Surprisingly good.......2007-04-21
What a wonderfully produced film. I watched it only 'cause I was sick home for the day, and expected just another lousy slasher flick. That's not this film at all.
The music is wonderful, the set design establishes a dreary mood of war in the trenches, and the acting is really quite good.
What I liked best is that this movie can be viewed in so many different ways _ horror film, ghost story, political metaphor. I have no idea what the writer had in mind putting this screenplay together, but sometimes the most seemingly simple stories can be the most complex. This is a good film.
Excellent period horror film.......2006-12-28
I really loved this movie!!! It was very different than many horror films because it took place in a German bunker during war time. Probably the reason that it was soo scarey and chilling to me, is I wonder how many "old bunkers" that exist now actually are haunted. What stories could be told from them? It did remind me of Dead Birds in which the past does repeat itself over and over again. I highly recommed this movie to anyone that wants to see something different than the "run of the mill teen scream horror" films.
Excellent mood thriller...very chilling.......2006-11-12
I'm impressed. I watched the first half-hour of this movie and was kinda into it, but not as much as I would have liked to have been. Then I came back a day later and watched the last hour and was pretty much glued to the TV. See, what this movie does is what so many modern horror movies don't do, which is create a sustained creepy mood level throughout. It makes you feel like at any moment something could happen even when nothing much of note is. And THAT is what horror is all about.
Another thing that greatly adds to the mood is that background "void" music. It's like a creepy little brief wind/void sound that really adds to the environment perfectly. I think it's one of the main reasons I was so drawn into the movie. Excellent choice of background sound.
I cannot forget to praise the actual look and feel of the trenches as well. That was the other mood grabber. The trench is almost like its own character.
The special effects are what they are. They're not insulting but not the greatest. But they're used so little it doesn't matter. And since this whole thing isn't in real time anyway that can be used as a crutch reason why. They shouldn't ruin anything for anybody.
I liked the ending a lot and I love the psychology behind it. This is definitely one of the better horror flicks I've seen lately. Kudos to the director for sucking me in and not letting me go.
Very Well Made.......2006-11-04
This is how horror films should be made. DEATHWATCH comes with a very smart
script, an excellent cast, beautiful cinematography, and a very spooky
atmosphere, dripping with dread. Horror films have a bad reputation because
most of them just ain't made this well.
In addition to the above positive points, this film knows when to be subtle
and when to shock... and the shocking moments do the job perfectly. Yes, it
is gory in parts, but the violence tells the story... it isn't there for
empty shock value.
The only trouble I have with this film is the CGI. I'm not a fan of CGI
in general... but when it is anything less than perfect, I am VERY annoyed
by it. The CGI in DEATHWATCH is above average. It is only in a few shots
of the film. But still, it is the only real "flaw" I can draw attention
to. And no, the CGI did not dilute the overall power of this very
impressive horror film.
Bottom line... If you like horror movies and/or if you are into war films,
DEATHWATCH is brilliantly executed and well worth your money.
soldiers wrestling with the demons of war...or something worse?.......2006-04-18
This film is a classic example of how to build an almost unbearable sense of doom and claustrophobia;the trenches of WWI have never looked as wet and miserable in a film; the production design is a major contributor to the effectiveness of DEATHWATCH. The baffling maze of trenches--a nightmare bog of corpses,razor-wire, rats and diseased mud--is such an evocative setting that one wishes the film were all the way up to the challenge of delivering the best horror film in a war setting ever. (Sorry, Michael Mann, but The Keep didn't quite do it) Sadly, Deathwatch doesn't quite make it to classic status either; if a few instances of flashy CGI Special Effects had been allowed to remain unseen and the plot taken in a slightly more psychological direction I would be raving about this movie --it's quite gripping from the start and its sense of damp nightmare horror lingers in the mind after viewing.
Deathwatch makes an interesting comparison to another film with a remarkably similar set-up called THE BUNKER that came out around the same time concerning German Soldiers in WWII. I have a theory that if DEATHWATCH had remained purely psychological and THE BUNKER had gone in the direction of more explicit supernatural manifestations--if both films had traded certain characteristics--each film would be much stronger; as it is I prefer Deathwatch. There are some really creepy scenes and some of the performances quite well done; Jaime Bell does hysteria and ruined youth very well and Andy Serkis amazes with his growling psychotic brute.

Description
The Ultimate Sacrifice! This time, they thought they were ready for anything the Gantz could throw at them. They were wrong. The third horrifying game rips into the resurrectees, decimating their ranks as wave after wave of deadly opponents exact their bloody toll. No one is spared, no one is safe, and for any of the players to survive, one of their number will have to make the ultimate sacrifice. And even then, it may all be for nothing. The gods of death walk the earth in the eight electrifying volume of GANTZ!

This is FREAKIN insane!.......2005-11-15
Gantz simply must be recognized if for nothing more than its unapologetic killing of as many people as possible, whether they be main character or not. Having read the manga, I can say that the it only gets more depressing and bloody, which is not neccesarily a bad thing. All things aside, Gantz really explores ideas about human interaction, and this volume really fleshes out the character of Kurono, while at the same time making him a complete badass. This show just gets better and better with each volume, and I hope that ADV will decide to extend the series beyond just the two announced seasons.
It Just Gets Better!.......2005-11-02
I Need my GANTZ Fix!! I finished this disk and am waiting for disk 9 to show up.
You just never know who is next to Die. The Plot is so well woven you can start to see that GANTZ is doing more than just allowing people to die. It is more complex than that. The Voice actors are great! The opening song just helps with the energy the show gives off. I want one of those suits! That Bum from the first show keeps showing up. The story only gets better. A Main character dies but GANTZ is up to something!!
He holds the cards. A friend wants to sit down and watch them. He feels he is missing out. Yes he is!!
Leaves you NEEDING more.......2005-10-18
Content-wise, this is the best volume of the Gantz saga so far. Being that each of the three episodes (as I weep at the lack of a fourth as in Volume 7) takes place in-battle, there is no shortage of the good 'ol extreme action and violence one comes to expect from every single episode of Gantz thus far. There is significantly less standing around and exposition, although one takes notice that several minutes of the beginning of each of the episodes is a rather irriating recap of the episode just seen not more than 15 minutes before. But as far as plot goes.... this one's definitely off the chart. Enough mind-blowing events to cause, well, your mind to blow.
My only few complaints stem from the fact that the art seems to have slipped just a little, more than likely due to the fact that the Japanese production company (Gonzo) in charge of Gantz were on an incredibly demanding schedule to get these episodes created on time. However, the art and direction in the show is still just a bit higher than top-notch, and 99% of everyone who loves the show won't care.
And fortunately, in this volume, all of the extras are intact, including the original Japanese language track. UNfortunately, however, there are almost no extras to speak of otherwise. Which I suppose when a series is getting into the later volumes of its run, one would come to expect such a thing.
At any rate, any fan of Gantz has already ordered this volume, already watched it, and already loved it.
WOW!.......2005-10-16
There is not another anime similar to gantz in all of it's aspects, truly unpredictable. Lots of action in this volume but the third game has the toughest opponents yet and like the description on the back points out: no one is safe. With every player fighting in the first 2 episodes on this dvd, you think everything is alright. Then gantz hits you with plot twists that make you like the anime even more. I don't want to give away any real details because you must see this yourself and then you have to get the next volume. Deathwatch is a perfect name to describe this volume.
Oh my Christ.......2005-10-15
Are you sitting around watching your anime and thinking "well this is pretty good anime, but what I really want is an anime that will scar me for life? Like, such a thing that after I have watched it, I will never be completely all right, ever, ever again?"
If that sounds like what you are looking for, then this is the anime for you.
