Following in the footsteps of The Ring cycle, the Ju-On series of horror films has taken Japan by the throat. According to this movie, the title refers to a curse placed upon a house where violence occurred. Sure enough, we see a string of unhappy encounters in a seemingly ordinary home, where ghosts have settled in the aftermath of murder. Director Takashi Shimizu (who also directed the Hollywood remake, The Grudge) constructs the picture out of separate fragments, not told in chronological order; the haunted house is the main character, not any one of the unsuspecting human characters. Cult mavens might suggest that Shimizu uses devices and images that have already worked well in films by Hideo Nakata and Kiyoshi Kurosawa--the Japanese horror film does have its conventions. But none of that matters if you're watching this movie alone at home on a dark night. Click, click, click.... --Robert Horton

*Meow* . . . Toshio? . . . Is that you? .......2007-02-15
American Horror cinema has been in hibernation for too many years (or am I alone in thinking this?!) . . . and while we await a resurgence in original American horror, we give thanks for Asian Horror (note the word "original" because I have little interest in seeing remakes of "Texas Chain Saw," "Black Christmas," and "Halloween" . . . ohhhh yeah, just in case you didn't know, Rob Zombie is remaking Carpenter's "Halloween." Grrreeeaaatt.)
But let's face it . . . Asian Horror accomplishes what American Horror rarely does (even the best of it) . . . it gives its audience "the creeps." It exploits every iota of the uncanny . . . leaving its audience a sweating, quivering wreck. Nonetheless, often times, you will find a delayed reaction to these films . . . you'll be driving home from work and instantly feel a cold shiver . . . "Toshio? Is that you?" Or worse, they appear in our nightmares . . . "Toshio? Is that you, again?" They work on a VERY deep, VERY subconscious level. Understand, there are rarely the "cheap thrills" that you find in American Horror, rarely the predictable scares . . . instead, the tension in these works builds to a skin-crawling crescendo. And Ju-On certainly is the quintessential example. (This film will show you why hiding under your covers is a VERY bad idea!!)
The approach to Ju-On is rather surprising. It is a series of interconnected vignettes (think "Pulp Fiction"). And while this is initially confusing (especially if you experienced the American remake), it is a valuable approach . . . so, be patient. And if you do not understand everything the first time through, that's perfectly normal;) Many people enjoy multiple watches . . . enjoy unraveling its layers of mystery!
Ju-On falls into the sub-genre of "Haunted House" . . . but not in the cheesy "Amityville Horror" way (which I actually love), but in a "Ummm, someone should burn down that house NOW" way. Trust me, you will never, EVER think of your attic in the same again!!
As a final note about this film, take time to listen to the audio commentary reel . . . it is Sam Raimi!! If anyone has ever given America genuinely original horror, it is Sam Raimi (and Romero, but I digress!!)
So, do not sit around waiting for the next great American horror film . . . I do not believe it is not coming anytime soon. Instead, watch Ju-On. And then watch Ringu, and Honogurai Mizu No Soko Kara (the original "Dark Water"), and Marebito, and Audition . . . you get the picture;)

Great but sometimes hard to follow.......2007-01-14
I personally loved Ju-on. This is the original movie that the american "Grudge" was based on. If you saw the american version it follows the original pretty well with a mix of america's sequal. It's in japanese and english dub. The only problem with this movie is that I can be hard to follow because you don't have a strict time line. You find yourself skipping around through characters and ultimately in a time warp. Sometimes you see what is happening now and in the past at the same time and you're not quite sure what is real. Other than that the movie is wonerful a suspense that is definately worth watching!
A Flawed But Worthy, And Occasionally Frightening, Dark Ghost Tale.......2007-01-10
Several years ago, two made-for-tv movies were released in Japan - "Ju-On: The Curse 1" and "Ju-On: The Curse 2". Extremely well received, they spawned the theatrical movie "Ju-On: The Grudge", constructed so that it could be viewed either as a remake or as a sequel to the two earlier efforts (with the two "Ju-On Curse" movies being the only Ju-Ons I've yet to see, I can only speculate as to how the connections go, but that's the story anyway). The theatrical movie would go on to spawn a Japanese sequel (with a third entry reportedly in the works), plus an American remake and its sequel (which is actually totally unconnected to the Japanese "Ju-On: The Grudge 2").
The basic premise, apparantly based on real legends from Japanese folklore, is this: when a person dies unnaturally, in the grips of powerful emotions like rage, they sometimes fail to pass on to the afterlife but instead become a 'Ju-On', a restless, violent spirit bent on havoc. Those who die at the hands of one of these Ju-Ons become new Ju-Ons themselves, and the curse spreads in this way. In this movie, a young Japanese health-care worker who makes rounds to different homes to care for the infirm, has as one of her patients an elderly woman who has recently moved with her family into a new home. Unfortunately for all, this home is inhabited by Ju-On spirits.
It's a great premise, with wonderfully bizarre visually imagery and some genuine frights, including the unearthly, absolutely creepy sounds that emanate from the Ju-On ghosts. Unfortunately, a lot of the movie doesn't make sense. It's not the Ju-Ons themselves - I love horror movies where a rational explanation for the supernatural phenomena is never uncovered; it often adds to the atmosphere of mystery, eerieness and fright. It also wasn't the unusual way the story was told, flashing through different time periods; it was a little bit hard to follow (perhaps more so than it should have been given the cryptic, attention-demanding nature of the few other movies that have used a non-linear story like this but remained fully comprehensible; perhaps it would have worked better if I'd gotten to see the two "Ju-On Curse" movies first) but it was innovative and allowed the film to follow some really unexpected paths. The parts that I just couldn't figure out involve the human characters.
For example, early in the movie the home health care worker is shocked to discover a strange, silent little boy locked up behind some boards in a room upstairs. She immediately rushes to the phone to report this, but (though the scene itself doesn't last this long) one gets the impression she leaves him alone up there for about twenty minutes while talking to the authorities on the phone, and then fretting about what to do next. Wouldn't any remotely rational person have tried not to leave the kid alone for any longer than absolutely essential, and try to talk to him and see if he's alright, try and get him to tell them who did this? There are a couple of other examples of this level of illogical behavior from different characters later in the movie (I don't want to get too specific there; I used the example I did because it happens so early in the movie) so it can't be attributed to one character just being overcome by shock and therefore acting in an unwise way - almost everybody seems to act in implausible ways. In the case of one example later in the movie, I've heard it suggested that it may be a cultural thing - that people in different parts of the world would react differently. I don't think I can fully accept that explanation - react differently to certain things, maybe, but everybody consistently reacting in ways to seem to defy all common sense and all credibility (the reactions of the characters in 1981's "Madman" look believable compared to some of the behaviors in here)? Besides, I've never found that problem of repeated implausibility in any other Japanese movies I've seen. Just using horror as an example, "Audition", "Infection" and "Ringu", to name a few, all made sense.
Credit where it's due: despite these flaws, the characters somehow stay interesting and even likable. It's just that these strengths could have been so much more effective without the contrasting flaws.
Production-wise, "Ju-On: The Grudge" looks and sounds beautiful, as is par for the course with most Japanese productions. The country's filmmakers as a whole seem to take the importance of things like lighting, cinematography, sound, etc., very seriously, and the results are impressive. The acting is high caliber, although again, I have to wonder how much more impressive it could have been if not for the character implausibilities.
Overall, the movie is still worth seeing for its own sake, but it's especially reccommended for one reason: it leads right into "Ju-On 2", which is a tremendous movie. And one probably should see this one first, even though it and the American remake are extremely close. "Ju-On: The Grudge" is a good movie in spite of its shortcomings, it's just not anywhere near the cream-of-the-crop in the rich field of Asian horror.
Ju-On the GREAT.......2007-01-04
I loved The Grudge...until I watched Ju-On! Now I am hooked on the Asian version...and the Asian counterparts of all English version films. After watching Ju-On, I decided to start watching all the other Asian versions of horror/thriller movies that I liked in English. The Asian versions are SO much better!
If you like The Grudge, do yourself a BIG favor and buy Ju-On. You will not be disappointed.
What scary used to be..........2006-11-14
I saw this movie a few years back and loved it. It truly had me spooked throughout the whole film. I played it for a few friends and family one winter night (aged 15 through 70) and everyone was jumping and screaming from start to finish. It was great fun for everyone and they still bring it up to this day. I lent my copy out and (unfortunately) never got it back. Now I am buying it for the second time (I recently purchased a projector and this one will be played outside on the wall of my house). I seriously recommend this one!

Takashi Shimizu's inexhaustible obsession with the Ju-on franchise finds a creepy outlet in Ju-on 2, which by most accounts is actually the fourth Japanese feature in the bunch. It returns to the style and structure that made Ju-on: The Grudge such an unnerving experience: the child demon with the blue face, the clicking/croaking that accompanies the appearances of the female ghost, the chockablock chronology that treats each haunting as a jigsaw piece to fit together into the whole. The plot follows an actress (Noriko Sakai), known as the "horror queen" of movies, as she deals with the repercussions of a car accident in which she loses her pregnancy. Or does she? Pregnant or not, the idea of going with a small film crew to the very haunted house where the unpleasantness of the original took place is probably not a healthy idea. Some of the scares still work just fine if you're watching this movie with the lights out, but the feeling of discovery, in the wake of the original Ju-on, the Ring films, and the Hollywood sequels, has definitely worn off by now. Thus the unshakable feeling that Shimizu is going through the paces with this one, rather than expanding on a pretty nifty original idea. --Robert Horton

Go along for the creepy ride...........2007-04-12
A lot of people tend to over analize the J-horror films and forget to let themselves be entertained. Just let yourself enjoy it and you will be creeped out.
It is a hard film to follow, and I think it's because it is subtitled, but it's just as satisfying as Juon 1. A scene I found particularly creepy was a guy is hung by the croaking hair of the lady ghost. What got me was his feet hitting the wall...tapping...it got under my skin!
Sometimes the horror does seem a fraction contrived and alittle over-the-top for the context of this movie, but it's still all good.
Anyways, just let yourself be entertained. The Juon series seems to be the better of the current J-horror on the market today.
What the hell happened?.......2007-04-12
The Grudge series is one that has been ongoing for quite some time now, beginning with an extremely low-budget and nearly plotless television miniseries known as "Ju-On: The Curse". It was a bizarre and creepy little concoction that was quite good and served as a protype or test run for what I consider to be the scariest ghost story ever told "Ju-On: The Grudge". That film ws mercilessly creepy and had me looking over my shoulder at the darkness surrounding me even as I watched it. It got under my skin like no film had in years and I loved it. The American remake was a promising idea, with the same director reprising his role, but it was awful. My wife, sister, and I literally laughed through the climax in the theater and ridiculed the film mercilessly all the way home. But when I saw a Japanese sequel was being released, I perked up, remembering the brilliance of the first film. Dear God, do I hate this movie. First and foremost, there is nothing scary about a haunted wig. I know that japanese filmmakers seem to think nothing in the world is as terrifying as cartoonishly long black hair, but I'm sure even they should know that the terror doesn't transfer to self-mobile wigs. And then there's the haunted bootyprint. You read that right, a wet bootyprint that is haunted. The notion that a filmmaker thought these device would be good is much scarier than the application of these devices ever could be. And then there's that horrible sequence where a soccer ball turns into little ghostboy Toshio's head and frightens a girl to literal death. The unintentionsl laughs keep on coming. Picture this: a woman is in a hospital, legs locked in stirups giving birth. You with me? The woman is pushing and the baby is on the way and suddenly the lights go out and the doctors hear the horrible strangled croak that means mama ghost is here. Can you guess where it is she emerges from? In horror films there is good disgusting and bad disgusting; there is nothing at all good about watching a fully grown corpse climb out of a woman's.....area. These scenes alone could kill any movie, but the bad keeps on coming. The overly convoluted out-of-sequence storytelling tries so hard to be as cool as "Pulp Fiction" and other such films but only succeeds if the goal was giving me a headache and proving that this is a storytelling device that should only be used by trained professionals. I watched the film again, hoping to sort out the details of what the hell I had just watched, hoping that there was a good film in there somewhere that I missed the first time and only got angrier that I had now wasted twice as much time on this hate-crime of a sequel to a horror classic. I cannot believe that the same man made both films. At this point, I'm throwing in the towel on what was once an extremely promising horror franchise. This hackjob may well be the deathnail in the already stagnating Asian horror genre; I think J-horror is on it's last legs and fright fans will have to start searching for fresh ideas elsewhere.
If You Enjoyed "Ju-On: The Grudge" . . ........2007-02-25
. . . then this film may be for you!
Like "Ju-On: The Grudge," "Ju-On 2" presents a series of interconnected vignettes. Though the non-linear presentation can sometimes confuse the viewer, it takes only a moment to realize the correlation between the last portrait and the next. So, be patient;)
This film has a bit of a postmodern spin (which many horror-film scholars may enjoy). One of the main characters, Kyoko Harase, plays an actress known as "The Queen of Horror." She is taken to the infamous Saeki home to give a television interview about her own experience as a horror actress. It is there that she is marked with the curse (in a fairly unpredictable way!!) And, there that true horror enters her own life.
To the joy of many viewers, Toshio figures prominently into "Ju-On 2." Though the make-up on Toshio is a little flat (unlike "Ju-On The Grudge") his acting is still pitch-perfect. Nonetheless, it is interesting to note that Yuya Ozeki (who play Toshio Saeki) did not understand the part he was playing in earlier films (simply as a result of his tender age). He has now refused to watch his own films and his parents go to the premieres alone:) (You can discover this information on the American version of "The Grudge" in Takashi Shimizu's commentary).
Some reviewers seem hyper-critical of this work. Yes, the film has some missteps, but they are easily overlooked. If you watched and enjoyed "Ju-On: The Grudge" then try "Ju-on 2" . . . you might be pleasantly surprised!
Better than what Americans can do but still not great.......2007-02-11
Recently I watched the Grudge 2 and I was not shocked by its lameness. The film simply was just not that scary but that's to be expected. But since video stores around here don't carry old ones anymore, it gets harder and harder to find a genuine horror movie, instead we're stuck with the tie-ins: the Ring comes out, we also got Ringu, now because of Grudge 2 on DVD, all we have left is Ju-On 2. Unlike most Japanese horror remakes that pretty much have the same plot as the original, this one completely has a separate story from the remake. Is it better than that? Of course. Is it a good horror movie? Well...
The plot weaves various characters centering around a house: when people walk into a particular house, it's said a curse is placed upon them and they either end up dead or missing. Kyoko is a horror queen actress who gets in an unusual car accident. She apparently lost her baby but turns out she didn't. Tomoka, a young journalist and Megumi, a hairstylist all find themselves terrorized by 2 ghosts, Toshio and Kayako.
Like many people, I'm getting disappointed with the so-called "horror" movies released lately. There seems to be an emphasis on disgusting gore to scare the audience. Problem is gore doesn't frighten so much as it disgusts and makes you squeamish. Asian horror however uses imagery and atmosphere to provide their scares and in many cases, such as the Eye, it can be quite effective. Other times it's just really dumb. Take this film for example where I kid you not, a scene is built entirely out of a wig. Yes that's right: a killer demonic wig and it's unintentionally funny. Also, a scene with swinging characters is funny, not only how they're hanging but what's causing their swinging.
Strangely though is that "cat boy" actually doesn't even do anything cat-like which is pretty strange considering his urge to meow all the time in the Grudge films. Then there's Kayako who still has her croaking sound which to me still isn't that scary. One thing the film does contain which was seen in the remakes was the Tarentino-esque idea of messing with time and having scenes weave in and out of each other. It fits some scenes but in some cases, including an extra's story, is that it's so disorganized and confusing that you feel like "ok that story happens before that one right?" and hope you're right. I like the characters better here though, maybe because they're more fleshed out than the Grudge 2's, or maybe it's because they're just cuter, who knows.
Some find it really scary, and others don't. For me, it's a film that done differently could've been quite chilling, here it brings about unintentional laughter. Oh man that wig...
Wonderful but freaky.......2007-01-14
Like the first Ju-on, this also takes place in Japan and centers around the cursed house and the effect it has on others. A famous actress finds out that she is pregnant but after a mysterious encounter with a cat and a little boy she finds that her baby may not be hers after all. The movie focuses on this woman and her tv/movie crew and what happens to them as a result of filming in the cursed house. This movie, like the other, warps time a bit but it keeps your interest. It also ends with a little twist. ;) I recommend it!

A great horror film.......2006-09-01
Hi. I own this movie and really love it. It is a very good watch. I watch it over and over and over and over and I like it even more. So why give it 4 stars if I like it so much? Here's why:
First of all, I will say that the movie is split into 6 seperate segments, Each one of them contains a different time, and main character.
1. Toshio: 6/10 - Boring yet creepy.
2. Yuki: 8/10 - Not as boring and very cool ending.
3. Mizuho: 7/10 - Kinda boring yet really exiting.
4. Kanna: 9/10 - Very scary and entertaining.
5. Kayoko: 10/10 - Involves the scene where Kayoko crawls down the stairs.
6. Kyoko: 5/10 - Very boring yet still creepy.
As you just read, some of these chapters were boring. If you watch it, give it a chance and it will scare you. Availible on eBAY.

Description
They were destined, if not doomed, to be together. She was the mill owner's battered bride; he was his overworked nephew. Out of their plight grew a profound and powerful secret love. Their hearts were free, but only murder could free the lovers from the tyranny of the mill owner. Or could it? Acclaimed throughout the world, this film almost didn't come to the screen at all. Chinese officials tried to hide Ju-Dou behind a wall of censorship - an act that prompted Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen and other major filmmakers to speak out in support of this remarkable film.

Colours.......2007-04-18
The best type of Chinese film. Sumptuous colours,Gong Li, and a love triangle. I cannot recommend this film more highly. Buy it, and enjoy the experience. There is not a bad thing to say about it!
A Beautiful, Bucolic Tragedy........2007-04-10
Director -and ex-cinematographer- Zhang Yimou infuses a simple tale of lust with beautiful visuals and a strong sense of foreboding. Hazy yellows, midnight blues and strong reds alternate to create an overwhelming sense of melancholy and desire in this tale of a servant (Li Baotian) who falls for his sadistic master's slave wife Ju Dou (Gong Li).
The film recalls silent cinema's use of tints while at the same time creating a languid editing cadence totally at odds with Hollywood technique, and succeeds in creating a bucolic tragedy which boils over with desire and death.
Ju Dou was banned in China on release, because it was seen as focusing on the persistence of feudalism in modern (post-1948) China. Although this issue is not immediately apparent to Western viewers, the film is seen as a key work of the Chinese Fifth Generation directors, and is a great example of an aesthetic in Chinese cinema which blends the personal with the political comment in a distinctively rural environment. Yimou's subsequent work has not really lived up to this and the other films he made in the 1980s, as he has veered onto big-budget works such as "House Of Flying Daggers", which unapologetically aim for international audiences.
Ju Dou: Razor D. E. lo-fi remix.......2006-09-16
Ju Dou is a great movie, I'd only previously seen it on VHS borrowed from the public library and was so looking forward to this release, but sadly I concure, this DVD is as bad as the other reviewers have previously stated. Worse than the old VHS recording I saw 7 years ago. So bad, that it's gotten someone like me, one who never writes reviews, to comment on it. This DVD should not be sold in the United States, or anywhere. Unfortunately, I picked this DVD up on a whim before reading any reviews.
I'd suggest you just cherish your memories of this wonderful film until a better transfer is made available. It was good to be reminded of the story, but very sad to see how carelessly Razor Digital Entertainment handled this transfer.
It really baffles me how terrible this transfer is. A few moments here and there the picture actually looks acceptable, but then the rest of the time it's blurry, washed out, monochromatic yellows and browns, lines and dust marks everywhere, and occasional digital glitches. This dvd has probably any bad transfer cliche you can imagine; more than I've seen anyway.
Yimou Zhang is a great director, Li Gong a wonderful actress, and it was from two beautiful films(seen only on VHS :( ) that I discovered this, Red Sorgum and Ju Dou. But heed the reviews, this DVD lo-fi remix of Ju Dou by Razor Digital Entertainment is a nightmare.
Amazon should not sell these titles.......2006-09-04
I believe the quality of this transfer (along with the one for Raise The Red Lantern) is so horrific that it completely ruines the beautiful experience of watching these Gong Li/ Zhang Yimou movies and should not even be offered for sale. Truly Bad
Different.......2006-07-31
I own a lot of Asian movies. They are different from western movies. I really enjoy them. I own most of Yimou's movies. He is an excellent director. The very enchanting Gong Li stars in a lot of them and is quite an excellent actress. A lot of his movies have a political statement. You will find an excellent story of a woman married to an impotent man. Has a child by another. She's abused by this old impotent man throughout. I won't ruin it,but I really enjoyed it. Buy Shanghai Triad,Temptress Moon,Chinese Box,Qiu Ju,Empress Dowager,Emperor and the Assasin,Zhou Yu's Train and Soul Haunted by painting. Gong Li is an excellent actress and called the best in China. I believe it.

HORRID sequel to a GREAT horror film!.......2006-06-25
I would give this movie a big fat ZERO if it was possible!! Also, the couple mentioned in the other reveiw DO NOT die and she wasn't PREGNANT with the "star"...pay more attention! This is REALLY a milk toast attempt to re-create the great creepiness of the first Juon. While the concept was really good, when all is said and done it falls WAY short of coming NEAR scary or creepy.......as usual, a few scenes may give a couple of chills, but it is far below what fans of Asian Horror have come to expect. If you are a fan of The Grude, as I am, you will probably want to see it...RENT it or buy it but DO NOT pay over 8-9 for it, it just isn't worth it!!
Scarier than the first.......2006-06-06
Ju-On 2 is a very great scary sequel with millions of thrills. I was lucky enough to find a bootleg DVD at West Edmonton Mall, (I live in Edmonton) so I bought it, and when I watched it, I immediately started jumping.
The movie starts off with a couple who die in a car crash, the woman pregnant with a star named Koyoko. She turns into a real big movie star, and stars in lots of horror movies. But when she is forced to shoot a documentary about the "haunted house", eveyone in production is missing. Now, she discovers she's next.
JOTG 2 is a very good sequel. Prepare to start screaming and jumping!
