5 out of 5 stars haven't seen the movies, but LOVE the TV show.......2006-12-09

While I haven't seen the movie/ this DVD, I have seen the TV show and absolutely LOVE IT. It's put out by Sesame Workshop, the makes of Sesame Street (duh) and from time to time the PBS show will have a cameo appearance of the belove Sesame Street characters. The main story line is that a family of lions operates a library, so most everything that happens surrounds the concept of learning how to read and great books and stories.

The PBS shows embodies the best of "Sesame Street" and "Reading Rainbow." It teaches a reading concept, like the sounds of some letters put together, has catchy songs, and has a story that uses that speical sound a lot. A lot of adult celebrities come on the show briefly too, like Kelly Ripa, Bruno Kirby, Al Roker, Melissa Etheridge, Meridith Viera and more...

My favorite segment of the TV show is "Cliff Hanger", a story about a guy names "Cliff Hanger" who is actually hanging on a cliff. He tries to get off the cliff, using a word/phrase from the highlighted sound of the day, but einevitably ends of right where he started from.

CUTE, CUTE, CUTE! Until today I didn't even know they had this on DVD... it's a MUST BUY!

4 out of 5 stars Phantom Of The Dreamland Theatre..........2007-06-27

A group of film students decide to host a horror-movie fiesta at a local abandoned theatre called the Dreamland. Their hope is to raise money for their projects by showing the movies complete w/ the orchestrated gimmicks that made them famous (such as a giant mosquito on a wire over the audience, electrically charged seats, etc.). The movies themselves are excellent parodies of 50s / 60s sci-fi schlockers not unlike many in my own collection! All seems fine, until a mysterious killer begins knocking off students one by one, using the very gimmicks to cause the deaths! You see, a cult leader murdered his wife on the theatre's stage 15 years earlier, filming it for posterity. Now, it appears that he's back, using unique methods to enact his vengeance! POPCORN is as funny as it is scary and mysterious. Jill Schoelen (Stepfather, Chiller) is good as Maggie, Dee Wallace-Stone (Cujo, The Howling) is her mum, and Ray Walston gets a decent little cameo! Also watch for Malcolm Danare (Christine) and Freddie Simpson (The People Under The Stairs) as students! Watch this one as a double feature w/ DEMONS and you'll never want to go to a theatre again!...

5 out of 5 stars A hidden gem for horror movies.......2007-04-05

This was a great addition to my horror collection. I loved this movie because of the idea of a group of college students creating a "horror flick" of their own trying to raise money. I really liked the ideas that they used with old movies as "shock effects" for the audience to have a totally new presentation of the "old favorites". This was a very good thriller and it was also suspenseful to watch. I recommend this movie to all horror movie collectors and watchers. It is truely a hidden gem in the horror genre.

3 out of 5 stars Fun movie marred by an awful dvd presentation.......2007-01-17

I'm a fan of Alan Ormsby (Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things) and was excited to see this film which he wrote the screenplay for (under the name Tod Hackett.) It's an enjoyable film, with a fondness for the good old days of crazy B movies and William Castle-esque promotional gimmicks. It's a shame though that this disc from Elite is a horrible pan and scan version. The picture quality has all the clarity of an ex-rental vhs tape. This presentation is on par with the terrible job Artisan did on Fright Night Part 2. It would be nice if Anchor Bay or Blue Underground picked up Popcorn and came out with a remastered widescreeen dvd, but until then, this will have to do.

4 out of 5 stars Popcorn.......2007-01-15

Cult Horror movie, not to bad not full a lot of blood and gore. May be boring for someone who wants that kind of movie. I bought this as a gift.

3 out of 5 stars Decent.......2006-06-29

This is a pretty entertaining film (though probably not always for the reasons the creators had in mind), especially for fans of 80's and early 90's slasher-type films. The plot is fairly simple: a group of film students put on a "Horror, Sci-Fi, and Supernatural" film festival in an old theater to gain recognition and raise funds, and during the evening they are killed off one by one. It manages to keep the killer and motive a secret, while tricking viewers into thinking they know who it is right away. The actors are also notable horror b-listers. It features Jill Schoelen (The Stepfather, Curse II), Dee Wallace-Stone (The Howling, The Hills Have Eyes), and Kelly Jo Minter (The Lost Boys, A Nightmare on Elm St. V, The People Under The Stairs) to name a few. The films biggest problems are a few corny moments, and the killers motives aren't very strong for killing certain people he shouldn't have a grudge against.
If you're into movies like this, and have 9 bucks to blow give it a shot!

Chutney Popcorn takes up where quirky lesbian-themed comedy Go Fish left off. The twist? Reena (director Nisha Ganatra) is of Indian descent, but her girlfriend, Lisa (Law & Order's Jill Hennessy), is not. This isn't a problem in and of itself. Reena's mother, however, views her daughter's sexual orientation as a "disability" and describes Lisa as Reena's "college roommate." Then there's Reena's uptight sister, Sarita, who discovers she can't conceive and draws even further away from her sibling. When Reena offers to be a surrogate, things just get worse. Lisa flees for fear that a baby will ruin her relationship with Reena, while Sarita changes her mind--but it's too late: Reena is pregnant (via artificial insemination). There's a happy ending, of course, but fortunately it isn't too happy--you get the sense that Sarita still has a way to go before she can accept herself as fully as her unconventional, artistic sister. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE the Mother she is the funniest of all!.......2006-06-19

This movie is so funny that i believe it is enjoyable to both gay and straight audiences. I'm in the catagory of the straight audience and i loved it! The thing about this film that i like the most is how they show the lesbians lives and loves not being outrageous as they are shown in other films. It's more of a realistic view of any average couple out there today. I also like how the main focus is moved over to the baby issue. The funniest parts are when the indian traditions go amuck(especially the umbrella scene) This movie is sugar and spice, and everything nice, a little drama, comedy and lots of fun, Highly recomended!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Funny, beautiful, MUST-SEE........2005-11-18

There is a reason this film has won so many film festival awards. It's
really good. Really, really good.

"Chutney Popcorn" intertwines a beautiful, cute, and funny story with the
important issues of family homophobia, immigrant parents with Americanized
children, interracial, interfaith queer relationships, and surrogate
parenting, all while brilliantly portraying a dyke community of the
late-1990s. Really, it's an amazing story.

Reena (Nisha Ganatra, also director) is a young Indian dyke in love with
the charming and gorgeous Lisa (Jill Hennessy). Riding around on their
motorcycle and living and socializing with a fun group of dykes, Lisa and
Reena have a pretty fabulous relationship, aside from a few issues.
Reena's mother refuses to come to terms with her daughter's queer identity
(handled with some priceless humor) or her Americanization; Lisa's mother,
on the other hand, is an over-the-top-dyke-loving mother. Then, to make
matters a bit more confusing, and the film all-the-better, Reena begins
thinking about being a surrogate mother for her newly-wed sister. Not only
does Reena's mother hate the idea, but her girlfriend, Lisa, has trouble
figuring out why exactly she doesn't support the idea either.

Brilliantly taking on a story of clashing cultures (queer/straight,
Indian/American, young/old, various family members and ideals), "Chutney
Popcorn" is a funny, beautiful must-see. The acting is great, the
production superb, the issues immaculately poignant. Seriously, well-done.
Five stars.

1 out of 5 stars Corn with very little pop.......2005-04-24

This slow, cliche-ridden, hard to hear, badly acted and produced film wore me down pretty quickly, and I turned it off after about 45 minutes. The premise is that the girlfriend of a lesbian whose sister is infertile volunteers to be a surrogate mother. But after 45 minutes we still hadn't gotten to the premise. Instead, we had barely audible scenes of the lesbian couple and their friends gossiping about irrelevancies, the lesbian star being oppressed by her traditional East Indian family for being a lesbian, and the sister pining and whining over not being able to make babies.

I'm a lesbian myself and always looking for realistic depictions of lesbian life in film, so I was interested in seeing this movie. I was also happy to see that it was made by and starred an Indian woman. So I was prepared to like "Chutney Popcorn" and was more than a little disappointed at its amateurish production values, bad writing and bad acting. The best I can say is that it is well-intentioned and addresses issues of concern to lesbians and women in general, although so poorly that it's just painful to watch.

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2005-03-17

What an amazing love to have a baby for your sister. This film is so funny, sad, sexy, and romantic. I made my mother watch it with me! The music is amazing, it really fits the mood. Henna tattoos really are amazing too. Go figure.

4 out of 5 stars ok.......2004-01-01

This is one of the better lesbian films. I must admit I have yet to see anything like it and I liked the fact that it dealt with other races and pregnancy options for lesbians.

The era of Drive-In Movie Theaters was a magical and unfortunately mostly bygone time. You drive in with your car and find a spot to watch the movie, hook up a big fray speaker to your car window, get comfortable with your loved one(s) and sit back and enjoy the show. And if you got hungry, you had a REAL snack bar, not these modern snack bars that charge outrageous prices for popcorn, candy and maybe ice cream or hot dogs. At a Drive-In, you could get an entire meal -pizzas, hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, etc. You name it and it was probably available at your local Drive-In snack stand. This short DVD is a collection of 56 intermission clips that were shown during this golden era of movie watching. It includes clips about how to use the speakers, sponsor ads for local businesses and of course food... lots and lots of food. So sit back and enjoy this walk down memory lane with your loved ones.

    5 out of 5 stars Popcorn Popper.......2007-04-02

One of the best dvds in the great "Between the Lions" series. My two year old grandson would like to play it everytime he comes over and enjoys each of the many segments. He clearly follows and often mimics the various ways the show reinforces vowel sounds ("The Vowelles" singing group), phonics and word identification. The relationships among the lion characters is also a strong role model for family communication, affection and love of reading.

In this video Jimmy tells all about soccer including rules, equipment, safety tips, and how to play the game. Plus the music is great. All will enjoy watching Jimmy Sport.

5 out of 5 stars iParenting Media Award Winner!!!.......2006-03-05

"iParenting Media Awards Reviewers" stated the following:

The interaction outside was especially appealing to my son. He was excited to actually see the kids run around outside. He's familiar with soccer balls and was excited to see them and learn more. I think this is a good, basic tool for teaching kids about soccer.

The positive characteristics of this DVD was that it used the character Jimmy Sport. The children became more interested once he appeared. I liked how the DVD shows how sports can be made fun.

This is a great DVD for kids who already have an interest in soccer and to spark an interest in those that don't. The setting, situations and dialogue seemed very believable. The addition of Jimmy Sport makes this different from most sport-related instructional videos. Teamwork is emphasized, as well as basic skills and exercise.

Robin Simmons comments are right on. However, I don't understand why he would give only *** to a movie he raves about.

      3 out of 5 stars Fun Flicks, So-So Documentary.......2003-01-03

This DVD set is a great collection of campy flicks, shorts, and trailers. You get a diverse serving of full length features from the pioneering days of exploitation films, from dope maniacs to pushers to premarital relations to nudists.

I was disappointed in the documentary on the roadshows. If you know absolutely nothing about the history of exploitation films and their distribution, you will learn a little something. Unfortunately, this documentary barely scratches the surface. You get a little narrative background on the nature of these films, followed by examples via clips from the films. Problem is, these "film clips" go on and on and on, where they could have illustrated the point with just a few quick snipets. This production needed tighter editing. Too bad, because this is a fascinating subject that has the potential to be a great documentary (KEN BURNS! Are you reading this?).

David Friedman, who is featured in the documentary, wrote a really good account of his years in the roadshow and B-Movie biz called "A Youth In Babylon." Would love to see a film feature somewhere along those lines!

If you have an interest in viewing the actual exploitation films
in their entirety, this is a good find. If you want a good historical background, pass this by and hope for a better documentary up the road!

3 out of 5 stars GRIND HOUSE GREATS.......2001-11-05

In the 30's and 40's, the exploitation film business was at its peak. Promoters and producers like the legendary David F. Friedman and Dan Sonney "bicycled" their prints from town to town across heartland America. With titles like, "Child Bride," "They Wear No Clothes," "She Shoulda Said No," "Strip Tease Girl," "Reefer Madness," "Dance Hall Racket," "Victims of Passion" "Tia Juana After Midnite," Flesh Merchant," and "A Virgin In Hollywood" they packed drive-ins in the sticks, small town main street theaters and skid row scratch houses for a week and moved on. The movies, made for the lowest possible price, had several things in common: a subject too controversial for main stream studios, a moral message that incorporated a lurid title with the highest possible titillation factor, cheap sets, bad acting and the willingness of the "actresses" to wear skimpy clothing or none at all.

"SEX AND BUTTERED POPCORN" (VCI Entertainment, ...) is a magnificent four disc, ten hour, set that mines this rich lode of exploitation films from six decades ago. "Sex and Buttered Popcorn" also the title of the stand alone disc..., is a terrific two hour plus documentary narrated by Ned Beatty with numerous film clips, lurid trailers and bonus shorts including a vintage Tempest Storm strip tease in color. Three additional discs, "Tease, Sleaze and Social Disease," "Sex, Sin and Salvation" and "Grandad's Forbidden Follies," each feature several full length classics of these accurately labeled sub genres and include ample bonus material, mostly vintage "nudie cuties" and wonderfully lurid exploitation poster art.

I had a lot of fun watching this wonderful collection of often hysterically funny, pseudo serious films on so called taboo subjects. Far more entertaining in fact than most DVD releases. However,"S&BPC" is also a fascinating look at this misunderstood fringe of the film industry. Writer director Sam Harrison, III, should consider doing a sequel on the earliest days of the somewhat darker territory of the Peep Show "loops" and the people who starred in and distributed them.

"Uncut! Uncensored! Unashamed!" proclaimed these Hollywood Roadshowmen. They sold sex and sin, sugar frosted with salvation, the latter making it permissible to cater to the forbidden and frowned-upon appetites of middle America. All across our heartland one and two nights of naughty titillation were offered as exposés and insights. SEX AND BUTTERED POPCORN is an affectionate peek at an era of American motion picture-making which had its roots in the tanbark and tinsel of the traveling carnival and which flourished from the twenties through the fifties. The Films: " Forbidden Daughters," " The Road to Ruin," " Hollywood Script Girl," " Maniac," "They Wear No Clothes!," The March of Crime," " Polygamy," "Child Bride," "Forbidden Desire," " She Shoulda' Said No," "Back to Nature," "Dance Hall Racket," "Strip Tease Girl" and, of course," Mom and Dad" are some of the titles shown. Most have not been seen since their original release. The Interviews: David F. Friedman and Dan Sonney, two surviving itinerant showmen who traded on the prurient interest of the masses, plus Mildred Babb, the widow of exploitation kingpin, Kroger Babb. Show Host: Ned Beatty, acclaimed Oscar and Emmy nominated actor. Bonus Features: Vintage Shorts: "Striptease Revealed" with Lili St. Cyr and Tempest Storm| "They Wear No Clothes" and a genuine "Square Up" Reel| Vintage Trailers: " Slaves in Bondage," "Youth Aflame," "Souls In Pawn,"| 3-Unit Show: "Hoodlum Girls," "Teenage Jungle," "Secrets of a Model"| Scene Selection. Specs: DVD9; Dolby Digital Mono; 155 minutes; Color & B/W; 1.33:1 Aspect Ratio; MPAA - R; Year - 1989; SRP - $9.99.

3 out of 5 stars Fun but not terribly informative.......2006-03-04

As a fan of exploitation films, I was excited to see this documentary. Unfortunately it is merely fun, without any clear thesis. Particularly annoying is the fact that the filmmakers don't identify the film clips, so that one who is unfamiliar with exploitation films would not be able to find any of the individual films that interested him or her. Also, more focus is put on nudity than is necessary; the effect is to "undersell" drug films, eugenics films, and white slavery films, among others. (Indeed, the documentary does have considerable nudity, although it's usually fairly innocuous.) A much, much better introduction to exploitation films is Eric Schaefer's book " 'Bold! Daring! Shocking! True!': A History of Exploitation Films, 1919-1959." Watch this documentary for fun; read that book for information.
