British horror/comedy Shaun of the Dead is a scream in all senses of the word. I liked the movie a lot when I rented it. After seeing "Hot Fuzz" by the same team, I knew I had to see the movie again. It's just as good as I remember it and I caught new things watching it again. I invited a few friends over to watch it and they liked it too.

English Humor And Zombies! What a Combination!.......2007-06-28

I was never a huge fan of Zombie flicks. George Romero's Night Of The Living Dead scared me so bad when I was eight years old that I didn't sleep for the next decade. So when it comes to the lurching, head-snacking undead, I tend to steer the other way. Well, too many of my friends have commented on Shaun Of The Dead, so I had to take a look for myself. I'm a big fan of dry British humor and Shaun Of The Dead is packed with that as well as flesh-scarfing zombies. The entire scene where Shaun goes to the liquor store to by his morning drink and completely ignores all the signs (the bloody handprints on the glass of the cooler door, the dead bodies sprawled in the yards and streets) that the zombies have come to roost. Hysterical! Along with his slacker cohort Ed, Shaun decides to go over to his mum's house and rescue her, while taking care of his zombie-bitten step-father with a cricket bat. The laughs, entertwined with the gore, make for one trippy movie. Filled with absurd situations, Shaun Of The Dead will have you rolling while you flinch. Great!

A Somewhat Dissenting Opinion.......2007-06-05

Yes. Rent it or buy it. It's not a bad movie, rather entertaining in fact. You know the plot - standard (by now) end of the world flesh eating zombie flick with a double dollop of dry British humor and sufficient gore. Good script. However, I had a few problems with this movie. First off, it's amusing rather than roll on the floor hilarious as others have stated. Secondly, it is extremely derivative of Romero's films - so much so, that I found it both distracting and a little annoying. Simply, Romero did all the heavy lifting laying the groundwork in his initial trilogy, and this film apes rather than adds like 28 Days Later. This one borders on plagiarism. Goes to the well too often with the overly used "loved one is bitten by zombie and now we have to kill it..." cliche. And, while the production values are surprisingly good, the direction is at a banal TV movie level. You've heard this from critics before - "doesn't know what kind of movie it wants to be..." Imagine if Monty Python and the Holy Grail flip-flopped between a silly spoof of the legend of King Arthur and a serious treatment of the mythology like John Boorman's Excalibur. Or, if "Crusher" lops off Curly's head with an ax as The Three Stooges are being chased around haunted mansion, and Moe pauses for a few minutes to tearily weep and grieve the loss of his brother before Crusher sneaks up behind Larry, Moe tells Larry to quit breathing on him, Larry gives his pateneted, "Nyaaaaahh" and they resume woop, woop, wooping in circles around the halls again, stepping over Curly's "corp-us" ; ) to escape Crusher as he weilds his ax.

Entertaining, worth a watch, but to call this derivative work a "homage" is being too kind, it's not as funny as its hype, and it simply flip-flops between horror and comedy to often, too severely, and too jarringly. The direction is also mundane. This one was saved mainly due to its energetic cast and a good script. Still, these criticisms aside, I couldn't say I wasn't entertained.

Consistantly funny, yet amazingly believable, take on a zombie invasion. Characters well drawn and full of subtle details that make rewatching fun.

I originally saw this movie because the previews looked undeniably hilarious. I waited of course until the movie was available to rent because I was cautious regarding the type of humor that might be in the film. I was pleasantly surprised to find the movie wildly entertaining with very little gratuitous humor. This British movies' premise is a spoof of the many American zombie movies (and the single British one), where the main character Sean finds himself battling zombies with presumably his best friend and roommate in order to save his as of recently ex-girlfriend. The mild manner of lead character Sean is ultimately what balances the hilarity of the movie, creating a sense of seriousness on the part of the characters, one which is ultimately the catalyst of humor. It is classic British humor and very enjoyable indeed.

Chapter three of George Romero's mighty zombie trilogy has big footsteps to follow. Night of the Living Dead was a classic that revitalized a certain corner of the cinema, and Dawn of the Dead was nothing short of epic. "Day Of The Dead" is, without a doubt, one of the GORIEST films ever made. The premise is pretty simple. A medical team, and a military unit are holed up in an underground missile silo, occaisionally flying a helicopter up and down the coast, looking for fellow survivors, while unbelievably gruesome experiments are being performed by one of the medical personnel on captured "specimen" zombies, in an attempt at finding why the dead are walking. The soldiers just want to shoot them in the head, as that's all that has been proven to stop them; the problem? The zombies outnumber the living by at least 400,000 to one. There's just too many. With a way to modify their behavior, maybe the survivors can stand a chance, but the odds are slim to none of such an insane idea working.

Of course, tensions mount. The claustrophobic living conditions, the bleak atmosphere, and physical and mental strain are taking a very heavy toll, as hope is quickly vanishing. They just want to get out of there, but, as Doctor Logan says, "...where would you go?" People critical of this movie say it has too slow a start, but I say no. The script focuses mainly on how these people are coping, and they aren't coping very well. Detractors say the dialogue has too much shouting, but I wonder how these people themselves would act in such egregious, horrible conditions. No, it is a very well-written script, albeit not George Romero's original one, which everyone says is far superior. It is a very tense screenplay, depicting, in what I would call a very realistic scenario. Not the world being overrun with walking dead, of course, but imagine a somewhat diverse group of people who really can't stand one another, being trapped in a situation where they must cooperate, but just can't anymore. A bloodbath is just one bad day away.

The special make-up effects are among Tom Savini's best work. The zombies in this installment are more decayed looking, which ties in with how the story unfolds in the series. In "Night..." most of them look somewhat ordinary, and the black and white film just makes it eerie. In "Dawn... (the original)" Most of the undead are just discolored, with a few really nasty ones, as time has taken its toll. In this installment, in 1985, seventeen years after the contageon has started, most of them are in the final stages of post mortem rot. It really is what the world would be if such an awful thing could take place.

One little subtlety in the script, that looks like an inconsistency, but isn't, would be when Rhodes decides to start executing people. The people he shoots do not get back up. And one of the soldiers suicides after being bitten in the shoulder by a zombie. He doesn't get back up, and the hordes of undead feast on his carcass. These deaths happened underground, not from infected zombie bites. Keeping in mind, the reason for this outbreak was in "Night..." in 1968, and the reason was some kind of radioactive fallout from a contaminated space probe. The air above ground is contaminated. Hence, underground, and no reanimation. Plus, two of the deaths were from gunshots to the head, guaranteeing no reanimation.

It is a simple, yet very complex story, and some people don't get the ending. It's simple, really. The first scene (spoiler here) is a dream sequence, and after all the nightmarish events of the story, the last remaining characters flee to an island somewhere out in the ocean, and apparently one fell asleep, just to wake up on the island. Physical exhaustion. The last part of the escape, jumping to the island, is nothing more that a time-lapse in the script.

Yes, this is a very good movie of this type, one that I feel is underappreciated.

zombie love.......2007-05-30

Don't get me wrong, here--this is a film with flaws. It had quite a low budget even for its time, and it is nothing if not completely over-the-top (but in a good way). The blood is a little too red. Some of the zombies are just people wearing black and blue spray-on paints. The ending is a bit lacking, and far too comic-booky/Hollywood for some.

However, it's still cleverly done, and once you get into it, the cut corners will fly past your vision. There are some special effects that are still amazing to this day, the characters are interesting, the dialogue is well done and at times intentionally hilarious, and it's got some of the most ridiculously gory and memorable death scenes, right up there with the sleeping bag sequence from Friday the 13th and Phantasm's first death-by-sentinel-sphere.

I can't bring myself to compare it to the other "Dead" films, because it has a distinctly different feel. It's gritty, harshly lit, and consummately '80s.

As for the zombie called "Bub"--be prepared for a rather confusing experience. I had mixed feelings about Bub at first, but now I think I'm in love with him. He is a mouldering, humanoid Gentle Ben. Sherman Howard's performance is enthusiastic, and, dare I say, cute. He obviously got a kick out of the role, and it's always nice to see actors having as much fun as he obviously did (and said as much, in the supplemental materials, which are a blast to watch in and of themselves). Don't underestimate ol' Bub, though. He proves himself to be quite the hardass in the end, even if he does love Beethoven. It's worth noting that a lot of the scenes involving Bub were mostly ad-libbed, which, if you're aware of the fact, adds to the experience.

Long story short, I love the hell out of this movie, and it's probably my favorite of the original trilogy. It's a fun romp, and if you can get past and/or embrace the idea of an adorable gun-toting zombie, you're guaranteed a rip-snortin' good time.

Watch the extras, too! It's worth it if only for the hilarious behind-the-scenes videos of actors struggling with the makeup. Buh huh huhh!

Not very good........2007-05-29

People who are enjoying newer zombie movies like the remake of Dawn of the Dead and 28 Days/Weeks Later may want to steer clear of this one. It's full of rock stupid, bickering, cruel human characters that scream obscenities at each other. It's not good. It's really painful to watch, and I think it'll turn your soul to tar and your brain to oatmeal with repeated viewings.

The best zombie movies in my opinion are the ones that make you feel like it's the end of the world, with violent death around every corner. It's you, with perhaps a small band of survivors, trying to hold out against the destruction of civilization and the human race. This one makes me root for the zombies, and frankly, it loses me there.

I highly recommend you skip this one, and see Dawn of the Dead (2004) or 28 Days Later instead.

Deserves a second look..........2007-05-17

When I first watched "Day of the Dead" many years ago, I must say I thought it was boring. My mind was not ready for the philisophical musings, the complicated relationships, and the strong decisions made by all of the characters.

Watching it now, I realize what an outstanding movie it really is. The plan "B" of the original idea, this movie stands out with a deep story and lots of zombie gore.

This movie, The Quick and the Dead starring Sam Elliott should not be confused with The Quick and the Dead starring Sharon Stone. How these movies ended up with the same title is a mystery to me.

This western has action, romance, historical fiction, beautiful scenery, and the most rugged, handsome, cowboy ever, complete with his great horsemanship skills and own stunts. Sam Elliott is almost like a "guardian angel" who can speak the Sioux language and protects a single family who is traveling out west from danger when it's least expected. Good story line, the bad guys are great too.

Sam Elliott played his part, as always, with great "presence" and appeal!
The story was layed out and poceeded immediately without a lot of non-essential acting on everyone's part. We found it very good and entertaining. I would recommend it to anyone who like a good western with a bit of humor, romance and typical Louis L'Amour.

A favorite cowboy in a disappointing western.......2006-12-17

Sam Elliot is one of my favorite cowboys yet he suffers from a story here that does not fit his usual noble toughman image. He is not the clear heroic character but instead one who seems bent on wife-stealing. His motives for helping the family he finds under siege are clearly self-seeking and only in the end does he give any indication otherwise. If you are a classic L'Amour western fan, this will likely be a disappointment and a confusion to you. It may be more to the "real-life" type but myself, I watch movies to escape real life, not to be reinforced in my cynicism. Still, Mr. Elliot's portrayal of a difficult and disappointing character saves this one from a less than mediocre rating.

Since I am a huge zombie/horror fan,I read the reviews for Day Of The Dead 2 and how bad the film was, I decided to take a chance on it...and there were some good parts that I thought was good...but when the zombies started to talk.....that pretty much blew it for me. I was dissapointed..maybe sometimes u shoul listen to the majority of the people!!

I really don't know how to describe this film. My friends and I had to actually stop it halfway through and finish it later because the first 45 minutes or so are

BORING.

There are several scenes that are like, five minutes of people lying in bed coughing, as in: Shot of character lying in bed coughing. Cut to next character lying in bed coughing. Cut to next character lying in b HEY DO YOU THINK MAYBE THEY ARE GETTING SICK? WHAT NO THAT'S CRAZY TALK

I won't even get into the special effects (and believe me, they ARE special) but I will say this: remember in grade school, when you would put a thin layer of Elmer's glue on the back of your hand and peel it off because school makes you bored enough to do things like that? Well, say hello to what I'd wager is the most believable effect in this whole sad pile of dorkiness.

I loved the original Day of the Dead so much (yeah, I am one of the "trolls" as Mr. Romero himself so affectionately refers to us, haha) that I feel it is my duty to publicly ridicule this turd. It's hysterical that this even has the real logo on it. Also "contagium" is a dumb word and I swear the case the rental DVD came in smells like feet.

This is the true meaning of suffering. This is pain, distilled into its purest form. The disc? That's not plastic. Each "DVD" consists of approximately one thousand tormented souls, refined, melted down to the clearest of plastic-like materials and compressed into a convincingly disc-like shape, after which it is blessed (by which I mean teabagged) thrice by Satan himself, packaged in a box made of cast brimstone, and shrinkwrapped in the specially prepared flesh of some fell beast that happens to have skin which looks exactly like shrinkwrap. Did I mention this movie is a bit bad? Because it is. Oh, it is. I hurt so much inside.

Seriously (?) though, I have to give it three stars if only for the in-jokes it has spawned, some of which make me laugh until I puke at the mere thought. I conversely feel total revulsion and some kind of terrible giddy spastic glee when I think about it. It defies description. Hell, I just described it and I still can't quite gather my senses enough to interpret what the hell I just said. Watch it in the company of friends, beer, and a couple of large pizzas and you will feel slightly less miserable about being alive. Watch it and you will laugh; however, it will be the choked and tortured laughter of a man insane. Watch it, and you will know Agony.

But you know what?

I'm going to watch it again. That's right, I am. I want to see if I really saw what I think I saw. After that I'm going to have a few shots and cry myself to sleep. Even after all this, I can't say I hate it. This movie and my feelings for it make me question the meaning of life itself. I am confused, deep in my heart. You're kidding, right? The only good film in the trilogy is the origonal. How dare you try to continue the story of something that cannot be continued. The orgional was good enough. Leave it there. Just because you want money, don't ruin such wonderfull entertainment.

I didn't even stay awake through all of the movie, it was so bad! I'd rather watch Barney with my 2-year-old!

This third sequel in the terrifyng Candyam series is a further decline, as you can feel more sympathy for the character as it does explain all along- a mob lynched and hazed him, pasting honey on his body and bringing a swarm of bees to eat him alive. It was about inter racial marriage, which again was almost unbearable to watch, and what was even more scary was that this happens in real life. A true old fashioned ghetto which again is the closest thing to a hell on earth.

The third in the series derived from a concept by Clive Barker, "Day of the Dead" (they can't even come up with their own subtitle) staggers down the well-trodden path already navigated by the "Halloween" and "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies: that is, taking a decent concept and flushing it down the toilet. The original movie was a near horror masterpiece and relied on atmosphere rather than gore, while the first sequel was bearable if completely routine. This one is just a load of rubbish. Donna D'Errico, from Baywatch (what a spectacle of credibility), stars as Caroline McKeever, the great great granddaughter of the feared Candyman (Tony Todd once again), once a normal man but now an apparition who appears to slaughter everyone around you if you dare to say his name five times in front of a mirror. Caroline says his name five times in front of a mirror and up he pops to murder her nearest and dearest. As the Candyman hacks his way through various bad actors, Caroline teams up with new pal David (Nick Corri) to find a collection of paintings knocked up by the Candyman while he was still alive, which may hold the key to stopping him.

There's not a single thing here that isn't scavenged from the first "Candyman" film and every other ropy horror movie produced since caveman days. The screenplay is so lazy it can't even be bothered to connect half the characters to the plot, the photography is bright and glossy, which is at odds with what's supposed to be a dark story, while nothing in the direction adds any atmosphere at all. Anyone could have directed this movie, so little effort has been put in to make it scary, while the ending is an outrageous cop out. No thought has gone in to developing themes or structuring the plot because no one here is talented enough to give this movie any depth beyond having D'Errico running around in a variety of tight vests. The rest of the performances are poor too, although none are quite as bad as D'Errico's pathetic attempts at screaming and breathing erratically. Surely more can be done with characters like the Candyman than the constant repetition of scenes where he appears to stick his hook through someone's stomach. The fact that the makers of this movie think Candyman is so terrifying that the very sight of him just standing there will strike fear into our hearts is a sign that they just can't be bothered even to try something a bit different. Clive Barker may not be the master of horror as every at first claimed him to be, but he's right about one thing: the sequels to his movies are garbage.

Horrendous.......2005-09-26

Clive Barker did a good job on the original Candyman. It was truly a cut above most horror movies. The second movie was medicore at best in my opinion but this one was just horrendous. There is no suspense at all in this movie and the acting is deplorable. Donna D'Errico is soft on the eyes but too bad she talks. Lets hope this is the last sequel.

I will not give "Candyman 3: Day of the Dead" a serious analysis because it is so stupid and to be frank, is not even worthy of a review other than to say that this TRASH sucks just like the rest of the series, but also, this movie goes above beyond being horrible and is the epitome of the word "lame". THIS MOVIE "F"ing SUCKS!!! Please pardon me for my language, but after watching this movie, I am sure you can understand my distress after wasting my time on this complete and utter rubbish.

The opening shot shows the family silver, lovingly and lusciously photographed. . . the camera pans out to see the rest of the Great House and its more tawdry doings.

The sandwich of the story is intricate, multi-layered, and shows the shifting powers of Morse and Lewis as Morse declines physically but continues to mentor Lewis up to the last possible moment. The series has always focused on the character of Morse and the relationship between the two detectives, but this episode brings both these strands home beautifully.

Then, at the end, Lewis speaks to the daughter who had to sell the family silver we saw in the opening shot (to pay off a blackmailer). It's an upper class shame that she doesn't feel Lewis fully appreciates. "Morse would understand," she says. And he would have.

Morse understood everything with such subtlty. That is what great books and literature and a lifetime of melacholy can train you for. . . being open to the clues of the world. May we all take heart from the life of this fictional character.

A very good conclusion to the Morse TV series.

As always, John Thaw is excellent as the Chief Inspector. And Oxford is delightful.... The background music adds to the touch of the mystery.

The book written by Colin Dexter has been adapted. Fans of this, could also get the book or book on tape, to read the extended story.

BFS Cropped this WIDESCREEN episode........2004-08-21

This great closing episode of the great series by the great John Thaw has one flaw, the picture has been cropped to fit a full-frame 1:33-1 screen.

By the time this episode was produced, England had switched over to the 1:85-1 wide-screen telecast. Currently PBS is showing this in its original wide-screen format so I was able to compare the pictures. This razor sharp DVD is indeed cropped on the sides.

Fortunately the producers realized that it would be shown cropped in some markets. So nothing important is framed at the sides of the picture, the action all takes place in the center of the picture. You will not know any picture is missing unless you see the wide-screen version. It is just a shame that BFS decided not to release an anamorphic wide-screen edition!

Everything else is excellent about the disc. A sharp clean picture with solid colors, clear sound, and bonus material!

A REMORSEFUL ADAPTATION.......2002-07-19

There's been a murder here, but it's not the one you think. The adaptation of Colin Dexter's "The Remorseful Day" has left a stinking corpse of what was a masterful story, an exquisite exposition of the "Parsifal" like heart of Endeavour Morse. The culprits? Rebecca Eaton and her doltish cadre of American PBS writers who have distinguished themselves in missing the entire point of the book.
Mind you, if you have not read the book, you'll enjoy this video. All the great elements are there: John Thaw essays Morse brilliantly, Kevin Whately turns in a terrific performance as Lewis, although he is compelled to deliver a totally ridiculous and melodramatic "Morse is dead!" proclamation. He acquits himself and moves on. All the supporting players, the family intrigues, the score, the filmwork - all executed brilliantly. So, you'd have little reason to suspect something is awry.

But there is and it is as great a disservice to a book as I can ever remember. Now, that argument can be made about a lot of transfers from book to film, but in this case, and with this series, which has been so faithful to Dexter's works, it is just incomprehensible. I can only conclude that it is due to the American fascination with smoothing out any sense of nuance in order to champion the easily digestible. I should tell you where the crime lies, but that's not fair to anyone who really would enjoy what actually happened in the story. Suffice it to say that much of the story turns on the Parsifal legend, and how in fact the pure of heart are vindicated with vision of the grail, whatever form that grail may take. So, Endeavour Morse is vindicated in a coda that lingers with you long, long after you put the book down. Throughout the film, there are efforts made to quote not only Wagner's theme for "Parsifal", but Han Knappertsbusch's direction of it in the 1962 score. Why? Well, Morse makes reference to it in discussion with Lewis, and it fits with the T.S Elliott quote that includes the title of the story, plus Knappertsbusch was himself the most Morse like of conductors in every way imaginable, and in 1962 was well aware that he was dying. So with all of the main clues in tact, why on earth Eaton and her merry band of nitwits elected to miss the point is not only unimaginable but unforgiveable.

Certainly, enjoy this DVD for what it is. I assure you that if you read the book, you will want, as I want, to grab the murderous crutch and shove it where PBS don't broadcast. The most heinous murder in Oxford was committed in Boston. Shame on Eaton. Perhaps one day Dexter will insist on a reshoot, although Thaw is not well, and Whately may have no interest in any further casting as Lewis. Somehow, the record, as it is in the book, needs to be set straight.

Morse's End Predates John Thaw's by Only a Few Years.......2002-02-23

Sad to see that the great actor, John Thaw has passed away from esophageal cancer.

This episode is on par with all of the other great episodes of this outstanding series. Thaw's portrayal of an intellectual, world-weary British detective who confronts often complex and involved cases of murder and other crimes.

Now episode to this point really brought home to me how much I loved Inspector Morse. I was actually quite angry to see the great Inspector face such health problems (an understatement), but in light of John Thaw's actual illness, I guess it is to be expected.

Low budget and brown but not bad.........2006-08-09

It's interesting that with the advent of video cameras getting cheaper that independent films get made en masse. With that within reguard this one isn't bad. The lighting is good and stands out...it should it's sunlight. It was pretty funny and chances are I'm going to see it with the directors commentary...the drug scene I thought was a bit too long but beyond that it was good.

This movie was truly a trip, I really don't know what to make of it, even though it looks like a movie that was just put together by some brothers with one camcorder, and no lights, I still in a lot of ways found it interesting. I think all the people in the movie have a lot of potential. Jarell whom I've worked with before on a project, acts a lot like Chris Tucker, but if he can just find some of his own style and mix his Chris Tucker style, that boy will go places. I would have liked to have seen the Asian girl (Kumi) whom I also worked with, I wanted to see her more in the film, she is funny. The one that really got me, was the little boy, that little brother is FUNNY. I was a little
uneasy about his cursing at his age, but I kept over looking it cause that little ni@#$% is funny, If he keeps going he is going to be a star.

Another thing I found very interesting, is the producer/director did a low budget movie like this, with some up coming comedians with a lot of potential, and end up having it distributed by Artisan Entertainment, very clever Joe!

Wow, I've never seen a movie so awful in all my life. This movie is the result of 8 or 9 friends getting together one day and thinking to themselves, "Hey! Lets make a movie! With our connections we could make SOME money."

I saw this movie at a drive-in theater in Memphis Tennessee when it was first released.
It was the first of it's kind and scared the bejabbers out of everybody who saw it.
I told a friend about it and invited him to go but (Believe it or not) the local censor had banned it after the first showing.
The censor was taken to court and told he couldn't ban a movie and shortly thereafter it was showing again.
The thing was so scary for it's time that the drive-in had to extend the concession period, (The break between movies so people could go to the concession stand and buy food and popcorn) because people were afraid to leave their cars.
I took friends on several occasions to see it and almost every time when the movie was over people would sit in their cars waiting for someone else to make the first move.
After a short period the first car door would open, then another and then another.
People would line up and head for the concession stand together.
Inevitably some joker somewhere in the line would loudly begin to moan and go into his staggering zombie routine.
The girls would scream and everybody would break and run for the concession stand at the same time.
Years later when my son was about ten and had a friend spending the night we rented some movies including this one and I told them they were going to see the scariest movie ever made.
Fifteen minutes into it they were bored and wanted to watch something else.
Go figure.
The thing still gives me the willies.
I guess you had to be there when it first came out.
As a piece of movie history it's worth owning and knowing some of the history might make it more enjoyable for those who were not there.

I didn't care for this movie. I guess that has to due with the fact that the film looks old, and the storyline is basically the same as any other zombie movie. You will know where the plot is going without having to even see the film! It seems every zombie film has the same story direction.

However, this is an older film we're talking about here, which means it can be considered one of the originators. That makes it an above average movie on my scale, but one that would be quite okay to skip.

Once upon a time a young girl and her brother traveled three hours from home to place flowers on the grave of their father. The brother started teasing his sister, telling her in a creepy voice, "They're coming to get you, Barbara." However, the joke ended up being on him because they were coming to get Barbara, only they got him first.

I first saw "Night of the Living Dead" when I came home one afternoon and discovered that the Iowa City Public Library Channel on cable was showing the film. I have to admit, I was rather surprised that this cult classic horror film would be on at a time when kids could come home and discover it on television (one of the living dead is naked and they do like to eat human flesh), but Iowa is a state that thinks caucuses are a good way of selecting presidential nominees, so what can I say? But this is a horror movie that is even scary in the daytime with all the lights on.

"The Night of the Living Dead" is a horror classic, which is rather surprising when you take into account that director George A. Romero made the film in 1968 for $114,000 without a cast of first time actors (extras who playing the zombies were paid $1 and a t-shirt that said "I was a zombie on Night of the Living Dead"). Filmed in black and white with Romero as the cinematographer, this film has a technical proficiency that is missing from other low-budget classics like "Dementia 13" and "Carnival of Souls." You can take or leave the various sequels to this film, but this one has to be on everyone's Top 10 list when it comes to horror films.

The horror comes from the situation and the simple effectiveness of the slow moving, silent zombies in their growing numbers, their arms reaching out to find human flesh to eat. Barbara (Judith O'Dea) runs to an abandoned house, where she is joined by Ben (Duane Jones). After fending off the first attack of the living dead, they discover five more people hiding in the basement: Harry Cooper (Karl Hardman), his wife, Helen (Marilyn Eastman), and their daughter (Kyra Schon), along with a young couple, Tom (Keith Wayne) and Judy (Judith Ridley). Harry wants to hide out in the basement, but refuses to be trapped down there, and the two spend more time arguing about what to do than doing anything. They listen to the radio and watch the TV, learning that the dead are rising to eat the living, and try to figure out a way of getting out of the death trap in which they find themselves. Meanwhile, the little girl in the basement is getting weaker.

The only real weakness in the film is the attempt to explain why the dead are walking around as flesh-eating ghouls (which is, I believe, redundant), which has something to do with a satellite and scientific mumbo-jumbo that really does not mean anything to the people trying to survive against the growing horde of zombies. Fortunately, the "why" does not matter in this story; just the "how" in terms of taking these creatures down. Besides, if anything clinches this one it is the end of the film, both with its final twist, and the use of grainy still photographs to show the end of the tale. Few horror movies, whatever their budgets, have an ending this memorable.
