Based on a story by Clive Barker and skillfully written and directed by Bernard Rose, Candyman rises above most horror films by eerily suggesting that some urban legends--in this case a particularly frightening one--have a spooky basis in reality. The legend of the Candyman is a potent one around the high-rise tenements of Chicago's Cabrini-Green housing complex, where the residents speak of a dark, ominous figure who appears when his victims say his name five times in front of a mirror, then mercilessly slashes them to death. Upon learning that the Candyman is rumored to live in one of the vacant tenements, a University of Illinois researcher (Virginia Madsen) investigates a recent murder at Cabrini-Green. She learns that the Candyman (played by Tony Todd) is both unreal and chillingly real--a supernatural force of evil empowered by those who believe in his legend. He is a killer made flesh by the belief of others, and the young researcher's investigation is a threat to his existence. What happens next? We wouldn't dare spoil the chills, but rest assured that writer-director Rose has tapped into a wellspring of urban angst and fear, and Candyman serves up its gruesome frights with a refreshing dose of intelligence. --Jeff Shannon

Original Horror With Style...and Flaws.......2007-04-28
From the mind of Clive Barker comes a tale of ghost stories that just might be real.
The beautiful chain-smoking grad student Helen is studying an urban legend about a serial killer whose identity is threatened by her, and he begins appearing again to exact his bloody revenge. That is the concept of Candyman. There's more, but this is a review, not a Cliff's Notes book.
Certain aspects of this film showed such promise. Candyman has an intimate and powerful desire for Helen that leads you to think that this evil being has chosen her (just a normal, pretty white girl?) for something deeper than she knows. ("It was Always You, Helen"...) This piqued my curiosity but it never paid off somehow.
All in all, it's a fair horror venue with lots of blood (and bees), and an unusual music score from Philip Glass.
If you've seen all the others, here's one that you might enjoy for its story and style.
I always giggle towards the end when the girl asks for help in making the salad, and she is holding a huge knife. It looks as if she is preparing to make her way through the Congo. About as subtle as a garlic sandwich.
The ending, such as it is, left me disappointed. It was tacked-on, typical, and predictable. That's Hollywood.
Xenophobia anyone?.......2007-03-27
Clive Barker's works frequently address issues of xenophobia. "Nightbreed" is an excellent example of the persecution of the "Other." Told from the "Other's" perspective, it allows its viewer a small window into the struggles of "minorities" (not that any film can fully convey this idea, but this is an excellent attempt at beginning a dialogue).
On the surface, "Candyman" appears to pick-up this thread. The viewer learns that Candyman was a master portrait-artist in the late eighteenth/early nineteenth century. He was commissioned to capture the likeness of a landowner's young, innocent daughter. Instead, he captured her virginity. For this "crime" he was summarily covered in bees and hanged. Fast-forward to today(ish). The viewer learns that Candyman's name has become an urban-legend in Calibrini-Green (the housing-projects which were constructed on the same grounds on which he was executed). A copycat killer stalks his victims ... but is Candyman more than just a moment in history? More than just a name? Interesting premise, right?
So here is where we encounter problems. The depiction of Calibrini-Green (a very real, notoriously violent housing project in Chicago) is "white-washed." The film does not depict the overcrowding of this area: and has encountered opposition as a result (minor stuff though, right?). Now, here is the most serious offense the film commits: this film is supposed to reveal the story of Candyman ... but inevitably, it becomes the story of Helen. She usurps the narrative ... and, thus, his power. When Helen dons the hook and ultimately replaces Candyman in the mythology (as noted in the film's conclusion), her history is being compared with his. And can we really compare the history of a white woman who lives in a condo to that of a black man who was executed without a trial? Doubtful.
The film is a bit dated. It plays upon the fears white Americans had of the exodus of middle-class blacks from the "projects" (Calbrini-Green in this case) into suburban areas. It also plays the fears white Americans had upon the destruction of housing projects and, thus, the displacement of blacks during the Regan/Bush era. (The question being, "Are we safe from 'these people'?") While this could be an enlightening film, the approach is painfully flawed. The treatment of the black community is borderline insulting.
Still, the film is certainly worth a watch if you are interested in the portrayal of the "other" in film, Clive Barker's work, or if you are simply interested in the evolution of horror film.

TWO THUMBS UP !!!.......2007-03-21
AS I HAVE WRITTEN IN OTHER HORROR MOVIE REVIEWS, CANDYMAN IS A WONDERFUL CLASSIC THAT GAVE ME MY FIRST NIGHTMARE IN YEARS. IT WASNT JUST THAT I WAS FRIGHTENED, THE WHOLE CONCEPT OF THE FOLKLORE/LEGEND GOT TO ME. I WAS YOUNG, IMPRESSIONABLE, AND OF COURSE SO VERY BRAVE. AT A SLEEP OVER, SOME FRIENDS AND I HAD RENTED THE MOVIE.RIGHT AFTER WATCHING THE MOVIE, WE FELT THE NEED TO PUSH THE ENVELOPE OF OUR OWN BOREDOM AND SPK THE UNSPKABLE NAME FIVE TIMES IN THE MIRROR. OF COURSE GIGGLING TEENS THAT WE WERE IT TOOK A FEW TIMES TO BUILD UP THE INITIAL COURAGE, BUT ALAS WE DID IT...AND NOTHING. BUT STILL THAT NIGHT IT LEFT ITS LASTING IMPRESSION ON ME AND MY YOUNG MIND, PRODUCING A MOST GRUESOME NIGHTMARE. MAYBE IT WAS OWN SUBCONCIOUS OR MAYBE THE LEGENDS TRUE WHO KNOWS, I JUST KNOW THAT FROM THAT DAY FORWARD I NEVER SPK HIS NAME ( CANDYMAN ) NOR HERS (BLOODY MARY ) IN A JKING FASHION AGAIN. I JUST KNOW THAT CANDYMAN FREAKED ME OUT....AND THAT IS WHY IT DESERVES THE SHEER RESPECT OF HORROR CRITICS ALIKE***
Sweets for the sweet.......2007-03-16
Its one of Clive Barkers best. Pure classic, this film is perfect from the music to the acting of Tony Todd, and Virginia Madieson, and the look of the film is beautiful. If you haven't seen this film your missing out.
Overall a Pretty Good Film.......2007-03-09
This movie stands out for its on-location depiction of inner-city Chicago. It is an urban Chicago movie which gives you a real flavor of Chicago. To make matters more intersting it deals with the notorious Cabrini-Green housing projects too, with great authenticity. It deals with inner-city Blacks in a frank and believable manner. The story line is pretty strong and the performances are good. A good B movie over all, a low budget gritty true-to-life movie that will only get better with time. Oh, and it is creepy and scary too.

A stylish though inferior sequel to its classic predecessor, Bill Condon's Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh deepens our knowledge of what made the murdered Daniel Robitaille turn into the monster that haunts dreams and mirrors. But some of it is still pretty routine: schoolteacher Annie takes a long time to connect her family's plantation-owning past and her own artistic talent with the legend, and is far too ready to say the Candyman's name five times in a mirror to debunk her pupils' fears.
The setting: New Orleans at Carnival time with a disc jockey whimsically reminding us that Carnival is the last farewell to pleasure before the rigors of Lent. Tony Todd, who returns as the Candyman, gives a quiet dignity and sadness to the monstrous specter with a hook for a hand. His life was torn from him and he is mad for vengeance, yet he has an artistic temperament and loved Annie's kinswoman Caroline. Condon captures an attractive elegiac tone in much of this, as well as moments of brutal horror. --Roz Kaveney
Description
His myth has endured for generations. His legacy is eternal rage. And now he's back...with a vengeance! A Sad Story.......2006-02-03
I agreed with this, at least what I saw. Mainly, making the Candyman character a horror icon along the lines of Freddy or Jason. The scenes of seeing the title character hazed, lynched and left for dead borders on the unwatchable. But unlike Freddy or Jason, this is genuinely terrifying because it is more super realitic. The title name the Candy man implies that the black man who has the lead character was intellectually childlike- a mob hazed and lynched him, stunk honey on him hench the word candy and then the bees were attracted to the honey, murdering him. The super mega low budget was commenting on the childlike old fashioned hicks who did this. Where I live in Duluth and Superior it is a glorified ghetto- they are stuck in like the 1870s. They are on a level with the animals, especially a squirrel. They taught them not to accept anything that was different. They have paid for it, but still refuse to learn moral lessons from atrocities of the past. Their tired, old fashioned values is depressing to watch and again super mega low budget, some real big time immaturity here. That they would even make this appaled me.
Candyman: The Farewell to the Flesh (1995).......2005-12-31
Director: Bill Condon
Cast: Tony Todd, Kelly Rowan, William O'Leary, Bill Nunn, Matt Clark, David Gianopoulos, Fay Hauser, Joshua Gibran Mayweather, Timothy Carhart, Veronica Cartwright.
Running Time: 93 minutes
Rated R for violence and gore, and for some sexuality and language.
Many die-hard horror fans absolutely worship the original "Candyman" because it's so genuinely scary and intelligently adapted from a Clive Barker story. This sequel (it looks more like a prequel, actually, with all those flashbacks) is not entirely unwatchable, it just immensely pales in comparison to the original, like so many other redundant sequels do. It seems though director Bill Condon and his army of crew members totally missed the point of Barker's tale and of the original film. What began as a tale of enigmatic mystery and mystique, brooding with paranoia is now been cut down to another run-of-the-mill hacker series that takes away from the brilliance of the 1992 original.
It's Mardi Gras season in New Orleans, where inner-city school teacher Annie Tarrant (Kelly Rowan) proves to her class that there is no Candyman by looking into a mirror and saying his name five times. She should have listened to them because of course there is a Candyman and her brother Ethan (William O'Leary) knows it, as he's been arrested for the murder of the smug fat bloke from the first film, but of course he's innocent and the real culprit is the hook-handed killer, back to wreak more havoc in the lives of Annie's family. Believing that Ethan and her mother (Veronica Cartwright) aren't telling her the whole truth about his arrest and her father's death, Annie delves into the legend herself.
"Farewell to the Flesh" departs from the original with Annie's deep, dark family secret, which is not only completely predictable but also totally uninteresting. The supposed twists only start coming after way too much draggy set-up where the movie tries to create mystery about the existence of the Candyman even though we all know he's real and we all know what's going to happen from this point on. The menace of the character has gone, his appearances are too numerous and aren't scary, and the moments when he pops up to stick his hook through someone's back are completely expected. Basically this does nothing that the original didn't do better, with the poor black area of town, the missing kid, the cops believing Ethan carried out the Candyman's crimes and the Candyman's spell over Annie all being derivative of the first movie. The Mardi Gras setting adds some colour but has nothing to do with the story and gives us the irrelevant, at times nonsensical radio show that weaves through the movie. The change of location also weakens the Candyman mythos, because an urban legend in one part of a town I can believe, but now apparently everyone in the civilised world has heard of, and lives in fear of, the Candyman. The film tries too hard to turn him into a horror icon along the lines of Freddy or Michael Myers, and it succeeds only too well, because this time around the impact has gone, too much detail is revealed about his origin and the story is a pale imitation of what's already been done before.
Decent Sequal.......2005-10-12
This movie like most sufferes from sequalitis, however not as bad as you might think. What I did like about this movie was that it drew in some of the blanks that the first movie left.
Who exactly is Candyman? How did he come to be? What happened to the white woman he loved?
Basically the movie goes like this (from memory haven't watched it in awhile)
A young white teacher, from a wealthy family, living in New Orleans, who teaches the poorer black students, tries to convince her students that Candyman doesn't exist, only to become haunted by him. She soon discovers a deep secret in her families past that is directly connected to the man and the event that started the legend.
What I liked about this movie was that it went deeper into the legend of the Candyman. It turned him from a typical villian into a tragic one. Although the ending was predictiable it was decent movie that worked well with the first.
0 STARS: Farewell to this raw SEWAGE!!.......2005-08-21
The original "Candyman" sucks so bad, but everybody praises it and I kept wondering to myself, "am I missing something?" So, I tried watching it again and it still sucked as I could not even get through it, so I figured maybe I should watch the sequels and maybe I would find something that I liked about this series. Well, after watching "Candyman 2", one becomes cognizant that this series is just full of rubbish...again, the social overtones and politically correct notions present in this series make the movie absurd in the extreme. The villain in "Candyman" makes me want to laugh because he is so NOT scary...if you want a good laugh, watch the "Candyman" series, but if you want to be scared, you would even do better to watch "Ren and Stimpy". In all seriousness, watch "Halloween" and "Halloween II" if you want to see a good slasher and horror movie that really produces the goods and doesn't try to send a social message. LOL. Some people call "Candyman 2- Farewell to the Flesh" a horror movie...I just call it rubbish.
baaaaad sequel!.......2005-08-06
I was expecting this movie to be way better especially from how good the first one is, when i watched it i was incredibly disappointed, this film is nothing like the first one and is boring and crap, i would rather sit through hellraiser than this pile of junk again.

What a rediculous pile of poo........2006-06-02
You're kidding, right? The only good film in the trilogy is the origonal. How dare you try to continue the story of something that cannot be continued. The orgional was good enough. Leave it there. Just because you want money, don't ruin such wonderfull entertainment.
I didn't even stay awake through all of the movie, it was so bad! I'd rather watch Barney with my 2-year-old!
Further Explored.......2006-02-03
This third sequel in the terrifyng Candyam series is a further decline, as you can feel more sympathy for the character as it does explain all along- a mob lynched and hazed him, pasting honey on his body and bringing a swarm of bees to eat him alive. It was about inter racial marriage, which again was almost unbearable to watch, and what was even more scary was that this happens in real life. A true old fashioned ghetto which again is the closest thing to a hell on earth.
Candyman 3: The Day of the Dead (1999).......2005-12-31
Director: Turi Meyer
Cast: Tony Todd, Donna D'Errico, Alexia Robinson, Jsu Garcia, Mark Adair-Rios, Lupe Ontiveros, Elizabeth Guber, Rena Riffel, Ernie Hudson Jr.
Running Time: 93 minutes
Rated R for bloody violence and gore, sexuality and language.
The third in the series derived from a concept by Clive Barker, "Day of the Dead" (they can't even come up with their own subtitle) staggers down the well-trodden path already navigated by the "Halloween" and "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies: that is, taking a decent concept and flushing it down the toilet. The original movie was a near horror masterpiece and relied on atmosphere rather than gore, while the first sequel was bearable if completely routine. This one is just a load of rubbish. Donna D'Errico, from Baywatch (what a spectacle of credibility), stars as Caroline McKeever, the great great granddaughter of the feared Candyman (Tony Todd once again), once a normal man but now an apparition who appears to slaughter everyone around you if you dare to say his name five times in front of a mirror. Caroline says his name five times in front of a mirror and up he pops to murder her nearest and dearest. As the Candyman hacks his way through various bad actors, Caroline teams up with new pal David (Nick Corri) to find a collection of paintings knocked up by the Candyman while he was still alive, which may hold the key to stopping him.
There's not a single thing here that isn't scavenged from the first "Candyman" film and every other ropy horror movie produced since caveman days. The screenplay is so lazy it can't even be bothered to connect half the characters to the plot, the photography is bright and glossy, which is at odds with what's supposed to be a dark story, while nothing in the direction adds any atmosphere at all. Anyone could have directed this movie, so little effort has been put in to make it scary, while the ending is an outrageous cop out. No thought has gone in to developing themes or structuring the plot because no one here is talented enough to give this movie any depth beyond having D'Errico running around in a variety of tight vests. The rest of the performances are poor too, although none are quite as bad as D'Errico's pathetic attempts at screaming and breathing erratically. Surely more can be done with characters like the Candyman than the constant repetition of scenes where he appears to stick his hook through someone's stomach. The fact that the makers of this movie think Candyman is so terrifying that the very sight of him just standing there will strike fear into our hearts is a sign that they just can't be bothered even to try something a bit different. Clive Barker may not be the master of horror as every at first claimed him to be, but he's right about one thing: the sequels to his movies are garbage.
Horrendous.......2005-09-26
Clive Barker did a good job on the original Candyman. It was truly a cut above most horror movies. The second movie was medicore at best in my opinion but this one was just horrendous. There is no suspense at all in this movie and the acting is deplorable. Donna D'Errico is soft on the eyes but too bad she talks. Lets hope this is the last sequel.
0 STARS: THAT WAS SO LAME! LMFAO THAT WAS SO LAME!!.......2005-08-21
I will not give "Candyman 3: Day of the Dead" a serious analysis because it is so stupid and to be frank, is not even worthy of a review other than to say that this TRASH sucks just like the rest of the series, but also, this movie goes above beyond being horrible and is the epitome of the word "lame". THIS MOVIE "F"ing SUCKS!!! Please pardon me for my language, but after watching this movie, I am sure you can understand my distress after wasting my time on this complete and utter rubbish.
