When American audiences first saw Mario Bava's 1963 horror trilogy, it wasn't the same film he had made in Italy. Finding it too terrifying for kids (imagine that!), AIP pictures trimmed it of violence and intensity, rescored it, and renamed it in order to cash in on the success of Black Sunday. New tongue-in-cheek introductions with costar Boris Karloff were added, the segments were rearranged, and one segment was completely rewritten in the dubbing. It was a good film even in its butchered form, but the original Italian version is excellent. The correctly ordered stories begin with "The Telephone," a gripping, ornate thriller that anticipates Bava's later "giallo" horror classics such as Blood and Black Lace. (In the American version, lesbian overtones were removed and the escaped criminal killer was turned into a vengeful ghost.) Karloff stars as a demonic, wild-haired patriarch in the eerie "The Wurdulak," a gorgeous vampire tale shot on misty, menacing sets. The masterpiece of the collection is "The Drop of Water," a chilling ghost story with shiver inducing imagery: the piercing dead eyes of the restless corpse will haunt you long after the film is over. Bava's original framing sequence ends with a playful tribute to the magic of moviemaking and storytelling, a sweet coda to remind us that it's only a movie.

The print suffers slightly from wear and tear and water damage but the colors are sharp and vivid. It's a bit disconcerting to hear Karloff dubbed in Italian, but that's a small price to pay for seeing the film in its original, uncut form. The DVD also features an extensive gallery of production and promotional stills, biographies, and liner notes by Bava historian Tim Lucas. --Sean Axmaker

Five of Mario Bava's best films are included in this box set, minus his forays into eroticism, like Blood and Black Lace. Still, the lines between sexual pathos and violence blur in these selections that influenced not only other famed directors of Giallo, such as Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci, but also spawned the American golden age in horror, led by directors such as John Carpenter. Three black and white films here exemplify Bava's trademark use of chiaroscuro mixed with suspense-building cinematography first developed in early horror classics like Nosferatu and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. In the Hitchcock-inspired Evil Eye (1963), tourist Nora Davis (Leticia Roman) witnesses a murder but can't convince police of the crime. Kill Baby Kill! (1966) is the prototype for all little girl-ghost films. Dr. Paul Eswai (Giacomo Rossi-Stuart) is recruited to solve the mystery of Villa Graps, where Baroness Graps (Giana Vivaldi) reanimates her dead daughter, Melissa, by killing innocent villagers. In Black Sunday (1960), the witch Princess Asa Vajda comes back from the dead to inhabit her look-alike, Katia, both played by Barbara Steele, the original femme fatale to which all brunette vamps, like Soledad Miranda (Vampyros Lesbos) and Elvira, are indebted.

In Technicolor, Bava's fantastically rainbow-lit films underpin the director's fascination with connections between our world and those imagined. Black Sabbath (1963) is a trilogy hosted by Boris Karloff, who also stars as a Russian vampire in its segment, "The Wurdalak." "The Telephone," and "The Drop of Water," in which a nurse, Helen Correy (Jacqueline Pierreux), steals a ring then fears that her dead medium patient seeks revenge, are acute studies of guilt and paranoia. The Viking saga, Knives of the Avenger (1966), like Bava's Hercules in the Haunted World, spawned several sword and sorcery films, while protagonist Rurik's (Cameron Mitchell's) knife-throwing is indeed entertaining. Screened back to back, these films provide evidence of Bava's influence in the horror genre. Moreover, they reveal Bava's deep understanding of horror's many facets, whether sexually, psychologically, or physically based. —Trinie Dalton

5 out of 5 stars Finally..........2007-06-23

Kill Baby Kill is a flic choc full of foreboding atmosphere that can only be appreciated in the original wide-screen aspect. Contrary to Amazon's misleading information, this version IS widescreen with the option to view in Italian w/subtitles. The dubbed version is there for those who dislike subtitles. I paid 19.99 for an earlier crappy edition so needless to say I find this collection offered at 19.99 to be a gift from Amazon. Clear colors and sound make this DVD a joy to watch; great nostalgic fun. I can't wait to view the other titles, also in original theatric aspect, a bonus for me. Am I in Horror Heaven? (I bought an extra set as a present for a relative; no borrowing, please.)

5 out of 5 stars great collection.......2007-04-10

Sorry, but giving this set a bad rating just because the AIP-versions aren't included is stupid in my opinion.
This box includes 5 fantastic movies by Bava (yes, even "Knives Of The Avenger" is a great one) in overall amazing quality with very good bonus features. I believe there is a good reason that AB didn't include the different cuts of "The Girl Who Knew Too Much" and "3 Faces Of Fear": legal issues. If these are solved, hopefully we see these versions someday on DVD (though the only one that really interests me is "The Evil Eye". "Black Sabbath" would just be nice because of Karloff's own dubbing,
but everything else is clearly inferior to the italian version.)
Until then - enjoy what's IN this box, it is an amazing value for the cheap price. Of course many people who want to buy this, already may have different DVDs of some of the movies in there - so everyone must decide for themselves if it is worth getting.

3 out of 5 stars Bittersweet Box Set.......2007-04-09

It's great to have all of these Mario Bava titles in one set. The transfers are really beautiful, and a revelation to those of us with memories of grainy 16mm TV prints. "Black Sunday's" monochrome atmosphere looks particularly lush in this set. "Kill Baby Kill" is a major upgrade to the crummy, desaturated DVD I have from Image.
But they really SHOULD have included BOTH US and Italian versions of the star attraction, "Black Sabbbath". Or at least cut in Karloff's actual voice to the Italian version! Why not re-edit the way it should be? I still rushed out to buy this set, but cannot give it five stars due to the pre-release publicity which stated BOTH Black Sabbath versions would be in the box set. Anchor Bay owes all of us an apology or a free DVD of the English version.

4 out of 5 stars Very Pleased Overall.......2007-04-06

I'll echo what a previous reviewer wrote concerning the absence of the American International versions of "Mask of Satan" ("Black Sunday"), and "Three Faces of Fear" ("Black Sabbath"). I had fully anticipated their inclusion in this set. After watching the trailer, I know I'm going to need the AIP release "Black Sunday." What really sold me on this set was the opportunity to finally see and own the international edit of "Black Sabbath," and I was frankly unprepared for the vivid clarity of this transfer, and that of "Kill, Baby...Kill." It's great to finally have these films the way they were meant to be seen (however I'm not a fan of English or any other subtitles; English dubs would have been nice).

I haven't gotten around to watching "Knives of the Avenger" or "The Evil Eye," so I can't really weigh in on them. I've been generally pleased with the extras on these discs, the one caveat being the inclusion of the same trailers on each disc. Couldn't they have expanded this selection? As with so many other movie box sets in my collection, the package art's bizarre! Additionally, a decipherable illustration or two of Mario Bava would have been a fitting homage.

On VHS I have the AIP version of "Black Sabbath," and really enjoy it, but seeing this uncut Italian dub I can understand now why this was Bava's favorite film. It's very evident that AIP really went wild in the editing room--it's much more interesting in its original form. Having an educational commentary was also a selling point in my decision to shell out for this; honestly, I don't regret buying this set and I haven't even seen the whole thing yet. If you've been curious about the works of Mario Bava, and you don't mind the subtitles, you won't see finer transfers for his three best films (BLACK SABBATH, BLACK SUNDAY, AND KILL BABY KILL) included here.

However, having said all that, I have to put in a plug for the production of an edition of "Kill Baby Kill" with its killer new WS transfer, but in English and with Tim Lucas' commentary accompanying it. Another highly worthy title of Bava's deserving a more respectable issue is "Planet of the Vampires." When these two finally get the treatment they deserve, a large void will have been filled.

Hasta, and May the Force be With you!

This chronicle of the heaviest metal band of all time will be an eye-opener to those who only know Ozzy Osbourne as that goofball dad on MTV: 30 years ago, he fronted one of the hardest-hitting and loudest rock groups around. An hour-long compilation of interviews, videos, and performance footage that, while short on length, is long on substance, The Black Sabbath Story, Volume One unearths several vintage clips that show the band at its artistic and commercial zenith: "N.I.B." and "War Pigs," filmed at concerts in Paris; a performance of "Paranoid" from Belgian TV; and a rarely seen video of "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath."

Ozzy, happily, doesn't have much to say beyond belting out the tunes in his trademark yelp. When a female reporter sticks a mike in front of him after Sabbath's performance at the legendary California Jam, his incoherence is truly sublime. It's up to guitarist Tony Iommi to more lucidly recount various aspects of the band's history. --Kevin Filipski

5 out of 5 stars You Won't Regret Owning It.......2007-01-29

I bought this video on VHS over 10 years ago and nearly wore it out. Great footage of the original Sabath line - up. We get to hear a new song called "War Pigs" from the "new album", with Bill Ward playing a single bass drum kit. The whole band wears jeans and sneakers in early footage and in a few short years Bill has a double bass and the band is wearing platform shoes w/satin (?) pants. This is the best overview of Sabbath from the 70's. The interviews are apparently from the era before the Reunion when apparently they didn't anticipate Ozzy returning. It's actually a pleasure hearing the interviews with Tony and Geezer without Ozzy's big mouth. Another great thing about this video is that the interviews are in between songs not during them and now that it's on DVD you can actually skip over the parts that you don't like. Also includes bonus track "A Hard Road" not on the VHS version. Tony and Geezer tell Ozzy stories and reminince about the early days. Personal favorite is the one about Ozzy beating up a doped up fan who was beating up his little boy in the audience. Overall, it seems short and will make you want to rewind (skip backward) to hear it again. This isn't one of those documentaries that drags on forever (e.g. Some Kind of Monster - ugh), but rather keeps you watching and holds your interest. Also it doesn't contain any back biting or bad mouthing just good natured remininces from Tony and Geezer.

5 out of 5 stars Great history of Sabbath.......2006-07-26

I have had this video now for almost 10 years, and it is now available on DVD. But to this date, there is no DVD that even compairs to this one as far as the history and footage shown. The live videos and rare tunes played in this documentary is worth every penny i originally paid for it. I still can't believe the footage from Ontario motor Speedway in 1974, showing the massive crowd that Sabbath played, just spectacular. This video covers through early 1978, and touches on Ozzy leaving, but you'll need tape two to see that. On DVD, the 1978 year is completed on DVD 1 ending with "a hard road" and ozzy leaving. So this is a must have for any sabbath fan, and don't foget to buy the Black sabbath story Volume 2 to complete the set.

3 out of 5 stars A tad disappointing..........2005-12-31

I enjoyed the band interviews that are interspersed throughout the DVD--although there were no (recent) Ozzy interviews--and particularly the interview with the band's first manager, Jim Simpson, who had some interesting insights to share on the band's origins. I also thought the "Band History" section of the DVD as a whole was pretty informative (there's even a brief Cozy Powell interview).

Having said all that, I was disappointed in the overall production of this DVD from the moment I opened it up. The sound isn't all that great, but I can forgive that considering how old a lot of the footage is. But the major sins are:

* No insert booklet (That spells C-H-E-A-P. I mean, come on!)
* The "Extras" section is comprised solely of two 90-second interviews with Tony Iommi, in which he grumbles about the state of modern heavy metal, and Bill Ward, and I'm not really sure just what he was talking about.
* The "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" video has almost two minutes lopped off the end
* The live footage of "Symptom of the Universe" and "Snowblind" was taken from the "Never Say Die" tour. I would rather have seen footage from when those songs were released.

I noticed in a couple of the reviews that some people mentioned the DVD being shorter than the 85 minutes advertised. Although I haven't timed it, I think if you add up all the various features ("Band History," etc.) it will be closer to 85 minutes.

I almost gave this DVD 2 stars for not even having a booklet, so I will recommend it with an asterisk.

5 out of 5 stars Brief, but Great Overview of this Great Band's Early History.......2004-05-08

I bought this tape and Vol. 2 back in 1997, a few years after they had been first released. (I remember being overjoyed to discover that now I could get Black Sabbath on VHS.) It is absolutely essential for anyone who calls themselves a Black Sabbath fan. I don't mean this as demeaning to those fans who don't have it, it's just that I had thought that I knew the whole Black Sabbath story and still learned new things about the way they were during Ozzy Osbourne's tenure with them.

In this video, we get great performances from Black Sabbath doing some of their best songs, such as "N.I.B.," "War Pigs," "Paranoid," and "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath." Actually, my favorite video is the last one: a BBC Top Of The Pops performance of "Never Say Die" from their 1978 album of the same same name, their last one with Ozzy. There are many insightful interviews, especially with Tony Iommi, who gets credit only for being a great guitarist but not enough for being an intelligent, throughtful and well-spoken individual. He is quiet-mannered, yet is forthcoming when talking about the band, and reveals some very interesting information which showed how much I didn't know about them. Drummer Bill Ward and bass guitarist Tony "Geezer" Butler are also very forthcoming, the latter in particular about his drug abuse. And yes, one of the videos shown is the Bill-Ward sung "It's Alright!" THE BLACK SABBATH STORY really is essential for helping you understand the whole story about one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

MOST RECOMMENDED, FOR FANS AND CURIOUS ALIKE

5 out of 5 stars Good, But Not Enough.......2004-01-01

The video of this has been around ten yrs or more, so I wasn't expecting anything new. What's here is good ~ I get a kick outta the color version of them playing Children Of The Grave at an outdoor Cal Jam 74'...it's a strange juxtapostion between the atmosphere of the crowd, and the message of the song.

The opening track, N.I.B., is taken from a film that was made for TV in Paris, 1970, and as to why this ~ the ultimate live Sabbath footage ~ hasn't been released on DVD is beyond me.
This is when they were fresh and had a spark fueling what/how they played. Would you like to remember them as rock stars of the late 70's, or as a really freaky underground drug band of the early 70's?!..ha!..face it, that's when they cranked out their best material.

Anyway, a complete and comprehensive Sabbath DVD is yet to be:
it would need the entire Paris 70' footage, the Don Kirshner rock show footage, those hokey colored-gel background video's that are available on the Musikladen DVD, the COMPLETE footage of the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath video, and hopefully some other rare footage of them pre-1973, that I'm sure exists somewhere.

There was something genuinely heartwarming about the decision by Black Sabbath's founding members to take to the road again in 1999. The fractious intra-band relationships that have characterized Black Sabbath's long career were a major inspiration for the writers of This Is Spinal Tap, and so the Sabs' reunion created something pleasingly symmetrical and evocative of the closing scenes of that fine film.

The concert footage was taken from six of the concerts on that tour. It is conclusive proof that the original quartet of Osbourne, Iommi, Butler, and Ward (or, in Osbourne's words, "four dickheads from Aston, near Birmingham") were every bit as exuberantly juvenile a rock & roll band in their early 50s as their late teens. Also included is a sketchy biography and interviews with the band by Henry Rollins, one of the countless contemporary musicians influenced by Sabbath. It's a nice idea, but the only real weakness of the package is that Ozzy is never granted time to wheel out any of his peerless reserve of grotesque rock & roll anecdotes. Nevertheless, the already formidable case for Osbourne's knighthood is strengthened further. --Andrew Mueller, Amazon.co.uk

4 out of 5 stars More of a Documentary than true concert footage!.......2007-06-18

I will admit that I was a little surprised to find out that most of the talking with the band members throughout this DVD was done during the tunage parts. However unlike most, I really liked the way this DVD flows together. Yes the music is interrupted in mid song from time to time, but the way they've done it, truly ads something to the very tune that's being presented at that time. To hear these guys sitting back and discussing what they were/are thinking about each song is truly amazing. To hear the heartfelt laughs from all the members again after years of issues between them is great. They are obviously very happy about the chance to play together again and this show tells you that. The song selection is great and the sound is better than average, but not outstanding.

This DVD is more of a documentary style look at a truly iconic band than true concert footage. The concert footage, which is great by the way is just the topping to this reunion cake. I unlike many others here, loved to hear from each members of this great band. The tunes only add to the experience.

Well Done boys, you've brought us a new understanding of what those early daze must have been like.

Sabbath Rulz!

4 out of 5 stars Black Sabbath.......2007-05-14

This DVD is great. Nice camera angles. The only thing that I didn't like is that they interrupt some of Tony's greatest solo's with clips of the band talking. If you ask me, and who am I, they should have put those clips inbetween the songs...that way we could enjoy the whole freakin jam. Other then that...great DVD. Get it!

2 out of 5 stars What on Earth was going through their minds?!!!.......2006-12-29

1999 and here we were at last with the first offical Black Sabbath DVD. And tiwh the classic line-up. And with the band with top form. And with a great set list. BUt everything was ruined. Why?

For the first time in the history of DVDs containing live performances, ALL the songs are interrupted by an interview right in the middle! That's it! You heard me well! INtead of putting the interviews as a bonus feature, they inserted them inside the concert... Clever editors...

2 out of 5 stars Great Band- Bad DVD.......2006-11-24

Don't expect to enjoy a Black Sabbath concert. Almost every song is interrupted (in most cases at a critical point in the song) by interviews with band members. Why not put the interviews at the end or on a bonus DVD? When you're actually listening to the concert, the band is raging but the interviews (although somewhat interesting and funny) totally ruin the mood. On the positive, Ozzy sounds great, remembers the words, and is into the performances. Unfortunately he reminds me of an elderly person shuffling around looking like he's going to fall on his face at any moment. Borrow it, don't buy it.

3 out of 5 stars why would you?.......2006-11-04

Why would you cut into the middle of a song with an interview with the band(fairies wear boots for example)? I buy a music dvd to see the band perform the songs I like, not to see them b.s. about whatever(save that for the bonus dvd). But the band is great, even the songs that are interupted. I would have given this dvd a top rating, if whoever produced this had let sabbath play through all the songs without interruption. If you are a sabbath fan, you will still jam with this one.

I feel this could have been a MUCH better example of the greatest old-school metal band to ever pi$$ off my parents. The video is pretty good, but I'm disappointed in the audio, even when piped through my stereo. Just didn't capture my passion for rock n roll like the rest of my concert DVDs. No good, long, [...]kickin jams to be had here, guys. Sooo, feeling a bit denied - I'll be surfing around to see if there even IS a Sabbath [or Ozzy] DVD worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars ghothically cool.......2006-07-27

This DVD is not like the usual concert bands where you see lights all over the place, the camera running all around the stage & at the crowd. It was made in the 70's so the real focus was with the group, expecially on OZZY.I think they played only thirteen songs but it was worth it. ENJOY!!

2 out of 5 stars Poor Audio.......2006-07-11

The reason I buy concert DVDs is for the sound quality of 5.1 surround. The sound quality of this DVD is sub par. Way sub par! The only reason that I give it two stars is because it has decent video of the original lineup of Black Sabbath with Tony Iommi in the center of the stage like it used to be. Otherwise, it is a waste.

1 out of 5 stars Why people think that this DVD is good?????.......2006-06-27

This Black Sabbath's dvd SUCK'S!!!!!!!!!!!

The audio is TERRIBLE!!! you can almost hear the songs because of the annoying bass of the autohorns, (to much bass!! you can't hear well the songs).

The video quality is also a problem. Most of the video is clear but there are times that is distorted and is pretty hard to see the images because of the annoying lights of the distortion.

Buy the Black Sabbath Story vol. 1 and Last Supper instead, witch are the the best dvds until now.

DVD: Is a shame that Balck Sabbath never had a great complete DVD with their greatest hits.

Adios.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS HEAVY METAL.......2006-03-30

I recently bought this DVD not really expecting much. It obviously was put together cheaply and there are a few technical glitches that are mentioned in some of the other reviews here such as a couple of the songs fading to still shots of the band. I don't know what might have happened here, but I don't believe this is a complete concert for whatever reason. None of this matters however, because the band is on fire and totally going for it. I see so many bands today who are so disappointing live because they simply aren't good enough musicians to pull off their songs live in concert. These guys did not have that problem. The sound on this disc is rauchy as hell. People do not realize that most concert DVD's are cleaned up considerably with studio trickery you would not believe. Some of the "dirt" that is left in here is what makes this sound so tough and heavy. All that perfectly clean digital sound is fine if you like Celine Dion but this is BLACK SABBATH! I don't understand the reviews here about Bill Ward's playing or Ozzy's vocals. It all rocks! I saw Sabbath on this tour with Van Halen opening and it was an incredible show. Van Halen was great but NO ONE can blow Sabbath off the stage. It can't be done. If you are a fan of Black Sabbath do yourself a favor and go get this now and crank it up. If this doesn't rock your world I feel sorry for you.

5 out of 5 stars A Drop of Water.......2007-01-03

I remember seeing this short film as a young child and it scared me so much that now as an adult lover of horror films seeked to purchase it for my family. I am not one who scares easily and this film was frightening. I loved watching it with my husband, because it was so much fun to see him jump during the movie! I totally recommend renting/purchasing this from the Black Sabboth trilogy collection. Happy haunting!

5 out of 5 stars Followed me since childhood.......2006-12-12

These 3 short films are classic! I remember watching them as a child on Nightmare Theater and it stayed with me until I finally found it on Amazon. My favorite one is the story about a vampire killer. You will have to watch it to find out what happens. Gave me chills even as an adult to watch it. It is well worth owning if you are a horror nut like I am. It is suspenseful and exciting throughout. Thank you for having it in stock!! I searched for it for over 35 years! It was well worth the wait!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Horror Films Ever Made.......2006-11-25

Boasting three shuddery tales ranging from gorgeous Michelle Mercier's steamy telephone love triangle, to Boris Karloff in top form as an eerie Russian vampire, to a sublimely creepy drop of water, this is one of the scariest horror films ever made. The great Mario Bava outdid himself with this superbly atmospheric 1963 film, which was recut, rescored, and dubbed by AIP in such a way that the film as a whole, and "The Telephone" segment in particular, was drastically altered from the original version presented here. It's a pleasure to finally enjoy this film as Bava intended it to be seen. This DVD version has only the original Italian soundtrack with English subtitles, which is a shame since some of the actors are clearly speaking English on screen. A dubbed English soundtrack would have been a anice extra, along with Les Baxter's excellent US musical score, but even so, what's here is worth every penny. The extra scenes of Karloff in the studio are a treat, and once seen, the restless corpse from "The Drop of Water" is never forgotten. I have left this review deliberately vague on plot points so as not to spoil the movie for those who have not yet seen it, but suffice to say that Black Sabbath is a masterwork that belongs in every horror fan's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Still Scares Me After All These Years.......2006-07-18

Well, my sweet ones, I can personally guarantee that this magnificent trilogy will frighten you every time you think of it for decades. How do I know? Because that's what it's done for me.

I first saw this film in 1966 when I was 17 years old (do the math if you must). I went to the theatre with my best friend, and it scared the mortal hell out of both of us.

Later the same year, sitting around in a college dormitory swapping stories with my dorm-mates (all female--it was 1966, after all), I actually made one shriek by imitating the corpse's face from "Drop of Water."

"Drop of Water" especially frightens me to this day each time I recall it. I fully intend to buy the DVD. I just wonder if I will have the nerve to unwrap it!

4 out of 5 stars One of the scariest movies ever made.......2006-01-26

Most people know "Black Sabbath" from the American version released in 1964 by AIP. This, though, is the original Italian version ("I Tre Volti Della Paura"), with Italian dialogue, subtitled in English. Many of the actors were clearly speaking English as they are filmed, but overdubbed. At the time this was made, all Italian films were shot without production tracks and post-dubbed, though it is a little disconcerting that the Italian voice looping Karloff sounds nothing like him.

The main differences between the Italian and American versions are the order of the stories and the Karloff introductions. The Italian wrap-arounds are highly entertaining, particularly the closing one which shows Karloff riding a hobby horse, emphasizing the artificial quality of film in general (this alone is worth buying the tape for). In the Italian original, the order of the stories goes roughly from the most prosaic ("The Telephone") to the most terrifying ("A Drop of Water"). The AIP version puts "Water" first (and if "A Drop of Water" doesn't creep you out no matter what language they're speaking, you're uncreepable).

Within the episodes themselves, "Water" is virtually unchanged between the two versions, while "The Wurdlak" has a few more shots of blood and gore. More than the other episodes, "Wurdlak" also benefits from being presented in wide screen (the AIP version on tape is full screen). "Wurdlak" also changes the name of the leading lady between the Italian and American versions. In this, the original, it is "Sdenka," which in an Italian accent sounds uncomfortably like "Stink."

The middle episode in both versions is "The Telephone," and here the two version differ considerably. In the Italian version, there is nothing supernatural going on, but there is an intriguing lesbian sub-plot that was clearly out-of-bounds for the youth-oriented American release. The AIP version uses several cuts and some newly-filmed inserts to imply that something otherworldly was behind the action of the story. While the Italian version makes more sense, it is not as creepy as the American version (and Les Baxter's score for the AIP version is better than the original music).

Not only is this rendition of "Black Sabbath" fascinating from a film buff point of view, but it's a fine print of one of Mario Bava's best films. Definitely recommended for anyone wanting a chilly good time.

5 out of 5 stars Jake E. Lee is a god.......2006-11-27

This concert is the best show ozzy ever released on video. Jake is on fire in this concert. At a time when everybody was trying to be the next Eddie Van Halen, with the whammy bar, finger tapping and over the top soloing, Jake stood out. His style, sound and natural stage presence make this a very entertaining performance.

Randy Castillo looks like he's having so much fun while playing. He makes a great entrance and has a terrific drum solo. Ozzy is his usual self, except for the whole glam thing going on. Phil (the bass player) kind of blends into the background and the keyboards can be too much at times. But this concert is all about Jake. He was the most exciting guitarist to play live with Ozzy. I'm not knocking Randy (he's one of my favorites) but Jake was born to play live. Zakk, though good, lacked creativity which just made him boring.

The high points are Bark at the Moon, Killer of Giants(solo rocks)and Mr. Crowley. The low was knowing that with the exit of Jake, the mythical guitar hero position of playing with Ozzy started losing it's glory.

This was Ozzy at his best. Great performance with extremely talanted musicians.

4 out of 5 stars Ozzy is god.......2006-05-16

The only minuses of this release that 3 songs, Lightning Strikes, Ultimate Sin and Shot In the Dark are all studio versions. The rest is a live concert. This collection consists tracks from the first 4 studio albums. The first track is awesome Shot In the Dark, which got good drums and bass and heavy guitar riffs. Ozzys singing is awesome. Bark At the moon gots its best live version of all time ( better than Zakk Wyldes)The third track, Never Know Why got a weird intro but then it relaxes a bit, and flows to a moody heavy hard rock song. Mr.Crowley got TREMENDOUS live version. Ozzy sings high notes greatly and Jakes guitar stomps HARD N HEAVY. I dont know is ann average song. Killer of Giants is a long, pretty mellow, but hard on few occasions. Thank god for the bomb is a fine heavy metal song. With Ozzy all fired up. Lightning Strikes , I usually skip this. Flying High Again is the only Diary song here, its pretty awesome. Secret Loser is the best song in the setlist. It got great vocals by Ozzy, unbelivable guitar playing by jake and rolling drums by Randy Castillo. I've listened to this live version over 150 times. Then comes Iron Man, My least favourite song in the set. Then comes paranoid, good track, but too long pause. The final track is the memorable Ultimate Sin.

Overall this is Ozzys best live concert, it gots a killer set list but could have had more songs from the albums Bark and Diary. Best tracks are Bark at the moon and Secret Loser. Heavy Metal music doesnt get any better than this. Buy it! BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars Attention Guitar Students!!.......2006-03-24

I've been looking for this video, and I guess I will keep looking, but I have to concur with Marco and Scott's reviews. I've been playing guitar for over 30 years, and when this video came out in the mid-80s, guitar heroes were in their heyday. At the time, Jake was unquestionably one of the top players for combining great melodicism, virtuoso technique, and incendiary guitar pyrotechniques. (Frankly, few players are at this level twenty years later.) The sequence in this video where Jake barres the neck with the side of his left thumb is amazing, and I have never seen attempted by another player. Especially if you are a student of playing kickin' metal guitar, you must check this out. It will blow your mind.

4 out of 5 stars JAKE E LEE UNDERRATED.......2005-10-14

This is a treat for any GUITAR LOVER or PLAYER,
Watching this guitar god is a gift .
Ozzy is kind of heavy but his singing is OK.
Castillo played as usual, really good
Keyboards are to high for my personal taste,
but if you tweaked you surround a little, you have
the magnificent Jake's guitar roaring in front of you!!
Really good collection of songs,
Highlite KILLER OF GIANTS and BARK AT THE MOON!!
Buy it as supplies last....
this is CLASSIC ROCK

Fantastic documentary about one of the great bands of all time. It's a nice complement to the other documentaries in the "On The Rock Trail" series. It's worth it to have all 6! It's fun to listen to the narrator as he takes you back in time to when the band first forms to when they hit it big. No, there isn't any music from the band or interviews of any members, which is stated on the packaging...that's ok though. Hard to beat at this price!

Satan had a smaller budget upon first entering the music business, judging from the low-rent look of these 1970 Black Sabbath performances from German TV. Replete with cheesy post-psychedelic graphics and stonily blank facial expressions, the clips nonetheless put across the power of Sabbath's rudimentary metal on ace versions of "Black Sabbath," "Paranoid," and "Iron Man." One is more frightened for Ozzy Osbourne than of him, though, during the hilariously awful rendition of "Blue Suede Shoes" that closes this well-mastered DVD. --Rickey Wright

Description

In 1970, Black Sabbath made two appearances on the Beat Club/Musikladen television series. With their original line-up featuring Tony Iommi on guitar, Terry "Geezer" Butler on bass drums, and Ozzie belting out the vocals. These rare appearances highlight enormous energy projected by this popular rock band. Includes Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Iron Man and Blue Suede Shoes.

5 out of 5 stars Promo videos not live!.......2007-05-27

These are the videos you used to see on headbanger's ball shown and shown again in the 80's. There is no live material here. These are the promo videos. These are definitely studio versions not live!!
But it is simply awesome. Blue suede shoes covered by Sab.. probably won't find it or see it anywhere.

Ozzy goes crazy, I'm convinced that Ozzy invented headbanging! (like the kind we see in trash and metal bands) No one was banging their heads like this before ozzy! Crystal clear quality..
Iron man, Paranoid, Black sabbath, blue suede shoes.

4 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......2005-10-17

The only thing bad about this is that it's only 4 songs. Well, the fact that one of those 4 songs is "Blue Suede Shoes" isn't so great either. But the performances are excellent, and the quality is good. Ozzy's performance in "Black Sabbath" is incredible, maybe even better than on the album. This is Black Sabbath in their prime, performing these songs live, with amusing hippie video effects over top of it. What more could you ask for? I think this is a must-have for any Sabbath fan.

4 out of 5 stars Black Sabbath:"Black Sabbath".......2005-09-24

Although I would have preferred seeing Black Sabbath perform "Sweet Leaf" rather than Blue Suede Shoes, the other three songs make up for it.

The title song and band name is what motivated me to purchase this video, despite its short (20 mins) length. I was able to attend one of their reunion shows a few years ago, and this song got the best response from the audience. I also had the album of the same name as a teen, and never dreamed that I would see them perform some of it live over 30 years later.

3 out of 5 stars Yet another half-assed Pioneer release........2001-07-15

Yet another bad Pioneer DVD. ONLY four of the original BS Musicladen performances. Pioneer seems to not have that much confidence in the storage ability of a DVD, according to their track record. They seem to have the tendency with their anime releases to only put 3-4 episodes on it, as though they are afraid that if they go any further, the disc will won't handle it any longer. But the picture is crap any way. -_-4 And it shows here. It's as though they get a KICK out of screwing people over! "We'll only use 25% of the disc space for no logical reason." Obviously, they're ignorant of the power of this format.

This disc also contains their lame attempt at a 5.1 remix.

After Ozzy Osbourne's departure for a wildly popular solo career, his bandmates soldiered on, and this second volume of The Black Sabbath Story continues the saga from 1980 to the mid-'90s. And what a saga it was: American belter Ronnie James Dio--direct from Rainbow--replaced Osbourne, followed by a short-lived Ian Gillan, etc. Dio and original guitarist Tony Iommi gobble up the bulk of volume 2's interview footage, with the remainder of this too-brief (45 minutes) chronicle taken up by several videos and performance clips like "Die Young" and "Neon Knights" (from the first record with Dio) and the late-'80s pop-metal of "Feels Good to Me."

Since Black Sabbath never again reached the heights of their mid-'70s glory days, there's a brief sense of letdown during volume 2, especially when the videos venture dangerously close to "hair band" territory. But throughout, the group has kept its perspective, even developing a sense of humor usually buried by its notoriously dark music. --Kevin Filipski

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff on the history of sabbath, part 2 of the collection.......2006-07-26

I have had this tape for almost 10 years now, and nothing has come along that even gets close to the material on this tape. It is now available on DVD. One difference with the DVD is that Volume 2 starts with the dio years, whereas the VHS starts with "a hard road" and the end of the Ozzy years, which the DVD collection put on volume one. This set covers the Dio years and the post Dio years with Ian Gillen, Glenn hughes, and Tony Martin, ending with the return of Dio and the Dehumanizer album. This set was put out originally at the time of the release of the dehumanizer album, unfortunately Sabbath was pretty well depleted in popularity at that time. So this is a must have for the sabbath fans. I just wish they would release at some point a volume three, to include the post De-humanizer years and the reunion, I'll keep my fingers crossed.

3 out of 5 stars Black Sabbath - 'Black Sabbath Story,Volume Two' (Sanctuary Entertainment).......2006-06-05

From viewing this DVD for the first time,I can NOW remember WHY I don't usually flip over that many DVD releases.I mean, this Story Of Black Sabbath is like a bad joke. It's got some good footage, but it should have had much more of Dio and Ian Gillan.Never cared for vocalist Tony Martin at all,but the clip here for "Headless Cross" isn't half bad.As for the songs performed with Dio,which were "Die Young","Neon Knights" and "TV Crimes",they should have completely edited the interview DURING the dang song! Those first two,I believe I saw them on Don Kirshner way back when.A total of 45 minutes of the music segment, plus several 'waste of time' extras. For Sabbath die-hards and completists only.Sure glad this DVD didn't cost me much.

3 out of 5 stars Beware of false widescreen!!.......2005-07-05

The black bars on this video do not represent a widescreen ratio, but are simply black bars put in a full screen ratio because they want people to think it's widescreen. You can tell by comparing this dvd to the original fullscreen vhs tape that it's bogus. This sort of scam isn't unheard of in the industry, but it sucks that it had to happen here.
As far as the video length argument goes, I believe they are including the duration of the extra features into that. The dvd case says 85 minutes. The main feature runs 50 minutes and there are about 30 minutes of extras so there's no cause for alarm. We aren't getting scammed on time, just on the screen!!
I wanted to mention something that I found last night which I believe could be called an easter egg of sorts. When you flip through the discography menu, there is a link to the video from each album that is represented in this collection. The last album, Dehumanizer, isn't represented by a music video but there are segments of the recording process shown, a brief live clip of "I", as well as a photo session. These clips are readily accessible through the main menu. However, there is a second icon next to the "TV Crimes" song which takes you to what appears to be general miscellany: studio stuff, pool playing, outtakes from the photo session segment, and so on that isn't featured in the main program or the primary extras. Here's the interesting part: During the first part of this "hidden" footage, you can hear a repeated chant in the background that sounds like "Satan is great". It's just a couple people's voices quietly repeating throughout that first portion of the segment for no apparent purpose, then the scene changes to Tony laying down basic tracks for "TV Crimes".
Just something you might want to check out.

3 out of 5 stars I Agree that it Could Have Been Done Better..........2004-05-08

...but it's still not bad. I bought THE BLACK SABBATH STORY, VOL. 2 at the same time as VOL. 1, and I did think right away that it was kind of weird that the 50-minute VOL. 2 sported 12 songs, while the 60-minute VOL. 1 had 10. Well, it is unfotunately true that most of the videos shown on VOL. 2 are truncated, which is too bad because most of these songs are very good.

You know, every time people counted out Black Sabbath, they always came back with good material, no matter who sung for them. Hey, there were millions who thought that the Sabs were done when Ozzy left the band in 1978. But they came roaring right back with Ronnie James Dio in 1980, and put out two studio albums and their first-ever live album in the early 80's. Then Dio left in an acrimonious split, and former Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan took over for one album which, unfortunately, was poorly received. Then the whole David Donato misfire occurred (a male model with no previous professional singing experience, he was basically brought in for looks and nothing else, till he was fired by the band after three weeks due to his arrogance), after which Black Sabbath officially broke up, for the very first time in history. For the very first time, it seemed right to count out Black Sabbath for good. However, a very interesting thing happened: Tony Iommi wanted to do a solo album, which upset Warner Brothers, who didn't want to give up the Black Sabbath ghost as much as Black Sabbath itself! When Tony assembled a band that included former Ozzy bassist Bob Daisley and former Trapeze & Deep Purple bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes on lead vocals, Warner got cold feet and demanded that the finished product be released under the moniker "Black Sabbath Featuring Tony Iommi," rather than just under Iommi's own name. The result was the terrific SEVENTH STAR, which produced Black Sabbath's first Top 50 hit since "Paranoid," a great power ballad called "No Stranger To Love." Unfortunately, Glenn Hughes, who sang his heart out on the album, had fallen into cocaine addiction, and didn't last the tour. After briefly hooking up with up & coming New York-bred metallist Ray Gillen to finish out the tour, Black Sabbath got a dependable, and also virtually unknown, singer by the name of Tony "The Cat" Martin, who lasted for three albums from 1987-1991, till the Sabs reunited with Dio for the excellent album DEHUMANIZER (1992).

This is the basic rundown of the many turns & twists in the career of the ever-adapting Black Sabbath from 1978 to 1992. it is fascinating; unfortunately, this video is so short that it has no time to dwell on any particular part of it. The result feels very rushed. However, it is still worthy to add it to your Black Sabbath video collection, as long as you don't spent too much money on it (Try Amazon Marketplace, or E-Bay). It does provide some very good interviews with some of the band members, such as Tony Iommi, Bill Ward, Cozy Powell and Ian Gillan. I particularly liked Gillan's segment the best; as much of a vocal legend as this man is, he makes no bones about the fact that he didn't really fit in well as a Black Sabbath singer, even going so far as to say, "I was probably the worst Black Sabbath singer ever," with a laugh. I can't agree with that; however, I can sure appreciate the unselfish sentiment represented by the statement. He does acknowledge that there were some very strong songs on BORN AGAIN (1983); unfortunately, we only hear brief snippets of the two best songs, "Trashed" and "Zero The Hero," from this much-unfairly maligned album. We also get not enough of the videos for the great Dio songs like "Die Young" as well as "T.V. Crimes" and "I" from the 1992 reunion.

Sure, it's not the best Black Sabbath video, and it was obviously done to cash-in on the Dio reunion in that year. But for us die-hard Black Sabbath fans, it's worth it!

RECOMMENDED FOR BLACK SABBATH FANS ONLY

1 out of 5 stars What Is UP With This !!!!!.......2004-05-03

Let me start this review by saying that I am a ---BIG---!!!! Black Sabbath fan and that this review is NOT a knock on the QUALITY OF THE MUSIC or the CONTENT of the video's. What it is is a KNOCK AT THE PEOPLE WHO EDITED AND COMPILED THIS JOKE OF A DVD!!!!!!!. What is up with all the CUT and HACK footage, this is A VERY UNWATCHABLE video. The interview segments are interesting, but WHY aren't the VIDEO'S SHOWN in thier FULL LENGTH.I have seen many of these video's on MTV and other places IN THIER FULL LENGTH, so WHY NOT ON THIS DVD!!!!!!!. This is a DVD that I bought, watched once, and then traded in at the used CD store. I should feel guilty trading it in, becouse someone else will buy it and probably be severly dissapointed like I was. SAVE YOUR MONEY PEOPLE, don't flush it down the toilet like me and MANY other people have.
