At last--a great American movie available on video for the first time in its original aspect ratio. For all the slasher pictures that have ripped off Psycho (and particularly its classic set piece, the "shower scene"), nothing has ever matched the impact of the real thing. More than just a first-rate shocker full of thrills and suspense, Psycho is also an engrossing character study in which director Alfred Hitchcock skillfully seduces you into identifying with the main characters--then pulls the rug (or the bathmat) out from under you. Anthony Perkins is unforgettable as Norman Bates, the mama's boy proprietor of the Bates Motel; and so is Janet Leigh as Marion Crane, who makes an impulsive decision and becomes a fugitive from the law, hiding out at Norman's roadside inn for one fateful night. Psycho gets the masterpiece treatment it deserves on DVD, with extras including newsreel footage surrounding the making and release of the movie; an archive of production stills; the special trailer in which Hitchcock (acting as one of the original Universal Studio tour guides) himself leads viewers around the Bates place; credit designer Saul Bass's original "shower scene" story boards; posters and advertising materials for the movie's William Castle-like publicity campaign (No One Will Be Seated After the Feature Begins!); and a 90-minute documentary on the making of the film! What more could any movie fan possibly want? --Jim Emerson

The Bret Easton Ellis novel American Psycho, a dark, violent satire of the "me" culture of Ronald Reagan's 1980s, is certainly one of the most controversial books of the '90s, and that notoriety fueled its bestseller status. This smart, savvy adaptation by Mary Harron (I Shot Andy Warhol) may be able to ride the crest of the notoriety; prior to the film's release, Harron fought a ratings battle (ironically, for depictions of sex rather than violence), but at the time the director stated, "We're rescuing [the book] from its own bad reputation." Harron and co-screenwriter Guinevere Turner (Go Fish) overcome many of the objections of Ellis's novel by keeping the most extreme violence offscreen (sometimes just barely), suggesting the reign of terror of yuppie killer Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) with splashes of blood and personal souvenirs. Bale is razor sharp as the blank corporate drone, a preening tiger in designer suits whose speaking voice is part salesman, part self-help guru, and completely artificial. Carrying himself with the poised confidence of a male model, he spends his days in a numbing world of status-symbol one-upmanship and soul-sapping small talk, but breaks out at night with smirking explosions of homicide, accomplished with the fastidious care of a hopeless obsessive. The film's approach to this mayhem is simultaneously shocking and discreet; even Bateman's outrageous naked charge with a chainsaw is most notable for the impossibly polished and gleaming instrument of death. Harron's film is a hilarious, cheerfully insidious hall of mirrors all pointed inward, slowly cracking as the portrait becomes increasingly grotesque and insane. --Sean Axmaker

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-06-18

This is my favorite movie of all time. Christian Bale drew me in when I first saw this movie. Every movie he is in, he always seems to be on top of his game. Sure some of his movie havent been all too great, yet he still puts on a hell of a show. I love the book as well, which is more explict then this. Its a great move.

    5 out of 5 stars great movie.......2007-06-15

I've got more and more respect for Christian Bale the more I see his movies. This one is excellent.

2 out of 5 stars do you like phil collins?.......2007-06-13

I love this movie, I have since I rented about 5 years ago. I dont' really understand it, I guess I should read the book, but I think It's a really well done movie. Of course Bale is great, i love him as bateman and I also loved the period of the film. The special features on this edition are a different story. The version I already had only included one short featurette that was interesting, but short, and left me wanting more. So, naturally I thought I struck gold with the "uncut killers edition". Too bad most of the special features have NOTHING to do with the movie. A group of about 20 totally random people comment, one at a time, on new york in the eigthies for about an hour. I know that sounds weird, and it is, but its true. TOTALLY RANDOM people that had nothing to do with the movie (most of them). Honestly, I havent watched the movie yet, the special features were all I could handle at the time. There are 5 deleted scenes that add up to about 2 minutes, so this was barely worth it, only because I love this movie so much.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best!.......2007-06-10

This is Christian Bale at his best, his performance oozes class. Classic performance in a classic movie. I cannot recommend this movie highly enough. Buy it. Now I must return some videos...

    5 out of 5 stars American Psycho.......2007-06-08

This is one of my Top 5 all-time favorite movies. Also in my Top 5 are Fight Club and Very Bad Things...if that gives you any idea of what you're in store for.

Best when viewed after dinner, while sipping wine, about 11pm-ish, with a significant other.

Masterpiece indeed. With 14 films, each supplemented with numerous documentaries, commentaries, and other bonus materials, Alfred Hitchcock - The Masterpiece Collection will be the cornerstone for any serious DVD library. Packaged in a beautiful, conversation-starting velvet box, the individual discs inside come four to a case, decorated with original poster art.
No doubt opinionated fans will argue about what should fall under the rubric of "masterpiece" in Hitchcock's body of work, but with the bona fide classics Vertigo, Psycho, and The Man Who Knew Too Much, there's plenty of timeless movie magic here. Eye-popping transfers and gorgeous sound make this set one of the must-have releases of the year.

Should the Hitchcock fan have the energy for more after imbibing on the movies themselves, a bonus disc provides additional documentaries. These include a revealing interview in which the master of suspense discusses, among other things, how much he dislikes working with method actors, going so far as to name names (we're talking about you, Jimmy Stewart and Montgomery Clift). In an American Film Institute lifetime achievement ceremony, the master of suspense is praised by the likes of Stewart and Ingrid Bergman, and seems to be suffering from severe boredom as celebrities pile on the flattery. Then Hitchcock opens his mouth to accept the award, delivering an endlessly witty stream of perfect bon mots that prove once again that he was a master of high comedy as well. Revealing documentaries about the making of Psycho and The Birds round out the feast of extras. The 36-page booklet, filled mostly with stills and poster art, provides little new information about the films.--Ryan Boudinot

Films Included in Alfred Hitchcock - The Masterpiece Collection

    Saboteur
Robert Cummings stars as Barry Kane, a patriotic munitions worker who is falsely accused of sabotage, in this wartime thriller from Alfred Hitchcock. Plastered across the front page of every newspaper and hated by the nation, Kane's only hope of clearing his name is to find the real villain. The script as a whole is a clever one--Algonquin wit Dorothy Parker shares a screenwriting credit, and her trademark zingers make for a terrific mix of humor and suspense. Saboteur is a pleasure whether you're a die-hard Hitchcock fan or just someone who likes a good nail-biter. --Ali Davis

    Shadow of a Doubt
Alfred Hitchcock considered this 1943 thriller to be his personal favorite among his own films, and although it's not as popular as some of Hitchcock's later work, it's certainly worthy of the master's admiration. Scripted by playwright Thornton Wilder and inspired by the actual case of a 1920's serial killer known as "The Merry Widow Murderer," the movie sets a tone of menace and fear by introducing a psychotic killer into the small-town comforts of Santa Rosa, California. Through narrow escapes and a climactic scene aboard a speeding train, this witty thriller strips away the façade of small-town tranquility to reveal evil where it's least expected. And, of course, it's all done in pure Hitchcockian style. --Jeff Shannon

    Rope
An experimental film masquerading as a standard Hollywood thriller, Rope is simple and based on a successful stage play: two young men (John Dall and Farley Granger) commit murder, more or less as an intellectual exercise. They hide the body in their large apartment, then throw a dinner party. Will the body be discovered? Director Alfred Hitchcock, fascinated by the possibilities of the long-take style, decided to shoot this story as though it were happening in one long, uninterrupted shot. Since the camera can only hold one 10-minute reel at a time, Hitchcock had to be creative when it came time to change reels, disguising the switches as the camera passed behind someone's back or moved behind a lamp. James Stewart, as a suspicious professor, marks his first starring role for Hitchcock, a collaboration that would lead to the masterpieces Rear Window and Vertigo. --Robert Horton

    Rear Window
Like the Greenwich Village courtyard view from its titular portal, Alfred Hitchcock's classic Rear Window is both confined and multileveled: both its story and visual perspective are dictated by its protagonist's imprisonment in his apartment, convalescing in a wheelchair, from which both he and the audience observe the lives of his neighbors. Cheerful voyeurism, as well as the behavior glimpsed among the various tenants, affords a droll comic atmosphere that gradually darkens when he sees clues to what may be a murder. At deeper levels, Rear Window plumbs issues of moral responsibility and emotional honesty, while offering further proof (were any needed) of the director's brilliance as a visual storyteller. --Sam Sutherland

    The Trouble with Harry
A busman's holiday for Alfred Hitchcock, this 1955 black comedy concerns a pesky corpse that becomes a problem for a quiet, Vermont neighborhood. Shirley MacLaine makes her film debut as one of several characters who keep burying the body and finding it unburied again. Hitchcock clearly enjoys conjuring the autumnal look and feel of the story, and he establishes an important, first-time alliance with composer Bernard Herrmann, whose music proved vital to the director's next half-dozen or so films. But for now, The Trouble with Harry is a lark, the mischievous side of Hitchcock given free reign. --Tom Keogh

The Man Who Knew Too Much
Alfred Hitchcock's 1956 remake of his own 1934 spy thriller is an exciting event in its own right, with several justifiably famous sequences. James Stewart and Doris Day play American tourists who discover more than they wanted to know about an assassination plot. When their son is kidnapped to keep them quiet, they are caught between concern for him and the terrible secret they hold. When asked about the difference between this version of the story and the one he made 22 years earlier, Hitchcock always said the first was the work of a talented amateur while the second was the act of a seasoned professional. Indeed, several extraordinary moments in this update represent consummate filmmaking, particularly a relentlessly exciting Albert Hall scene, with a blaring symphony, an assassin's gun, and Doris Day's scream. The Man Who Knew Too Muchis the work of a master in his prime. --Tom Keogh

    Vertigo
Although it wasn't a box-office success when originally released in 1958, Vertigo has since taken its deserved place as Alfred Hitchcock's greatest, most spellbinding, most deeply personal achievement. James Stewart plays a retired police detective who is hired by an old friend to follow his wife (a superb Kim Novak, in what becomes a double role), whom he suspects of being possessed by the spirit of a dead madwoman. Shot around San Francisco (the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of the Legion of Honor are significant locations) and elsewhere in Northern California (the redwoods, Mission San Juan Batista) in rapturous Technicolor, Vertigo is as lovely as it is haunting. --Jim Emerson

    Psycho
--Jim Emerson

    The Birds
Vacationing in northern California, Alfred Hitchcock was struck by a story in a Santa Cruz newspaper: "Seabird Invasion Hits Coastal Homes." From this peculiar incident, and his memory of a short story by Daphne du Maurier, the master of suspense created one of his strangest and most terrifying films. The Birds follows a chic blonde, Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren), as she travels to the coastal town of Bodega Bay to hook up with a rugged fellow (Rod Taylor) she's only just met. Before long the town is attacked by marauding birds, and Hitchcock's skill at staging action is brought to the fore. Beyond the superb effects, however, The Birds is also one of Hitchcock's most psychologically complicated scenarios, a tense study of violence, loneliness, and complacency. What really gets under your skin are not the bird skirmishes but the anxiety and the eerie quiet between attacks. Treated with scant attention by serious critics in 1963, The Birds has grown into a classic and--despite the sci-fi trappings--one of Hitchcock's most serious films. --Robert Horton

    Marnie
Sean Connery, fresh from the second Bond picture, From Russia with Love, is a Philadelphia playboy who begins to fall for Tippi Hedren's blonde ice goddess only when he realizes that she's a professional thief; she's come to work in his upper-crust insurance office in order to embezzle mass quantities. His patient program of investigation and surveillance has a creepy, voyeuristic quality that's pure Hitchcock, but all's lost when it emerges that the root of Marnie's problem is phobic sexual frigidity, induced by a childhood trauma. Luckily, Sean is up to the challenge. As it were. Not even D.H. Lawrence believed as fervently as Hitchcock in the curative properties of sexual release. --David Chute

    Torn Curtain
Paul Newman and Julie Andrews star in what must unfortunately be called one of Alfred Hitchcock's lesser efforts. Still, sub-par Hitchcock is better than a lot of what's out there, and this one is well worth a look. Newman plays cold war physicist Michael Armstrong, while Andrews plays his lovely assistant-and-fiancée, Sarah Sherman. Armstrong has been working on a missile defense system that will "make nuclear defense obsolete," and naturally both sides are very interested. All Sarah cares about is the fact that Michael has been acting awfully fishy lately. The suspense of Torn Curtain is by nature not as thrilling as that in the average Hitchcock film--much of it involves sitting still and wondering if the bad guys are getting closer. Still, Hitchcock manages to amuse himself: there is some beautifully clever camera work and an excruciating sequence that illustrates the frequent Hitchcock point that death is not a tidy business. --Ali Davis

    Topaz
Alfred Hitchcock hadn't made a spy thriller since the 1930s, so his 1969 adaptation of Leon Uris's bestseller seemed like a curious choice for the director. But Hitchcock makes Uris's story of the West's investigation into the Soviet Union's dealings with Cuba his own. Frederick Stafford plays a French intelligence agent who works with his American counterpart (John Forsythe) to break up a Soviet spy ring. The film is a bit flat dramatically and visually, and there are sequences that seem to occupy Hitchcock's attention more than others. A minor work all around, with at least two alternative endings shot by Hitchcock. --Tom Keogh

    Frenzy
Alfred Hitchcock's penultimate film, written by Anthony Shaffer (who also wrote Sleuth), this delightfully grisly little tale features an all-British cast minus star wattage, which may have accounted for its relatively slim showing in the States. Jon Finch plays a down-on-his-luck Londoner who is offered some help by an old pal (Barry Foster). In fact, Foster is a serial killer the police have been chasing--and he's framing Finch. Which leads to a classic Hitchcock situation: a guiltless man is forced to prove his innocence while eluding Scotland Yard at the same time. Spiked with Hitchcock's trademark dark humor, Frenzy also features a very funny subplot about the Scotland Yard investigator (Alec McCowen) in charge of the case, who must endure meals by a wife (Vivien Merchant) who is taking a gourmet-cooking class. --Marshall Fine

    Family Plot
Alfred Hitchcock's final film is understated comic fun that mixes suspense with deft humor, thanks to a solid cast. The plot centers on the kidnapping of an heir and a diamond theft by a pair of bad guys led by Karen Black and William Devane. The cops seem befuddled, but that doesn't stop a questionable psychic (Barbara Harris) and her not overly bright boyfriend (Bruce Dern, in a rare good-guy role) from picking up the trail and actually solving the crime. Did she do it with actual psychic powers? That's part of the fun of Harris's enjoyably ditsy performance. --Marshall Fine

    4 out of 5 stars Poor packaging........2007-06-01

This is a great set minus the annoying packaging. As someone mentioned earlier the DVD cases are fitted to go in a certain order and if they don't go in in that order then they get stuck and the edges of the DVD cases get frayed. The corners of the cases get frayed anyway because the cases are a paper and cardboard-based binding with the plastic DVD holders glued on to them. So I put them in spine first now. Open and close them enough times and you get those white, worn edges on the spine. Another problem with the cases is that the plastic glued on part that hold the DVDs in place are notorious for getting de-glued. Yet another thing. . .one disc is now not holding in the case properly. How could I remedy this problem? Buy an entire new set??? The door on the velvet box doesn't snap shut in anyway so if you hold the wrong side down. . .the DVDs will fall out. So watch out. The velvet box looks and feels nice but it collects dust very easily and is not easily cleanable. I tried to brush off some of the dust and the silvery logos and such began to flake off.

    5 out of 5 stars A REALLY NICE COLLECTION - A GREAT GIFT.......2007-05-23

Not only does this collection have some of Hitchcock's best movies, it also comes in a REALLY nice felt box and nice DVD cases. Makes an excellent gift.

5 out of 5 stars Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection.......2007-05-08

This is an excellent collection. It doesn't have all of Hitchcock's greats, it's missing Strangers on a Train, Notorious and Rebecca, but its hands down the best collection assembled of his movies from the 40's and on. There are some great extras as well. I highly recommend this collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Psycho.......2007-06-28

Made at the peak of his career in 1960, "Psycho" was suspense master Hitchcock's last and most famous black-and-white picture--and a film that inaugurated the sub-genre of slasher movie. By the standards of today's gore-fests, it's a fairly restrained murder mystery, but disturbing nonetheless, achieving its chills more by what is withheld than shown. Hitchcock knows just how to heighten our dread of who or what might be at the top of the stairs, or beyond that shower curtain. The terrifying "Psycho" stands above most any psychological thriller made since.

3 out of 5 stars Still Waiting For Anamorphic Widescreen!.......2007-06-13

Attention widescreen t.v. owners: this dvd is not in anamorphic widescreen(enhanced for 16 x 9). A couple of years ago "Psycho" was re-released on dvd in the Alfred Hitchcock collection. It is in anamorphic widescreen. Since then Universal has been SLOWLY releasing titles from the collection in anamorphic for the first time. Well when do we get "Psycho"???!!! I'd love to add this film to my collection, but will not do it until it is properly presented for widescreen t.v.

This movie is not R rated it should be PG like Vertigo. The shower scene is one of the most famous scenes in history and my favorite charactor is "mother" because you dont see her till the end.
My favorite part is when the detective gets stabbed and falls down the stairs.
I love the music that plays in the shower scene because the strings are so high pitched it sounds like screaming.
When I get older I want to make a Psycho of my own.

    Description

Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) is a Wall Street yuppie, obsessed with success, status and style, with a stunning fiancee (Reese Witherspoon). He is also a psychotic killer who rapes, murders and dismembers both strangers and acquaintances without provocation or purpose. Based on the controversial novel, the film offers a sharp satire to the dark side of yuppie culture in the '80s, while setting forth a vision that is both terrifying and chilling.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome movie to begin with, and Blu-ray makes it so much better.......2007-06-12

This is a great film, but I'm not going to go into the writing, acting, or directing, here - I like to rate the quality of the video, audio and extras when it comes to Blu-ray, because I think that's what people want to know - they can get all that other info off of a movie rating site.

So how is the quality - in a word: FANTASTIC! The video quality is awesome, as only Blu-ray can provide, and the sound is captivating. I've heard people complaining about the transfer of this film and I disagree. The "washed out" or "grainy" look people are complaining about has nothing to do with the transfer - it's just how the movie is supposed to look. The washed out affect is there to reflect the mind of the killer, and how he sees things.

Another great bd to add to your collection. I highly recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars Hey Paul!!!.......2007-04-11

This has to be one of the best movies ever made. Christian Bale put on one of the greastest performances by actor that i have ever seen. He really deserved an oscar for the role. As far as the picture quality of the movie for blu-ray, I would have to say it is outstanding. One part in particular stands out, when Patrick Bateman Peels his facial mask off his face I think the picture jumps thru the screen. Its as though your looking right at him. Go Buy this movie and you won't be disapointed.

    5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Movie ~~~ * * * * * 5 Stars!.......2007-03-19

This movie has a wonderful soundtrack. Christian Bale is magnificent! His character is one that is inside everyone, and the ending has a great twist that I have found to leave some confused. I watched it twice before really understanding the ending. This is a movie you can watch over and over because of Christian Bale's character, Patrick, having such a weird sence of being, and very misunderstood sence of humor! I can not recommend this movie enough! The color is very brillant as well.

    2 out of 5 stars Great film, so-so Blu-ray.......2007-02-18

I'm a little ticked at LionsGate, I thought the shaky picture quality of the first wave of Blu-ray's was a thing of the past, now this. There is "ringing" and dirt in this transfer and I think given the limited number of Bluray titles out there, they ought to make a more concerted effort at keeping the quality higher than this. I guess I was expecting more, and reading the faint praise of the other two reviews, I see it's not just me.

4 out of 5 stars Video Quality Review (Blu-ray).......2007-02-07

In a word, theatre. A bit of dirt, a touch of grain, some obvious edge enhancement at times, even somewhat muted contrast but still nice if flat coloring, great flesh tones, and plenty of detail gives this blu-ray transfer a night at the local cinema feel. I didn't mind it. Not that this type of transfer should be encouraged but given the material I sort of liked the look. Reminded me of when I used to go out to see a movie. Truth be told the print used needs some cleanup and titles needing some cleanup should get it before going HD. My rating is a little generous but given the film's setting of the decadent 80s the weathered megaplex look, even if due to lack of care, worked rather well.

3 out of 5 stars Okay film, but Lauren Ambrose is GREAT in it!.......2005-08-31

"Psycho Beach Party" is a parody of teen slasher horror films, taking place in the 1960's. It's a combination of beach movie, horror film, and camp. It's really not a very good movie for the general public, but as a cheesy camp flick it has its appeal, and it's worth at least a rent, at least for people who like this kind of John Waters-esque camp. My main complaint is that it seems to try a bit too hard. But it's a great movie if you're in a certain kind of relaxed mood. Anyway, we have a copy of it in our collection, and re-watched it yesterday.

Florence "Chicklet" Forrest (Lauren Ambrose, of "Six Feet Under") is the highlight of the whole movie, and makes the film worthwhile just on her merits alone. Her character has multiple personalites, the main two being the nice, peppy Florence, but the hilarious one is her alter-ego "Anne Bowen", a dominiatrix minx. Ambrose switches back and forth seamlessly and hilariously between these two personalities (and a minor third one).

The story: Florence and her best friend Berdine (Danni Wheeler) get involved in a series of murders after Florence starts hanging out with the all-male surfers' club, wanting to be part of the group. Captain Monica Stark (played by writer, actor and novelist Charles Busch, who for some reason saw fit to be cast in this female part - he is not really funny, and the character is treated as if she were really female, instead of a obvious man in drag) is the officer in charge of the case. Add to the mix a sequestered B-horror film actress, Bettina Barnes (Kimberley Davies), Florence's picture-perfect mother, Ruth (Beth Broderick), psychology major dropout Starcat (Nicholas Brendon, of the TV series "Buffy The Vampire Slayer"), the catty Marvel Ann (Amy Adams, of "Drop Dead Gorgeous"), Swedish exchange student, Lars (Matt Kessler), Kathleen Robertson as the bitchy, wheelchair-bound Rhonda, whom you really just want to literally push out of her chair, and the supposedly omnipotent Kanaka (Thomas Gibson), a great soundtrack, and you've got a completely silly, fun film for lovers of the cheesy camp genre.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome beach parody and a Girl I once knew.......2005-07-25

I originally saw this movie in 2003 on HBO, thats when I fell in love with the movie, I am also Originally from San Diego California, needles to say the beach was my backyard, so this beach paradoy was cool. I loved the characters and Lauren Ambrose (chicklet) was impressive. The plot was not the best in the world thats not to say it wasn't good; it's just that there's something about this film that makes you feel young again, and Lauren Ambrose performance was terrific!.
I bought my DVD 7/2005, because I met a girl in college this year that reminded me of someone I had seen before, and I tried finding this DVD for over three month, I didn't remember the name of it, but I remembered I enjoyed it. So finally I remembered the name of the movie; as to the girl I met in college I became good friends with her. She's my own personal Chicklet, plus she looks like Lauren Ambrose the actor.
to cut it short this film was beautyfully crafted with the budget they had; only one regret, the commentary doesn't inlude the whole cast, very dissapointed, I wish they had the cast come back or at least Ambrose and make a comentary. This DVD is a good collection for those who love Good Humorous independent film PLots..

4 out of 5 stars "Some afternoon, you should come over and we can play beauty parlour.".......2005-07-18

"Psycho Beach Party" is a spoof of teen slasher horror films, and it smoothly blends in the salient features of the genre to produce a camp, cheesy homage. Perky Gidget look-a-like Florence "Chicklet" Forrest (Lauren Ambrose) and best friend film theory obsessed Berdine (Danni Wheeler) find themselves involved in a series of maniacal murders. Captain Monica Stark (Charles Busch) is the glamorous officer in charge of the case, and plenty of suspects and great characters add to the entertainment. There's B horror film actress ditzy Bettina Barnes (Kimberley Davies), Chicklet's all-too perfect mother, Ruth Forrest (Beth Broderick), the jealous Marvel Ann (Amy Adams), psychology major dropout Starcat (Nicholas Brendon), Swedish exchange student, Lars (Matt Kessler), and a beach full of surfers led by Kanaka (Thomas Gibson).

The police investigation is complicated by Captain Monica Stark's past passion for Kanaka, and also by Chicklet's split personalities. Is Chicklet a sweet naive would-be surfer groupie, or is she a powerful, vengeful dominatrix? Is she the vicious killer? Watch the film, listen to the great soundtrack, and wade through the fun for the solution to the multiple mysteries.

There are some great lines here. Most of them fall flat, but they're great nonetheless: "One day soon, you'll explode into a woman," "I don't want my girl spending Xmas in a home for unwed mothers," "You've got the sex drive of a milk dud." If you like camp, or if you like cheesy films, then you may enjoy "Psycho Beach Party." It's probably going to be one of those films you either love or can't stand, and the film is destined to be a cult classic. Written by actor, playwright, novelist Charles Busch, "Psycho Beach Party" isn't as wildly funny as "Die Mommie Die", but it's highly entertaining, nonetheless--displacedhuman

    1 out of 5 stars Horrible..........2005-07-05

Lemme say this I wasn't expecting this 'cuz I thought it was good at first. But to me it was a bit too corny 4 me or I'll say too generic. Y'know the lines are good and everything. But it needs alot of attention and alot of creativity see what I mean? I wanted to buy this but this is definitely a no-brainer 4 me. 'Cuz it's missing sumthin. And definitely I didn't buy it either just catched it on Cable On-Demand 1 time. Nice work but wouldn't recommend it.

As to say try more variety movies than this for example OUT OF EDEN, DR. JEKYLL AND MS. HYDE, UNFAITHFUL, CRUEL INTENTIONS SEQUEL (both 1 and 2), GIRL, THE LOVER, ONCE BITTEN, BOOGIE NIGHTS, AUTO FOCUS, 25TH HOUR, HE GOT GAME, BABY BOY, NIKITA BLUES, BANK ROBBER, etc. including a few X-rated flicks BIKINI AIRWAYS, LORD OF THE G-STRINGS, PLAY-MATE OF THE APES, just to name a few.

    4 out of 5 stars A Mother's Love.......2007-05-24

"PSYCHO II", a 'twenty-years-later' tale, could have been a total disaster. But with a story, though far-fetched, that extends naturally from the first one & includes and/or name-drops characters from Hitchcock's awesome original film, "PSYCHO II" succeeds. Loaded with an authentic slasher-flick feel combined with a post-giallo approach (haunting score, jaunty camera angles partially cribbed from the original, a 'whodunit' plot), this flick feels more inspired than your average case of cash-in 'sequel-itis'.

I'm probably not saying anything new here, since the movie's been out for so long and is all but forgotten by anyone besides genre fans looking to complete their collections... but if you're like me, & you remember this pic vaguely and want to catch up on the old-school nostalgia tip, I'd say pick up "PSYCHO II". Because where the first film's tame-by-today's-standards approach doesn't really feel very scary in retrospect (aside from everybody's favorite seminal shower scene), and is more of a study in film-making technique than anything at this point, "PSYCHO II" is just a spooky, fun ride. It has a couple of good jumps and, more effectively, some truly eerie scenes (particularly the foreboding weirdness when Norman Bates believes he's talking to his 'real' mother on the phone). Anthony Perkins, reprising his infamous Bates role, is pretty spot-on here, and considering the teen demographic this one had to play to, there's a couple of pretty gruesome, '80s-style kill set pieces. These elements, combined with an ending ALMOST as good as the original's, make "PSYCHO II" a much better second installment than most of its retread kin from the same era. And it's certainly finer than any of the other junky later installments in the 'PSYCHO' franchise.

    4 out of 5 stars Pretty good..........2007-04-11

This was a good second installment of psycho. Ofcourse I never really fell in love with the psycho series. Never really cared to. I doubt I will purchase the third installment. I just wanted to atleast see the second movie in the series. If your into the psycho franchise, then get this move, otherwise just rent it.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Part II For The Classic Original.......2007-04-08

Psycho II is a great movie. What happens when a mentally ill man who has killed in the past is released back into the very community where the murders were committed? Well just take a gander at this movie and find out. Some folks accept Norman Bates but others have plans for him. Who can he trust? Does he deserve a second chance? This dvd release is in widescreen and looks great.

5 out of 5 stars Just as good as the original.......2007-02-17

I remember seeing this when I was younger and getting scared out of my mind. Now that I am older, I see it from a more psychological/suspenseful sense...and it is even better! Sequels usually pale in comparision to the original, but this one stands on its own. It not only has a great storyline, but also adds a great continuation to the Psycho history.

Psycho II deals with Norman Bates' battle with sanity as those he harmed attempt to push him back over the edge. All the while you are thinking--is mother really dead?--is Norman committing the murders or is it all in his mind? I would positively recommend Psycho II to fans of the original and new fans who want to explore the world of Psycho.

4 out of 5 stars Suprisingly good sequel........2006-08-23

22 years later after the incident at the Bates Motel, Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) has been released out of the mental institute for the criminally insane and is back home. Even though he's back, he still feels haunted by mother's voice and has a second job as a cook at a diner, he's gotten strange phone calls and notes from someone playing Mother so he or she can drive him back to his original state of insanity.

Very good sequel to Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece of horror has good acting and has Perkins reprising his role as everyone's favorite looney with Meg Tilly, Vera Mills (From the original), Robert Loggia and Dennis Franz co-star. Jerry Goldsmith's score is half as good as the original's score and there's plenty of good scares to make one hell of a good sequel to an all-time masterpiece, there's also a nice twist at the end of this movie.

The DVD has good picture and sound quality with the only extra being the theatrical trailer, if you liked the original then i suggest you give this a try.

Numerous critics had already sharpened their knives even before Gus Van Sant's shot-for-shot color "re-creation" of the 1960 black-and-white Hitchcock classic was released, chiding the Good Will Hunting director for defiling hallowed ground. This intriguing cinematic curiosity, though, is hardly as sacrilegious as critics would lead you to believe. If anything, Van Sant doesn't take enough liberties with his almost slavish devotion to the material, now updated with modern references. At times, you wish Van Sant would cut loose with a little spontaneity, a little energy, a little something. Unfortunately, when he does venture outside Hitchcock's parameters, with inserted shots of storm clouds during the murder sequences, it's to little effect. Granted, he liberally splashes color throughout the film (especially in the case of the infamous shower scene), and this is a great-looking movie, but in his obsession with adding a new physical dimension to the film, there's little insight into these characters that Hitchcock hadn't already provided. Vince Vaughn, a robotic and giggly Norman, doesn't crawl under your skin the way boy-next-door Anthony Perkins did, and Anne Heche is admirable if not very sympathetic in the Janet Leigh role. Van Sant does score a minor coup, though, in his casting of the supporting roles: Julianne Moore provides a welcome shot of energy as Heche's irritable and curious sister, William H. Macy is a perfect small-time detective, Viggo Mortensen is studly enough to make you understand why Heche would want to run away with him, and James LeGros walks away with his one brief scene as a used car salesman. And Danny Elfman's gorgeous rerecording of Bernard Herrmann's score is a potent supporting character unto itself. Students and fans of the original film will get a kick out of the modern revisions, but don't expect anything of Hitchcockian caliber; watch it for the sum of its intriguing parts, but not the whole. --Mark Englehart

I don't want to even give this one star! IT STINKS. Period. Why on God's green earth would you remake a classic movie??? What is the point?! Both Vince Vaughn and Anne Heche stink as actors in the first place so I kind of knew it would be a bomb. My boyfriend and I watched the first 10 minutes of it and then he got up from the chair. I said "where are you going?" and he said "to turn this **** off and go return it to the video store." And that he did!

1 out of 5 stars All you have to do is compare the 1960 and 1998 cover art.......2007-05-16

I saw Psycho back in middle school about ten years ago. I got my mom to rent it for me b/c she told me how good of a film it was. I remember watching 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents' on Nick@Nite which I LOVED, so I decided to check out his movies. I watched PSYCHO all by myself in our finished, yet still creepy den, and was COMPLETELY unprepared for what happened to Marion! It was obvious that Norm was a little "off," however, like someone else said, he seemed so shy and so awkward that you would have never suspected him. You would have thought that the extent of his weirdness was being a Peeper. I was officially creeped out during the shower scene (my mom did not even mention this to me) and just the image of Janet Leigh's pupil and that shower drain was enough to make me turn on the lights. I'm sitting in the dark in my apartment now watching GOLDEN GIRLS, and just typing about this movie gives me chills. Count me in the number that had to give themselves pep talks to take showers. Anyway, the movie was set up in such a way that you really thought Norman's mother was a menace! From the creepy window scenes, to the voice, to him carrying "her" down the stairs and then the climax at the end, it was one big shocking ride.

Fast forward to this triumphant tragedy. When I used to faithfully read Entertainment Weekly, I remember reading about this remake. I remember reading and seeing the shot-by-shot images and seeing Anne Heche laying in the tub. I thought "what a crock!" I definitely refused to spend my hard earned high school PT job money on this. So I caught it on some cable channel in college, and I was absolutely offended. First off, if you're going to remake it, at least UPDATE it. The dialogue was silly b/c obviously society is a lot less worried about being subtle. You simply cannot be taken seriously when you acknowledge that the time frame is different yet do nothing to move the movie forward 30-plus years. Everything was gratuitous. Psycho needed no nakedness, no self-pleasuring, etc. Again, where's the subtlety? It is not a stretch to believe that Norman's stuffed birds got an eyeful after he watched Marion undress. Why is nothing left to the imagination anymore?

I agree that only WHMacy and JMoore gave good performances. They are good actors period, but their roles in the original (although John and Vera were great) were not as key as Norman and Marion. Anne and Vince had HUGE shoes to fill. Vince works better in comedy and I can always take or leave Anne. There was no connection w/these characters. Of course Marion was wrong for taking the money, but who can say they didn't hold their breath waiting for the officer to back off? Who didn't hold their breath when Arbogast was interrogating Norman and clearly rattling him (same for Sam)? None of that exists in this version.

About my heading discussing the cover art. Even though Janet Leigh is screaming on the cover, I still had no idea she DIED and even moreso so EARLY in the film. Contrast that with the obvious bloodbath on this version's cover. Less is more.

I really feel for those who only have this version to go by or see this before Hitchcock's brilliant film, and cannot see what a shame this movie is.

1 out of 5 stars Hitchcock is turning over in his grave!!.......2007-02-07

I really hate to even give this one star. I really enjoyed some films by director Gus Van Zandt, like "Drugstore Cowboy" and "To Die For"; but, after he remade Hitchcock's classic "Psycho", I don't care if he ever makes another film again. First of all, this is a film that does not need to be remade. Especially a shot for shot COLOR (?) remake. Hitch shot "Psycho" in B&W on purpose! He had a reason for not using color in the film. And, for Gus Van Zandt not to get that just proves that he has no clue as to what made Hitch's masterpiece of cinema a classic to begin with, no idea of what made that film such a classic that it still is today.
Not only is the film as flat as a penny on a train track, but for some unknown reason, Van Zandt felt the need to insert completely unneccesary shots, like storm clouds, and (what was he thinking?!?!) scenes of Norman masturbating while he's peeping. That was very offensive to any fan of the original, because the suspense is now replaced with repulsion! But, to me, the ultimate crime was at the end: Instead of freeze framing on the liscence plate of the car as it is being pulled from the marsh, Van Zandt for God knows what reason allows his camera to keep rolling, letting the scene play out during the duration of credits. What a travesty to anything Hitchcock!!
People have slammed director Brian DePalma for borrowing from Hitchcock (one of the many reasons that I love DePalma!), and some have even declared his classic "Dressed To Kill" a "Psycho" rip off; but, at least it had a very new and fresh angle. Even DePalma wouldn't be as stupid as to try and remake a Hitchcock classic. There is no need when you can still watch the original films by the Master Of Suspense, available in most stores and Amazon on VHS and/or DVD.
Van Zandt should be hung in a public square for tampering with this timeless classic! Do not, I repeat, DO NOT waste your time with this piece of garbage! If you haven't seen "Psycho", seek out the original version and see what everyone is talking about when it comes to one of the best psychological suspense mystery thrillers ever made. Thank you.

2 out of 5 stars Not an entertaining movie.......2007-02-06

The casting of the movie was completely wrong in my opinion. Maybe this could have been something better, I think, if the lead actors were totally different but it remains a big question mark. As stands, it is an informal experiment in why movies can't be remade shot by shot and still retain their good qualities (even though this movie is not shot by shot, i think, but it is damn close). It really proves there was only one Hitchcock, and it's good to see just to remind people of that. One can't watch the movie without getting nostalgic to see the original.

    5 out of 5 stars A worthy Remake .......2007-01-04

I think its a worthy remake. There are 2 ways to make a remake as i see it. Either u present it in a new mood with new bright effects and up to date presentation OR u stick to the masterpeice's original idea changing just some minor details. Psycho by van gus sant does the same by Not fixing which is not broken. If u prefer the original psycho black and white with Mono sound then u can see that But for those who want a digital 5.1 psycho in color then this is your ONLY choice. I enjoyed it. Even the cast is great. Viggo MOrtensen , Julianne Moore :-)

1 out of 5 stars This is the film that made Patrick Bateman snap........2007-04-05

A debate is raging between myself and a bank teller from across the street about the validity of watching sequels in either the sequential order of release date or in the way that they were semi-intended of viewing (i.e. the prequel to the "Exorcist" prior to the original version of the film ... and that sort of logic). I am a believer of watching the films as they are released, due to the possibility of missing an element that may be voiced or uncovered in future films, he feels differently due to true logic - meaning that there may be no continuity at all, so why put myself through the torture. An interesting thought, but one that I don't quite agree with due to the "American Psycho" theory. This argumentative other believes that you could watch "American Psycho 2" without seeing the original and consider it a viewable film, because you have to disassociate yourself from the original. I disagree for the exact reason that when you attach the title to another film, even if it has nothing to do with the original - you must associate the two. The two must match, gel, or even co-exist AND for me, it is an utter disgrace when the two just fight against each other. This is the battle known as "American Psycho II: All American Girl", and alas, I was caught in the trenches.

For those that are huge fans of the Christian Bale masterpiece should whole heartily avoid this film at all costs. There is nothing, I repeat, nothing connecting these two films together outside of a title and a slight beginning reference to a man that never should have existed in the first place - one elusive Patrick Bateman. From the beginning the story makes no sense, supposed serial killer Patrick Bateman kills again, leaving a small girl to finish what he started. From that point forward, she decides to do whatever it takes to kill/capture all the serial killers of the world - thus becoming one in the process. Again, what should have just been in Bateman's mind destroys the concept that this film is balanced on - so, all we are left with are views, images, goofy music, and acting that honestly came from a Cracker Jack box. Our lead this time is Mila Kunis, of "That 70s Show fame", jumping or should I say "bubbling" right out of her character on FOX to a nearly identical character for this film. Her goal for the film, become William Shatner's teaching assistant so that she can get into Quantico and thus fulfilling her dreams to capture serial killers. What actually happens in the film is that she kills everyone in her way (everyone else is oblivious to the pile of bodies) to get that respected position. Nobody is safe, and as we prepare for the ending, a twist so predictable is thrown our way that we could care less about her, the story, or the semi-terrifying ending. Our only hope is that they decide to end the series with this film. What could the story be next? Patrick Bateman's ghost returns for more non-existent killing?

From every angle of this film, I was disgraced. I was such an enormous fan of the original film (the insanity, the characters, the violence), that to be handed a stick of bubble gum after eating veal just felt insulting. There are those that actually enjoyed this film, which just boggles my mind. How could anyone, either a fan of the original or not, enjoy this cookie-cutter film? In the commentary, director Morgan J. Freeman even admits to being a "director-for-hire", which means the story was already in place all he needed to do was put that "direct-to-video" feel to it, and it was ready for packaging, sealing, and delivery to those unsuspecting viewers who were tied into just the title. Nothing worked in this film. The music took me away from the horrors that were happening, and made me feel that I was camping at a carnival. The selection made me want to shake my hips and chew some bubble gum (odd, this is transforming into a theme to this film). The cinematography was juvenile at best. Errors erupted with leaps and bounds, and again, during the commentary the director wasn't afraid to point them out. From these low points, the only place to go was further down with acting that somehow connected well to the carnival music. Shatner tried his best, but just couldn't pull off the womanizing teacher with connections to Quantico. The chemistry between him and the other ladies felt scripted and old. In just a short twenty days, one probably doesn't have the chance to get to know the rest of your cast, so just read your lines and pray for the best. For those wondering how Kunis did with this role, just listen to her in the commentary. Pathetic would be a good word, amateur would be another, and just to give you that third scoop, she was unbelievable at best. Freeman attempted to make her this convincing detail oriented killer, with a killer body, but the result was anything but scary - in fact - one could go so far to say that it was "killer funny". Can I say it one more time? Nothing in this film worked. I don't mean to be lacking detail, but from the initial scene it was obvious that we were on a downward path - did Morgan J. Freeman even see the original?

I have no sympathy for this film. "American Psycho II: All American Girl" was a debauchery to the series, to the words that Bret Easton Ellis put on the page, and to cinema itself. I have no respect for those that say that this should not be paired with the original, but instead should just be watched on its own. The original "American Psycho" was well acted, nail-bitingly genre bending, and continually asks me to question the value of a male dominated workplace on Wall Street. In the original, the question became what happens to a man that has everything - in the sequel, the question transforms into "What would a girl do to get everything?" The themes are even the same. This film is a prime example of Hollywood looking to capitalize on a cult film by merely selling the title. Oh, what a horrid experiment gone wrong.

If you wanted a cheap version of the original, I suggest this one. It contains no artistic value, no moral thought-provoking moments, and definitely nothing that could be called unique or creative. The word original was never in Morgan J. Freeman's dialog. Listen to the audio commentary if you don't believe me, these Freeman and Kunis give hope to the aspiring director (who doesn't mind selling out for a paycheck) as well as a disgraceful taste to the human race.

This was cheap - with a capital C.

    2 out of 5 stars Train Wreck Of A Movie.... {2 Stars}.......2007-03-01

I can't really add much to the reviews. I mean, 76 reviews and a 2 star average. I think that speaks for itself. I only sat through this tripe because I think Mila Kunis is incredibly hot. Even that wasn't enough to keep me from trading it in for store credit. I gave it 2 stars for having Mila in it, but it's really a 1 star release.

    Avoid avoid avoid.

1 out of 5 stars Worse movie ever. Why did i bother ?.......2007-02-01

Patrick Bateman is dead, but his evil legacy continues with Rachael Newman (Mila Kunis), the only victim who managed to escape Bateman's grasp. Rachael will get rid of anyone who threatens her chances of becoming teaching assistant to the infamous Dr. Daniels, a professor and former FBI profiler. In a world where the stakes are higher and sex can kill, terror lurks in the new American Psycho.

Rather than trying to pick up where American Psycho left off, this sequel goes a different route by focusing on a whole new cast of characters. If you didn't already know, the first movie was based on the controversial book of the same name by author Bret Easton Ellis, who had no involvment what-so-ever in the making of this movie (he never wrote a sequel). Sadly, the movie is terrible, trite, and overall, a failure. Where the book (and, to a certain degree, the first movie) take a satirical view of the yuppie-laden 80s, this movie simply tries to be a violence-driven psycho-thriller, and loses all the ambience Ellis created for the original story. It's headlining star, Mila Kunis (better known for her role as Jackie in That 70s Show) does her best to deliver her role as a college student fascinated by serial killers, and determined to make her way into the FBI's training academy.

But her flat, un-emotional performance really only contributes to the movie's overall shortcomings, rather than attaining it's probable goal of setting her up as a student driven to succeed, even at the cost of becoming exactly what she intends to stop as a future FBI agent. This movie is a good waste of time, and may be worth renting if you really can't find anything else to watch. But be forwarned, fans of the original movie, and especially of Ellis' book will be especially dissapointed. There are certainly far worse movies from the same year than this, but that doesn't make this one any more capable of standing out. Sadly, Ellis' books simply don't translate well to film, they lose to much in the transer. But this flick goes a step beyond that by trying to make a sequel to an Ellis book, without actually having one of Ellis' writings to draw from
