This terrific haunted-house thriller proved an unforgettable experience for 1960 audiences. Set in the mansion of a deceased scientist named Dr. Zorba, the story finds the late occult practitioner's nephew discovering a bunch of elusive spooks on the premises that can be seen only through Zorba's ghost-viewing glasses. Produced and directed by legendary showman William Castle, master of such garish, audience-pleasing gimmicks as flying skeletons and electric-shock theater seats, 13 Ghosts was hyped with an innovative process called "Illusion-O." Movie patrons were furnished with special, red-and-blue-colored glasses that allowed them to choose to see the titular specters or not. This DVD does not provide a working replica of the Illusion-O viewer (earlier copies did), but it offers both a straight, black-and-white version of the feature (no viewer necessary) and a version with the film's original tinted scenes requiring the viewer for extra fun. Also included is Castle's own introduction, in which he explains the Illusion-O technique. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:
a lot of fun to watch .......2007-04-18
I don't own this one as a DVD but I caught it on digital cable on demand, and I will say William Castle is a damn good director. I would loved to see this one in the theater. The young kid in the film was great and so was the older sister. If I saw this movie if I was younger, I think I would be doing much more with writing ghost stories than I do right now. Coming from an author who writes ghost stories either as a fictional medium or a true medium, one can really appreciate the master of gimmicks.
I saw the remake of this movie too when I was staying at my now apartment, during a party trying to fall asleep (waiting for medicine to kick in at the time since I had a bad case of bronchitis and the flu at the party in 2005.) Though William Castle's been dead for 30 years now it is amazing what the guy was able to do with the genre.
Filmed in glorious B/W and in "ILLUSION-O.......2006-07-13
Some folks may consider this movie over the top, over the hill or just lame but I---who saw 13 Ghosts in real time (1960)---considered it the best of the spooky matinee fare of its day. It had a fantastic built up to the climax of the story. All the actors and actresses were top notch. But the true power of this movie was that it filmed in glorious B/W and in "ILLUSION-O." You can't beat that combination! And those who are critical of this movie ought to take a time out from their self-imposed and sanctimonious attitude and appreciate it; directed and produced by William Castle himself. They don't get any better!
a classic ghostly horror flic .......2006-07-08
i remember as a child of 9 the first time my friends and i went to see this movie it left a lasting impression. i went home that night and certainly did not want to take my 3d viewer with me. ive always been a lover of horror movies but for some reason that one stuck. then when the new one came out so many years later, i couldnt wait to go see it, and ended up quite disappointed ! if they would of kept the same storyline and left out the r rated features, and left in the fright, it would of been 100 per cent better. i would certainly enjoy another remake sticking to more of the old classic film.
Ghostly sitcom.......2006-06-16
William Castle made his directorial career out of spooks and curses -- both human and supernatural. One of his frothier films was "13 Ghosts," which doesn't come near the caliber of his better films, but is still fun to watch as a sort of supernatural sitcom. It isn't hard to imagine this as a TV series.
The Zorba family has just had their furniture repossessed (again) when Cyrus (Donald Woods) receives a letter from young lawyer Ben Rush (Martin Milner). His reclusive uncle just died, leaving the family a mansion and a pair of goggles for ghost-viewing. Grateful for this, Cyrus moves in with his wife and kids, despite Ben's insistence that something evil is lurking in the house.
And soon the Zorba family is being plagued by the twelve ghosts, from ghostly lions to a temperamental chef. Now they want out, and fast -- but they don't realize that Ben wants them to leave so he can find the money hidden somewhere in the house. Will Ben find the money and get away with it? And who will be the thirteenth ghost haunting the house?
"13 Ghosts" is a pretty straightforward film, with straightforward characters in a straightforward situation. Basically, it's like a long sitcom episode with ghosts -- we have your basic 1960s nuclear family (working dad, housewife, two kids) encountering a problem, and sort of bumbling into a solution.
The movie was made nearly fifty years ago, which means that the ghosts aren't too convincing, especially since Castle used a short-lived visual gimmick called "Illusion-O" (which for some reason is still on the DVDs). But Castle makes up for that with some entertaining scenes like the chef-specter flinging knives around the kitchen, and generates some real eeriness in the seance scene.
The acting is pretty good on most counts, with Milner, Woods, Jo Morrow and Rosemary DeCamp turning in solid enough performances. Margaret Hamilton is outstanding as a taut, secretive medium. But Charles Herbert plays a very annoying (and rather stupid) little boy. Did Castle think it was cute to have him call his dad's office and announce "I've got a secret"?
Though it's among William Castle's lesser works, "13 Ghosts" is a lightweight, amusing "horror" movie, with a nice mix of ghosts and treasurehunting.
Gags and Gimmacks Make for a Spooky Good Time!.......2006-05-27
I had not seen this movie for some time and I am a big William Castle fan. I liked the cast, Rosemary DeCamp is always appealing and it was nice to see Marvin Milner push himself towards the dark side. Margaret Hamilton showed her usual brilliance as well. The story was solid but a bit far fetched. I found it difficult to believe that these people would stay in that house after all that had happened to them, no matter what. The gimmick of Illusion-O worked fine and was what one would come to expect from Mr. Castle however, I was disappointed to see that the DVD does not ship with the Ghost Filter as implied. Fortunately, I had some red cellophone and could enjoy the gimmick with great success. Overall, I found the film to be a bit slow but not unsatisfying. Still, it is not up to the likes of Straight Jacket or The Tingler or some of Castles other romps.

If you are looking for campy, fun, erotic, beautiful girls ... this is it. You can never go wrong with Julie Strain. If you know JS, then you know what to expect.
I recommend this movie, its what movies ar meant to be, fun and in this case erotic too,
A softcore, haunted house parody, lesbian fest........2006-02-07
13 Erotic Ghost sounded like a real winner. Tragedy strikes at an old girls school, which leaves the place haunted. Fast forward to the present day, when a film crew wants to document the ghosts. So the rest of the movie is just them observing lesbian ghost romps, except for the female member of the crew (Mia Zottoli) who also participates in the action. Overall, it was good, but there was a lot of room for improvement.
There are six sex scenes. Three are girl/girl: Mia and Nicole Specht, Felony and Aria Giovanni, and Felony and Nicole. These are all very good except for some audio problems that I'll comment on later.
Two are girl/girl/girl: Julie Strain and The Porcelain Twinz (Zen and Zero) are in both of these. Unfortunately, these scenes are the weakest in the movie. They are played mostly for comedy and don't really generate much heat.
The final scene is the best and really ends the movie on a high note. Nicole and Felony go at it again, with Mia watching. Quite a few times, Nicole and Felony step over the line into hardcore territory with no hesitation. Then Aria joins in on the action. When her needs are met, Mia decides to jump in too.
All the women are beautiful and hot, I just wish that Julie and the Twinz had been used more effectively. Other than that, the only problem is the audio. During many of the sex scenes, the overdubbing is very poor. The sounds of the actresses don't match up well at all with the action.
The 3D gimmick was a complete waste. With the glasses on, I couldn't see anything that even remotely looked 3D. Fortunately, it doesn't affect the video, and if you watch it without the glasses, it looks fine.
Retromedia has released better videos. However, if you're familiar with their stuff, and you really like lesbian action, I recommend this one.

This is not 3-D at all.......2003-09-03
If you are interested in a silly DTV movie with lots of naked girls (including Julie Strain), by all means this won't disappoint. However, if you are intrigued by the 3-D idea then forget this one. Not one second was actually shot in stereoscopic 3-D at all. What the makers have TRIED to do is exploit something called The Pulfrich Illusion. This technique can give the impression of depth in a flat movie if the camera and background move in different directions. This has been tried, usually without success, in Super Bowl half times, music videos, cartoons, even sitcoms. They did not understand how to do do it and even with the glasses on there is very little if any depth to be seen, and certainly not anything which should be advertised as being "in 3-D". Shoot out the passanger window of a car moving at 25 MPH and then watch the video with the glasses and you will see more of the pulfrich effect than you will in 13 EROTIC GHOSTS.

A B-Ghost Story with The Love Boat (Not!).......2007-06-28
This two pack contains a couple of watchable horror movies. Neither is great, but both have their moments.
"Thirteen Ghosts"
Ah yes, the ever-popular B-movie. This movie is exactly that and as with all B-movies, there will be those who like it, those who don't, and those who thought it was okay but were generally bored.
The plot has a couple of unique twists, the house is great, and I saw a death that I had not previously seen in a movie. If the twists, the house or the death fail to hold your interest or intrigue you, then you will quickly lose interest and either became bored, or you will not like the movie at all.
The story is relatively simple and some parts of it parallel other horror movies. A ghost-hunting relative (in this case, an uncle) dies (there's a twist here), leaving a huge mansion and a lot of money to a relatively poor relative. The poor relative moves his family along with assorted hangers-on and intruders into the relative's house. The deceased relative had ulterior motives for wanting his heir to move into the house (which I won't talk about - there have to be some surprises), and miscellaneous acts of gory violence ensue.
I understood early on that the ghosts appearing and disappearing, even when wearing the special glasses, was an ability that the ghosts had, but they had to appear to cause physical events. However, the popping in and out, which was initially interesting, became annoying. Some of the early manifestations had some level of scare factor. The best scenes involve a bath tub and the basement; afterward the effect was diluted as I became numb to ghosts popping in and out.
The concept that the ghosts in the basement were there to power a portal to hell was interesting, along with the technique the uncle used to unleash the ghosts and direct them to their appropriate locations.
There was a lot of acting horsepower in this movie, including Tony Shalhoub, Shannon Elizabeth, F. Murray Abraham, Matthew Dillard, and Embeth Davidtz (who also starred in "Matilda," if you can believe that). In general the acting was decent, though I struggled a couple of times with Tony Shalhoub's struggle to accept Matthew Dillard's insistence that supernatural events were occurring in the house; it felt a bit artificial. Even with that horsepower, the real star of the movie was the house, a conglomeration of glass, antiques, Latin inscriptions, and, of course, ghosts. There were several problems with the house scenes. First, the scenes of the central engine kept appearing, and ultimately began to feel like filler since these scenes didn't really advance the plot. Second, you never really knew where you were in the house other than in general terms, so while the house was big, the immensity appeared only when looking from the outside. Third, just how did Embeth Davidtz get into the house after it appeared to close up? Her answer seemed more than a stretch, perhaps something the director made up while having a martini.
This movie had a lot of potential. The basic concept was solid, and the acting horsepower unusual for a B horror movie. However, while there were flashes of excellence, overall the movie delivered only part of the goods. Those flashes of excellence pushed the movie into a 3-star rating, thus making it watchable. Forgive the parts of the movie where it drags or has plot implausibilities.
"Ghost Ship"
This movie starts almost like an episode of "Love Boat." The music is light and nearly romantic as you zoom into the ship Antonia Graza cruising the high seas with well-dressed crew and passengers. However, no sooner do you zoom onto the ship with dancing passengers than a really bad thing happens, and there is blood and horrible death.
We fast forward 40 years and meet a salvage ship crewed by a variety of nearly stereotypical characters. After a brief introduction showing how dedicated the crew members are, the salvage ship heads out to sea. During a storm the salvage ship runs into, literally, the Antonia Graza. Naturally the crew members see a huge salvage opportunity and the money to be made from that opportunity. Thus the plot of the movie is reasonably simple: return the Graza to running condition and take her to port to be able to make a fortune. Of course, a variety of eerie events occur that let you know that the Graza is not just a derelict ship waiting to be salvaged.
As the movie progresses, the wonderfully spooky atmosphere enhances what would otherwise be a run-of-the-mill ghost story. There are predictable portions of the movie, always an annoyance in any movie, but fortunately there are nearly as many unpredictable scenes. Perhaps the most interesting part of the movie is the last 15 or 20 minutes, when the fate of the ship and crew 40 years earlier is revealed in great and gory detail. Furthermore, I was not expecting what happened at the very end of the movie.
This movie is not likely to win any awards. However, the sets, the cinematography and portions of the plot made this movie worthy of a bowl of popcorn and a future re-watch. There are probably no points in the movie where I jumped or my heart leapt, but I was intrigued by the periodic hints of what happened to the ship 40 years earlier, and what the ship was doing during the time from 40 years ago to today. I recommend this movie for a dark and stormy night with the wind howling and rain pouring.
Good Luck!
