Fully aware of its status as the sequel to the surprise hit thriller of 1996, this lively follow-up trades freshness for familiarity, playing on our affection for returning characters while obeying--and then subverting--the "rules" of sequels. Once again, movie references are cleverly employed to draw us into the story, which takes place two years after the events of Scream, at a small Ohio college, where the Scream survivors reunite when another series of mysterious killings begins. Capitalizing on the guesswork involving a host of potential suspects, director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson have crafted a thriller that's more of a Scream clone than a genuinely inventive new story. But the shocks are just as effective, and escalating tension leads to a tautly staged climax that's simultaneously logical and giddily over the top. Background information for trivia buffs: to preserve the secrecy of plot twists, copies of the screenplay were heavily guarded during production and restricted to only the most crucial personnel. When an early draft was circulated on the Internet, screenwriter Kevin Williamson did rewrites, and subsequent drafts were printed with red ink on brown paper, eliminating the threat of photocopying. 3 out of 5 stars More scream, less theme.......2007-03-11

Just as they did in the first film, director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson have some witty, metacognitive fun with the conventions of the horror genre in this tale of survivors from the original "Scream" facing off against a copycat. Points made include how African Americans are thought to have a more realistic responses to horror situations yet are always among the first characters to die, the need for sequels to be gorier than originals, and the commercialization and packaging of spectacular cases of real-world violence. Unfortunately, the rule most effectively dramatized is the one that tells us that sequels are never as good as the original. All of the wit is packed into the first 40% of the film. By the time we get to the end, it has degenerated into a lot of running and stabbing and pointless plot twists.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best of all three Scream movies!!.......2006-07-19

The first Scream was fine, very cool, with scenes that could scare you to death...great.. The third and last Scream was maybe the worst, a little too predictable and boring sometimes, plus funny in other scenes. But this one, Scream 2, is the most terrifying of all them. The ways Ghostface appears are very horrifying, and you literally are on the edge of your seat the whole time....

One thing I have to mention is that the music they used in this movie was perfect. In a horror film, the music helps a lot, to remark the suspense, and that works amazingly good in this movie. Maybe the scene that scares the most is the one in which Sydney is at the theatre....with Ghostface chasing her. That scene is great!

The whole movie is great!, I hadrly recommend this movie, and this is not one of those trilogies in which you must see the first part otherwise you won't understand anything, that doesn't happen with Scream. If you want to see a good quality horror film, see Scream 2.

Greetings from Chile :)

3 out of 5 stars Wes' highly ambitious mess.......2006-07-05

Wes Craven's follow-up to his highly successfull 1996 self-referential groundbreaker is a big-budget gaudy mess of a movie, albeit an ambitious one. As with the previous film, the best part is at the beginning: a surreal Rocky-Horror like parody of a sneak preview of "Stab," that chronicles the events of the first Scream film with gleeful self-parody and brazen exploitation (featuring Heather Graham doing some really sly comic work in the now-famous Drew Barrymore Gets Killed opening sequence). From that point out, the film degenerates into a somewhat routine self-parody as well, though this one not as funny or as shocking as the scene in the cinema. It's not bad, not at all....there are some good bits. However the overall tone is smug and a bit too forced, as screenwriter Williamson repeatedly tries to outdo his script for the previous Scream. Things get more and more chaotic (this has got to be one of the LOUDEST films in recent memory), but to no real satisfying end. The momentum doesn't hold this time and it plays like a made for TV film at some points. Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courtney Cox all wear on the nerves as their character's plot-lines and dialogue become so cloying and comfy-cozy we begin to realize they'll definitely be around for future installments, and given their limited ranges as performers, that's not necessarily a good thing. On the other hand, there are good solid turns from Jamie Kennedy (livening things up again as movie freak Randy) and from the supporting cast which includes Sarah Michelle Gellar in a "When a Stranger Calls" type homage, and Laurie Metcalf, who looks like she's having the time of her life serving up a very cold hammy casserole.

5 out of 5 stars A sequel that's a great companion piece to the original.......2006-06-21

Throughout the years, I've grown to appreciate Scream 2 as one of the best sequels ever. It doesn't insult the intelligence of the audience, you care for all the characters and their well being and most importantly when its revealed who's responsible for the killings: the motivation makes perfect sense.

It's fun to watch the beginning as Jada Pinkett-Smith bemoans the fact that horror films have never really had black actors and/or actresses, and yet this film has four talented black actors including Duane Martin, Omar Epps, the lovely Elise Neal and Jada.

Even when an actor has a small part like Sarah Michelle Gellar, it becomes pivitol to the plot. I know in the audio commentary Wes Craven didn't really like the explanation of how the first three characters were targeted in reference to the original. For me it made perfect sense, which shows the the genius of Kevin Williams' script.

With New Nightmare, Scream and Scream 2: Wes Craven completed a neat hat trick. Although in my eyes, Scream 3 was very much a letdown.

4 out of 5 stars Some Slasher Horror, Oklahoma Style and More!!.......2005-10-18

First of all, yes there really is a Lake Tenkiller that is a popular destination for fisherman and campers. Now, being a huge fan of horror films, I can't say I would feel too comfortable bedding down in a Jason-Friendly camper at a lake named Tenkiller. And with a cool name like Tenkiller, you have to wish a better horror film would have used the name in it's title as opposed to "Terror at Tenkiller". There is actually almost no terror involved. A more apt title might have been "Tedium at Tenkiller" or "Some Annoyance at Tenkiller". The overall story isn't bad, but the execution (pun intended) is just awful. A girl running away from an abusive relationship unfortunately catches the eye of the local psychopath. It's a neat departure on the usual teens-in-peril-from-masked-killer type horror flick, but there really isn't any suspense or horror found here becuase the movie's pace is sooooo slooowww.
The real treat for me though was the second film on the disk, "The Last Slumber Party". This movie was just amazing in it's stupidity. Truly you have to see it to believe it. There is just so much in this movie to goof on! The bad 80's hair metal, the dinner-theater level acting, the witty banter of the middle aged teens. If you think a guy wearing surgeons scrubs carrying a bloody scalpel as he walks toward the camera is scary, then this movie will terrify you!! I am not kidding when I say, they used this same shot of the would-be slasher slowly moving toward the camera holding out the scalpel at least 10 times!! The object of the slasher's attention in this movie is a doctor (we know this becuase he wears his scrubs everywhere!! In the hospital, at home, at the local Kwik-E-Mart) and the doctor's family, who live in a house whose interior decorating had to have been done by a blind man. The one special effect in the film is a blood squirting scalpel, and that only works about half the time! Usually the slasher will be drawing the fake scalpel across someone's gullet only to have it start squirting about 1/2 way across??!!! There really are some true belly-laughs with this one. The wide eyed slasher (who happens to also be the writer/director) is just too damn funny! His "sneaking" around is extraordinary!! In one scene he runs into the house may 3 steps in front of the heroine, who fails to see him, even though we viewers can clearly see him as he runs across the screened in porch!! I guess the closer you are to the screen, the harder it is to see in? I could go on and on with this movie, it's just too dumb for words, but so damn enjoyable because of it! If you like bad movies, then this is like the "Citizen Kane" of awful cinema.
If you are looking for real scares, avoid this disk. I can't tell you earnestly enough, these movies are BAD, just AWFUL! But, if you are like me and enjoy the "So Bad They're Good" type of film, then make sure you pick this up for "Last Slumber Party".

2 out of 5 stars For slasher completists only.......2005-03-31

The box says "2 classic slasher flicks." If by "classic" they mean "made in the 1980's" then this would be a true statement. By my estimation, the two movies featured here are two of the worst slasher movies ever made, and that's saying a lot about a genre that seemed to produce as many crappy films as it did good ones. Even at the low price, even the most dedicated horror fan will find these two difficult to sit through.

First up, we've got Terror at Tenkiller, released in 1986. A slasher movie that takes place in a lake/camping location.....hmmm how very original. It's shot on video, produced/directed/cowritten by Ken Meyer. The credits are filled with people with the last name Meyer, so this looks like a family affair. The two main characters are Leslie and her friend Jana: Leslie has a borderline-abusive boyfriend Josh who likes to push her around. At one point, Jana asks, "Do your parents know about the caveman stuff?" It's possible the film makers were trying to insert some kind of girl-power statements about leaving an abusive boyfriend, possibly because of the feminist backlash against slasher movies...it's pretty lamely done in any case. To unwind, the two girls take a vacation to an idyllic resort called Lake Tenkiller. "What a strange name for a lake!" remarks Leslie. Turns out the lake was named after an Indian princess who killed 10 members of a rival tribe, but of course it's also a sign of things to come.

This movie has the terrible acting that you'd expect from any of these ultra low-budget slashers, but what isn't expected is how boring the whole thing is. Once they get up to the lake, the story really drags, and it seems like half the time is spent with the girls on phone calls. It's revealed early on who the killer is, so that robs the story of any kind of suspense or surprises. There's two so-so gore scenes, a smattering of nudity, and at one point we see Leslie reading the Stephen King book "The Stand."

Next up, we have The Last Slumber Party, from 1988. This one is so unbelievably bad that it actually makes Terror at Tenkiller look decent; the picture quality alone gives it a shot-on-a-home video camera look. Obviously this was an attempt to cash in on the success of Slumber Party Massacre and its sequels. The story concerns a group of high school girls who decide to have a slumber party with all the expected ingredients: cheesy music, underage drinking, and sneaking in the boys who play practical jokes on them. Trouble is, there's an escaped mental patient on the loose with a scalpel, dressed in scrubs and a surgeon's mask. Linda, whose house is the location for the slumber party, just happens to be the daughter of the doctor who ordered the maniac's lobotomy, and he's a little ticked off about that.

There's some real hilarious moments here. The bad music, first of all, which ranges from shrieking cheese-metal (performed by Firstryke) to corny synth-funk, to exaggeratedly "scary" electronic themes. The acting is extremely deadpan, nearly porno-quality: a nurse character stutters one of her lines and it's left in the movie. There's cornball stereotypes like the jocks and a nerd character nicknamed "Science." There's moronic girl characters who say things like "munch out" when they want to eat snacks. All the ingredients for a 1980's funfest are here, but when you put them all together they add up to a boring film. There's no nudity, and no gore: just some fake blood that you can see squirting out of the scalpel when the maniac slashes throats. Considering the whole thing's only about 72 minutes long, it seems like a lot longer. People who like films that are painfully bad, below Mystery Science Theatre quality, may like it. I found it entertaining for a while but then it just became mind-numbing. Stephen Tyler is the writer and director, and also plays the maniac.

I would only recommend this DVD to diehard completists who want to own every slasher film ever made. With no special features, at least you can say you got two movies for a cheap price. Everyone else steer clear. If it's cheesy 80's slasher fun that you're craving, I'd say go with the far superior Slumber Party Massacre or Pieces. Other fun 80's horror films I would recommend would include Chopping Mall, Troll, The Gate, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and the so-bad-it's good Night Train to Terror.

None of the cast members knew who the killer was until the final scenes were filmed! --Jeff Shannon

This third installment of the hugely popular Scream trilogy doesn't have the moxie and smarts of its two predecessors, but it's still a great thrill ride. Scripted by Ehren Kruger (from an outline by Scream writer Kevin Williamson), Scream 3 takes the three surviving characters from the first two films--beleagured heroine Sidney (Neve Campbell), ruthless TV journalist Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox Arquette), and hapless deputy Dewey (David Arquette)--and transplants them to the environs of Hollywood. Turns out a familiarly masked killer is stalking the cast of Stab 3, the third installment of the movies within the Scream movies. (Following all this? Don't worry, it's not entirely vital to the plot.) It's supposed to be a fun house of mirrors, with each character encountering the actor playing themselves and visiting reconstructed sets of the murder scenes, but it doesn't have the same snap and crackle of the first two films. Rather than parodying the teen horror genre, Scream 3 seems to be playing by the rules instead of breaking them gleefully, and its postmodern plotting is a little too fast and loose. Williamson's presence is sorely missed--it's the difference between hitting one out of the park and scoring a solid triple. Director Wes Craven, though, still brings his die-hard energy to the proceedings, from the requisite heart-pumping prologue to the go-for-broke (but somewhat predictable) ending. Kudos to Campbell, Cox, and especially Arquette for bringing spirit to characters who should be justifiably tired of being corpse magnets; Campbell is remarkably graceful considering she's saddled with plot twists involving heretofore undisclosed family baggage. And in the film's one inspired stroke of brilliance, Cox's Gale is trailed by a hilarious Parker Posey as the actress playing Gale in Stab 3, who astutely realizes that if they're caught by the killer together, it'll be the real Gale who gets it. If Scream 3 had stuck to such ingenious parody throughout, it would have been a real winner; as it is, it's an energetic shadow of itself. With Scream alums Liev Schreiber and Jamie Kennedy in brief but winning cameos. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Scream Collection...well, almost........2006-12-24

The movies in this box set are enticing and highly enjoyable. Plus, the bonus features on each disc are awesome. I just want to point out one thing. The fourth disc's dvd-rom material is a major let down. It operates on the PC Friendly program and I can't get it to work. The dvd-rom features do look nice, but I haven't been able to get access to them yet. This isn't just my occurrence, I've seen this posted all over the internet. This isn't enough to bring the whole collection down to four stars, though. Thus it is almost the ultimate Scream collection.

3 out of 5 stars Great disc: disappointing film. .......2006-06-21

I had purchased Scream 3 as part of the Box set of Scream films. Although the actual disc presentation and extras are exceptional, to me the film let me down.

The premise is intriguing: that there are more mysteries and unanswered questions surrounding the life and death of Maureen Prescott that even her daughter, Sidney, didn't know about. But somehow the plot premise that Maureen was a B movie actress in horror films seems so out of left field it really doesn't go well with the rest of what has happened in the previous films.

There are some excellent scenes and acting in the film. The most haunting being Sidney's visit to the movie set and seeing the exact replica of her and Stu's home from Woodsboro and viewing the scene of Tatum's demise. The opening sequence is also well done, but not as good as the other two. Parker Posey does steal the film as Jennifer Jolie and Neve Campbell is always good as Sidney Prescott.

An early sequence where a member of a class that Gale Weathers is lecturing asks her if after all the terror that has occured, it was really worth going after the story. That to me would've been a starting point to a similar but different plot.

My plot would consist of this: There is a third film being done in the Stab series, but they would actually shoot in the town of Woodsboro, which has the community up in arms. The attacks by the killer would be directed at the cast, but instead of just pictures of Maureen Prescott: the killer would leave pictures of all the victims starting with Maureen or maybe Casey Becker(Drew Barrymore). There would be another reporter but their story would cover the human element of the story, interviewing family members of the victims. As the body count mounts, a secret would be revealed about the Prescott family and the real reason for all the trouble would be revealed in the final act that would take place at the house where it all started.

I think the First two films are fine book ends, but the third one sticks out like a sore thumb.

Languages: o English (Dolby Digital 5.1) Synopsis: A meeting of two world famous climbers, one is an experienced mountaineer the other a free climber, and a journalist (Ivan) results in a bet on which of the two is the best climber. Roger (the mountaineering expert) states that Martin (the free climber) wouldn't survive a day on a 'real' climbing expedition, although he is the world's best free climber. They plan to climb 'El Toro', Pantagonia, South America, a very difficult mountain, especially due to the extreme weather conditions. The rivalry among the two men results eventually in the death of their common friend and the stealing of Roger's girlfriend (Katrina) by Martin. In the end the rivalry results in a 'climb against time' in which Martin and Roger both climb a side of the mountain to reach the top first. But they're in for a surprise... The movie contains more 'back to the real world' climbing scenes than your average cliffhanger-movie.

3 out of 5 stars Minor Herzog but an engaging yarn.......2006-07-20

Werner Herzog's Scream of Stone is a legend in film sales: a big-budget German-French-Canadian mountaineering drama that became a byword for how not to sell a movie to foreign distributors when they asked so much money that no-one could afford it and it went virtually unreleased before turning up a decade latter on budget DVD (this is its first UK release in any form).

It's actually not at all bad, although there's surprisingly little mountaineering in it: the main thrust of the film is the conflict between a legendary mountaineer who fails to climb an infamous Patagonian mountain and the exhibition climber who claims to have done so, with a restrained Donald Sutherland as the sports journalist caught in the middle and Mathilda May making a better job of the obligatory love interest than the script should let her. Brad Dourif turns up briefly as a fingerless climber infatuated with Mae West and seeming to channel the spirit of early Jack Nicholson (well, it is Herzog - you expected restraint?), but even he is less wild than expected.

The least successful element is the comic relief introduction of Al Waxman's tiresome TV producer towards the end (as well as an actress who HAD to be sleeping with either the director or one of the producers), but it's not fatal. It's a minor film, but an engaging watch with some good photography (albeit the film was surprisingly not shot in widescreen, presumably to emphasise height over width) and a neat ending.

No extras - not even a menu (although the disc is chaptered), but more than acceptable at the bargain price.

      5 out of 5 stars Go Climb a Peak..........2005-08-23

Alpine raised climber vs a gym raised climber... Beautiful story line placed in Chile with the best alpine images I have seen in a movie. Less of a documentation as "Into thin air" and more beautiful climbing sequences. A climbing movie made by climbers for climbers, you have to see it!

None of the cast members knew who the killer was until the final scenes were filmed! --Jeff Shannon
