2 out of 5 stars What if this guy got you pregnant.......2007-03-24

If ever there was a rallying cry for abortion this film should be it. Survivor from Freddy's last bloodbath Alice (Lisa Wilcox) is the recipient of his demon seed. Freddy thus gains control over the fetus' dreams and ergo control over Alice. But instead of taking the logical way out Alice insists on keeping the baby ("Grab your crucifix") and in the process provides the fuel the story needs to power through another useless sequel. At one point one character, Mark, even thinks and then recommends that she terminate the pregnancy which she rejects outright. Mark just rolls over, like he was the father to be or something, and says "OK we'll just find another way." What a lark! What follows is a battle for the heart and mind of the not yet born Jacob. Just think of it as a "Rosemary's Baby" for a younger, simpler generation.

The main problem this franchise faced at this point was that they felt every kill had to somehow be more awesome than the last. Early on there is a head-scratcher of a scene where Dan is turned into an actual Ghost Rider. And since they are tied to this idea that every kill has to supersede the previous one you begin to realize that this exercise in extreme silliness is only working against the films. They have become so far removed from reality that you can no longer take them seriously. I would argue that good ol' Freddy jumped the shark a few films back, but as I watched this one I just had this image of his jumping sharks, one after another, in hopes that he could possibly destroy the legacy of even the first film. That said this one is a minor step up from "Nightmare on Elm Street 4." Here they dig into Freddy's very past past and find out that he was the product of a rape that occurred at an insane asylum. Since Freddy has been messing with Alice's baby she enlists the help of his mother in hopes of reigning in the deranged serial killer. The whole thing has a very Jerry Springer-ish smell to it. Since "Nightmare on Elm Street 3" the formula has been about the same and they follow it here as well. Hero has friends who don't believe in Freddy. Said friends have token hobby (here diving and comic books). Freddy kills all of hero's friends using their hobby against them. Hero beats up Freddy. The parents haven't gotten any smarter with time, but here their role is less pivotal. In this one there is a scene where the first thing out of Alice's father's mouth after her boyfriend has died is him blaming her boyfriend for his own death. Classy. The focus has shifted away from the idiocy of the parents and more on creating a nonsensical world for Freddy to frolic in. The only rule in this game is that Freddy is all powerful. My friend, who insisted that I watch the entire series, claims this one to be his favorite. I blame it on the fact that he is a comic book geek and thus represented here. . .although I'm sure he would deny that connection. To me this is the second weakest with the original remaining the only one I can actually recommend. Freddy was running in circles and sucking wind by this point. At least Jason had the good sense to eventually move his freak show into space. **1/2

5 out of 5 stars This Freddy does not like mothers and hates fathers.......2007-02-15

This fifth episode brings together the story about Krueger's mother already slightly developed in the second episode, and the christian theme heavily introduced in the fourth episode. The film is still centered on Alice but she is growing older and older. She has finally reached high school graduation time. She has also reached the time when she can have a real boyfriend, spend the night with him and get pregnant from him. But she is a daughter raised by her father who has finally promised to stop drinking his sorrow away. This motherless situation is dictating the new turn in the saga. Alice becoming a pregnant mother before being a full mother she is attracted by this motherly side of the tale, hence she reintroduces Krueger's mother and we can see the time when this mother, still not a mother, is locked up with a hundred insane criminals, and then her being more than menaced. We can see her giving birth to an abomination. And this leads to the death of the father of Alice's child, killed of course by Krueger who makes him practically commit suicide on the road and ram into a truck. Krueger is jealous of Alice's boyfriends. Before the end of the film he will get one more in his claws. But the religious theme is strong all along. Freddy is born within the total destruction of a church, which corresponds to his rebirth in the film. Then his mother, the nun, has to be found, liberated from her walled-in prison for her to fulfill her mission : protect Alice and Alice's child from her own son and undeliver Freddy back into her womb as being his new prison to bring the film to an end. The mother seen as the cause of all this evil and at the same time the one that has to be punished for it forever in order for other people and women and children to be able to live free and unmenaced. That is pushing Eve's original sin and guilt very far indeed. That is pushing Mary's mediating role definitely too far. Even if we can believe it is a cathartic way of getting rid of our guilt and sexist vision, we must admit the treatment is quite rough and more than just plain pungent, in fact definitely violent, terrorizing and lined up inside and outside with the grossest possible visions. Even Alice and her child, conceived out of wedlock and who is going to be born to an unmarried mother and widow, are shown in the best christian light possible. She will keep the child and raise him the best she can. The last scene of the film is the vision of this baby raised by Alice, her best friend and her father, with the recollection of two young men, one his father, who have died for this child to be born. And sure enough the malediction is not far away. The rhythm of the film and the extremely rapid accumulation of horrifying, terrorizing and gross elements all of them intertwined together and interlaced one into all the others gives that film a real appeal and a deep effectiveness. We can feel terrorized at times and we definitely find the situation, Freddy Krueger and the whole world quite unbearably cruel to authorize such horror to exist in our midst. But frankly why do Alice and her friends go so easily in these bad dreams as if they were masochistically looking for being terrorized ? They should know better. At least we think so, though we follow them in their nightmares not to abandon them in the claws of the monster.

3 out of 5 stars Freddy's baby.......2006-12-28

In "A Nightmare on Elm Street 5 - The Dream Child" Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) returns from the grave, this time trying to rebirth himself through Alice's (Lisa Wilcox) unborn child. This film is a step up from "Dream Master", with a more focused and darker plot (co written by splatter punk novelists John Skipp and Craig Spector). The idea of attacking even the most helpless victim is low, even for Freddy. Also we must witness Amanda Krueger's rape at the hands of insane prisoners and later Freddy's rather spectacular birth. While the death count is kind of low (only 3) they are really memorable, if too outlandish for me. Most especially is Dan's death as he is fused painfully to his motorcycle. The model-in-training being force feed to death is grimly funny. The themes of unwanted parenthood, fighting custody, and abortion are brought up, and really should have been explored even further (though I give the producers credit for their pro-life stand and resolve to find the harder solution). The special effects are handled nicely by Stephen Hopkins ("Predetor 2" and "Ghost and the Darkness"), and the M.C. Escher style labyrinth was the rival of the same maze in Jim Henson's "Labyrinth". It is really Freddy that shoots himself in the foot with his comic schtic way out of place in the darker story line. Once again Lisa Wicox's Alice steals the show with her beauty and innocents (though I guess that's taken away as she's pregnant). The rest of the cast is rather forgettable sterotypes. Not as bad at "Elm Street 4" or "Freddy's Dead", but still a long way from the original.

4 out of 5 stars Never Sleep Again.......2006-10-03

This fifth installment of the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series picks up immediately after the ending of part 4. Alice (Lisa Wilcox) has just "killed" Freddy (Robert Englund) in the dream church, and now she and her friends are preparing for high school graduation. Everything is normal, right? Wrong!

Soon, Alice begins having dreams of Freddy again, but this time there's something different; Alice is awake and not asleep. How is Freddy getting to her without her being asleep? The answer is soon revealed, as she finds out that she is pregnant with her boyfriend Dan's (Danny Hassel) child. Freddy is somehow using the unborn baby's dreams to terrorize Alice and her friends. Once Freddy figures out how to do this, the rampage starts all over again. Soon, Freddy has killed Alice's friends Greta Gibson (Erika anderson), Mark Gray (Joe Seely) and Dan. Now, only Lisa and Yvonne (Kelly Jo Minter) are left.

Alice has also learned more concerning Freddy's mother Amanda Krueger, and this information plays a large part in the movie. Will Alice survive to bring her baby into the world, or will Freddy succeed in using the child for himself?

Many people thought this was one of the poorer films of the "Nightmare" series, but I rather enjoyed it. I thought Robert Englund was still good as Freddy. Granted, he may not have been quite as menacing as before, but his one-liners are pretty funny. Keep an eye out for Robert Englund at the very beginning of the movie sans Freddy make-up. Lisa Wilcox does a good job as the strong and determined mother trying to save her child.

I recommend this movie to all fans of the "Nightmare" series. It does a good job of keeping the original plot moving along, and the viewer learns more about Freddy and Amanda Krueger's relationship. Watch and see Freddy at his slashing best, if you dare to stay awake..
