What if you could stop your heart to simulate a temporary death, and then be revived so you could describe your near-death experience to others? The mysteries of life--and the afterlife--compel five medical students (Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin, Oliver Platt) to experiment with their own mortality, and what they discover has unsettling psychological implications. That's the intriguing premise of this neo-Gothic horror thriller, directed by Joel Schumacher (Batman & Robin) with his typical indulgence of vibrant colors and hyperactive, hallucinogenic style. The movie borders on silliness at times, and the near-death recollection of memories results in some repetitious scenes, but the dynamic young cast takes it all quite seriously, which is what keeps this gaudy thriller on the edge. The fascinating premise could have been made into a better film, but Schumacher's mainstream excess doesn't stop Flatliners from being slick, occasionally even provocative entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

Movies like this are not very plentiful in Hollywood these days. In a land where the best ideas they can come up with is remakes, sequels, and comic book characters... there's this film. I truely think this movie possesses what most don't these days...originality! Plus, it's so ahead of it's time in storyline which is a good thing. I have to say that I was extremely impressed with Keifer Sutherland, William Baldwin, Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts, and Oliver Platt. Even in their younger days they all make a terrific cast, and they all manage to pull this complex script off effortlessly. This movie is about a group of friends and medical students who are curious whether or not there is a such thing as "life after death" and if so "what's out there"? I think what makes this movie so interesting is that they actually go so far as to literally cause themselves to "flatline" deliberately to get these answers. Basically, it's suicide on their part they just have their friends around to keep track of what time they actually die, revive them before they are permanently brain damaged, or they actually stay dead altogether. I can't imagine killing myself on purpose, and then relying on my friends to "bring me back". Even the thought is just a little twisted, but in this case, twisted good..not bad!. However, what their good friend Nelson (who goes first might I add) doesn't let them in on is that he's brought back a nightmare from his past with him. I think the underlying message of this movie is about not only your past coming back to haunt you, but the closure and redemption you must seek in your past sins before your soul can truely be at ease. In my opinion, this is some of Kevin Bacon's best work with the exceptions of the sadistic reform school guard he played in Sleepers and the eccentric he played in Stir of Echoes. To wrap this up, my conclusion is, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with how good this movie is.

I just finished viewing FLATLINERS for, I think, the sixth or seventh time. It still affects me just as strongly as it did the first time I saw it in 1990 during its theatrical release. Kiefer Sutherland (now a large presence in 24), the luminous Julia Roberts (Oscar winner for ERIN BROCKOVICH, lest we forget), the always intense and interesting Kevin Bacon (see THE WOODSMAN for one of his best performances), William Baldwin (who was great in BACKDRAFT), and Oliver Platt (whom I still think made a wonderful Porthos in THE THREE MUSKETEERS and recently graced THE WEST WING with his presence) all serve Peter Filardi's script well, taking the story from intensity to terror to revelation. The direction of stylemaster Joel Schumacher drenches every scene with dreamlike colors, taking us to a world like our own, but unlike our own.

If you haven't seen the film, I won't spoil it for you. The basics are that a small group of young medical students are intent on discovering if there really is anything after death, and if so, what? Each has his or her own reasons for exploring, and the results of their researches are not what they expect. In fact, the results are terrifying. It's a very effective thriller.

But there is much more to FLATLINERS. The film is really about the choices we all make in life, the things we do, the people we help or hurt. It's about how everything and everyone in the universe is linked. If you look beyond the trappings of the thriller, FLATLINERS has much food for thought.

The DVD has no bonus features, which is a pity. Commentary by Schumacher and production designer Eugenio Zanetti, as well as thoughts from the cast and writer, would be lovely.

In any case, FLATLINERS works on many levels, and if you allow it, it may affect you very deeply.

Medical World Meets "Sixth Sense".......2007-01-10

This movie has all the components to make it a great night of entertainment. It has suspense, great casting and the question everyone wants answered, "what lies beyond the veil of death?"

Suspense comes in many forms in this film as four medical students played by, Julia Roberts, Keifer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon and Billy Baldwin, attempt to help their leader Sutherland, determine what, if anything, is beyond death. Each one brillant and each with their own set of skeletons enters the "dead zone" and is brought back by the team to relate their experience.

What lies in wait for each one is the sins of their lives and how they deal with their own experience on an individual basis. The thriller ride comes in the form of what each one "brings back" with them, and how they choose to handle their own set of circumstances.

This is nicely directed, set in dark tones to express the situation each one finds themselves in and is carried through with wonderful acting.

Great movie, strong cast and good storyline..this one does not disappoint.

NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE.......2006-11-10

FLATLINERS is a movie that should be better, but in spite of some flaws, the talented cast and the interesting premise make it worth a view.
Kiefer Sutherland stars as a young medical student who is so interested in what lies after death that he convinces a few of his friends to help him "kill himself" so he can experience the after death but he wants of course to come back and share his discoveries. After he achieves this, he comes back but brings someone from his past along with him, who is not too friendly, but he doesn't tell the others, so they all merrily let themselves be subjected and they each bring back their own personal demons with them.
The movie should have been a little shorter, the suspense element wanes and some of the plot resolutions are a little hokey. Julia Roberts is fine as the sole girl in the group, who brings back memories of her father who committed suicide; William Baldwin is the girl-crazy doc who finds all the girls he's secretly photographed while having sex ganging up on him; Kevin Bacon does a good job as the maverick student who returns with visions of the little black girl he tormented in grade school; and Oliver Platt who doesn't do the experiment is around for comic relief and he's good as always.
The movie tries to make statements about our choices in life, but it's too pat ending negates any power it may have had.
