This third installment of the hugely popular Scream trilogy doesn't have the moxie and smarts of its two predecessors, but it's still a great thrill ride. Scripted by Ehren Kruger (from an outline by Scream writer Kevin Williamson), Scream 3 takes the three surviving characters from the first two films--beleagured heroine Sidney (Neve Campbell), ruthless TV journalist Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox Arquette), and hapless deputy Dewey (David Arquette)--and transplants them to the environs of Hollywood. Turns out a familiarly masked killer is stalking the cast of Stab 3, the third installment of the movies within the Scream movies. (Following all this? Don't worry, it's not entirely vital to the plot.) It's supposed to be a fun house of mirrors, with each character encountering the actor playing themselves and visiting reconstructed sets of the murder scenes, but it doesn't have the same snap and crackle of the first two films. Rather than parodying the teen horror genre, Scream 3 seems to be playing by the rules instead of breaking them gleefully, and its postmodern plotting is a little too fast and loose. Williamson's presence is sorely missed--it's the difference between hitting one out of the park and scoring a solid triple. Director Wes Craven, though, still brings his die-hard energy to the proceedings, from the requisite heart-pumping prologue to the go-for-broke (but somewhat predictable) ending. Kudos to Campbell, Cox, and especially Arquette for bringing spirit to characters who should be justifiably tired of being corpse magnets; Campbell is remarkably graceful considering she's saddled with plot twists involving heretofore undisclosed family baggage. And in the film's one inspired stroke of brilliance, Cox's Gale is trailed by a hilarious Parker Posey as the actress playing Gale in Stab 3, who astutely realizes that if they're caught by the killer together, it'll be the real Gale who gets it. If Scream 3 had stuck to such ingenious parody throughout, it would have been a real winner; as it is, it's an energetic shadow of itself. With Scream alums Liev Schreiber and Jamie Kennedy in brief but winning cameos. --Mark Englehart

The Ultimate Scream Collection...well, almost........2006-12-24
The movies in this box set are enticing and highly enjoyable. Plus, the bonus features on each disc are awesome. I just want to point out one thing. The fourth disc's dvd-rom material is a major let down. It operates on the PC Friendly program and I can't get it to work. The dvd-rom features do look nice, but I haven't been able to get access to them yet. This isn't just my occurrence, I've seen this posted all over the internet. This isn't enough to bring the whole collection down to four stars, though. Thus it is almost the ultimate Scream collection.
Great disc: disappointing film. .......2006-06-21
I had purchased Scream 3 as part of the Box set of Scream films. Although the actual disc presentation and extras are exceptional, to me the film let me down.
The premise is intriguing: that there are more mysteries and unanswered questions surrounding the life and death of Maureen Prescott that even her daughter, Sidney, didn't know about. But somehow the plot premise that Maureen was a B movie actress in horror films seems so out of left field it really doesn't go well with the rest of what has happened in the previous films.
There are some excellent scenes and acting in the film. The most haunting being Sidney's visit to the movie set and seeing the exact replica of her and Stu's home from Woodsboro and viewing the scene of Tatum's demise. The opening sequence is also well done, but not as good as the other two. Parker Posey does steal the film as Jennifer Jolie and Neve Campbell is always good as Sidney Prescott.
An early sequence where a member of a class that Gale Weathers is lecturing asks her if after all the terror that has occured, it was really worth going after the story. That to me would've been a starting point to a similar but different plot.
My plot would consist of this: There is a third film being done in the Stab series, but they would actually shoot in the town of Woodsboro, which has the community up in arms. The attacks by the killer would be directed at the cast, but instead of just pictures of Maureen Prescott: the killer would leave pictures of all the victims starting with Maureen or maybe Casey Becker(Drew Barrymore). There would be another reporter but their story would cover the human element of the story, interviewing family members of the victims. As the body count mounts, a secret would be revealed about the Prescott family and the real reason for all the trouble would be revealed in the final act that would take place at the house where it all started.
I think the First two films are fine book ends, but the third one sticks out like a sore thumb.
