Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars 100% Pure Cult Classic Horror Entertainment.......2007-05-21

This movie is great entertainment. It's an absolute wonderful cult classic horror flick that's able to keep the kid's eyes glued to the screen as well as the rest of the family crew also...or at least I think so anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Ghoulish Fun with a Price .......2007-04-21

Vincent Price was known for the horror genre . As in my horror favorites, this set of Phibes films, Theater of Blood, The Raven, House of Wax and the Fall of the House of Usher are the ones i enjoy most.

Both these films directed by Robert Fuest, who kept the camp on these productions. But did not make this cutey. It was done light, with a horrorable edge and a witty black comedy, which Price was known for in the later 1960s-1970s. It is too bad, Fuest did not do any director's audio commentary, that would be amazing if it happened

In the first film The Abominable Dr. Phibes, Price is in rare form as Doctor Phibes, an antihero who is seeking revenge of the medical team who killed his dead wife. His methods of death is following the ten plagues. Joseph Cotton plays the surgeon who headed the team and Phibes's foil in this movie.

The second film, Phibes heads to Egypt to try to awaken his dead wife with a magician incantation. Robery Quarry (Count Yorga) plays Price's foil in this sequal. The film , like Godfather two, seems better than the first film

Now in the double feature you can enjoy both film of Phibes and watch the masterful Price at work

5 out of 5 stars Hail to the Horror Antihero.......2007-04-21

Antiheroes in horror always seem to find a warm spot in fan's hearts. Perfect examples are easily cited. Just look at successful horror franchises. People always want to see the monster, madman, madwoman, or sometimes even maddoll return. With so many beloved characters, it is disappointing to me that not everyone knows of Dr. Phibes.

I would say that these films were some of the first to embrace the idea of purposely creating a horror antihero. Dr. Phibes, though evil, is charming and humorous. Instead of a growling beast or silent killer, we were offered a scarred human being of great intelligence. I don't think that you can watch these films without taking a liking to Dr. Phibes. Vincent Price was the perfect choice for this role, and is amazing throughout.

If you haven't seen these films, you should give them a chance. I find them to be vital elements of horror film history, and some of the most entertaining films that I own.

4 out of 5 stars First one is great; second isn't.......2006-11-24

I saw both of these movies when they first came out, and remembered them fondly so I bought the twofer disc for $9.99. Upon re-watching them a few days apart, I was struck by how much better the first one is than the second. In the original "Dr. Phibes," the script is coherent and the sets and costumes are quite striking. In the second, everything is done cheaply. The storyline is nonsensical, the sets are cheesy, and the acting is hammy. At one point, a black-and-white shot of ocean waves suddenly appears in the middle of a color film! Still, the ending of "Rises Again" is a classic moment of camp cinema. So, 4 to 5 stars for the first movie, 2 to 3 stars for the second. But for $9.99, I can't complain.

1 out of 5 stars Great Movie - Bad Price.......2006-11-03

I love these campy Vincent Price movies from the 70s and was delighted to find them on DVD. They were sold here on Amazon through a third party vendor for close to 30 bucks. When I got the movie it still had the factory wrapper....along with a Blockbuster price sticker still on the package for $9.99!!!! Man, at least remove the sticker so your customer doesn't feel like a total moron for being ripped off. I almost felt like the vendor was taunting me for being an idiot. First and last time I buy an old movie through a third party Amazon vendor. Looks like I just need to start surfing the bargain bins at Blockbuster instead.
