard smashing it around and then casually leaving whistling his fave Camptown Races (this is going to be a fatal flaw later). Things seem to get better again, until Matty finds out about Gene and then summons him for a meeting in the park, which ultimately leaves our stepboy a bit off. He makes love to Carol before leaving to kill off Matty and then brings back a bottle of wine. He sets Matty's death up like a suicide, but a blind man is the only witness to Gene's diabolical deed. Things start to go downhill a bit and Gene begins to worry his wedding day is in jeopardy. And on the big guy's big day, things do take a turn for the worse. After Carol sees the wine bottles, and then hears her son whistling Camptown Races, Gene is exposed, and the mayhem ensues, with the Stepfather once again being killed by a courageous child and a strong but battered mother. Poor Stepfather, his intentions are admirable but his methods of getting there are far from conventional.

The acting in the movie is mostly typical, but Terry O'Quinn is once again masterful as the evil stepdad out for another "perfect" family. He conveys the character so well...he was built for this role and, thanks to his performance, the movie is memorable. Meg Foster and Jonathan Brandis are also good, and surprisingly, Brandis isn't annoying...the kid can act and he put on a good show. Meg Foster's eyes are creepy, but she's pretty so you'll forgive that. The violence isn't obvious, but it's there and what we see still makes you cringe. The movie as a whole isn't as gripping as the first, but it still makes a very good sequel...entertaining, suspenseful at times, and never cartoon-ish.

STEPFATHER was an entertaining cult hit. STEPFATHER 2 manages to convey some of the first's power and execution, and thanks to Terry O'Quinn, manages to be memorable for the most part. Sadly, O'Quinn would not return for the third entry, and so the pale Robert Wightman was chosen to replace him. Avoid the third sequel like the plague and, instead, watch the first film, and this entertaining sequel. But in watching, you'd better "make room for daddy!"

4 out of 5 stars STAY WITH THE FORMULA.......2005-10-17

Stepfather was a vastly underrated Horror film that dealt with the psychotic Terry O' Quinn (one of my favorite actors) once again trying to find the perfect family and the perfect life. We never really know his chracter's true name as he constantly adapts new alias's to find new families to move into and eventually kill. This time he escapes from the mental facility where he was placed after the events in the first film.

He takes on the alias of Dr. Gene Clifford, a marriage counselor and moves to an idyllic subdivision. He eventually sets his sights on widow Carol Grayland (Meg Foster) and her son Todd (Jonathan Brandis). Once again Gene seems like the perfect dad but this time some of the neighbors and friends of Carol begin to suspect something is not right. Gene responds by killing anyone who gets in his way and tries to interfere with his perfect life.

The film basically follows the same formula that the first did but that's ok because it's a solid formula and O'Quinn is so very watchable in everything he does. Meg Foster is far better in her role as the wife this time than the bland Shelly Hack was in the first. While Stepfather II doesn't break any new ground it is an above average psycho-thriller

3 out of 5 stars pretty good sequel to a classic........2005-03-14

Lame that this inferior sequel is on DVD before the eerie original is.I know it'll be out sometime, but here's the first sequel. It's a decent story, but it seems TOO similar, and the creepy tone of the original is missing.Still,it ain't bad,and Terry O'quinn is great. The dvd looks and sounds nice and has alterate scenes and a commentary track.

A year before he played his first Quidditch match as Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe cast his spell on audiences as young David Copperfield in this stellar British miniseries based on Charles Dickens's classic novel. Vastly superior to the 2000 American-made miniseries (which gave us Michael "Kramer" Richards as Micawber), this impeccable production, originally broadcast on ExxonMobil Masterpiece Theatre, is an embarrassment of riches, with a cast that includes Oscar® winner Maggie Smith (Radcliffe's Potter costar) as the indomitable Aunt Betsey, Oscar nominee Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings) as sadistic teacher Mr. Creakle, a wonderful Bob Hoskins (Oscar nominee for Mona Lisa) as the debt-ridden Micawber, Trevor Eve as David's loathsome stepfather Mr. Murdstone (he believes in "firmness" with a vengeance), and Nicholas Lyndhurst as the scheming clerk Uriah Heap. Holding his own with this formidable ensemble is Ciaran McMenamin as the adult David, whose soap opera existence spans an idyll-shattered childhood, unscrupulous villains, tragic romance, and a hard-won happily-ever-after. Rich with incident and populated by some of literature's most memorable characters, this production does full justice to one of Dickens's most beloved and oft-told sagas. --Donald Liebenson

    Description

Dickens' most autobiographical book, David Copperfield tells the moving story of David's journey from birth to maturity, a journey which links his life with some of the most colorful, extraordinary characters including the flamboyant Mr. Micawber, eccentric Aunt Betsy Trotwood, the kindly Peggotty family, the cruel Murdstones, the ever so humble Uriah Heep, and loyal, loving Agnes Wicklow. David navigates through a life fraught with hardships and challenges, unexpected joys and even love.

1 out of 5 stars Dickens Must have turned over in his grave.......2007-06-27

A terrible adaptation of the novel. This movie cannot begin to capture the true essence of David Copperfield. Poorly scripted, casted and directed. Ideas are conveyed in the movie which aren't even in the book while major concepts and instances are blatantly ignored. If you respect Dickens work then don't buy this movie. You'll be sorely cheated if you do.

5 out of 5 stars Dickens would be proud .......2007-04-22

By enlarge, a refreshing aspect of this film is the quality of acting and the casting for the parts of Dickens characters. Daniel Radcliffe (of Harry Potter fame) does a good job of young David Copperfield, seeming to bring the innocence and mistrust to the boy who hopes for a better future. Maggie Smith does a superb job of playing David's aunt, Betsey Trotwood, capturing the dimensionality expected of a character who first rejects, then accepts David into her life.

The film exemplifies the mood of Dickens' work. David endures quite a troublesome and painful existence as a child, either being neglected or treated maliciously by his cold, callus stepfather, Mr. Murdstone. After David also has difficulties in school, and then is robbed and left penniless, he takes a chance on his aunt for help. There is a wonderful scene where Betsey has a confrontation with Murdstone, who is trying to gain custody of David, and ends up telling him to leave.

There are other characters who represent bright spots in David's life, such as Clara Peggotty (David's nanny), Mr. Peggotty, Mr. Micawber, and David's true love, Agnes Wickfield. Agnes represents a true soul for David's troubled life, as she listens to David's concerns and is always there for him in his times of desperation, even while he is married to the child-like Dora.

A prevalent aspect of Dickens-based works is the idea that those who have difficult stations in life can rise up to bigger and better things if they struggle along and find their way. We see this subject captured in David Copperfield, and the bitter aspects of his life are all a part of the journey to overcoming, and having hope for the future.

If there is one beef with this film, it is the pacing. As one reviewer mentioned, the second part of the film tends to wane a little, and doesn't quite have the same impact as the first half. Still, this doesn't take away from the over all impact of the film.

Dickens once said that, of all novels, David Copperfield was his "child," because it was close to home, and nearest to his life. I think he would be satisfied with this film effort. I think you will too!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite movies.......2007-03-27

Yes it's another story about an orphan but who would not like this movie?
Daniel Radcliff was such a darling thing.

4 out of 5 stars Much better than expected.......2007-01-18

David Copperfield is quite simply a phenonmenal book. It shows Dickens at his best in creating characters and a plot that masterfully combines comedy, tragedy, intrigue and the joys and sorrows of life. Like other reviewers, I approached this film adaptation concerned that it simply would not be able to maintain those high standards.

I was pleasantly surprised. The casting was very appropriate, I can't think of one character that was not well portrayed. The filming and music were engaging and the sets very well chosen and designed. And the film moved along at a good pace. (Even my seven year old enjoyed it the whole way through.) To keep the film to 3 hours some characters and incidents were left out, but this was done sensitively so the story does not seem at all disjointed.

I have one criticism that prevented me giving 5 stars. Author Russell Baker appeared giving quite a good introduction to the story. But why, oh why did he have to pop up again just before the final music/credits? Literally, just before the movie ends it fades out, he appears and talks about it for a few minutes, and then it fades back to the final music. This was totally inappropriate and if we had not fast-forwarded him in disbelief, it would have stolen something from the atmosphere and sweet after-taste of an extremely engaging and heart-tugging production.

Go ahead and buy this version. You will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars It will break your heart and mend it well again!.......2006-12-10

It was with great hesitation that I purchased this film, feeling that this rendition would be less desirous than others that came before. But as the opening credits began, I watch as if I had never heard the story told. The cast is exquisite, from the young David Radcliffe, with his insightful ability to contain emotion in such young eyes, to the infamous Maggie Smith, whom always rises to the occasion.

I went to my duty of watching this film, completely stocked in popcorn and soda, but alas, it seems that I forgot the tissues.

Each character was beautifully displayed, with background and wholeness that is lacking in so many other movies based upon the works of countless, talented authors. But with this film, you feel as though you love them as well. What good can come of the story, if you do not know the people in them?

I suspect that you will in time, hold them dear to your own heart as closely as "Davie" holds them to his. You will wonder of the intentions of David Copperfield's childhood friends, and delighted in the new friends that come into his life.

It is a movie, I will watch again, and again, if for nothing more than to visit my old friends!

I'd never heard of Jim Sikora who is the director for this atmospheric and engaging film. But Lara Phillips will melt your heart with her beautiful performance, i can't understand why this talented beauty is not starring in more pictures. She does have a small role in the film "Road to Perdition" as Ruby a waitress. Lara looks like a young Susan Sarandon, and seems to have Susan's talent for acting. The whole cast in this film are great, the lead character played by an actor called Jeff Strong is the perfect vessel to hang such a complex emotional portrail of lonliness and an inability to know oneself, but this is where this film scores big, dealing with human frailty and the strengh of women. If you liked / loved Patricia Arquette in "True Romance" then please give this film your time.
I'm looking forward to hearing Lara, who is on the commentary track, along with the rest of the cast and the director. Barrel Entertainment should be commended for putting in the love for this release, extra's galore.

5 out of 5 stars We Just Need A Little Order.......2007-07-02

What a shame. "THE STEPFATHER" is easily one of the slickest, smartest, and most underrated slasher flicks of all time, let alone the 80's. Good Acting, Direction, Script, Score, etc... and you would think with the current popularity of Terry O'Quinn(LOST), Embassy, or whoever owns this picture, would take full advantage and release it on a 2 disc "20 year anniversary edition". BUT NOOOooo, the big-wigs at DVD Headquarters feel what we really need on DVD are the reruns of "MAUDE". Sweet.
Don't make me go Jerry Blake on you. Release "THE STEPFATHER" on Region 1 DVD. FATHER KNOWS BEST!

5 out of 5 stars This is my view on why I believe this is not on dvd yet.......2006-09-04

First off, this is just what I think and it may not be correct.
Part two was owned by HBO and they have rights to put out the DVD by their company which they did. Now embassy, "if I am correct" is owned by Sony but I am not for sure. I believe they would have to get a company to get the rights to have this before it goes to dvd because I have not seen a movie yet from embassy on dvd. There are several embassy VHS movies out there but not as of yet on dvd. I maybe wrong though. I think Saturday the 14th was embassy but I have to check in on it but it is on dvd. Again dont quote me on why this is not released on dvd but I believe that a company other than embassy has to get the rights to put their name on the dvd.

5 out of 5 stars Terry O'Quinn makes his mark.......2006-06-26

This is one of the best thrillers to emerge from the 1980's. It's got assured direction from Joseph Reuben. An excellent script by Donald E. Westlake. And an absolutely mesmerizing performance from Terry O'Quinn, who invests his character with enough repressed fury to make most screen psychos look like Mr Rogers.

The film starts out with a real sense of style as O'Quinn washes his bloody hands in a bathroom sink then proceeds to alter his appearance drastically before walking downstairs to his murdered family; its a startling and creepy beginning and the rest of the film is as stylish and well done. I think its biggest strength is the well-developed psychopathology of Terry O'Quinn's character;his behavior actually makes sense in terms of his madness; this is a refreshing change of pace from most films of this type, where the killers have zero motivation and are just plot-devices.

5 out of 5 stars best horror ever.......2006-03-17

Suspense/horror, what's the difference, usually suspense is scarier, while horror has wereworves and big alligators. This movie has stuck with me forever. From the first shot of this movie, which brings you into the creepiest looking house ever put on film, to the last shot of this film, which I won't give away. Maybe it's just cause I am so die hard kungfu, but this had a lot of elements of those style of movies. If you have seen Lost you will recogzize the stepfather and you will never know him as Lock again. He puts on one of the most powerful performanves I have ever seen. It's rare that a guy can look that convincingly scary in such a low-budget movie.

I also have to back up what the other reviewer asked about this not being on dvd, as one of my personal favorites ever I want AT LEAST a commentary from director or maybe the stepfather himself, woudn't that be something.

5 out of 5 stars one of the creepiest thrillers ever made...........2006-03-05

sharp, detailed, scary, creepy, well acted.
      music score is great.
acting by the daughter is fantastic...as well as the stepfather.
shelley hack is dreadful in this film, yet still very attractive.one of director ruben's best.
