Although it's not as bold as Oscar darling Chicago, The Phantom of the Opera continues the resuscitation of the movie musical with a faithful adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's blockbuster stage musical. Emmy Rossum glows in a breakout role as opera ingénue Christine Daae, and if phantom Gerard Butler isn't Rossum's match vocally, he does convey menace and sensuality in such numbers as "The Music of the Night." The most experienced musical theater veteran in the cast, romantic lead Patrick Wilson, sings sweetly but seems wooden. The biggest name in the cast, Minnie Driver, hams it up as diva Carlotta, and she's the only principal whose voice was dubbed (though she does sing the closing-credit number, "Learn to Be Lonely," which is also the only new song).

Director Joel Schumacher, no stranger to visual spectacle, seems to have found a good match in Lloyd Webber's larger-than-life vision of Gaston LeRoux's Gothic horror-romance. His weakness is cuing too many audience-reaction shots and showing too much of the lurking Phantom, but when he calms down and lets Rossum sings "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" alone in a silent graveyard, it's exquisite.

Those who consider the stage musical shallow and overblown probably won't have their minds changed by the movie, and devotees will forever rue that the movie took the better part of two decades to develop, which prevented the casting of original principals Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. Still, The Phantom of the Opera is a welcome exception to the long line of ill-conceived Broadway-to-movie travesties.

DVD Features
The special edition of The Phantom of the Opera has two major extras. "Behind the Mask: The Story of The Phantom of the Opera" is an hourlong documentary tracing the genesis of the stage show, with interviews of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, director Harold Prince, producer Cameron Macintosh, lyricists Richard Stilgoe and Charles Hart, choreographer Gillian Lynne, and others. Conspicuously absent are stars Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford. Both do appear in video clips, including Brightman performing with Colm Wilkinson at an early workshop, and Crawford is the subject of a casting segment. Other brief scenes from the show are represented by a 2001 production. The other major feature is the 45-minute making-of focusing on the movie, including casting and the selection of director Joel Schumacher Both are well-done productions by Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group.

The deleted scene is a new song written by Lloyd Webber and Charles Hart, "No One Would Listen," sung by the Phantom toward the end of the movie. It's a beautiful song that, along with Madame Giry's story, makes him a more sympathetic character. But because that bit of backstory already slowed down the ending, it was probably a good move to cut the song. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2007-06-30

This set is amazing! The only thing I wish that was different is that you could get all the non song parts too. Other than that, the songs are wonderful, the music is amazing, and I've learned all the words!

2 out of 5 stars Visually stunning but could have been much better.......2007-06-30

Although I have never seen the stage production, I do own a soundtrack of the original cast. I must say this pales in comparison. The two largest problems with this is that Emmy Rossum can sing but not act and Gerard Butler can act but not sing. Hardly a recipe for something wonderful. Rossum goes through the movie with two expressions, open-mouthed horror and open-mouthed awe. Butler, while he can keep pitch, does nothing close to justice to the incredible songs he has to sing. The actor of Raoul was fairly disappointing as well, not being what one would imagine a young dashing hero to be. The scene of him arriving on a white horse was especially cliched. It didn't help that the fight that follows was pretty unexciting.
That being said, it is a gorgeous looking movie. The sets and costumes are incredible and actually seeing what is happening does clarify some things on the soundtrack. I was let down by the masquerade ball however. Having everyone in black and white didn't make any sense, especially in contrast to the lyric's description of the ball itself. The Phantom in red could still have been stunning without the rest of the costumes being so drab.
All in all I was disappointed. They certainly could have picked better actors/singers to play the leads.

5 out of 5 stars Captivating movie.......2007-06-28

Talk about total obsession, I bought this a year ago and held on to it until I saw the play the other nite, I have to say this is a well made movie, Gerard Butler as the Phantom was absolutely the man for the movie, I cant imagine anybody else playing his part, I saw the clips from the original with Sarah and there's no comparison, Gerard was so powerful as an actor, the way he portrayed the part especially when he was trying to seduce Emmy, sooooooooo sexy, anyway, I give this movie a 5 star.

4 out of 5 stars Nice adaptation BUT some poor performances.......2007-06-23

PROS: For those of you that love the play, this is a great way to enjoy it from home. Emmy Rossum provides a great performance as a very credible Christine Daae.

CONS: It's hard to believe that there was no one better than Gerard Butler to play the Phantom. He just can't sing to save his life. Raoul is also very regrettable.

5 out of 5 stars Magical Enchantment!!!.......2007-06-20

I borrowed a copy "The Phantom of the Opera" (Widescreen Edition)May 3, 2005, 141 minutes Disc-One Set from a Friend and just finished viewing the DVD Tonight!!!! You will want to get the Special Edition, May 3, 2005, Two-Disc Set if you want to view the Special Features which includes Two Major Extras. "Behind the Mask: The Story of The Phantom of the Opera" is an hourlong documentary along with the other Major Extra a 45-minute Making-of the Movie along with some minor extras. I prefer the Special Edition Two-Disc Set over the One-Disc Set where the Special Features are omitted but has only the Theatrical Trailer!!

This 2005 Movie Directed by Joel Schumacher is simply a "Grand Opera Movie" worthy of a 5 Star Rating!!! So, Turn up the DVD Volume and Enjoy!!

If you appreciate the World of Arts and Music you will not be disappointed with Andrew Lloyd Webber's Score!!

Emmy Rossum(Christine)Stole the Show with her Acting and Heavenly Singing Performance!!
Gerard Butler(The Phantom) was the Handsome Phantom with a Good Voice that was Physically Fit allowing his character to be very active in the Movie Opera Play. Gerard's incredible performance of "Music of the Night" was Outstanding and better than Michael Crawford's Voice Bass Notes!!
Patrick Wilson(Raoul)Singing was Good and his Character played the Alleged BoyFriend that was to Rescue Christine from the Evil Phanton!! Supporting Actress Minnie Driver and Miranda Richardson had limited but Solid Roles!!!

The Movie was able to capture the Magical Live Opera Essence with A Wonderfully Lavished Colored Staged along with a complete supporting cast for this Movie Stage Musical!!

This Movie allows the viewer to feel the Musical Opera without actually being at your Local Opera House!!

Magical Enchantment begins in a 1919 Auction at the Paris Opera Populaire when the Populaire VICTORIAN Ceiling Light Fixture CHANDELIER that was damaged long time ago is prepared for lighting before Auction bidding starts where the auctioneer, porters and bidders are present with Two Mystery Bidders???

A Bright Flash of Light!!, like the "Rebirth of a Rising Phoenix from the Ashes" transports the Entire Audience back to the Past in 1870 when the Paris Opera was at its height of Magical Enchantment!!!

The Paris Opera Populaire actually Rises very Slowly and Mystical like a Phoenix before your very Human Eyes until the Magical Live Opera Essence of it's Beauty is fully Transformed and Alive!!!!!

Nothing will replace the Live version of "The Phantom of the Opera" coming to your city but it will be Definitely Easier to Live without until the Live Opera version of "The Phantom of Opera" Arrives!!

If music be the food of love, then Under the Desert Sky is an Italian feast. Andrea Bocelli performs live at the Lake Las Vegas resort for this DVD and bonus CD, featuring some of the world's greatest love songs. In straying from the largely classical repertoire that helped shoot Bocelli to stardom, he is able to take more contemporary material and give it the sheen of timelessness. Most of the selections are in Italian, Spanish, or French--Romance languages, naturally. Highlights include the swoon-inducing "Amapole," the pitch-perfect "Canzoni Stonate," and even a reverent "Can't Help Falling in Love." Through it all, Bocelli's relaxed, self-effacing manner and confident delivery make for an intimate concert experience. Bocelli is also backed by a terrific group of talented musicians, including pianist and executive producer David Foster. A real show-stopper: Bocelli's duet with the Tony-winning Aida singer Heather Headley; the blending of their voices suggests the duets of Aaron Neville and Linda Ronstadt at their most sublime. There's only one real clunker: "Besame Mucho," which is so innately cheeseball that trying to deliver it sincerely only makes it more cheesy. Included is a CD with nine tracks, including a different version of "Can't Help Falling in Love," with a duet by American Idol's Katherine McPhee, and a soulful "Canzoni Stonate" with Stevie Wonder. DVD extras include interviews with Bocelli, Foster, and others (be sure to turn on your subtitles manually if you're not an Italian speaker). That's amore! --A.T. Hurley

Description

Performed on a specially constructed floating stage in Lake Las Vegas, a resort community 20 miles south of Las Vegas, this historic performance captures Andrea Bocelli's first ever pop concert. Under the Desert Sky, which co-stars Tony® winner Heather Headley (Elton John's Aida), represents a new era for the Tuscan-born singer. Spanish guitars flourish, traditional Latin percussion seductively keeps the tempo, accordions and harmonicas provide haunting ambience. Highlights include "Somos Novios" - Perry Como had a hit with it as "It's Impossible" - and "The Prayer," a duet with Heather Headley, David Foster and Carole Bayer Sager's Oscar® nominated song from Quest for Camelot. Capping the program is a new song, "Because We Believe," by David Foster with lyrics by Andrea Bocelli and Amy Foster Gillies which was written for and introduced at the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics.

"Size of package does not indicate quality within," Honolulu's finest, Charlie Chan sagely observes in Charlie Chan at the Circus, and while this boxed set contains only four films, it does this venerable franchise justice, with some of Chan's most arresting cinematic outings. All four films star Swedish-born Warner Oland, who is to Charlie Chan what Sean Connery is to James Bond. The high note of this set is Charlie Chan at the Opera, in which the curtain comes down on two opera singers during a performance. Boris Karloff (whose frightening presence accounts for a very funny reference to Frankenstein) costars as an amnesiac who escapes from a sanitarium to haunt the theatre like some phantom of the... well, you know. William Demarest steals his scenes as a cop in dire need of sensitivity training. He refers to Chan as "Chop Suey" and "Egg Fu Young," and when No. 1 son (Keye Luke) gives his dad a note, he asks if it's a laundry ticket. In Charlie Chan at the Circus, a Chan family excursion (with all 12 children!) to the Big Top is interrupted when the nasty circus owner is murdered.

Charlie Chan at the Olympics is another gold-medal outing that finds Chan embroiled in international espionage when an experimental automatic pilot device is stolen. His investigation leads him to the Berlin Olympics (via the Hindenburg), where his son is on the track team. Newsreel footage of the games integrated into the film features Jesse Owens running the 400-meter relay. Less of a sure bet but still an efficient mystery is Charlie Chan at the Race Track. Each restored film looks great, and each is enhanced with featurettes that illuminate interesting aspects of the series. One profiles prolific Chan director H. Bruce "Lucky" Humberstone (who, we learn, fortified his star with drink), and another Keye Luke. "Charlie Chan at the Movies" examines these films' places in the Chan canon. There are certainly enough 1930s cultural and racial stereotypes (John Allen as stableboy "Streamline" Jones in Race Track) here to keep the PC police working overtime, but for Charlie Chan buffs and B-movie fans, this is an essential collection that is, to quote Chan, a "chip off ancient block." --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars Number One Charlie Chan.......2007-05-13

I bought this for my husband who loves the old Charlie Chan series. I ended up watching them myself. The restoration of these old black and white classics is amazing. Warner Oland was Charlie Chan. I went back and bought volume 1. I am hoping that there will be a volume 3 since Oland did 15 Charlie Chan movies before he died in 1938.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF THE TWO VOLUMES OF CHAN BY OLAND.......2007-04-23

Both sets have been reviewed many times so I am making mine short and to the point. Vol. I and II are both thematic (I. deals with places--famous world cities) and II (the best) involves events. The best two entries are "At the Circus" that shows Chan for the first time with his large family of 12 (it grew to 14 later on in the series) and deals with the murder of the very unpopular circus owner. "CC At The Olympics" is an amazing piece of work. #1 son (the great Keye Luke) is a contender at the Nazi occupied Berlin Olympics. This premise on it's own (even with it's great subplot) makes this one of best in the Oland series.

None of the Chan Francishe films ran more than an hour (70 minutes top), so both sets containing 4 discs are quite expensive (although Fox is reputed to have spent $2,000,000 in restoration). To round out the set is the Sidney Toler WWII outings released by MGM--CHANTOLOGY (which is far to cautious due to the times--and the series had moved to B studio Monogram).

If you are a REAL fan, then all three pricey sets are worth the investment. I have tried to buy them used at a lesser price. BEWARE! Once you start watching the series (and unfortunately many of the finer outings have lost their copyright and only available on poorly made homemade bootleg DVD-Rs), you will get hooked on the most famous Oriental detective (based on a real life Honolulu detective) of all time, the amazing Charlie Chan.

A great series and the best of the genre.

Product Description

Get ready for laughs the size of Texas when Olivia Newton-John, Beau Bridges, Bonnie Bedelia and Delta Burke lead an all-star cast in this twisted, white-trash tale "that puts the 'fun' in 'dysfunctional'" (Toronto Sun). The hilariously sordid details about a southern family surface with a vengeance when relatives converge for the funeral of "Grandma Peggy," who died after tripping over her lover's wooden legs! Toss in a couple of feuding, big-haired daughters, a jumpy aunt who just quit smoking, the scorned neighbor from hell, and crazy, cross-dressing "Brother Boy" - and you've got an outrageous "train wreck you can't help but watch!" If you've got a taste for big hair, broad Texas accents, and gay rights, this mixture of white-trash comedy and coming-out melodrama is for you. Sordid Lives starts out as chicken-fried farce, as a funeral is prepared for a woman who died when she tripped over her adulterous lover's wooden legs; about midway the emphasis shifts to a drag queen unfairly held in a mental institution and the dead woman's grandson, an actor in Los Angeles who hasn't come out to his mother. The tone shifts wildly, and the humor depends on your fondness for the white-trash genre--if you like it, this will tickle your ribs; if you don't, it'll fall flat as the panhandle landscape. But it must be said that the cast (including Bonnie Bedelia, Beau Bridges, Delta Burke, and Olivia Newton-John) dives right in, no matter how over-the-top their characters get. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Sordid Lives-A true Story or fiction?.......2007-07-06

This movie is hilarious, and embarrassingly, epitomitses the south, or Bible belt. As many reviewers have said before, if you have ever lived in the south, you will almost certainly see parts of your life in it, or can relate to it. It can be a learning tool for people uncomfortable with homosexuality because it also has good, helpful ideas in dealing with that subject and others.

5 out of 5 stars Don't answer that...just think about it!.......2007-05-29

We have watched this movie about nine times in the month that we have had it. The performances are great, especially Bonnie Bodelia's portrait of a mother in denial. It makes us laugh and cry every time. What more can you want for in a movie? Don't answer that...just think about it.

5 out of 5 stars Rolling in the Aisle.......2007-04-11

A true classic belly laugh. There are so many good laughs in the flim, when I saw it in a theater in Palm Springs I literally fell from my seat and into the aisles gasping for breath. The big name stars are not the film's best assests. Screenplay and secondary characters carry this film throughout. See this one several times and you'll find a new laugh each time.

4 out of 5 stars Sordid Lives.......2007-04-06

Funny, funny, funny. If you're from the South you'll have an example of each character in your life. Hilarious!

Wow this movie was almost as funny as the Bird Cage!! Me and my friends still laugh about this movie as we recite lines from the characters.

Product Description

New York writer and opera addict Allegra (Elizabeth Reaser, The Family Stone) loves her girlfriend Samantha (Julianne Nicholson, Kinsey), but can t commit. When Samantha leaves her, Allegra rebounds with handsome philosophy professor Phillip (Justin Kirk, Angels in America) as well as the irresistibly beautiful, recently single Grace (Gretchen Mol, The Notorious Bettie Page). Allegra juggles secret relationships with both of them, never suspecting that Philip and Grace have a connection of their own. With a sophisticated blend of humor and irony, this screwball sex comedy twists and turns with all the drama of classic Puccini. Directed by Maria Maggenti (The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love), PUCCINI FOR BEGINNERS was an Official Selection in the Sundance Film Festival 2006.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars What if a lesbian was to not only date a guy but also his ex-girlfiend?.......2007-07-05

Allegra (Elizabeth Reaser, "The Family Stone" but probably more recognizable as "Jane Doe" from last season of "Grey's Anatomy") has commitment issues, which explains why her girlfriend, Samantha (Julianne Nicholson, "Little Black Book"), has dumped her. However, she ends up questioning both her sexuality and her sanity when she falls for Philip (Justin Kirk, "Weeds"). Yes, he is a man, but he is a college professor capable of engaging in verbal sparring and he actually likes opera. If that were not enough complication in her life, Allegra, begins a relationship with another woman, Grace (Gretchen Mol, "The Notorious Bettie Page"), who has just broken up with her boyfriends of six years and never been with a woman before. But, wait, there is more. Grace's ex-boyfriend is Philip and as the "Prologue" of this 2006 film makes clear, yes, everything is going to hit the fan for Allegra in a big way.

Actually, there is not a lot of Puccini in "Puccini for Beginners," although some of the characters go to a production of "Turandot" at the beginning. Philip takes Allegra to see "Don Giovanni," but that is Mozart. In one of the deleted scenes the violinist on the street near the end was playing "Nessun dorma," but that got gut at the end. But then in the trailer the opera music is from "La Donna e Mobile" from "Rigoletto," which is written by Verdi (I do not really think the aria's rant about the fickleness of women really fits the character, but the music is recognizable), which only goes to prove that you do not need to know a lot about Puccini to appreciate this screwball comedy. To the extent that "Turandot" is an apt metaphor for what takes place (the way Richard Gere takes Julia Roberts to see "La Traviata" in "Pretty Woman"), Allegra tells you all you need to know when she says the opera is about having to pass a test for the sake of love, with dire consequences if you fail.

Yes, "Allegra" is the brand name of an antihistamine drug, the name of the heiress to the fashion house Versace, and the name of the illegitimate daughter of Lord Byron and Claire Clairmont (Mary Shelley's step-sister), but it is also an Italian name for a female meaning "gay" or "happy." Such meanings have meaning for this movie because by thinking she is not the former our heroine may be ruining her chances to be the latter. The name is also related to the musical tempo "allegro," which means "quick and lively" or, literally, "cheerful." That would also provide an ironic encapsulation of our heroine who has to be quick to juggle the two relationships, but does not have the time to be all that cheerful.

Many viewers will be reminded more of Woody Allen movies that Puccini operas anyway, especially "Annie Hall," what with the New York City location, the use of comic subtitles, strangers getting involved in commenting on the proceedings, and the idea that Allegra is not as smart as she thinks. Fortunately, Reaser is not channeling Allen and her restrained performance keeps this one grounded as the complex situation drives towards its inevitable and painful collapse. There are just a pair of deleted scenes and the original theatrical trailer included in the DVD extras, but the commentary track with director Maria Maggenti ("The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love") and editor Susan Graef does an above average job of focusing on how the film was made in terms of cutting, rewriting, and all the thousand natural decisions that making a film is heir to, especially when you only shoot for 18 days and have 8 weeks to edit Final Note: I would not think of "Holiday" as being a screwball comedy, certainly not in the same league as "Bringing Up Baby," and if you were going to reference a Katharine Hepburn film in this movie I would think "Sylvia Scarlett" is the (perhaps too) obvious choice.

--David Horiuchi

Description

Musical Drama based on Andrew Lloyd Webber's celebrated musical phenomenon. The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a disfigured musical genius (Gerard Butler) who haunts the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera, waging a reign of terror over its occupants. When he falls fatally in love with the lovely Christine (Emmy Rossum), the Phantom devotes himself to creating a new star for the Opera, exerting a strange sense of control over the young soprano as he nurtures her extraordinary talents.

5 out of 5 stars At Last.......2006-11-13

A terrific DVD of a 1969 TV WGBH broadcast which features a nearly unsurpassable cast, led by two sopranos who, at the time, apparently hadn't survived Rudolf Bing's test for admission to the Met. Claire Watson's singing is radiant; the tones soar into and benefit from the glorious acoustics of Symphony Hall in Boston - what a sadly underrecorded artist (and under-appreciated in her own country) who died, tragically young. Sills as Zerbinetta not only satisfies every technical requirement with ease, but also clearly enjoys what she's doing and almost makes it sound easy. The relatively staid BSO audience's applause following her big scene would be an ovation, were the performance given today. The rest of the cast (Robert Nagy, John Reardon, Benita Valente, Carole Bogard, etc) sound great and show themselves as committed artists in the best sense of the phrase. The BSO and Leinsdorf follow suit. There are those who try to put down Leinsdorf's work- I'd like to see them better it themselves. Picture quality and sound are just fine. a tremendous document of an historic achievement.

5 out of 5 stars Ariadne auf Naxos a Treasure.......2006-08-28

This is a recording of a studio performance of Ariadne auf Naxos in concert - not a fully staged opera. This format worked fine for me because this 40 year old version boasts a superb cast that would be hard to equal today. Beverly Sills' spectacular coloratura singing the role of Zerbinetta represents the great American diva at her peak and a performance that should prove a real peak to any opera fan who hears it.

5 out of 5 stars "Bubbles" sings so well!.......2006-08-14

First, I should remind you that this is a concert performance from almost 40 years ago, rather than a fully staged opera.

The singing here is remarkable. Claire Watson gives Ariadne a strong, confident voice. Beverly Sills sings Zerbinetta with an easy, ebullient grace that teaches us why she acquired the nickname, "Bubbles."

If you're already familiar with Ariadne, this "Original 1912 Version" provides dialog that was left out (especially for Zerbinetta) in later versions.

If you are looking for a staged opera performance, you would do better to start with Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle and the Met, or Susan Anthony and the Dresden State Opera--both of these are excellent staged performances.

If you're already hooked on Strauss, and are just looking to see how Beverly Sills sings Zerbinetta, then this will be exciting for you. I just didn't want anyone to be disappointed if they were expecting the staged version.

5 out of 5 stars A remarkable DVD that transcends it's limitations.......2006-06-14

This is the original version of the Strauss-Hofmannsthal combination of a 2 act Moliere play: Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme (translated by Hofmannsthal with incidental music by Strauss) and a miniature 1 act opera seria, as it was first performed in Stuttgart 25 October 1912. It is only the opera that is performed here. Because it was poorly received, it was recast as a prologue followed by a revamped opera. The changes included reducing Zerbinetta's fiendishly difficult coloratura fireworks (which included a number of high F's) and a strategic key change from E to a slightly easier D. The original role of Zerbinetta was considered well-nigh unsingable and the entire evening with its play-opera configuration much too long. It is the revised Ariadne that has entered the repertory.

The entire cast is excellent, especially Claire Watson as Ariadne. But this performance unquestionably belongs to Beverly Sills who offers a stunning performance as Zerbinetta. This is a youthful, effervescent Sills with an utterly amazing coloratura captured at it's very peak. She attacks those high F's with confidence and ease (only pushing her voice to a slight shrillness one time, that I could hear). Her voice is lovely, girlishly lyrical, buttery soft yet sharply penetrating in it's power when necessary. Frankly, I'd forgotten how magnificent a coloratura Sills once was. This DVD is a revelation. The 1950's and 60's truly were a Bel Canto golden age.

Erich Leinsdorf does a good job conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra in this staged performance originally telecast on Boston's WGBH on January 7, 1969. The DVD is filmed in color with a digitally remastered picture. The picture is clear with barely any evidence of age. It is shot full screen with a 4:3 format. The region code is 0 all regions. The sound is Dolby Digital 2.0 mono. It sounds splendid; the voices are immediate and clear with a nice presence. If your A-V receiver allows you the option of widening the sound stage, do so and you will be amply rewarded. Subtitles are available in English, French, German, and Italian. There are no extras. A small booklet provides background information. The DVD runs 93 minutes.

This is a remarkable DVD that records a superb performance, especially by Beverly Sills. Whatever age related limitations in sound and picture there are in evidence are transcended by the greatness that is recorded. An important video is at long last available to be savored anew. Most highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A MUSICAL TREASURE FINALLY UNBURIED.......2006-05-23

I remember seeing this on Public Television when regular telecasts of opera and concerts really meant something to the public, and the Boston Symphony's concerts were regularly telecast. Strauss' original Ariadne (minus the Prologue, with many musical changes and a longer and more difficult version of the Zerbinetta aria) had rarely been heard, and it was fortunate that it was recorded for posterity. For years pirate videos and audio tapes and records in adequate to horrible quality have been circulating. There was even an abortive attempt to include the Zerbinetta aria in a recent compilation of Beverly Sills' recordings. One can only hope the VAI DVD will be of improved video quality and sound.

Suffice it to say that this is a remarkable performance. The very distinctive American cast represents some of the best singing of that time. Sadly Claire Watson, John Reardon and Maestro Leinsdorf are no longer with us - their work is distinctive and remarkable. The supporting cast includes Carole Bogard and Benita Valente, singers who would become important soloists. As for Beverly Sills' Zerbinetta, it is in a class of its own, capturing the singer at her prime and vocally flawless. True this is a concert performance without the trappings of sets and costumes, but with such astonishing music-making, the need for them is hardly noticeable. I can't wait to see this again!

Sparks fly in this video of the all-star concert from Berlin's equivalent of the Hollywood Bowl in July 2006, part of the World Cup festivities. The electricity is generated by the all-star trio of tenors Placido Domingo and Rolando Villazon and soprano Anna Netrebko in a program of operatic and vocal favorites. The crowd estimated at 20,000 eats it all up, and so will home viewers who'll relish the prospect of great singers performing great music.

Domingo is his usual self, still remarkable at an age when most tenors have called it quits. He sings with intensity and a voice undimmed by the passing of time. Domingo's duets with his partners are notable for his acute phrasing, the highlights being the first-act love duet from Verdi's Otello with Netrebko's gorgeous lyric Desdemona and the ravishing duet with Villazon from Bizet's The Pearlfishers, in which he takes on the baritone role. Netrebko seems slightly stiff at first but loosens up as the evening progresses, but she's in excellent voice, with luminous pianissimos most sopranos wish they could emulate. Her Puccini arias are beautifully sung, and she even offers a Franz Lehar aria and a charmingly accented duet, "Tonight," from West Side Story with Villazon. But if anyone can be said to steal the show it's Villazon, a singer in perpetual motion, who brings the house down with a version of Rossini's La Danza full of dash and brio. There's a lot more, from Spanish songs to arrangements of the Brindisi from La traviata and Lehar's Expert accompaniments are by the Orchestra of the Deutschen Opera of Berlin under the baton of conductor Marco Armiliato, who also offers several well-shaped operatic overtures and intermezzos and joins in the fun during the unbuttoned encores. Too bad the video direction doesn't match the on-stage proceedings. The production team apparently suffers from camera nervosa, the cameras swooping above the scene, then to floor level, now up, now down, now in close-up, now in long shot, searching for novelty while distracting from the music. There are also misjudged cuts, jumps, and angles. This hyperactivity doesn't seriously mar enjoyment but it is a blemish on a terrific concert. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!.......2007-06-26

Without getting too wordy at the expense of leaving something out, let me just say that this concert is an absolute delight. Domingo, Netrebko and Villazon complement one another perfectly - a great matchup of stars who also receive very strong backing by the Orchester der Deutschen Oper Berlin under the baton of Marco Armiliato. If you watch this on a home theater system as opposed to not being able to watch it live, the DTS surround really adds to the impact of these performances, not to mention the excitement that stirs up the audience throughout. Very highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Magic.......2007-06-13

Once in a while, everything works. This is a magnificent success, for all three artists. My thought when it began was that this event would be the passing of the torch from Domingo to Villazon, the best of the the recent tenors to today's best, with today's best soprano thrown in for good measure. In part,it is that. But in the whole, it is much more. Domingo started slowly, but by the end of things, he had shed 3 decades and a little coarseness- everybody on the stage was in their 30's and madly in love with life. These are three colleagues, consumed with music and the need to share it, and brought to new heights by each other's art and spirit. It was thrilling to see the audience brought deeper into the magic of the moment with each new aria, duet, and, finally, with the two encore trios- they were swaying, dreaming, and realizing that they were now part of this magic, and part of a night that they would always remember.
At the end, the two tenors were playfully vying for the beautiful soprano, but it never seemed cliched or sexist, even when Placido went so far as to pinch her chin. The feminist wars of the proceeding generations are over. Anna Netrebko had nothing to prove. There was no question, in her mind or in ours, that she was sharing the stage with her equals, effortlessly and joyfully, displaying a power and confidence the match of any I have seen before, male or female.
However, to me, the revelation of the night was Rolando Villazon. I saw him for the first time live in the Los Angeles production of La Traviata last September, where he stole the show from Rene Fleming, and convinced me that he is the best tenor around. But he is more than that. He has the potential to be, if he isn't already, the best tenor since Edison's invention of the phonograph. Just as Callas melded music and drama last century, the public will be not be able to accept a singer who is careless or incomplete in his art, or lacking in passion, after they have experienced this young tenor.
I could go on, but I will close by commenting on only one number that he sang so successfully that it was brought it to a new level: Rosini's "La Danza". He sang it with the exuberance and abandon of the young Mario Lanza, the intelligence and finesse of the great Jussi Bjoerling, and a musicality and personality so complete- so much his own in style and intensity, that he left all of the dozens of past performances I have heard of this old warhorse trailing in his dust. I feel as if I have never really heard "La Danza" before this incredible performance, done with a naturalness that both enchants and draws you in. From the sound of the audience, I am not the only one who was enchanted.

5 out of 5 stars Soprano wanted for theft!.......2007-05-25

"The Berlin Concert" with Domingo, Netrebko and Villazon features singing in five languages - Italian, French, German, Spanish and English - and a nice mix of orchestral and vocal music. The low point of this DVD is Domingo's appearance: he looks like Sadam Hussein's twin brother. The terrific high point is the set of individual and ensemble encores. Here opera fans get to see a soprano steal the show from TWO tenors! What's not to like about that?

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Opera.......2007-06-27

The sets are magnificent -- saw it at the Met and now i have it preserved for me to see over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars A great production of this superb Puccini opera.......2007-06-14

It's hard to imagine a better production of this great Puccini opera.

The Zefferilli stage production and set designs are excellent.
Domingo is in ringing voice as Calaf and his supporting cast including Eva Marton as the Princess and Leona Mitchell as the slave girl Liu are all very good.

James Levine and the Met Orchestra are in superb form - drawing all the drama and exoticism out of this dynamic score.

Sound and picture quality are all very good - especially given this is a filmed stage production.

Lovers of this opera will not be disappointed and it may even make a few converts to Puccini who dislike the "morbidezza" of his other operas.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!.......2007-04-25

First of all, this is an amazing Opera and the cast is incredible as well. This Met production is beautiful as well!!! I have nothing else to say about this version; I definitely recommend it!!!

Gorgeous scenery and gorgeous voices and james levine conducting. how can you not love this?

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinarily Exciting.......2007-02-13

I watch a lot of opera on DVD, and there's usually some element of each performance that doesn't quite match the others. Perhaps it's a singer who isn't on par with his or her cast members, or -- more likely these days -- the design and/or directorial "concept" is anachronistic and distracting. But there's absolutely nothing -- and I mean nothing -- that doesn't work about this Met "Turandot." One can quibble perhaps with the scope of Zeffirelli's production, but for once his obsession with size pays off. This is an Asian fairytale, and the design is appropriately fantastical. (I actually recommend that, if you get the chance, you see this production in the house, as it has to be experienced live to be believed.) And the VOICES!! I was leery about Marton and Mitchell, as I haven't always loved their work in the past; but they're brilliant. As is Mr. Domingo, whom I've always loved. To be honest, "Nessun Dorma" doesn't quite explode the way it should, but I've rarely heard him in better voice. All in all, I cannot imagine a better "Turandot" on DVD.
