If you're not a connoisseur of graphic horror and gruesome gore, you'd better steer clear of this wicked 1992 horror-comedy from the demented mind and delirious camera of New Zealand-born writer-director Peter Jackson. However, if nonstop mayhem and extreme violence are your idea of great entertainment, you're sure to appreciate Jackson's gleefully inventive approach to a story that can judiciously be described as sick, twisted, and totally outrageous. The movie's central character is a poor schmuck named Lionel who's practically enslaved to his domineering mother. But when ol' Mum gets bitten by a rare and poisonous rat monkey from Skull Island and is turned into a flesh-eating zombie, Lionel has the unfortunate task of keeping Mama happy while fending off all the other zombies that result from her voracious feeding frenzies. If you've read this far, you'll either be crying out for censorship or eagerly awaiting your first viewing (or second, or third...) of this wildly clever and audaciously uninhibited movie. And while director Jackson would later achieve critical success with his fact-based drama Heavenly Creatures, his talent is readily evident in this earlier effort. If you find this kind of thing even remotely appealing, consider Dead Alive a must-see movie. --Jeff Shannon

Peter Jackson proves that if gory is funny, then excessive gory is downright hysterical. As our hapless hero wades through an ankle-deep puddle of blood and entrails, brandishing a lawnmower like a portable Cuisinart at the climax of this zombie-fest, you'll either be screaming with laughter or fleeing in disgust. Timothy Balme stars as the shy mama's boy Lionel, whose controlling shrew of a mother (Elizabeth Moody) starts rotting away, literally, with a vague supernatural disease. Mother dies but refuses to stay down, rising as a flesh-eating zombie infecting everyone she bites. Lionel tries to hide her in the basement, but the victims keep piling up and finally break out when Lionel's blackmailing uncle (a grotesque, leering Ian Watkin) throws a party in the house. It's snack time as the guests become undead hors d'oeuvres and rise again as hungry soldiers of the new zombie army marching on Lionel and his girl Pacquita (the lovely Diana Penalver). New Zealand goremeister Jackson pulls out all stops in this truly outrageous sanguinary comedy, from gross-out gags of oozing puss and rotting body parts at a formal dinner to slapstick antics as Lionel tries to keep his flesh-hungry mother sedated during the funeral to the final Freudian showdown between a now-monstrous mother and the newly liberated Lionel. If you like your horror with a sense of humor or your comedy with gristle, then wade through this taboo-busting bucket of blood. --Sean Axmaker

1 out of 5 stars Worst movie I have ever seen. Even this review is a waste of my time........2007-07-05

Absolutley horrible. That this movie aveages a 4 1/2 star rating perplexes me more then the thoughts of an afterlife or God's possible existance. What an incredible waste of money and time.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning!.......2007-06-27

What can i say about this movie is STUNNING! What else can you expect from one of the great movie director in the world?

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious! Absolutely Fantastic!.......2007-06-20

I purchased this movie based on all the good reviews and we are definately not disappointed. My boyfriend and I absolutely loved it! It had an interesting plot line and the zombie gore was very original. The way the zombies looked, the things they did and the way they were killed was great! I'm sorry I can't tell you any more without giving anything away. If you like zombies and comedy, I would highly recommend this movie. We are still talking about it!

5 out of 5 stars SPLATSTICK AT IT'S GORIEST!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-09

I am ashamed to admitt that(being the horror buff that I am) up until about a year ago I have never heard of this movie!! I new Peter Jackson made a few horror films before L.O.T.R., and had seen The Frighteners, and heard about his first film, Bad Taste. I had heard about this movie from a friend then seen it reviewed on BRAVO'S Even Scairer Movie Moments so I decided to pick it up. Boy, was I ever blown away!! This has to be one of the goriest movies ever made. The catch is it's not realistic nor is it exploitive, what it is is the text-book definition of splatstick horror comedy. If you loved "The Evil Dead 2" then you absolutly MUST see this movie The violence and gore in Dead Alive(and there is more than you could ever imagine) are used to compilment the humor. I'm not into giving spoilers so I'll give a brief overview. Lionel is a very repressed person. One day Lionel is at the zoo with a girl he is sweet on and his very overbearing mother. His mother is bitten by the dreaded Sumatran Rat Monkey and soon dies, but what kind of horror movie would this be if she were to stay dead. It's pretty easy to see what happens next, mother returns, Lionel tries to hide her, she bites and infects others. The result is the goriest sluaghterfest ever put to film. What can I do for not seeing this gem sooner? Watching everyday would certainly not be a crime!!!

The director/producer team that created Trainspotting turn their dynamic cinematic imaginations to the classic science fiction scenario of the last people on Earth. Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma to find London deserted--until he runs into a mob of crazed plague victims. He gradually finds other still-human survivors (including Naomie Harris), with whom he heads off across the abandoned countryside to find the source of a radio broadcast that promises salvation. 28 Days Later is basically an updated version of The Omega Man and other post-apocalyptic visions; but while the movie may lack originality, it makes up for it in vivid details and creepy paranoid atmosphere. 28 Days Later's portrait of how people behave in extreme circumstances--written by novelist Alex Garland (The Beach)--will haunt you afterward. 4 out of 5 stars Hey it Could Happen...........2007-07-05

I thought this movie was great. It's one of those what if movies that was done really well. Not corny like some where it isn't believable.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!!.......2007-07-05

This is one great movie. I lived in London for several months and watching this great European city devastated in a so visually convincing manner was a unique experience to me.

The acting is superb, particularly that of Cillian Murphy who portraits Jim, a humble delivery man who had had a traffic accident, who is the film's main character. (On a personal note, I think Murphy is soon to be recognized as the first-caliber actor he is.)

In several days, 28 Days Later is also a breakthrough movie. Unlike past zombie movies who heavily relied on actors moving awkward and slowly, this movie makes them FAST and all of preternatural stamina. They "infected ones" also cough large amounts of blood, which can infect other people's membranes. By adding this new, well-thought, the film makes the zombies waaaaay scarier. Also, while the latter can barely think, they capable of enduring virtually any kind of pain --- including running with their bodies on blames. Also the reason they became zombies (or, more appropriately, "infected") is because their bodies has a rare, experimental virus called the Rage Virus. This man-made microorganism is transmitted in a matter of seconds by bites or by contact with membranes --eyes, mouth, and so forth.

All characters are deep, contrasting, and utterly convincing. Jim is an idealist, ready to die for his love ones; Selena begins a pessimist who thinks humankind doomed, someone who would kill her own father, mother, or best friend to remain "in the blink of an eye" to remain alive for just one more day. As time pass by, Selena is transformed by Jim's upbeat demeanor. They meet a caring, generous man called Frankie and his obedient, timid daughter Hannah, who had survived against all odds because they have one another. The four then decided to go near Manchester, where a cure has apparently been found . . .

I agree with many of the reviewers: this is not really a horror film. It's a tragic, deeply moving film with great innovations for the zombie genre. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars 28 Days Later.......2007-07-04

This is a great movie. But you can't take it as how they advertise it, as a horror film. It isn't scary, although there are a few scary scenes. 28 Days Later isn't just another zombie movie in many ways. For one thing, there aren't zombies. Zombies are the living dead, the monsters in 28 Days are living humans, infected with a virus. This means they can die any way a human would, making a more believable story. On a whole, the movie is more of a mystery than a horror film. Throughout the story your trying to find out more about the virus. In the beginning you see how it is released but you don't know that much about it or how it spread. And besides the question of what the virus is there's how far it has spread. The film takes place in England, and is thus isolated from the rest of the world leaving the question of whether or not the rest of the world has been ravaged. The acting is great as well, while the story revolves around the main characters fight for survival their emotions and relationships are clear. This movie is much more believable than movies like Day of the Dead or Resident Evil, and in my opinion much better as well.

With laughs and gross-outs aplenty, Slither is the best horror comedy since Shaun of the Dead. Having written for the jubilant trash-mongers at Troma Films before scripting 2004's well-received remake of Dawn of the Dead, writer-director James Gunn crafted this hilarious splatter-fest as an homage to the comically violent horror films of the 1970s and '80s, and he gets it just right with a low-budget look, perfect casting, grisly make-up effects and judicious use of CGI gore. The story's a deliberate monster-mash, borrowing from a dozen other movies with its plot about an invasion of slithery slug-like parasites from outer space, arriving (via meteorite) in the redneck town of Wheelsy, South Carolina, where they turn most of the local yokels into flesh-eating zombies. The first victim (played by Michael Rooker) turns into a squid-like, multi-tentacled host monster (kill him and you kill 'em all), and his terrified wife (Elizabeth Banks) teams up with Wheelsy's sheriff (Nathan Fillion, from Firefly and Serenity) and mayor (comedic scene-stealer Gregg Henry) to eradicate the alien threat before Wheelsy turns into Slugville. Gunn handles comedy and horror with exuberant flair, and Slither's greatest strength is that it never aspires to be anything more than it is: 96 minutes of good laughs and gruesomeness, served up with the kind of gleeful abandon that only true horror buffs can fully appreciate.--Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A funny scary movie!.......2007-06-27

If your a scary movie person like me you will get a kick out of this movie. It is so scary at times and predictable that it gives you a laugh! Definitely would recommend it if you are watching it with friends! Bring the popcorn but be careful... it will end up on the floor and in between the couch.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, bloody, and fun..........2007-05-23

Having grown up with such gems as Invaders from Mars (NOT!) Night of the Comet (Again, NOT!) and a whole host of Nightmare on Elmstreets and Friday the 13ths, I found this movie to be a breath of fresh air. Along the lines of such cult classics as The Toxic Avenger and Nuke 'em High, this film is fun and funny.

The cast is great. Unlike so many movies, horror and otherwise, they seemed natural, and not like a bunch of people acting like other people. Nathan Fillion is one of the rare actors who seems to be this way in everything he does, and it's such a pleasure to watch, from Firefly to Slither. The director, Mr. Gunn seems to be really good with people who can work this way, and I say Kudos!

Not for young kids, and not for people who prefer nothing but hack & slash gore. It's a pretty good story, well done on the visual effects and creature creation, only, they forgot the slime trails....tsk, tsk... But overall, a pleasure to have in my collection.

I would highly recommend this to other people, like me, who have squeamish friends who stay too long.... and besides, you cna watch it over and over and catch some of the in jokes.

4 out of 5 stars I'll order my steak well done from now on.......2007-05-21

Actually, forget about eating meat, I'll just have a salad. This has got to be the most absurd, gross-out, need multiple barf bags film of all time. It's also funny enough not to take too seriously, so it was very entertaining. Just don't watch it right before dinner.
Some slimy alien thingy hitches a ride to Earth on a fallen meteor. It's not really interested in coexisting peacefully with the human race, instead it prefers more of the whole parasitic takeover deal with rampant chaos and destruction. This infection doesn't waste any time spreading throughout the town, the effects are pretty twisted.
Like when one lady's body inflates to the size of a hot air balloon, she exclaims "something's wrong with me!" She looks 10times worse than Veruca Salt at the Wonka chocolate factory.
This movie is over-filled with other slimy grotesque moments with blood and puss and unspeakable filth that goes WAAAAY over the top. You gotta love it!

3 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised!.......2007-05-21

This movie was a hilarious parody of the horror genre. The use of effects, over the top acting, everything, combined to make it silly, but very watchable, adventure. It was gross, violent, odd, and probably not worth repeated viewing. But it was fun, and well worth seeing once!

In a new twist on an old theme, the coolly stylish British miniseries Ultraviolet brings vampires into the 21st century, though the word vampire is never uttered in this mix of The X-Files and somber British TV mysteries like Touching Evil. Jack Davenport is a police detective who stumbles into an elite government agency when his partner and best friend suddenly becomes a nocturnal thug and bites him on the neck. Davenport reluctantly cuts off his old friends and lovers to join the team, which includes Idris Elba as a merciless ex-soldier and Susannah Harker as a medical researcher, and investigate a web of counterfeiting operations, banking scams, and experimental labs featuring human guinea pigs. "What they're researching is pollution: contamination of their blood supply," offers team leader and former priest Philip Quast, but the question remains: are they soulless monsters out to conquer mankind, or a persecuted minority who just want to live in peace with the humans?

Writer-director-creator Joe Ahearne brings all the traditional vampire tropes up to date; not only do they lack reflections in a mirror, but they don't show up on video and their voices don't carry over phone lines or record on audio tapes ("which makes surveillance a bitch"). Sunlight burns like an acid, and when they die they go up like a flare, leaving a pile of ash in their wake. But it's the sharp character writing, moral quandaries, and ingenious twists of this smart, stylish conspiracy thriller that make this series gripping down to the final episode.

The two-disc DVD set features an audio interview with Ahearne along with episode synopses and character notes. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Mistery.......2007-04-10

I like to watch Jack Davenport, so this performance of his is very good, his character gets you into the story, I loved his confidence. The theme is original very diferent from what I've seen about vampires, I really loved it because not everything is about blood and the mistery of the plot keeps you in suspense. Very good to spend some time watching it. I would love if there would had been more episodes.

4 out of 5 stars Handsome Man and Vampires.......2007-04-03

I bought this because I adore Jack Davenport. The series is interestingly done and creative and the cast is very good. The story follows a mysterious squad of modern vampire hunters in London. We learn all of their reasons for joining the squad and it is fun to see who will win in this good vs evil battle.

5 out of 5 stars Don't sleep on this one!.......2007-02-09

When I first saw this a few years back, I only caught three of the episodes and they weren't in order. I enjoyed the concept and episodes back then. Seeing all of them in their intended order was a treat. The concept and execution of this series was brilliant. It does away with the classical idea of vampires, and successfully makes it fresh and relevant.

This series was clever. Possibly too clever for its own good. Despite wanting to see more, I think anything over the six produced episodes would have ruined the series.

4 out of 5 stars A cut above.......2007-02-02

This series puts some new and much-welcome twists on the traditional vampire tales. The actors are very fine, looking like they genuinely believe in what they're doing and reacting to. The suspense is terrific and the only negative is...why was there never a second series done? If you're a Yank you may have to adjust to (1) the Brit accents and (2) writing that demands you engage your brain in order to follow along. I'll take UV over Buffy any day of the week!

5 out of 5 stars Ultraviolet.......2007-01-26

Excellent series. Great side stories as well as main theme. There should have been more than the one season. Too short.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good........2007-06-27

I like a good zombie movie. The ending was an interesting twist, honestly didn't see it coming. It does take a little while to get there, and it's a little confusing with the whole alien and zombie thing. It's a little slow at times, but overall i like it. Good for first-timers, and i look forward to their next one.

1 out of 5 stars They should have called it "DEAD".......2007-05-06

This movie was terrible. Whoever called this film a classic must be very easily entertained. What's with the people hanging in mid-air? What's with the rain? What's with the aliens? Where did the zombies come from? Why were the zombies still there after the aliens left?

This is a classic 'the editor should have been fired' film.

4 out of 5 stars Post structuralism meets Dawn of the Dead . . ........2007-04-05

I usually enjoy 'over-the-top' movies that play with a straight face(Think "Bruce Campbell"), and this is one of the better ones. It is a fun movie from people that obviously like the genre--they're not making fun OF it--but are having fun WITH it.

Definitely NOT predictable. I'm watching it a second time to sort out some of the twists. In addition, this is a case where not knowing the actors helps, because you have no idea who is going to survive. Well, you have some idea, but not entirely, and that adds to the fun.

The movies has the gore and the usual sort of thing one expects in the genre, but it is not creepy. When I watched it I thought of "Shawn of the Dead," in the sense that it is written/directed in a very similar spirit.

I'm glad I bought it and will probably watch it again every few years.

4 out of 5 stars This is fun.......2007-04-01

The actor Mongo whatever, is a trip to watch!! The gore is funny as hell! The shovel scene makes me cringe every time I see it. Also the cops or constables are funny as well with their shorts!. Not one to take serious. This is very much like Dead Alive among others but not as goofy.

Undead (The Speirig Brothers, 2003)

The last thing I was expecting from the surprisingly-heavily-promoted (and unsurprisingly-narrowly-released-in-America) Undead, based on the big, murky promo posters, was comedy. But that's exactly what I got. Better yet, we got a zombie flick that has pretensions of being a fifties sci-fi B movie-- imagine crossing Night of the Living Dead with The Day the Earth Stood Still with the script being written by Broken Lizard and you've got a good idea of where the Speirig Brothers are coming from here.

Rene (the stunning Felicity Mason, recently of Hollywood) is a small-town beauty queen who'll do anything to get out. She is, in fact, on the verge of doing just that when things go horribly, horribly wrong-- a meteor shower bombards the town, killing hundreds of people, all of whom rise as zombies and start attacking the other townspeople (as zombies, of course, are wont to do), turning them into zombies as well. Rene flees into the home of Marion (Inspector Gadget 2's Mungo McKay), a reclusive fisherman with a taste for weaponry. Other survivors congregate in the house, and the stage is set for a protracted siege between man and zombie. Except those aren't the only two species coming to the party...

The surprising thing about Undead is that it doesn't play its comedy straight, the way Slither or Return of the Living Dead do; there's always something slimy and uncomfortable just beneath the surface making you feel dirty as you're laughing at this. You know you're not supposed to be laughing at the stuff you're laughing at. If the Spierig Brothers, who are also responsible for the twisted, twisted script here, were attempting to simulate the unintentionally-hysterical factor of fifties B movies, they have succeeded in such a way that Undead may end up being remembered as one of the great satires of all time; a lot of movies have poked fun at the genre (and at themselves) by parodying that brand of humor, but few, if any, picked up on the ugliness that often lies beneath it. Here it is in spades.

The more I think about it, the better this movie was. You want to see this. ****

"They could f**k the human race out of existence!" warns Michael Madsen in this inevitable--and inevitably contrived--sequel to 1995's surprise sci-fi hit. He's referring to a celebrated astronaut (Justin Lazard) infected with alien DNA from his history-making Mars landing, and the half-alien Eve (Natasha Henstridge), who was created from alien-human embryo splicing by biochemist Dr. Laura Baker (Marg Helgenberger) in an effort to discover the alien species's vulnerabilities on Earth. While the astronaut sows his gruesomely wild oats with doomed women (resulting in a bevy of creepy kids in alien cocoons), Eve goes into heat until she and the astronaut can consummate their procreative lust. Sex and death are served up like money-shots in a porno flick, with an emphasis on gory flesh-regeneration, explosive pregnancies, and slimy-tentacled intercourse. All of which makes this is the kind of derivative schlock that only a true fan could love, but it's boosted to a tolerable level of entertainment by the returning cast (Madsen, Henstridge, and Helgenberger) from the previous film. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Technical Defects Abound.......2006-01-31

I did not see the prequel and got this video at a garage sale. I was diappointed. The script had some technical defects, like the Eve being contained in isolation so that she avoids "contact with males" so as to not have her sexual nature stimulated, but she is allowed to watch the "Dukes of Hazard" on TV! There is also a scene where she breaks out of her confinement clearly wearing an item of clothes that does not appear in another scene and with no time in between to change her clothes to explain it (there is only a chase scene inbetween). It was also hard to believe that the main character could have his memory intact after his head gets blown off completely and a new head replaces it. I find it hard to suspend disbelief when these kinds of inconsistencies appear in a movie. It also makes me feel that some unnecessary sloppiness went into the production. The special effects were decent but very gory. There is something strangely comedic about the sexual scenes in the middle of all the gore and tentacles, but I do not think it was intended. If it was a comedy, the gore made it hard to take it on this level.

1 out of 5 stars The movie director must have had some bad days........2006-01-14

My guess is, that the director has said, right before he started the movie; "Okay we have a okay budget, access to some.. sometimes okay special effects and some okay good actresses, but you have to do your job just as bad as the story is and if you have anything clever to say about making the movie good, then please leave".

I just don't get it! It would be so easy to make a good movie out of it! Well first of all, you probably have to a get little different version of the story and another movie director...but it would be so easy!

Just a thing like this! Eve want's to escape, so she jumps through the prison window. Okay Miss Eve is well powerfull, but she doesn't have to be, because it isn't made of bullet-proof Plexiglas. Nope, it explodes in thousands like very thin glass. Noooo it can be glass because they can't be so naïve in military security. But bullet-proof glass doesn't explode, so it must be a bad movie director!

5 out of 5 stars I'm from Baltimore,where the movie took place.......2005-12-13

If you have noticed, the movie takes place in Baltimore,MD.There is a scene where they are at Mondawmin Mall outside Downtown. But the movie was still good.My opinion is that he should not have tried to think of it anyway.Who would want to be a female alien's wife anyway by having sex?

5 out of 5 stars Good cheese.......2005-11-20

One night, while flipping through the channels I came across this movie. I had no idea what it was. Aliens were popping out of people's stomachs, but all the characters approached the threat as if it were a big joke. Honestly, I thought it was a comedy until the commercial came on and revealed that it was Species II.

From the special effects, you can tell a lot of work went into it, but it comes across more as a comedy. None of the actors are serious. Overall, the entire movie is pretty cheesy. But it's good cheese. If you're looking for hot girls, lots of killing, and a bit of comedy- then I'd say watch this movie. It's a b-movie, but a good one at those standards.

2 out of 5 stars This Species is NOT the fittest.......2005-09-10

It's more madcap fun with those mate/murder clone-aliens. Having barely learned their lesson in the first "Species" movie (hey, I like Natasha Henstridge, but there are some things even the ROTTEN REVIEW won't stand for) scientists led by Dr. Baker (Marg Helgenberger) clone another beautiful (possibly homicidal) human/alien hybrid. Named Eve, she isn't so much especially nicer than her predecessor, Syl, as simply docile - "confirmed" by her lighter hair color and the fact that she's kept away from men. Having already proven they can clone human/alien hybrids, the scientists relentlessly torture Eve in hopes of finding an effective weapon against her. (The Rotten Review couldn't understand why Baker was so desperate to discover the weaknesses of alien only they could reproduce.)

Meanwhile, Astronaut Pat Ross - the son of a powerful politician - returns from a brief visit to Mars. Unbeknownst to Ross or any of his fellow travelers, a mysterious oozing thing hitched a ride in one of his sample cases. On the return trip home, the ooze goes into action, changing Ross forever. Soon he begins a startling metamorphosis - but even sooner than that, he begins raping women. To add insult to injury (to anybody involved in the original "Alien") Ross's victims find themselves impregnated with his alien offspring, whom they "birth" in a typically gore-filled and fatal delivery. Ross tries to resist, but soon succumbs to the urge to be an inhuman being of superhuman desires. To combat Ross, the military turns to action hero Press Lenox (Michael Madsen), and then to Eve herself. Knowing of Ross's xeno-biological compulsion to mate, our heroes hope to use Eve as bait, but Eve proves she's capable of doing more than luring Ross out.

Unfortunately, that's more than we can say for this movie. There is no real plot - stuff just happens. This is easily one of the stupidest studio projects of the 1990's - in that so-bad-it's-no-good category. Despite the availability of decent-to-very-good talent (Madsen & George Dzunda, as well as Peter Boyle in a brief role as a now institutionalized scientist who warned against the Mars mission, inexplicably aware of the danger; most ironic is Peter Medak of "Let him have it" fame, as the director of this mess). What makes it even harder to stomach is that "Species 2" could have worked as a parody - and bears signs that this was somebody's intention early on (the acting sounds phoned in; the mission to mars is laughably brief - while the mars ship itself is so be-studded with corporate logos it looks less like a spaceship than a really big entrant in NASCAR; Richard Belzer is the President of the USA). Instead of being a parody of bad movies, "Species 2" becomes as poorly acted and edited as any of them, easily trailing the "Alien" series from which it ripped off heinously while having access to superior effects.

4 out of 5 stars Rewardingly Mysterious Horror; Some Unusual Stuff Going On Here.......2007-01-30

A dark, unnerving, metaphysical horror puzzler, "Infection" takes place in a struggling, understaffed Japanese hospital where a bad decision being made, ends up being followed by the slow emergence of both supernatural happenings and fiercely simmering tension among the hospital staff. Controlled exteriors tenuously cover a deepening inter-characters conflict that has people almost literally at one another's throats; a sinister green slime begins to crawl forward from cracks and corners; and finally pesonalties seem to alter and reality itself seems to be slipping around. "Infection" is highly cryptic even for Asian horror (note - I'm counting 'cryptic' as a totally different thing than 'confusing because everything is put together so haphazardly and unevenly') This is one you can interpret in different ways, possibly even get different interpretations after different watchings, and full of enigmas to try and figure out. Another quality Japanese horror movie, with a bit more of an emphasis on special effects (quality special effects) than usual. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Infection: You Thought Our Health Care System Was Scary--A Look At Two Japanese Horror Films.......2007-01-14

To be upfront, I'm not a huge fan of Americanized remakes of Japanese ghost stories or supernatural thrillers. You can keep "The Ring," "Dark Water," "Pulse" and "The Grudge"--to me, it's just hokum with little reason or rationale. You could make a shot-for-shot remake, and I'd still prefer the original. Why? I don't know, maybe it's just a bias. The Japanese ghost story has such a long history in film, maybe I've become accustomed to it--I'm seeing an evolution of the genre and it seems more natural. That doesn't mean that the plots make any more sense, but the films are generally better at evoking a mood and a sense of dread. Having recently seen two such entries in the Japanese horror lexicon, "Premonition" and "Infection," I was once again caught up in creepy goings-on and otherworldly intrigues. Both films are entertaining, if somewhat problematic, and will likely be enjoyed by those who appreciate this sort of thing.

From a technical standpoint, "Premonition" is probably the stronger of the two films. When a family on vacation stops to use a pay phone, the father stumbles on a newspaper portending the death of his daughter. Within a minute, this happens in a harrowing and well executed sequence. Some years later, the couple has separated and both are still haunted by the incident. The husband, in particular, has not recovered from the strange newspaper--no one has believed in its existence. The wife, working in the field of mental phenomena, starts to realize that perhaps her husband isn't delusional--just as he starts to be alerted with further premonitions. United, they try to piece together the history of the newspaper and some of the people who have encountered similar visions. The film evolves into a treatise on sacrifice, mental illness, and whether you can change destiny.

"Infection," on the other hand, is set in a dilapidated and understaffed hospital. A crew of incompetent personnel face inexperience and lack of supplies that cause a neglect of patient care. After the accidental death of a patient and a cover-up of its particulars, they must then face a patient who is literally dissolving with an unknown infection. Needless to say, the infection soon starts to spread--and the staff ends up battling for survival. This is a fun, if not very believable, setup and the resultant film is notable for its hysterics as well as its horror. After a bit of a lark, though, the film tries for a double-twist ending and a meaningful conclusion.

Ultimately, I enjoyed both films. "Premonition" boasts great lead performances, develops a believable chemistry between its stars, and follows through with an interesting ethical dilemma. "Infection" is loopier, more cheesy fun. A lot of people were put off by how unrealistic the hospital setting was--but I actually think this enhances the film. Neither film has a gore or real fright content, they are more about unseen and uncontrollable powers. And while "Premonition" flows to a somewhat logical conclusion, "Infection" seems not to know when to end. It has two different logical conclusions, but passes both of them up for one that is less effective--in my opinion. Anyway, you know if you like this sort of thing or not--either or both are worth checking out. "Premonition" is about 4 stars, while "Infection" is at 3 1/2 (although I found most of it crazy and fun!) KGHarris, 01/07.

5 out of 5 stars Slow horror drama.......2006-12-01

I loved this movie once I watched it to the end. The setting and lighting is great and well filmed. As usual, there's a twist. Great story line and a good beginner J-horror film for the nube.

3 out of 5 stars Confusing but not Horrible.......2006-10-09

Like many who watch this movie, I was lost at some scenes and didn't understand others, but that didn't stop from enjoying this movie. There wasn't that much gore to it. Every chance they had to show something, they would pan away or show the actor's reaction to the scene rather than show what it was they were looking at. It is a movie that you really have to pay attention to to understand what plot. It is indeed a good premise, but the lack of special effects and very parts of the movie hurt it. Personally, I didn't think this movie was scary and it never creeped me out, but overall it was still a decent watch. So, if you like J-horror, you can rent it but good luck fully understanding the end of the movie

4 out of 5 stars Hospital Horror.......2006-10-06

Hospitals are inherently spooky. Scenes of so much pain and death, the very walls soaking up the agony through the years, they can slowly affect the minds and souls of those that work there. The hospital in "Infection" ("Kansen") is in particularly bad shape. Losing money, unable to keep staff, the doctors and nurses working there are under-qualified and desperate. Into this unstable environment comes a strange patient, with a black, infectious rash. Slowly, the rash spreads, revealing a terrifying disease that liquidates the insides of a human's body, slowly driving the staff insane with fear and anticipation. But all is not as it seems, even then.

I'm impressed that, even watching as much J-Horror as I do, "Infection" still managed to creep me out. It was unexpectedly good. Director Masayuki Ochiai knows the things in a hospital that can make you cringe, and he uses them to their fullest extent. He also keeps you guessing as to exactly what kind of horror movie this is. Is it about a devastating biological infection? Are those ghosts? Is that a serial killer? All of his images and slow revelations of the story keep making less and less sense, disorientating you just when you think you have a handle on it, until the final page is revealed and it all comes crashing home.

"Infection" isn't quite a gross-out flick, like "Ichi the Killer," but it definitely relies on visual shock for its scares while keeping a good atmosphere. If anything, it manages to combine the creepy mood of J-Horror ghost films like "Ring" while still delivering on cringe-worthy gore. One scene in particular had me going. When you see the movie, you will know what it was.

As part of the "J-Horror Theater" series, and directer by a relatively new-comer who's experience has mainly been doing horror TV shows, I didn't have high expectations for this film. I thought it would be a cheap job, done to cash in on the current J-Horror fad. I was wrong. It is quite a well made little horror flick, not outstanding or groundbreaking, but really excellent for what it is.
