This surprisingly satisfying horror movie centers on a mermaid--but it's hardly one of the giggly types from Peter Pan. Rufus Sewell and Carla Gugino play a couple of small-time circus people who discover that an eccentric old man keeps a genuine mermaid in a water-filled tank. Dreaming of an invitation from Ringling Bros., Sewell steals the mermaid and loads her on a ship for America. But in the middle of the Atlantic, the hungry mermaid shows her darker side--and Gugino learns that she may be linked to the mermaid in unexpected ways. She Creature was no doubt made on a low budget, but it looks excellent and the above-average script gives the strong cast firm ground to stand on. The mermaid herself (Rya Kihlsted) is both lovely and eerie. All in all, an enjoyable homage to classic horror films. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Double-Bill, Worthy for Many Reasons.......2007-05-28

"Day the World Ended" was the very first film officially released by American-International Pictures in 1956. Directed by Roger Corman, it's been copied ad nauseum, but here is the original! It's very well done, by B-movie standards, and the cast is first-rate. I won't re-hash what previous reviewers have said, but Paul Birch was later used in Corman's BEST film, "Not of This Earth", which is, pitiably, not available on DVD or VHS. It is a thought-provoking film, so typical of the paranoia regarding the bomb back in he 50's, but the script by Lou Rusoff will not insult your intelligence. It's a film all sci-fi aficianados should have in their collection. "Day the World Ended" is paired with "The She-Creature", which is a typical 50's horror exploitation film, but isn't all that bad. Certainly, production values are low, but there's Lance Fuller (the bad Brack from "This Island Earth") looking handsome and concerned, as well as newcomer Marla English (gorgeous) and the reliable Tom Conway and Cathy Downs. Perhaps a trend-setter, a reliable old actor of the past, Chester Morris, plays the oily hypnotist. Directed by horror schlock veteran Edward L. Cahn, it's worth a look. One thing that was silly is that the cover art & posters showed the monster with huge breasts, rather daring for 50's sensibilities, but no such breasts appear in the film. I'm regularly amused by such exploitation. Good package of films, especially the Corman.

5 out of 5 stars Rainy Saturdays and horror movies.......2007-04-17

This set is one more attempt on my part to chase down the movies that I loved as a child. On rainy Saturdays I would post up in front of the T.V. and turn to the Saturday afternoon "Horror fest" on our local UHF station.(before cable and VCR's UHF stations were the only other way to see these old classic horror movies)
"Day The World Ended" is a Roger Corman movie and the reason I bought this release. After a nuclear war, One man has set up a house in the "valley" so that the fallout can't get to him and he and his daughter are set to ride out the end. Well others find their way to this oasis and sure enough the start fighting amongst themselves. To make matters worse someone or something is in the woods around the house and it wants a "date",NOW!!! It's all great fun with Corman once again proving that a little money and a lot of imagination can go a long way. Super Fun
"She Creature" was one that I had not seen before for some reason and even though it's not a Corman movie it has that same American International Films feel too it. After being hypnotized a woman reverts back to the monster she was in a former past life. Nothing great but loads of fun.
In this day of tepid gore soaked remakes these old Drive-In classics shine with their wit, imagination, charm, and style. Well worth a look no matter what your age.

5 out of 5 stars Day the World Ended/She Creature.......2006-08-02

Love these old movies. If you purchase, get out the popcorn and sodas on a dark spooky night and gather around the family, you can all watch. Not bad, even better on a stormy night.
Have lots of fun and enjoy

3 out of 5 stars Not what it could have been........2006-06-30

I've been waiting for some time for someone to finally release a copy of Day the World Ended in widescreen as it was originally released. Unfortunately, Lionsgate did it WRONG. Although they obviously used a real widescreen print as their source, for some reason of their own they formatted it into the wrong screen ratio for their DVD--using 2.35 to 1 instead of the original 1.88 to 1, which cuts off the top and bottom of the picture (in one scene, for example, you get to see a talking NOSE at the bottom of the screen). This is part of a disturbing trend among DVD producers, who are apparently trying to cater to the widescreen TV crowd (which makes it even MORE unusual that Lionsgate went 2.35 to 1--as it will have to be letterboxed even on a widescreen TV!), at the expense of the original film formats (which sometimes results in people with half-heads and no feet). At least She Creature is full screen (closer to the original 1.33 to 1 ratio), but the print is a bit dark.

5 out of 5 stars The Day the World Ended 1956.......2006-06-18

After the Atomic destruction a hand full of people find them selves in a valley that escaped the initial radiation. Naturedly the mix is of innocent and not so innocent women and men. This is not just any valley it was especially picked by a survivalist that expected the big one to be dropped and scoped out a valley with lots of lead around them.

Slowly encroaching on them is a strange mutant that has physic powers. Like the mutated monkeys on the atoll where they tested the bomb, this is probably the new generation of people replacements. Luckily he (it) still has a hankering for blonds in swimsuits.

There is also the possibility of contaminated rain bringing radiation to the valley.

One of the fun scenes in this Rodger Corman movie is when they throw a dummy off the cliff and you are supposed to believe it is a blond.

Randolph Scott is his usual stiff but smiling self as Leo Vincey, the long-lost American heir to a British family legacy, sent by his estranged father to reclaim the legendary "Flame of Life," discovered five centuries ago by his explorer ancestor. Producer Merian C. Cooper, best known for directing King Kong, changes the locale of H. Rider Haggard's classic adventure from Africa to the Arctic (which, apart from a spectacular avalanche, looks positively stagebound), but he pulls out all stops for the magnificent underground kingdom hidden in the icy mountains, complete with a cavernous throne room with vaulted ceilings and a massive staircase that would look right at home in the Ziegfeld Follies. The cruel She Who Must Be Obeyed (Helen Gahagan) is a beautiful but icy queen driven ruthless by her centuries of loneliness. The film takes some time to get started but once She makes her impressive entrance through a mist-enshrouded arch, we're plunged into a dangerous, exotic world of strange ceremonies, human sacrifices, nefarious plots, and the gorgeous whirlwind of light that is the Flame of Life. Though the dialogue is often flat and uninspired and the performances by Scott and Gahagan rather arch (costars Nigel Bruce and Helen Mack fare much better), this grand adventure concludes with a rousing climax full of impressive set pieces and breathtaking effects. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars SHE is still a delight!.......2007-05-09

The original in black & white and a seconmd version in color. A double treat for this good old-fashioned melodrama.

3 out of 5 stars Dated adventure fantasy.......2007-03-17

Square jawed Randolph Scott woefully miscast playing American Leo Vinsey is beckoned to the bedside of his dying English uncle John in the 1935 film "She". He is told of the legacy of their ancestor John Vinsey who 500 years ago discovered a mystical land called Kor in the frozen northern regions of the Arctic beyond the Russian tundra. It had been reported that within Kor there is an eternal flame which is capable of bestowing immortality.

Scott who along with his uncle's sidekick Horace Holly played by a pre- Dr. Watson Nigel Bruce embark on a perilous journey to the land of Kor. Along the way they pick up a guide's daughter Tanya played by Helen Mack who joins them on their trek. They make their way to this fabled locale to find it ruled by a cruel despotic Queen Hash-A-Mo Tep known as She played by Helen Gahagan who tries to lure Scott to share her immortality with her.

The movie "She" was a fanciful tale replete with both garish sets and costumes and a sickening overdone sense of melodrama. The acting for the most part was horrendous lead by the wooden Scott who was far more effective in his milieu, the western.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-03-10

I remember having seen the black & white version of this film some twenty years ago - - but I was completely "blown away" by the Ray Harryhausen and Legend Films colorized version. The chorography and music of the dance sequence is alone worth the price of admission. Raldoph Scott - although sometimes critized as being "wooden" - was perfect in this film - as was Helen Gahagan. Sadly - although Helen Gahagan was an exceptional actress - this was her only film. (She was a stage actress.) As an added bonus - the optional audio commentary provides a wealth of background and historical information that is a must for all film buffs.

5 out of 5 stars SHE says get this movie.......2007-02-24

This is a lot of fun to watch. Most people will connect Merian C. Cooper with the original King Kong, but this is also a great film. Randolph Scott is the star here as the leader of an expedition to find the "flame of life. Look for Nigel Bruce in a supporting role. He was better known for his portrayal of Dr. Watson in the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes. Special effect are very good for their day, but do not over take the storytelling. This DVD has both the original version and a colorized one. I recommend this, its fun!

3 out of 5 stars BEWARE: arbitrary deletions!.......2007-01-15

Being a huge fan of the spectacular results this outfit gets, I was shocked and alarmed to discover that several scenes in this classic film were arbitrarily DELETED from the original director's print! They are included in the "extras", but still, this practice (they've done it before) is deplorable and disturbing. What can they be thinking?

5 out of 5 stars A Mermaid Legend from a Different Perspective. .......2007-03-20

Great cast- Rya Kihlstedt (as the mermaid) was hypnotic. I really enjoyed the depiction of the mermaid and the way she was perceived by other characters in the movie. Feelings for the mermaid would range from anger, to fear, fascination, attraction, curiosity, and of course, horror. I think that certainly applies to anything we don't quite understand. It's always fun to delve into the darker side of Mermaid lore. A fun movie to watch if you like this genre.

5 out of 5 stars A Sexy and Scary Mermaid Film........2006-11-15

This film was made as part of a television series of films using old 1950s' American-International film titles, but having no relationship to the original films' storylines. This particular film is a highly literate and well-directed story of an 1800s' carnival huckster who greedily steals a REAL (and sexily good-looking and bare-breasted) mermaid with the intent of using her as a traveling exhibit. Unfortunately--during an ocean voyage to the United States from England--things don't work out as planned, and chaos and terror ensue as the film builds to a horrifying climax. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. One caveat: for some reason, the volume of this DVD's soundtrack is very low, and you'll really have to crank-up your system in order to hear what's going on!

4 out of 5 stars Good little tale.......2006-08-28

(3.5/5 stars) Curious that Stan Winston's name had his name stamped all over this production, given the fact the creature effects factor so minimally in the film. Nonetheless, this is a pretty cool grade B horror film. A group of English hucksters kidnaps a real, live mermaid despite warnings from her captor. They plan to head to the states to make a fortune on the sideshow circuit. Wise move, or not? Similarities with "King Kong" aside, this made-for-cable movie has much going for it: it makes good use of its limited budget by establishing a decent atmosphere, adapting a good story and getting some believable performances from its cast. In fact, lack of a large budget might be an asset for a horror movie because it forces the filmmakers to be resourceful and work within their budgets in order to be effective. Films, such as "Night of the Living Dead" and "Halloween" come to mind as being successful because they relied on atmosphere, story, music and characters rather than special effects and established actors. Given the dearth of mermaid stories, seeing the legendary creature come to life in a horror film is a singular treat. I cannot very well compare this to the 1956 movie by the same name because I have not seen that one. On its own merits, however, this one is good.

3 out of 5 stars A KILLER MERMAID!!.......2006-07-18

This is not exactly my cup of tea since I am a fan of mermaid movies!! I am most particularly fond of SPLASH, NIGHT TIDE and Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid. This mermaid movie is graphic and it's mermaid is evil...although very mysterious and beautiful!
It's not an awful movie, but definetely not my favorite mermaid movie!!

3 out of 5 stars THIS GIRL'S GOT GILLS.......2006-06-02

Another entry in the Stan Winston CREATURE FEATURES, remakes of older horror films. This is not a faithful remake of the sixties' version, but an updated one, in which a lovely mermaid is captured by an old gent who finds himself falling under her malevolent spell. She is kidnapped by a carnival showman played with great relish by Rufus Sewell; he whisks her off to America and while on board their vessel, she wreaks havoc.
Carla Gugino co-stars as Sewell's lover, and she finds herself mesmerized by the lovely but lethal mermaid.
It tends to get a little confusing at times but there is a commendable eeriness to it, but the ending is a little veiled.
