Adult, stylish, and more than a little mean, this full-length animated tale has one very strong thing going for it--it knows how to milk cool. The animation is superior to anything recently devoted to a superhero...or super antihero, in this case. Al Simmons was a government assassin before he was burned to death and sent to hell (plot summary's starting out nicely, isn't it?). After making a particularly bad deal with the devil--to lead Satan's dark armies in exchange for seeing his wife again--Spawn is let loose upon the world. He immediately whacks three mob hit men, making his presence known and getting himself into all sorts of trouble. Spawn is also visited by the Clown, an obese, disgusting Beatrice, guiding our third-degree-burned Dante through this hellish, topside world. There are other nasty characters, but in this first segment a very gratuitous inclusion of a child murderer goes too far for even this mature fare. Spawn isn't fun; there's very little joy in any of this. But the point isn't fun--it's brutal, adult-comic style. And there's plenty of it. --Keith Simanton

The cloak and chains of Spawn explode from the comic book page onto the screen in a deadly tornado of untapped, unwrapped, merciless power.

Wish it continued...........2007-05-09
This series is definitely for the mature. Very dark and not at all happy, fairly depressing. But I really really liked the third season. Would love to see where they were taking this series.
I remember this being a lot better.......2007-03-05
I watched this series when it first aired. I thought it was great.
I watched it again last night...I thought it was kind of bad.
The animation is very cheap. They use the same animation over and over to save money. But even the artwork is cheaply done.
The story is as good as ever. But the voice acting helps to bring it down. Everybody is on one note through the entire thing. Which gets old and boring fast.
Bad animation and bad voice acting really hurt this series. I wish they'd redo it.
The Original Mofo!.......2007-02-08
Ok, the movie wasn't THAT bad, but nothing compares to the HBO Original Series, animated version of Spawn. The movie could have been so much better had they stuck to this format, but I understand you wanna clean things up so the kiddies can come along too and make that extra money.
This was well worth the money.
Hardcore, creative, rated R, maybe even x its Awesome.......2006-11-18
Damn creative, intense mood when viewing, i loved it. Very violent and witty characters. Very good artwork. Lots of story involved, well written you have to follow along. Rather realistic, not perfectly but definitly good enough indeed, it is fantasy horror anyway. If they made it a movie it would phu ken rock! They already did though just with a partly different story line. Its a real time passer, for when your ripped:) or even when not.
Chilling..........2006-11-10
I found this series of animation to be wondefully done and perfectly adult. By that, I mean that Todd McFarlane seems to have spared no expense (so to speak) with respect to subject matter, language, violence and sexual overtones. Every bit of the film is both as dark as the very alley that the Hellspawn chooses to linger about, and, equally as wont for hope and possible redemption as the flickering lights that sometimes cast about said alley.
From the beginning, even the repetition in story theme (the manifestations of Al's recurring degeneration into madness and ultimate damnation) seemed to carry a creep factor for me. I didn't once find myself bored, nor was I able to predict any of the outcomes from the various episodes.
My only complaint about the series, as a whole, is that it just wasn't long enough. I don't even mind the cliffanger-like ending of the series, but I found myself wanting to watch more of the story unfold. I'm not sure if any further developments are planned or in the works, but I would certainly give new material the benefit of the doubt just based on how much I enjoyed this series.
I hope more will follow...

Great Series.......2007-06-01
I loved when this Series when it was on HBO for 3 series but then it was cancelled, and that was a shame right in the middle of the storyline, I was hoping that Todd Mcfarlane would've finished this series with a straight to DVD release but it never happened. It was a Great show the Animation was topic notch. Again hopefully one day they'll continue this series from where it left off.

FONZO'S QUESTION.......2006-09-18
hey I am 13 and I have boughten spawn the first season for vhs (the edited version which I liked but thought they cut out tooo much) and I was wondering what is the difference between the edited version and the dvd I know there is more blood,,gore, language, etc. but what I really want to know is what the sexual things are and how often they occur and how bad they are....Please somone answer this QUESTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!
alright kid, here's the deal. Get this thing however you can.......2006-06-17
So what about your parents, this thing is full of blood and breaking limbs and all kinds of good stuff. I had to find out the hard way that the CARTOON version is the one to watch. There is a bit of language and it does HAVE SOME VERY EVIL CHILD MOLESTATION SCENES, but it is not very long and your parents could always like tape it and cut those parts out and I would say you could watch it if you aer like 12 or older. You are gonna find out abotu this stuff one day, why not now? It is one hell of a cartoon kid. Batman: the animated series is my favorite show ever, so you should probably go with that till you get older, but go to best buy and BUY this. It is cheap dude, don't tell them I told you any of this, late.
FONZO's QUESTION.......2006-05-30
hey i am a 13 year old teen. I have been reading the reviews for the spawn animated series because i have been a spawn fan for a while i read the comics and i saw the movie(didn't really like) but anyway all i have pretty much heard is lots of blood and gore which is fine with me and parents don't really care but i am worried about the language and the "parental situations". So i was just wondering if anyone could tell me about it some more thanks!
P.S. i rated this a 4 because i love spawn but not sure about the spawn animation series
A Spotty First Season.......2006-05-03
In the audio commentary on this disc, Todd McFarlane says that he included a lot of violence and sexual situations in this first season to grab the viewer's attention and let them know what kind of show Spawn is going to be, and he isn't kidding. Also, this first season is overwhelmed with constant voiceovers by the Cogliostro character. He is constantly telling us what Spawn is going through emotionally, which is sometimes helpful in providing information on Spawn's past and present situations, but only until he starts repeating himself. Once you've heard about how Spawn is going through a deep inner conflict, struggling to regain his humanity, I promise you won't need to hear it again. Rather than hear him tell me about Spawn, I would prefer to see Spawn show us what he is going through on his own, especially with the wonderful voice work for the Spawn character by Keith David. These two aspects of this first season almost overshadow the basic themes and characters that make Spawn an interesting story to begin with. But luckily, the show's creators are more focused in the second year, and all the explanation and mood-setting done in this lesser first attempt set up what is a much better second season.
Terrible writitng ruins a potentially good movie.......2006-04-13
First of all, I've never read the comics
This movie could have been good if it wasnt for the terrible writers and director. The animation was well done and so was the story, but the movie became muddied down by gratituous, needless violence and sex...not that I'm against that, but there is such a thing as goign overboard and this movie did that.
The voice acting was well done also, espcieally with spawn himself.
It's too bad..this movie had the potential to be great

Todd McFarlane's Spawn 2
From the mind of comic-book maestro Todd McFarlane comes the second season of episodes of the animated Spawn. Highly stylized animation and provocative story lines make Spawn a sophisticated cartoon sometimes more appropriate for older audiences. Murder victim Al Simmons has returned from hell to earth as a "hellspawn," a soldier for the army of darkness sent to collect more souls for hell. In these episodes, Spawn meets the man who assassinated him and becomes suspicious of the organization that ordered him killed. Jason Wynn, the leader of the group, plans to sell weapons of mass destruction stolen from the military. Spawn's former wife, Wanda, has since remarried Terry Fitzgerald, with whom Spawn must reconcile. Terry is hot on the trail of the missing arms, and Wynn and his assassins, including the highly trained Merrick, set out to kill Terry, Wanda, and their daughter, Cyan. Spawn foils the plot while realizing the hard truth that Wanda has a new life. --Shannon Gee
Spawn 3: The Ultimate Battle
The third chapter of this compelling HBO miniseries answers a number of questions--namely, who is the omnipotent old man who hides in the shadows and why is the mysterious Asian reporter (Jade) investigating the alley murders? Spawn has reached a crossroads, and he must choose between the forces of darkness and light. But it's not clear-cut: Al (Spawn) must deliberate over the seemingly minor differences that separate heaven and hell in his world. As a former assassin for the NSA, he "opened the eyes of hell" with his iniquitous deeds of depravity; therefore, his journey to hell was preordained. But this particular section of the series intriguingly asks, What if you had no choice, and killing was not just the only way out of a squeeze but was also your fate? Intellectual stuff, indeed. But as with the rest of the series, a profound metaphysical puzzle is brought to the fore without justifying it with an answer. It's frustrating, but also keeps you firmly planted in your chair, pondering conundrum after conundrum. --Jeremy Storey
Description
A terrifying whirlwind is sucking the earth dry, dragging all caught in its spiral down to the very depths of hell. Todd McFarlane's SPAWN at last stands alone, torn between heaven and hell. From Hell the evil forces that control his destiny beckon. And from Heaven, bounty hunters, whose soul mission is the destruction of hellspawn, have been sent to destroy him. Beautiful, seductive, deadly. No man can resist them. No hellspawn can survive them.
Customer Reviews:
Great fun, but not an ending.......2007-01-09
Continues the Spawn story from the previous two DVDs, each of which (I believe) contains a whole season of the HBO animated series. My only complaint is that this doesn't provide any sort of end; if you enjoy it, you'll wish there was another disc to continue the story.
I WANT A SPAWN 4!!!!!!.......2006-10-18
I don't think I will get another one but I wish I knew why. I never even knew this was a show on HBO. I just stumbled upon the first Spawn and of course had to get the 2nd and 3rd. Overall the 2nd and 3rd seasons of Spawn don't live up to the first but it always entertains. This one starts out setting up the ultimate Hell vs. Heaven scenario. The old man who keeps talking to Spawn whether he likes it or not explains his backround and also explains how this war is being played. Heaven of course sends the angel bounty hunter to eliminate Spawn and we end up getting a pretty good story here. But they also send a vampire creature to take Spawn out since the first killer isn't getting the job done. Not exactly the Heaven I grew up knowing.
The show continues to be very violent but not anything too sickening. I liked how it felt like a good cop drama with the story between Twitch and his mindless partner. But they give him a lot more of a role in this one and can you believe you may end up respecting that fat slob of a cop? I never thought it would happen. Overall, I enjoyed this series very much and hope that it will comes back one day.
Wanda! Wanda! Wanda!.......2006-08-15
the show was on HBO, it could have been as graphic as the comic, but nooooooooooooo it had to be a complaining Spawn, the fighting scenes? please, the only reason i gave it 3 stars is because i like Spawn, and $9.99 is a great price for this product, and i had to get the collection, but its still on the shelf after just viewing it once
just average.......2005-05-01
I give this one an average rating. Why? I hate it when they add asian characters but forget to do the research on their background to make it 'accurate'? I'm japanese, so it's quite obvious that there was HUGE HUGE errors in Jade's character. For one thing Khan is a character out of China. Jade is using Samuri swords from feudal Japan. Completely opposite sides of the wars and cultures during that time period. It's like what us Japanese say about the zen gardens and zen furniture. "I don't remember ever seen that in Japan. Oh wait, it's American".
The Jade character being an mercenary is way to cheezy. The fight between evil and good was ok, but to add a mask of Khan, the chinese Triads, and a samurai warrior from china was way outside of what this could have been.
If you ever watch the makings of animated counter-parts from Japan, you'll realize that the first thing they do is make sure that the character designs and parts of the towns, allies are always based on realism. Ghost in the Shell, they actually flew to Guam (outside Japan) just to practice shooting guns, to see how they work, shoot, see sparks, and do damage. The realism team brought this back and added it to the film.
Spawn 3? Really really blew the factoid on this one. Jade is so way off in regards to her culture country background, and the outfit just doesn't look accurate either. I was really dissapointed by the characters.
However I did like the blond mercenary whom was so well animated and would've passed a character from the Street Fighter II animated film.
Buy Spawn I, but forget about III.
Spawn.......2004-11-13
Spawn is a resurrected U.S. soldier/assassin who made himself one bad deal with Hell and tries to make things right. Or something like that. It probably wasn't a good idea to immerse myself in Spawn with SPAWN 3, a compilation of episodes from the third season of the HBO animated series.
However, after seeing SPAWN 3, I'm not at all anxious to investigate 1 or 2. The animation is good to very good but my gosh this in one slow moving action story. Even a neophyte like me could pick up on most of the important plot points because this movie tends to repeat things over and over and over. I realize this is supposed to be a mature comic aimed at an adult audience, but I found its philosophical musings shallow and trite. If I'd been paying more attention I might have found them laughable.
If you want to watch an angst-driven animated hero, or anti-hero, with really bad teeth and a cool, life-of-its-own costume, give this one a shot.

From the mind of comic-book maestro Todd MacFarlane comes the second season of episodes of the animated Spawn. Highly stylized animation and provocative story lines make Spawn a sophisticated cartoon sometimes more appropriate for older audiences. Murder victim Al Simmons has returned from hell to earth as a "hellspawn," a soldier for the army of darkness sent to collect more souls for hell. The injustice of his death and his former life as a dedicated husband throws a wrench into hell's plan--Spawn remembers his human life and fights the inclination to do evil. Still, he is vengeful and he walks the line between killing for justice and just plain killing.
In these episodes, Spawn meets the man who assassinated him and becomes suspect of the organization that ordered him killed. Jason Wynn, the leader of the group, has plans to sell weapons of mass destruction stolen from the military. Spawn's former wife Wanda has since remarried Terry Fitzgerald, with whom Spawn must reconcile. Terry is hot on the trail of the missing arms, and Wynn and his assassins, including the highly trained Merrick, set out to kill Terry, Wanda, and their daughter Cyan. Spawn foils the plot while realizing the hard truth that Wanda has a new life. Spawn 2 is the slick and darkly realized animated adaptation of the popular comic book of the same name. It features the voice talents of Keith David (Spawn), who appeared in Dead Presidents, Denise Poirier (Merrick), and John Rafter Lee (Wynn), who also is the voice of Aeon Flux and Trevor Goodchild in the popular animated series Aeon Flux. --Shannon Gee
Description
Todd McFarlane's hell-spawn returns to battle the forces of evil on earth in this powerful feature-length installment of SPAWN. How can you avenge betrayal and murder? How can you fight for right in a world so steeped in evil? How can you protect those you love most from all that can do them harm? No man living - or dead - can tell you. But one trapped between both is struggling for an answer that can save the lives of his most beloved, or plunge the world into eternal darkness. The cloak and chains of Spawn explode from the comic book onto the screen in a deadly tornado of untapped, unwrapped, merciless power.

awesome dvd got here really fast ty i'll buy all my stuff from u
good.......2006-08-14
if it wasnt for the Clown i would have given it two stars, what were they thinking? it had so much to offer, crappy animation, story just drags while Spawn keeps screeming Wanda!!!
very good cartoon.......2006-06-18
I was a little dissapointed in part 2 cause they began and finished part 1 so well with you really wanting them to continue the story. But then this whole movie they just kind of stand around and put in some cool opponents for spawn, but it isn't nearly as memorable as the first. They continue tellign the story, just not near as much as I wanted them to. The dark mood follows the first movie and you have very cool weird evil stuff happening. Voice acting continues to be superb and now I am just looking for part 3, and there had better be a part 4 and 5 and 6 and 7...
An Improved Second Season.......2006-05-03
The second season of the HBO animated Spawn series turned out to be a major improvement on the first. The gratuitous sex and violence was brought down a notch from the unnecessarily graphic mood of the first, but still kept at an exciting and shocking level. Also, Cogliostro manages to shut up long enough for us to realize that we don't need him to tell us everything about Spawn; we can discover what we need to know through Keith David's brilliant and emotional voicework (that stands out in a mostly mediocre voice cast) and the flashbacks that are both visually striking and incredibly well-edited into the onscreen action. Now that the show has set its tone and given all the background we need, it is able to focus on suspense, and the 2nd season has plenty of it. Did Terry betray Al to get to Wanda? Will Terry's investigating at the workplace finally force Wynn to kill him? And, most importantly, will Spawn ever get around to telling Wanda who the monster she sees really is, and will he fight for good, or turn his back to humanity? The 2nd season still isn't perfect. Spawn moping around can tend to get repetitive, and there seems to be a lot of building up between him and Wanda and in regard to the ultimate battle between good and evil that leads to few payoffs. However, whereas I barely made it to the end of the 1st season, I watched this one all the way through. I have not seen the third season, but if the show's creators continue to improve at the rate they did between the first two, it should be incredible.

Product Description
A legend to his legions of fans, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane is the most successful comic book artist in history. Over the past decade, this shrewd and enigmatic entrepreneur has grown his business into a multi-million dollar entertainment empire encompassing comics, action figures, television, video games, and music videos. In addition to an Emmy®-award winning television series for HBO and a $100 million feature film, the Spawn comic has sold over 150 million copies since 1992 - more than any other urband edrama character including Batman, Spider-Man, Superman and Wolverine. Todd McFarlane: The Devil You Know offers audiences an engaging look at the man behind Spawn's thrillingly dark and edgy images and exposes the many sides of McFarlane - from corporate rebel to dedicated family man to unrelenting baseball enthusiast (in fact, McFarlane may be more famous for his 1999 $3 million purchase of Mark McGwire's 70th home run baseball than he is for Spawn). McFarlane is a controversial yet likeable character, a self-confessed man of "contradictions and inconsistencies," who ultimately just wants to play by his own rules. A candid exploration of McFarlane's most intimate thoughts, this film ultimately offers us a rare glimpse inside one of the world's most brilliant, intriguing, and creative minds.

Unintended hilarity?.......2006-10-05
I think it is unintentional but Todd's hubris shines through exposing what kind of person he is. His constant inane statements are a frequent source of laughter (or tears) and the sudden switch to a baseball documentary is confusing. The fact that the speculator crash that he helped create is barely mentioned in the film leads me to believe that this film was intended as praise for Todd but falls way short of the mark with the subjects help.
Todd McFarland thinks he is great and is excited to tell you how great he thinks he is.
Damning testimony on his character, talent and waning comic book career.
The Devil You Don't.......2004-12-29
Todd McFarlane began his multimillion dollar empire as co-founder of Image Comics on the premise that creators needed the rights to their creations and stories. This "docu-ganda" would have you believe that he stuck to that philosophy, and is somehow a super-hero; a god among mortals.
Not so much. McFarlane swindled so many creators out of their work that he's undergone lawsuit after lawsuit (and lost his share of them as well, forfeiting partial rights to some of his characters and being ordered to pay damages to writers like Neil Gaiman). He claims work that isn't his, "never gives you any credit," according to employee Steve Niles, and helped turn comics from a contemplative, interesting medium into a widescreen bloodbath.
Sheer, untainted hubris is the driving force behind the McFarlane phenomenon, and don't let anyone (especially not his stooges behind the camera) tell you different.
A comic book legend in his own words!.......2004-11-30
This DVD presents a terrific look into one of the greats of comic book art. Todd McFarlane talks in detail about his views on art, business, and life. He comes across as brash, determined, confident, and hard-working, and this mentality is a large part of why he has achieved the success that he has today. Beyond comics, this DVD should be pretty inspiring for anyone who wanted to accomplish something worthwhile in life.
McFarlane discusses his childhood and his original love of baseball. He then talks about his early days as a struggling artist living in a trailer in Washington determined to break into the comics business, and his subsequent huge success years later with Spider-Man and Spawn. Not one to be satisfied with resting on his laurels, McFarlane then began to branch out into different fields, like toy design and animation. Although this program is about McFarlane, I agree with the other reviewer that it could have included more insight into Image Comics and perhaps his relationships with all the other founders.
The DVD is very well put together, showing McFarlane around his studio and home, and on business trips. It is jam-packed with McFarlane's artwork, both new and old, and unpublished work. The program also includes associates and friends like Terry Fitzgerald, Todd's wife Wanda, Al Simmons, and many many others. Two hardcore McFarlane fans are also featured on the program and they are pretty interesting. One of the best highlights of the DVD is that it actually shows McFarlane the day he bid on and won the Mark McGwire baseball.
For any comics fan, or anyone interested by comics, or anyone who wanted to achieve something in life, this DVD is highly recommended!
Great documentary on a living legend.......2002-07-10
If you are interested Todd's work (Spider-Man, Spawn. etc) this is a good DVD to watch. If you want to know how one guy went from living in a trailer in Eastern Washington to being the greatest comic book artist around to a self made million with his own companies, watch this DVD. The documentary goes through his life, his struggle from wanting to be a baseball player to ending up where he is now. He is interviewed through out the documentary along with his family and friends. It even shows the day he bought the Maguire ball for 3 million. It is truly a very interesting documentary for all McFarlane fans. It is also interesting for anyone that ever had a goal.
CONS: I wish they went more into detail about the image creation. Todd spoke from his point of view (which was interesting to begin with- How Marvel editors didn't print Shatterstar stabbing Juggernaut in the eye in Todd's original artwork on Todd's last Spider-Man book). It don't think it covered enough about Image's rise and problems they had. They talk about Image comics a little bit, but not too much.
Overall, this is must have for all fans and if you are some what interested, I'd say rent it.
I think this DVD documentary is much better put together and detailed than Stan Lee's Monsters, Mutants and Marvels.
